| First Paycheck Of The Year: Schadenfreude Is A Poor Substitute For CashThe government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods. ~ H.L. Mencken* As a CPA and member of the eevillll group of millionaires and billionaires with an annual family income over $450,000, I wasn't surprised at all when the direct deposit hit this morning. But for the low-information voter crowd, well ...
Happy New Year and happy payday! Thank goodness our “lord and savior” Obama signed the fiscal cliff bill into law after proudly proclaiming, “Under this law, more than 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small businesses will not see their income taxes go up.” Promises, promises. While PolitiFact will likely rate Obama’s statement “Mostly Swoon,” around 70 percent of Americans are going to pay more taxes in 2013. If you like your payroll taxes (and even if you don’t), you can keep them and pay two percent more than you did in 2012. ...That's a nice collection of tweets the Twitchy folks pulled together. They of course referenced the awesome DU post in the sidebar, too. That one needs to be bronzed. What happened that my SS withholdings in my paycheck just went up.What. Happened? You reelected a lying SCOAMF. That's what happened. Now don't get me wrong, this tax increase sucks. I'd much rather have more money to spend on exotic vacations, foreign sportscars, yachts, precious jewels, private aircraft, small islands and other things we millionaires and billionaires making over $450,000 a year and living in one of the highest cost-of-living areas in the country waste our massive stacks of excess cash on. But the fact that we have to send that money to the government now instead hurts the folks that work in those industries a lot worse than it hurts us. Drew M.'s been saying something for a while that can't be repeated enough (paraphrasing): shielding people from the consequences of voting for "free stuff" is a losing battle. So welcome to your tax increase, Obama voters. Elections have consequences. * Quote via today's Transom. Comments1

Economic justice does not come for free, you haters. Why can you not free yourself from your racist hostility to Barack Obama's wise solutions for the problems he was left by that stupid faux-cowboy who pretended to be Texan? The illegal wars against brown people had to be stopped, and now have to be paid for. This money can now be used to aid the poor and downtrodden, help the spread of correct thoughts, and stop right-wingers like all of you.

Even my wife, who's normally disengaged told me last night "Tomorrow's Paycheck will be my smallest [for this pay year.]"
She put together a few things. 1) She worked no overtime for the first time in a while and 2) Her pay raise hasn't kicked in for this paycheck (which was the last weeks of December) but the Tax increase has. Indeed, it's quite short. However, I think she's unaware that despite getting a raise (and it was a nice one), due to increased insurance, higher FICA and something I can't figure out what ADP's tax estimator is doing, our Take home pay is more or less stagnant (within about $25/week, I had to make some guesses on insurance cost from memory.) I got a teeny raise this year and it's all going to pay the higher SS tax. My husband got no raise (he is a NJ stateemployee and has had no raise in 5 years) and his first paycheck today is down $80. That's not chicken feed for us. One good thing is that my bonus is considered 2012 income even though I won't get it for another 2 weeks, so the withholding will be at the 2012 rate.
Of course, I knew this was coming so I have planned accordingly. Of course, the Obama voters didn't. Posted by: rockmom at January 04, 2013 11:04 AM (NYnoe) 35

The hilarious bit for me is that I opposed the payroll deduction holiday and am actually pleased that it expired. Make people see how much it hurts to pay for an infinitesimal part of our current mandates and then point out how much more has to be paid to actually fund them. HeatherRadish has a great point in the post below that the next step is to explain to people that this isn't paying for their SS. No, no, no, it's paying for everyone currently on SS of whatever form. There is no account with your name on it where this money goes. It simply gets fed into the gaping maw of the Federal government who then lies and says it's in a lockbox when, in actuality, that lock box is a filing cabinet holding IOUs from the Treasury Department. Here is the fundamental problem of the Obama voter. They have nobasic math skills. Over the weekend, I went shopping for baby furniture and Babies R Us had a sale on a particular brand of furniture that said 40% off when you buy 2 pieces of furniture. So I asked what happens if I buy 3 pieces, does the 40% apply to the whole order or just to 2 pieces. She wasn't sure, but told me she would give me the same 20% discount anyway. I asked why she wouldn't give me the 40% discount, and she said because the discount was really 20% off each piece of furniture and when you bought 2 that added up to 40%. For10 minutes I tried to explain to her the fallacy of her math mistake, but she couldn't seem to grasp it. In any event, I think the sale only applied for the 2 pieces, so at least I got the third for 20% off.

Couple this story with the news today that African American unemployment spiked up to 14% in December, and then ask yourself why exactly do lower income folks vote for Democrats? 2% on SS payroll taxes is moderately painful for me, because I pay the whole thing up to $113k. But it works out to less than 1% of my total income, and it comes out of a bigger pool of "marginal" dollars. It's not going to keep me from paying the mortgage or car payments or parochial school tuition. GOP should have screamed how TFG was stealing from SS, so people won't get mad at his high gas prices. Posted by: Deli LLama at January 04, 2013 11:34 AM (lGu1O) 181

There's a double whammy on typical wage earners here, has anyone mentioned that yet? 1. Most people live paycheck to paycheck, spending what comes in. Then they get a tax return in Feb or so, and use it to catch up where they are behind and get a few goodies. 2. "Take-home pay" just decreased by 2%, meaning consumption will drop as people will have 2% less to spend. 3. When tax return time comes next month, returns will be lower due to less withholding last year. Less bump from the return to catch up bills or spend on that new TV. AmIright? Still, they will have less in Jan, Feb, and March so those who really
played it close will have to spend their tax return on catching up instead on spending it into the spring and summer. Yep. And in some ways that makes it worse. A lot of people are going to jack up their withholding deductions- which normally doesn't kick in for a pay-cycle or two (depending on your HR department). So they'll get their return and play "catch up" and they'll have set the deductions lower to make up for the increased FICA taxes. Then, next year they'll be expecting a refund. Many of them will get them, albeit reduced. Many others will find they've broken even. Many others will find they suddenly owe Uncle Sam some more money. I'd settle for a rogue wave. Riptide. ------ All the money you earned (that the withholdings came out of) in 2012 is taxed/"put into the SS lockbox" at the old rate. When everyone learns what they owe or are getting back, it will be based on the old rate. The new rates are for money earned this year, so the teensy return will come when you file your 2013 taxes in Feb-April of 2014. Another thing is that the biggest hit is on SS withholdings, which is just GONE---you don't get refunded for that except the very broke with EIC (sort of---the point of EIC was to make up for that, but I'm not sure if it's actually indexed to the withholding rate and it's capped at a certain dollar amount). But with everyone having less immediate money to pay off their Christmas excesses, or just pay their regular bills, I bet those awful "refund anticipation loans" are going to make H & R Block and Jackson-Hewitt a killing, because people will need that money pronto. So, some terrible people who prey on those who don't know how to do math will make some money. Silver lining? Posted by: Jenny Tries Too Hard at January 04, 2013 11:50 AM (b+8h9) 264

I used to go into best buy, talk them into a corner and then walk out with what I wanted. Not on a regular basis mind you. Usually when my computer broke under extended warranty. (The last time that happened was right during the Vista upgrade. They wanted to unload the last XP computer on me even though it had 1 stinking USB port. They claimed the OS upgrade made the others excluded because they weren't "materially the same" or something. I talked them round and round discussing how taking a hit on the number of USB ports was not "of equal performance" until they decided I could just have the value of that computer towards another. We had that talk yesterday. Personally, I think it's a great idea. Show people exactly how much money they need to set aside to pay all their taxes. Make them write a check for each amount, not just one check that is a blanket one for all tax liabilities. Make them physically write out different "Pay To The Order Of" fields to teach them how many fucking governmental departments have their hands down their pockets. Here's my take on what will happen: People will be too broke by the time the first statement comes to pay ANY of their taxes. Why? The same people will find themselves suddenly "rich" and will promptly blow most or all of it on the usual stupid shit, leaving nothing left to cover what they owe. What the govt will do then is to auto-garnish their wages to make sure they have enough to pay their taxes, and then we're right back to square one again. And maybe just because it'd be fun to have a serf state. I read that as "surf state." ========= Oh no: Serfs. We might need serfs in the New South. I mean, there exists--and always will exist--a certain number who want nothing more in life than to be secure, a minimal level of security will do, and their preferred method of security is to prostate themselves before another. Skin color is irrelevant, this attitude is engrained in mankind and finds better hold among some than others. The FSA and the Democratic Party exist for this very reason. This "Serf State" would provide "farms" for them to work, live and breed. Posted by: RoyalOil at January 04, 2013 12:20 PM (imtbm) 407

Proving that I'm a) nuts, b) a geek, or c) both, I've actually gamed this out, some. Basically, the Texas Federation would start (as in: almost simultaneously) with TX, LA, OK, AR and maybe MS. From there, it wouldn't be long before AL and FL would petition to join, and possibly CO, NM, AZ, and UT. Not long after that, we get basically the rest of the South.
With the resulting energy resources, shipping lanes, military installations, etc., we'd be an economic powerhouse in no time. I've been doing the exact same thing and come to much the same conclusions. I've taken FL out of the Federation column though, after Nov. 6th. Not sure we can get CO either but if we have CO surrounded (same with NM) it can happen. Mainly I'm plotting my own escape from New Yorkistan so I don't end up in the conquered territories. I loved living in TX back in the 80s, and assuming there are any jobs left in my field when IT happens, I'll need top be near a seaport. Houston is looking best for me right now. 399 By the way, who else thinks that Tax Withholding should be done away with?
----- We'd have to collect the taxes monthly or quarterly, or maybe just attaching a bill where the pay stub is now. Otherwise we'd end up building a whole lot of debtors prisons and paying them with IOUs. I kind of like the idea of a bill where your paystub is now (or just handed out by your employer if you get direct deposit). People absolutely would fall behind, and the feeling wouldn't be as harsh as a big-ass check once a year, but it would be a start. According to Gallop, 65% of Americans believe that 2013 will be a year of economic difficulty.
At first, I thought that meant that Obama obviously rigged the election, because there's no way that 65% of the people would re-elect someone who is destroying our nation. But then I remembered the free shit army, and the fact that everyone I know who worships Lord Obama still likes him, and I realized that Sir Golfs a Lot has, with the aid of the media, completely disconnected himself with the economy. No matter what he does, no matter how bad it get's it's the "Republicans" fault, and masses eat it up like free iphones. We are so screwed. Posted by: shibumi at January 04, 2013 12:24 PM (z63Tr) 428

NO WAY!
The 47% that pay no income tax Yeah I get that argument. But in my mind, the reason why SS has been unassailable as a program is for two basic reasons. 1. Everybody pays into it and so feels it is "their money" 2. Everybody (who lives long enough) draws from it. If I can't get rid of it outright, then I want it to be what it really is, a welfare program. Not everybody gets it, and it is payed for using normal (not special set aside funding) funding. Decoupling the taxpayers feelings of entitlement to the program. Then maybe we can get rid of it someday. That along with a separate issue of flattening the tax rate. so that a far greater portion of the US has "skin in the game" to quote someone notable for giving reasons why taxes have to be raised. As it stands it doesn't really matter. It is too late for all of that. SS and our tax system will bankrupt us and send us into collapse. So their is no long term solution to either problem that can be seriously entertained. The current income tax system is unconstitutional anyways. Oh, the government can tax income, sure. But the government cannot use the incoem tax to devise what is effectively a violation of the Constitution's prohibition on per capita, or direct, taxation. In other words, a flat rate income tax would be Constitutional, but taxing different people at different rates is not Constitutional.
At one time, pre-FDR, the Supreme Court understood this. But ever since the infamous switch-in-time, the Court has failed to discuss this principle in its rulings, just as in the recent ObamaCare decision. Uphill from Denver is just going to have to be like Danzig. Can't see a way to connect their dot to the western fringe. And Iowa, that's real spotty. ST2:WoK was perfect and does not need to be re-sequel-ized in any way.
Well I should probably explain why I think almost certainly it is Kahn. SPOILER In the opening of the trailer the antagonist is recruiting. And he is doing so by promising a cure to some incurable ailment suffered by the daughter of his potential recruit, Kahn possesses the necessary genetic modification technology to cure almost any disease. In the mid trailer Spock is seen trying to dormantize a volcano and gets stuck in it while it is erupting. Rather than be rescued he sites the violation to the prime directive of exposing Enterprise and states the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. In the final part the antagonist is monologging and states "You would do anything for your family" I take this as a double entandre not only referring to how he gains supporters but also to all the genetically altered humans who considered themselves brothers and sisters. /SPOILER Posted by: MikeTheMoose is Shrugging at January 04, 2013 12:39 PM (0q2P7) 498

What do you think a prohibition on direct, per capita taxation is for? Posted by: JohnJ at January 04, 2013 12:32 PM (Tt6ky) ________________ You keep mentioning this word, constitution. HUH? Why would you go to Michigan or Illinois.
I had to drive through Illinois to get to Radish Family Christmas. I got a kick out of the "guns save lifes" Burma-Shave-style signs along I-74 in the east, and there was a neat Knights of Columbus billboard outside one of the cities depicting Joseph playing with Baby Jesus while Mary slept, but other than that...I don't want to ever again in my life hear anyone from Illinois tell me Indiana is boring. Posted by: JohnJ at January 04, 2013 01:16 PM (Tt6ky) The alternative to voting for the lesser of two evils is awaiting the inevitable and being as well-equipped as you can to deal with it. It is also a delusion to believe that the folks who brought you $33b in 'savings' at the last debt ceiling debacle will accomplish anything but make diehard republicans weep into their beverage of choice as they realize this is what their leaders dub as "within our capabilities". "The alternative to voting for the lesser of two evils is awaiting the
inevitable and being as well-equipped as you can to deal with it." That's not an alternative. You can do both at the same time. Regardless, voting isn't the best way to control politicians. If you want politicians to do the right thing, then you have to work to make the right thing popular. Politicians do what is popular, without regard to right and wrong. Those who voted for Mitt were hoping he'd have some creative solutions to the economic problems. Problem is, with each new security briefing, the more the guy found out, the less he wanted the job. Even mitt's competitive nature couldn't overcome his fear of the economic travesty we are facing. It's better to have someone in the WH who doesn't know what's going on so the fear factor is removed and they have the delusion that they can fix things. Ace's Prophesy:
"Likewise this sort of thing -- the "taking delight" or laughing at some kind of human flaw or sin -- is of such a de minimis or venial nature that I wonder if we overconcern ourselves with this sort of thing in order to avoid thinking too much about more serious things."And that's what this constant tearing down of Republican candidates is. If we lower taxes how will the deficit get paid down? No, REALISTICALLY. So all the "purists" insist that it's their way or the highway and anyone can see from simply reading here that they all really want different things so the Republican Party is basically as long as people maintain this viewpoint unrepresentable. These people have ABSOLUTELY NO mission focus- their focus is on the personnel instead. So as a result the mission (defending the Constitution and the preservation of America) gets absolutely trashed and all they have to say about their part is to crow about their ability to find fault with those who actually enter the arena to represent them. As of right now either aDem will win or a Republican will: you put the Dem in office and expect some acclaim for standing on principles??? You completely failed to address the mission: Mission First is how they express it in groups where important things need to be done and important decisions need to be made. And eman besides your specialty of talking shit let's see you put forth something positive that will actually get theMISSION accomplished, not just give you the warm fuzzies about yourself for your Republicanner-than-thou pretentiousness Posted by: DAve at January 04, 2013 02:40 PM (XDC0v) 635
