I am not sure what your are trying to imply, but GW's Farewell Address has to be the most badly misunderstood document of the 18th century - Washington was a pretty aggressive expansionist (he had a long-standing interest in the Ohio Valley that predated the Revolution, and afterwards he sent a number of military expeditions there), and was warning against going to war with Britain in support of the French Revolution, not advocating for isolationism per se.

That quote sounds to me like a man who is contemplating, not recommending. The body of his work is quite the opposite of someone who favors big government. Way back when (the 60s and 70s) he was one of the few voices articulating the case for small government and the need to decide what its legitimate purposes were and what was overreaching. Hence, your quote fits perfectly with that search.

I don't think Will wants HUGE / leviathan government, as the Liberal-Left do. But I think he makes a flawed argument that when conservatives get in power they should use government as a tool to advance other purposes (conservative ideas)than government. I think the purpose of government should always be narrowly focused and defined and this should be the purpose of conservatives in government. They should be able to explain why something should be done (or not done) in the context of Constitutional law.
Most of the last 100 years of American history has been that of stretching the Constitution to meet every whim of every autocratic politician ever elected. Michael Beschloss endorsed Will's book ( as a new Conservative manifesto), which should give anyone a moment of pause.
I don't think Will is evil, a neo-con, a RINO or whatever. He just has the flawed and corrupting idea that when Conservatives get power, they should listen to his ideas and apply them. Just govern within the limits of the law - that's all I am asking for. Be predictable, honest and follow the Constitution.
I'm sick to death of all the clever intellectuals who have my best interests at heart and are willing to use the government to tell me what those are.

C.J. Burch, I think if you read Will's work you'll see that he does this. He regularly does just this - tracing it from the founding principles to today. And his work on judicial restraint is unmatched by any mainstream columnist.
