As expected, the House will take up the Hurricane Sandy relief bill this week.

After initially bungling this from a PR perspective, I'm highly confident that they won't ultimately pass the entire pork-laden monstrosity that the Senate sent over in the last congress. Otherwise the PR mess was completely avoidable.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, January 03, 2013. On this day in 1961 a government test reactor near Idaho Falls, SL-1, underwent a rod ejection accident with a steam explosion killing 3 workers. There has been a lot of speculation but the official findings are that they were removing a control rod by hand and pulled it out too fast. That resulted in the reactor going prompt critical in the channel with the rod (Delta-k dot). The steam formation blew the rod out and through the man pulling it, pinning him to the roof of the building. The other workers died from radiation exposure.

YES. If Boehner is removed, I hope we get a conservative, but since the Quislings run the establishment, then I imagine this move merely to be a reshuffling of the Titanic's deck chairs.

We really do need some sort of a march on RNC headquarters and demand the entire leadership step down and replaced with the likes of Gohmert, Bachmann, et al.

59 The fact that both Christie and King singled out Republicans and Republicans alone for their tirade shows all you need to know where their principles lie.

Christie knows he is finished nationally after his Obama suckup so now he is playing to become entrenched as NJ Governor for as long as he wants it.

King on the other hand is more shocking as I thought he was solid on security matters, I guess you never know a representatives true principles until his sweet, sweet pork is held up.

Anyway King and NY can go suck a bag of for all I care.

Christie has me torn up because I live in NJ and there is NO GOP/CONSERVATIVE alternative to the fat man.

*deep breath*

Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Four – I repeat – four damn degrees outside. And here I am back at the desk wondering what fresh hell the day will bring.

I didn’t really have time to prepare anything substantial this morning, so let’s talk a little bit about Dean Martin:

Dino was an enigma, even to those closest to him – “he’s either the most complex man on earth or there’s absolutely nothing there,” his wife Jeannie once complained – and he seemed to have no other desire than to just float through life without working much at anything. The biographer Nick Tosches called it menefreghismo, which roughly translates to “don’t give a damn.” Martin lived his life as he wanted, and as opposed to Frank Sinatra, who cared what others thought of him, he simply didn’t.

There was a birthday party one night at Dino’s. A couple of hours into it, there was a knock on the door. Frank answered to find two of LA’s finest standing there. They had received a complaint about the noise, they said.

Who would complain, Frank asked? All of the neighbors were at the party! “To tell you the truth, Mr. Sinatra, the call came from inside the house.”

Frank nodded. “I’ll take care of it.” He went looking for the host, but Dino was nowhere to be found. Finally, Frank walked into Dean’s bedroom, and there he was, lying on the bed with a putter in his hand, watching TV.

Dean nodded. “Hey, pally.”

“Don’t give me that ‘hey, pally’ stuff,”
Frank retorted. “What the hell’s the idea of calling the cops on your own party?”

Dean shrugged. “Hey, they came, they ate, they drank. Now let ‘em go home. I gotta get up in the morning.”

And then there was the time, during the heyday of the Rat Pack, that Frank paid a Vegas call girl $1000 to show up, naked, in Dean’s bed. When the singer found her there, he told her to get dressed, then gave her $2000 to go back to Sinatra and tell him Dino was the best she’d ever had.

And one of Dean’s favorite quotes, from the comedian Joe E. Lewis: “You’re not drunk if you can lay on the floor without holding on.”

Now it’s time for a cup of tea before I open a slew of angry boss e-mails. Hope you all have a wonderful day.

68 What is well known is that the planning for Sandy recovery is moving ahead full speed regardless of this bill. The "stuff" that has to happen before any construction can begin; the planning, engineering designs, permits, environmental evaluation, cultural resources reveiw, endangered species review, wetlands review, stormwater and pollution prevention plans - all of it is happening now.

As Governor, Christie knows this must be done first, so his crybaby speech is nothing but political pandering against Republicans. He also knows who porked up the bill, but disregarded that because he didn't want to anger the Democrats.

The planning phases will take another 6 months (minimum) before serious rebuilding can begin. Chris Christie chose to not let a good crisis go to waste. But can we blame Christie? Is he not simply acting like a Democrat politician in a state that insists their politicians act this way? It's ugly as hell, but could there be a better image of our current state of politics: a great big fat guy screaming for more pork.

Hitler didn't have to give the exact number of Jews OK? Stop pressuring the man. And besides, his father wrote his thesis on the basis that it was moral and ethical to tax all citizens at 100% as long as their needs were met. Kinda like slavery.

97 This is not just a ban of future sales; they will actually force
collection of these if passed. I see this going to court almost
immediately.

Court will be the best case scenario. As far as laws being dismissed with prejudice, that's what a finding of unconstitutionality is. What the means, though, is that the pols just pass a different bill and the litigation starts up all over again. In theory, a court could hold elected officials in contempt for blatant violations of a court's rulings and orders but then you get into you've made your ruling now enforce it territory.

Philadelphia has been in open defiance of PA gun laws for decades and pretty much every municipal ordinance that gets passed re: guns gets struck down by the higher courts. It's all a game to the pols because, after all, they aren't the ones paying the legal bills. That's coming from the state/city/county budget and so what if they lose and have to pay the other side's bills too. It's all Monopoly money to them.

130 The culture war us over and conservatives lost

http://tinyurl.com/adrufrp

This is a column in the Daily Caller. The writer is pointing out something that , in his own way, Andrew Breitbart tried to point out over the last few years before his death.

Everything is caused by our decaying culture. Everything. The FSA? Produced by the collapse of marriage and the rise of the welfare state, with no shame attached to being on the dole.

Low-info voters? Caused by the collapse in education and the distraction of popular entertainment.

The in-fighting in the GOP? Caused by people who cannot accept delayed gratification and want what they want RIGHT NOW. (For the two arms of this group, see Peter King and Mark Levin.)

Coarsening, vulgar, violent entertainment brings us Kathy Griffin and the poisonous Tarantino, who has made violence an art form and everyone nods sagely about how talented he is.

I make no secret that I am not a youngster. The culture we have now is so different from when I grew up that if I described my childhood it would be like I was describing an alien planet.

So everyone can rant and rave about whoever, Ryan, Boehner, King, etc. but the fact is that they are the products of our culture, and therefore I see no way out for a very, very long time.

Posted by: Schrödinger's cat at January 03, 2013 08:13 AM (feFL6)

144 #134 I have been thinking about this all morning. I want everyone to consider how little our culture now teaches delayed gratification (and stop with the smutty thoughts on this, I know you guys).

Delayed gratification is what we learn as children with good parents. It is taught by saving your allowance for a new bike, by praacticing piano every day, by studying instead of playing xBox so that you can pass the tet. Delayed gratification is why athletes train for years in order to make the Olympics. It allows young couples to save for the down payment on their homes.

We now have a culture sinking in debt, both national and private. This is because every single thing seems to be wanted RIGHT NOW, whether a car, a home, or a pair of shoes. Saving has gone the way of the dinosaur.

I was serious about Peter King and Mark Levin. Both are responding to the people around them (King to his constituents and Levin to his audience). No compromise. They want it RIGHT NOW.

Well, I have said enough. I fear for my grandchildren's future.

I can't torment him without bugging his wife, who at least keeps her liberalism on the back burner. The 11 year old asked her mom what they were doing. I told her it could have been worse, as they were only making out, she might have had to explain 'tribbing'.

No one is informed, as we have seen by the past election. And, that is how they like it.

People are cynical of the government, and know they are all liars, but they now just wave their hands and shake their heads, and go about their day as if it isn't real to them.

We've had it too good for a few generations, now. No one thinks America can falter or fall.

For a long time the South and flyover country were ignored, while they consolidated their power along the West Coast and the Northeast. With cable television and the internet, the influence has now seeped into almost every rural hamlet and small town.

191 Saving has gone the way of the dinosaur.

What possible use is saving right now? Nothing is paying interest and playing the market is straight up gambling. If you put pre-tax dollars into some deferred tax savings, then you are taking a huge chance as to what the tax rate will be when you start withdrawing as well as that the Feds won't simply confiscate those funds under the guise of providing "secure" returns. If you put post-tax dollars into some kind of investment, you are running a substantial risk of loss of principal to get any type of decent (I'll define decent as over 4%) ROI. Savers are being flat out punished.

Random thought of the morning - I can't wait for the epic howling to start when the Boomers who have saved for retirement realize what the deferred part of tax deferred means. I anticipate much shrieking about how dare 30-40% of my money be taken away by the same people who are full of Smug about how the rich should pay their fair share. I plan on pointing and laughing.

211 #191 "Of what possible use is saving now?"

That is the entire point. In a different culture, the fact that savings accounts pay .001% interest annually would have the nation up in arms. But since so few saved money, and so few understand math, it has gone unremarked and is just another "Oh, well" item to add to the list.

I am sure there will be howling from people who have to pay taxes on their retirement account withdrawals, because they forgot about that when they signed up, plus a great many people of all ages have the retention span of gnats.

However, since this is probably a moot point since I assume that IRA's and 401K's will be confiscated by the government as a favor to us.

215 When Obama says the rich still aren't paying their share, that means he wants more punitive taxation on white folks that aren't in the pocket of the Democratic Party; but "minority" businesses still deserve all the favor that the government can bestow on them, investing in "green" scams is still good policy, the lobbying / government revolving door should remain un-taxed, unions should continue to get illegal benefits at the expense of "secured" bondholders, financial accountability in Hollywood and Wall Street should remain essentially zero, and sweetheart intellectual property laws and the Hollywood tax cuts should remain unquestioned.

There are so many exceptions to this "fair share" talk that the phrase should come with cross-hairs, as those who would pay it are in effect so tightly targeted.

238 The "fiscal cliff" legislation passed this week
included $76 billion in special-interest tax credits for the likes of
General Electric, Hollywood and even Captain Morgan. But these subsidies
weren't the fruit of eleventh-hour lobbying conducted on the cliff's
edge -- they were crafted back in August in a Senate committee, and they
sat dormant until the White House reportedly insisted on them this
week.

Besides financial clients like Citi, Goldman
Sachs and Morgan Stanley, CTP represented green energy companies like GE
and the American Wind Energy Association. These companies won extension
and expansion of the production tax credit for wind energy.

Hollywood hired CTP, too: The Motion Picture Association of America won an extension on tax credits for film production.

Is anybody responsible for anything anywhere? Apparently if you live in a blue state and get hit by a hurricane govt will bail you out at the expense of the red states. If you don't want to get hit by a hurricane, move away from the coast. I didn't make you move there. I didn't make you forget to buy flood insurance. Seriously, what in the hell is this money for? It wasn't even a bad hurricane. 60 BILLION DOLLARS? Seriously? And nobody will even question this, of course you get the money, gosh, where do I sign?
what does that come to? 60 billion divided by 300 million, that's what, $200/person we just added to the credit card? So in terms of people who actually have jobs and pay taxes that's what $500/person?
Have we completely lost our minds?

I recently helped a client with transferring some savings bonds and we were all amazed that she's getting 4-5% on them. Then we all got depressed that that's now considered a huge rate of return.

I have a small portfolio, though it's huge to me, and my investment guys and I are hashing out what to do about the part that's in a bonds fund. The issue is that the bond fund is supposed to be one of the more conservative long-term investments. Well, if munis are going to be deemed a lesser priority than pensions in municipal bankruptcies, there goes the protections that make munis a safe investment. Once that's gone, there's no possible way I want to be in the municipal bond market. I'd far rather develop a nice drug habit then give my money to say Los Angeles.

Another note about Dean Martin. Part of his public persona had always been as something of a drunk. I loved watching his show when I was a kid (for the babes) and he always had a drink in his hand, and acted slightly inebriated. After his passing some reporter asked Don Rickles, who was a close friend of his, if Martin's boozing was for real. Rickles' response was "bullshit". Rickles elaborated saying that here was a guy (Martin) who was on the golf course every day, betting (some ungodly amount of money that I don't remember exactly, other that it was at least in the tens of thousands of dollars at least) per hole, and winning most of the time. Rickles went on to sayessentially that no one who was drunk all the time could do that and get away with it (betting on his golfgame) the way Dino did.

Martin's friends all agreed, however, that he went on a serious downhill slide following the death of his son, who was a California ANG pilot (he waskilled in the crash of his F-4 Phantonjet). Dean Martin never really recovered from that, and died himself a couple of years later.

That drives me NUTS. ARRRGH. I can accept it when the play is, say, a touchdown, since touchdowns are fun. But even then, unless the touchdown is a significant one -- and one could argue that in today's age of parity, every touchdown is pretty significant -- then just toss the ball to the ref or into the stands and then go sit the fuck down. Seriously. You're playing a game, fellas. You're not Jesus.

Yeah, I think you're right -- what I remembered was many beers years ago. Assuming 10,000 invested for 15 years...
4% 18,009.44
4.5% 19,352.82
5% 20,789.28

So it would have to be a little under 5% interest to double in that time.

Yeah, I was taught the Rule of 72 as well. I'm not saying that 4-5% is bad, just that 4-5% used to be considered a low to fair rate of return. Now it's considered high. Insty has been saying for years that if a Republican were in the White House, the fact that cds are at 1% instead of 6% would be getting major coverage given that many retirees were counting on the interest from those to live.

The issue with drawing out money from 401(k)s or the like isn't just the instant tax hit plus 10% penalty. It's that you are, in theory, destroying 20-30 years of future investment returns as well. Again, that's true but only if you believe that you will actually receive those returns. If you don't, and I'm seriously starting to have doubts about that, it may be wiser to withdraw funds to pay down debt, your mortgage, buy guns and food, etc.

There's my ray of sunshine for the morning.

279 YouTube: UFC 155: Dana White on "Brown Pride" vs "White Pride" Tattoos, Chris Leben + The Chili Peppers

http://tinyurl.com/bxyympn

Up front (in the first minute and a bit), Dana White explains why having a huge Brown Pride tattoo on your chest is nothing but wonderful, while a White Pride tattoo would be unacceptable to UFC and would prove the person who wanted to have it was vile.

A transcript would not give you the full flavor of the prejudice the speaker shows. It's not subtle at all. It's about cultural and racial contempt, from one group of people in power toward another group of people without any effective political representation.

"That tells us where you're at, right off the bat."

"Brown Pride means he's proud to be Mexican, he's proud of his heritage."

(By the way, he's not Mexican, his father was apparently an illegal, he does not speak the language fluently and has spent no major amount of time in Mexico, and has had all the advantages of being American. But he has his Brown Pride, and that's all good.)

Other people don't get to have such a "colored" "heritage"; they get to be defined as contemptible if they think they should have equivalent "pride" rights.

"If you even make that statement you're probably some redneck hill-Billy out in the middle of some country bumpkin somewhere, and we know where you're at and what you're thinking."

287 So let me get this straight. Mark Levin is now somehow symbolic of the blue state mentality - I want it all I want it now? A man who has has spent his career running the Landmark Legal Foundation, taking on the EPA, the Department of Education, etc.?

I understand you may think him a blowhard and annoying and feel he's bad for the so-called conservative's "reasonable" image. However, if you listen to him regularly, you'd realize that he's taught millions people about the founding principles of our country. He spends a considerable portion of his shows each week on the founding documents and the history of the country. Is he softer on the politicians that he likes? Well, he's human, so yes. And so do all radio hosts - how would they manage to have guests on if they didn't do so? It's a business after all and I believe having a successful business was a conservative principle.

But implying that Levin is representative of the blue state mentality (and I guess by default that somehow John Boehner better represents conservatism because of his "reasonable" support of Plan B) is just pettiness. Just say you don't like Levin - a lot of people don't. My husband won't let me listen to him if he's on the same floor of our house.

291 #287 See, this is the same thing that happens every time a radio talk show host is criticized.

There is no doubt Levin has done some good stuff. I salute him for his books and for his work promoting shlter adoption of dogs. However, when a controversial issue comes up (pick one of 20 over the last 10 years) we do not get reasonable commentary. I am very familiar with him, and it is absolutely true that when he thinks someone isn't doing what he thinks is the right course of action he goes Defcon 1 and riles all of his listeners up as well.

I do not think this is a healthy way to behave and I do not think it is good for the country. He is only one of many who behave in the exact same way (and they all aren't on talk radio - some are posting here on Ace).
