More Modern Christmas Songs

Now is the time every year when we take a moment to enjoy the Christmas songs that don't get played to death on the radio and commercials but ought to be.

Get Ready For $8/Gal Milk

Lost in the political standoff between the Obama administration and Congressional Republicans over the budget is a virtually forgotten impasse over a farm bill that covers billions of dollars in agriculture programs. Without last-minute Congressional action, the government would have to follow an antiquated 1949 farm law that would force Washington to buy milk at wildly inflated prices, creating higher prices in the dairy case. Milk now costs an average of $3.65 a gallon.

Higher prices would be based on what dairy farm production costs were in 1949, when milk production was almost all done by hand. Because of adjustments for inflation and other technical formulas, the government would be forced by law to buy milk at roughly twice the current market prices to maintain a stable milk market.

Well maybe the American people getting to experience all the Federal laws will encourage some changes.

The Infamous Star Wars Special

Here is the full length version of the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special that was shown on CBS on November 17, 1978. It has never been shown on TV again since then nor ever released on VHS or DVD. It was so horrible that George Lucas won't even acknowledge it to this day, though at one convention he is quoted as saying that, "If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it."

You can read the full details about here. Suffice it to say that it combines the worst parts of Star Wars with the worst of 70's variety shows and is generally considered the worst two hours of television ever. And yes, there is a song and dance number with Bea Arthur and wookies.

On the 2010 television program Times Talk, New York Times columnist David Carr asked Carrie Fisher about the special; she said that she made George Lucas give her a copy of the special in exchange for recording DVD commentary for the Star Wars films. She added that she shows it at parties, "mainly at the end of the night when I want people to leave."

Everyone should watch it once. But only a fool watches it twice.

Lesser Known Christmas Specials

Many were horrible and some were pretty good but almost everything got their own Christmas special during the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Including Bloom County:

Another comic strip gets a rare dose of animated life in A Wish for Wings That Work, which takes Berkeley Breathed's Opus character from his various comic strips and puts him in a tale where he faxes Santa a letter with a wish for wings that let him fly - although he of course finds his own penguin-abilities are useful enough when the time comes. It's not as cutting as some of Breathed's strips, but it still has a darker, edgier tone than most Christmas specials, complete with the vile Bill the Cat as Opus' sidekick.

The U.S. Dept. of Cat Care

The Earnest Hemingway House in Key West, FL is famous for its feral 6-toed cats. And this somehow deeply concerns the Department of Agriculture:

The dispute began in 2003 after a museum volunteer and cat lover filed a complaint with the department after an aggressive cat wandered from the property. The agency concluded that the museum needed to follow federal regulations on exhibiting animals. But the museum argued that the cats are born and bred at the house, that they seldom wander beyond the grounds and that it is Mr. Hemingway's legacy - not the cats - that serve as the main attraction.

...But the agency disagreed. It sent in an animal behavioral specialist to index the cats and analyze the situation. Undercover agents were then sent in 2005 and 2006 to observe the cats and surreptitiously photograph their movements. One photo shows a gray cat sitting on the pavement. It carries the caption: "Picture of six-toed cat taken in restaurant/bar at end of Whalton Lane and Duval. May or may not be a Hemingway Home and Museum cat."

Sounds like the Key West office of the Dept. of Agriculture could use some sequestration.

Dr. Helen on Not Taking It Anymore

I wonder how much the media and the liberal hatred of Republicans plays into the current Republican angst. It's almost as if Republicans are the new Jews of yesteryear where any vile dirty thing can be said about them with little blowback and less truth. The media blames Republicans for every ill that comes down the pike. A storm in the Northeast? Damn Republicans caused it. You aren't making the money you once did? A Republican did that to you. A violent young man kills 27? That Republican sitting next to you is somehow to blame. That's what the media wants people to believe and because people are eager for a scapegoat, many listen without critical thought.

I am always surprised at those people who consider themselves intelligent, well-meaning "empathetic" types who think nothing of tossing out some nasty crack about Republicans -whether at the holiday table, in the classroom or in line at the supermarket. It puts people on the opposite side of the political fence on the defense and makes for an antagonistic atmosphere, one that is growing more hostile by the day. I used to think that people should try to be "tolerant" and not get too upset by the jabs. I was wrong.

Here is my advice: rather than just take it and fill out a poll saying you are demoralized, fight back. Even if you feel uncomfortable, even if you might wreck the holiday party, and even if it means you might be open to hostility like you have never seen before, speak up. Or, if you don't want to talk politics, just say so and say that this type of talk makes you feel uncomfortable. If you are with friends or family and they don't understand this, how important can they be in your life? If your well-being is that unimportant to them, why bother? Perhaps next year, you need to spend the holidays in Barbados if you can or at least in the company of those who don't see your politics as evil.

Ammo will be the issue.

They will play hell confiscating guns, and guns endure, but ammo (for most folks) requires replenishment. They won't take our guns, they will just attempt to make them obsolete.

65 "The Airing of Grievances"

Going to be a lot of those once people finish reading the Boston Glob story in the sidebar about how the Romney campaign worked on the inside.

Although it amply reconfirms something I've said several times, which is that even if the hapless Romney had won, the only thing for conservatives to cheer would have been the Obama loss, not the Romney presidency to follow.

The article reveals that Romney wanted, as campaign chief, Mike Murphy. For those of you who aren't from the People's Soviet Socialist Republic of Commiefornia, let me simply note that Mike Murphy was instrumental in installing Ahnuld der Groppenfuhrer as the Governor of our state.

And the sad remnant of conservatives still remaining in Kahleefornia were then horribly disappointed when the plastic Austrian android turned out to be the most pathetic RINO squish ever. Never seriously challenging the state's arrogant public employee unions. Doing nothing about the avalanche of illegal aliens. Signing sweeping gun control and global warming crap into law. Ugh.

Knowing that Romney wanted Murphy, who delivered such a trainwreck of liberal Republicanism in CA, should give you new insight into how Romney would have handled himself as President. As a disastrous RINOcrat.

Those questions also work wonders for responding to when are you having kids, why don't you date and other such rudeness. It's one of the few areas in which I'm passive aggressive instead of aggressive aggressive since apparently it's rude or something to punch people in the face in the church lobby. Not that I ever have though there are times when it's been touch and go.

Seriously, when the hell did it become acceptable at *church* to assume that a Woman of A Certain Age such as myself who is a. single and b. childless is still trying to come up with a way to have a kid? What the hell! Dude, the state of my uterus is not a topic of casual conversation.

69 As I've said before, instead of going up $10 or $20 per month, my health insurance is going up $148 per month. I blame everyone who voted for that bastard. I'm just waiting for some liberal to open their damn mouth.

****

Moving from active to retired/disabled employee status caused my premium to go from $47 per month to $250. And they don't pay one penny until I spend $1600 and don't pay 100% until I spend $4k.

So, before they pay one dime, I am already out a minimum of $1850. And then it's only 80%.

If my rates go any higher I'm going to have to take out a loan to pay for it.

86 24 On the ammo front the store shelves are getting wiped out. EPA wants to ban lead in bullets, DOJ wants to declare all other bullet materialsto be"armor piercing". UN agenda will make powder in cartridges decay over time, so it will have a shelf life before it turns inert. Don't have to ban elephants if you make feeding them impossible... so the smart money is investing in ammo now. And those folks who feel all superior because they reload need to recognize that this will affect ammo components as well. No matter what happens there is no way ammo prices will go down before Jan. 20. .223 had gone up 30% in 5 weeks since the election and that was before this shooting runup. I told everyone to buy Nov. 6 and if you did you made money. I'm telling you to buy now. As long as you don't overpay you'll be able to profit from the inevitable appreciation. If you buy at Walmart you won't overpay. Go see what they have on the shelf that you can use or is popular and can be sold next month or beyond. Firearms prices have doubled in the last 9 days. Go to the site I suggested and buy at the old prices. That's why I suggested it. I just bought approx. 600 rds. of 12 ga. at Wallyworld. Hold or sell that's a sharp play. Buying in bubbles works like this: you have to think about things enough to foresee what's GOING to blow up. Most firearms already have, if you can get 'em at the old price you def should. If not don't bother unless you have to. Ammo has risen but nowhere as much as it will. When panic buyers have been priced out of the firearm market (soon) they're gonna turn to ammo and inflate that bubble. Use this instability to get prepared yourself AND make large money.

However, I have watched that special every year with my children, and then my grandchildren. Now when I hear it on the Christmas station it makes me happy and also puts me in a great Christmas mood, reminding me of when my children were young.

So you can learn to appreciate things that are unfamiliar, and God bless him for giving us some different music!

Actually Ann Landers had great advice on nosy people who ask these type of questions...."Don't you want to have children?" you say: "Why do you ask?" put them on the defensive. I have done this many times and it is sickly enjoyable to watch people fluster around when it is turned back on them.

Talking/arguing with libs although maddening can also be enjoyable. Just keep your cool and state facts. Then you get the free entertainment of watching them blow up and start calling you names. They have child like minds that want to live in a world as they see it - not as it actually is. Facts are like garlic to a vampire with them. I fight back and refuse to be demoralized by these grown up infants.

I decided to have my uvula lopped in half and my tonsils removed earlier this year versus going on a CPAP. A tonsillectomy kinda sucks at 37 but I decided that it's better to get over the pain within a month rather than depend upon the availability of a machine to keep me from suffocating at night. That, and I flop around like a grounded flounder while I sleep.

158 WE found out what caused my friend to throw up and crap blood. Hepatitis C. I have been careful while cleaning it up, lots of bleach and rubber gloves. To give a more complete background the guy shot a cop when he was a kid. The cop lived and L spent the next 25 years in jail. he got out and tried to re-establish his life. He was living in a rental house next to one of my warehouses. I figured he had been in jail due to his tatoos. I occasionally spoke to him. One small bit of a conversation we had stuck with me. He was sitting on the stoop and I asked what he was doing? It was a beautiful Spring day and he replied, "He was enjoying the day." I read into it he was enjoying freedom and the ability to enjoy the day. Tentatively I began to work with him. I paid him to cut the grass and occasional chores. He found work with a temp service and that grew into a permanent 3rd shift job. He was always grateful to me and said I gave him so much. I replied I gave hime an opportunity ti "EARN" his self respect. He said that was more than others would give him. He lost the job as the economy tanked. He lost his rental and I let him move into my warehouse as a groundskeeper. He has been very helpful. Not perfect but helpful. He never drinks. He isn't into drugs and says he never has been. I figure dirty needles used getting his tattoos has finally caught up to him. Had he known about it much of the damage could have been avoided or postponed. Now it is too far gone. He will need to go to a specialist but, if I read it right, back pressure and weakened cell walls in the liver are causing internal bleeding. He isn't jaundiced yet but his liver numbers are up. He hade a 50/50 chance of bleeding out the other night. He had an episode also when in the hospital. The outlook isn't good for the guy.I'll keep you posted. Hard to believe I can feel sympathy for a guy that screwed up his life that bad but I do.

The sleep clinic in which I had my positive apnea diagnosis was little more than a CPAP storefront. They were pushing for the CPAP treatment (which is understandable) but I went back to my ENT asking for the surgical option.

Normally, the ENT will completely lop off one's uvula and carve-out one's palate in order to create more breathing area. I instructed him that I didn't want my uvula removed after I had been told first-hand of those having the same surgery being unable to drink from a water fountain. He did note that my tonsils were large enough to obstruct air flow so I had no problem getting those yanked. Plus, tonsiliths are pretty nasty and had bugged me since childhood. Recovery from the tonsillectomy really did knock me out worse than I had expected.

Evidently, they are like baseball players then. I love baseball, but I've always wondered: do players suddenly start producing massive amounts of spit the second they get out on the field? Is the ability to produce and hawk up gallons of spit as essential to baseball players as great hand-eye coordination? You see these guys who are making $100 million spraying out jet streams of spit every 5 seconds or so - the base pads must be slick with spit by the 6th inning.

Worked fucking *wonders*!

I love my Uncle but I swear to gawd his wife is an incredibly malignant stupid bitch.

My Dad has been in the hospital, getting new knees.

She left an incredibly self-centered * mean* message to my Dad last Friday.

She did't know what was going on. Not like she cares...

I got super drunk last Friday, called her Saturday and told my Aunt Jan what I have often thought of her.

Made me crazy when she left a nasty phone message to my Dad, that I picked up, when he was in the HOSPITAL!

I probably should not have Called her back on Saturday.

Not drunk.

But then again...

Why does't ANYONE ever call her out on her nastiness!

This has been going on for DECADES!

Her own children recognize it!

I shouldn't have been as drunk as I was when I called her out.

Everyone loves Uncle, we all put up with his wife because...?

320 re: "You do know that Bob Dylan recorded a Christmas album a couple years ago, right?"

Percentage-wise, I don't like much of Dylan's music, but I truly admire his vocation: making Bob Dylan fans buy records they hate. That one's a doozy. He hasn't done a "Suck it, you me-loving chumps" that harsh since his bar-rock gospel albums.

The guy could write a solid set of new Christmas songs over the course of a few weeks, sit down with his guitar in front of a single mic for a couple hours, and drop a universally admired "timeless classic," no sweat. And he knows it.

So he makes a horrific drunk-uncle Christmas karaoke album--with mid-'60s easy listening arrangements, to really stick it to the fans he's had longest.

I love that guy.

I can't bear to click on the Boston Globe story or read about how one of the sons said Romney really didn't want to be president. I mean, that's great. I worked those phones for a candidate that didn't really want it. Nice to know what a complete sucker I was.

326 Have to get this out there. One of my illustrious senators (Babs) proposed stationing National Guard troops in schools to protect the chillun from those evil assault weapons. I recall that someone made a comment about it not being a good idea due to having armed strangers in a school; while true there are even more important reasons to not do this. The first of course is that Boxer is incredibly stupid.
Now, I teach in a fairly rough high school in the LA area. For security we have a couple of deans (who are teachers), a handful of administrators, 3 or 4 security personnel (unarmed, handle student problems), 1 or 2 uniformed LAUSD police officers (stop laughing!) who are based on our campus (actually present ~ 3 days/wk) and a county parole officer (2-3 days/wk). They cover a school that covers about 2 large city blocks, has numerous entry points (official fence hopping areas), a whole bunch of places to hide, etc. I assume you get the picture. The physical plant was built in the '50's.
Adding an armed guard whose only job is to stop an armed intruder is the greatest waste of money I have ever heard of and believe me, you have seen some incredible money wasteage if you work for a public school district! Use that money to add an extra school security person or two, pay for an extra dean. Most of our security problems are vandalism/tagging, drug use/sales and "wandering" (students ditching classes). Our current measures, if augmented, can deal with normal security problems. (Note: the security personnel on campus are not armed or uniformed, but they do a good job dealing with 90+ % of the students problems we face).
Dealing with a school shooter from the outside (the Newtown scenario) would require at least 2-3 conceal carry staff at a school our size, in addition to the armed school police parole officer (if they are on campus during the incident). Still, a determined shooter from outside would probably shoot several students/staff before he/she is stopped.
I would volunteer to carry as long as 1) the district understands that I will not act in a security role other than stopping an outside threat. 2) I am issued a concealed carry permit valid anywhere in the state. 3) I am 100% indemnified by the district if I use my firearm in the specified manner. 4) I am paid for the time I take for training. 5) I receive reimbursement for range ammo. 6) NOBODY ON CAMPUS KNOWS I AM CARRYING, except the principle others who are armed on campus.
Sorry this is so long, I'll try to link to boobie pics next time I post.

Dylan announced he was a born-again Christian in the late 70's. I'm not sure if he still considers himself a Christian. The born-again thing really didn't make sense because it's my understanding that a born-again Christian is someone who was technically Christian, fell away from the faith, and then refound it. (But I'm Catholic, so what do I know? Catholics speak of "lapsed Catholics" and "reverts." Catholics think that anybody baptised and raised Catholic remains Catholic until they formally switch to another faith, although they might be bad Catholics, so the whole born-again business isn't in our vocabulary.)

Nonetheless, Dylan is or was once a Christian, so you can't compare him to Buchanan singing Chanukah songs.

My aunt visited the SF Bay Area a couple of months back and we took her to Muir Woods. She recently got new knees as well. We slowly, while talking and taking in the sights went up along the main trail and came back on one of the other trails. Near the end, nearly back to the cafe/store complex, she was talking about how my cousin had said she probably couldn't walk a mile, and my BH replied: "oh really? You just hiked two."

She was so pleased with herself she nearly danced back to the parking lot.

Those new knees have big, big benefits.

My mother didn't go anywhere on that day, so she doesn't have much to record. She feels she is not fulfilling her obligation to enter some greater data. I cannot get through to her that staying home all day without using her car is as meaningful to Caltrans as any other entry. She cannot accept that being a licensed driver with a fully functional vehicle at his disposal that goes unused on some days is a perfectly useful bit of information.

But the claims proved wildly off the mark, a fact embarrassingly underscored when the high-tech voter turnout system that Romney himself called “state of the art” crashed at the worst moment, on Election Day.

To this day, Romney’s aides wonder how it all went so wrong.

They console each other with claims that the election was much closer than realized, saying that Romney would be president if roughly 370,000 people in swing states had voted differently. Romney himself blamed demographic shifts and Obama’s “gifts”: federal largesse targeted to Democratic constituencies.

But a reconstruction by the Globe of how the campaign unfolded shows that Romney’s problems went deeper than is widely understood. His campaign made a series of costly financial, strategic, and political mistakes that, in retrospect, all but assured the candidate’s defeat, given the revolutionary turnout tactics and tactical smarts of President Obama’s operation.

One of the gravest errors, many say, was the Romney team’s failure, until too late in the campaign, to sell voters on the candidate’s personal qualities and leadership gifts. The effect was to open the way for Obama to define Romney through an early blitz of negative advertising. Election Day polls showed that the vast majority of voters concluded that Romney did not really care about average people.

These failures are now the subject of scrutiny by national GOP officials who say they plan to “reverse engineer” the Romney effort to understand what went wrong. A number of Romney’s top aides stressed in interviews that, while they remain proud of their work, they feel an obligation to acknowledge their numerous mistakes so lessons are learned.

Rich Beeson, the Romney political director who coauthored the now-discredited Ohio memo, said that only after the election did he realize what Obama was doing with so much manpower on the ground. Obama had more than 3,000 paid workers nationwide, compared with 500 for Romney, and hundreds of thousands of volunteers.

“Now I know what they were doing with all the staffs and offices,” Beeson said. “They were literally creating a one-to-one contact with voters,” something that Romney did not have the staff to match.

Republicans, as it happened, had lost track of their own winning formula.

Democrats said they followed the trail blazed in 2004 by the Bush campaign which used an array of databases to “microtarget” voters and a sophisticated field organization to turn them out. Obama won in part by updating the GOP’s innovation.

But losing seemed a remote and unlikely prospect when Romney gathered advisers in Boston and planned the campaign they all believed would put him in the White House.

Private nature

Romney’s inner circle of family and friends understood the candidate’s weakness all too well: He was a deeply private person, with an aversion to revealing too much of himself to the public. They worried that unless the candidate opened up, he would too easily be reduced to caricature, as a calculating man of astounding wealth, a man unable to relate to average folks, a man whose Mormon faith put him outside the mainstream.

Romney’s eldest son, Tagg, drew up a list of 12 people whose lives had been helped by his father in ways that were publicly unknown but had been deeply personal and significant, such as assisting a dying teenager in writing a will or quietly helping families in financial need. Such compelling vignettes would have been welcome material in almost any other campaign. But Romney’s strategists worried that stressing his personal side would backfire, and a rift opened between some in Romney’s circle and his strategists that lasted until the convention. More than being reticent, Romney was at first far from sold on a second presidential run. Haunted by his 2008 loss, he initially told his family he would not do it. While candidates often try to portray themselves as reluctant, Tagg insisted his father’s stance was genuine.

“He wanted to be president less than anyone I’ve met in my life. He had no desire to . . . run,” said Tagg, who worked with his mother, Ann, to persuade his father to seek the presidency. “If he could have found someone else to take his place . . . he would have been ecstatic to step aside. He is a very private person who loves his family deeply and wants to be with them, but he has deep faith in God and he loves his country, but he doesn’t love the attention.”

But the Bears game was massively enjoyable.

Yeah,da Bears need to dump Lovie (who is a big DEF backer anyway, so f him). I have to say, I did develop a respect for Cutler because he came out for Romney. Not at all an easy thing for a Bears player, and I understand he got major sh*t in Chicago because of it.

But generally speaking, every Chicago team deserves to lose for 1,000 years as the punishment for giving us Obama. The curse of the Billy Goat that has bedeviled the Cubs has nothing on the curse of the SCFOAMF.

444 Gnubreed,
Sorry about the principle/principal thing, in my defense I teach science and math.
As far as wanting to be compensated for range time/training: I teach because I enjoy it, I believe it is an important job, I get tremendous satisfaction in seeing some of my kids "get it" and it provides a way to support my family. Note that the last reason I give (and there are more) is related to money.
I do many job-related things on my own time. I help with school athletics (not as a coach, which is compensated), I will spend my lunch hours and after school time tutoring students, supervise student clubs (they have to have an adult staffer present when they meet), etc. I don't mind it, it is part of the profession. If, however, I take on a new role (I don't consider armed security part of teaching) I do expect to be compensated for my time and expenses involved in this new job, not to mention compensated for the danger involved.
If such a program was started by LAUSD (fat chance!) I would volunteer. I served 13 1/2 years active/reserve in the Army. I served in combat (Desert Storm) and on the DMZ in Korea. I was a paratrooper and as such was paid $110/month extra for accepting hazardous duty (jumping out of a functioning aircraft). If I was an authorized concealed carry on campus I will be running to the sound of guns (if that black swan actually happened) and accept that I would be putting myself at great risk. That's OK, I know that my background has prepared me better than most school staff for that kind of situation. All I ask is that I be compensated for my time and expenses incurred preparing for that role.

Even gyms that are doing OK have a fairly high turnover on motorized stuff like treadmills. It's like the turnover on PCs in big corporations. Once the warranty is up they don't want them around anymore, even if they have plenty of life left.

We got a gym model that listed for $5K for about $900 with surprisingly little wear and tear on it. The refurb company that sold it said a typical family would take a month to put on the kind of wear the same unit would receive in a day at a busy gym, so the refurb outfit can afford to give their own warranty on the unit.

It may not be the best choice for a home, though. I was a bit surprised when my sister bought it. The old one I bought about 12 years ago ($299 at Best Buy IIRC) took up a lot less space and could fold up to tuck away in a corner if desired. It held up pretty well for many years and would be more practical than the behemoth we have now. But it wasn't my choice...

I love discussing my "neanderthal" or "ignorant" belief in Christ with young, foolish "atheists."

I'm pretty sure Christ as a historical figure actually existed. Neither the Jews or Muslims contest that point.

Atheism is is unsupportable from a mathematical proof POV. An infinite number of denial proofs would be required to debunk all possible gods, but only one positive proof would be needed to show the existence of a particular god if that god existed.

The safest position mathematically is agnosticism as it allows for someone to produce a positive proof in the future.

In a given system is also possible to make true statements (ex god(s) exists) that can't be proven true within the rules of that system.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6del%27s_incompleteness_theorems

Ask a true atheist how they square their position with Godel's Incompleteness theorems and they won't have an intelligible answer because agnosticism is the only position that makes sense logically.

457 Some time back I reported here that at a Christmas Eve dinner in 2008, our liberal hostess had festooned the walls of her home with snippets of speeches by then-to-be-President Barry Ochoomba.

Even before then, this same lady used to deliver snide, snot and snark comments about conservatives and Republicans at social events at her house or ours.

Last year the snot, coming out of nowhere and apropos of nothing, was about saying Michelle Bachmann is intelligent was "like the phrase military intelligence", an oxymoron.

The year before it was about the Tea Party. Before that, about Sarah Palin. Vicious shit, every time.

The other guests, many liberal, have sensed how crass and classless her remarks were for Christmas Eve events, and have generally sought to change the subject when her political version of Tourette's kicked in.

We kept our heads down during all this, since grabbing this stupid and classless woman by the throat and throttling her didn't seem to be an option. We also know the other guests going way back to our kids' elementary school days, so we held back from challenging our hostess.

Not this year. We declined her "hospitality" in an telephone RSVP. Polite call expressing "regrets" and that was it. Family duties" and all that.

My wife and I KNOW we bring a lot to the annual event in terms of wit and conviviality. Sure, maybe our hostess can bring in Team B, but she herself must know it will be.... the B Team.

Somewhere I remember hearing disagreement whether the Bible's story about Jesus's birth was announced by the angels as "Peace on Earth, Good Will toward Men", or as "Peace on Earth, to Men of Good Will."

I'm going with the latter; I believe our hostess lacks the good will we expect during the Christmas season. Spouse and I agree we won't be going back for more abuse.

I suspect many others will be choosing sides going forward, given the clear line drawn between makers vs takers in the last election.

It's time to stop pretending that our enemies are our friends.

That is a well reasoned counter argument to my post; well done.

I would contend that your military background has already prepared you for any role in protecting the children in your charge. But if you read the Carriere(sp?) article in the sidebar, he offered free firearms training to those teachers motivated to seek it from him.

A public service from him, if you will.

The motivation should come from within, not from some 'we will pay you to do this'. No one paid me to desire to be able to protect myself and my extended family. I gladly paid for that myself.

Thanks for your response.

468 It's time to stop pretending that our enemies are our friends.

Ever notice something in the old Hollywood movies about Germany in the late '30s? There is always a scene where a family is eating dinner and suddenly one young cousin or nephew stands up and proposes a toast to the glorious Führer while everyone glances at each other and pretends to agree out of fear of being turned in.
Seems ominously similar to times today doesn't it?

Call your local tiny one man type moving company. The kind called "two men and a truck" or "student movers". Tell them you'll pay $50 or whatever for a treadmill. Those guys are always moving people that don't want their treadmill anymore and they often ask if the movers want it or can get rid of it.

481 Wow forget milk prices. Anyone try to buy bulk ammo? I spent all day trying to get a bulk box (1000) of 7.62 x 39. All out of stock everywhere or an incredulous price if in stock. Finally snagged 2 boxes of 500 ea. $156 each sans shipping. Kinda high, but best I could do today.

For those of you with Mosins, and Finn's, Molot (VEPR), or PSL's (Romaks) in 7.62 x 54 r, J&G Sales has 440 round tins of 70's Bulgarian silvertip Surplus for $69.95 each if you buy 2 (2 tins per crate). I snagged a crate for the heck of it.

That's the skinny on ammo for us AK/Finn Mosin guys.

490 I found a DVD of the Star Wars Holiday Special complete with Rifftrax commentary in my local used video store. It was recorded on VHS by a viewer in Baltimore, so it's complete, even with station breaks and commercials. And yes, you're right: even with Mike, Kevin, Co bringing the funny, the show is unwatchable a second time: it is, as Jimmy Carter said the federal tax code, "an insult to the human mind".

If you do find a copy, I suggest you skip the show and just watch the commercials: with the Rifftrax commentary, they're hilarious. Many are for unions, in particular the ILGWU and the UAW. If you remember the horrible 70s, like I do, you'll think ... well, frankly, you'll think that, given how throroughly the JEF is fucking things up, you'd give almost anything to have them back again.

Posted by: Brown Line at December 24, 2012 02:45 AM (6d08e)

491 @485, If you find a cheap SKS in good shape let me know. All of them are over 300 now (except for those Chinese made ones they sold to Albania) which are generally all out of stock. They were going for 230-250 and in rough shape too. The Stocks looked like drunken, angry beavers had gnawed on them, or they used them for fence posts. I picked up 2 a few months ago but had a friend go through hundreds to get 2 decent ones.

The darn Russian ones are over 500 now if in good shape. And that was before the latest mad rush for firearms.

I remember when they were going for 70 bucks.

In Canada the SKS (Like SVT's) are dirt cheap though. Something about the US Clinton import ban on Chinese SKS etc.

The SKS is becoming a top shelf rifle in the US now.

I had to suck it up for an hour yesterday while a donor blamed Bushitler for Sandy then she didn't even write a check. 495 I remember when the first Bush called for that import ban right after that douchebag shot up the schoolyard in california. The day after the shooting I hightailed it up to the store, and it was still fully stocked. Then the ban hit and I ran up to the store again. The dudes who worked there looked like they didn't sleep in a week. They had blank stares on their faces, and were pretty much leaning against walls or on the counters, or were just sitting The place was cleaned out, I mean empty. One dude was almost mumbling to himself. He was in a fucking daze, and he said "it went on all day...all day...people were lined up out the door..I even had an old lady ask to buy 2 of whatever was left...it went on all day....

These dudes never seen anything like that. I didn't either. This pace was stocked to the gills. It was before any real retarded laws, so they had HKs, Uzis, FN-FALs, Galil, M1A's, you name it. They had it all, and it was all gone. AK's and AR15's had hit $1500 in the coming weeks. It was just retarded.

He once entered a Benedictine order and I am always his *favorite* failed Catholic.

(How can I be a failed Catholic? You and Mom raised me, agnostic! I did try for Lutheranism when I was 12! Sorry, it didn't take. )

Anyway, my Dad kind of gets me, I think...

"Other than pissing off your Aunt Jan, what did you do this weekend?"

"Pretty much, nothing."

"Are you sure?"

"Okay, Dad. I cooked and ate read and listened to music like you wouldn't believe. First time in almost 3 years I had a place to myself. Happy to help you but Jeebus! Can't help but not like having some fucking breathing room"

"I'm gonna need some help with my physio-therapy, will you resent it?"

"Probably not, Dad. At the same time, I apparently fucking LOVE having the place to myself for 2 or 3 days"

We need to have separate places but nearby.

I don't feel comfortable living with you. We are both too old for this shit.

Brother wants to buy a Mobile home for his bride in Catalina and install Dad there.

She likes the mountain views, I don't like the commute.

15 years ago, this wasn't even possible.

I don't imagine this will be an option for me when or if I reach my Dad's age but I think it is AMAZING and so happy he can get it!

I don't know what to get him for Christmas!

Brand new knees!

He's the one gone under the knife, having to go through physio-therapy, bored shitless in the hospital, and even HE thinks this is cool as hell!

500 Saw The Hobbit this afternoon -- and, yes, it takes up pretty much the entire afternoon.....but in a nice way. New Zealand + matte paintings is pretty much how everyone would wish the world to look. The BH was amused that she recognized places......Middle-earth is getting that "homey, lived-in feeling."

I was concerned that it might have too much of a "children's story" to it -- nope, Jackson did a fine job of "double-decking" it......kids can watch, but it's meshed in the LOTR universe.

Other reviewers have said it better, but it was quite evident -- this is not a movie with a plot and a resolution.....this is 1/3 of a travelogue of Middle-earth. The ending is arbitrary, the set-pieces over-extended to fill time, there is no serious "we could show A or B, but A furthers the plot so B is buggered" editing. It's indulgent......but it's a beautiful, well-realized indulgent. If one is going to wander around aimlessly, it might as well be this way.

There were a couple of total nerdisms in the flick. While it wasn't directly addressed in the movie, Galadriel is Elrond's mother-in-law in the canon, and is one of the most ancient beings in Middle-earth, having been there prior to the Wizards, the Moon and the Sun, and even the glowing trees that the sun and moon echo. The Silmarils were supposedly modeled on her tresses, placing her well before the Silmarillion.....whereas Gandalf is one of the order of Maiar that sung the world into being but only entered into it much later -- and, further, can look like anything at will. This makes the little byplay about "looking better as we get older" somewhat more amusing.

I think the broadest "in-joke" was regarding the blue wizards. Gandalf claims that he doesn't remember their names in the film -- but, the truth is, Tolkien never gave them names.

All in all, it was gorgeous but not totally satisfying.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 24, 2012 04:06 AM (kaalw)

501 #500

That joke about the Blue Wizards sounds like something Jasper Fforde would put in a Thursday Next book. Kind of like the way everyone just accepted everything in the movie world of 'The Last Action Hero.'

If you're going to take a project like Tolkien you have to be prepared to throw the nerds some bones. But being an immense nerd himself, those bones are going to have Peter Jackson's dental imprints on them.

Doesn't matter.

Your closest oldest sister to the parents will be in charge ALWAYS.

No matter how ill-equipped she is.

Almost NO ONE, ever lays down a plan for this shit!

And I should know...

I tried selling Long Term Care Insurance just out of college.

I was wrong.

People are WAY more willing to make their little girls and their husbands change their shitty diapers than you can believe.

It was kind of funny....

The *poorer* people didn't want to take the risk. Sometimes I had to deny them a policy. Didn't make sense financially. IMHOP. I was a fiduciary.

The more affluent were kinda cruel, most times.

They certainly didn't want their son- in-law changing their shitty diapers but at the same time, they were professedly all cool with their daughters dealing with a Deputy peeling their beef-jerkey dead ass off of a hiking trail!

Which, by the way, NEVER fucking works like that!

No you won't.

I KNOW that you won't!

Wanna know HOW I know you are full of shit?

I never trip over bodies when I go hiking.

Actually, I have NEVER even seen a dead body, whilst hiking!

Not in Pima Cty. At least!

So, you are going to decide, to do the right thing, off yourself in the dessert, in such always as to be declared legally dead and yet we won't know about this?

How does this work?

It fucking doesn't!

Last time/only time I got a gun it was a Taurus DA Revolver.

I bought a bunch of " range" ammo but only one box of "Hydroshock" splodey type bullits.

Kept it bitey in my linen closet for almost 2 yrs.

Sold the gun back when I didn't live there anymore and needed the money.

I never fired it, to my shame...

Sounds like I would not have liked the recoil.

I kind of liked the "idea" of a revolver, I guess.

Is it that much easier with a semi-?

I'm pretty much okay with setting off an explosion in my hand, I guess...

I just don't want to do it wrong, ever.

So, is it better to keep a 38 that kicks or something sweeter you don't have to worry about.

All handguns...except maybe a .22 have a bit of recoil......you learn to manage it....thru practice.

Posted by: BignJames at December 24, 2012 06:41 AM (Sg0G/)

512 Deety,

Go to a range, and rent some guns. Find one you are comfortable with. Shoot a lot of them, different kinds. That's really important. You should not have to fit the pisitol. The pistol should fit you like a glove! There is one out there that will fit your frame and tolerance to recoil.

I like revolvers and have a few. My wife hates them. She likes semi auto. But semi autos can jam (not good in a life or death situation).

My favorite wheel gun (revolver) is the 8 inch barrel 44 mag S&W. Not for the meek. But it can disable a car.

The semi autos load quickly but if you like revolvers, get a speed loader or two. (little thingees that hold 6 cartridges and snap them home lickety split). Police Officers use them.

Now I have to admonish you a little. There are 3 secret words to firearms proficiency.

Practice, Practice, Practice.

Practice shooting in full daylight, at dusk or dawn (low light conditions). Practice shooting walking forwards AND backwards. Practice shooting standing, sitting, and prone (laying down).

If you are really dedicated, switch hands and do it all over again, and practice with a pistol in each hand.

Practice makes perfect as my Mom says.

It's a skill.

BTW for home defense nothing beats a 12 gage!

523 @515, I likey the Christmas!

Can't be with the family, I'm overseas working , I'm a tad bit sad as I am away form family long term but happier than a pig in mud I can provide for the family without the shame of welfare or skeezin a fake disability claim etc.

I will call my Dad (WWII vet, tough as nails and still kicking, God bless him) and Mom, as well as my wife and kids.

Thank you God, for blessing me with meaningful work.

524 >>Still, my mom will go on bout it for a few years how I broke her tree, and ruin everything.

Honestly, I don't see how it can be a true Christmas if you can't be at least accused of "ruining everything".

You ain't ruined *anything*, BTW!

Honestly, it's her just being bitchy.

Who fucking CARES!?

It's a fucking plastic tree.

525 Good morning, Vic Mrs. Marple. Got coffee and an hour or so before starting the real life day. My list today: cookies, pies, finish decorating the Christmas Tree, eggnog, deliver a few presents to neighbors. Tough jobs, huh?

Posted by: Retread at December 24, 2012 07:19 AM (zxitI)

526 I am thinking about some eggnog but I best wait for tomorrow. I know I will doctor it up with run or bourbon and then I will not be WAS tommorow and I have to cook.

527 Today is Christmas Eve and my wife and I's 31st anniversary.

Posted by: Vic at December 24, 2012 07:23 AM (53z96)

528 I tried to drunk-cook once. I was not asked to repeat the experiment. Best wait to start on the 'nog until the cooking is almost done.

Posted by: Retread at December 24, 2012 07:24 AM (zxitI)

529 I plan on making Hungarian Goulash tomorrow in the crock pot. Could not get my daughter to say for sure what time all her children would show up. So I will do something that will sit on "warm" all afternoon.

Posted by: Vic at December 24, 2012 07:26 AM (53z96)

530 egg Nog, I can't find it here. tomorrow I'm going to buy some Rum, crack some eggs, sprinkle on some nutmeg and put em in my mouth and gargle.

Third world egg nog!

Does it have a chance guys?

531 I watched "It Happened On Fifth Avenue" last night and now want to try slumgullion. First job, figure out how to spell it, then Bing for recipes.

538 My mom would make something similar to slumgullion. She would get home from work and incorporate some ground beef (we think) and whatever else was in the fridge/freezer. No idea what it would taste like. Always had onions in it. And we would eat it and love it.

539 It's Christmas Eve and if ever one good turn deserves another it's today, so here's an easy eggnog recipe for Judge Roy Bean:

Ingredients4 egg yolks1 /3 cup sugar, plus 1 tablespoon 1 pint whole milk 1 cup heavy cream 3 ounces bourbon 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 4 egg whites*Directions In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the egg yolks until they lighten in color. Gradually add the 1/3 cup sugar and continue to beat until it is completely dissolved. Add the milk, cream, bourbon and nutmeg and stir to combine. Place the egg whites in the bowl of a stand mixer and beat to soft peaks. With the mixer still running gradually add the 1 tablespoon of sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Whisk the egg whites into the mixture. Chill and serve.

We just called it dinner! Mom would put the pot on the table. We would eat. And every time (it seemed) she would look in the pot and say "That was supposed to be enough for 2 meals"

Next day was the same pot, with more frozen veg, or mac, or rice. A little scorched on the bottom from being reheated. Whatever you do, do not complain.

551 543 Retread.

I had read the recipes, and it brought back the memories of those dinners. Mom was a good cook when she had the time, but after 10 hours at work, it was a lot of stews, soups, rice and ? type meals. Almost always tasted good. There was no recipe for them.

561 Regarding the little gold bars, people in the U.S. can buy "junk silver", assorted pre-1965 U.S. coins with a high silver content. The zombies may hear the coins jingling in your pocket as they hunt you, but they won't see a whole gold bar as you break off a bit to buy that sterile dressing.

Or else, cause there's kids starving in China (and if you were really smart you didn't even mutter "send this to them then" under your breath cause there wasn't nothing wrong with her hearing) and you'll sit there until bedtime and go to bed hungry and then it will be waiting for breakfast! yum yum...

Deety I hope things look up for you soon but we'll be here for you to vent at either way.

And now I'm off to bed cause I have to work tonight and tomorrow night, too, because we're staying open since some of our employees don't celebrate Christmas and they wanted to work and since I'm the machine fixer I'll be GLAD to come to work cause what the hell, I wasn't doing anything anyway and so what if I DO celebrate Christmas cause SHUT UP RACIST and celebrate DIVERSITY! but I'm not bitter...

Later roonz and roonettez!

Not kidding.

I would like to eat that.

I will probably make some mashed taters that
Look fancy to go with the bird and the beans...
