Texas: Everyone Here Probably Owns a Gun, Is Carrying One, or Is Thinking About It

Bryan Preston points out that in Texas gun laws are remarkable simple - just like they used to be across the US - as this excerpt from a TX gun laws FAQ demonstrates:

Q: How long is the waiting period to buy a Handgun / Shotgun / Rifle in Texas?

A: There is no waiting period for purchasing a firearm in the state of Texas.

Q: I just moved to Texas, do I have to register my firearms?

A: No, there is no state registration of firearms.

Q: I just inherited / bought a gun from someone in Texas, do I need to transfer the gun to my name?

A: No, there is no state registration of firearms, thus there is no requirement transfer the firearm in your name.

...

Q: Can I carry a firearm in my vehicle?

A: Yes. With the passage of the Motorist Protection Act you may now readily carry handguns, loaded and within reach, so long as you conceal the firearm. Long guns (rifles / shotguns) do not have to be concealed and may be loaded and within reach.

Q: Are machine guns / suppressors / short-barreled firearms, etc. legal in the state of Texas?

A: Yes. All NFA rules apply. See this FAQ for more info regarding Class III / Title II items.

Q: Are "assault weapons" banned in Texas?

A: No. Texas abides by Federal law which at this time has no restrictions on so-called "assault weapons" such as semi-auto AR15, FAL, G3 / HK91 rifles.

Q: Is there a limit on the number of rounds a magazine may hold?

A: No. The only limit on magazines in Texas is the number of rounds you are physically able to cram into the thing and/or carry and/or afford.

Adam Carolla Remembers Andrew Breitbart

This is from his podcast with Andrew last year and also has his thoughts on Andrew the day after his death.

Plus he explains his theory on why the NRA never gives an inch on any policy and why that's smart.

The Oldest American Gun

Almost certainly belonged to John Alden, the first Pilgrim to step foot in America.

This .50-caliber wheellock musket, propularly known as the Mayflower Gun, is thought to be the only surviving firearm among those that crossed the Atlantic with the Pilgrims. It has been traced back to John Alden, traditionally the first Pilgrim to step ashore at Plymouth.

Henrietta Lacks' Immortal Cells

I was just thinking last week that you rarely ever hear about HeLa cells anymore in the popular culture. But they're still being used daily in the ongoing fight against cancer.

Lacks was an impoverished black woman who died on October 4, 1951 of cervical cancer at just 31 years old. During her cancer treatment, a doctor at Johns Hopkins took a sample of her tumor without her knowledge or consent and sent it over to a colleague of his, Dr. George Gey, who had been trying for 20 years, unsuccessfully, to grow human tissues from cultures. A lab assistant there, Mary Kubicek, discovered that Henrietta's cells, unlike normal human cells, could live and replicate outside the body.

Go to just about any cell culture lab in the world and you'll find billions of HeLa cells stored there. In contrast to normal human cells, which will die after a few replications, Lacks' cells can live and replicate just fine outside of the human body (which is also unique among humans). Give her cells the nutrients they need to survive, and they will apparently live and replicate along forever, almost 60 years and counting since the first culture was taken. They can be frozen for literally decades and, when thawed, they'll go right on replicating.

Irish Newspapers Demand 300 Euro Per Link

Not for an excerpt - just for linking to one of their public web pages.

The National Newspapers of Ireland has adopted a new policy. Any website which links to one of the 15 NNI member newspapers will have to pay a minimum of 300 Euros, with the license fee going up if you post more links. Note that this is not a fee to post an excerpt or some punitive measure for the copying of an entire article. No, the NNI wants to charge for links alone.

Good luck with that business model.

Gerard Depardieu Goes Russian

Because taxes.

French icon Gerard Depardieu just ditched his homeland to become a Russian citizen to avoid high taxes ... and the controversial move had to be approved by none other than Vladimir Putin.

Gerard has been outraged by the French president's attempt to bump up taxes on super-rich frenchies to 75%.

The "Green Card" star enacted Plan B -- applying for citizenship in Russia ... where they only have a flat income tax of 13%.

Gerard's request went up the chain at the Kremlin ... and today President Putin put his stamp on the request. No word on where Depardieu plans to live in Russia.
But then Putin also has a nasty habit of throwing people in jail and confiscating their assets when they displease him.

1 The “U.S. treasury bonds” with a face value of $5 billion seized by Income-Tax officials from a businessman in Tirupur district are most likely fake since the U.S. Treasury Department has largely dispensed with issuing paper T-bills and has certainly not issued any with a denomination as high as $1 billion. Indeed, in February 2012, after police in Italy seized fake U.S. bonds worth a whopping six trillion dollars, American officials told the media the U.S. does not sell a $1-billion treasury bond.

With QE, who could be sure, besides with the Treasury issuing more and more worthless dollars, who would notice

2 GUN CONTROL news from Colorado:

A CO state senator has introduced a bill mandating magazines no bigger than 10 rounds. 35 Earlier I discussed Yankees, etc and I did not mean to offend anyone, but those that do not live in the South do not understand the occupation.

Here is just a sample of what we endured.

EATING BLACK EYED PEAS ON NEW YEAR'S DAY - THE HISTORYIf
you grew up in the south or southwestern parts of this country, then
you can relate. I grew up with this belief, but did not know the real
reason. My mother always served black eyed peas on New Year's Day, and
she said it would bring good luck in the New Year. I've carried this
tradition forward, but never knew the reason behind it. It became a way
of remembrance of my mother and grandmother. Black Eyed Peas "The Real
Story," is much more interesting and has gone untold in fear that
feelings would be hurt. It’s a story of war, the most brutal and bloody
war in US history. Military might and power pushed upon civilians,
women, children and elderly. Never seen as a war crime, this was the
policy of the greatest nation on earth trying to maintain that status at
all costs. An
unhealed wound remains in the hearts of some people of the southern
states even today; on the other hand, the policy of slavery has been an
open wound that has also been slow to heal but is okay to talk about.
The story of *THE BLACK EYED PEA* being considered good luck relates
directly back to Sherman's Bloody March to the Sea in late 1864. It was
called The Savannah Campaign and was lead by Major General William T.
Sherman. The Civil War campaign began on Nov. 15, 1864, when Sherman's'
troops marched from the captured city of Atlanta, Georgia and ended at
the port of Savannah on 12/22/1864. When the smoke cleared, the
southerners who had survived the onslaught came out of hiding. They
found that the blue-belly aggressors had looted and stolen everything of
value, and everything you could eat, including all livestock. Death
and destruction were everywhere. While in hiding, few had enough to
eat, and starvation was now upon the survivors. There was no
international aid, no Red Cross meal trucks. The Northern army had
taken everything they could carry and eaten everything they could eat.
But they couldn’t take it all. The devastated people of the south found
for some unknown reason that Sherman's bloodthirsty troops had left
silos full of black eyed peas. At the time in the north, the lowly black
eyed pea was only used to feed stock. The northern troops saw it as the
thing of least value. Taking grain for their horses and livestock and
other crops to feed themselves, they just couldn’t take everything. So
they left the black eyed peas in great quantities, assuming it would be
of no use to the survivors, since all the livestock it could feed had
either been taken or eaten. Southerners awoke to face a new year in this
devastation and were facing massive starvation if not for the good luck
of having the black eyed peas to eat. From New Years Day 1866 forward,
the tradition grew to eat black eyed peas on New Year’s Day for good
luck.I will have my Black Eyed Peas this New Year's Day.

DENVER (AP) - Colorado Congresswoman Diana DeGette is plunging into the gun control debate with new legislation to ban high-capacity magazines.

DeGette introduced the proposal Thursday. The Democratic Congresswoman's district includes the site of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School. It is also adjacent to last year's Aurora movie theater shooting site. In both of those attacks, the shooters' rifles were modified with high-capacity magazines. Those devices allow attackers to fire dozens of bullets without pausing to reload.

DeGette co-authored the bill with New York Democratic Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, whose husband was killed in a 1993 mass shooting on the Long Island Railroad.

Gun control backers hope last month's Newtown massacre may lead to more action on firearms. But odds are against the magazine legislation passing the Republican-dominated House of Representatives.

In my home town in Pennsylvania, it's pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Day for good health and prosperity in the coming year. My last two trips to places that sell ammo, the shelves were bare, save a few boxes of .40 and maybe some .45ACP. They were even out of .44 Mag

.22LR still seems to be in supply, especially if you can shoot the hi-velocity rounds. The regular .22LR is starting to get scarce

167 I call bullshit on the oldest American gun. My father has a gun in his safe that has the crest of the king of Spain, flintlock blunderbuss with bayonet, which was built in the 16th century, and probably was carried by a soldier travelling with Don Juan de Onate (conquistador extraordinaire). And they were here way before the Pilgrims. It was purchased at anold antique shop in El Paso Texas.

If you get either one of those, you prolly want the extended clip on it. Makes a little easier to control to have some extra room on the grip.

Nothing makes it better, but, it does make it bearable. If you two are comfortable with it, give him a big hug. So many times, the dying have no one touching them because people are afraid of it. That's the most bizarre football play I've ever heard of. It wouldn't occur to me to pick up a blocked extra point attempt, much less lateral it to someone. I'm curious - suppose this worked, and it got returned 105 yards to the other end zone. Would that be a 6pt td, or just a 2pt extra?

I do know you can return a missed field goal for a TD.

Moved out of NYC to the wonderful state of Texas after losing my job and my dignity. Started seeing a therapist here for depression and anxiety.

He just suggested that I go to the shooting range as a healthy activity to get my mind off things.

Man - that is an "only in Texas" moment - "Yeah, my therapist suggested going and shooting off weapons."

Did I mention how much I love this place and everyone in it?

For some reason I had thought Texas had an arid climate, so while the heat would be bad I figured eh, at least it's a DRY heat. The humidity was an unwelcome surprise to say the least.

Dallas/Fort Worth was awesome by the way.

Austin was... was... seriously, did some genetic Walking Dead type plague hit that city or something?

Well we go from Desert in the west, to Bayou in the east. So humid you get your pick, hot on the other hand.. Its why we go batshit crazy when it snows here. When my boss asked me if I wanted to return to Texas after five years away, he said the new office would be in Dallas. I told that Dallas is not really Texas, but at least it is only a short drive.

283 What kills me about all the hoopla on the withholding changes is that it in no way affects the amount you owe in taxes, just the proportion that gets taken out of your check. Before the holiday I had it set up so my withholding was as close as possible to what I owed, I stroked a $27 check to the Treasury that year. After they instituted the holiday I got a little extra up front but payed it all back at the end of the year in the from of a $200 to the IRS. Probably will have to do the same this year. Now that it has expired I'll be back in balance.

You can avoid most of the craziness, if you want to but visit it (some nice lookin women there). The Austin city council is kind of nuts, I'd avoid living in the city if at all possible. Hill Country land is a little higher than other property, and you're run into some Lola Granola types there, but in manageable numbers. North East and South of Austin are cheaper, but not as pretty in my opinion. Jobs arent that hard to come by, real estate hasn't gone down as much as other areas. North of Houston (far North if you can) isnt so bad. Real estate there was pretty affordable last I looked. Lived in Oklahoma and Texas all my life. Love em both. 312 Austin has a good structure and transit from what I could tell at least, some really nicely maintained city parks and a Mardia Gras type street (can't remember the name off hands). I think it was the gruff looking bearded guy who cycled past me wearing a bra before I walked into my hotel that kind of ruined it.

Did I mention it was a unicycle?

Carnies must love it here, I'm thinking.

Dallas, I know what you mean by the highways. Those highways though are incredible, at least coming from a New York driver. They have all that land to work with, so you got some crazy sprawl of roads, highways and buildings between Dallas and Fort Worth.

I also noticed nobody would let me into their lane. I mean, NOBODY. Just like New York.

But they also all drove the same speed, so driving was a lot less stressful than NY, where people like to drive 90MPH in a 35 MPH zone and yet the same drivers also go 35MPH on parkways and the interstate. Go figure.

Grey Fox,
Dad looked it upin an old gun book, that stated that the mechanism was invented in Germany and patented in the 1500s, and Spain purchased the manufacturing rights to the patent and the gun was manufactured in Spain and used by the king's infantry.
However, he would love to learn more.
Pictures could be made available, if you have additional knowledge about these things.

Thank you if you do.

My point was that in November I encouraged everyone to buy the very same product when it was $319/1000 and now CTD had it at $999/1000. Damn that was pretty good advice y'all recieved for free.

Before they actually vote on any gun-related bills, perhaps they should learn a little lesson on the effectiveness of gun control.

NOONE knows what's gonna happen at this point...$20/1000 sure doesn't seem like much to lose to have the security of knowing you're stocked no matter what. Lessening risk has a price, and that's not very much. Freedom and USA still have pre-panic pricing within 10%, which is why I've been using and recommending them

Tornadoes blew through a couple of counties here in western Virginia last spring and the JEF told us that we will get no federal aid. McDonnell said fine, Virginia has a budget surplus now, we will take care of it.

Last summer when the "derecho" blew through here, we got shit.

As a matter of fact, Bruce, Bon Jovi, and the Stones have yet to play a benefit concert for us.
But I don't know why the people in the Sandy area need help because the media told me that the government's response was flawless and all services were restored immediately and that everyone was back in their homes.

Are you telling me that the media has lied to me?

I didn't see every business rebuilt on Ventura Blvd after the Northridge quake until around 1998. There are still businesses that haven't been rebuilt from the 2007 fires in San Diego.

But Fat Man's numbers are up in NJ right now, and the biggest newspapers are talking about the DISGRACE that "their" money hasn't gotten to them within 2 months.

North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana haven't gotten immediate full funding right after a major storm either. Katrina doesn't count since a good chunk of that was welfare for displaced baby mamas.

Anna Puma,

I live in New Mexico. We have wild fires, and sometimes blizzards. We do not have hurricanes, nor earthquakes. Why do I have to pay Federal taxes to help people that live in areas that have hurricanes and earthquakes? I am tired of paying for people who do not bother to pay insurance for natural disasters expecting me to pay for their issues.

I also agree with you about the people that do not rip out flooded building sheetrock etc.

Beemer drivers do seem to hold the highest percentage of raging assholes, the ones who ride up the shoulder of the freeway at rush hour because their time is just so much more important than yours.

It must be that way in the UK too because Top Gear loves to mock the typical BMW driver even though they tend to love the cars themselves.

BMW has outsold Mercedes for two years running now, and they got pretty good sales numbers for December.

Its common for all Saudis who travel. They think once they leave Saudi Arabia Allah can't see them. Hence Bahrain has such a booming business with drunk Saudis. Then the overflow washes ashore in Europe. But once their jet enters Saudi air space, well they get all religious and Bedouin again.

And they never realize if their deity was so powerful, then said deity can see what they do in the lands of the infidels. Tortured logic is normal for them.

636 TFG does not deserve a theme song! Nothing should be dedicated to him, except if the MFM media decides they have been taken for the fools they are and dessert him!
Two term presidents have scandals, etc. Pres. Bush 43 was unfairly blamed for Katrina, we know it was not his call to overrule Nagin and Blanco. It was up to them to call for FEMA but they are as stupid as a dead animals. Feds can't overrule state rights.

I can't wait until TFG's scandals are covered by the old media. Fast & Furious, Benghazi, now all the new regulations he has released (SCOAMT is appropriate, instead of SCOAMF now)

The MFM is not thrilled with TFG because he does those Pimp with a Limp interview etc. I think in the 2014 they'll wake up and realize he is another Lame Dumb Duck president and might start to ak questions about his history.

I don't know how to shoot a gun bout I wouldliek to move to TX when I can retired. It can't be wosew then 7 degrees here in MA Thursday am.

No worries, man. My last nic was "Jew Janitor's Mop Bucket" so I'm not sure that would've been any better. Nevertheless, I don't recall hearing the tunes you posted links to and I'm listening to them now.

648 @Chicago refugee.. When asked about guns I always lie. None of their biz!

I also tell them I don't smoke or drink.

Do you know why?

Anything they find is because of smoking or drinking.

Hangnail,..smoking!

Athlete's foot...drinking.

Bad fucking attitude and Obama hate..smoking and drinking!

I don't do drugs but back several decades ago when they started testing people for drugs I replied.."It will not be long before they are testing people for cigs (nicotine), and beer drinking and excluding fat people from coverage."

Those Union fucks laughed and said I was crazy.

Who is laughing now?

Insurance companies, they are like betting against yourself. Kill them all!

674 Doctors in China generally don't ask about guns in the home since it's verbotten here.

They do ask about how many Ho's you be fucking, and did you wear protection?

I hate this freaking country. I can't wait to come back to Texas.

I only work here to make money, so I don't have to scam the taxpayers with unemployment, a fake disability claim, welfare etc.

There are no jobs left in the US.

Posted by: Judge_Roy_bean at January 04, 2013 05:30 AM (U9j2s)

675 I woke up early and couldn't get back to sleep. I'm going to regret this at work.

So I've been cruising around the internet, and found a quote that made me LOL:

"Since 2009, both the stock market and the broad U.S. economy have been dependent on perpetual support from massive federal deficits and unprecedented money creation. Meanwhile, Wall Street is content to ignore the extent of this support, and looks on every movement of the economy as a sign of intrinsic health – which is a lot like admiring the graceful flight of a dead parrot swinging by a string from the ceiling fan."

678 I don't know anything about the stock market but I always figured that it wouldn't be anywhere near 13k if it wasn't chasing all the fake dollars that have been thrown at it.
I'm sure that's not the best way to describe it but you know what I mean.

683 But there *is* a waiting period in Texas to buy guns: the time you have to wait in line for the sales clerk to help you because he's helping all the other Texans buy a gun.
