Newspaper Tries To Intimidate Gun Owners

The White Plains newspaper The Journal-News has decided to produce an interactive map of every licensed pistol permit holder in three New York counties.

The map indicates the addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Each dot represents an individual permit holder licensed to own a handgun — a pistol or revolver. The data does not include owners of long guns — rifles or shotguns — which can be purchased without a permit. Being included in this map does not mean the individual at a specific location owns a weapon, just that they are licensed to do so.

The information is public, however there is no legitimate reason for them to consolidate it and put it on an interactive map. Well, no other reason than intimidation. The newspaper doesn't offer an explanation for why they created this interactive map.

This is bitter, spiteful and dangerous. This puts the gun owners in great danger. Do you live in New York? Do you want a gun? Well rob these homes to get one. When that eventually happens or someone is killed as a result of this stunt, the newspaper won't be held to account. The editorial staff and reporters won't care at all.

Fortunately, a blogger at For What Its Worth, decided that two can play that game. He found the publisher's address, pictures of the inside of her home on Zillow, and her personal likes and dislikes culled from her credit card records.

It should be noted that all of that information is public. It will be hard not to laugh when she accuses bloggers and gun nuts of intimidation.

7 >>Fine by me. Send criminals to a well armed home.

Here's the thing, criminals always want to get their hands on guns. They' can't buy them in stores.

A lot of guns used in crimes or murders are stolen guns. So let's say many of these permit holders own multiple guns. Well, all a criminal has to do is wait for that homeowner to leave and then ransack the house.

You can't take all your guns with you every time you leave your house.

The map also comes in handy for potential burglars who want to know who isn't armed when they go for a score or home invasion

17 Has happened before, will happen again.

Should publish the addresses and *incomes* of the Journal's employees in return. Good start, though.

It's "ideological public shaming," they feel so secure in their dominance of the lines of communication that they can "shame" other people for disagreeing with them.

Similar to the reasons they're so rabid and offensive when it comes to conservative minorities.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at December 24, 2012 04:52 PM (bxiXv)

18 What the liberals always fail to understand this stuff does. Not only is it that the criminals nowknow who to rob to get a gun but it has removed some of the liberal's protection because crooks know which houses to loot and they don't need to be worried about getting shot.

108 The Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer drove a fine physician to attempt to take his own life a few years ago, then put details of his suicide attempt on the front page.

NBC's David Gregory poo-poos the idea of having armed guards at schools, but sends his own kid to Sitwell Friends, which does have armed guards.

You don't understand: You rednecks and ethnic minorities aren't supposed to have armed guards at your schools. That's so icky. But Viscount Gregory is entitled. But don't worry, it's an aristocracy built completely on merit. It's just a coincidence his kids go to Fancy Overpriced Academy.

They're efficient. Plotting crimes is unnecessary, generates error, increases evidence, etc. The way you get away with shit is do it and leave.

Robbery and burglary are crimes of opportunity, and your unconscious mind is a better opportunistic target selector than "you" are. If you find yourself thinking, "I could rob that guy," or "That house looks good," do it.

If crime is your thing.

Criminals who thought acting out a cop-show plot was a good idea are in prison.

Stupid libs and their unintended consequences. They have now put in danger all the people in homes that do not have a permit as the criminals now know which homes to avoid. Contact Gannett's ethics dept. and let them know: the Com- pany’s Chief Ethics Officer, Barbara W. Wall (at 703-854-6000 or bwall(at)gannett.com). You may also seek advice by leaving a telephone message or sending an e-mail message to the Company’s ethics hotline at 800-234-4206 (in the United Kingdom, the hotline number can be reached
by dialing free 0-808-234-8157) or gciethics(at)flynn-law.com.

150 The fols on the list should take this as a opportunity to connect/unite. Our colonial ancestors formed Committees of Safety to protect themselves from attack. In fact Paul Revere was a member of such a committee when he sounded the alarm that the British were coming to confiscate their weapons.....

151 I think that releasing "public" but personal information is vile.

Which is, of course, why we're all upset. And why turning it around on the person responsible (and we're sure this is really her, right?) is entirely appropriate.

For what it's worth... my husband and I are very pro-gun ownership though we don't own any. I'm seriously thinking of getting a handgun in the next month or two. And while I'm going to get the training available at the gun range in town (probably buy the gun there as well) and may eventually work my way up to the concealed carry course and permits... I'm starting to think that registering and permitting is evil.

None of these people would have their privacy violated in this way if they weren't on a government list.

And if a dumb ass newspaper can use that information in this way, how *else* might it be used?

Posted by: Synova at December 24, 2012 06:36 PM (7/PU+)

152 Registering and permitting may not be inherently evil. It just enables evil.

Posted by: A Balrog of Morgoth at December 24, 2012 06:39 PM (NL15p)

153 The 2nd Amendment gives us THE RIGHT to bear arms. Not the privilege. Registering and permitting turns the right into a privilege that can be taken away. It would be no different than requiring a govt permit to speak your mind freely.

Posted by: Tasmaniac at December 24, 2012 07:25 PM (X2M6S)

158 The thing that I find so vile is that these MFM cockholsters publish this info in the hopes that gun owners will be shunned by their friends family and coworkers. They are attacking us in our personal relationships and family lives not in the public sphere. I expect that some of these folks will lose their jobs once their leftist employers find out about their gun permits. Of course, the gun permit will not be cited as the reason why, but you can be sure it'll happen.
