Analysis: Anyone Who Acknowledges We Have a Major Debt Crisis Is a "Lunatic"

"Lunatic Republicans" who believe crazy things like "you cannot spend a trillion more than you have every year and expect the math to work out in your favor."

Evans read a statement from an “overseas analyst” who said that the “economy was recovering” and that he expected bond yields to increase in coming months.

The analyst said that the only obstacle he sees to the continued expansion of the U.S. economy were “lunatic Republicans” who may bring about an “insane technical default” when they attempt to negotiate spending cuts as part of a deal to increase the debt ceiling limit.

...

“What about the lunatics that spent $16.4 trillion and want another check? Aren’t they the crazies, Kelly,” Santelli asked pointedly. “Why are the lunatics the people that say ‘overspending and creating too much debt’ are lunatics?’”

...

“Childish,” Santelli replied. “We need to get serious about this debt and quit calling people ‘lunatics’ that acknowledge it.”

If you have no actual logical response to someone's concerns, but are determined to avoid talking about those concerns, well, with logic not a path open to you, all you have on your side is emotionalism and deligitmization.

But don't worry, Top men are working on it.

Top. Men.

30 Aaaaand we care about the words of an "overseas analyst" because... ?

I do find it darkly humorous, though, that these people can say with a perfectly straight face that there's nothing insane about building up literally trillions in unfunded liabilities based solely on optimistic wishcasting. "Oh, I'm sure bonds will improve, so by all means spend, spend, spend!"

I realize the government doesn't operate like a household budget, but anyone with a lick of sense knows that spending money you don't have -- AND CAN'T JUST PRINT WILLY-NILLY, BERFUCKNANKE-- is the TRUE lunacy.

Reminds me of a rant my socialist dad spewed at me about how the deficit didn't matter and what the fuck were the Chinese going to do about it anyway. He actually referred to the interview Dick Cheney did where he stated that "the deficit didn't matter" as being the only thing on which he ever agreed with DC. Nevermind the fact that DC said this based on a rapidly-growing economy with projected increases into the federal coffers. That doesn't matter...and it's not just a little racist. Dontcha think?

Madness. Who thinks like this? So we're ok with borrowing a shit ton of money from the bank, throwing it around on hookers and blow, saying FU to the collector, and threatening to kill him if he moves to do anything to get his money? 163 The tax deal enacted this week, which leaves income-tax rates where they are for 99% of households while raising them sharply on the top 1%, was indeed a political victory for Mr Obama. For the first time in more than two decades Republicans had voted for higher taxes, by large numbers in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The deal raised almost as much money from the rich as Mr Obama had first sought, and he made no meaningful concessions on spending in return.

It was less of a victory for the economy. It leaves in place significant short-term fiscal tightening, while doing almost nothing to arrest the escalating national debt in the long term. Mr Obama himself conceded that at the White House: “We still have deficits that have to be dealt with,” he said, surely his understatement of the year.

Nor did the deal spell relief from the political polarisation and brinkmanship that produced the fiscal cliff, a collection of tax increases and spending cuts all scheduled for the start of 2013. It delayed the “sequester” (across-the-board automatic spending cuts) for just two months. It did not raise the legal debt ceiling. Without such an increase, in about two months the Treasury will have to suspend new bond issues and stop paying some bills.

“Instead of clearly demonstrating to American businesses…that we can still govern…we leave them saying, ‘Not again’,” complained Tom Carper, a Democrat and one of the few senators to vote against the deal. “Two months from now, we face the prospect of yet another debt-ceiling crisis and more turmoil.” Steve LaTourette, a Republican congressman, called the result “disgusting…It’s not even small ball—it’s a ping-pong ball,” produced by “sleep-deprived octogenarians on New Year’s Eve”.

216 Interesting, like the flood insurance debate.

Insurance companies stop providing flood insurance because the risk is too great and damage inevitable.

The US Government now gets into the insurance business and provides policies that private companies have deemed too high a risk. But don't worry...

States and municipalities (like NY and NJ) allow an ever increasing amount of people to live and build in these areas certain to be hit by disaster. They also collect gobs of tax money from residents over the years. On which they engorge their insatiable appetites.

The predictable disaster hits and Fatty Pants Christie and Political Hack King whine they want Federal money.

Oh and that flood insurance program is going broke. Shocking, I know.

I'm guessing many of these analysts are dependent on the faith that trading/spending continue unabated. The loss of faith by the market that capital restrictions will intervene means that his means of earning a living will diminish. No one makes such an irrational statement as this "analyst" unless the motive is personal gain. No one.

Traders gotta trade. Now. F*ck tomorrow. And analysts have to advise traders. No capital means no trading means no money... therefore there must be capital be it in monopoly money or platinum trillion dollar coins.

I think I happened to see this live. It left me wondering if I had witnessed just the latest gorgeous business babe show her Dark Side. Sigh. Kudlow is pretty lonely over there on CNBC. Most of the other capitalists over there are "moderates", which means they don't really have a clue, but there are a few for-real die-hards, even though Melissa Francis jumped ship to FBN.

Santelli, in case anybody doesn't remember, is the guy who coined the term "Tea Party". It's only appropriate for him to push back against how theTea Party is constantly being labelled as "extremist". Call me an Old Fogey, but I never thought I'd live to see the day when honoring the Constitution and supporting a balanced budget was "extremist".

Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis made her
ubiquitous post-NFP appearance on CNBC this morning and spouted the
usual propaganda. However, while discussing how wonderful the ATRA was,
the seemingly slap-happy Solis noted how great the fact that emergency
unemployment benefits were extended for millions of people was - and
that thanks to that (and the magic of the Keynesian multiplier),
millions of jobs were saved. So, to sum up, paying people not to work, saved millions and millions of jobs? Indeed America, indeed.

339 >>>and that he expected bond yields to increase in coming months.

Heh that is the statement of someone so amateurish that they sound like they haven't even taken the economics 101 survey course in college.

I expect bond yields to increase in coming months as well. And that is NOT a good thing.

What is "Bond yield?" It is the amount of money a bond makes you. What sets "Bond yield" 2 things. (Face value of the bond) - (Cost to acquire the bond) and time to maturity.

What does bond yields increasing mean? A bond is like a loan. Increasing yield is akin to increasing interest rates. Bond yields increasing means it is getting more expensive to borrow money.

What causes money to become more expensive?
1. A surplus of qualified borrowers and a shortage of investment capital. (Not the problem right now)

2. Inflation. (Bonds must yield better than inflation to be salable)

As bond yields increase how does that effect US debt? The effective interest rate on the US debt has to rise for bond yields to be attractive enough to continue to sell.

Bottom line, inflation rising and interest rates rising in a flat lined economy on the brink of recession. Oh and disco and bell bottoms become popular again. Stagflation.

The best part. Speed of money increases as inflation rises speeding the process up so long as the fed does not raise the prime rate (during a down economy) to slow it down it will become self feeding like a forest fire. With the amount of reserve capital out there this is just a ticking time bomb for hyperinflation.

Mr Overseas Analyst has just prophesized an event which if it were to actually occur would be the beginning of the end.

Perhaps gun records? Or maybe a list of every medical procedure your neighbor had? Or the Home address of University Comparative Medicine Chairmen so you can harass them (and likely assault/threaten them).

345 trillion dollar platinum coin.

I laugh

but in Milton Friedman's book 'Money Mischief' he recounts the tail of the stone coins of the Yap Islanders (Caroline Islands), one of which was lost at sea, yet retained it's value and title to that lost coin continued to trade even though no one had physical possession of it.

This platinum coin idea could work. It doesn't even have to be real. Just say it is on deposit with the fed. It's just an accounting entry in a computer database. Kinda like a virtual reality.

I say, gopherit! Fundamental change is what we want, and we want it NOW! It'sa get out of debt free card/coin.

351 326 sure but somehow i don't see how forcing a current crisis based on a hypothetical future crisis accomplishes anything, except the GOP committing suicide.

the continuing resolution is something else, they could get into a huge fight about that like the mid-'90s. i just mention "optics" cuz it's sort of hard to separate things when the long-term goal is to recapture the Senate/presidency, a situation where complaints about wussiness would make more sense cuz it's not just one chamber.

358 I genuinely hope Obama goes for the trillion dollar platinum coin "solution" just to fully complete the picture that we are operating in a banana republic.

If Obama threatens to bounce Social Security checks, let him. I don't see him coming out ahead in something like that, especially when all the stories come out about what's being funded instead.

I do think the Republican House though should be ready with a bill that prioritizes what gets funded first like SS, MediCare, the military, etc if they plan to have a real showdowm.

The trillion dollar coin would work.

The US has 72 trillion in recoverable oil sands on federal land at current prices. We could have the Department of the Interior sell the right to that oil to a quasi-government organization that would manage the sale and extraction over the next few hundred years for 72 trillion.

Pay off the debt, eliminate the interest portion of the yearly deficit. Rebuild the infrastructure and throw a good party. Hell, pay off all student debt, consumer debt and mortgages. As long as you're pushing the reset button, you might as well pound on it.

The U.S. is the only country in the world with the ability to pull off such a blatant accounting trick. If any other country objected, we would crush them. It's time for us to stop fighting the inevitable and manage the madness instead of constantly swimming upstream.

Shit is as simple as you want it to be.

360 >>>hypothetical future crisis

Hypothetical suggests no experimental data supports the conclusion. This is simply not the case. We have plenty of data that shows how fiat currencies implode (explode?) when monetary policy gets too loose. So our future would be at least "theoretical" with the only thing preventing it from being a certainty is Japan, and however they managed to brainwash their population into perpetually propping up their currency in a nation wide ponzi scheme.

That which cannot last, won't. And I fully expect, US, Japan, Europe, and China to all crater simultaneously in one big "the first climber to fall rips the other three off the mountainside" cataclysmic crash.

The only way out of this (Since even europe biting it takes us with it, yeah, bet on europe, safe bet there) is to ratchet spending down like no one in washington has even dared to suggest, RIGHT NOW! We won't do it, so the coming crash is as much theoretical as a train hitting me when I cannot convince myself to step off the tracks.

Coming our way like a freight train from Hell. Inflation's been largely hidden so far from low-information voters aka dumbasses but it's there, especially in food prices: lower weights, smaller portions, packaging tricks to hide reduced volume, etc. It can't be hidden much longer. Seems to me too that this $1 trillion coin thing is dependent on public faith that this minted and franked and very singular piece of platinum is truly worth $1 trillion. The whole idea is absurd, surreal, scary beyond measure.

Finally, it seems to me Obama and the Democratic Party leadership are deliberately orchestrating a catastrophic systems failure, which they will then use to further their 'transformational' agenda. That analyst's remark about lunatic Republicans is just one more attempt to soften up the public beforehandto the idea that the GOP is/will beresponsible for the very, very hard times coming our way.

Pundits like Mark Steyn talk and write rather blithely about the coming crash, as if what's about to happen is an abstract event viewed from a distance, with scholarly detachment. Maybe the extremely well-off can afford to look at it that way. Not me. Not anyone I know.

Hyperinflation only occurs when you create money out of thin air. You need a hard asset to back up the value of your currency.

That is why using the 72 trillion in oil sands to back up the currency would work. It wouldn't work for any other country, but it could for us. Only the biggest and strongest get to say what is bullshit and what isn't.

369 troyriser: "Pundits like Mark Steyn talk and write rather blithely about the coming crash, as if what's about to happen is an abstract event viewed from a distance, with scholarly detachment..."

I think it a mistake to chastise Steyn specifically. He's been sounding the alarm for years and it's been more than just scholarly detachment. Sure, stylistically his writings appear above the fray to some extent, but he is not. He's actually down in the dirt exposing the inevitable collapse and doing it more forcefully than most anyone just without the use of the profane.

Steyn is spot on. He knows what's coming. He's just using the rhetoric of a higher class to try and shake the lapels of "intellectuals" who remain in denial.

Chicago did something like this on a smaller scale, selling the rights to manage parking meters to a private company for a billion dollars. The problem was that the money was supposed to last 100 years and they'd only use the interest, not the principal, but they ran through that billion in a few years. So, you need to put safeguards in place to avoid the same thing at the Federal level. I'm all for it and I'd love to see those energy resources in private hands, but that's an awful big temptation to throw in front of spendthrift politicians.

BOOOOOOSH!!!1!1! and that they can perform simple mathematics. Anything to take the blame off their boyfriend, I suppose. Or perhaps it's because conspiracy theories and long-disproven memes are, as Ace said some time ago, much more entertaining than depressing reality?

But it still doesn't explain why Greece is decidedly more broke in spite of no 2 UNFUNDED WAAAAAAAAAAARS or EBIL BOOOSH, though. I used to think having no sense of history past a decade was a prerequisite for being a leftist. Now I see I was wrong: they can't even remember what happened a year ago.
