Hey, Maybe Being Fat Is Good For You

I want to run this article with a picture, but if I ran it with this picture, people would scream for eyebleach. So, pretend this picture appears right under the headline, and note before you click it you're going to see a very fat man. A very fat man.

He was the world's fattest man, but got a gastric bypass, and now he just looks awesome.

Anyway I've been hearing this story going around for a week: a meta-study finds that overweight people actually live longer than those at normal weight. And one level of people defined as "obese" -- lower end of the scale -- have no worse mortality than the normal-weight.

Grade 1 obesity overall was not associated with higher mortality, and overweight was associated with significantly lower all-cause mortality. The use of predefined standard BMI groupings can facilitate between-study comparisons.

Grade 2 and 3 obesity -- really fat and really fatter -- were, however, associated with worse mortality rates.

So, it's claimed, a little bit of comfort fat might be good for you, long-term.

Hey, it's a study. Must be true.

Here's a possibility: Given that we are generally never put through periods of starvation or hunger and have all the calories we could possibly want, our bodyweight has shifted upwards -- including our tendency to put on fat. Because we're just not built to have all the calories we could possibly want.

The people who remain thin tend to remain thin not because they're especially healthy but because they're a little on the unhealthy side, while the people who would -- in prehistoric times -- look healthy have tended to put on a bit of overweight.

Note that some very healthy and very active people are at "normal weight" -- they work out enough to keep off fat -- or thin but they're anomalies and don't impact the stats that much. Most people will wind up having weights in accordance with their metabolic bias.

So, anyway, my attempt to explain this postulates that it's not the overweight per se that makes people live longer, but those people are basically born a little healthier, and would have longer lives whether they were in prehistoric, lean times (in which case they'd be at the "right" weight) or in comfortable, flabby modern times (in which case they add 15 pounds).

I just made that up now. If it doesn't make sense, that would be why.

The other possibility is the Sleeper Hypothesis: That literally everything they once said was good for you is in fact bad for you, and vice versa.

There's also the possibility fact that there is a built-in bias in science to find positive results -- publish or perish -- and especially to overturn previous wisdom in a particularly dazzling way, so we might just be seeing imperfect science, made by imperfect humans, claiming to know things where we actually know little and periodically going through "revolutions" in thinking, not because we've made such great strides in our knowledge, but because our knowledge was so very limited in the first place it's relatively easy to postulate the complete opposite of the Old Theory and soon have a big glittering New Theory with just the same amount of (thin) evidence.

Old Theory: Carbs cause fat

Newer Theory: Carbs don't cause fat at all! Those old fuddy-duddies were all wet!

Newest Theory: Carbs cause fat. The last fuddy-duddies were all wet, while the fuddy-duddies previous to them had it just right.

When no one knows what the hell they're talking about it's a wide open field for paradigm-changing new studies.

38 From the American Heart Association

Obesity (a body mass index of 30 or higher)The term obesity is
used to describe the health condition of anyone significantly above his
or her ideal healthy weight. Don’t be discouraged by the term. It
simply means you are 20% or more above your ideal weight and you are not
alone. Between 60 and 70% of Americans are either overweight or obese.

Being obese puts you at a higher risk for health problems such as heart
disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and more.

40 This is anecdotal but I've been around the Cancer Center a lot in the past 2 years and I've noticed that cancer victims who are slightly overweight have an advantage over those who are slim. Cancer makes people lose weight (sometimes rapidly) and if you are normal weight or slim, it's hard to survive until the treatments start working. A little extra weight is almost like insurance for cancer victims.

41 Not to believe "studies" blindly (there are studies about AGW too, aren't there?) but I do remember the loonie left going ape-shit over the CDC study from several years ago that showed overweight people recovered from surgery better than "normal" people.

I think the split personality over it for the left is that on one hand they want a new victim group to "defend"; but at the same time they want to tell people how to live their lives so if being somewhat overweight doesn't matter or even has a minor benefit, that drives them nuts. ("Nutser"?)

43 Talking about getting fat on the dole ...

Red-faced state officials admitted last night they are trying to find as many as 19,000 missing welfare recipients — after the controversial taxpayer-funded voter registration pitches the state mailed to their addresses last summer were sent back marked “Return to sender, address unknown.”

The Department of Transitional Assistance contacted 477,000 welfare recipients who were on their books from June 1, 2011, to May 31, 2012, after settling a voter-rights lawsuit brought by Democratic-leaning activist groups that demanded an aggressive voter information effort by the state. That $274,000 push by DTA resulted in 31,000 new voter registrations — but revealed an alarming number of welfare recipients whose residency in Massachusetts can’t be confirmed.

“DTA is in the process of contacting those clients for which a forwarding address was provided to verify their addresses, as a change of address might impact their eligibility,” a statement from the agency said.

DTA critics expressed astonishment at the agency’s faulty address records — which were only uncovered by accident — saying it’s further evidence that the electronic benefits system sorely needs reform.

The risk of breast cancer, and Type 2 diabetes goes down even further with breastfeeding. Women who spend more of their lives pregnant or nursing are generally (well, in my observation, this one I don't have statistics for) not stick-figures as often as those who avoid child-bearing like the plague.

58 @38

Vic:

They found that BMI 25<30 "obese" lower mortality. They found no effect for BMI 30<35. Higher mortality above BMI 35.

So I think that's not contradictory of the AHA guidelines.

It's possible that the uptick in cardiovascular problems in the grade 1 obesity levels are compensated for by health benefits of other types, that average out in the population.

From the article:

Random-effects
summary all-cause mortality HRs for overweight (BMI of 25-<30),
obesity (BMI of ≥30), grade 1 obesity (BMI of 30-<35), and grades 2
and 3 obesity (BMI of ≥35) were calculated relative to normal weight
(BMI of 18.5-<25).

Relative
to normal weight, both obesity (all grades) and grades 2 and 3 obesity
were associated with significantly higher all-cause mortality. Grade 1
obesity overall was not associated with higher mortality, and overweight
was associated with significantly lower all-cause mortality.

101 Now, it doesn't "cause" it in a preterministic sense, like If poor Then criminal, but no one is worried about rich men sticking them up or breaking into their homes to steal DVD players and stereo equipment.

-----

That's not so much poverty as inequality. A society where no one had significantly more material things would still be a dangerous society for women (rape) and children or weak adults who look like they'd make a good punching bag on a bad day (barring other anti-crime measures). This would be true in a society where everyone had next to nothing or a society where everyone had what they needed. So no poverty doesn't cause crime.

It gets sticky because poverty does correlate to crime in so many ways. For starters, if your parents were criminals, chances are they raised you in poverty and taught you bad values. Or if your parents weren't criminals, but had little impulse control, they couldn't keep a job and raised you in poverty and passed along genes that predisposed you to poor impulse control.

Couldn't agree more - and I know this is likely to offend some, but even to call it "science" is, IMHO, quite a stretch. Modern Medicine is really just a collection of "best practices" handed down over the years based largely on uncontrolled collection of data.

FWIW, many people seem to think the great advances over the next 100-years (assuming we don't enter a new Dark Age) will be continuing advancement of gadgets and gizmos. I disagree - the advances will be in life sciences and understanding life and, specifically, how the human body actually works.

I have theories on how much of that data will be gathered, most of them quite unpleasant.

115 Here's another weird thing. I went to the Pioneer Museum in SLC and there are a bunch of portraits taken within 2 years of the trek west. If you don't know, the Mormons were driven out of Illinois, so in winter, often sick, they made up wagon trains and got started. Those that made it to SL valley had to create a viable culture from absolutely nothing - desert nothing, in fact. So now's there's a thriving city, etc., etc., but *here's the thing*. I could not get over how 'beefy' those pioneer women were after two years of essentially starvation rations, pulling the plows with their own bodies while their husbands pushed and steered behind, and on and on and on.

Why weren't they svelte if not anorexic looking?

If you're wondering why they had a photographer at that particular time, he was passing through on his way to California, and took pictures in exchange for lodging through the winter, supplies, etc.

Bone density is another confounding factor, I think. This is also purely anecdotal, but a good friend of mine in high school weighed 20 lbs more than me, and we were the same height and could wear the same clothes. We weren't hugely different on fitness, either---we were in cheerleading together. She was black, and black women have a much lower rate of osteoporosis than other races. I imagine that girls/women of all races who have good bone density are going to fall into that "just a little overweight" category and then live longer, since they're less likely to break their bones and fall and such.

164 The reason for this finding is that the BMI (or how they determine 'fat' or not) is complete and utter crap. Aside from distance runners, every athlete ever is fat. Per the BMI, at least. The much better measure for healthiness is body fat %. BMI includes all weight vs height, including the healthy stuff like muscles and bones and brains and lungs. High body fat is always going to be linked to problems. The fat doesn't just bulge outwards, it goes inwards and presses up against the lungs and other organs. That's why a fat man just sitting pants and gasps like someone in shape running their second mile.
The BMI was NOT developed by a doctor or team of doctors, it was an economist or statistician in Belgium who wanted a very basic way to measure health for sedentary populations. If you exercise 5 times a week? Not sedentary, BMI isn't for you. He was also very clear that it was never, ever, ever supposed to be used for any individual. Ever. Go to your doctor today, though, and they'll measure you by the BMI.
Belgians are just French people in disguise.

167 Regarding the Oklahoma pictures.
Until about 40 years ago if you wanted to eat it meant you getting and preparing food. If you wanted a candy bar, the local store had a small selection. Now, places to eat are all over the place. Junk food is available at the hardware store. If you're a just little hungry you can fill up in the car while your driving.
I don't think this was available to those square dancers.

Yeah, I think this is part of it. Coupled with their insistence on categorizing everyone by this number, which does not take into account your bone structure or body composition. A good example of this skewed crap can be found on my dad's side of the family. All the ladies are very big boned, and I mean in the real way not the Cartman way. They are also all built very wide. And all of them have been told they are obese based on their BMI. Rather than accept that they are just built larger and will never weigh what the BMI charts say they should to be "normal" every single one of them spends a goodly amount of their time trying to lose weight and the result is they all look terrible. Two of my aunts have lost all of their breast fat and are concave in the chest and the face. And none of them have come close to the normal weight the chart says they should be for their height. They're still classified as obese. Which is a crock of crap.

It's all about power and control. They want to control every aspect of your life. In addition for a certain group of people there is a strong desire to make "fatties" the enemy so that it is socially acceptable to attack them, belittle them and humiliate them just so they can work out their own little anger and self loathing issues.

184 If you watch old videos from the 70's or earlier, or even as late as the 80's, the people looked really skinny. I just watched one of John Denver yesterday and boy was he stick thin. Clearly something has changed.

I think people are too quick to assume, however, that it is only about eating more and getting less physical exercise. I see a lot of people who are physically active and who watch what they eat that still struggle with weight.

My theory is that something has changed in our diet and/or environment. It could be the chemicals in our food, such as MSG and its derivatives that are in everything. It could be the type of seeds and strains of grain that we consume, from corn to wheat or others. It could be high fructose corn syrup. It could be the myriad of antibiotics, birth control pills or other prescriptions we are taking now that we didn't used to take as much. It could be in the chicken and beef we consume that are fed from said grains that are altered from what they used to be, giving us eggs, dairy and beef that have less omega 3 fatty acids.

I don't know what it is, it could be a complex combination of things. Maybe scientists 100 years from now will figure it out. What I do know is that virtually everything the government recommends is wrong. Eggs, cream, butter and beef are not bad for you. Sugar and its derivatives, along with chemically processed oils, probably are. A healthy diet is one that has as little chemically added to it as possible.

That said, when I see how skinny people were in the 70's it looks a little jarring to me, almost too skinny. I like that people nowadays have some meat on them, just too much is not a good thing.

My flock of sheep was still small, so I'd never sheared any sheep before. I had them on a remote hillside, and wanted to shear them there for economy. I asked around, and a couple people said, "You want L_____ C_______." I got his number and called. His wife said, "He's at his camp, but he'll call you back this week."
Long story short (this was in the 1980s), this 75 year old Army Ranger WW II veteran was ripped at 75. He ate mostly his own lamb and beef, plus wild berries, and his wife's garden veg. His "camp" was where he lived, in a tent with his horse and dog, by the river, cooking over an open fire.
Yeah, he had firearms.
Ripped at 75. Still shearing sheep by hand on a hillside in the hot sun. Sleeping on a cot in a tent all summer.

225 It really depends on what you eat. I've always been a generally healthy eater -- that is, I would eat lots of veggies, chicken, fish, but I'd also have pizza, fries, etc. In May of 2000, at 5'8 and 32 years of age, I weighed close to 160. Mostly toned, but there was a bit of a gut. Then I got discharged from the reserves (honorably) and rediscovered THC. You know what a few bowls of Frosted Flakes will do to you? Make you really happy. Then I started trending towards 170 and the muscle-fat ratio was leaning towards fat. Then I started cutting out refined carbs, esp. added sugar. Oh, believe me, after a ginger square and an hour or two playing music in my studio (keyboards these days; working on a project), I'm devouring bags of frozen, no-sugar-added fruit, carrots hummus, and the leftover chicken boti cubes. I'm still 5'8, although I'm not 33, but I'm down to 150. Beyond that, my systemic numbers (all those things they lab test for when you get a physical) are pretty much right in the middle except for a few things like my cholesterol, which is super good (102 low; 90 high), and bp, which was 102/70 or so (which is normal for me).

Eat right, exercise, cut down on the stress, and masturbate regularly. You'll be healthy.

Bullshit. They're not that active, or they eat too much. It's that simple.

My theory is that something has changed in our diet and/or environment. It could be the chemicals in our food, such as MSG and its derivatives that are in everything.

My theory is that a lot of fat dumb asses who don't shit about chemistry and/or physiology are looking for excuses for being fat dumb asses.

Look, it's simple thermodynamics. If you're overweight, you're taking on more calories than you expend.

It's that simple. It's not "hormones," it's not what you eat, it's not anything else. Face it. Reality's a bitch, but reality bats last.

240 Empirical tests have shown that the things that make a skinny person burn 100 calories only burn 80 for fatties. This is true even if the fatty gets skinny later. There is something at work aside from just moving around.

Carbs do cause fat - they're the least nutritious of the 3 categories.
Fat, on the other hand, in and of itself is good for you.
Pay no attention to the USDA behind the curtain - they are directly responsible for the current obesity epidemic, and the coming diabetes epidemic. And you want to be healthy, because you don't want to be seeking medical treatment through Obamacare in the future.
This is why I'm giving up carbs. I've lost 20 pounds in 7 weeks, with another 20 to go. 3 cups of salad and 1 1/2 cups of low carb, high-fiber veggies. Max 20 grams of carb per day, and I'm never hungry. Never. Eating carbs makes you crave more. If you give up grains and sugar, you'll feel - and look - fabulous.

242 The reason the "normal BMI" death rate is higher than Grade I obesity is that included in the normal BMI group are a lot of people who have lost a lot a weight dying of cancer. (throw in skinny joggers and bikers hit by cars and wala!, you have a statistically significant separation from pudgy people.) Still, I feel a lot better at 6'1" 187 now and at age 22 then I ever did at 227 for the 18 years in between..

243 Jay Guevara I used to believe that too (it is simple math after all right) and I don't doubt that most fat people who try and blame environmental factors would probably be just as fat if they lived on the moon. HOWEVER--it turns out that it is NOT actually just "simple math." Consider--you probably poop almost every day--maybe three times a day for all I know. So does everyone you or I know. What does that tell you? Quite a bit of what we put in our mouths (indeed most) is NOT turned into fat and stored by our bodies---if that weren't the case we all would have weighed 1,000 pounds by the time were were one year old. Do you think that your highly complex chemical-factory body treats every meal the same, in terms of how much of a given amount of intake it decides to grab onto and store as fat and how much is just on a day trip through your body? It does not. How much of that mass you intake each meal gets turned into fat is determined not by exercise (which can only help to reduce fat after it has already been grabbed on to and accumulated by your body), but primarily by a single hormone---INSULIN. If your INSULIN levels are elevated right before or during (by) a meal, your body will store some of that meal that it otherwise would have shit right out of you. What causes insulin levels to soar? SUGAR AND REFINED CARBS--i.e., stuff we never ate through our million-year evolution. This is why the Atkins and "caveman diet" approachs tend to work. Now of COURSE all else being equal, a lazy bum who avoids sugar and refined carbs will not be as slim as a exerciseaholic who avoids sugar and refined carbs. However, EITHER ONE OF THEM WOULD LOSE WEIGHT with no change in their physical activity level whatsoever, if they eliminated the ubiquitous fructose and highly refined carbs from their diet. Capice?

245 Disa I have heard many people make similar statements--it must be great to lose significant weight almost "automatically." Your post makes it sound like you are going veggie---you can add about as much steak to your menu as you want without reducing the effectiveness of your approach though (red meat does not cause insulin to spike and is very nutrient rich). Who ever would have thought that something we actually EVOLVED TO EAT turns out to be good for us?

246 Please. This study uses BMI which is a bullshit measurement in and of itself. It will count lots of people with low body fat but lots of muscle mass as overweight.

247 I hate being so late to the party, but my own two cents:

I would warrant the biggest cause of obesity in our society is the lack of physical activity. This doesn't just mean exercise; we simply spend a lot of time sitting for long periods of time, something the body wasn't truly built to handle.

I read the results of a study from the Mayo Clinic where they measured people's activity (via special underwear, if you can believe it) along with their metabolism. If you would sit still for more than an hour, your resting metabolism would drop precipitously. The results demonstrated that for someone who sits for 8 hours a day (such as having a desk job), you lose so many burnt calories from inaction that you can't even make up the difference by exercising later.

I really think these sorts of studies point to the true source of obesity in western cultures. We've moved to information-based economies, so many people end up with jobs where they're either sitting all day. We drive to our jobs (and most everywhere), our entertainment is largely passive, or at least stationary.

Now, I called this the primary source of obesity; it's probably more correct to think of it as a one-two punch along side plentiful food. Still, we spend a lot of time and energy, both personal, societal, and political, dealing with the food and consumption aspect. We don't give much thought to the structural and cultural conditions that make us sedentary people now. We encourage exercise, but as the Mayo study demonstrated, an hour of exercise won't save you from 8 hours of desk work.

248 The study included people sick with cancer, dying, and on their way to death. People who naturally become thin because they're wasting and not eating. Surprising that the sick and dying have higher mortality!

Sorry to spam the thread guys, but this quite short fairly "scientific" article spells it out rather nicely. Short version: (1) what portion of every meal we ingest is turned into fat vs. pooped out is regulated by insulin; (2) insulin levels spike immediately upon eating refined carbs and sugar; (3) fat is fine UNLESS you eat highly refined carbs/sugar (as most americans do most of the time) in the same meal--in which case you will be sending an amber alert to your body: "HERE IT COMES HERE IT COMES DON'T BE LATE IT IS GOING TO BE A LONG COLD WINTER!"
