The SEC, Big 12, Big 10, ACC, PAC-12, and Big East all get at least one automatic BCS bowl slot every year.

The best Big East team this year is #21.

Florida is probably the third-best SEC team, but they could have been in the championship game in another season.

180 Sports on Al Jazeera USA?

From WZ:
Dangerous sport games such as wrestling are banned in Islam because they are posing harms to athletes, a Saudi scholar has said.

“It is not permissible for a Muslim to hurt oneself in one way or another,” said Sheikh Ali Al-Hikmi, a member of the Supreme Scholar Authority, Alhayat newspaper reported.

“Dangerous games like wrestling and other fighting duels could lead to impairment or harm in the brain or the body.

Islamic View on Wrestling
“Therefore, it is prohibited to practice such games.”

Islam encourages followers to practice sports.

The general rule in Islam is that if sports are free from things which are prohibited in Shari`ah, then practicing those sports is beneficial and permissible.

The Islamic position on sports and games is determined by weighing and comparing all relevant benefits and disadvantages.

“Therefore, dangerous games such as wrestling and other fighting duels are not permitted in Islam since they cause unnecessary harm to oneself and the opponent,” Hikmi said.

College pigskin is weird. You can't count on its fans being fags, as likely as it may be. Therefore, at least some of the Rose Bowl mourners in the Badger State may be not-Commie fag junkie Complex members (from a philosopher's point of view), and therefore (some compulsion for anyone who may cling to a thin reed of Reason), you don't get a Schadenboner, even if your team is called Ducks. 229 Al Gore, fucking hypocrite. Al Jazeera to buy Current TV.

"Al Jazeera did not disclose the purchase price, but people with direct knowledge of the deal pegged it at around $500 million, indicating a $100 million payout for Mr. Gore, who owned 20 percent of Current. Mr. Gore and his partners were eager to complete the deal by Dec. 31, lest it be subject to higher tax rates that took effect on Jan. 1, according to several people who insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly."

What do you call eleven Louisville cheerleaders?

A full set of teeth.

233 Damnit. Scored with a fake field goal formation from the 2. Was looking for them to shut it down and keep it to a field goal to end the half.

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 10:03 PM (La4QL)

234 If I don't know much about the teams, I'll root for

1) not Notre Dame

2) not the SEC

And 3) the underdog.

So far, a good game for me.

Posted by: Truman North at January 02, 2013 10:06 PM (I2LwF)

235 The Big East will not be defunct. I mean, the Sun Belt still exists. Why not the Big East?

They'll get a bunch of FBS teams to make the jump. Maybe cannibalize the weak sisters of the MAC and ACC. They'll limp along.

Posted by: Truman North at January 02, 2013 10:08 PM (I2LwF)

236 The basketball game earlier was good but I hope Pitino is ripping their asses right now. Won by 18 but they spent the last 5 mins of the game showboating and not playing impressive basketball. Might not be that big of a deal but they started the game down 13-3.

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 10:09 PM (La4QL)

237 Kentucky game was hard on the nerves.

Posted by: NCKate at January 02, 2013 10:12 PM (XwChs)

238 Let's see... A stable Big East...

Syracuse, UConn, Cincinatti, Louisville, Navy, UCF, USF...those are a solid core.

Add UMass, Army, and Buffalo, and you have a not-laughable mid-major conference. Or maybe BC comes back.

The Big East is definitely viable. It's just not a BCS conference, and it hasn't been in at least five years.

Posted by: Truman North at January 02, 2013 10:16 PM (I2LwF)

239 I could even see Notre Dame making the jump the the Big East, which would absolutely make it a BCS conference just from the television money alone.

Posted by: Truman North at January 02, 2013 10:17 PM (I2LwF)

240 I'm glad they won the UK game, wish they hadn't spotted them so many dumb fouls. They definately need to learn how to bump and bang without the small fouls. They can get away with it in the Big East but they'll foul out and lose in March fast doing that stuff.

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 10:29 PM (La4QL)

241 Awesome kickoff!!! onside, recovered by U of L and two personal fouls. bam! 1 play and a TD. Dude I love this game!

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 10:32 PM (La4QL)

242 Louisville scored a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in both halves. That's 14 of their 20 point lead.

243 Big East football rocks!

Posted by: yadisneck at January 02, 2013 10:39 PM (Ekr+t)

244 holy crap that's awesome. nice Florida turnover! If that lineman could have caught that it'd have been a fumble recovery for 6.
I really hope Strong wants to make a statement about underrating the Cardinals and doesn't let up. I hate when they go into that passive squishy second half offense and defense. Pour it on guys!

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 10:41 PM (La4QL)

245 When I saw it was #3 vs #21 it seemed likely to be a blowout, just not in this direction.

Posted by: Looking Glass at January 02, 2013 10:42 PM (g3wOT)

246 That series was pretty fucking awful. I hope they were just caught flat footed because they weren't planning to get the ball back so soon because that was ugly.

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 10:43 PM (La4QL)

247 @246 AllenfromLou,

Good point, but right now I'd just as soon the game got a little more interesting. I'm pretty surprised at how well Louisville is shutting down Florida.

Posted by: Looking Glass at January 02, 2013 10:46 PM (g3wOT)

248 Looking, I'm sure to anyone not from Louisville this game is a big who cares, but you can't imagine how good this feels for a U of L fan. The ESPN set booed when 1 single analyst said U of L could win this game. For weeks it's been about "can this game stay reasonable or how bad will the blowout be?" Even our sports talk radio was down on it, the only people calling in this morning saying it was going to be a U of L win were the fans that had pulled an all nighter and were still up from drinking on Bourbon street down in New Orleans.

Last night I felt the same way watching the NIU game but it's my team now and I want to see a blow out!

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 10:53 PM (La4QL)

249 And the spread was 14.5 when I looked last night.

256 Flatbush, but Al Jazeera was better?

NCKate, eh, I hated chem, even in high school. I'm not looking forward to doing having to check that stuff when I have a lil one that grows up. I was in speed school, didn't like it too much so I went got an icky blue collar job. Ended up getting my accounting degree at IUS and MBA at U of L. Best part of the MBA was student season tickets to football and basketball for $120 bucks a seat.

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 11:15 PM (La4QL)

257 Looking, defense held though. I don't think there was any other point this season when I could say that in the second half. Bizarro world

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 11:19 PM (La4QL)

260 I only went to one or two games at Freedom Hall, and they were at the tail end of the Crum era when he wasn't up to his old standards. When you visit your folks in Louisville you should get tickets to a game in Yum Center, or as they call it the worlds biggest sports bar with live sports. If you can't get in for a mens game, the womens games are well attended and loud and I heard the volleyball games are too. Not sure if they open the bar for the volleyball though.

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 11:25 PM (La4QL)

261 @259 AllenfromLou,

That was a perfect "bend but don't break" defensive series. The interception in the end zone was ever run out to the 20 to get more time off of the clock.

Louisville's showing the poise, preparation, and domination I expected from Florida.

You should be proud.

Posted by: Looking Glass at January 02, 2013 11:27 PM (g3wOT)

262 Ha! Good to know. My father is working hard recruiting my son, his only grandson, to come up there for school in a year and a half. He runs cross country and plays lacrosse.

Posted by: NCKate at January 02, 2013 11:28 PM (XwChs)

263 Is that Florida coach about to cry??

I am proud, these guys are doing something thought impossible. I thought they could hang in there, make it a game and bring it down to the end and have a shot. I couldn't imagine they were going to make it happen like this. This is nuts. I wish he had laid down in the endzone. I know it chewed up time but if he'd been tackled at the 2 it would have been a 3 and out.

NCKate, if you're son wants to do D1 he should look at U of L. THeir cross country team is ranked I think. I don't know if they have lacrosse, Bellarmine does though, a real good private school here if he wanted to try for a scholarship. Heck I liked IUS just across the river, and their new dorms are freaking insane.

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 11:35 PM (La4QL)

264 Florida's got no quit in them, but a TD return on the kickoff after a Louisiana FG just isn't enough at this point.

Posted by: Looking Glass at January 02, 2013 11:36 PM (g3wOT)

265 The Louisville XC team was here in Charlotte in November competing. The nationals were held there in Louisville at Tom Sawyer State Park, i think. We wanted to get home and see them but we didn't make it.

Posted by: NCKate at January 02, 2013 11:43 PM (XwChs)

266 Shelton got drafted by the Panthers six or seven years ago and I went out and bought his jersey. LeFors was here too. None of them stuck around though.

Posted by: NCKate at January 02, 2013 11:45 PM (XwChs)

267 Does Florida not know the game clock is running?

Posted by: Looking Glass at January 02, 2013 11:48 PM (g3wOT)

268 Why was the gameclock running after the Florida player went out of bounds on first down? That cost them twenty seconds they can't afford to lose.

Posted by: Looking Glass at January 02, 2013 11:49 PM (g3wOT)

269 I lived across the street from Tom Sawyer when they had it, I was amazed at the number of people there. It was pretty cool seeing how big of a deal it was. I like seeing Louisville get these big national tournaments going now. They had the volleyball national championships a few weeks ago and it was nuts downtown. Can't imagine if we get a mens basketball tournament game.

They're supposedly trying to get olympic swimming trials but there's some confusion about how the facilities will be set up.

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 11:52 PM (La4QL)

270 That would be awesome.

Posted by: NCKate at January 02, 2013 11:54 PM (XwChs)

271 Honestly it seems like Florida has given up. Seems like they know it's not happening but they want it to be respectable. They aren't hustling and they don't seem to be pushing the tempo to get it done and save time. I wish Louisville would help finish this thing for good.

Posted by: AllenfromLou at January 02, 2013 11:54 PM (La4QL)
