Overnight Open Thread (22 Dec 2012)

I still can't believe Obama and Democrats won this year when you see this stuff. 75 Economic Numbers From 2012 That Are Almost Too Crazy To Believe.

#3 According to one calculation, the number of Americans on food stamps now exceeds the combined populations of ďAlaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.Ē

Buckle up. The ride is just getting started. In a few years, these numbers will be remembered as the good days.

Guns

So the President of the NRA calling for armed police officers at every school is described as "Revolting, Tone Deaf, And Irrational". So what does calling for National Guard Troops To Be Deployed At Schools get? Evidently zero criticism.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) had similarly tough words for gun rights advocates, including the National Rifle Association, which has said little since the schoolyard shooting.

ďI think theyíre overrated,Ē she said of the group Wednesday, noting that she has ďbig timeĒ opposition from the NRA in their reelection races and still wins handily.

Boxer unveiled two proposals Wednesday to bolster school security. The first would require the Justice Department and Education Department to draft new school safety guidelines and provide up to $50 million to help schools implement new security plans. Another proposal would provide federal reimbursement for up to 4,000 National Guard troops to be used by state governors to protect schools. The proposal is an expansion of a similar program that reimburses state governments who use the National Guard to assist in drug interdiction activities.

So where's the criticism of Boxer's idea? Anyone? Bueller?
May as well use Stryker's to get your kids to school. And an A-10 overhead just to be sure.

#1 Christmas Movie

So what's the #1 Christmas movie? Why it has to be Die Hard. Why Die Hard Is The Best Christmas Movie. Ok, ok, admittedly that slideshow with the article was weak but this video is much better.

Good Or Bad?

Couple of stories here. Season 3 of The Walking Dead has been pretty damn good so far so I'm glad it got picked up for a 4th season. However, they Lost Showrunner Glenn Mazzara who pretty much saved Season 2 and has steered Season 3 along nicely. I wonder if this means they want to follow the comic storyline more closely or deviate down a different path.

I take this as good news though. Damon Lindelof Isn't Involved With Prometheus 2. Not sure if they can right the ship with this movie series. They probably should just do a do over on Alien3 akin to what is happening with the video game Aliens: Colonial Marines. The Escape trailer looks damn good.

Kharma

Hahaha. Judge Fine Protester Who Got A Mouthful Of Pepper Spray. Damn that looks spicy.

The 20 Biggest Brand Fails Of 2012. Seriously? They had models pee themselves to show how hard it was to "contain their excitement"? Tune in next year when Harvey Nichols tries an ad that is themed "you've got to be shittin' me".

The Perfect Woman

Well, At Least In 1912.

In 1912 Miss Elsie Scheel of Brooklyn was deemed the ďmost nearly perfect specimen of womanhoodĒ out of 400 other coeds at Cornell that year. The 24-year-old Scheel had come to Cornell from Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heightsóshe enjoyed horticulture, outdoor sports, and was an ardent suffragette. One paper declared that she was "taller than Venus de Milo," standing five feet seven inches tall, weighing in "at a healthy 171 pounds, and possessing a decidedly pear-shaped figure (it measured 35-30-40)." Isn't that refreshing? According to the NY Times report, Scheel did not have "a single defect."

56 The real problem with National Guard in schools is that there are enough strangers around already. You don't need to using NG from lower-east-middle-bugfuck to be policing schools in upper-west-middle-mullesborough. Anyone remember when the pilot from Southwest (I think) went on his rant about how the glory days of being an airline pilot have gone the way of the Dodo? Something about how all of the stewardesses now are grandmas or fat or are a bunch of queers. Hilarity. And totally true. Flying now is a major pain in the balls. The allure and excitement of soaring in the clouds has been lost due to smaller leg room, shitty meals and angry stewardesses. I fly a good amount of the time and I am usually tormented by beingsquished against the bulkhead by a large man or woman who takes up their seat (and then some).

97 Actually Sky Waitresses are a thing of the past. Most 'Flight Attendants' now are Teh Ghey Mens. All they do is do a bad emergency demo and schlep drinks and throw chips at their customers. All that with mostly shitty attitude to boot. Flying used to be kind of special. Now Greyhound offers better service and you don't need to get your junk fondled before boarding.

Have to concur with that one. There was a time when the term "stewardess" cojured up thoughts of a beautiful, sexy woman. Now they're old and wrinkled or gay men. Thinking I got a bargain in my M14. $1100 private sale, from a guy who has fair collection of guns. He can't shoot anything that makes recoil now because of a retina problem.

I also picked up a bunch of Russian steel case ammo from him--it eats the stuff with no problems. Cleaning the junk the steel leaves is simply done with spray carb cleaner from my auto parts store. The groups are a bit looser than say, Cabela's give, but very acceptable. And it goes bang every tine.

Yes indeed. The harder decision is if one should pay off a cheap mortgage, say maximum $417K conventional at 3.5% 30yr, or invest that money in income producing properties generating 6-10% return. Thus owning $800k in real estate while one property is paying off the other.

Now, I know GAP is proprietary, but it doesn't seem likely that Glock is going anywhere. Ford cars use "proprietary" parts, and nobody worries about that. People told me it's scarce, but the 1st 5 gun shops I called stock it, and you can order it all over the internet. I just don't know. It's been implied that I'll find it just slightly more useful that a rifle chambered in .222 Rem, but I dunno. This ammo doesn't seem that hard to find. Thoughts anyone? The gun is in real good shape, and they're asking less than $300, but I'm not sure if I should (heh) pull the trigger on this deal or not.

Fortunately for me I pay off my credit cards monthly. I have a couple of department store cards. I have received letters that the interest has gone up to 25% and 26%. I'm guessing that this is due to gubmint interference. They limited what credit card companies could do to people with bad credit, so I guess the companies decided to do what liberals always love, punish everyone.

I considered closing the accounts, but thought, what the hell, I'll keep the cards and not charge anything.

All online dealers sold out. I called Dewey in Texas!

Dewey said, "don't waste money flying back here. Wal Mart, guns shops, online everyone be sold out sonny". Dewey added "Why the heck you want an AR-15? You have more guns than God and better ones than an AR-15! You have manly guns sonny!"

I went online and bought high capacity magazines, including AK 75 round drums at a slightly inflated price. At normal and sale price I purchased AK 30 round mags (lots) a few CZ 82 mags and four-35 round mags for my Polish sub-machine gun that has been converted to semi - auto.

Then I snagged a Saiga semi auto shotgun with two 15 round drums (20's all sold out) and a few 12 round mags. For those not acquanited with Saiga, its a 12 gage AK! Whoo, Hoo!

I'm buying a few more crates of ammo tomorrow.

I bought slings, chest rigs for holding AK mags, grenade launchers and inert practice grenades (I have a few rifle's with the grenade launcher attachment). I bought stuff I already forgot about. I can't even remember all the stuff I bought, I need to check. I will never chastise the wife for binge shopping again!

As for gun control, I think America just voted with their wallets. Everything be sold out.

Thanks Obama! If you, the lying press, and dumbass arrogant, Brit, Libtard, Piers Morgan had not shot your mouths off, my wife would have never let me buy all this stuff.

This is going to be the best Christmas Evah! I can't wait to look under the tree!

Thanks again Obama,Feinstein, Lying lib-tard press and Piers. You guys are the very best!

Merry Christmas to all!"

268 Money must be reinvested

Real estate has unlimited future tax risk. I learned that the hard way when an 80 acre vacant land investment property bought by my dad decades ago in NY slowly morphed into an ongoing tax liability.

Vacant land is dicy, you can get fucked by the stroke of a zoning change pen, and rental property has huge liability aspects (I've been sued for over $1.6M on a bogus slip-and-fall), and tenants trash places.

In a lower tax era, I was pro real estate, but now I've become kinda jaded after getting hammered over the past 12 years.

311 @260, Old Sailor Poet,

I assume that's an M-1 carbine. Right? My Dad, a WWII vet has 1. Nice rifle BTW! Who was the manufacturer of your M-1 if I may be so bold to ask?

Try samco global arms for carbine mags (standard issue was 15 rounds, and they had a 30 round mag too).15 rounders New in wrapper 30 bucks. Used, 15 bucks. Click on the M-1 carbine on the main page.

BTW, I was thinking about buying a Rock-Ola M-1 Carbine. Don't really need one. Just thought it would be nice to yell out the window on Armageddon day "Don't make me play ya'all a tune on that Rock-Ola!"

Cheapest I know of for M-1 carbine mags is 10 bucks or so at AIM, www.aimsurplus.com. They be sold out, and those are not original; GI (they are Korean manufacture).

Its a run on magazines over 10 rounds due to our fine friends at the Whitehouse who never let a tragedy go to waste when pushing the ole leftist agenda!

For 30 cal M-1 ammo, Aim surplus has $18.50 for a box of 50. That's the cheapest I could find in a limited search.

Google Aim Surplus, Southern Ohio Guns, Classic Firearms, J&G Sales (formerly the rifle ranch in Prescott AZ),They have this stuff all the time.

312 The NRA will bug the eternal f*** out of you to renew. They will start the day after your membership starts telling you your membership will soon expire.

I just got year to year memberships. They started doing this and by the second year of it, I said enough. So I quit and I told them why. They also aren't as aggressive as you might think towards certain gun laws and endorse some I thought they shouldn't have.

They like a nicer and less venal AARP. They look out at least a little bit for you but they're constantly on the beg.

Try one of the others. The main thing is to let your locals, state reps, house reps/sens that you are watching what they do and will vote accordingly.

Well, is this the storied Saturday gun thread, after all?

Old Sailor's Poet @260, what's the make/year of your M1 Carbine? I've got one decent mix-master (mixed parts from re-arsenaling) with a 1943 Quality Hardware receiver, and an Auto Ordnance reproduction (based on a 1942 Saginaw Steering Gear reportedly lent by the curator of the NRA museum to AO, now owned by Kahr).

You should have no trouble finding either ammo or mags for it. Go to:

ammoseek.com

A quick check there returns scads of online retailers with 30 carbine. And there are many more online sources besides those showing up in ammoseek (or the less extensive ammoengine.com).

Mags should be easy. Both 15- and 10-round new production mags at Midway and (I'm sure, without checking), other online gun sources. Even a fair number of original USGI WWII mags (some in storage cosmoline) still for sale online and certainly at the better gun shows.

Love my carbines. Reload for them, so my factory ammo is just for friends to shoot (generally don't let anyone else shoot my reloads) and a reserve in the even reloading is interrupted.

338 @260 (Old Sailor) and 316 (Dave).

Just a hint for online shopping. They charge you shipping. To keep costs down, choose the slowest possible. (UPS ground).

Also buy alot. Don't buy 1 magazine, or 1 box of ammo. Buy a crate..you get a discount. Look around on there and get everything you want or need.

Buying 1 magazine for 15 bucks and then getting hit with 15 bucks in shipping is not cost effective.

Just a hint from an old timer.

BTW the UPS guys hate me. Hauling 70 lb crates of ammo down my long dirt driveway takes a toll on them young fellers. Its a new UPS feller every 6 months after they blow out their back.

The mail lady asked if she could leave the boxes by the mailbox. I said NO! It says adult signature required. She said, I can sign it for you! (Visions of a pistol, olr ammo being ripped off by a kid..who does something bad with it. .Oh hell no!).

I smiled and repeated.."ADULT signature required!"

The mail lady now hates me too!

344 Colorado Alex, I personally don't criticize the sex and violence in the media. I just find it annoying that these actors and musicians are so angry at the NRA and never look at their own maladjusted industries. Who does more to glorify violence, the NRA or the entertainment industry? Is that puffy face Judd woman still planning on running for office? I signed up for Twitter a few months ago just so I could make smart ass remarks to her tweets about abortion.

I'd argue that the problem is less the violence itself as it is the rise of the anti-hero to a level of glorification that hasn't been seen before.

It's like pornography: the problem isn't the sex, but the pizza delivery guy. Pornography puts out fantasy about human interaction that we as adults know isn't real, but that kids don't have the capability to understand, which is why it's perfectly reasonable to demand that it not be broadcast in public where children can have uncontrolled access. Likewise, when the "hero" of a film or television show is a barely contained psychopath or criminal, we as adults understand that he's not to be admired. Children, especially children with some sort of mental disturbance, don't understand this.

I don't think Ashley Judd will run. It's a damn shame, becuase I actually think the puffy cheeks are kind of cute. They make her look like a chipmunk, which is fine because I do want to stuff my nuts in her mouth.

Judge Roy Bean, your response to Old Sailor's Poet was better than mine, though mine was additive in a way. Your advice about buying in bulk and paying attention to shipping is very sound. And AIM Surplus - though I've never bought anything from them - does have good ammo prices, a good reputation with customers, and the savvy to start selling a cheap Garand ammo offering from Prvi Partisan (now that the true final end of surplus is in sight with the CMP's HXP at less than two years' supply, according to the director).

Though reloading for me has, as others have found, resulted in a sort of total disconnection from the world of factory ammo and its availability, back in Panic I days (2008-9), I found a few great deals (both price and even the availability) on handgum ammo at the Scottsdale Gun Club (sgcusa.com), of all places. Very nice and responsive folks, too. My only real "secret source" - they do not show on any ammo search engines and have very limited buzz at gun nut forums.

Tobacco Road's gone, but I wanted to tell him that 32 caliber revolvers like his can shoot a few calibers, and are perfect for reloading (esp. since, as he says, the factory ammo is scarce and pricey). I'm considering trying to get the wife interested in a Ruger 327 federal revolver, as I could load the ammo for it at customized/tame levels she would probably enjoy.

DAve, I'm envious of your Rem-Rand 1911. Never seen one for sale for under 2K. I've got 2/3 of the WWII trinity (Garand and an M1 Carbine), and am content to use a Springfield 1911 mil-spec model (with real surplus Rem-Rand grips) in the 1911 role

PurpAv, when/if the cash flow gets to the point hoped for, my first investment idea was actually rental property in the next neighborhood over (in a nice and very quiet SoCal major city). Fear the time, and hassle potential - but no longer have much confidence in my ability to invest in the public markets, as the Fed and the feds have apparently succeeded in abolishing market dynamics, and a rental 5 min. drive away seems like an investment where at least the fundamentals are real and I can assess them.

But comments like yours - whichecho with real experience the apprehensions I have before the fact - give me pause. Well, there's the chance I won't have the money anyway - so there's something!

If you want to return to the glory days of flying on airliners, fly an Asian airline. I highly recommend my favorite, Korean. Each flight attendant is a paradigm of demure Asian beauty and solicitude. Even in coach.

Those days a flight was very expensive however. That's why most families drove to their vacations instead of flying. It would be difficult to drive for three days now and keep your sanity.

Jay Leno joked about how dads would always say "if you kids don't cut it out I'm going to turn this car around RIGHT NOW! Yeh dad, we're 800 miles from home, you're going to turn the car around"

358 I've done this one before but for you folks with a dear older relative who has memory problems
"Old Martin & a Mandolin"

Daddy made it through the big one
Home in forty five
A photograph of momma
Is what he swore kept him alive
A purple heart and an old guitar
Given by a dying friend
Daddy promised him he'd play it
If he made it to the end

My father bought that mandolin
From a neighbor up the road
Who headed home to Oklahoma
He'd blown in with that dust bowl
Daddy kept both instruments
In a corner by his bed
Orville Gibson, C.F. Martin
And the music in his head

Daddy moaned Hank Williams
To a Dixie melody
Little Jimmy Dickens
Would take a waltz to Tennessee
Then he'd sing Amazing Grace
Wash away my sin
On a flat top Martin
And that old Gibson mandolin

A battered Martin D-18
Mahogany and spruce
It was a wooden work of art
From forty two
A Sunburst Gibson mandolin
It was a classic Model A
Two voices straight from heaven
When my dad would sit and play

Daddy moaned Hank Williams
To a Dixie melody
Little Jimmy Dickens
Would take a waltz, to Tennessee
Then he'd sing Amazing Grace
Wash away my sin
On a flat top Martin
And that old Gibson mandolin

I go to see my father now
His memory almost gone
His mind is tired
But his body carries on
I sit and strum my guitar
And he holds that mandolin
And sometimes, for a few songs
My dad comes back again

Daddy moaned Hank Williams
To a Dixie melody.......

And that there folks, is how you write a song
You can hear a bit of it free at true-north music dot com.
Remove the space between north and music. You'll find it on the live cd.

Goodnight & Merry Christmas

And that's the airlines' fault, right?

I once flew business class to London next to a 350-pound blivet. Not even those seats (the old kind, not the new recliners) could keep his blobby parts from oozing into my space.

But try to charge those folks extra fares to sit in double-wide seats, and watch the ACLU jackals descend, like a "wolf on the fold."

I read your link about the guy caught in the riots with his family. Chilling stuff! Exactly why we need military firearms. Thanks for that. Alot of Koreans bought SKS. They were 60-70 bucks back in the day (now 200-500). They defended the turf. SKS shoots a 7.62 x 39 mm (same as an AK) but is acurate out to about 50 yards more. And it has the bayonet, and in some cases a grenade launcher. I have 10 of them. Great rifles!

I'm not jewish, but I think we need to stand by that country, since they are the only one in the mideast that like us.

@all, flying American..just sucks.

I fly China airlines all the time. Drinks free, food free. No fat Nazi witches or fagboys telling you how to fly. Stewardesses are beautiful and friendly

I ordered a beer on a US airline once. The fat witch must have had me confused with someone else. She said 'Sir you have had enough". That was the first beer I ordered and I was sober and had not had nary a drink before boarding.

I drive from Texas to FL, NV, DC etc. I just don't want to mess with US airlines, or the Nazi TSA feel-a-thon anymore. And I can pack my guns, or carry them concealed until I hit the MD line etc.!

Posted by: DAve at December 23, 2012 01:40 AM (XDC0v)

398 383 Forget the NRA. A basic membership costs them money so joining doesn't actually help the cause. It wouldn't HAVE to, it just does. The sons of bitches spend everything you give them on 1st Class postage (?!?!?) on endless pitches for even more donations. And every Life member will tell ya they keep right on begging. And beyond one off donations they want ya to put em in your will so they can suck you dry from beyond the grave.

The same is true of practically every charity out there. Donate once, and you'll never hear the end of it. (On the plus side, it's an easy way to get a lifetime supply of return address labels.)

I donated to a few political candidates in 2010 and I still get regular e-mails from them. I didn't donate to anybody in 2012. Fuck 'em. They'll take enough of my money anyway if they do get elected. Why would I want to enable them?

405 @398 and Dave!

My Daddy is a lifetime member of the NRA. He called them up and said, Geez! I opted for lifetime member and you are still me sending advertising crap. Stop sending it or give me back my money.

Never got a reply, crap still comes!

Actually, it's times like this we need the NRA. When they put the blame on Hollywierd and video games I was ROFLMAO.

No way do leftists want to touch that, or morals, or individual responsibility or any of that.

NRA, I hate the mailings. But card well played sir!

411 When they put the blame on Hollywierd and video games I was ROFLMAO.

They're off base on that though. The rising popularity of FPS games correlates inversely with the decline in murder rate over the past 20 years (starting just about the time Id's first Doom was released).

412 I have to jet, last post . Whats up with that cat?

They have dog races in Macao. I love em. You can spend all day at the dog track, eat, drink , bet small etc., for maybe 10-20 USD.

But I was looking at that cat running and thought 'Cat races".

If we can breed the cats bigger, and put little squirrel monkey jockeys on them (if we can figure how to keep the cats from eating them) that would be a hoot!

Just sayin!

BTW I brought up the issue of squirrel monkey jockeys at the dog track and was turned down!

Apparently Squirrel Monkey ranks fairly high on the greyhound delicacy list.

Quantity doesn't matter. If you're not going to avoid pork, and at least pay lip service to the Sabbath, you're not the genuine article. I have a bunch of JINO acquaintances, they all identify with liberalism more than being Jewish.

Being an observant Jew is work. It takes discipline, restraint, and a certain minimal level of planning to get through the Sabbath. These are all admirable qualities liberals lack.

I've used it on model airplane engines that had pistons rusted to cylinders with brown rust. That Evapo-rust shit is like fucking magic. The rust goes away and all that's left is the micro-pitting.

I don't know what Daubert Cromwell is using. The packaging isn't specific other than to say is highly NON toxic.

Maybe the MSDS sheet would offer more? I never bothered looking it up. I dumped a bunch of the spent shit on some Aloe plants and it didn't harm them at all.

Posted by: @PurpAv at December 23, 2012 02:49 AM (xpgUt)
