Suprise: Employers Cutting Hours, Reducing Hiring to Avoid ObamaCare's Expensive Mandate

Well, in an economy this robust, I suppose we can afford to lose some employment.

About a quarter of businesses surveyed by consulting firm Mercer don’t offer health coverage to employees who work at least 30 hours a week. Half of them plan to make changes so fewer employees work that many hours. The health care law will particularly affect companies with 40 to 45 workers that plan to expand and hire. Many are holding off so they don’t cross the 50-employee threshold, says Christine Ippolito, principal at Compass Workforce Solutions, a human resource consulting firm in Melville, N.Y. Ernie Canadeo, president of EGC Group, a Melville-based advertising and marketing agency with 45 employees, planned to add 10 next year but now says he may add fewer so he’s not subject to the mandate…Others already over the 50-employee threshold plan to add more part-time workers or cut the hours of full-timers, says Rob Wilson, head of Employco, a human resource outsourcing firm. Many, he says, will hire more temporary workers, whom they won’t have to cover.

28 Definitely not a surprise. We started culling our herd about a year ago. Now we're finally under 50 and thus not subject to Obamacare. Separately we also converted several people from full to part-time, so as not to afford them any health coverage whatsoever. Even outside of Obamacare the reality is that health premium costs are skyrocketing. IOW our workforce has a worse package of health coverage post Obamacare than they did pre Obamcare. Elections and policies have serious real world consequences.

Posted by: Tsar Nicholas II at January 03, 2013 01:40 PM (pmsMR)

29 One of the non-policy related features of Obamacare is that the consequences of it can be blamed on third parties. The law results in rational thinkers making rational decisions: cut the hours. That decision hurtsemployees. But it is the evil employers who made the decision to do that; the government didn't force them to do it. Just like it won't force doctors to quit or insurance companies to go out of business or compel employers to get rid of those pesky "cadillac" health plans, etc. etc. etc. The evil capitalists did it.

39 HA. Not only that, if they offered health care it doesn't have to be "affordable".

“In a long-awaited interpretation of the new health care law, the
Obama administration said Monday that employers must offer health
insurance to employees and their children, but will not be subject to
any penalties if family coverage is unaffordable to workers.”

So under the Affordable Care Act, care doesn’t have to actually be, you know, affordable. Gotcha.

Of course employers were going to cut hours, no fucking shit. That's similar to how many businesses hover in the 35-45 employee range to avoid going over the magic 50 employee threshold. The costs of compliance are greater than the value added by the next employee. When that's the case, the next employee won't be hired.

We're back to the discussion about how for far too many people the point of a business is to provide a job and benefits, not to make money. How dare a business look at its bottom line! That's just evil!

What with my taxes and healthcare premiums going up, not to mention the rising costs of inflation--yes inflation--grocery shopping is where you see that happening, I told the nice man on the phone I wasn't in a position to contribute any money this year.
This year, I have sworn that I will only donate to charities that benefit the wounded military (Semper Fi Fund being my number one) and my tithing (church and missionaries I support). Everyone else is getting nothing from me. In addition to my alumni association, I havegiven regularly several times a yearto The Union Gospel Mission in Seattle, The American Heart Association, Medic 1, Salvation Army, American Diabetes Association, the USO, Girls on The Run, The Warm House Fund (in conjunction with my gas company), Northwest Harvest (local food bank), Keiro (a local Japanese nursing home where some of my relatives spent their last years), World Vision, Mercy Corps, Susan Komen, and other cancer organizations. No more. No more political donations either (that really turned out to be a bust this last election, and the Republicans suck, so there's that too!)
I look forward to every person who calls me trying to solicit money. I cannot wait to tell them why I am no longer contributing a penny to them. Elections have consequences, bitchez!

I'm so lucky that I was here until 9 last night fixing the mess you made and that I came in at 6 this morning to fix the mess that the rest of your department made and I'm so very lucky that I'm going to be here until 11 tonight, at least, because I have to spend the day doing trial prep that other people claim to be too stupid to do and then still do a full day's worth of my job and I'm so lucky that I will be here all weekend making it 19 days in a row I've worked at least 10 hours. So you're right, it's pure luck." She huffed out of my office and, sadly, I don't think she got the point.

When I left that job, I did pretty much go Galt and now have a job that pays less than half of what my old job paid. I also come in at 8 and leave at 5ish and magically no longer need my blood pressure meds. So I have an Impala instead of a BMW and have a small apartment in a nice place instead of a bigger one in the fancy place and so what if I have to think if I really want to buy that book instead of dropping $250 at Barnes and Noble without blinking. I might have a little life but it's mine and I don't hate it. That's worth more than stuff.

This is also the point about marginal rates. Those extra dollars I made were paid for in sometimes literal tears of rage and frustration. It wasn't worth it. Now that marginal dollars will be significantly impacted by taxes, it is truly not worth the stress. That's something I think many on the Left don't get. After a certain level, the trade off for more money is less time to enjoy life. Make that imbalance high enough and people will make the choice to accept more life for less money.

101 Obviously it's time to nationalize this vile collection of hoarders and wreckers. Then the President can force these corporations to hire people and make the economy better.

But they'll need a catchy slogan to sell it to the skeptics. You know, about how "work gives you freedom", or something like that. I'm sure this administration has some PR people of the proper mindset.

102 Of course, the Preezy and his Merry Band of Leftist Henchmen will simply create legislation requiring that anyone who operates as a business MUST have at least three full-time employees, who are NOT family members, and that those employees must have full health coverage. Anyone who doesn't have full time employees will be considered "self-employed" -- even if they have dozens ofpart-time employees and contractors -- and will be unable to draw unemployment benefits.

And if Congress balks at that, the Preezy will put it in an EO.

This bureaucratic commie bullshit is easy when you try.

In all seriousness, this is bullshit.

The young healthy people are lazy, broke and entitled. They will not pay for this shit if they could, and in reality they can't even. So bet your ass they won't.

Oh, rates will get jacked. But people aren't going to be paying them, they'll wind up on public assistance or filing for the free care.

As rhetoric, it's one thing. But in terms of reality, the idea that our children and the future generations are going to slave for years to pay off our debts, that is fucking ridiculous.

Gotcha.

178 I'd keep employment at your firm under 40, if I were you.

Those thousands of new IRS agents are going to be auditing firms, trying to prove retroactively that you "really" employed more than 50 people, setting you up for huge fines and penalties for not providing health insurance. Firms claiming to employ 45-49 people are going to have their books gone over with a fine tooth comb.

I'd keep a considerable margin of safety...

Here's a little tax no one has talked about. Here in PA (and I'm sure in many states) The state has increased the employers' UC tax to replenish the coffers because they have been depleted by the UC extensions.

Being an employer is not fun right now. How are we supposed to find that money when margins are near zero already. It's canalbilize time. Workforce must shrink and efficiencies must be found. So higher unemployment on its way. This is but one small factor. Add in another twenty or so similar taxes/regulations and we start talking unemployment over 10% and that's using their fictitios figures. U6 is going to be nearing 20%.

Obama can do and say anything, his arrogance has ascended higher than any past leader.

I think it is by design, so that when the deception is lifted and the American people truly see the filth and corruption of this regime they will be sickened. Remember something George Bush (the father) had over a 90% approval rating at the first Gulf War, but within a year he was defeated by a nothing hillbilly from Arkansas.

Bush was supposed to eliminate Saddam but did not, no matter his excuse, this was against the will of God and it is God that raises up and takes down. All at once all the scandals are going to be revealed and Obama will be hated by the American people, by a large majority, and the media will also be completely discredited. You touch on a point that i've been making for years. The US Constitution does not require equality of outcome in people's lives, but it DOES require equal protection under the law. As the Wealthy have always afforded the best lawyers, the poor have long suffered unequally under the law as a result.

O.J. Simpson walks, while every day less rich defendants get convicted on worse evidence. Of all the things demanding socialization, it is access to the legal system. ALL lawyers should work for the government at a set wage, and legal services should be available to anyone, and they should be equally bad for everyone!!!!

Socialize the legal system! It's the LAW!!!!!

After a certain level, the trade off for more money is less time to enjoy life. Make that imbalance high enough and people will make the choice to accept more life for less money.

The point would be to disarm us, of course, but making millions of right-of-center Americans instant tax evaders subject to arrest is a nice plus for them. Me, I'm not paying such a tax if such a tax is somehow imposed, which will almost certainly make me a felon or a fugitive, depending on how I respond should they come for me. Not a bad thing, I suppose. If you're not a felon or a fugitive while living under the yoke of an authoritarian tyranny, you're not doing it right.

(Reuters) - Private-sector employers shrugged off a looming budget
crisis and stepped up hiring in December, offering further evidence of
underlying strength in the economy as 2012 ended.
While other data on Thursday showed an increase in the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits, the trend remained consistent with steady job growth.

Comrades, there has never been temp hiring in December so all of the hires that month are good. And an increase in new unemployment claims equals steady job growth. Got it?

Total sales of both co-ops and condominiums jumped 40 percent in the
fourth quarter of 2012 year from the same period in 2011, according to a
new report from Brown Harris Stevens. The average co-op price of
$1,285,426 was 12 percent higher than a year ago, while three-bedroom
and larger co-ops saw a 34 percent price leap.

"With the upcoming changes in tax laws, record low interest rates and

surprising" said Hall. F. Willkie, president of Brown Harris Stevens

What? Oh, the menu outside? It said "tartine de merde d'oie." Uh? Yes, that's a goose shit sandwich. Well, it's what you ordered.

No, there are no other restaurants around here. I'm afraid they are all shut down until 2016, so it's the shit sandwich or nothing. Actually, nothing is not an option either.

Well, be careful what you order next time. A service charge of 150% will be added to your bill automatically, but we still appreciate tips.

What? So's you mother, asshole.

I think it is all known by someone(s), but is being held back by God himself until the pressure is so great that when the dam breaks, nobody, but nobody can hold back the flood.

Almost like we had a Hurricane and a Fat treacherous fool that made sure the election went a certain way. This all looks far too planned to me, not by men but by a divine hand. Now, you have the same fifteen employee shoulder, the Obamacare level at fifty, and then around one hundred and eighty five employees (industry and state specifics apply to this).

Obamacare makes a higher level of full time unemployment structural, hence ore FSA voters. This the strategy Labour used in England with Healthcare.

Splitting into "shell" sub-units under 40 each makes sense if the total company would only consist of 2-3 of the units.

But for a "real" big corporation. . .no.

I just really feel bad for young people today. They've just been handed a gigantic lifetime butt-screwing, in terms of higher taxes, higher unemployment, lower lifetime wages, and they don't know it.

Older folks in what now might be termed "legacy" jobs will eke by, but the good days are definitely done.

I would posit a more sinister solution to the problem. For years i've wondered how Liberals could be so stupid. Their policies cannot work long term, and when they come to a head it will be economic chaos followed by social chaos.

Then I realized, if you kill off a lot of people, you will improve the overall economic situation. Kill off freeloaders, and you won't have to feed them. Kill off the people who you owe the money to, and you won't have to pay them.

Then it all started to make sense. It's a feature, not a bug.

392 The farther we go the more of what we are all in looks like the final battles in LOTR. This is not just about America it is about freedom being extinguished on the whole earth. Truly a battle between light and darkness. We marvel here about how liberals can resist common sense and logic. It is incomprehensible to us, but we seek even more logic to defeat them.

This is a mistake, it is why we all weary of men like Boehner but celebrate Breitbart. We are far beyond reason and logic. People are now controlled and a part of spiritual tribes. People have made deep subconscious decisions to be a part of evil or good.

You will not defeat them by physical means, you must rise up higher to be spiritual men and women. Stop cursing the darkness and just complaining, start praying and prophesying their downfall and exposure. The nature of light is to defeat all darkness.

Stop making excuses to not be connected to God. You do not have to be religious, in fact better if you are not, but you have to connect with the almighty, with the creator and believe He does choose sides He does want good to triumph, he does not want America destroyed nor another thousand years of dark ages for the earth.

Just look in my locker. . .I've got a nice stash of ammo I built up during the LAST Obama gun panic, plus one spare AR lower I assembled. Its funny, about two year ago, there was such a GLUT of AR lowers on the market you could buy them for under $80 each.

Of course, uppers and lowers, and ammo are still available now; its just a question of COST. Cost is just higher now during the current panic/bubble. And no matter how many more gun control laws (if any) are passed, they'll still be available. . .again, just at potentially higher cost.

But that wasn't my point. The point is if you want to build an actual working firearm, the receiver is actually the EASIEST part of the gun to fabricate. The upper has the hardest to manufacture parts.

So I'm not really sure what all this obsession with AR-receivers is. If you want to fabricate a functional gun from scratch, AR isn't the way to go. You'll want, instead to build something like a Sten submachine gun, a fairly robust gun that was designed on purpose to be buildable in a simple machine shop.

417 >>>Stop making excuses to not be connected to God.

Oh I'm connected to God. And I've been connected to God enough times to know he won't hesitate to kick his kids in the ass when he thinks they need it. I'm also connected enough to know, that if this is the REAL big one. We ALL suffer. most DIE, and BETTER is a long long way down the road. In the interim, I'm doing what I think I should be doing. Opposing what I see as wrong with the gambits I have available. Right now that list is running mighty thin. And trying to be ready for the worst. Not that you could ever be ready.

420 I looked into making 74w bulbs, the process control and qa fixtures would have to designed from scratch.

So, there is a bit a hurdle to get in, however I was assured that technicians in Vietnam can make mistakes recording the test results. So the only real problem is merchandising, getting into the supermarket/Walmart/Home Depot food chain can be expensive.

Did it ever occur to you that many of our laws exist for the purpose of preventing people from gaining enough wealth to challenge the existing wealthy?

They got their's, and the last thing they want is upstarts challenging their social order.

427 389 The political path to freedom is now closed to us. The American system made no account for such a large number of people relentlessly trying to dismantle it in a multigenerational effort.

I agree with your assessment, but not with your conclusion. We are all under pressure to now grow up, I mean spiritually. God made sure to let us know this last year that there is no answer in the political arena, but that does not mean there is no answer.

It is just a harder and more personal answer than we have been able to accept. I firmly believe that if even a handful of men and women become true prophets, true seers then the course of the nation can be reversed. Our battle has elevated to be almost entirely spiritual, think of Obama, in himself he is NOTHING, yet he seems to be directed and protected by something, he seems untouchable, that is a Satanic protection, and it can be broken by earnest belief and prayer of righteous people.

Or we can just whine and cry and pretend we are victims, and watch human freedom go down the toilet. I mean other than believing in some super-hero or UFO's I wonder what choice we have? There are no other lands to move to, this is it.

Dennis Reynolds: That's because he's a bear.
Mac: What?
Dennis Reynolds: He's a bear. You see, some gay guys are twinks and other are bears. This gay guy's a bear. By the way, we are totally cool with that. To each his own.
Frank Reynolds: Wait, I'm a little confused here. What's a twink?
Dennis Reynolds: A twink is small and slender, like mac.
Mac: Oh, no, I'm too muscular. I would be a bear.
Dennis Reynolds: Uh, don't think so, bro. Not hairy enough.
Frank Reynolds: Smooth. Now, I would be a bear.
Dennis Reynolds: No, no. See, I don't think you'd be a bear either. As a matter of fact, I don't know what you'd be. You're definitely not a twink.
Frank Reynolds: I'd be a top, that's for sure.
Mac: Can a twink be a top or is that reserved for bears?
Dennis Reynolds: I'm sure there's a great deal of switching back and forth but I think more often then not bears are tops, unless they happen to be power bottoms.
Frank Reynolds: What's a power bottom?
Mac: A power bottom is a bottom that is capable of receiving an enormous amount of power.
Dennis Reynolds: Actually Mac, you've got it backwards. You see, the power bottom is actually generating the power by doing most of the work.
Frank Reynolds: Does power have to do with size or strength of the bottom?
Mac: Now Dennis, I heard speed has something to do with it.
Dennis Reynolds: Speed has everything to do with it! You see, the speed of the bottom informs the top how much pressure he's supposed to apply. Speed's the name of the game.

I don't think it is so much of a dice roll. I have always thought that the real power in this nation are conservatives. Liberals occupy Media, Legal, Education, Entertainment, Social program administrations, and other non-tangible jobs.

Conservatives occupy the Military, Oil and Gas Industries, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Law Enforcement, and other serious jobs.

I'll put up our stack of people in combat against their stack of people any day of the week.

Wishing doesn't make it so. I've looked high and low and can't find a single reference to America in the Bible. If we were so central to God's plan, don't you think He would have mentioned it?

Many Biblical scholars think this scripture is reference to America:

Rev 12:14 But the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly into the wilderness to her place, where she was nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent.

The woman is the church, the thinking is that America has been the last refuge of the church, and that seems to be more and more true as "isms" and Islam devour the world. My own thinking is that a time, in this context is 100 years. So for 250 years America is the refuge for protestant Christianity. Certainly for the last 100 years 90% of all missionary effort has come from America. And now Christianity is under assault in America like no other time.

This is why you incorporate the family business. Make everyone a shareholder and you avoid the nonsense. There is that bit about family in-fighting but you can just shoot them and dig a hole. Not so with the IRS.

442 A few weeks back I interviewed two leaders in the industry I cover which has a retail component who lamented over this. One of those year in review look at next year deals. They respect their associates and don't want to do it but the costs are very real and for the larger guys shifting more to part time is in the works. A smaller guy was looking at head count reduction below the 50 mark. And even with the known costs there remain so many uncertainties in the "wait to see what's in it" sense. There is no confidence in the small business sector after this election. 2013 will make 2012 look like a banner year on the employment and compensation front.

And all this has been discussed for a while now at industry conferences along with the ramifications of the NLRB and a tidal wave of additional regulatory impacts both large to small. I tell my progressive drone buddies who post their political spam on Facebook about this stuff actually being real and not some pundit talking point and they can't seem to get their brains out of unicorn land long enough to even consider such a thing.

444 Interesting point of view. Do you think God is just too busy or uninterested in the day to day goings on here on this little planet?
Posted by: Velvet Ambition at January 03, 2013 04:09 PM (R8hU

I believe He is intensely interested on what goes on in our little planet. Why else would He send to us His Son to save us? My point is that--save for those rare, logicallyinexplicable and extraordinary events we call miracles--He acts through us. When we submit andturn ourselves over to His will, we become an expression of that will, that Divine Purpose. That's what I believe, anyway. I'm no theologian, just a nobody from Nowhere, Indiana.

More practically, when I pray I don't pray for stuff or for events to go my way. I pray for qualities of character and rightness of motivation. Make me kinder, more tolerant, braver than I would otherwise be, that sort of thing.

Posted by: John "Tax" Roberts at January 03, 2013 05:42 PM (WBGqy)

451 Jehu, here at the end of this thread I will chime in. As a Catholic, I do believe in miracles. God does intervene in the affairs of men from time to time (Battle of Lepento) but it is only when we, as a nation, turn to Him for help.

Yes, like troyriser says, most of our prayers should be for our own strength and faith, that we should not be of weak character and instead do His will.

I have thought for quite some time, since George Bush's recount in Florida, that we are in a spiritual war which many do not even understand is going on.

The final numbers in the Florida recount were the same as the soldiers who followed Gideon to victor. The Supreme Court decision came down on the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas and the Vision of the Virgin Mother in Mexico.

There is great evil in our nation which has infiltrated the highest levels of our government. I STILL want someone to ask Obama about the massive scar on the back of his head, since the anti-Christ will be one who survives a massive and normally fatal head wound.

Anyway, thank you for bringing a message of hope and redemption. Prayer is the best thing we can do.
