Lefty Writer George Monibiot: I Went to Occupy to Put an End to the Evil Regime of Private Property, and I Got Very Mad When People Stole My Stuff

It's always that way.

A group of us had occupied a piece of land on St George’s Hill in Surrey, in the hope of establishing a “common treasury for all.” Our aim had been to rekindle interest in land reform. It had been going well – we had placated the police, started to generate plenty of public interest – when two young lads with brindled Staffordshire bull terriers arrived in an old removals van. Everyone was welcome at the site and, as they were travellers, one of the groups marginalised by the concentration of control and ownership of land in Britain, we went out of our way to accommodate them. They must have thought they had died and gone to heaven.

Almost as soon as they arrived they began twocking stuff. A radio journalist left his equipment in his hire car. They smashed the side window. Someone saw them bundling the kit, wrapped in a stolen sleeping bag, into their lorry. There was a confrontation – handwringing appeals to reason on one side, pugnacious defiance on the other – which eventually led to the equipment being handed back. They wound their dogs up, making them snap and snarl at the other occupiers. At night they roamed the camp, staffies straining at the leash, cans of Special Brew in their free hands, shouting “fucking hippies, we’re going to burn you in your tents!”

We had no idea how to handle them without offending our agonised liberal consciences. They saw this and exploited it ruthlessly.

Sounds like these boys actually practiced what Monibiot only wanted to preach about.

They were "travellers", a group of people that are ostracized in the UK.

"Travellers" is a more polite name for "gypsies". Grifters, con men, petty thieves.

These guys like Monibiot unlearn centuries of accumulated social knowledge just to prove that they are "good" by their own invented paradigm. The travellers are what they are; good, bad or indifferent.
Monibiot and his gaggle of foolsare worse because they have had the advantage of an education and should know better, yet they throw it all away.

The lessons of the last 100 years of what happens when real socialism/communism is applied are lost on them. This time it will be different. Right.

Because the regressive left believes that if only they EDUCATE people better, and BELIEVE really hard, then bad people will start doing good things because they know IN THEIR HEARTS that they should.

In other words, the cat shouldn't eat the mother mouse because it will orphan all the baby mice and that would be bad. So the left would want to re-educate the cat that it should starve while the mouse and its family thrives, because that's supposedly the GOOD thing to do.

Irish Travellers not Gypsies. Different cultures.

Irish Travellers (Irish: an lucht siúil) or Pavee are a traditionally nomadic people of ethnic Irish origin, who maintain a set of traditions[1][2] and a distinct ethnic identity. Although predominantly English speaking, some also use Shelta and other similar cants. They live mostly in Ireland as well as having large numbers in the United Kingdom and in the United States

150 I will tell you a true gypsy story.

My mother knew all abut gypsies and often would tell stories of them coming into the downtown department store where she worked at Christmas during her college years.

So, when I was living in Europe as a military wife I got a book about gypsies out of the base library and learned all sorts of things about them, including that they don't like monkeys. (This may be because they come from India originally, as pep said, and Hanuman the monkey god may be considered unlucky to them or something.)

So, my dad had a heart attack and was in the ICU, where the only other patients was an old gypsy man. His entire family had camped out in the ICU waiting room, about 30 people. With children.

They tried to make it difficult for us to stay there. They made crude noises on purpose, told their children we were policemen who had guns and would shoot them, trashed up the place, etc. etc.

Coincidentally, there was a Life magazine with a big picture of a gorilla on the front, right in the middle of the stack of magazines.

So when they all left to go meet with the doctor, I put the gorilla magazine on the floor by the door.

They never came into the waiting oom again! Instead they all went down the hall and camped out in a lobby area by the elevators!

Ta-da!

There, you see?! It's the Bacon Inquisition!

I prefer pork bacon, but I always freak out about the fat content and to be blatantly honest, I can never get it to crisp up quite right. *~* I can cook just about anything under the sun, but I cannot master bacon.

You'd think it'd be basic, but it's actually really hard to make good, crispy bacon... there's this terribly narrow window of ideal crisp versus chew. It's a pain to hit that mark...

Cheat.

I have a 16" Rival electric skillet (probably $20 from Walmart about 15 years ago). Put it just a hair above warm and lay the rashers in it and let it sit from thirty minutes up to a few hours.

The bacon cooks chewy, the water evaporates, nothing splatters, the house smells great, and you are left with awesome grease.

The cooked, chewy rashers can now be crisped over fairly high heat. What remains can be ziplocked and tossed in the fridge for quick cooking/eating through the week. Don't pat-off the grease from the strips before you bag them. It helps the bacon stay fresh and greases the pan for the eggs you cook after crisping the bacon.

Cooking bacon in the microwave makes it really crispy...if you cook it between layers of paper towels.
It comes out crispy and dry, because the paper towels blot it as it cooks.

You have to take care not to let it get overcooked though, when using the microwave.

Personally, I like it cooked in a skillet...to get a desired crispy-chewy texture.

So true! The self esteem movement has destroyed more in one generation in this country than the Frankfurt School was able to in three. Oh Timmy it's okay you tried so here's your ninth place trophy and a platonic ass out hug. When reality hits you in the face it is never your fault. Josh Waitzkin in The Art of Learning details two types of learners: incremental and entity. Incremental learners are problem solvers so when a bump in the road is reached they figure out how to overcome through the application of knowledge and experience. Pre Obama America if you will. The entity learners are those who have just been smart or told they are smart their entire lives so they never really had to learn how to problem solve or apply knowledge. So whenever an obstacle is reached it becomes an existential crisis because obstacles are not something theyI encounter. Either through natural talent or by being praised for their inability to succeed they have failed to learn how to overcome so when reality hits they throw a tantrum and stomp their feet and blame everyone but themselves. Dammit mommy told me I was special and unique so the world needs to accommodate my IBS blah blah.

I never quite understood that. If I go to the DMV in the ritzy area, there are like all of 2 people working there, and the place is empty, everyone is polite and immediately ready to help you.

Go to the DMV in a mixed income area, they have 75 people working, 300 people waiting as a permanent fixture, a 10 minute line to get in the door and take a number, and a 30 minute wait.

I go to the DMV very rarely - only when I have to - but every time I go the place is packed solid. WTF are all these people doing at the DMV all the time?

It's easy. You just get the skillet to near flash-fire temp, throw in the bacon wearing safety goggles, gloves, and a leather apron, look for the yellowy-brown color change in the fat, and turn off the heat or pull the skillet off the fire before your house burns down.
