Probably - since it all depends on who's measuring your net worth and which yardstick they're using. The WSJ looks at the various government cutoff levels for determining when people are considered 'rich':
It isn't as easy as you might think to determine who is rich. There are many different yardsticks devised by Uncle Sam, banks, brokerage firms and other institutions. The thresholds-as low as $44,000 for people receiving Social Security benefits-matter because they determine the taxes you owe, the college aid you receive, the investments you have access to and the fees you pay.Overall, the top 1% of U.S. households have a net worth above $6.8 million or at least $521,000 in income, according to data from the Federal Reserve and the Tax Policy Center in Washington. The cutoffs for the top 5% are $1.9 million in net worth, or $209,000 in income.
Needless to say, these national figures obscure large geographic differences. A prince of income in Danville, Va., is a relative pauper in New York City.
In Danville, the threshold for the top 1% of earners kicked in at $179,000, while it took $588,000 to reach the top 1% in New York City and northern New Jersey
But the American people decided in November that the 'rich' need to be punished pay their fair share.

A Great Stagnation in Action Movies
Is the great age of action movies over now?
Still, there has been major progress in action movies, at least if we are willing to accept a particular semantic switch. I much prefer Goldfinger to the newer Bond movies, but I also don't think of it as an action movie. It doesn't have much action, although I don't think people at the time felt that way. By my possibly distorted standards, the Bond movies start being action movies only with Diamonds are Forever.King Solomon's Mines is a very good movie, under-watched these days, as is Thief of Baghdad. Nonetheless prior to the 1970s I think of the action genre as virtually non-existent. I was stunned when I first (1981) saw the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark, though these days it isn't especially impressive, just well-executed.
One possibility is that each generation thinks it is the first to have had action movies.
To sum up, for all of the contemporary excess, we have been living in a Golden Age of Action Movies. Even a scorned movie such as Lara Croft is pretty awesome on the big screen. And Asian action movies have reached their peaks only in the last twenty years, including early John Woo. Call that the plus side of the globalization equation.
That said, a few impressive 3-D movies aside, the last five years have brought more negatives than positives, a'la "Transformers" and various overinflated, noisy, character-stuffed, and self-important Hollywood monstrosities. We'll get over it, but in reality stagnation is something we might have wished for instead.
There are a zillion "prepper" books each one with more elaborate schemes and crazier than the one before it. Underground bunkers are only the tip. Selling doomsday (vs wilderness) survivalist advice is big cottage industry. I refuse to pay for this nonsense. The Survival Library is an open online archive of self-sufficiency, self-reliance instructions, PDFs, and videos that appear on other sites for free. It is easy to weed through. Some of the information, like welding instruction, or raising rabbits, or how to start a fire with no matches is useful whether or not you believe that the UN is sending black helicopters to take away your machine gun in the basement. The free downloadable PDF of the 500-page LDS (Mormon) Prep Manual is particularly interesting and for most normal people, all the prep literature you'll ever need.

It's pretty bad, frankly. Especially compared to the first film, which is a sublime piece of un-PC action pie. Still, lots of shooty shooty, runny runny, punchy punchy, so still worth a gander off of Bittorrent (Fuck You, Hollywood).

Thanks. I can happily zone out to a dumb action movie, but not one that purports to be a worthy sequel to that amazingly well-done movie. I'll skip it.
I'm disappointed, though. I'd hoped Luc Besson, who did The Fifth Element and Taken, would have insisted on better. If only there were more out there with the integrity of the Coen Brothers. I don't like everything they do, but I have never for a moment doubted their integrity as filmmakers.

Where to start?
1. Yes, Goldfinger was an action movie as was Dr. No. If you're going around and fighting people while things blow up, it's an action movie. BTW, I'm pretty sure Sergio Leone's movies counted as action movies.
2. How is Raiders of the Lost Ark not impressive? What makes an action movie particularly good, one that you'll go back and watch again and again, is that it combines good writing with fighting people and blowing stuff up. Which brings me to point 3...
3. Die Hard was and remains the greatest action movie of all time. Forget stagnation over five years. Try 20. After a few years pass, a bunch of action movies blur together and you forget about them. It's not fair to judge stagnation by a period of a few years because if you look back, there's only a handful over any given period that you'd go back and consistently watch.

I think Die Hard was the perfect action movie. Pretty much every good action movie that followed cribbed from it.
This. Well, almost. You'd have to throw the first two Terminators into the mix. And you'd also have to admit that Die Hard, great as it was, had its ridiculous elements:

It's hard to find realistic villains in action movies with realistic
intentions. The mob just isn't scary anymore. Most now just use a greedy
developer or businessmen, as if a company would hire mercenaries to
hunt you down. Any good real life villains are not PC enough for the
movies. So the studios end up doing period pieces where villains are
already set or future/fantasy like the matrix where it doesn't matter if
you kill a whole bunch of people because it's all in a computer
anyways.
Taken solved this problem. So can any other movie, if they're willing to make actual murderous criminals the villains. They're not exactly hard to find. It's not as though the whole membership of Hamas, for example, has been exhausted.

I think they were good as movies, but not as action films. Die hard was nothing but an action film. And once the action starts, there is no breath, no let up on the action. The plot is simple: ordinary guy trying to survive.

Actually, it's a major problem with any kind of drama. Look at how movies and TV shows try to get around this so that the hero can be incommunicado at his lowest point.
You have to admire 24 for just embracing cell phones to the point that it glossed over the problem of cell reception in Los Angeles (also, traffic).

I haven't read that bit from Marginal Revolution about action movies but I think he's looking at things the wrong way judging from the excerpt posted.
It's not that action cinema is stagnant or anything, it's just that action cinema doesn't require a certain breed of actor. Gone are the days of Schwarzenegger and Stallone (even if those two are still personally popular, but you know what I mean) and here are the days where the action movie star can be much more of an everyday looking guy. More Ryan Goslings and fewer Jason Stathams. And if Wesley Snipes hadn't landed his dumb ass in jail for tax evasion...but I digress.
Further, because of the practicality and cheapness of CGI we get fewer practical FX. Fewer pretty 'splosions and more transparently digital fire and particle FX. Takes out the WOW factor. Plus CGI is prone to being abused. It's cheap, easy and any asshole can craft generic apocalyptic scenes of destruction. Before that you needed, ya know, imagination.
As an aside, this is where Michael Bay excels. He can do both very well. Transformers 2 might be bloated but he blows real shit up real good and that's why I still give that movie thumbs up. Robert Rodriguez, too, has a great sense for great action cinema. James Cameron, I think, lucked out a couple of times. And Avatar was a piece of shit no matter what angle you look at it.
Anywho...
As for Asian action...fuck it. Very little worth a shit. Fucking wire fu ruins everything it's in. Give me a few more years and I might come around but holy hell that shit is gay.
And I disagree that every generation thinks theirs is the first one with true action cinema, it's just that my (our) generation thinks action cinema was done right during our childhoods. But think, beyond the standard classics, how many can you remember and remember enjoying? There was A LOT of garbage in there and little of it is worth the effort revisiting.
I think the action genre is just in a period of rediscovery. No one knows what can make for a really good action film these days. Schwarzennegger and Stallone will keep making movies for that reliable old timey action film, Statham will be along for the ride but we'll also get a lot of stuff that's hit and (mostly) miss. The shitty video game adaptations, the cheapo generic CGI suckfests, the chop sockey wire-fu Asian garbage...eventually someone will come along with something smart and creative that balances all the best elements of the old action films with some truly creative stuff that will just WOW audiences again.

A bold and interesting casting proposal, for sure. And yet, if it had been Dennis Hopper in the room with Takagi, trying to get the password, there would have been no suspense about the "will he shoot him" question. Even if he had gotten the password, Hopper would have shot him.
Which brings up another weak point, Takagi going all "I can't give you that password, what, you're going to blackmail our executives..." Haven't worked for a company yet that put blackmail material on their servers.
I do love the movie, but I can't claim it is unrelentingly intelligent. What it is is a combination of great action and excellent wit and decent drama, and that combination is so rare that it deserves to be celebrated. Example: the way the semi-silly "fists with your toes" thing turned out to be the gateway to the protagonist's vulnerability to broken glass.

15 years ago, a financial planner that I was in the Lion's Club with asked me to go to Danville and Martinsville to meet with some of his clients about their real estate. Oh my god, these people were some of the widows of the men who owned all the mills down there, and those houses they lived in would make a Kennedy blush. It was impossible to come up with prices for some of these homes because there was nothing else like them. I finally had to start trying to price them based on what the property was worth, plus what the homes would be worth once you stripped out the interior fountains, drapes, statues, and anything else. One of the houses sold for 300K, and the new owners were able to sell all that stuff for 200K. They bought a freaking mansion for 100K.

Secondly, New Hampster was probably the wrong place. That's easy to say with hindsight, but I argued against it as it was happening. I don't even remember all the choices, but there were better ones. Nevada is actually more purple than you think, and so is Oregon. Nevada's population is not that high. Anyway, it appears to have failed.
Thirdly, gigantic opportunity missed there as the TEA Party was winding up, but then, we wouldn't be where we are anyway if we weren't so prone to factionalizing and infighting... so there you are.

Yeah, you could tell what they wanted to do but they set that up well. Why? Because that vulnerability is exploited much later in the movie. In fact, it looks like an asset for a while. He seems more mobile.
Who can forget the zig-zag table? Or putting the villain on a chain and hook and throwing him across the ceiling? (Why would an office building have such a thing?)
My absolute favorite is the double close-up on the Christmas tape.

For all the moral and decent people that claim to be Libertarian, and want freedom, liberty, limited government and free markets, and are willing to take full responsibility for theiractions, there are a bunch more who want license to do anything they damn well please, do drugs out the ying-yang and just be libertines.
Many Libertarians claim Ayn Rand as one of their inspirations, but before she died, she totally denounced the whole Libertarian movement as immoral, because they refused to set personal limits on themselves and adhere to any moral code, such as her philosophy of Objectivism, which expected a certain amount of self-limiting restraint and responsibility.
I'm not against the Libertarians, per se, but the movement, such as it is, is riddled with a lot of foolish people. So that's what sets it apart from the Republicans and Democrats. Ha ha haha ha ha ha...........

In the age of HDTV, why in the hell do all those tv and movie studios make all of their shows so freaking dark? The brown rice may be good for another few months. The back up electrical devices I bought are now next to worthless. Even the solar panels last but a few years.

Sure, I think drugs ought to be legalized. It's not a driving force in my life, or even how I vote, and my drugs of choice are all currently legal in all 50 states. I just think that locking up/discarding a large chunk of our population is a much greater harm than the cure (the War on Drugs).

But now that the fiscal chickens are coming home to roost, they're shamelessly indulging in fraud. They're bringing in out of state/country students, who pay the full fare and are able, and giving away places to politically favored types to pursue whatever they pursue in the intellectual sandboxes they call departments. The hope is that the ability of the former will mask the stupidity and incompetence of the latter, so that for a while "Berkeley graduate" won't be a term people say with derision; at least until people figure this out.

Frankly, I don't really know, because I try to avoid things that piss me off. I would expect the hard sciences to be theAlamo of the place, just because they're rooted in reality. But in fairness even many faculty in the hard sciences are pretty lefty, one reason that I ultimately left academia.

As far as most universities go, and as much as it pains me, I say Rubble. Not a one of them is worth the money poured into them. They chose sides and have become the enemy to me.
As a former faculty member, I feel the same way. The universities are part of the problem, because they're Red infested. Online education may be part of the solution.

I do that, and also make the argument for the other side, and honestly try to make the best argument for the other side that I can, and point out where and why I think it is deficient. I also preface my remarks by saying that they'll have to make up their own minds. I not only believe that, but think that it's important to acknowledge explicitly. I don't want them, as part of adolescent rebellion, to apply an inversion operator to everything I believe, but rather to think their own way through things.

Makes perfect sense to me and that's a hard one. I have two sons. Completely different personality wise. One is a rebellious little pain in the ass (like me), who has grown to be quite independent minded, I'll make my mind up for myself type. No way, the BS from school is going to sway him. MAJOR arguments with me, which after I cool down I think is pretty cool. The other one tells me what I want to hear, and I can never be sure of where he's coming from. Same house, same exposure. It comes down to more than what you personally do. I think the best you can do is use your judgement and go with your gut as it happens. The rest isn't in your hands.

The best thing is to expose kids to lots of different viewpoints and then get them to talk about it...not so much listen to the adults' opinions but sort of think out loud while you or other adults ask solid-but-not-confrontational questions with good follow-up. "Why do you think XYZ Corp puts chemicals in the water? What would they gain from that? Why would they want to poison people who they depend on to buy their products?" You're basically helping him get to the right conclusion on his own, that way, and it sticks better.

Dave, here's my reasoning. Any value system that's imposed can be rejected without thought because it wasn't thought through in the first place. People who have any spirit tend to resent having anything imposed on them, so even if the kids would otherwise have reached the same conclusions, my having forced them on them will make those conclusions anathema to them(at least until they're > 30 or so), because such imposition essentially denies one's personhood.
For these reasons, I'd much rather that they draw their own conclusions. This also serves as a check on my reasoning; maybe I'm wrong. If you think so, tell me why, with substantiation. I doubt that I'm wrong, but always try to make room for the possibility.
Partly as a function of this approach, and partly because they've inherited my intrinsic gnarliness, my kids are pretty much proof against anyone telling them what to think. So I don't worry too much about commie teachers turning their heads. They've had several try, and they come home laughing about it.

I'm not imposing values, but rather leading them to them. I want the values to be the kids', to be sourced from within them, and not just regurgitated versions of what I believe.
They're great kids, and this approach has (so far) worked well. Our older son is more conservative than I am, and I'm to the right of Genghis Khan.

Yeah, and then I discovered that micro-spotlights (40W, about 2" across) have become ridiculously expensive in incandescent (like $6 each), and were marginally less ridiculous ($7) in halogen.
Every single time I shop light bulbs, it's like having my head applied to a microplane grater -- and I wish for Fred Upton to DIAF.....and another drop of poison falls into otherwise happy thoughts of Kate Upton.

For example, I had thought of a plot where our nilihistic young adults (of whatever age) of Hollywood, in their Progressive Puritanical Hitler Youth zeal combined with their hipster trendiness, would be tracking people via Internet monitoring and would so be offended at by a private citizen making anonymous comments that they considered not really outre but really a threat to their preferred political party (because they found out he was working on a business plan that would give him public appeal) that they left little coded comments here and there in movies, commercials, etc. so that if this "enemy of the state" ever popped up--even if he kept quiet on things political--they could expose him, saying "no buddy, we knew you all along, and are going to make sure you pay for disagreeing with us, and we know all your private secrets, so we will make sure the public never likes you."
I don't know if I would be able to get the audience to suspend disbelief, though, to make the premise work. But It would be the new "Crucible" for the Technology age.
