Overnight Open Thread (5 Jan 2013)

What's this? Beyond Discouraged, 3 Million Workers Hopelessly Unemployed. Where the hell was this coverage from CNN before the election? While it is nice they are finally talking about the long term unemployed out there, they still cling to their narrative that the economy is improving.

The unemployment rate has dropped sharply since 2009, and the number of people unemployed for six months or more has declined. Plus, the number of so-called "discouraged workers" has also fallen.

Yeah, sure. Keep telling yourself that. Ironic that the largest groups that are unemployed are some of Obama's biggest supporters (blacks, hispanics and young adults). And it just so happens that Hilda Solis Thinks That Paying People Not To Work Has Saved Millions Of Jobs. Genius.

Enjoying that lighter first pay check yet this year? Well, get ready For Rising Gas Prices. It is expected to go up 35 cents by April and peak at around $3.95 a gallon for the year.

Eyeball Liberty Alert

Uh-oh. One-piece Swimsuits Poised For A Takeover. Damn.

A Good Day To Die Hard

I think I'm going to see this. It probably is a far cry from the original movie but looks to fit the bill for just a good action flick.

Booze

Hmmm. Some of these I didn't know like the Maple Sap Vodka. Ten Crazy Things People Use To Make Booze.

The same tree goo that makes syrup can make spirits. First, tap some holes into the right maple tree at the right time in spring. As the temperatures fluctuate between night and day, a sugary sap oozes out from the trees. Where there's sugar, there's some human trying to make booze out of it. The Vermont Spirits distillery's Vermont Gold Vodka is a fine example. It's made from 100 percent maple sap, which is then fermented and triple-distilled. The result was lightly sweet, quite smooth, and made me think of pancakes. I could have polished off a case of it.

I gotta try a double shot of this mixed with bacon vodka.

In other booze news, Gamma Radiation Turns Cheap Booze Into Good Stuff Within Minutes.

In a technique we have little doubt was discovered after drinking a lot of cut-rate cachaca, scientists at the Nuclear Energy Center at the University of Sao Paolo have discovered that blasting the cheap stuff with gamma radiation for a few minutes is the equivalent of aging it in barrels. And no, it’s not dangerous:

“Tests have shown this cachaca can be consumed right after it is irradiated,” Valter Artur [the genius who discovered this] was quoted as saying in Monday’s edition of the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo.

So how does this alcoholic miracle happen? Through the magic of chemistry. The gamma rays speed up the chemical reactions the liquor would normally go through over time by ionizing it.

Sniping

Wow. Can You Realistically Hit A Target At 3080 Yards? That was some damn fine shooting. Video at the link.

Recent news has been reported of two Australian Snipers who shot and killed a Taliban commander at a record distance of 3079 yards during a simultaneous command fire. They were firing two Barrett M107 .50 BMG rifles. There has been a lot of debate whether the equipment used had the accuracy or sighting capability to make such a shot even possible. Australia has some very capable snipers and we aren’t here to be a part of that debate, we just got overly excited about the news because we wanted to see what kind of accuracy was really possible at 3079 yards so we headed out to the Utah desert with our DTA HTI .375CT rifle and DTM ammo in hand to see what we could do.

2 A Most Murderous Monopoly

The failure of gun control measures to stop criminals in the U.K. is well noted. British doctors, no longer being able to blame the legality of guns for the high violent crime rates in the U.K., are trying to make long kitchen knives illegal. With knives already highly regulated, yet violent crimes involving knives are rising. Perhaps, many British doctors who work in the U.K.’s National Health Service (NHS) don’t actually care whether or not banning long kitchen knives will do anything in regards to violent crime rates. Maybe, just maybe, these doctors are jealous that they don’t have a monopoly on killing people?

Me and Mrs. Mahon have been watching the Dick van Dyke Show on the netflix for a while now, and we are loving it. I am looking forward to the Never Bathe on Saturday episode. One of my favorites was the one where Laura revealed that Alan Brady wore a rug.
I had a huge crush on Laura Petrie when I was a kid watching the show on cable. That crush has reawakened.

Some will hold out as long ad they can but with the accompanying culture change in no time at all the freedom to possess firearms, to hunt and to control ones destiny will also disappear. I wish I was making this up but it's going to be handed to them by John fucking McCain. They are in process of rewriting senate rules to allow exclusive legislation being tied together in conference and giving it an up or down vote with no changes. So they can attach gun control to a defense bill for example. All because he is butthurt at Paul and Lee for trying to block indefinite detention. They have an article about it at both red state and breitbart. Heaven fucking help us. It would be better if they just blew up the filibuster.

Yeah. that one's much more deserving. As is a bunch of others over the one they picked. "The contest"? Really?

The Blackadder one is odd. Didn't know it was really a sitcom. I guess anything "comedy" has situations of some kind in them, I guess? But "Goodbyeee"? Please. It's not that good. The whole 4th series is weak compared to the first three. The only one I can think that kind of makes the grade is the pigeon one. Maybe. The 4th series doesn't work as well due to the characters. It had everything going for it with the cast, Atkinson, Robinson, McInnery, Laurie and Fry all together (regularly) for the first time. But, only Baldric managed to recapture prior series heights. Blackadder wasn't evil enough, Percy was just meh, not the gullible idiot he was, George was just dumb, not brash, crass and brain damaged, Melchett was just loud and bossy, not thesly, evil mindednemesis of Blackadder...

Anyway, pretty much anything from Blackadder 1, 2 and 3 is better than the best of the 4th.

91 If you are going to hide a gun keep in mind metal detectors. Probably safer to stash one in an old junk car than bury it or put it in a tree (metal detectors can work other than on the ground) Maybe if you're still a good climber the tree works, especially if the tree is fairly close to a power line.

Personally I think it will be time to have some rolling roadblocks and shut down just in time deliveries to some Barry friendly urban areas if one of his aides doesn't knock some sense into him wrt to declaring open war on our constitution.

No May we take a look around? No go get a search warrant. X 50 million. Yeah I don't think so. Oh and the answer of BLAM at every 100,000th house may slow the progress.

100 It suffers from being "cutting edge" with current cultural events of the time, leaving it horribly dated even before the end of its run

It lived off of controversy because it wasn't that funny. If not for Caroll O'Conner's characterization, it would have died.

Basically, all of Norman Lear's sitcoms depended on an over-the-top character to carry it. The Jeffersons was written as well as Full House.

102 Thanks NDH-

While no one can predict the future, the past is often a good guide IMHO. Here is a great point from that site.

" If we look at the firearms restrictions that have been imposed on US
citizens over the last 200 years we see that all legislation has been
designed to restrict future purchases and transfers of firearms and even
attempts to totally ban firearms have allowed those who already possess
them to keep their guns."

103 Both my conservative philosophy and my religious faith compel me to disobey an unjust law. Millions of others will follow, peacefully. It will be civil disobedience on a massive scale. 113 I would encourage all of you to read some Alexander Solzhenitsyn in these trying times.

And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”

It probably won't be an out -and-out gun grab, but just more laws, rules, regulations to criminalize more people. Making every man a criminal (rather than making every man 'Free') is the real goal of the Left.

They don't want to rile up millions with reactionary fear and anger (all you "bitter clingers" out there), just more "common sense" gun control. And Mayor Bloomberg, noted "independent" is going to help.

Of course, the Media imbeciles will be on board, and I think it is high time to question the perogatives that they get to exercise under the First Amendment.

Hard to see just how this is going to shake out, but I'm going to make a wild guess and say it won't be as popular as some think it will be.

138 Saw an excellent little horror movie last night titled-

"The Revenant"

It starts with a 3 guys on patrol in Iraq having a somewhat humorous philosoohical discussion about power/morality/their present circumstances with our hero taking the moral view.

He turns off the headlights of their Hummer(?)momentarily to make a point and when he turns them back on there's a toddler in the middle of the road, who he cannot miss and is run over.

His buddies argue to leave but the hero cannot/will not and gets out to check but to his surprise- the toddler is perfectly fine.

The hero is then ambushed.

In the next scene we see his funeral. He is dead.

But later he comes back to life.

The rest of the movie plays out a bit like a horror version "The Dark Knight" with the philosophical discussion at the beginning of the movie playing out between our hero trying to be a moral monster vigilante, his amoral/immoral dope selling buddy all too accepting of the situation, an unexpected voice of reason, and his girlfriend who just wants things to be the way they were.

Very smart and funny writing with everything revealed through the characters actions.

The middle of the movie plays out like a gory buddy comedy with laugh out loud moments until becoming grimmer toward the end as things spin out of control. The ending like the end of the "Dark Knight" is cynical but exhilarating.

I don't want to over sell the movie and the weakest and most poorly written scene comes near the beginning at the hero's funeral but just hang in there till he rises from the dead, after that it's an excellent flick.

Currently, showing on Showtime and showtime's on demand for free. also, you can rent through Netflix and Blockbuster.

"Goodbyeee" is the weakest Black Adder episode of the entire series because it's the only one that tries strenuously to make a "serious" leftard point.

Why the fuck should I be forced to celebrate someone else's culture when everywhere I look they are destroying mine. This isn't a white thing or an African American thing or an Hispanic thing. I hunt with a Peruvian and a Tamil who are harder core western culture than I am. Gun restrictions are culture restrictions. IIRC, they haven't actually used gunpowder for commercial ammunition in ages -- mostly it's "guncotton" or nitrocellulose....which, among other things, is much easier to make (concentrated nitric + sulfuric acids and cotton).

There is still plenty of metal in any "composite" weapon sold on the market. Metal detectors are not quite what they are cracked up to be, though.

My suggestion is to bury them under the foundation in your house, and then put something heavy over the hidy hole, which will discourage any curiosity by the sub-mediocrities that will come to make up Law Enforcement in the years to come.

Get the Make Magazine 3D printer issue. You get a good survey of the state-of-the-art and many good reasons to believe that machining something will be preferable to printing it for a while longer.

264 For freedom lovers who fear a gun ban, watch "The Professional" (1994). The re-releases have really effed up any hope of any original version.
The basic premise is that you start with the long-range to work up close..
Flawed premise. Long-range is its own discipline/mos.
You want to save America, you got to stay loose, be flexible.
Literally.
When the neighborhood leader sends you room-mates for your comfortable home, when you are referred at the clinic to the psychiatrist because the Government knows you own a gun, when you refuse birth-control the Government mandates because of your religion, you'll know what to do.
Don't be a conscientious objector. Kill them all. Let God sort them out.

http://www.cncmasters.com/

Starting at several thousand dollare, bits are expensive and disposable, takes a considerable amount of time to cut tool steel, and barrel-making is another art entirely - you can make a CNC barrel but they are not considered to be as good for the kind of applications we're talking about.

Then there's testing the metal for flaws, pressure-testing, and the material costs themselves.

It can be done, I mean, people do make guns.

Spending two months negotiating 10 hours of savings is like driving to a supermarket three states away to save a nickel on your grocery bill. [...]

There are arguments to be made in favor of small government: My comrades and I have done our best over the years, with results that, alas, in November were plain to see. There are arguments to be made in favor of big government: The Scandinavians make them rather well. But there is absolutely nothing to be said for what is now the standard operating procedure of the Brokest Nation in History: a government that spends without limit and makes no good-faith effort even to attempt to balance the books. That's profoundly wicked. At a minimum, the opposition, to use a quaint term, should keep the people's business out in the sunlight and not holed up in a seedy motel room with Joe Biden all night. The stuff is pricey and precise, and limited to a few materials. Some of that restriction is legal, unfortunately.

There is nothing wrong with having that many clauses except HORROR! HORROR! HORROR!

All I am saying is it is a skosh hard to follow like that.

"The sweat of their labor froze on their bodies like little icicles. They shivered enough to loosen their grips, and stamped their feet in the fresh snow, trying to keep them from becoming icicles as well. Before them lay the fruit of the effort stolen from them, a gaping wound in the earth. The great dirty maw stared blankly up at them as they refused to look up, for fear that even a glance up would be seen in the glare of truck headlights and be taken as a sign of defiance. The guards may have held their rifles carelessly, but they seemed willing to use them with as little care."

I'd probably rewrite that a couple more times. Don't know the context.

Obviously that's not necessarily the style of the piece, and I don't know the context.

371 It's a Dillon. I actually got 2. RL. Hardly any die sets available in this great land. I got 9 and 308 'cuz 45 and 223 were unavailable, nor bullets nor brass. I'm still buying bulk ammo while it's available- reloading isn't worth it yet based on the prices I'm seeing
Frustrating. But I think all these folks who bought AR's recently are gonna be ready to pay VERY large when they realize that they forgot to stock up on any ammo. I think that's a tremendous opportunity no matter what happens in the next few months, which noone knows.
I also think that everyone's neglecting to prepare to reload 38 Special and 30-30, but there are tens of millions of these unregistered in the USA, and the owners are less likely to have any significant stores of ammo than the people who have focussed on the more military calibers. Brian Enos seems to have the Dillon stuff in stock, tho he's a MSRP guy. Shipping free over $400, so it may still work out better than local purchases. Gun shows are mobbed and panic pricing-
That's my free investment advice for this week, and I think you can bank on it.

I got curious and looked to if it was his father, Robert, but no. But it was worth looking just to see his real name was Alphonso Giuseppe Giovanni Roberto D'Abruzzo!

Damn.

Also, Alan Alda had polio at age ten and that would likely have been an automatic rejection.

I had an uncle who was very determined to serve during WWII and hid a childhood leg injury that almost left him crippled before they kicked him out of basic. He managed to get a Coast Guard job as consolation.

If you mean the Seafood Buffet, I couldn't tell you. At $45 it's bit more than my employer will let me expense.

Fortunately, a lot of the people we're working for feed us quite well. For instance, Lenovo's main showcase is in the Aquaknox restaurant in the Venetian. I'll likely spend the better part of two or three days next week doing support there and in the nearby Pinot. Between the two the food is incredible. Last year I made some ONT posts from there and expect to again this year.

I'm supposed to be off all day Wednesday but I don't know if I'll bother going to the convention center for the main show floor. So much of is thoroughly covered by web sites without having to endure the noise and crowds.

458 A report from behind enemy lines. As many of you know I post a lot over at the left wing site called Spcebattles (it is fun to mess with them) anyway they are all gungho about the recent NYT article about getting rid of the Constitution and many have really let the mask slip and want Obama to just start arresting any Republicans who disagree with him. They are all for banning and confiscating our guns and putting us in prison.

Now while I am not advocating violence we all know that something is going to happen and it will happen soon. We also need to know and accept the fact that we will be blamed as a group for that violence.

So we are left with two choices a. sit back and let it happen or b. launch a preemptive strike as it were. We need to do this by using the same language the left uses when it deals with violence committed by their side. They never outright condemn the person or people committing the violence, they condemn violence in a general way but in the next breath justify the individual's motives and goals.

Our leading new media bloggers need to start doing this now...as in right now.

Then when something does happen be aggressive in defending the motives and goals while blaming the left wing targets, don't extend them any sympathy. Make them look like nothing more then members of organized crime that got just what they deserved, dehumanize them. But again do it the way the left does, turn their own tools against them.

Posted by: CraigPoe at January 06, 2013 12:17 AM

The information was gathered legally, and they can publish it so at that point there's absolutely no legal recourse.

Should someone be killed or seriously injured because of that information, the plaintiff would have to prove that the paper knew of that possibility and acted in callous disregard for their safety. Getting it past dismissal by a leftist judge who either enthusiastically supports a socialist police state or could be blackmailed by the paper is a big hurdle.

There are powder / primer limits in a lot of fire codes, higher if they're stored separately / in a heavy wood crate or fire cabinet. The numbers may vary by county but are usually available online.

The Merovingians were a Salian Frankish dynasty that came to rule the Franks in a region known as Francia in Latin, largely corresponding to ancient Gaul, for 300 years from the middle of the 5th century.
The Merovingian dynasty was founded by Childeric I (c.457 – 481) the son of Merovech, leader of the Salian Franks, but it was his famous son Clovis I (481 – 511) who united all of Gaul under Merovingian rule.

The series ran from Sept 60 to June 64 and Tod got a new Vette for each new season, always convertibles.

The 61 had the high output 283 that put out the same amount of horsepower, and the 62 was the first year of the 327 which put out 360 hp with the fuel injection option. Not a quarter mile champ but not a weakling either. The 62 was the last year of the solid rear axle, so it wouldn't handle like the Sting Ray, although the Sting Rays did have some problematic oversteer.

704 The C7 is trying to be something it's not, and marketing to people who won't buy it. They're trying to go toe to toe with Lamborghini and Ferrari, and the Vette has never been that, the Vette is its own kind. It would be like Porsche turning the 911 into a Lambo rather than developing their own mid engined supercar.

So GM thinks the classic market for the Corvette is "getting too old"? It's the "old" guys who are their market and have the money for an extra car for funsies. The youthful hedge fund guys, dot-com millionaires, and movie stars aren't going to buy the Vette if they're thinking of a Lambo, it doesn't have the cache.

706 Since comments are starting to slow, I'll repeat a rant I've done before.

The essential flaw of the current constitution is that there is a two-chamber legislature. It should be three.

One chamber, as now, should represent the populace that lives under the government that is enacted.

One chamber, as it was before the seventeenth amendment, should represent the states that comprise the United States.

And one chamber should be established for those who would pay for government -- with one vote for every tax dollar paid.

If something can't bear a majority of those who would live it, those who would pay for it, and those who would ensure it was within its proper boundaries, it probably shouldn't be.

707 I'm late to the ONT, and I've only read about 400 comments, prolly nobody will see this, but here's my rewrite of the opening scene from the proposed book:

It was cold, bitter cold outside. Julie shivered as she looked down at her fingernails. There was a time when she took pride in her hands, she could still hear her mother's ghostly voice in her head "A woman's hands show her station", mom had said too many times to count. Mom never imagined this, Julie thought. There was a cut on her left ring finger, blood flowed sluggishly into the mud encasing her fingernail. Beyond the finger, Julie saw the fruit of her labor: a shallow pit, not even big enough to be a proper hole. Beside her, a dozen other Americans mumbled, stamped their feet or silently observed the pits they had been forced at gunpoint to dig with their bare hands. "This is crazy", Julie had thought, "Everything's near frozen, we need shovels to make a dent in the earth!". Well, she'd made a dent, but the chilling realization was that the powers that be didn't care about doing the job right, it was all just make work, designed to exhaust the captives beyond the point of resistance. Behind them, she heard an engine start. It was undoubtedly the armored car that had escorted them to here, a gentle swale in Rick Johnson's apple orchard. Her mind spinning crazily, Julie realized that she had lost her virginity to Dave Mellinger right over that hill some 25 years ago. That was a sweet memory, and she clung to it, unable to believe that her life would soon end here where in many ways it had begun. " READY!" came the shout from behind her. "AIM!". This can't be happening, she thought desperately, I'm a fucking American! NO! "FIRE!"

Julie's body tumbled lifelessly into the pit that she's so recently been forced to dig with her own bare hands. She'd done a good job, as she had with most things in her life, and only her left leg protruded over the berm. A bored Corporal in The People's Army walked over and kicked her leg into line with the rest of her lifeless body. He paused and bent at a body three corpses down and liberated a watch. A smile ghosting across his face, he turned and yelled to the waiting bulldozers; "Cover these fuckers up, we've got at least 10 more groups to get through tonight!" The big machines snorted, and jerkily moved forward to do their horrible work. Human inefficiency wouldn't stand in the way of the utopia to come. Nothing would.

Wow. That's what came out? Maybe I'm not as sanguine as I thought.

He was given this task because he was"sub". He knew he was because of the training tasks that he had been unable to perform with the rest of the boys in his age group last year. He knew this because he had been seperated from other boys that he had known since coming to the "High Safe" complex two years ago with his family. This had been a difficult time for him. His mother , father and two sisters had been given other places to be while he had been put with the boys who were to be trained. He had failed the first year's training and was placed in a group called the"subs." They did not treat the subs unfairly, everyone was treated with respect at the "High Safe" yet, subs were given to simple tasks, and the subs knew thatother boys who mastered the training were given the task of going to war to protect the "High Safe".
This created a mindset within the "subs". Though they never spoke of it, they all knew that there would come a time when a "sub" would be called upon to do something "Great and Special." This was all he could think to himself as he climbed onto the ridgetop in the dead of night..his first night outside the "High Safe' in the last 3 years and his only duty as they had told him, to see what was in the valley below, with his own eyes and to return to the "High Safe"and tell what he saw. He did not know the sky was clear of the black drones. The drones had not been seen for 3 days now, which is why they had sent him out. He was, after all, a "sub".

713 Richard, a book you might want to try and find is C.M. Kornbluth's 'Not This August.' It originally came out in 1955 but Tor republished it in 1981.

'Ladies and Gentlemen, the President of the United States...

Then came the inimitable voice, but weary, deathly weary. "My fellow Americans. Our armed forces have met with terrible defeat on land and sea. I have just been advised by General Fraley that he has unconditionally surrendered the Army of the Southwest to Generals Novikov and Feng.... His capitulation removes the last barrier to the northward advance of the armies of the Soviet Union and the Chinese People's Republic.... I must now tell you that for three months the United States has not possessed a fleet in being.... We are disarmed. We are defeated.... May God bless you all and stay you in this hour of trial."

With those words America ceased to be a nation, became instead a conquered satrapy, slated for genocide...'

That is the back cover blurb for the book. Kornbluth died in 1958, he was 34. The title is taken from a Hemingway quote from Notes on the Next War - "Not this August, nor this September; you have this year to do what you like. No not next August, nor next September; that is still too soon... But the year after that or the year after that they fight."

714 BeckoningChasm, I like it, Especially Taranga Leela and would pay $200 for the ones I like but I don't think my wife would let me hang them. I am sure you can move them. Have you brought them to any Comicon and conventions with the same clientel? BTW,@ $200 a pop barely covers your cost considering the size of the canvas. You have a strange artisticviewand I consider that a compliment. Normal is boring.

......

While I have to admit to the pieces not being in-line with my aesthetic, you are really talented. Sometimes, a lower price point works against you: The price can make it seem as if there is nothing special about it and, in this case, there is.

Perhaps you can pick out a couple of pieces and show them locally, if not in a gallery, then in a restaurant or bar for the upwardly mobile. Jack the price on those pieces because people who buy art often do it for the status as much as for the art itself.

716 I don't believe this will be the end of the road for gun owners.

History suggests that when people trust mainstream conservatives to defend a right or advance a cause, that right or that cause is lost. But while they support outside organizations that truly believe in that right or that cause, the struggle goes on.

The NRA and other pro-gun organizations will stand you in good stead.

The end will come when people let those organizations be demonized. But that time is not yet.

And it may never come.

719 TCM has been showing Fritz Lang's very disturbing movie M. The Nazis banned it but still offered Lang the job of being the Reich's film leader because Hitler liked Metropolis. Lang said he would think about it and hopped on a train to France.

The last thirty or so minutes of this movie is the payout. The criminal underground has finally captured the killer of little girls and puts him on trial. They are not angels, because of this killer the police are constantly busting their rackets. And in this trial is the whole argument of if someone so sick they have a compulsion to kill should just be locked up in an asylum or killed before he kills again.

Yeah, but a Glock 7... "You know what that is? It's a porcelain gun made in Germany. Doesn't show up on your airport X-ray machines, here, and it cost more than you make in a month."

It's critical to the plot of Die Hard 2, and is presented straight as real-world information needed for the background of the fictional plot. Would Hollywood lie?

Undetectable plastic guns showed up in comics too, and not in the more fantastic ones (where of course Lex Luthor can have something like that, but it would be irrelevant since his problem is Superman) but in the ones that aspired to real world relevance, as defined by left wing writers and editors. "Street level" heroes like The Question waxed wrathful over the evil gun industry, making all those undetectable plastic guns, apparently for no other reason than to pick up bucks off the terrorism trade.

Any working class, regular guy was expected to identify with hating guns, particularly Glocks, and the arms trade. Anything else would be pro-terrorist.

It's not that left wing propaganda is necessarily good, it's that it's pervasive.

I would like to make this You-Tube *newly* available to mobile users as well as PC users.

There are other performances by the artist, that you can view, from any platform!

You just cannot, and more importantly, none of your I-paddy, or tablety little sprogs will ever be able to see this!

729 Was 2012 The Year That American Orchestras Hit The Wall?

By and large, yes.

2012 will go down as a year of orchestral turmoil in the U.S.: Strikes, lockouts and bankruptcies erupted time and again as once seemingly untouchable institutions struggled financially.

Warning: NPR link:
http://tinyurl.com/agttdxz

It's impossible to cheer for cultural destruction. And this is where I do the left-wing thing and add BUT...

Classical music, like any other part of the subsidized culture machine, is left wing enough that occasionally they will go out of their way to make right-wingers uncomfortable.

The left is pushing the racial, demographic, cultural, policy and economic changes that are damaging to orchestras.

As typical SWPL (Stuff White People Like) types, they want Obama, and the kinds of policies he pursues, which inevitably means the consequences they are now suffering.

Why don't people have discretionary income for lots of orchestra donations? Why??

"Of course there are two signatures on every collective bargaining agreement, so some of it reflects what the musicians push for," Flanagan observes. "But some of it reflects what management seeks to sign off on. And it appears that over the years, many collective bargaining agreements have provided for more expense than the communities in which the symphonies are located can afford."

And this, according to Detroit Symphony Orchestra music director Leonard Slatkin, leaves an important question to be answered by each community: "How are we going to balance the incredible skill of these musicians, the need for music in the different communities, and what is a very difficult time in this country economically?" he asks.

Ultimately, there is no balance to be struck. They had a funding model that was only really made for good times, and were part of a liberal culture that is all for policies that guaranteed the end of good times.

Personally I'd put the password Odd Couple and Taxis Elegant Iggy in the top ten and put Archie in the dated bottom

It's strange to think that by exercising moderately, watching their diets and getting regular medical checkups, Scalia and Thomas can do more for the republic than many millions of ordinary Americans can accomplish with their greatest efforts.
