Krauthammer: We Surrendered Completely, and Have Set the Stage for Future Surrenders

One point he makes is that Obama insisted on rate hikes -- so that he later can insist on the deduction-reductions Republicans offered. That is, he'll get both.

And what did we get in return? Nothing.

And he Obama also did this to break the Republican Party, which he did.

He has some political victories. But Presidents are evaluated according to non-political "objective goods," as I've called them, things which are undeniably good no matter what your politics -- like prosperity.

We'll see how he comes out in the history books after the collapse he's engineered.

Thanks to @rdbrewer4.

“In a long-awaited interpretation of the new health care law, the
Obama administration said Monday that employers must offer health
insurance to employees and their children, but will not be subject to
any penalties if family coverage is unaffordable to workers.”

So under the Affordable Care Act, care doesn’t have to actually be, you know, affordable. Gotcha.

For reference when exactly did you predict that downgrade of the US credit rating? Oh that's right you said it would never happen. Where we never ever take a stand on anything and as a consequence never accomplish anything.

To the retard above preening about "permanent" tax rates, go read up about how congress functions. They can change those again any time they choose. And you might want to brag about your spending cuts after they happen, unless you think $357 million was a success.

That means no one will blame this stuff on Congress after a few years because Congress is forgettable.

Obama will be the one with the huge amount of debt unleashed under his name.

We keep dealing in reality when our opponents make shit up out of whole cloth. The deal wasn't everything we wanted but it really was the best we could do.

They screwed Reagan. Why on earth did he think they wouldn't screw him too? What's more, it wasn't even about the tax increase, it was about forcing him to renege on his "no new taxes" promise, and thereby did they utterly screw the "brand" of the Republican Party.

Polynikes: I remember during the debates that Romney said exactly that: 1) means tested medicare/SS (which I fucking paid the exact same for as everybody else but then i get fucked on that too); and 2) rich pay more through less deductions.

My personal view is that top federal rate SHOULD NEVER exceed 33%, corporate rate should be 20%, and we definitely need to zero out all these goofy deductions/loopholes.

But Romney proposed making the tax code EVEN MORE PROGRESSIVE so that middle class families would pay EVEN LESS.

How does that further our goals? We are allowing the fantasy to continue by hiding the pain that comes with spending all this fucking money and having the middle class pay less and less.

How does it make any sense to spend shit tons more than we ever have in history and not at the same time ask the middle class, as well as the rich, to pay more in taxes????

There is the disconnect and why I love this deal. At least it doesn't do the dumb shit Romney was thinking of and cutting taxes EVEN MORE on the middle class. Perversely, one could argue that Romney was even more progressive than obummer.

190 Let's see- Democrats vastly increased spending and the expansion of government through Obamacare. The Democrat President tripled the deficit after promising to cut it in half.

The Democrat incumbent President campaigned on a mix of tax hikes on the rich and spending cuts to reduce the deficit. He was lying though, as he refused to endorse any spending cuts at all.

The Democrat controlled Senate refused to even vote on any Republican bill containing spending cuts.

Let's blame the GOP. Clearly it's all their fault.

All the whiney bitches like Drew haven't seen to got around to actually suggesting an actionable alternative that would have succeeded.

Now you move on to the debt ceiling and the Republicans could actually put tax cuts into that negotiation.

You fuckers seem to have no concept of game theory... to avoid the fiscal cliff Republicans HAD to agree to tax hikes, to avoid the debt ceiling the Democrats are going to HAVE to agree to spending cuts. Posted by: Hollowpoint at January 02, 2013 06:28 PM (SY2Kh)

203 Scofflaw, ABSOLUTELY.

Does anyone, I mean anyone, on this blog that can sum up what the Republicans should have done that was not done?? I mean, a plan that people that is based somewhat in realism, rather than just let it burn and fuck everyone.

You do realize that:
1) SCOAMF runs the White House
2) Dems have solid majority in the Senate
3) Blue state rich fucks have been gaming the system for way too long
4) All tax rates were going to expire; now a significant amount are not
5) Pubs can essentially state that dems raised taxes, which we didn't want
6) spending cuts are now the sole and only focus (if GOP messages this right)
7) We couldn't even get nonexpiring tax cuts when we held all THREE FUCKING levels of the legislative process

You are damn right I love this deal given the circumstances. GOP passes with flying colors.

As many note, the real test is on the issue of spending. I'm withholding a grade until then and only then.

And yeah, as someone else noted, the automatic cliff was for everyone to pay more taxes and fuck the military. A demorat's wet dream. How we wriggled out of that I have no idea, but thank God we did!!!

Posted by: Prescient11 at January 02, 2013 06:29 PM (tVTLU)

204 Also, some of these "tax hikes" were things the GOP didn't want cut before, i.e. payroll taxes. That was a stupid tax cut, and I am glad it was rolled back.

The media is giving Obama the win...good.

Also, raising taxing on those above $400k...oooooh, so brutal...we're making them matchstick girls.

Oh noes, we will have to give up deductions later - yes, we will. Its called tax reform when you simplify tax rates.

What if they are not revenue neutral?

Sounds like a recession that will be blamed on Obama, and a great 2014 issue to run on cutting taxes.

I am against raising taxes, but I also know cutting taxes is far, far easier than cutting spending. We have cut taxes before. Cutting spending is hard.

So in the next deal with Obama, fight against any tax increase, but if we get actual semi-decent cuts, take them. Because taxes can be reduced far more easily...but my guess is he will refuse to cut at all, and he will be hurt by that.

Again, nobody looks at Reagan or Clinton and gives any credit to Congress. Democrats almost believe Congress doesn't exist - they seem to want kings. LIV especially have no clue.

All of the "this is a good deal, best we could do" bozos fapping that taxes are off the table are missing the point: Taxes are off the table, and now it's a big fight over whose benefits/handouts/carveouts get cut and whose don't.

So, those same middle class people who avoided the short-term tax consequence of their vote for Obama will happily forgo the various government benefits to which they are entitled? Sure they will. The GOP won't get demagogued over those, and they won't feel pressured to take another "best we could do" deal, right?

"Rich" people? BOHICA. Military? BOHICA. Everybody else? Keep partying, you'll just pay later...manana...whenever.

214 Hey Ace-

Maybe you could put up a post on what you think the Republicans should have done. It's all hand-wringing about surrendering and breaking the party and fascinating million word posts on negotiating theory but what was the alternative, exactly?

Do nothing, pass nothing and taxes automatically go up for everyone. Negotiate and taxes are going up for some - shitty economics but whatever. The tax hikes were the default situation. In game theory the Republicans (proponents of lower tax rates) worst outcome would have been over the cliff, therefore you negotiate.

Now with tax rates permanent the debt limit is default case (no pun intended). For the spending party (the Dems) doing nothing will be the worst case. They now have to negotiate and compromise with Republicans. Far from Republicans being destroyed by this the delinking of the tax rate debate from the spending debate (and making the tax rates permanent) was the best outcome.

The outcome where we just cut spending was not on the table so don't compare this outcome with a theoretical outcome which was not tenable.

You fuckers seem to have no concept of game theory...

You're fucking right we don't. This is no game, it's Real Life. There's no theory to the indisputable fact that this regime has out-spent all of the other presidents COMBINED. The economy is in the shitter, all thanks to the government (don't forget that the CRA caused the housing crash, which was helped along by TFG suing banks over it after Cliton strengthened it).

Inflation is through the roof, food and gas prices are high and going up. Our buying power is going down, our houses have lost a lot of their value. We want spending reduced and a robust economy, but all the fucktards in DC want to do is party and vote themselves raises.

This is a game? You want to use "theory"? How about you put down the bong and try looking away from your stupid video game for a few minutes and try to understand the real world damage these fucks are doing to all of us.

"No" is an easy word to understand. It means "You shall not." When someone tries to Rape you, you say "No." You don't say "it's going to happen anyway so we might as well make the best deal we can" you say "No."

I dunno. Maybe it's too early for these pronouncements.

Republicans were in a lose-lose situation, and lost. Let's all act surprised.

So, what exactly did they "lose"? The Bush tax cuts, for the most part, are not only intact, but permanent. Obamawanted $250k, R's offered $1M, and they settled inbetween. Usually that's calleda"compromise", not a "loss".Supposedly, this deal avoids a recession.

No spending cuts? There's still the matter of the debt limit. That part isn't done yet.

If anything, Obama couldn't make a deal, and had to have Biden do it instead. That sounds like it ought to be embarrassing for the President. So our REAL problemremains the media and how the Republicans interact with it.

If they've proven they are stupid, incompetent and useless, what's the point of suggesting fixes to them?

It's like listening to Cubs fans, or something.

228 Well, look at the bright side: Obama says he will not negotiate on the debt limit.

That is absolutely true.

He will go on vacation again and have Biden do it.

229 "Revenue is a drug, and the US Government is a drug addict. The road to recovery doesn't start with a compromise, it starts with a "No." "

In case you have not noticed, we have cut taxes several times, from Kennedy, to Reagan, to Bush.

But spending keeps going up.

Even when there is no revenue, they can borrow or print, so spending can keep going.

Also, you are acting as if we won the election and its Romney dealing with 2 Republican houses...that's not the case. Deal with it.

You clearly don't know what game theory is; it doesn't mean the issue is a game. Fucking moron.

I don't give a shit about "games" or "theory." I deal with reality and facts.

But thanks for the compliment. You really should've capitalized it, though.

Amen. That is exactly what we should have been pushing for all along.

233 I might be delusional, or at a minimum, over-optimistic, but I'm going to give the GOP this one last chance before I totally adopt the LIB mentallity.

If this 'deal' was truly just part of a strategic plan by the GOP to make true cuts possible in the next 60 days (as some here believe) we'll all know soon enough.

If you're going to use addicts as your example then "no" isn't good enough. If that's all addicts had to do then there wouldn't be any addicts.

There has to be a very hard "bottom" for addicts to start considering another way of doing things. With the populace in the free-shit mode right now and actually getting their free shit, we won't hit the bottom that we need to have to change.

It's going to have to collapse. And I've almost come to the conclusion that the dems should get all they ask for. I'm tired of watching my country slowly die a miserable death. Let's get on with it.

No, I am acting like someone who has principals that are inviolable. I am acting like someone who has chosen to do the right thing because it is the right thing, and not because it is politically expedient.

We got INTO this situation because people would not defend their principals. We will not get out of it short of destruction unless people begin somewhere.

That's why I wanted sequestration. We stand on principals AND the population gets a lesson it very badly and desperately needs and deserves.

Taxes NEED to go up on these people, and it needs to HURT! FedGov NEEDS to be cut, and people need to see we can get by with a 20% cut with very little in the way of ill effects.

Term limits! I think this should be our new focus. It's clear our government is lost, only way to take it back is whitewash the monster. The machine is too corrupt.
This is something that will be politically unpopular, but we the people from any party will be fervently in favor of. Demand term limits!

4 terms for House - 8 years
2 terms for Senate - 12 years
2 terms for POTUS - 8 years
Only eligible for a total of 20 years regardless of office held. Nobody ever to hold elected office can be appointed to another part of the federal government.

He didn't break the republican party. That shit was already broken. Honestly, I don't know what all the fuss is. All they did is what they always do every time we do this, which is about every 3 months.

247 I used to study history intensely, but now know that it was a waste of time. Yes the study did show my why bad things happen and how to avoid them in the future, but since the great majority do not study history it has been impossible to alert them and bring them to the cause.

Now people right history from other history books as resources. Newspapers are considered writings of record, and we know how real those documents are today.

Nope, history in the mind of the masses begins at their birth.

249 Ok, so Obama broke the GOP LOSERship...! Is that a surprise? Or big loss?

Really!

For quite some time, the GOP LOSERship is all about trench political porn warfare -- they really don't care where the trench is -- could be in the socialist endzone, or edge of black hole. As long as they can glean some cushy contributions to their reelection, it's a win for them...

Don't anyone bring up the recollection that this entire sunseting Bush tax cut scheme was their idea in the first place. Such political wizards they are...

Now if only we can get the GOP LOSERship to go to the back of the room so some real adults can take over -- Just as soon as everyone burns thru the PR rum allotment included in the deal... It's party time...!
