I have worked around enough Brits to not be enamored of their accent. It doesn't portend superior intelligence to me, it makes me suspicious that bullshit is afoot.
The English think that Americans are all "Yanks", which notion will certainly amuse all the Southrons out here. The English also think that Americans are stupid, ignorant and "insular" (seriously, I heard this exact insult in public school, spoken without irony). This juxtaposition amuses me on account that the English actually created the Yanks and the Southrons as separate people (exiled Roundheads and Cavaliers-by-way-of-Caribbean, respectively, leaving aside the Scots-Irish). So if anyone should know the difference, it is the English. I actually agree that (most) Americans are stupid. But most English are at least as stupid. @75, no there are some genuinely beautiful houses in Portland. (Grimm manages to find a few when they shoot.) The current "British" accent is thought to not even be the original accent. If you want to hear how the British accent sounded in the 1600's, go to Tangier Island, VA. It was remote enough that the accent didn't change much because very few people left or moved into the area.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIZgw09CG9E So the "southern us accent" is much closer to the original British accent than the New England accent. Posted by: MrCaniac at December 29, 2012 10:49 PM (Zd/NW) 180

*** My biggest beef with Idiocracy is that it seems to pin the blame on genetics - the productive don't have kids and the incompetent do. The problem is the culture. OK, I don't do the public much. So a 10 day trip to S America was an eye opener. People in Argentina are a lot more polite that here. There are NO thugs, AKA democrats with hip hop shit. Their kids don't cry or run around like unleashed dogs. It is America 1960, before everyone was only interested in themselves and no one else. I get back to USA, flying out of Newark. I really wanted to puke. EVERYONE was rude. The TSA, the airline staff, the flight attendants. MOSTLY the fucking people. When did we stop having any sense of politeness? Why do people think I want to listen to them talk on their phone? Why do people that buy cheap tickets get upset when they have no space for their carry on. Grown men should not get upset over $50 for luggage. Why do people go out in public looking like they just got out of jail, OK it was Newark, so many halve of them did just get out of jail. Babies? So why can parents in S America keep their fucking kids quiet and no one in the USA can? We are so boned. We are tolerating such anti social behavior that it feeds on it's self. Posted by: Billy Bob, the 1% at December 29, 2012 10:56 PM (wR+pz) My wife and I shake our heads every time we go out to do our shopping on Saturdays. We usually hit the grocery store at about 5pm, and the amount of people we see in their pajamas is fucking unbelievable. Almost as unbelievable was seeing teenagers and young adults in their pj's on Christmas Eve at our church's Midnight service. But sadly, I saw this kind of behavior 20 years ago when a dj I worked with at a radio station would wear the same shirt every day for a week. Not washed, just picked up off the floor and put back on. By Friday, he had crumbs and shit on it from the previous week, and his sloppy attire was definitely a reflection on his sloppy work ethic. I'm watching the movie Che. What a freaking boring movie. Only a real commie like Steven Soderbergh would think anyone would be interested in the minutia of Guevera's life.

Indeed. The new series is way over-orchestrated. It really takes you out of the fantasy world to have the score blasting emotional cues at you throughout the episode.

"And that means military and LE calibers." You are clearly correct about the LE calibers ... the only problem is, which one? They vary more than they did 50 years ago. .357/.38, .44M/.44spc, .40/.357Sig (will a 10mm fire .40?) ... 2 revolvers, 1 auto, 2 if you're willing to try 9mm. I'm inclined to stick with a .45 1911, and maybe see how well swapping in .38 Super, 9mm and other barrels (and magazines) work. Military: 7.62 and 5.56 ... unless you're near a military base, the various Reserve units aren't likely to have much. They have the weapons, but not tens of thousands of rounds. Lugging around a 25mm is problematic ... I'd rather have a reloading setup, various dies, primers, powder and a manual, ... and not waste a lot of brass. This may not be terribly mobile ... but it's a bit more mobile than 5000 rounds ( times 'n' calibers), and allows deals to be made ... which points me towards hunting calibers, like .243, .308, as well as the various military and LE calibers.. Got it and answered! As per your question, it isn't surprising to me that Obama would do this, given O's animosity and outright antagonism towards Israel. The main problem with the plane "gift" isn't so much the planes. Egypt's military, while large, is still rife with corruption and inefficiency particularly in their NCO ranks. Part of the reason for Egypt's early successes in the Yom Kippur war was that Saddat had some success in reforming the Egyptian military NCO corps. Ever since Egypt's defeat, the military never got back that quasi-edge they obtained under Saddat. Furthermore, IAF pilots are vastly superior to Egyptian pilots. The problem is the planes will undoubtedly force Israel to consider Egypt's shiny new toys, (along with Morsi's, shall-we-say, less than warm attitude towards Israel), when planning allocation of military forces for 2013 and on. This may have not been so much of a problem in the past, but there's that little civil-war going on in Syria which could potentially draw the Israelis into an military response, esp if Assad's chemical toys get loosed. 2013 is not shaping up to be a good year for a multitude of reasons. Two problems w/ this. The first is the assumption that almost anyone who voted for Obama would even be reading this. It's gone from preaching to the choir to insulting the choir because no one who's not in the choir is even listening. The second is the idea that anyone under 250/200 thousand is even going to blame Obama, when he travels the Country after Jan 1 shouting to anyone who will listen "I'll lower taxes on the 98% today, if the Republicans will get it to my desk today!" We're never going to win a national election again, until we develop a fact and evidence based electoral strategy. Part of that is seeing how other people see us. The people behind her back out of line when they see what's up, but I, as usual, figure this is gonna be better than the 6 deep lines elsewhere. WRONG! Holy hell. Each transaction takes for fucking ever. Already had my stuff loaded on the belt, so I stayed, and gave the glare. She looked totally upright and able-bodied to me, albeit morbidly obese. Why can't people feed their own GD kids, anymore? Oh, and BTW, the last 6 transactions were for 8 each of strained baby foods. Which would have cost about 5% of the price if she had just bought real food and mashed it up. Oh for fuck's sake.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker Plans for National Domination
In 2004, a little known Illinois State Senator ran for the U. S. Senate. They seat was being vacated by Republican Peter Fitzgerald, who, though not unpopular, quite due to disgust with the local Republican Party leadership. The Republican candidate to replace Fitzgerald was Jack Ryan, whose candidacy imploded due to leaks from sealed divorce records. Combined with a well received speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, Barack Obama, a state Senator without any real accomplishments, was able to launch himself into the Presidency. Today, we have the same fair warning about another far-left extremist who could nonetheless appeal to the majority of voters: Newark Mayor Cory Booker. Important safety tip for those going out on New Years Eve from a friend of mine who is a State Trooper. When you are on a divided highway at night, stay in the right lane, do not stay in the passing lane. I hope there aren't any drunk assholes driving then. Posted by: Sassy at December 30, 2012 12:36 AM (VthfI) Plenty of drunks out at noon on a Monday. I meet my mom for lunch every week, and at one of the places we eat there are always a group of older women having a few glasses of wine with lunch, and these are big glasses of wine, and women in their 60's and 70's. Working with and having alcoholics in my family opened my eyes as to how many drunks are on the road at 10am. Posted by: MrCaniac at December 30, 2012 12:41 AM (Zd/NW) 434
almost every drunk driver fatality he sees are from the drunk going down the road in the wrong direction without his headlights on. By the time you see him/her, it's too late.
Posted by: MrCaniac at December 30, 2012 12:33 AM (Zd/NW) We actually had this happen to us a year or two ago. Scary shit! Lucky hubby had his wits about him, and we got in the right lane in time! I don't know how you could possibly be that drunk. Oh, wait. People are stupid, even without the alcohol and darkness. So not really that surprising. I'm thinking Piers may have been told that his
contract won't be renewed. His "multiyear" contract began in January 2011, so "multiyear" may mean 2 years, and with the turnover at the top of CNN, they may want to make a clean break with him. Posted by: MrCaniac at December 30, 2012 12:27 AM I have a hunch that's why Piers wrote that. Speed Six and the almost identical GP-100 (many parts LOOK like they should interchange), both in .357: strong recommendation. No experience with the Redhawk or the Super Redhawk but their reputations are quite high. Not a fan of single action; I'd rather not have to use one. No experience with the automatics, but their reputations are quite good. Posted by: Arbalest at December 30, 2012 01:04 AM (q9m86) 473

Posted by: Sassy at December 30, 2012 12:44 AM (VthfI) One of the last times I went out partying on New Year's Eve was about 22 years ago. I was double dating with another couple and he was driving. He made the turn onto a divided highway but didn't make it to the correct way, he went the wrong way, but he realized in about 20 feet into it and drove across the median to get to the other side. Since that night, if we go out, I don't drink at all, and we are at home by about 11pm. Sorry if I freaked you out, but in the last few years, I have had to start doing all the defensive driving techniques that I was taught 30+ years ago. People have gotten real bad driving especially ignoring traffic lights, stop signs, and "directional arrows" painted on the pavement and on signs at stoplights. Dems have been in control of my city for about 40 years, they were in control of my state for most of my life, and have been in control in DC for about half of my life. Well...since its just me in here. *toe in water* I saw a show yesterday called The United States of Bacon. Wow. Had to change up the dinner plans. And I have been neglectIng the Kroger card at the pump. Had to fill up the other day and used it. I paid 99 cents a gallon. Bill was $15.65 for a full fill up. Remember those days? Evening Saturday, sctually Sunday morning lurker, It's been a while since I paid $.99 a gallon for gas. We dipped below $3 for about a week and are up to $3.40 now. On another note, I used Yahoo to search for doorbells a couple days ago and by coincidence I am seeing doorbells advertised when I sign in to AOS. HMMMM! Curious and curiouser. Posted by: Saturday Night Lurker at December 30, 2012 02:47 AM (LM9t5) Did almost the same thing today, but I only got the gas for $1.35. It has been many years since the gas digits were moving at the same speed as the dollar digits. $25 bucks to gas up the Grand Cherokee felt awfully good. We have gotten to the point where we go to Kroger and get the gift cards for dinners, shopping, and other things so that we get the 4X gas points. That was how we were able to get the $1.80 a gallon off this month. Used the cards for Christmas shopping and Christmas gifts. Posted by: MrCaniac at December 30, 2012 03:00 AM (Zd/NW) 548

Not everyone gets to witness the death of an empire. In my lifetime, I've seen the final nail driven into the British Empire's coffin, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the USA effectively switch places with the Soviet Union. Posted by: @PurpAv at December 30, 2012 05:38 AM (hc3eM) 575

1. Japan has been able to pull off this trick since about 1990. They have a debt to gdp ratio of about 200%. The point being, the Fed will probably be able to work their magic for a lot longer than people expect. 2. The US has quite a bit to fall back on: the USG has about 650 million acres of land it can sell, over 8 thousand tons of gold, some 750 million bbls of oil. 3. Not being the worlds reserve currency might not be all that bad. If the US wasn't the reserve currency, trade flowsto the USfrom ROW would be more balanced. I'm skeptical though that it would happen without opec seriously moving in that direction, which would include liquidating US based and US dollar denominatedassets in their sovereign wealth funds. Posted by: RichatUF at December 30, 2012 05:46 AM (rJdKc) 578
Butters-
It is less than meets the eye. It'll be back. @PurpAv- Ihave a searching criticism of that. One the US hasn't "switched" places with the USSR. The USSR exported terror and misery in full measure worldwide and its collapse was one of the best things to happen to this world. The world is still suffering from the wounds of Cold War. The US is going through a period of economic and political weakness as we have done though other periods of our history. Just because the fashionable elite opinion today is decline and weakness doesn't mean that we can't or won't change course. Posted by: RichatUF at December 30, 2012 05:56 AM (rJdKc) 579
RichatUF, but Japan isn't the world economic leader. they have been able to pull off their QEnonsense trick because fewer people care what happens to them than what happens to us.

but that is the direction that we are headed, unfortunately. these liberal idiots who are in charge, they simultaneously believe that they can (a) grow government without limit, "for the children", (b) that we aren't an exceptional nation, but that (c) we are somehow immune from falling into tyranny from a leviathan government. if that were a computer program, it would not compile.
