| CALL YOUR SENATOR: Porked-up Sandy Relief Bill Vote is ImminentEarly in the week I wrote about the bloated Sandy relief bill working its way through the Senate. It'll be up for a vote this afternoon, but before that it'll need sixty votes for cloture. To get GOP crossovers, the Democrats have larded up the bill with extra spending items having nothing to do with Sandy. A reminder of what's in the bill: $5.3B to Army Corps of Engineers (that's more than their annual budget).$150 million in fisheries disaster recovery in Alaska, Mississippi, and American Samoa. $56.8 million for charting the debris from last year's Japanese tsunami. $41 million for eight military bases including Guantanamo Bay. $100 million for the federal Head Start day care program. $188 million for new Amtrak lines (not repair, whole new lines). $20 million for a nationwide "Water Resources Priorities Study". $4 million for the Kennedy Space Center. ABC News obtained a marked-up version of the bill that's been edited by hand to reflect the attempt to get Republican votes. Both the Club for Growth and Heritage Action are urging Senators to vote against the bill and promising to include it in their annual "scorecard" of votes. I hadn't noticed the Corps of Engineers shenanigans until Heritage Action pointed it out: For example, of the $5.35 billion requested for the Corps of Engineers, just $1.838 billion – or 34% – is for “disaster recovery.” The remaining $3.512 billion is for mitigation efforts, which the Obama administration request says would be used to address “impacts associated with a changing climate.”According to Politico, that CoE pork is directed at GOP senators in Louisiana and North Dakota. You can guess that the "fisheries relief" is to woo Senators from Mississippi and Alaska. If the Dems get those votes, the bill will pass. If you're the type to call or email your Senator, now's the time. This will be voted on today, probably around 2pm. CommentsPosted by: navycopjoe at December 21, 2012 01:10 PM (YxR6P) 2

What we don't agree on is what we can do about it. The answer -- with apologies to Malor --is: Not. A. Friggin'. Thing. The time when either a) what's good for the country or b) the wishes of its citizens have any effect on what D.C. does are long gone. There used to be a lovely Mill with mill pond and a beautiful stone walled dam. It's been in Chester County for hundreds of years, and is one of the oldest buildings.
Now it's a fookin swamp, courtesy of the Army Corps of Engineers. they went around ChesCo telling private property owners they could no longer have any dams. At least three pretty ponds near me are now swamps. Oh and they flood the road now more too. That's a hell of a lot of extra money for annoying people and making things ugly, Army Corps of Engineers! Someone in what passes for leadership of the Republican Party or Conservative movement really needs to take a stand against omnibus bills. Bills should be targeted and unified, not big bloated free-for-alls. In the real world, if two people want the last of something, either they share or one or both go(es) without. In Congress, both get what they want and someone else gets a few million dollars too for no reason. Not a word about what the money in the bill is actually going to go for. CBS = NBC = CNN = ABC = Pravda. 138,
You're catching on. Gabe's interest isn't conservatism or the GOP. It's advancing an agenda that hurts those who don't support sodomy. So on issues that hurt the GOP and conservativism (like going with Boheners stupidity on plan b) he goes against it, on issues that help the GOP (like passing the sandy bill) he suddenly discovers principals. As with most gay sex advocates, he has only 1 real principle, and once identified, all his other positions make sense and are transparent. Chique,
Not talking about others. Talking about gabe, whose posts, positions, and citing of principals are internally inconsistent in their entirety, with the exception of a single issue that also explains the entirety of his otherwise nonsensical positions. That's not an ad hominem. I'm not calling him a name, I'm just calling him out as having only 1 real principal. It's to the point where he is spinning like a top (plan b post vs this) to do advance anything that harms conservativism. Posted by: Hopeless at December 21, 2012 02:19 PM (pQXbd) 178
how is killing Plan B (a symbolic measure anyway since Obama would veto it) "helping conservatism" except in this simplistic "fight harder and feel good about yourself" mentality?
the thing is that while tax increases won't help the economy, this assumption that they'll totally wreck it and lay bare Obama's failures is wishful thinking. Republicans should of course fight against Obama's promotion of this idea that the programs he wants can be entirely funded with an upper-bracket tax increase, but this "NEVER SURRENDER" posture is moronic given the specifics of the situation AND the fact that whether taxes should go up, down or stay the same is totally situation-dependent. i find it extremely weird that some of the same people that want the GOP to throw out certain positions that, even if you think they're wrong, are very deeply felt core convictions, but giving an inch on layered fiscal issues in incredibly unfavorable circumstances consigns you to RINOdom. They {Senators Reprasentatives} are in for them selves, what are they thinking, well I gues they arn't, Every Bill that is proposed is loaded with PORK/EARMARKS funds that don't exist, but who cares? Well for one thing you all voted to keep the PATHETIC BUNCH in office. We can only blame ourselves. When the work force continues to dwindle the few that remain and STILL WORK will pay for it TAXES, that's inevitable, we will all end up being taxed to make up for these morons spending sprees. I gather our Congressman aren't much different then a few individuals that owe back taxes, over spend on their Credit Cards, then declare Bankruptcy, I think Bankruptcy should be done away with, time to responsible.
