The Last Words of Pilots

As transcribed from recovered cockpit voice recorders by the NTSB.

As you'd expect most are of surprise and confusion and a good amount of cursing but some (mostly foreign) seem rather fatalistic. I'm pretty sure mine would be some variant of "Fuuuuu###k!".

Well for one thing the US is barely more murderous than most of Europe is - despite having FAR more guns.

The Man Who Stopped a School Shooting

Over 46 years ago when there weren't SWAT teams to respond to them.

Until the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech, the deadliest school shooting in American history occurred at the University of Texas in 1966.  Charles Whitman, an architecture student at the university (and a Marine Corps veteran) climbed the landmark, 28-story clock tower on the UT campus with a high-powered rifle, then opened fire.  Sixteen people died before a small group of Austin police officers, accompanied by armed citizens put an end to the rampage.

Now, one of the heroes of that deadly day has died.  Former Austin policeman Houston McCoy passed away Thursday at the age of 72, following a long illness.

McCoy, then a young patrol officer, was among the first members of the Austin police department to arrive at the scene after Whitman began shooting.  They found death and horror across a wide stretch of the campus surrounding the sniper's perch.  Dozens lay dead or wounded while Whitman continued firing.  When a police sharpshooter in a small plane circling the tower was unable to draw a bead on the shooter, McCoy and other officers made their way to the  tower and began moving towards the observation deck, where Whitman was partially obstructed by the structure.

The Austin American-Statesman describes how McCoy, armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, ended 99 minutes of chaos.

Read the rest to find out how McCoy, Martinez, and Crum (a deputized civilian) finally took down Whitman.

The Obama administration eased the way Wednesday for illegal immigrants who are immediate relatives of American citizens to apply for permanent residency, a change that could affect as many as 1 million of the estimated 11 million immigrants unlawfully in the U.S.

The change is the latest move by the administration to use its executive powers to revise immigration procedures without Congress passing a law.

(Side Note: They weren't actually ambulances but converted hearses owned by the local funeral homes. My dad new basic first aid and how to drive a land yacht fast. Interesting business model.)

Apparently there were A LOT of Austinites trying to suppress the fire from the tower. He couldn't understand how Whitman was able to get shots off with all the lead flying in his direction. After it was over he went into the tower and recovered the family Whitman gunned down on his way to the observation deck.

Committees produce budgets for the branches of the executive branch that they oversee, then put together a budget for the Executive Branch

Then vote on it. Send it to the Senate. If they refuse to address it, shut it down. Stop with the stupid continuing resolutions.

Do it in the open. Think about it. A plan. Stop meeting with Obama period.

87 If you ever get the chance to see the stage play "CVR" (Cockpit Voice Recorder) they take the actual blackbox recordings from crashes and act out the last 3-5 minutes of flights that did not go well.

It is *amazing* to see how things go from normal to ohshitfuckcrashdeath!!! in a milli-second.

When I went, the set was just a basic star-trek console and simple actors saying the things the pilots did. The only sound effect was a massive subwoofer hidden under the seats which went off for the first crash - I jumped! It was great! :-) They have even used this play in trainings at flight schools.

I was on a 727 on final into La Guardia in the late 1960s ( I was a wee lad). Apparently some fucking retard in a single engine prop plane decided that the air over those big runways was a lovely place to do lazy turns and show off the NY skyline to his passengers. The pilot had to do what pilots do to earn their money, but I remember seeing the small plane just outside the window -- probably 75 feet away -- as everything not strapped down flew into the air, and the 727 did things that were not intended by its designers.

I think my mom kissed the pilot on the way out.

As of now, I will be taking home just short of $200 per month less than I took home in 2012, making the same money, working the same job. Add that to the $200 per month increase in my health insurance over what it was in July 2012 and that shitfuckwadasswipe Obama is now stripmining me for close to $400 in disposable income per month. For some people, that is going to be the difference between sink or swim. And when I see their sweet tears of outrage, I will simply say, well, now you are paying your fair share.

Tonight's post brought to you by the Ho 229 from 1945 - the earliest stealth jet fighter:

On December 14, 1939 Lt. Walter Horten, a member of I/JG 26 (ex-III JG 134) since 1936, was promoted to Geschwader technical officer, replacing Lt. Klaus Mietusch, a young pilot with little technical training. Horten, an energetic and brilliant aviation engineer, is best known today for his innovative flying wing designs.

Hptm. Adolf Galland was ordered into the Geschwader from JG 27 on June 6, 1940.

This is likely very wise. I haven't much choice, at the IL/IN border I disarm, unload and store the weapon with breech lock in one container and the ammo in a second locked container in the trunk of the car. First chance I get once in MO I reload and rearm. Going back I have to stop in StL somewhere to repeat the process and then stop again at the first rest area past the IN border. 444 Well then I apologize and retract it. c**t is bannable but f**k isn't? What would you call someone who accused you of being a rapist twice? If you had five daughters like me? What sort of person does that? Anyways this isn't about me and I have no interest in pursuing it- if that's the type of person who you choose as your type, enjoy. It's a sickness I want no part of- I'm very familiar with little ones seeking negative attention and I don't want to waste any more time on it than i have to.

These (I know I'm generalizing here) are people who go to paycheck loan places and pay God-knows-what %in interest for a payday loan. They don't have the ability, for whatever reason, to figure this shit out. That's why no withholding, making everyone pay on April 15, is an exercise in futility. That's why everything as regards these types of people being responsible is an exercise in futility. They don't fucking get it, and they never will, as long as there's always some way to feed yourself and your family that doesn't require personal responsibility. And therein lies the problem. It gets tedious to keep saying it, I know.

544 It's late, internet peeps. I think we're in a better place than we know, and that our enemies will devour themselves before their plans are fulfilled. They're ruthless and clever, but dumber than a box of rocks.

I'll leave you with something I ran across a couple of days ago, with a hat tip to David Warren. Even you non-Christians might enjoy it. From Cardinal Newman:

“I am a link in a chain, a bond of connexion between persons. He has not
created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do His work. I shall be
an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not
intending it if I do but keep His commandments. Therefore, I will trust
Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my
sickness may serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I
am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He
knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me
among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink,
hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about.”

Enby out.

In the anime cons, Vic who is the voice of Ed in Full Metal Alchemist, will never amount to anything by itself. He has signed it too many times. Now if you have say an artbook and gotten more than two of the voice actors and others who worked on the show to sign it, then it becomes more valuable because its multiple autographs on one item.

I have always wondered if the use of the autopen is legal for bills. Usually it is reserved for proclamations and letters and junk like that. Way back in the day when I worked in our state's Governor's office, it was illegal to use the autopen for official business. Vetoes and bills needed to be done by the Governor. Heck, we couldn't even use it for endorsing the back of his paycheck.

721 My wife owned a realestate company a few years ago when the foreclosure thing was starting to ramp up. She had to do repo's. She said that on several occasions that people told her the mortgage co. told them that if they caught up their payments they would stop the proceedings. When they sent in the last check they got it back and were foreclosed on anyway.

*****

We all assume that insurance covers the bank's losses in the event of foreclosure or a short-sell. Such is not the case. They actually get paid the full amount the moment the first payment is missed.

Yes.

When the first payment is missed.

That means that when they foreclose and sell the home every penny they make is pure profit. If they leave a homeowner in the home, it would take years to make the same amount of money.

I paid $10k in defending against foreclosure and never once asked them to waive a single penny, including their attys fees. The only thing I asked was that they refinance me to make the payments manageable. They refused. I fought for two years while they repeatedly lost paperwork, showed up unprepared at required mediation, etc...

Then I had a new friend who works with a non-profit spill the beans to me.

I know that I was under contract and that I must pay my bills to keep my home, but I assure you that I did everything but get on my hands and knees to keep that house and they rebuffed me at every turn.

It was maddening.

724 When they sent in the last check they got it back and were foreclosed on anyway.

At least 50% of the houses in my development could be foreclosed on if the banks cared to. There was an initial flurry a few years ago, then it mostly stopped. Every mortgage in this place is underwater. All of them.

People haven't started paying again. The banks started realizing this market ain't coming back and they don't want to be the ones the tax bills and code violation notices get sent to. They'd have to book huge losses admitting these loans are in fact dead.

Plus, vacant houses quickly become effectively worthless as they're stripped and gutted, and trashed by the FSA as soon as it becomes apparent its vacant.

727 DAve, yes, it was a Kfir, but it is often referred to as an F-21. The Israelis sold a batch of early Kfir C2s to the USMC as aggressors, where they were designated F-21As. I'm pretty sure N404AX wasn't one of those birds, but all Kfirs in the US tend to be informally referred to as F-21s.

The banks will not just accept payments. They want all attys fees and back payments in a lump sum. That means that folks such as myself, trying to get back on track, cannot.

I was told that I probably could have lived in my house for another couple of years without making payments but after all I went through, I did a voluntary foreclosure and they agreed to wave any deficiencies.

I always wondered why they would be willing to take half as much for a house than they would get if they kept me in it.

Now I know.

3+ years without paying at the house across the street from me.

They're doing that all over this development. New trucks/cars/SUV's all over the place, huge new TVs, all being bought because they're not making a mortgage payment anymore.

They way those people see it, its like finding $1,200 or so laying on the ground every month to spend on new bling.

If a bank never forecloses, or does it many years down the road, it was a good deal I guess.

I live in CA, which is a no-recourse state. Meaning the only way the bank can get its money back is if the house sells at a price that covers the debt.

People are doing this in my neighborhood as well. The next door neighbor and his wife just bought matching black BMWs, and they haven't made a payment in 18 months. I'm not sure how you get a car loan if you don't pay on your home loan.

The husband is up front about it too - "There's nothing the bank can do, so we don't pay."

What I've learned is that the paper trail is so screwed up that, in may cases, the banks cannot foreclose. So, they try to basically shame and frustrate you into leaving the house. If you walk away and do a voluntary foreclosure, they sell. If you do a short-sell, you do the work for them. Either way, they hang in there until they get the house without having to argue before the courts.
