Happy Friday.

The House will vote to increase borrowing authority for National Flood Insurance Program by $9.7 billion this morning, the first of two planned votes for "Sandy relief." A vote for another $51 billion is supposed to come before January 15, with that version apparently including most or all of the Senate's pork.

A first grader in Maryland was suspended for making a gun gesture with a finger, pointing it at a classmate, and saying "pow." I'm sure he's learned an important lesson about educators, or something.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Friday, January 04, 2013. On this day in 1965 in his SOTU address, LBJ first outlined his plans for his “Great Society” program. The major goals stated by LBJ were the elimination of poverty and racial injustice. As implemented the major goal was to create a huge new socialist government of spending and taxes, while drawing in black voters away from the Republican Party.

Well, they seceded in two areas, they did in fact create a huge new round of socialist programs thanks to a majority Democrat congress and they did draw in the black vote. But poverty is still with us and what racial injustice there was was local pockets and disappearing already in 1965. In doing so they destroyed black family life, education, and the inner city culture. But the liberals to this day think the program was successful and continue to launch new ones just like it.

5 Another case of green schadenboner. DE loaned them $21.5M to set up shop. Not only are they going to eat that but they also have to pay the electric bills for the now defunct Fisker Motors. So far they have been hit for $400,000 and still going. But before we laugh too much at DE, Obama gave them $529M in loans. The cars that were built were built in Finland. After the whole thing started stinking and Republicans made it an election issue the DOE halted payment of the loans. It is unknown how much they got before the halt. As I have said many times in the past, these “green” initiatives only make one thing, a market for subsidies, graft, and corruption. When the subsidies dry up so does the market.

I swear, even the SF/Fantasy is a women’s book. It is getting hard for a male to find a decent new book. Looking through the SF/Fantasy choices yesterday I came to the conclusion that SF/Fantasy was nothing more than soft vampire porn for women. What I call bodice rippers with fangs. Hey publishers, you are making a self-completing cycle. You claim that women buy most of the books, but when you only market to women how do suppose men are going to buy?

Another BS program that was billed as help for the average man when in fact it was an outright gift to real estate developers and cronies. It has really led to the destruction of the beach culture of the late 50s and 60s.

Before passage of that program Myrtle Beach had about 10,000 permanent residents. It is now a metro area with > 500,000 and it is overdeveloped.

All this shit did was put the tax payer hock to pay for storm damage in the billions when a hurricane comes through.

As for the flood insurance, if you look at some of the NJ areas where "homes" were destroyed what you really see is summer beach shacks that people insist on living in year round. Additionally, some of them were exactly at sea level with no sea wall to keep back a storm surge. It was not IF they would be flooded, it was WHEN.

48 Regarding building in a flood plain.

The town I grew up in had an area that would flood the houses yearly, at least. You could see that it was the lowest point around and after a heavy rain and because of the hardscape that was put in to build the area, the water has got to go somewhere, and this area was that somewhere. Eventually they got tired of reconstructing the area to try and keep it from flooding and turned it into a park/natural area.

51 Hey publishers, you are making a self-completing cycle. You claim that women buy most of the books, but when you only market to women how do suppose men are going to buy?

You could always buy OSP’s book, Vic. Or mine (hint, hint).

Anyway, thanks for the news, Gabe and Vic. Today’s movie story is actually a small history lesson, and concerns a man who called himself Eadweard Muybridge, but who was born Edward Muggeridge in England in 1830.

He discovered photography in his early ‘30s, ending up in California by 1866 and making a name for himself as a photographer of Yosemite Valley. Among his customers was the railroad magnate Leland Stanford, who, noting Muybridge’s talent for invention, asked him to help settle a bet: when a horse ran, did it ever have all four feet on the ground?

Muybridge devoted two years of his life to settling the question, finally arranging a series of cameras along a racetrack, each camera’s shutter triggered when the horse broke through a thin string. And Stanford won the bet; yes, a horse did have all four legs briefly off the ground as it ran.*

So Muybridge now had “a simple record of time and space, laid out in still pictures taken at what we might call split-second intervals,” in the words of film historian David Thomson. But what could he do with them? As it turned out, he could invent a sort of bastard father to the movies; a device called a zoopraxiscope. You’ve seen them; imagine a series of pictures pasted inside a cylinder, with little slots on the outside for you to look through. Spin the cylinder, and the pictures move.

Muybridge was fascinated by what he’d done, and continued photographing animals in motion. In the 1880s, he progressed to people, gaining himself a position at the University of Pennsylvania and using a camera that was able to record up to 24 sequential pictures in a second. He shot anything that interested him – dogs walking, a horse and carriage, juggling acts, fencers in combat – but especially nude studies, showing the movement of skin and muscle.

Muybridge wasn’t the father of movies; the invention has no one father. But he was one of the many John the Baptists preparing the way.

At http://tinyurl.com/3dd8rnw, you can see the Stanford horse pictures. A visit to http://tinyurl.com/afufswh will show you some of Muybridge’s “Animal Locomotion” studies.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

*incidentally, Stanford had promised to share his winnings with Muybridge. He didn’t.

I don't know whether Bachmann voted or not, but voting "present" or declining to vote would have helped Boehner. He only needed a majority of votes cast for a Speaker. Which means that every time someone voted present or declined to vote, they reduced the total number of votes that he would have to receive.

He didn't have to get 218 votes, as has been erroneously reported almost everywhere. He had to get somewhat less because of absent members, members voting present, and members declining to vote. He had about a 20-vote cushion.

77 I swear, even the SF/Fantasy is a women’s book. It is getting hard for a male to find a decent new book.

I know I keep flogging (heh) this series but try the Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne. It's urban fantasy to the extent that it's set in modern times and is about the last remaining druid but it's definitely not soft core porn. Don't get me wrong, there's sex in the books, particularly the first one, but it's of the fade to black type. Quick, fun reads with a very long term story arc that's just starting to become the main focus.

I read a lot, I mean a lot, of YA crap. It is nearly impossible to find anything that has a male protagonist. You want to know why teen boys don't read? Other than classic sci fi, there's nothing out there for them to read.

79 Blacks currently hold no higher elected office than Congressional Representative.

When Harold Ford wanted to challenge Nancy Pelosi for the Speakership, he was told to sit down and shut up. He is no longer in Congress.

When Paul Wellstone was killed in a plane crash, the popular Alan Page, former NFL star and Minnesota Supreme court justice offered to run in his place. Minnesota dems said "No" and ran fossilized Walter Mondale, who lost.

When the DNC was in disarray after Gore's loss in 2001, former mayor of Atlanta tried for DNC Chairman. Bill Clinton brought in retread Terry McAuliffe who got the job.

When Carl McCall was running for governor of New York, Terry McAuliffe refused to give him his rightful share of DNC campaign money or support, instead directing it all to Florida in an ill-considered effort to defeat Jeb Bush.

ALL of these men could have had prominent roles in the leadership of the democrat party. Every single one was not only denied the chance to try, but publicly humiliated in the process.

All were black candidates and the message seems to be that as long as you are on the plantation and don't want to run things, we will happily take your votes. But don't get too uppity, as the white democrats are going to run things.

So shut up, Jordan, you don't know what you are talking about.

85 The Democrat party is the party of slavery today as it was in the past.

Their tool today is confiscatory taxation and onerous regulation that for all intents and purposes shackles us to the Government.

The GOP has nothing to offer black people per-se as we do not make direct racial or ethnic overtures to any race, creed or color of people as the Democrats do.

Witness Joe Bidens quip of "they're gonna put y'all in chains!"

How so?

The GOP is the party of individual liberty.

We want you to keep more of your money - That's economic freedom
We want parents to have school choice - That's educational freedom.
We want to eliminate onerous regulation - That's entrepreneruial freedom

on and on.

The Democrat party is the party of genocide(abortion)
The Democrat party is the party of slavery(Taxation)
The Democrat Party is the party of racism(Affirmative Action)

The Democrat party in every Orwellian word they utter and in every Marxist deed they attempt to implement are enemies of not only this country but freedom loving people everywhere.

Tasxes=Revenues leads to slavery
Social Programs=Great Society leads to dependence.

We must fight them with every fiber of out being!

It's about time we start getting real, and drop all the symbolism, shiny stuff and squirrels. If Bachmann -- or anyone else -- really opposed weepy eunuch Boner, they should have friggin' said so.

I won't say politics as usual has gotten us into the mess we are currently doing nothing about, but it hasn't hurt Choom Boy at all. When even a pansy-ass sniveler like the Traitor-in-Chief can walk over the so-called opposition in Congress with impunity, something is horribly wrong?

112 RE: Chicago Democrats and African-Americans

Look at the representation of Jesse Jackson Jr. His district is pretty much completely African-American. JJJr. took over from Mel Reynolds, a convicted child molester. Great representation there, huh? Now, JJJr. is under threat of federal indictment for misusing campaign funds, he was in medical treatment for most of last year, even to the point where a lot of people wanted someone else to run for his seat since he was AWOL and not serving the people (but the machine shut that down and he got reelected). But now that the federal charges are coming due, Mel Reynolds is back in the news trying to get his old seat back under the slogan, "Redemption". The Democrat machine insists that a black person run for that seat. How is this not racial manipulation?

The rules for electing the SOH are different from electing a politician in a general election.

The House elects its Speaker when one candidate has the votes of a
majority of the entire membership of the House (at least 218 Members).

Note someone said it was 214 this time so some positions must be vacant. Unlike a general election the SOH must get a minimum number of votes to be elected. So a "non-vote" is technically the same as a no vote.

But since she changed her vote to yes, then the point is moot anyway.

Posted by: AuthorLMendez, El Patron at January 04, 2013 08:14 AM (yAor6)

166 Note someone said it was 214 this time so some positions must be vacant. Unlike a general election the SOH must get a minimum number of votes to be elected. So a "non-vote" is technically the same as a no vote.

Again, this is incorrect, as I explained above. A "non-vote" reduces the number of votes a candidate needs to become Speaker. See here, (PDF) http://goo.gl/Qg219.

"To be elected, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of all the votes cast for individuals.

This number may be less than a majority (now 218 ) of the full membership of the House, because of vacancies, absentees, or members voting 'present.'"

If you want to win things, it's important to know the rules. It may have been 214 baseline because of absent members, but every time a member voted present, the number of necessary votes to reach a majority dropped. Thus, a vote "present" would have helped Boehner.

I view them as tyrants in word and deed and an evil force in this world!

They are evil and must be fought with every fiber of our being!

A party that supports abortion are evil.

A party that wants to strip me of my unalienable rights is evil!

A party who wants to confiscate the spoils of my labor is evil!

A party who pushes programs under the guise of improving certain groups lot in life but are truly intended to shackle them to government is evil.

Posted by: Gabriel Malor at January 04, 2013 08:15 AM (w0a3q)

I don't think that is correct. A vote of "present" is still a vote cast and according to House rules a candidate MUST have a majority of the votes cast.
Reference this from the House Rules
In two instances the House agreed to choose and subsequently did
choose a Speaker by a plurality of votes but confirmed the choice by
majority vote. In 1849 the House had been in session 19 days without
being able to elect a Speaker, no candidate having received a majority
of the votes cast. The voting was viva voce, each Member responding to
the call of the roll by naming the candidate for whom he voted.
Finally, after the fifty-ninth ballot, the House adopted a resolution
declaring that a Speaker could be elected by a plurality.

If they could be elected like what you said they would not have had to do that.

But, all of this is moot anyway.

218 I just read the description for the first book in that series and it says it included two short stories and it is 300 pp long.

They're novels though there's usually a short story at the end of the book as well. They're not long books, I'd say 250-300 pages in paperback and are quick reads.

Hearne is playing in an American Gods type 'verse in which gods exist because people believe in them. Personally, I like the fact that Hearne is hauling in mythology from everywhere but I can see some people having issues with treating Jesus as just another god that was created through mass belief.

Like I said, these are fun reads and I like a more breezy take on the whole paranormal urban fantasy genre. Plus there are vampires in this but these vampires are badass.

246 Dave, I have a couple. I drag out an old Dillonprogressive for mass production occasionally, but tend to make small batches on a single stage trying new setups more often. The turret presses sort of get gapped. If I'm going to make a bunch of a setup I just go all the way progressive.

If Biden starts going after guns and proves go nuts I may reduce the inventory for some cash.

Ann Coulter, love her or hate her, and BTW she went on an epic pro gun rant on Hannity last night, Quoted a study in her book Guilty. 327 In the opinion of top Democrats (and laugh at him or not, Joe Biden is one) electoral victory and defeat and the future of American politics are about race.

http://tinyurl.com/b6grgkj

"Have you ever seen a time when Republicans have had a more rapid epiphany about immigration than they have this last election?" Biden said Thursday while speaking at an event for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in Washington.

"It's finally happened," Biden said. "The American people have begun to understand not only the great contributions made, but the awesome potential, future potential of the Hispanic community."

"You're the center of this nation's future," he later added.

The vice president, who has not squashed speculation that he may run for president in 2016, stressed that in order "to make sure there is no going back," Hispanics should tell Republicans "that if you ignore the needs and concerns of the Hispanic people, you will not win. You will not win."

-

I'll bold that in case anyone missed it.

"You're the center of this nation's future," he later added.

Too bad for the whites, also known as "bitter clingers," who in this strategy are necessarily displaced as the core of America's national identity.

Giving way on this is suicide for Republicans, as Hispanics are Democrats, not only in terms of race and identity politics, but simply in terms of preferring more (and more leftist) government. If Hispanics are central to America, so is left-wing politics, while right wing politics is necessarily marginalized along with the only people willing to vote for it in large numbers.

But the Republican Party wants non-white votes for preference, and has for a long time been moving away from the white base it needs to survive, and is letting that base be swamped by mass immigration, and ground down by hostile legislation such as affirmative action, and by a hostile big media that the Republican elite refuses to take on.

This is the central contradiction in American politics.

333 Just talked to my congressman's office. Louie Gohmert voted for Allen West. Since the speaker can't be Allen West, he was showing his displeasure with Boehner. I trust 2 people in DC, Rep. Gohmert and Sen. Ted Cruz. They are the Tea Party picks. Now, Cornyn needs to be replaced by Pastor Stephen Broden.

334 From Instapundit, who everyone should read, but it needs to be said again anyway:

Repeal the Hollywood tax cuts!

http://tinyurl.com/bbok3b3

Tax deal is a victory for Hollywood cronyism

"The sordid details of the fiscal cliff bill are more difficult to ignore. Once again the “only donor base” that “has no quid pro quo” saw its quo multiply nicely. The tax break that allows film and television studios to expense millions of dollars if they operate within the United States costs around $300 million a year. It was set to expire at the end of 2012. However, the efforts of Chris Dodd at the Motion Picture Association of America and of other Hollywood minions ensured that American taxpayers would provide this subsidy to Katzenberg and Spielberg and Clooney and company for at least another two years."

Giving way on culture means giving way on politics and everything around it.

The Republican Party needs to change its mind about its habit of surrendering to big media on every level.

337 Ann Coulter, love her or hate her, and BTW she went
on an epic pro gun rant on Hannity last night, Quoted a study in her
book Guilty. The study states that if you took all the children of
single parent families out of the prison system, the demographic that
remains would mirror that of the country. If you think about it, that is
one powerful study.

I'm sure that's correct. The nags hate studies like that because it blows apart their horseshit dogma that men are useless piles of shit, which is more a reflection of the fucking trash heaps with which they voluntarily associated and subsequently got the shit beat out of them. Somehow their magic 8 ball never reads "You made a dumbfuck choice" because they're the really really smart ones.

342 Meh.

"Sportsman" is the lefty moby meme du jour.

Notice that dumbass bomb-maker used it. the word must've gone out that this will make Conservatives all tingly inside and give their incoherent ramblings credibility.

343 The flood insurance scheme is a blank cheque that is just going to get bigger and bigger. Sooner or later people are going to have to cut their losses and rebuild their houses somewhere where they won't get flooded. There's a reason why insurance companies won't insure these properties, they're doomed.

Hi Jordan,
I've got an easy request for you. Take a picture of your Kimber .45 and your Lee Enfield 303. Put a little piece of paper that says "Ace of Spades, Jordan, 1/4/2013" next to the guns in the picture. Since you have "all of them" I'm sure this will be easy. You can upload the picture to ___ur or twitpic or something.
If you really want to be impressive, you can add a picture of your Harvard student id with the identifying info cropped out. Same deal with the piece of paper next to it.
I'm 100% certain you'll never do this.

Is this what you meant?

http://tinyurl.com/b5nfq3a

"The Republican Study Committee, a caucus of Republicans in the House of Representatives, has told staffer Derek Khanna that he will be out of a job when Congress re-convenes in January. The incoming chairman of the RSC, Steve Scalise (R-LA) was approached by several Republican members of Congress who were upset about a memo Khanna wrote advocating reform of copyright law."

Because it's the sort of thing I meant.

"Conservative" politicians fire who they're told to, despise who they're told to and sell out who they're told to by the liberal mass media. When the liberal mass media told George H.W. Bush that raising taxes was the right thing to do and that - oh no! - nobody would use it against him if he broke his "no new taxes" pledge, he believed them. Inevitable defeat followed.

"Conservative" politicians have to identify the liberal mass media as an enemy to be opposed, not an oracle to be obeyed. The path they are on has no future.
