The Man Who Stopped a School Shooting
Over 46 years ago when there weren't SWAT teams to respond to them.
Until the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech, the deadliest school shooting in American history occurred at the University of Texas in 1966. Charles Whitman, an architecture student at the university (and a Marine Corps veteran) climbed the landmark, 28-story clock tower on the UT campus with a high-powered rifle, then opened fire. Sixteen people died before a small group of Austin police officers, accompanied by armed citizens put an end to the rampage.Now, one of the heroes of that deadly day has died. Former Austin policeman Houston McCoy passed away Thursday at the age of 72, following a long illness.
McCoy, then a young patrol officer, was among the first members of the Austin police department to arrive at the scene after Whitman began shooting. They found death and horror across a wide stretch of the campus surrounding the sniper's perch. Dozens lay dead or wounded while Whitman continued firing. When a police sharpshooter in a small plane circling the tower was unable to draw a bead on the shooter, McCoy and other officers made their way to the tower and began moving towards the observation deck, where Whitman was partially obstructed by the structure.
The Austin American-Statesman describes how McCoy, armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, ended 99 minutes of chaos.

Apparently there were A LOT of Austinites trying to suppress the fire from the tower. He couldn't understand how Whitman was able to get shots off with all the lead flying in his direction. After it was over he went into the tower and recovered the family Whitman gunned down on his way to the observation deck.

It is *amazing* to see how things go from normal to ohshitfuckcrashdeath!!! in a milli-second.
When I went, the set was just a basic star-trek console and simple actors saying the things the pilots did. The only sound effect was a massive subwoofer hidden under the seats which went off for the first crash - I jumped! It was great! :-) They have even used this play in trainings at flight schools.

I was on a 727 on final into La Guardia in the late 1960s ( I was a wee lad). Apparently some fucking retard in a single engine prop plane decided that the air over those big runways was a lovely place to do lazy turns and show off the NY skyline to his passengers. The pilot had to do what pilots do to earn their money, but I remember seeing the small plane just outside the window -- probably 75 feet away -- as everything not strapped down flew into the air, and the 727 did things that were not intended by its designers.
I think my mom kissed the pilot on the way out.

Memphis TN was pretty badly flooded in 2011, so was Des Moines IA. Half of Joplin MO and Tuscaloosa AL were smashed by tornadoes that same year. A good portion of the west and Texas were burned, then last year Colorado Springs got it from wildfires.

Launching just a few minutes after sunset from a short runway at an uncontrolled airport in west Texas that doesn't exist anymore. Just got the mains off and dead ahead is a 172 damn near filling my windscreen. No landing light (don't even recall seeing any nav lights either).
Shove the nose down and just manged to pass under him without snagging any of the brush with my gear. Could count every fucking rivet and oil streak on his belly looking up through my canopy (Grumman AA-1B).
No radio response, not a twitch of an evasive maneuver on his part. A second or two difference in timing by either of us and I'd be a forgotten statistic from 30 years ago in the NTSB files.

This is likely very wise. I haven't much choice, at the IL/IN border I disarm, unload and store the weapon with breech lock in one container and the ammo in a second locked container in the trunk of the car. First chance I get once in MO I reload and rearm. Going back I have to stop in StL somewhere to repeat the process and then stop again at the first rest area past the IN border. It's almost enough to make me consider just taking I-40 through Memphis and then go up from there.

It's hard to find a good-quality straight blade, they're almost all decorative or cheap or mediocre steel.

In the anime cons, Vic who is the voice of Ed in Full Metal Alchemist, will never amount to anything by itself. He has signed it too many times. Now if you have say an artbook and gotten more than two of the voice actors and others who worked on the show to sign it, then it becomes more valuable because its multiple autographs on one item.

I have always wondered if the use of the autopen is legal for bills. Usually it is reserved for proclamations and letters and junk like that. Way back in the day when I worked in our state's Governor's office, it was illegal to use the autopen for official business. Vetoes and bills needed to be done by the Governor. Heck, we couldn't even use it for endorsing the back of his paycheck.

My wife owned a realestate company a few years ago when the foreclosure thing was starting to ramp up. She had to do repo's. She said that on several occasions that people told her the mortgage co. told them that if they caught up their payments they would stop the proceedings. When they sent in the last check they got it back and were foreclosed on anyway.

That means that when they foreclose and sell the home every penny they make is pure profit. If they leave a homeowner in the home, it would take years to make the same amount of money.
I paid $10k in defending against foreclosure and never once asked them to waive a single penny, including their attys fees. The only thing I asked was that they refinance me to make the payments manageable. They refused. I fought for two years while they repeatedly lost paperwork, showed up unprepared at required mediation, etc...
Then I had a new friend who works with a non-profit spill the beans to me.
I know that I was under contract and that I must pay my bills to keep my home, but I assure you that I did everything but get on my hands and knees to keep that house and they rebuffed me at every turn.
It was maddening.

At least 50% of the houses in my development could be foreclosed on if the banks cared to. There was an initial flurry a few years ago, then it mostly stopped. Every mortgage in this place is underwater. All of them.
People haven't started paying again. The banks started realizing this market ain't coming back and they don't want to be the ones the tax bills and code violation notices get sent to. They'd have to book huge losses admitting these loans are in fact dead.
Plus, vacant houses quickly become effectively worthless as they're stripped and gutted, and trashed by the FSA as soon as it becomes apparent its vacant.

The banks will not just accept payments. They want all attys fees and back payments in a lump sum. That means that folks such as myself, trying to get back on track, cannot.
I was told that I probably could have lived in my house for another couple of years without making payments but after all I went through, I did a voluntary foreclosure and they agreed to wave any deficiencies.
I always wondered why they would be willing to take half as much for a house than they would get if they kept me in it.

They're doing that all over this development. New trucks/cars/SUV's all over the place, huge new TVs, all being bought because they're not making a mortgage payment anymore.
They way those people see it, its like finding $1,200 or so laying on the ground every month to spend on new bling.

What I've learned is that the paper trail is so screwed up that, in may cases, the banks cannot foreclose. So, they try to basically shame and frustrate you into leaving the house. If you walk away and do a voluntary foreclosure, they sell. If you do a short-sell, you do the work for them. Either way, they hang in there until they get the house without having to argue before the courts.

In 1989 Manuel Noriega was overthrown and captured during Operation Nifty Package, as part of the United States invasion of Panama. He was detained as a prisoner of war, and later taken to the United States.
Noriega fled during the invasion, and a manhunt ensued. He threatened that he would call for guerilla warfare if the Apostolic Nuncio did not give him refuge. He was discovered to be in the Apostolic Nunciature, the Holy See's embassy in Panama. Noriega surrendered on January 3, 1990
