| Overnight Open Thread (1-3-2013)Texas: Everyone Here Probably Owns a Gun, Is Carrying One, or Is Thinking About It Bryan Preston points out that in Texas gun laws are remarkable simple - just like they used to be across the US - as this excerpt from a TX gun laws FAQ demonstrates: Q: How long is the waiting period to buy a Handgun / Shotgun / Rifle in Texas?
Every picture contains at least one kritter. Adam Carolla Remembers Andrew Breitbart This is from his podcast with Andrew last year and also has his thoughts on Andrew the day after his death. Plus he explains his theory on why the NRA never gives an inch on any policy and why that's smart. Almost certainly belonged to John Alden, the first Pilgrim to step foot in America. This .50-caliber wheellock musket, propularly known as the Mayflower Gun, is thought to be the only surviving firearm among those that crossed the Atlantic with the Pilgrims. It has been traced back to John Alden, traditionally the first Pilgrim to step ashore at Plymouth. Henrietta Lacks' Immortal Cells I was just thinking last week that you rarely ever hear about HeLa cells anymore in the popular culture. But they're still being used daily in the ongoing fight against cancer. Lacks was an impoverished black woman who died on October 4, 1951 of cervical cancer at just 31 years old. During her cancer treatment, a doctor at Johns Hopkins took a sample of her tumor without her knowledge or consent and sent it over to a colleague of his, Dr. George Gey, who had been trying for 20 years, unsuccessfully, to grow human tissues from cultures. A lab assistant there, Mary Kubicek, discovered that Henrietta's cells, unlike normal human cells, could live and replicate outside the body. Irish Newspapers Demand 300 Euro Per Link Not for an excerpt - just for linking to one of their public web pages. The National Newspapers of Ireland has adopted a new policy. Any website which links to one of the 15 NNI member newspapers will have to pay a minimum of 300 Euros, with the license fee going up if you post more links. Note that this is not a fee to post an excerpt or some punitive measure for the copying of an entire article. No, the NNI wants to charge for links alone. Good luck with that business model. Because taxes. French icon Gerard Depardieu just ditched his homeland to become a Russian citizen to avoid high taxes ... and the controversial move had to be approved by none other than Vladimir Putin. But then Putin also has a nasty habit of throwing people in jail and confiscating their assets when they displease him. The “U.S. treasury bonds” with a face value of $5 billion seized by Income-Tax officials from a businessman in Tirupur district are most likely fake since the U.S. Treasury Department has largely dispensed with issuing paper T-bills and has certainly not issued any with a denomination as high as $1 billion. Indeed, in February 2012, after police in Italy seized fake U.S. bonds worth a whopping six trillion dollars, American officials told the media the U.S. does not sell a $1-billion treasury bond.

GUN CONTROL news from Colorado:
A CO state senator has introduced a bill mandating magazines no bigger than 10 rounds. Her rationale- and this was how it was reported on the news- was that the smaller magazine would force mass killers to reload more often, giving victims the chance to run away or maybe even tackle and subdue the shooter SO- 'let's not shoot back, but if we can inconvenience the killer in some way, we might just have a chance Posted by: Jones in CO at January 03, 2013 10:04 PM (8sCoq) 3

Earlier I discussed Yankees, etc and I did not mean to offend anyone, but those that do not live in the South do not understand the occupation.
Here is just a sample of what we endured. EATING BLACK EYED PEAS ON NEW YEAR'S DAY - THE HISTORYIf you grew up in the south or southwestern parts of this country, then you can relate. I grew up with this belief, but did not know the real reason. My mother always served black eyed peas on New Year's Day, and she said it would bring good luck in the New Year. I've carried this tradition forward, but never knew the reason behind it. It became a way of remembrance of my mother and grandmother. Black Eyed Peas "The Real Story," is much more interesting and has gone untold in fear that feelings would be hurt. It’s a story of war, the most brutal and bloody war in US history. Military might and power pushed upon civilians, women, children and elderly. Never seen as a war crime, this was the policy of the greatest nation on earth trying to maintain that status at all costs. An unhealed wound remains in the hearts of some people of the southern states even today; on the other hand, the policy of slavery has been an open wound that has also been slow to heal but is okay to talk about. The story of *THE BLACK EYED PEA* being considered good luck relates directly back to Sherman's Bloody March to the Sea in late 1864. It was called The Savannah Campaign and was lead by Major General William T. Sherman. The Civil War campaign began on Nov. 15, 1864, when Sherman's' troops marched from the captured city of Atlanta, Georgia and ended at the port of Savannah on 12/22/1864. When the smoke cleared, the southerners who had survived the onslaught came out of hiding. They found that the blue-belly aggressors had looted and stolen everything of value, and everything you could eat, including all livestock. Death and destruction were everywhere. While in hiding, few had enough to eat, and starvation was now upon the survivors. There was no international aid, no Red Cross meal trucks. The Northern army had taken everything they could carry and eaten everything they could eat. But they couldn’t take it all. The devastated people of the south found for some unknown reason that Sherman's bloodthirsty troops had left silos full of black eyed peas. At the time in the north, the lowly black eyed pea was only used to feed stock. The northern troops saw it as the thing of least value. Taking grain for their horses and livestock and other crops to feed themselves, they just couldn’t take everything. So they left the black eyed peas in great quantities, assuming it would be of no use to the survivors, since all the livestock it could feed had either been taken or eaten. Southerners awoke to face a new year in this devastation and were facing massive starvation if not for the good luck of having the black eyed peas to eat. From New Years Day 1866 forward, the tradition grew to eat black eyed peas on New Year’s Day for good luck.I will have my Black Eyed Peas this New Year's Day. >Let me guess, Boulder of Denver? Gotta be a State Senator. I hate that my State has turned blue.
Posted by: Infidel at January 03, 2013 10:50 PM (bzOLE) DENVER (AP) - Colorado Congresswoman Diana DeGette is plunging into the gun control debate with new legislation to ban high-capacity magazines. DeGette introduced the proposal Thursday. The Democratic Congresswoman's district includes the site of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School. It is also adjacent to last year's Aurora movie theater shooting site. In both of those attacks, the shooters' rifles were modified with high-capacity magazines. Those devices allow attackers to fire dozens of bullets without pausing to reload. DeGette co-authored the bill with New York Democratic Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, whose husband was killed in a 1993 mass shooting on the Long Island Railroad. Gun control backers hope last month's Newtown massacre may lead to more action on firearms. But odds are against the magazine legislation passing the Republican-dominated House of Representatives. In my home town in Pennsylvania, it's pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Day for good health and prosperity in the coming year. My father has a gun in his safe that has the crest of the king of Spain, flintlock blunderbuss with bayonet, which was built in the 16th century, and probably was carried by a soldier travelling with Don Juan de Onate (conquistador extraordinaire). And they were here way before the Pilgrims. It was purchased at anold antique shop in El Paso Texas.

Would prefer to shoot the 1911 for fun though. I had an XD .40 SW before that ($%^^ truck thievin bastages). It was ok, but I like the XD-S better. Neither really kick all the much to me. My only complaint has been the magazine release takes a little more force than it should, especially when new. If you get either one of those, you prolly want the extended clip on it. It was purchased at anold antique shop in El Paso Texas.Posted by: alamogordo at January 03, 2013 10:59 PM (P21wY)No flintlocks prior to 1630. That's the most bizarre football play I've ever heard of. It wouldn't occur to me to pick up a blocked extra point attempt, much less lateral it to someone. I'm curious - suppose this worked, and it got returned 105 yards to the other end zone. Would that be a 6pt td, or just a 2pt extra? I do know you can return a missed field goal for a TD. Liberal, but nice. The capital was gorgeous, really makes DC look like the shitstain that it is. I could even waltz into the governor's office and the Texan Supreme Court room like it was my home. I'm guessing they don't worry about security as much because even the squirrels on the grounds there are packing heat. It's a nice looking city but it definitely has the "weird" vibe that they wear like a badge of honor. Love the idea of moving to texas but the couple of trips I've taken there were not pretty. Nice people and good food but depressing. One was to take my CWI test in Beaumont Texas in august hotter than hell, humid and the hotel smelled like swamp. The second was to inspect welds just outside Huston in December not cold in comparison to Minnesota but just dull and gray without the snow.

Texas gets the kind of ice where you carefully juuuust come to a stop, all proud of yourself, only to have the car start sliding sideways (no matter what you do), fetching up hard against the nearest obstacle.

Dallas/Fort Worth was awesome by the way.
Interesting take. The metroplex (where I work) is the least like the Texas I where I was raised, know and love. I'm guessing we're up to about 20% Cali transplants- estimate based on rudeness and general highway assholery. When my boss asked me if I wanted to return to Texas after five years away, he said the new office would be in Dallas. I told that Dallas is not really Texas, but at least it is only a short drive. Still love Austin and points west, so your apparent disappointment in that fine city (even accounting for the Travis county crazies) is also intersting. So what happened was a blocked PAT, that the player picked up in the field of play and tried to circle back thru the end zone and got tackled. That is ruled as a 1 point safety.

What kills me about all the hoopla on the withholding changes is that it in no way affects the amount you owe in taxes, just the proportion that gets taken out of your check. Before the holiday I had it set up so my withholding was as close as possible to what I owed, I stroked a $27 check to the Treasury that year. After they instituted the holiday I got a little extra up front but payed it all back at the end of the year in the from of a $200 to the IRS. Probably will have to do the same this year. Now that it has expired I'll be back in balance.

If you want to live in Austin Area, best if you live outside of Austin a ways, Hill country's nice. You can avoid most of the craziness, if you want to but visit it (some nice lookin women there). The Austin city council is kind of nuts, I'd avoid living in the city if at all possible. Hill Country land is a little higher than other property, and you're run into some Lola Granola types there, but in manageable numbers. North East and South of Austin are cheaper, but not as pretty in my opinion. Jobs arent that hard to come by, real estate hasn't gone down as much as other areas. North of Houston (far North if you can) isnt so bad. Real estate there was pretty affordable last I looked. Lived in Oklahoma and Texas all my life. Love em both. And yes I get a lot of crap for that.

Austin has a good structure and transit from what I could tell at least, some really nicely maintained city parks and a Mardia Gras type street (can't remember the name off hands). I think it was the gruff looking bearded guy who cycled past me wearing a bra before I walked into my hotel that kind of ruined it.
Did I mention it was a unicycle? Carnies must love it here, I'm thinking. Dallas, I know what you mean by the highways. Those highways though are incredible, at least coming from a New York driver. They have all that land to work with, so you got some crazy sprawl of roads, highways and buildings between Dallas and Fort Worth. I also noticed nobody would let me into their lane. I mean, NOBODY. Just like New York. But they also all drove the same speed, so driving was a lot less stressful than NY, where people like to drive 90MPH in a 35 MPH zone and yet the same drivers also go 35MPH on parkways and the interstate. Go figure. Posted by: Christina Hendricks's Mighty Jugs Would Look Right at Home in the Rockies at January 03, 2013 11:42 PM (+AV7H) 313

A Gun Control "Success" Story
Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary at Newtown, CT, calls for “gun control” have been many calls for new gun control. Amongst those calling for new restrictions on American’s fundamental 2nd Amendment Rights is a trio of “pro-gun Democrat U. S. Senators. Before they actually vote on any gun-related bills, perhaps they should learn a little lesson on the effectiveness of gun control. That's why I've been advising people consistently to avoid panic buying. NOONE knows what's gonna happen at this point...$20/1000 sure doesn't seem like much to lose to have the security of knowing you're stocked no matter what. Lessening risk has a price, and that's not very much. Freedom and USA still have pre-panic pricing within 10%, which is why I've been using and recommending them

Fat Man has been whining nonstop about how the Jersey Shore businesses have to be rebuilt NOW!
I didn't see every business rebuilt on Ventura Blvd after the Northridge quake until around 1998. There are still businesses that haven't been rebuilt from the 2007 fires in San Diego. But Fat Man's numbers are up in NJ right now, and the biggest newspapers are talking about the DISGRACE that "their" money hasn't gotten to them within 2 months. North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana haven't gotten immediate full funding right after a major storm either. Katrina doesn't count since a good chunk of that was welfare for displaced baby mamas. Its common for all Saudis who travel. They think once they leave Saudi Arabia Allah can't see them. Hence Bahrain has such a booming business with drunk Saudis. Then the overflow washes ashore in Europe. But once their jet enters Saudi air space, well they get all religious and Bedouin again. And they never realize if their deity was so powerful, then said deity can see what they do in the lands of the infidels. Tortured logic is normal for them. Almost forgot about one of Mississippi's crazy bombers in regards to the NYC Yuppie bombers. In the 1960s when the KKK went after Jews. Thomas Tarrants III was wounded and Kathy Ainsworth, school teacher, was killed in an FBI ambush in Meridian. While in prison Tarrants had a life changing conversion, renounced the KKK, was released after 8 years, was ordained a minister, and now resides in the belly of the Beast - Washington DC.

He is like Piers Morgan. Never held a firearm, never had to defend himself. Never had a black eye or given one. (except that lil girl he shoved). The only common point is the Choom gang, and i outgrew that 30 years ago. Hell. I voted for Reagan at least once in my life. WTF!!!! GROW UP NOW!!!!!!!

t-dubyah-d, well for me its local history. Old place I worked, I would sometimes drive past the Beth Israel synagog in Jackson. One of the places mentioned in the book. There is one book about the case from a LA Times writer called Terror in the Night. When the ambush went down, everyone was thrown for a loop when they found out who Tarrants' accomplice was - Kathy Ainsworth. Everyone who knew her thought she was the perfect Southern bell and for gosh sakes a school teacher. But there she was dead in Tarrants car in Meridian.

TFG does not deserve a theme song! Nothing should be dedicated to him, except if the MFM media decides they have been taken for the fools they are and dessert him!
Two term presidents have scandals, etc. Pres. Bush 43 was unfairly blamed for Katrina, we know it was not his call to overrule Nagin and Blanco. It was up to them to call for FEMA but they are as stupid as a dead animals. Feds can't overrule state rights. I can't wait until TFG's scandals are covered by the old media. Fast & Furious, Benghazi, now all the new regulations he has released (SCOAMT is appropriate, instead of SCOAMF now) The MFM is not thrilled with TFG because he does those Pimp with a Limp interview etc. I think in the 2014 they'll wake up and realize he is another Lame Dumb Duck president and might start to ak questions about his history. So I've been cruising around the internet, and found a quote that made me LOL: "Since 2009, both the stock market and the broad U.S. economy have been dependent on perpetual support from massive federal deficits and unprecedented money creation. Meanwhile, Wall Street is content to ignore the extent of this support, and looks on every movement of the economy as a sign of intrinsic health – which is a lot like admiring the graceful flight of a dead parrot swinging by a string from the ceiling fan." http://tinyurl.com/arha7zq Posted by: rickl at January 04, 2013 06:41 AM (sdi6R) 676
