*Updated. Normally you pay 6.2% in withholding for Social Security. It had been cut to 4.2% some time ago. Now it is going back up to 6.2%. I should note that your employer never got a cut. They had to pay the 6.2% rate in full the entire time.

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — The fiscal cliff debate is subsiding, but
does that mean higher taxes for middle class Americans are a thing of
the past? Well — not exactly. While the tax package that Congress passed
New Year’s Day will protect 99 percent of Americans from an income tax
increase, most of them will still end up paying more federal taxes in
2013.

That’s because the legislation did nothing to prevent a temporary
reduction in the Social Security payroll tax from expiring. In 2012,
that 2-percentage-point cut in the payroll tax was worth about $1,000 to
a worker making $50,000 a year.

Payday comes in the form of an extension of the Special Expensing Rules which allow Hollywood productions to deduct 15 to 20 million dollars. That’s pretty generous considering that companies that manufacture medical devices are being hit with a tax. But who really needs pacemakers anyway when you’ve got Hollywood?"

104 Irving Pinsky, the lawyer who file the (I suspect) stunt claim in CT, gave reasons that don't make much sense compared to his claimed reasons made for making the claim. I wonder if he was client fishing - and even wonder if he was actually acting on behalf of a legitimate plaintiff who specifically contacted him for representation. He never named his clients, not even to CT, and there have been multiple hoaxers (one who even is known for filing suits under false names) trying to leech off the murders. Pinsky's claim of only acting in the first place because he had exhausted all other means (after a mere two weeks) is absolutely insane and not credible.

He has a bad disciplinary record, history of involvement with distasteful advertising for a lawyer line, and has been attached himself, in his post-2007-reinstatement practice, to the occupy movement which has provided a few grandstanding opportunities.

I can't see an upscale family, even with a child attending Sandy Hook who was affected and suffering, he would be the last lawyer on earth I would consult. I could see assorted grifters trying to do a shake-down or pull a stunt, or him grandstanding.

118 RE the 'fiscal cliff' deal's $3.9T 'price tag'-

"By describing tax cuts as a 'cost' and as 'spending' as liberals typically do, it suggests that all income is effectively the federal government’s to keep. Anything less than 100 percent taxation is effectively a subsidy if this line of reasoning is followed to its logical conclusion. However, conservatives have always rightly argued that it’s the people who have the right to their own earnings. When Americans pay fewer taxes than they otherwise would, it doesn’t represent a cost — it represents savings."

We didn't have any "orientation." Family Day is the day before graduation. The graduates are up early and do a motivational run by platoon. Afterward, the families are directed to the gymnasium, where the young Marines march in, and then you're allowed to finally hug and speak to your Marine. They are released until 3:00 to have lunch with their families (can't leave the island).

Check out the Best Western Inn in Beaufort (across from the city marina). It's very nice, and they cater to Marine families. They have all sorts of information about graduation, etc. Within walking distance there are several great restaurants.

Graduation morning, get back on PI as early as possible, as the viewing stands fill up quickly. Families sit according to their Marine's platoon.

The graduation ceremony is beyond words.

Have fun, and Semper Fi!

157 Somebody (S's cat?) missed the 65% heat to juice at the power plant and what doesn't make it down the wires.

I was determining efficiency from the vantage point of my own wallet, bringing BTUs into a theoretical 12 X 12 foot room. BTUs that not only provided heat, but light at the same time. 139,000 BTU per gallon of heating oil @ 50% efficiency (by the time the heater inefficiency and heat loss through pipe was calculated) = 69,500 BTU per gallon divided by 4.00 a gallon = .0000575/BTU. So 340 BTU per hour produced by 100 watt light bulb replaces .02 of oil.

If you run a 100 watt bulb for 10 hours you would use 1000 watts of electricity or 1 killowatt hour (kWh). So for one hour of usage at .10 per kWh would cost me .01 (10% of .10/kWh) of electricity, which would provide the heat of .02 worth of oil.

Your mileage may vary dependent upon heat source, but for me it's clearly advantageous to use incandescent light bulbs in my NE USA home.

He finally broke down and told me about all the beatings she gave him when he was a kid. Not spankings-beatings with a coat hanger or a broomstick. Beatings for really important things like not having his shoes lined up perfectly in his closet or putting something on his bed for a minute. His stepfather stopped the beatings when he was home, but, if he was at work, she whaled away.

210 First, on the SS tax thing. Frankly, I'm all for lower taxes, but we've got to reform SS before we start cutting the taxes on that again. At that 2% reduction did was weaken social security for little to no purpose except bread and circuses (it certainly didn't stimulate anything.) Thus all we did was push liabilities (and debt) further down the road.
I know it's all "but I want more of my money" and all that, but this deal was bad enough (from a debt/deficit standpoint) that I don't care fore more stupid on it.
(I'm willing to settle for "LiB" if the idiots can't grow a spine and start up austerity, but Make it burn is a little too proactive and hopeless for my taste)

Now then: Nerdy Stuff

Franky, I'm not sure a la cart pricing will work. I was a proponent of it thinking "it'll save my bill!" But really, only if you only watch one or two channels, all with large subscriber bases. Otherwise you're looking an HBO scenario, where all the channels cost around $15/month. I currently pay $90 for Cable and internet I think it's 60/30 respectively. So I'd be able to get 4 channels at HBO prices. I actually watch more than 4 channels. Even if the price goes up to $90 for cable alone, that nets me 20 channels at a conservative $5/month (unlikely). I'm fairly certain I don't watch 20 channels, but in a worst case Cable cost best case a la cart cost scenario I'm barely breaking even. So...meh.

Not everybody does Dump and Run. Okay, everybody does it sometimes, but the good teams actually don't, that much. The breakaways only work when you have somebody fast enough- which means significantly faster than just about everyone else on the opposing team. That doesn't happen that often. It didn't even "back in the day." That's why Pele (and Gretzky) were so awesome.

The strategy is actually kind of compelling, once you see it. Even the hits and checks are part of a larger strategy, when a team is playing well.

Actually in the linked article ESPN was one of the channels they said would jump in price (or dive in content.)
Currently (according to the linked article) Disney charges $5/household for ESPN, but only roughly 25% of households watch it. So (using the math they used) it'd jump in price to $20 (per month).
Of course this assumes people don't just start buying channels just to have them which could happen. But either way, expensive ESPN. (My father in law does that. He pays for the mega cable package just because he can't part with the channels "in case.")

As I've been watching those endless ads of starving Africans, narrated by hollywood twits, and was thinking the same thing. I bet they aren't doing well in collecting lately.

But, not for the reasons they state -- the hopelessness, although they certainly make it sound so.

But, we need to save our own, now. And, give locally, as many of us do. Money is tight.

And, we also see the corruption of the UN, and other non-profit charitable organizations abroad. Other than the Red Cross, whom still broils in politics, but seems the most stable and accountable, I wouldn't trust many other organizations. They all have agendas now.

Finally, it is fact that throwing money at a problem doesn't fix it. It takes a government structure that nurtures growth and opportunity. That is why the programs to help individuals start small businesses in 3rd world countries is worthwhile.

On the ASPCA thing, Insty's pointed out that the increase in begging commercials just so happens to track the settlement where the ASPCA has to pay over $9 million to Ringling Bros. for the frivolous lawsuit. I'm sure those two things have nothing whatsoever to do with each other. Not a thing.

She may genuinely be sick, but, she also has absolutely no intention of testifying about Benghazi. It is also a fact that she partied very hearty during the last few junkets--there were numerous pictures of her "dancing" and drinking heavily. In some of the photos she is very disheveled and looks very drunk. If she does have to testify, being rested and also being able to claim blanks in her memory from a head injury will work well for her. Does no one in the media remember her "Pretty in Pink" testimony before Congress. THer handlers had her so packaged and primped to look like the demure little First Lady that she got away with sitting there with her ankles crossed and sweetly saying, "I don't recall." That was a couple of hard decades ago and she is not FL, she is SoS, which are two very different things.

Currently reading (as part of my Dissertation Prep) "An Odyssey with Animals" written by a former Neuroscientist who was basically marked for death by the PETA/ALF crowd. I personally like it a lot because he smacks down some of the more conciliatory thinkers who would surrender the argument (and thus lose the gains in medical science) just for peace and quite from the nut jobs.
(Also early on in the book, like chapter 2, he directly connects research projects to treatment, in this case treatment for soldiers who have severely damaged limbs. So PETA can suck it.)

I thought PETA stood for "people eating tasty animals."

So back in my past life, (all of 3 years ago ) when I did the animal work, I was down in the facility, and this guy comes out of one of the Animal rooms wearing a Shirt that says "PETA" on the front. I didn't recognize him (and I spent enough time down there, that struck me as odd.)
Now PETA had been causing some minor trouble (hassling people going into the building, which was a general research building not animal specific) signs, protests, the usual. So as he's coming towards me I'm thinking "Do I hit the red panic button to summon the staff here and chase him out?"Before I make up my mind he turns around to get something he forgot and the back of his shirt has the "People Eating Tasty Animals Joke." on it. Apparently he was a new Post-doc or Grad student or something who thought it'd be funny to wear that in an animal facility. I chatted with some of the CompMed staff who told me that that someone else had already told him, given some of PETA's antics that wasn't really a good joke.

I'd vote for worrying about a Presidential candidate using the phrase "women in binders" to describe trying to hire women advisors as if that phrase were somehow indicative of a desire to return to the days of women as chattel as the height of "First World Problems", but YMMV.

There was an article by Spengler on the symbolism of the presence of domestic animals in the traditional Nativity scene:

v\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);}
o\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);}
w\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);}
.shape {behavior:url(#default#VML);}

Domestic animals appear beside the shepherds and
magi in every nativity scene, introduced by St Francis of Assisi in 1223, but not in the canonic
Gospels, where no mention is made of the beasts’ adoration of the Christ child.
This part of story is to be found in the New Testament Apocrypha, in later
texts that Christian authorities consider suspect and misleading. Sometimes, though, the intuition of children is more reliable than the pronouncements of scholars.
What would Christmas be without the sheep and oxen? Judeo-Christian culture places great emphasis on kindness to animals, and the
ox that kissed the Lord’s foot stood in the manger as a representative of all
his fellows.

My company contracts with private security to background check everyone who works with animals. If you even have a whiff of PETA or ALF about you, you are told to clean out your desk under the supervision of corporate security. Several PETA folks have protested outside of our main gate before a couple of years ago. 374 *Updated. Normally you pay 6.2% in withholding for Social Security. It
had been cut to 4.2% some time ago. Now it is going back up to 6.2%. I
should note that your employer never got a cut. They had to pay the 6.2%
rate in full the entire time.

_______________

This is one of those myths that has taken hold. Your employer doesn't pay 6.2%. You pay that 6.2% as well indirectly in the form of lower wages/benefits.

Corporations don't pay ANY taxes. 100% of any tax a corporation pays is passed on to someone else, either consumers, employees, suppliers, etc.

Employees have a background check (I dunno what it does, the facility is a Level 3/4 BSL, so Homeland Security oversees us as well.)

Students IIRC tend to get a bit of a pass on that.
In either case, academic institutions are remarkably security lax, so my initial thought was "someone snuck in one of the back doors."
The facility required a card to use the elevators, so you'd not have gotten very far even if you got past the front desk. Then a second key scan to get into anything non-office space (i.e. labs, etc.). Except the animal facility was right off the loading dock (for obvious reasons) so someone just sneaky enough could have gotten in by catching a closing door, etc.
Or you know...stealing a card.
Actually the main CompMed suite in the old building added a huge mag-lock after ALF or someone broke down the door about 15-20 years ago, broke in and let out the dogs. (And I think may have destroyed a bunch of equipment.)

396 This is one of those myths that has taken hold. Your
employer doesn't pay 6.2%. You pay that 6.2% as well indirectly in the
form of lower wages/benefits. Posted by: Mr. Moo Moo at January 02, 2013 11:43 AM (HDgX3)

Yep, any taxes or benefits are considered by your employer as the cost of having you as an employee. It even has a name--fringe percentage. If you make $50,000 and the fringe percentage for you is 19%, then you cost your employer $59,500 and that is how they budget for you. That is why no one is hiring, because who the f@ck knows what the fringe percentage will be for anyone--will it be 22, 35, 50, what?

400 I just kind of doubt when the writers of the gospel were penning the gospels they would have thought we would assume an absence of animals in a manger if they simply did not mention them. BTW if the Inn was full, assumingly with travelers, responding to the census as was Joseph. Did they ALL walk AND carry all of their stuff. If not where were their mounts staying the night?

404 When RINOs actually have a plan to avert collapse you let me know. I've had enough kick the can.

Nobody has a workable plan to avert the collapse, because it's too late to avert the collapse. Even the "draconian" Ryan Plan wouldn't have cut it.

The measures they'd have to take wouldn't be accepted by the electorate they answer to. And not just the Free Shit Army, either.

There will always be a candidate willing to tell voters that they can have their cake and eat it too. And they'd be more than happy to undo whatever steps were taken by the incumbent who lost his seat for doing the right (but unpopular) thing.

418 So Obama flew back to Hawaii for more vacation and forgot to sign the fiscal cliff bill??

Okay, I need some help on this one. Because IIRC, that's a "pocket veto" and the bill may not actually become law.

He's got 10 days (not including Sundays) to sign the bill or veto it when Congress is in session. However, if Congress adjourns before that 10 days is up, and the bill still isn't signed by the deadline, the bill does not become law, and Congress can't even override the veto.

Considering how close we are to the new sessions of Congress, is it possible that TFG accidentally pocket vetoed his own "grand bargain?"

427 I sympathize with Boehner. I think he knew this was coming the night of November 6, but played out his weak hand anyway. Kudos for bipartisanship, even if he's just kicking the can down the road.

As for a trillion dollars in spending cuts..... ain't gonna happen. Sequestration was our only chance for across-the-board spending cuts crafted by bipartisan compromise, and our cowardly lawmakers ran away from it like it was a live grenade. Either Boehner or the president's proposals before Christmas would have been preferable because they, at least, contained *some* spending cuts.

430 "I don't get you. You want spending cuts. But you're a big Obama supporter. Seriously, WTF?"

I don't view spending as a partisan issue. Even when the GOP was strong and united, during the Bush presidency, they failed to act as an advocate for fiscal restraint. Now, prominent GOP pols tell us across the board spending cuts are devastating and dangerous, and that the economy will "go up in flames" if spending cuts occur. I don't believe that, and I don't believe we can control our deficits without bipartisan, across the board cuts.

Until the GOP changes its tune, I vote mostly on social issues, where my views more closely align with libertarians and the left. Romney is a moderate, and an intelligent, decent man, but his party and its platform is anathema to me now.
