Texas: Everyone Here Probably Owns a Gun, Is Carrying One, or Is Thinking About It
Bryan Preston points out that in Texas gun laws are remarkable simple - just like they used to be across the US - as this excerpt from a TX gun laws FAQ demonstrates:
Q: How long is the waiting period to buy a Handgun / Shotgun / Rifle in Texas?A: There is no waiting period for purchasing a firearm in the state of Texas.
Q: I just moved to Texas, do I have to register my firearms?
A: No, there is no state registration of firearms.
Q: I just inherited / bought a gun from someone in Texas, do I need to transfer the gun to my name?
A: No, there is no state registration of firearms, thus there is no requirement transfer the firearm in your name.

Q: Can I carry a firearm in my vehicle?
A: Yes. With the passage of the Motorist Protection Act you may now readily carry handguns, loaded and within reach, so long as you conceal the firearm. Long guns (rifles / shotguns) do not have to be concealed and may be loaded and within reach.
Q: Are machine guns / suppressors / short-barreled firearms, etc. legal in the state of Texas?
A: Yes. All NFA rules apply. See this FAQ for more info regarding Class III / Title II items.
Q: Are "assault weapons" banned in Texas?
A: No. Texas abides by Federal law which at this time has no restrictions on so-called "assault weapons" such as semi-auto AR15, FAL, G3 / HK91 rifles.
Q: Is there a limit on the number of rounds a magazine may hold?
A: No. The only limit on magazines in Texas is the number of rounds you are physically able to cram into the thing and/or carry and/or afford.

Henrietta Lacks' Immortal Cells
I was just thinking last week that you rarely ever hear about HeLa cells anymore in the popular culture. But they're still being used daily in the ongoing fight against cancer.
Lacks was an impoverished black woman who died on October 4, 1951 of cervical cancer at just 31 years old. During her cancer treatment, a doctor at Johns Hopkins took a sample of her tumor without her knowledge or consent and sent it over to a colleague of his, Dr. George Gey, who had been trying for 20 years, unsuccessfully, to grow human tissues from cultures. A lab assistant there, Mary Kubicek, discovered that Henrietta's cells, unlike normal human cells, could live and replicate outside the body.
Go to just about any cell culture lab in the world and you'll find billions of HeLa cells stored there. In contrast to normal human cells, which will die after a few replications, Lacks' cells can live and replicate just fine outside of the human body (which is also unique among humans). Give her cells the nutrients they need to survive, and they will apparently live and replicate along forever, almost 60 years and counting since the first culture was taken. They can be frozen for literally decades and, when thawed, they'll go right on replicating.

The National Newspapers of Ireland has adopted a new policy. Any website which links to one of the 15 NNI member newspapers will have to pay a minimum of 300 Euros, with the license fee going up if you post more links. Note that this is not a fee to post an excerpt or some punitive measure for the copying of an entire article. No, the NNI wants to charge for links alone.

A CO state senator has introduced a bill mandating magazines no bigger than 10 rounds. Her rationale- and this was how it was reported on the news- was that the smaller magazine would force mass killers to reload more often, giving victims the chance to run away or maybe even tackle and subdue the shooter
SO- 'let's not shoot back, but if we can inconvenience the killer in some way, we might just have a chance

What a foul night here--the temp is 12 degrees--not that objectionable by itself--but the constant wind blowing between 16 and 20 mph really stinks. Threw spastic lab outside and she came RIGHT back in.

One huge advantage of kittehs-- they don't have to "go for a walk" outside in the winter. It's 23F here and my kittehs are sitting on the window seat at the moment looking at the guy next door trying to walk his dogs-- I don't know whether they feel sorry for the dogs (and the guy) or content to be members of a superior species.

EATING BLACK EYED PEAS ON NEW YEAR'S DAY - THE HISTORYIf
you grew up in the south or southwestern parts of this country, then
you can relate. I grew up with this belief, but did not know the real
reason. My mother always served black eyed peas on New Year's Day, and
she said it would bring good luck in the New Year. I've carried this
tradition forward, but never knew the reason behind it. It became a way
of remembrance of my mother and grandmother. Black Eyed Peas "The Real
Story," is much more interesting and has gone untold in fear that
feelings would be hurt. It’s a story of war, the most brutal and bloody
war in US history. Military might and power pushed upon civilians,
women, children and elderly. Never seen as a war crime, this was the
policy of the greatest nation on earth trying to maintain that status at
all costs. An
unhealed wound remains in the hearts of some people of the southern
states even today; on the other hand, the policy of slavery has been an
open wound that has also been slow to heal but is okay to talk about.
The story of *THE BLACK EYED PEA* being considered good luck relates
directly back to Sherman's Bloody March to the Sea in late 1864. It was
called The Savannah Campaign and was lead by Major General William T.
Sherman. The Civil War campaign began on Nov. 15, 1864, when Sherman's'
troops marched from the captured city of Atlanta, Georgia and ended at
the port of Savannah on 12/22/1864. When the smoke cleared, the
southerners who had survived the onslaught came out of hiding. They
found that the blue-belly aggressors had looted and stolen everything of
value, and everything you could eat, including all livestock. Death
and destruction were everywhere. While in hiding, few had enough to
eat, and starvation was now upon the survivors. There was no
international aid, no Red Cross meal trucks. The Northern army had
taken everything they could carry and eaten everything they could eat.
But they couldn’t take it all. The devastated people of the south found
for some unknown reason that Sherman's bloodthirsty troops had left
silos full of black eyed peas. At the time in the north, the lowly black
eyed pea was only used to feed stock. The northern troops saw it as the
thing of least value. Taking grain for their horses and livestock and
other crops to feed themselves, they just couldn’t take everything. So
they left the black eyed peas in great quantities, assuming it would be
of no use to the survivors, since all the livestock it could feed had
either been taken or eaten. Southerners awoke to face a new year in this
devastation and were facing massive starvation if not for the good luck
of having the black eyed peas to eat. From New Years Day 1866 forward,
the tradition grew to eat black eyed peas on New Year’s Day for good
luck.I will have my Black Eyed Peas this New Year's Day.

I'm starting to think if the NCAA decides to get real pissy may just tell the state of PA that if you don't like the NCAA rules that maybe Penn State just won't be a member of the NCAA anymore. May we suggest the NAIA or another organization that your athletic teams can compete in. I'm sure the Big10 will find another school to take your place.

I went through exactly the same situation a couple years ago, and as difficult as it was to watch my friend get ready to die, I appreciate all the time I got to spend with him. Be strong and be honest with your buddy, I told mine that I love him and that he was the brother I never had. While it sucks to watch your friend get ready to pass on...and I know this from experience...spending as much time as possible with him now is a really good thing and will make you a stronger man. DeGette introduced the proposal Thursday. The Democratic Congresswoman's district includes the site of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School. It is also adjacent to last year's Aurora movie theater shooting site. In both of those attacks, the shooters' rifles were modified with high-capacity magazines. In my home town in Pennsylvania, it's pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Day for good health and prosperity in the coming year. The local fire station used to host a huge New Years' pork and sauerkraut dinner as a fundraiser to maintain/upgrade their trucks. A worthy cause, and the meal was always delicious. Firehouse cooking is special (full disclosure-- I have a cousin who's a volunteer firefighter).

I'm liking my Springfield XD-S in .45 ACP. If you need something compact its not that bad. Would prefer to shoot the 1911 for fun though. I had an XD .40 SW before that ($%^^ truck thievin bastages). It was ok, but I like the XD-S better. Neither really kick all the much to me. My only complaint has been the magazine release takes a little more force than it should, especially when new. If you get either one of those, you prolly want the extended clip on it. Makes a little easier to control to have some extra room on the grip.

That's the most bizarre football play I've ever heard of. It wouldn't occur to me to pick up a blocked extra point attempt, much less lateral it to someone. I'm curious - suppose this worked, and it got returned 105 yards to the other end zone. Would that be a 6pt td, or just a 2pt extra?

Moved out of NYC to the wonderful state of Texas after losing my job and my dignity. Started seeing a therapist here for depression and anxiety.
He just suggested that I go to the shooting range as a healthy activity to get my mind off things.

Well we go from Desert in the west, to Bayou in the east. So humid you get your pick, hot on the other hand.. Its why we go batshit crazy when it snows here. If you ever see it freeze or snow, get off the road for your own sake, and I mean WAY off. You can prolly drive on it, those other nuts on the road with ya cant.

The capital was gorgeous, really makes DC look like the shitstain that it is. I could even waltz into the governor's office and the Texan Supreme Court room like it was my home. I'm guessing they don't worry about security as much because even the squirrels on the grounds there are packing heat.
It's a nice looking city but it definitely has the "weird" vibe that they wear like a badge of honor.

Interesting take. The metroplex (where I work) is the least like the Texas I where I was raised, know and love. I'm guessing we're up to about 20% Cali transplants- estimate based on rudeness and general highway assholery.
When my boss asked me if I wanted to return to Texas after five years away, he said the new office would be in Dallas. I told that Dallas is not really Texas, but at least it is only a short drive.
Still love Austin and points west, so your apparent disappointment in that fine city (even accounting for the Travis county crazies) is also intersting.

Dallas, I know what you mean by the highways. Those highways though are incredible, at least coming from a New York driver. They have all that land to work with, so you got some crazy sprawl of roads, highways and buildings between Dallas and Fort Worth.
I also noticed nobody would let me into their lane. I mean, NOBODY. Just like New York.
But they also all drove the same speed, so driving was a lot less stressful than NY, where people like to drive 90MPH in a 35 MPH zone and yet the same drivers also go 35MPH on parkways and the interstate. Go figure.

Glocks aren't for everyone, and the G-36 has a well deserved rep for FTF/FTE but a 15# spring fixed all the problems with my Gen 2. From what I understand Glock quietly fixed the problem on the Gen3/4 guns.

I didn't see every business rebuilt on Ventura Blvd after the Northridge quake until around 1998. There are still businesses that haven't been rebuilt from the 2007 fires in San Diego.
But Fat Man's numbers are up in NJ right now, and the biggest newspapers are talking about the DISGRACE that "their" money hasn't gotten to them within 2 months.
North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana haven't gotten immediate full funding right after a major storm either. Katrina doesn't count since a good chunk of that was welfare for displaced baby mamas.

Yes, Texas has a lot of Hispanics...and it always has. It's as much a part of the culture as oil and cattle. Most every family, including my own, has a few Hispanic branches.
A blended culture is part of what gives Texas it's rugged individuality. And coming from Austin, panhandling capitol of the world, I can tell you that I've never once seen a Mexican beggar.

Thank you for your advice about our drive to Spokane for Christmas. We ended up just going up 25 until it turned into 90 and to Spokane, both up and back, and had good driving except hit snow in Albuquerque on the way home.
Mighty cold up there driving through - especially in Wyoming leaving Sheridan. I sure do like the Couer d'Alene area of Idaho.

I live in New Mexico. We have wild fires, and sometimes blizzards. We do not have hurricanes, nor earthquakes. Why do I have to pay Federal taxes to help people that live in areas that have hurricanes and earthquakes? I am tired of paying for people who do not bother to pay insurance for natural disasters expecting me to pay for their issues.

Beemer drivers do seem to hold the highest percentage of raging assholes, the ones who ride up the shoulder of the freeway at rush hour because their time is just so much more important than yours.
It must be that way in the UK too because Top Gear loves to mock the typical BMW driver even though they tend to love the cars themselves.
BMW has outsold Mercedes for two years running now, and they got pretty good sales numbers for December.
