Thank goodness our “lord and savior” Obama signed the fiscal cliff bill into law after proudly proclaiming, “Under this law, more than 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small businesses will not see their income taxes go up.” Promises, promises. While PolitiFact will likely rate Obama’s statement “Mostly Swoon,” around 70 percent of Americans are going to pay more taxes in 2013. If you like your payroll taxes (and even if you don’t), you can keep them and pay two percent more than you did in 2012. ...That's a nice collection of tweets the Twitchy folks pulled together. They of course referenced the awesome DU post in the sidebar, too. That one needs to be bronzed.
What happened that my SS withholdings in my paycheck just went up.What. Happened? You reelected a lying SCOAMF. That's what happened. Now don't get me wrong, this tax increase sucks. I'd much rather have more money to spend on exotic vacations, foreign sportscars, yachts, precious jewels, private aircraft, small islands and other things we millionaires and billionaires making over $450,000 a year and living in one of the highest cost-of-living areas in the country waste our massive stacks of excess cash on. But the fact that we have to send that money to the government now instead hurts the folks that work in those industries a lot worse than it hurts us. Drew M.'s been saying something for a while that can't be repeated enough (paraphrasing): shielding people from the consequences of voting for "free stuff" is a losing battle. She put together a few things. 1) She worked no overtime for the first time in a while and 2) Her pay raise hasn't kicked in for this paycheck (which was the last weeks of December) but the Tax increase has.
Indeed, it's quite short.
However, I think she's unaware that despite getting a raise (and it was a nice one), due to increased insurance, higher FICA and something I can't figure out what ADP's tax estimator is doing, our Take home pay is more or less stagnant (within about $25/week, I had to make some guesses on insurance cost from memory.)

Bought a house out of foreclosure and now will be able to get out of Milwaukee County for the greener pastures of Ozaukee...of course my current home isn't even on the market yet.
Of course I may need to take up smoking for a couple of months with two mortgages...once I sell the Milwaukee County house and I get into Ozaukee my property tax savings will be immediately gobbled up by the payroll tax.

The hilarious bit for me is that I opposed the payroll deduction holiday and am actually pleased that it expired. Make people see how much it hurts to pay for an infinitesimal part of our current mandates and then point out how much more has to be paid to actually fund them.
HeatherRadish has a great point in the post below that the next step is to explain to people that this isn't paying for their SS. No, no, no, it's paying for everyone currently on SS of whatever form. There is no account with your name on it where this money goes. It simply gets fed into the gaping maw of the Federal government who then lies and says it's in a lockbox when, in actuality, that lock box is a filing cabinet holding IOUs from the Treasury Department.

Ugh. FICA taxes and federal income taxes all go to the same pot. The fact that they are called something different or in theory are to support different things is meaningless. There is no difference in cutting FICA taxes or Federal income taxes. A tax cut is a tax cut, and a tax increase is a tax increase.

A quick breakdown of how that $120-ish a month would've bought the newest birth control around, the kind that controls acne, reduces cycles to 4 times a year (not that that's a great idea, but whatever) and makes your sweat smell like daisies in the spring rain, never mind the $4 generic PLUS the doctor visit to get it...

There's a double whammy on typical wage earners here, has anyone mentioned that yet?
1. Most people live paycheck to paycheck, spending what comes in. Then they get a tax return in Feb or so, and use it to catch up where they are behind and get a few goodies.
2. "Take-home pay" just decreased by 2%, meaning consumption will drop as people will have 2% less to spend.
3. When tax return time comes next month, returns will be lower due to less withholding last year. Less bump from the return to catch up bills or spend on that new TV.

And a LOT of people who get EIC count on the big return check in February or March to get them caught up from what they (over) spent on Christmas, on credit cards and such. Even those who don't overspend on Christmas use it to do sensible things like put toward their kids' summer daycare or buy spring and summer clothes.

place. It is not a tax increase, but going to the orginial rate. That
money was taken from SS and not replaced. Some of you complaining will

Yep. And in some ways that makes it worse.
A lot of people are going to jack up their withholding deductions- which normally doesn't kick in for a pay-cycle or two (depending on your HR department). So they'll get their return and play "catch up" and they'll have set the deductions lower to make up for the increased FICA taxes.
Then, next year they'll be expecting a refund. Many of them will get them, albeit reduced. Many others will find they've broken even. Many others will find they suddenly owe Uncle Sam some more money.
I'd settle for a rogue wave.

I just hope enough people starting asking the question as to why their taxes went up when Obama said 95% wouldn't see a tax increase.

All the money you earned (that the withholdings came out of) in 2012 is taxed/"put into the SS lockbox" at the old rate. When everyone learns what they owe or are getting back, it will be based on the old rate. The new rates are for money earned this year, so the teensy return will come when you file your 2013 taxes in Feb-April of 2014.
Another thing is that the biggest hit is on SS withholdings, which is just GONE---you don't get refunded for that except the very broke with EIC (sort of---the point of EIC was to make up for that, but I'm not sure if it's actually indexed to the withholding rate and it's capped at a certain dollar amount).
But with everyone having less immediate money to pay off their Christmas excesses, or just pay their regular bills, I bet those awful "refund anticipation loans" are going to make H & R Block and Jackson-Hewitt a killing, because people will need that money pronto. So, some terrible people who prey on those who don't know how to do math will make some money. Silver lining?

I used to go into best buy, talk them into a corner and then walk out with what I wanted. Not on a regular basis mind you. Usually when my computer broke under extended warranty. (The last time that happened was right during the Vista upgrade. They wanted to unload the last XP computer on me even though it had 1 stinking USB port. They claimed the OS upgrade made the others excluded because they weren't "materially the same" or something. I talked them round and round discussing how taking a hit on the number of USB ports was not "of equal performance" until they decided I could just have the value of that computer towards another. Normally that would be a screw job, but it was a Sony, which are overpriced, so I walked out with a much nicer HP for no extra cost. They hadn't considered that part.)

Still with you on that, and I think that our Social Security system needs serious reform, but F*ck em. That extra $100 a month is worth paying if it makes people see that if they want services from the government, they'll eventually have to pay for them and that they won't always be prepared to pay as the government not only tends to lie to citizens but allows citizens to lie to themselves.

Meh, I built my own this time a round.
For Laptops, I could usually find a decent Best Buy deal. And being young and in college at the time the ability to put it on an 18 month same as cash plan was nice.
Also, I made sure I got the use out of their extended protection plans. I always got at least one battery and made sure to take it in for any problems I had to the point that it eventually qualified for a replacement within 3 years. (Well did that for my mine and my mom's by my second one I was done with laptops, and didn't care to go through the trouble.)

Proving that I'm a) nuts, b) a geek, or c) both, I've actually gamed this out, some. Basically, the Texas Federation would start (as in: almost simultaneously) with TX, LA, OK, AR and maybe MS. From there, it wouldn't be long before AL and FL would petition to join, and possibly CO, NM, AZ, and UT. Not long after that, we get basically the rest of the South.
With the resulting energy resources, shipping lanes, military installations, etc., we'd be an economic powerhouse in no time.

Yeah, I wouldn't bank much on the tourism angle from MS. Other than Vicksburg and Natchez, there's just not much there. That blues trail thing is a complete waste of time and money (yours and the fed's andstate's (yours x2)).
It's a great source for ag and labor though. It would be a wonderful experiment for private education though since the public education system is a case study for Massive Fail.

I didn't go all the way with that scenario.
By the time the whole thing is done, you end up with essentially everything east of CA/WA/OR and a corner cut out for the NE States. Basically, look at the electoral map- if it's Red, it would end up in the Federation. Some blues, too, and I think one or two Reds in the NE (if there even are any anymore) might get left out.

Ooof. I am sorry to hear that you're having trouble. I know it's not much, but a lot of marriage troubles come to a head this time of year, after visiting family stresses and all the spending tension around Christmas, even the ugly weather adds to depression and irritability...if you can hold on (by sheer will or counseling) til the spring, people often get more reasonable. It sounds silly, I know, but I've seen it happen.

We had that talk yesterday.
Personally, I think it's a great idea. Show people exactly how much money they need to set aside to pay all their taxes. Make them write a check for each amount, not just one check that is a blanket one for all tax liabilities. Make them physically write out different "Pay To The Order Of" fields to teach them how many fucking governmental departments have their hands down their pockets.
Here's my take on what will happen:
People will be too broke by the time the first statement comes to pay ANY of their taxes. Why? The same people will find themselves suddenly "rich" and will promptly blow most or all of it on the usual stupid shit, leaving nothing left to cover what they owe. What the govt will do then is to auto-garnish their wages to make sure they have enough to pay their taxes, and then we're right back to square one again.

I've been doing the exact same thing and come to much the same conclusions. I've taken FL out of the Federation column though, after Nov. 6th. Not sure we can get CO either but if we have CO surrounded (same with NM) it can happen.
Mainly I'm plotting my own escape from New Yorkistan so I don't end up in the conquered territories. I loved living in TX back in the 80s, and assuming there are any jobs left in my field when IT happens, I'll need top be near a seaport. Houston is looking best for me right now.

We'd have to collect the taxes monthly or quarterly, or maybe just attaching a bill where the pay stub is now. Otherwise we'd end up building a whole lot of debtors prisons and paying them with IOUs.
I kind of like the idea of a bill where your paystub is now (or just handed out by your employer if you get direct deposit). People absolutely would fall behind, and the feeling wouldn't be as harsh as a big-ass check once a year, but it would be a start.

Yeah I get that argument. But in my mind, the reason why SS has been unassailable as a program is for two basic reasons.
1. Everybody pays into it and so feels it is "their money"
2. Everybody (who lives long enough) draws from it.
If I can't get rid of it outright, then I want it to be what it really is, a welfare program. Not everybody gets it, and it is payed for using normal (not special set aside funding) funding. Decoupling the taxpayers feelings of entitlement to the program. Then maybe we can get rid of it someday. That along with a separate issue of flattening the tax rate. so that a far greater portion of the US has "skin in the game" to quote someone notable for giving reasons why taxes have to be raised.
As it stands it doesn't really matter. It is too late for all of that. SS and our tax system will bankrupt us and send us into collapse. So their is no long term solution to either problem that can be seriously entertained.

Well I should probably explain why I think almost certainly it is Kahn.
SPOILER
In the opening of the trailer the antagonist is recruiting. And he is doing so by promising a cure to some incurable ailment suffered by the daughter of his potential recruit, Kahn possesses the necessary genetic modification technology to cure almost any disease.
In the mid trailer Spock is seen trying to dormantize a volcano and gets stuck in it while it is erupting. Rather than be rescued he sites the violation to the prime directive of exposing Enterprise and states the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
In the final part the antagonist is monologging and states "You would do anything for your family" I take this as a double entandre not only referring to how he gains supporters but also to all the genetically altered humans who considered themselves brothers and sisters.

I had to drive through Illinois to get to Radish Family Christmas. It is a delusion to believe that incrementals like "one trillion less red over ten years" will defeat fifteen trillion in total red in the same period. It is also a delusion to believe that the folks who brought you $33b in 'savings' at the last debt ceiling debacle will accomplish anything but make diehard republicans weep into their beverage of choice as they realize this is what their leaders dub as "within our capabilities".

No one voted for Mitt cause they liked him. Those who voted for Mitt were hoping he'd have some creative solutions to the economic problems. Problem is, with each new security briefing, the more the guy found out, the less he wanted the job. Even mitt's competitive nature couldn't overcome his fear of the economic travesty we are facing. It's better to have someone in the WH who doesn't know what's going on so the fear factor is removed and they have the delusion that they can fix things. Plus the 50% plus on the public teet are calm, fat and happy. If they lost their goodies they might get cranky and cantankerous.
