The WSJ looks at the various government cutoff levels for determining when people are considered 'rich': It isn't as easy as you might think to determine who is rich. There are many different yardsticks devised by Uncle Sam, banks, brokerage firms and other institutions. The thresholds-as low as $44,000 for people receiving Social Security benefits-matter because they determine the taxes you owe, the college aid you receive, the investments you have access to and the fees you pay. But the American people decided in November that the 'rich' need to Welcome to Your New 2013 Paycheck You 'Rich' Americans

New Hampshire Legislator: We Need to 'Restrict Freedoms' of Conservatives Here's what NH 3rd District State Representative Democrat Cynthia Chase wrote on a blog: "In the opinion of this Democrat, Free Staters are the single biggest threat the state is facing today. There is, legally, nothing we can do to prevent them from moving here to take over the state, which is their openly stated goal. In this country you can move anywhere you choose and they have that same right. What we can do is to make the environment here so unwelcoming that some will choose not to come, and some may actually leave. One way is to pass measures that will restrict the 'freedoms' that they think they will find here. Another is to shine the bright light of publicity on who they are and why they are coming." Yes let's shine the light on those who would restrict people's freedom for having the wrong political beliefs. Here is the face of tyranny: A Great Stagnation in Action Movies Is the great age of action movies over now? Still, there has been major progress in action movies, at least if we are willing to accept a particular semantic switch. I much prefer Goldfinger to the newer Bond movies, but I also don't think of it as an action movie. It doesn't have much action, although I don't think people at the time felt that way. Some of the information, like welding instruction, or raising rabbits, or how to start a fire with no matches is useful whether or not you believe that the UN is sending black helicopters to take away your machine gun in the basement. Vermont used to consist of conservative-leaning dairy farmers. Then it was inundated with leftist Massachusetts types who thought it was a theme part with rolling hills. National Debt Meets Temporal Mechanics
Nevada state Treasurer has already beclowned herself after insisting that the elimination of the National Debt in 1835 caused the British to be successful in the War of 1812, with the problem thereafter being solved by a man killed in 1804. While her logic appeared to be based on an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, it turns out that that claim was inaccurate. I can happily zone out to a dumb action movie, but not one that purports to be a worthy sequel to that amazingly well-done movie. I'll skip it. I'm disappointed, though. By my possibly distorted standards, the Bond movies start being action movies only with Diamonds are Forever.
King Solomon's Mines is a very good movie, under-watched these days, as is Thief of Baghdad. Nonetheless prior to the 1970s I think of the action genre as virtually non-existent. I was stunned when I first (1981) saw the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark, though these days it isn't especially impressive, just well-executed. Where to start? 1. Yes, Goldfinger was an action movie as was Dr. No. If you're going around and fighting people while things blow up, it's an action movie. BTW, I'm pretty sure Sergio Leone's movies counted as action movies. 2. How is Raiders of the Lost Ark not impressive? What makes an action movie particularly good, one that you'll go back and watch again and again, is that it combines good writing with fighting people and blowing stuff up. Which brings me to point 3... 3. Die Hard was and remains the greatest action movie of all time. Forget stagnation over five years. Try 20. After a few years pass, a bunch of action movies blur together and you forget about them. It's not fair to judge stagnation by a period of a few years because if you look back, there's only a handful over any given period that you'd go back and consistently watch. I think Die Hard was the perfect action movie. Pretty much every good action movie that followed cribbed from it. This. Well, almost. You'd have to throw the first two Terminators into the mix. And you'd also have to admit that Die Hard, great as it was, had its ridiculous elements: Painful dialog: Cop who likes Twinkies: "Bag it" Clerk: "Big Time" Painfully Obvious Plot Elements: (same) Cop who Cannot Draw Because Of Trauma is confronted with the archetype of all murderous villians, covered in blood, issuing a massive testosterone roar, holding automatic weapon: Lo! He draws his weapon and shoots the world's most obvious monster! It is a psychological miracle! And yet, it was great. But in those late-night moments, you have to ask yourself, would it have been so esteemed, if Alan Rickman had been somehow unavailable? Posted by: Splunge at January 06, 2013 10:29 PM (2IW5Q) 109

It's hard to find realistic villains in action movies with realistic intentions. The mob just isn't scary anymore. Most now just use a greedy developer or businessmen, as if a company would hire mercenaries to hunt you down. Any good real life villains are not PC enough for the movies. So the studios end up doing period pieces where villains are already set or future/fantasy like the matrix where it doesn't matter if you kill a whole bunch of people because it's all in a computer anyways.

I think they were good as movies, but not as action films. Die hard was nothing but an action film. And once the action starts, there is no breath, no let up on the action. The plot is simple: ordinary guy trying to survive. And you'd also have to admit that Die Hard, great as it was, had its ridiculous elements: It ain't Shakespeare, but the Chekhov's guns are put in place and then fired. (same) Cop who Cannot Draw Because Of Trauma is confronted with the archetype of all murderous villians, covered in blood, issuing a massive testosterone roar, holding automatic weapon: Lo! He draws his weapon and shoots the world's most obvious monster! It is a psychological miracle! Well, I think the key was that he did it, while everybody else had froze. But Ace pointed out this story arc for Reginald VelJohnson, it's a little silly, but they wanted that false finale. And yet, it was great. But in those late-night moments, you have to ask yourself, would it have been so esteemed, if Alan Rickman had been somehow unavailable? I think so, actually. Rickman is brilliant at that attitude that he's the smartest person in the world and he's just tired of all you idiots, but the only part of his performance that I think couldn't have been achieved by a number of other actors (imagine Dennis Hopper) was his delivery of "I am an exceptional thief!" plus every action movie has to have one scene where Good Guy looks up something on the internet
Posted by: Jones in CO at January 06, 2013 10:49 PM (8sCoq) 168
Good evening.
I haven't read that bit from Marginal Revolution about action movies but I think he's looking at things the wrong way judging from the excerpt posted. It's not that action cinema is stagnant or anything, it's just that action cinema doesn't require a certain breed of actor. Gone are the days of Schwarzenegger and Stallone (even if those two are still personally popular, but you know what I mean) and here are the days where the action movie star can be much more of an everyday looking guy. More Ryan Goslings and fewer Jason Stathams. And if Wesley Snipes hadn't landed his dumb ass in jail for tax evasion...but I digress. Further, because of the practicality and cheapness of CGI we get fewer practical FX. Fewer pretty 'splosions and more transparently digital fire and particle FX. Takes out the WOW factor. Plus CGI is prone to being abused. It's cheap, easy and any asshole can craft generic apocalyptic scenes of destruction. Before that you needed, ya know, imagination. As an aside, this is where Michael Bay excels. He can do both very well. Transformers 2 might be bloated but he blows real shit up real good and that's why I still give that movie thumbs up. Robert Rodriguez, too, has a great sense for great action cinema. James Cameron, I think, lucked out a couple of times. And Avatar was a piece of shit no matter what angle you look at it. Anywho... As for Asian action...fuck it. Very little worth a shit. Fucking wire fu ruins everything it's in. Give me a few more years and I might come around but holy hell that shit is gay. And I disagree that every generation thinks theirs is the first one with true action cinema, it's just that my (our) generation thinks action cinema was done right during our childhoods. But think, beyond the standard classics, how many can you remember and remember enjoying? There was A LOT of garbage in there and little of it is worth the effort revisiting. I think the action genre is just in a period of rediscovery. No one knows what can make for a really good action film these days. Schwarzennegger and Stallone will keep making movies for that reliable old timey action film, Statham will be along for the ride but we'll also get a lot of stuff that's hit and (mostly) miss. The shitty video game adaptations, the cheapo generic CGI suckfests, the chop sockey wire-fu Asian garbage...eventually someone will come along with something smart and creative that balances all the best elements of the old action films with some truly creative stuff that will just WOW audiences again. I think so, actually. Rickman is brilliant at that attitude that he's the smartest person in the world and he's just tired of all you idiots, but the only part of his performance that I think couldn't have been achieved by a number of other actors (imagine Dennis Hopper) was his delivery of "I am an exceptional thief!" A bold and interesting casting proposal, for sure. And yet, if it had been Dennis Hopper in the room with Takagi, trying to get the password, there would have been no suspense about the "will he shoot him" question. Even if he had gotten the password, Hopper would have shot him. Which brings up another weak point, Takagi going all "I can't give you that password, what, you're going to blackmail our executives..." Haven't worked for a company yet that put blackmail material on their servers. I do love the movie, but I can't claim it is unrelentingly intelligent. What it is is a combination of great action and excellent wit and decent drama, and that combination is so rare that it deserves to be celebrated. Example: the way the semi-silly "fists with your toes" thing turned out to be the gateway to the protagonist's vulnerability to broken glass. Well, let's take a quick moronic survey, of how many Free Stater libertarians you think are just easy-druggies and/or LuapNor devotees. I know the movement started out looking for true patriots, sturdy shopkeepers, entrepreneurs and so on.
Now, after the rise and fall of Liberal-tarianism, and the may I say somewhat non-libertarian brand of conservatism that jerked a noble knee against it, wouldn't an awful lot of people here get generally pissed if they thought an onslaught of libertarians was in the offing? A lot of them have long hair and beards, you know. Arts degrees. The younger ones put these rings in their ears. And they make insufferable sommeliers. Posted by: AmishDude at January 06, 2013 10:49 PM (xSegX) One of their core beliefs is that *we* are Bond Villains, and it is a "preemptive" belief in the sense that it precedes and cannot be contradicted by evidence. That's how someone can openly say "we need to restrict freedom to keep people who want freedom out of our power playground" or any of the million other insane things they say and *not* see themselves as anything but *absolutely justified*. It is a species of mental illness that could be called some kind of combination of Denial and Projection and Paranoia and Dunning-Kruger. And that's an incomplete description. And "our side" is so worried about being impolite or being seen as reprobates or primitive that we infight constantly. Pretty much I only observe any news anymore out of ingrained habit, it's all Mad, Mad, Mad. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 06, 2013 11:04 PM (bxiXv) 216

"Needless to say, these national figures obscure large geographic differences. A prince of income in Danville, Va., is a relative pauper in New York City. In Danville, the threshold for the top 1% of earners kicked in at $179,000, while it took $588,000 to reach the top 1% in New York City and northern New Jersey" 15 years ago, a financial planner that I was in the Lion's Club with asked me to go to Danville and Martinsville to meet with some of his clients about their real estate. Oh my god, these people were some of the widows of the men who owned all the mills down there, and those houses they lived in would make a Kennedy blush. It was impossible to come up with prices for some of these homes because there was nothing else like them. I finally had to start trying to price them based on what the property was worth, plus what the homes would be worth once you stripped out the interior fountains, drapes, statues, and anything else. One of the houses sold for 300K, and the new owners were able to sell all that stuff for 200K. They bought a freaking mansion for 100K. Posted by: MrCaniac, at January 06, 2013 11:08 PM (Zd/NW) 229

WRT Free Staters, firstly it's asking a lot of people who want to live free to move to a state run a way they don't like. Conservatives evidently like challenges unless they're political - see the "Red Flight" from places like California, once red states, now increasingly blue as more and more people leave.
Yes, it sucks to have to fight. On the other hand, I *thought* that surrendering sucked too, maybe not so much. Secondly, New Hampster was probably the wrong place. That's easy to say with hindsight, but I argued against it as it was happening. I don't even remember all the choices, but there were better ones. Nevada is actually more purple than you think, and so is Oregon. Nevada's population is not that high. Anyway, it appears to have failed. Thirdly, gigantic opportunity missed there as the TEA Party was winding up, but then, we wouldn't be where we are anyway if we weren't so prone to factionalizing and infighting... so there you are. Example: the way the semi-silly "fists with your toes" thing turned out to be the gateway to the protagonist's vulnerability to broken glass.
Yeah, you could tell what they wanted to do but they set that up well. Why? Because that vulnerability is exploited much later in the movie. In fact, it looks like an asset for a while. He seems more mobile. Who can forget the zig-zag table? Or putting the villain on a chain and hook and throwing him across the ceiling? (Why would an office building have such a thing?) It was a case of "He's doing what, now?" "There's a virus, or something?""What are the pills for, again?" "Why are they doing that?" You'd get some half exposition, then off on a chase thing. Who no, Gnu Breed, as a matter of fact there are some kinds we can bloody well do without. I was a county chairman for the LP in 1973. Harry Browne ("How You Can Profit from The Coming Cholera Epidemic") pretty much did it for me, but I was open to the many-sided tent until the invention of the Liberaltarian during the first Obama campaign. Of course those weren't libertarians at all -- but a lot of people here thought they might as well have been, just saying.
There is now a lot of L-hate among conservatives. Great strategy play by the progressives, but also a product of Paulite foreign policy (or, you might say, the lack of it). I honestly don't think most people right now who think of themselves as conservatives would countenance a libertarian majority in their state government. Those who would already identify as L's. Conservatives are losing people's hearts and minds due to picking the wrong fights. The obsession over abortion and other social issues turns people off. Once they are turned off, they don't listen to another stances. People like Akins, Bachman and Santorum have become the face of Conservatism.

Libertarianism is what Pre-Falwell/Bush Conservatism was about. It's about individualism and Freedom. Posted by: Reality Check at January 06, 2013 11:23 PM (42ieH) Within that context, I consider myself libertarian but, right or wrong, lots of people use the term to mean something else. I would also be ok with calling myself a liberal in the classical sense but the left has so distorted the term as to invert its meaning. I am currently using the handle 'rational anarchist' as defined in the seminal libertarian novel, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by the Dean of Science Fiction, Robert A. Heinlein. The problem I have with the big L's is the hubris. They're like the proggers, just from a different perspective. They want, desperately, to believe that there are rules that can be intuited that will make society run like a well oiled machine. I think this flatters them self image as brilliant thinkers, though some are, in fact, brilliant thinkers, most are not.
I'm of the good enough is good enough school of thought. The polity has the right to make bad decisions. Banning booze or whatever. That's what self government is all about. If you don't like the way things are, move, or become more persuasive. The most important thing we could do would be to limit, not the size of government per se, but to limit it's geography. In a word, bring back real federalism, regionalism and localism. Well, I guess that's three words but you know what I mean. Posted by: toby928© for TB at January 06, 2013 11:31 PM (QupBk) 307
While I personally consider myself very libertarian -- minimal government, maximal personal freedom -- I have to say that actual self-identified Libertarians make me tired.
It always, ALWAYS comes down to weed with them. Whether they have long hair or crewcuts, whether they have personal arsenals or don't like guns, gold bugs or Bitcoin crackpots, it always comes back to weed in the end. There is more to life than weed. I'm sick of "libertarians" who will happily abandon all the freedoms that really matter -- the freedoms to say, think, work, and spend your money as you choose -- in exchange for the "freedom" to stay stoned. Aldous Huxley fucking nailed it. Posted by: Trimegistus at January 06, 2013 11:31 PM (7tSG7) 308

I usta read Reason Magazine in the 90's, and thought real hard about declaring as a Libertarian, but finally Reason persuaded me that I was not a Libertarian. For all the moral and decent people that claim to be Libertarian, and want freedom, liberty, limited government and free markets, and are willing to take full responsibility for theiractions, there are a bunch more who want license to do anything they damn well please, do drugs out the ying-yang and just be libertines. Many Libertarians claim Ayn Rand as one of their inspirations, but before she died, she totally denounced the whole Libertarian movement as immoral, because they refused to set personal limits on themselves and adhere to any moral code, such as her philosophy of Objectivism, which expected a certain amount of self-limiting restraint and responsibility. I'm not against the Libertarians, per se, but the movement, such as it is, is riddled with a lot of foolish people. So that's what sets it apart from the Republicans and Democrats. I like the Prepper threads but at my somewhat advanced years I have come to embrace the fact that you cannot prep for every single contingency. You can only prep for about 25% of the worst outcome at any given time. For one thing, every time you get on an airplane you are about as unprepped as the day you were born, and as well when you get off and thereafter at your destination.
But, I do what I can around the house. I bought a bunch of food for the end of the world about 5 years ago. I am now eating most of it. Some of it I will donate to the local food bank. The brown rice may be good for another few months. The back up electrical devices I bought are now next to worthless. Even the solar panels last but a few years. And in spite of all of this I don't blame the Mayans. Posted by: navybrat at January 06, 2013 11:37 PM (BzGtc) 324

On another note, one thing I hate about the visuals of hepcat video films like the Bournes is that little fast-forward shuffle they do, that doesn't exactly indicate the passage of time so much as compress the few seconds formerly occupied by the main themes of a soundtrack score. Want to get Jason from one end of the shopping centre to the other? Just speed up the tape. It was cute exactly once. Supposed to be druglike? Psychological? Time-relative? Kid stuff. Bet you a semester at LA Film these little pricks never had to read about the Unities.
And the sound. I played in a rock band, worked in a glass plant, but damnitall I can still carry on a conversation in a crowded room. Dark moderne fillums are scored for sub-woofed 7.1 systems, and have to be played at high volume. Fine for the gunfights and ka-booms, but they mix down the dialogue if you watch on a TV or monitor screen with mere stereo. The enunciation is poor, since everyone is personifying an I-don't-care mumbling antihero, and the microphone technique ("aural spacing") is indifferent. Effectively, all one-on-one speech is muffled. This is funny because grownups can't hear it. Like ghetto slang in junior high. Posted by: comatus at January 06, 2013 11:40 PM (qaVK+) 336

There is now a lot of L-hate among conservatives. Great strategy play by the progressives, but also a product of Paulite foreign policy (or, you might say, the lack of it). Reality Check @ 323 Why are you here engaging in this pointless rhetoric if you believe in "live and let live"? You are either here as a troll for shits and grins or your are trying to persuade people to live life "your way". Where did I say I wanted people to live life "my way"? I only emphasized that the failure of the Libertarian party was the reliance of it's people to live within personal restraint, because what they want is almost total personal liberty. With that comes either greater personal responsibility or total anarchy. When the great muddle of people are confronted with anarchy, they will cry for ORDER, which means a kind of fascism, which I am not down with at all. So either we have some kind of ordered populace because they choose to be ordered on their own responsibilities as citizens (which was the old America before the Civil War), or we have what we have now, which is an encroachinggrade of statism that is grinding down personal responsibility and personal initiative and replacing it with more government free cheese and pablum. Freedom is as much a state of mind as a state of being. Lock me in a prison, but my mind is still my own, and I can still think the thoughts of a free man. Crush a man's spirit and rob him of his self-worth, and he no longer thinks of himself as free. Posted by: Reader C.J. Burch writes...... at January 06, 2013 11:46 PM (Md8Uo) 358

Reality Check is the exact reason I used a small 'l' for my libertarianism. What an ass. Grumpy the Younger has it right, Heinlein came to the right conclusions about the role of government and self control. He didn't start out there.
Sure, I think drugs ought to be legalized. It's not a driving force in my life, or even how I vote, and my drugs of choice are all currently legal in all 50 states. I just think that locking up/discarding a large chunk of our population is a much greater harm than the cure (the War on Drugs). As someone else above mentioned, a lot of conservatives have libertarian leanings but the brand is damaged worse than conservatism itself. Posted by: GnuBreed at January 06, 2013 11:51 PM (ccXZP) 375

But Evans had all of those tiny rooms in the basement that clubs held meetings in. Ah, but that proves my point. The Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade at our alma mater could only hold meetings in the lecture theater in Latimer Hall. Anything else would be much too small. That graph of tax increase is a bit misleading. Yes the payroll tax went up; BACK TO IT'S ORIGINAL AMOUNT.
It was a vote buying scam to begin with and they said it was temporary to begin with. So let's not resort to word play to report what's happening like the Democrats do. It was geared to do this very thing. Democrats (Obama) knew they would revert this tax to it's previous levels and that when they did so, they would be able to point the finger at Republicans for it's "increase". Of course anyone who's got a brain didn't fall for it the first time but let's not aid their distortion. Posted by: Bitter Clinger (aka 3 tooth) at January 07, 2013 12:28 AM (3E2th) 495

That said, I do oppose the Neocons because they support the Muslim Brotherhood's agenda. That's why they supported Obama's illegal war in Libya and are calling for us to get involved in Syria. They silence people who point this out by calling them anti-Semites.

Berkeley has gotten seedier, if that is possible. The Ave, seedier? I thought it was in the ground state of seediness back in the day. Now? I have no interest. Me either. Zero. Zip. A great university, perhaps the greatest in our history, driven into the gutter by political correctness and the statist aspirations of a series of awful governors, presidents and chancellors. In fairness, it would be tough to change the course of the university, which has been leftist-infested from back when. But now that the fiscal chickens are coming home to roost, they're shamelessly indulging in fraud. They're bringing in out of state/country students, who pay the full fare and are able, and giving away places to politically favored types to pursue whatever they pursue in the intellectual sandboxes they call departments. The hope is that the ability of the former will mask the stupidity and incompetence of the latter, so that for a while "Berkeley graduate" won't be a term people say with derision; at least until people figure this out. And that's really not a description far off from what actually happened, and almost everybody just sits back and takes it. Drives me freaking bonkers. I was such a troublemaker in school because I knew it was horseshit, my parents had me away from it when they could, but couldn't afford it most of the time. They at least told me how much of it was crap (most). Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 07, 2013 01:07 AM (bxiXv) 622

Immature intellects gravitate to two types of philosophy. One is tell me what to do so I don't have to undergo the hard work to decide for myself (the Obama/self esteem school) and the other is I want absolute freedom to continue to not have consequences for my thoughts and actions (the nouveau Paulite/Reddit brigade). The LP in particular is overrun with the second group now. Legalize it, same sex marriage, abortion on demand. The new breed of libertarian is almost an anathema to traditional ideas of economic liberty and individual freedom. They have no qualms about granting the state more power in order to grant "new" freedoms like gay marriage or marijuana legalization. The state cannot grant liberty just as it cannot grant private property but to the new hipster breed of libertarian it's about looking liberty minded regardless of state control. Traditional libertarianism and conservatism is focused on the individual and individual morality choices for the benefit to society and how the state can only detract from those and not add to them.

-------- The best thing is to expose kids to lots of different viewpoints and then get them to talk about it...not so much listen to the adults' opinions but sort of think out loud while you or other adults ask solid-but-not-confrontational questions with good follow-up. "Why do you think XYZ Corp puts chemicals in the water? What would they gain from that? Why would they want to poison people who they depend on to buy their products?" The vast majorioty of teachers don't share your reluctance, I assure youPosted by: DAve at January 07, 2013 01:21 AM (XDC0v) Dave, here's my reasoning. Any value system that's imposed can be rejected without thought because it wasn't thought through in the first place. People who have any spirit tend to resent having anything imposed on them, so even if the kids would otherwise have reached the same conclusions, my having forced them on them will make those conclusions anathema to them(at least until they're > 30 or so), because such imposition essentially denies one's personhood. For these reasons, I'd much rather that they draw their own conclusions. This also serves as a check on my reasoning; maybe I'm wrong. If you think so, tell me why, with substantiation. I doubt that I'm wrong, but always try to make room for the possibility. Partly as a function of this approach, and partly because they've inherited my intrinsic gnarliness, my kids are pretty much proof against anyone telling them what to think. So I don't worry too much about commie teachers turning their heads. They've had several try, and they come home laughing about it. Posted by: Jay Guevara at January 07, 2013 01:32 AM (DXlwL) 656

655 Yeah, but if you believe that it's impossible that you believe that beliefs even CAN be forced on children. I tend to doubt that hardly anything we believe is something we're really reasoned into. You can't expect the young and naive to come to the same conclusions that age and experience have brought us to when presented with the same information or data.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 07, 2013 01:26 AM (bxiXv) That's exactly what I do, or at least try to. I'm a scientist, and teach scientific method. After all,CO2 is CO2, right?Whereas if they were commies merely trying to hobble the American economy, they wouldn't care about Chinese CO2, but only American CO2, right? GnuBreed it is funny to read some of those comments at Slate though.
they think they are so totally smart and superior human beings, when they consistently and reliably fall into the same traps associated with the dynamics of any group, *and they are unable to even recognize it*. they live in an information bubble, but they don't know they live in an information bubble, even while they berate conservatives for living in their information bubble. it is quite amusing to watch. I'mglad that every one is talking parenting, for I have to admit I have had my concerns about America. In fact, might turn them into a sci-fi book.
For example, I had thought of a plot where our nilihistic young adults (of whatever age) of Hollywood, in their Progressive Puritanical Hitler Youth zeal combined with their hipster trendiness, would be tracking people via Internet monitoring and would so be offended at by a private citizen making anonymous comments that they considered not really outre but really a threat to their preferred political party (because they found out he was working on a business plan that would give him public appeal) that they left little coded comments here and there in movies, commercials, etc. so that if this "enemy of the state" ever popped up--even if he kept quiet on things political--they could expose him, saying "no buddy, we knew you all along, and are going to make sure you pay for disagreeing with us, and we know all your private secrets, so we will make sure the public never likes you." I don't know if I would be able to get the audience to suspend disbelief, though, to make the premise work. But It would be the new "Crucible" for the Technology age. chemjeff, I don't think that Slate itself is a totally lost cause; they do occasionally have some writers that put some effort into their thoughts. It's a bit left leaning but not a Kos echo chamber for talking points.
I do like to look through the first 20 or so comments on articles I read as that gives a better idea of what their readership is like. And that is how I spotted your nic there. You were supporting a right leaning comment. Posted by: GnuBreed at January 07, 2013 02:05 AM (ccXZP) 719

The fact he was met after the plane landed would've meant the flight crew would've called it in and asked for him to be met at the plane. Unless the captain happened to be a card carrying member of Obama's army, knew it was Rand Paul's son, and that Rand announced a possible candidacy.....I'll go with the much more likely possibility ofa dumb kid being a dumb kid.
