The Passing Of General H. Norman Schwarzkopf Jr., USArmy

A New Jersey kid, the son of Ruth Allen and Herbert Norman. His name was later amended to H. Norman. And in his time, after serving in Vietnam where he earned three Silver Stars, a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, he stayed with the Army and rose to greatness.

This is an except of his service (granted, Wiki, but sourced) about leadership and taking care of the men in your command.

In Vietnam in March 1970, Schwarzkopf was involved in rescuing men of his battalion from a minefield. He had received word that men under his command had encountered a minefield on the notorious Batangan Peninsula, and rushed to the scene in his helicopter, as was his custom while a battalion commander, in order to make his helicopter available. He found several soldiers still trapped in the minefield. Schwarzkopf urged them to retrace their steps slowly. Still, one man tripped a mine and was severely wounded but remained conscious. As the wounded man flailed in agony, the soldiers around him feared that he would set off another mine. Schwarzkopf, also wounded by the explosion, crawled across the minefield to the wounded man and held him down (using a "pinning" technique from his wrestling days at West Point) so another could splint his shattered leg. One soldier stepped away to break a branch from a nearby tree to make the splint. In doing so, he too hit a mine, which killed him and the two men closest to him, and blew an arm and a leg off Schwarzkopf's artillery liaison officer. Eventually, Schwarzkopf led his surviving men to safety, by ordering the division engineers to mark the locations of the mines with shaving cream.

They don't hand out Silver Stars for showing up.

RIP General. And Godspeed.

45 General H. Norman Schwarzkopf knew that to win it meant breaking shit and allowed those he commanded to do so.>>Battle of 73 Easting, 26 – 27 February 1991
A decisive victory for the American and British forces in their Desert
Storm operation in Iraq, the Battle of 73 Easting refers to the conflict
that took place on the north-south line of coordinates on the military
map. In a truly devastating show of strength from the Coalition, the
Iraqi forces were overwhelmed and overcome. The main part of the battle
involved the US 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, which attacked and
completely destroyed the Iraqi 18th Mechanized Brigade and 37th Armored
Brigade. During the battle — one of the most studied in modern history —
the Iraqis lost over 160 tanks to the American and British forces.>>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_73_Easting

48 This was a "Man's Man" of a general, the nature of Grant, Pershing and Patton! Not a weaslely, boot-licker like his contemporary, Colin Powell, our age's very own Gen McClellan.
If Stormin' Norman was in control of the JCS in '91, Baghdad would have been taken with little or no resistance, obviating the need for W's efforts in '02; there would be far fewer issues in the ME to deal with today. The Kurds would be chugging along even more than they are now and whole bunch of bad things might have been avoided, starting. perhaps, with the electionof Rapist-in-Chief, Willie Jeff.
Damn! History is a cruel teacher about the absolute need to elevate people with guts, rather than the smooth-talker/staff types who always seem to win out.

I know I'm going to catch a bit of flack for this, but I'm going to put Washington with generals like Ho Chi Minh.

He defeated the best army in the world with a seeming ragtag order of battle, but with a undeniable thirst for the outcome that he wanted. He never gave up even though all odds were against him. It was the political pressure put on the British king that to hold the colonies would be too high a price to pay, not only monetarily, but in blood. It was the same with Vietnam. And India (again, the British). I'm sure there's others but I haven't had enough coffee yet.

196 Went to a gun show this week. Paid $10 just to get in, saw a bunch of used dirty looking, long-ass metal ARs for $2400.

Found boxes of winchester 556 for $15 a box. Got excited, bought 3, then realized they were boxes of 20. $51 after tax for 60 rounds.

Got in a bad mood and left

Gun shows are a fucking rip off right now. Also, everyone working there was a dick. Guess they hate seeing ammunition fly off the shelves at inflated panic prices.

So glad I got my brand new AR for $800 a few months ago. Perfect timing.

Both believed vehemently in their causes.

It's one of the things I point out when I find myself in a conversation about a hot civil war. Before one commits himself to any cause, he has to ask himself three questions:

1. What exactly am I fighting against?

2. What exactly am I fighting for?

3. Am I willing to put myself in harm's way and possibly become horribly wounded or die for my cause?

Private sales, sales between private individuals, not dealers, in most states do not require a background check.

Think about it. How could you? My brother wants to sell me his gun cause he needs some meth? What he's going to do a background check? How could he? He's not a dealer. ATF and FBI don't let individuals call up and ask about people.

Also, background check cost money and only a guy with the code can call one in.

273 As a placeholder, I'd like to note that General Schwarzkopf's ancestry is explicitly German, and that he never was dishonored for it. Chester W. Nimitz was of obvious Germanic descent, too, and he has an aircraft carrier named after him. As does Eisenhower.

How far we have come from the days of Woodrow Wilson.

They don't hand out Silver Stars for showing up.

-Dave in Texas

In Lyndon Baines Johnson's case, that's exactly what happened. How did a Reserve Naval Officer passenger about a B-26 become the recipient of the Silver Star when the crew members of the aircraft stated it returned to base with generator problems and was never attacked?

The Silver Star is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy force, and the only enemy Johnson ever encountered was republicans. Both LBJ and Jon Kerry are frauds.

278 The General's father, the one who founded the NJ state police, was one of the two master-spies who unsettled the first revolutionary government in Iran and put the Shah in power. It kind of figures that the most successful spies in US history would be named Norman and Kermit.

When Iranians go off about the US running everything, that is the incident they have in mind.

279 Grrrrr, with ESPN "owning" all the bowl games I have to travel 1/2 HR + to hang out at a bar and watch em.
Gonna do that for K-State but...

280 Oh, and Gen Schwarzkopf was one hell of a trap-shooter, in retirement.
He had a Beretta SO5, over/under. Beretta also made him a personalized SO6.

281 "In my opinion, the NRA has gone the way of the AARP,it's all about hawking high intrest credit cards ansd the like."

NRA for me lost all credibility when they got palsy with Harry Reid.

Former NRA member. Not one thin dime from me after that Reid business. Not one polished penny. Ever again.

Gun Owners of America. What the NRA wish they were.

282 They may not hand out Silver Stars for just showing up but they certainly hand out Nobel Peace Prize's for showing up-oh, and being of the correct political ilk. Just ask our SCOAMF Prez'dent.

285 Leaders lead, from the front, by example.

Which is why there are so few old leaders. As the saying goes "There are old soldiers, there are bold soldiers; but there are few old, bold soldiers."

Godspeed you, sir.

289 They don't hand out silver stars for showing up? Clearly you've never served in the military, go chat with Pat Tilman and see what he has to say about this. The military is as bureaucratic and political as any other part of the government.

290 BTW, just to add, I don't actually know anything about Schwarzkopf, may have been a great man, so don't misunderstand my remarks. That one line just rubbed me the wrong way. A lot of clown awards have been handed out.

For what it's worth, my dad went dove-hunting several times with Gen. Schwartzkopf in Fayoum, just outside of Cairo, along with Frank Wisner, our Ambassador to Egypt at the time. Says he was a very regular guy, more so than most generals - a hail-fellow-well-met, and a pretty good shot with a 12-gauge. Soldiersaccompanying him, a major and a lieutenant, were also provided shotguns, assigned positions(blinds)and allowed to hunt, which wasn't common for "dignitary's "companions on these dove hunts. My dad also said he was a hell of a lot bigger in person than he looked on TV. RIP General.
