FIAF - The Stranglove Edition. [krakatoa]

I don't get the hand-wringing over Boehner's latest episode of stepping on his own dick. He's an ineffectual and therefore inconsequential Speaker, and I have no idea why anyone held out hope he'd come up with a political "win" here.

As if the passage of plan B was going to ever provide any significant political cover.

Fuck Boehner, and the house.

We, America, lost the war for the Economy on Nov 7.

Trying to find tiny nuggets of "Win" at the base of the of the mountain of DOOM seems a pointless attempt at face-saving and hope-casting. There's no face-saving in passing legislation you know will never see the light of day. And as the saying goes, "Shit in one hand, and hope in the other, and see which hand fills up first."

Screw"show" legislation, and dork false hope right under its double-rainbow tramp-stamp.

The Right has lost the battle of the checkbook. The Senate hasn't passed a budget in 4 years, and the country voted to continue this lawlessness.

May the Senate eternally sink on the barbed cock of Satan.

There was no possible "Win" available in plan B that would not have easily been ignored or recast by the dominant media to a fatuous electorate that has become addicted to reach-arounds.

Screw the Media, and the trite electorate they lead around by the nose.

Matter of fact, that goes double for claiming they can ban "bad" guns and somehow stop crazy people from doing what crazy people do.

If you all have done or are doing what you should be, (i.e.: Exercising your 2nd amendment rights), no gun ban will affect you. If they want to play at Fascism and try a real gun-grab, well, let's just say:

The "Cold, dead hands" Rule still applies, and is 300 million weapons strong (and counting).

So quit your worrying over milk that was spilled and dried up months ago.

It's Friday, and if ever there was a Friday in need of a hearty "Fuck It All", it is this one.

Embrace the FAIL, and remember, you can't spell FAIL without the "F", "I" and "A".

I'm heading back home to Tennessee in a few hours. Tonight I dine, I drink, and I bed my woman. Or she beds me, depending on what we drink.

I suggest the rest of you find something similarly rewarding. That's what weekends are for.

6 "Fuck the electorate."

That there is the real answer. Our neighbors, family, friends, and associates have been donking our squeakholes for decades. Party's over.

"We" have no one to blame but ourselves. The Grand Experiment is probably over, too. What will the "mainstream" conclude? It's now time to blame "the purists".

30 The Right has lost the battle of the checkbook.

Exactly right. Everybody loves them some "free" stuff from the government, even many of those who consider themselves 'conservative', while simultaneously believing that someone else ("the rich") are going to pay for it. The only way they'll ever see the folly of this is to give them every tax increase the liberals want, and eventually it will hit them in their own pocketbook. Then maybe they'll be change.

We've talked economic theory for over 25 years and they don't want to listen. Fine by me.There are other ways to get our points across.

Washington is completely disconnected from the People. They are only concerned with others inside the beltway and the media. By all rights John McCain should have lost his senate seat after the previous election. Instead, he raised tens of millions (a record before Warren) for his State campaign and held onto his seat again. The "representatives" in DC only care about power and the money that buys it. It can't be stopped now without some sort of revolution---either a dramatic peaceful one or other.

98 Anyone have any good pie recipes?

The secret to a great pie is always the crust. I found a recipe that uses an entire f'in stick of butter for the bottom crust. So, for pumpkin pie you only need one stick. Apple pie needs two layers. So, there's that.

Also, apple pie with many scoops of vanilla ice cream, drowned with Kahlua, with a liberal hosing of whipped cream is sure to bring you quickly to the point in time you fall asleep and another day closer to the day 0bama leaves office. So, there's that.

105 I've been observing something. It seems like we have an imbalance going on, that may explain our current predicament. The Democrats fight the Republicans, while the Republicans fight the Republicans.

I think I found our problem, nobody is fighting the Democrats!

If only there were and answer to that problem, and by "an answer" surprisingly I don't mean "Republicans shitting and pissing all over each other like some kind of vomit-inducing fetish porn video."

Except there isn't an answer, if there was an answer someone would have found it by now.

Oh, yeah, and cronyism and vote fraud and FandF and Benghazi and the other 500 scandals that get brushed aside for the shiny new scandal until we get distracted by another shiny new thing five minutes later.

Use all the tactics of the left against them. Someone said we need to be better then them...well we tried and we have lost. It is now time to switch tactics.

And if someone on our side goes off the deep end and gets violent we need to blame the left for driving them to it. Never ever no matter what ever outright condemn one of our own...ever.

I know it sounds terrible, but at this point we need to stop playing nice against people who want to destroy us and our country.

I agree with this, and the first thing we need to do is repeal the Hollywood tax cuts.

The Strategy reminds me of this:

Smokey the Bear heads
into the autumn woods
with a red can of gasoline
and a box of wooden matches.

His ranger's hat is cocked
at a disturbing angle.

His brown fur gleams
under the high sun
as his paws, the size
of catcher's mitts,
crackle into the distance.

He is sick of dispensing
warnings to the careless,
the half-wit camper,
the dumbbell hiker.

He is going to show them
how a professional does it.

136 The secret to good pie crust is to use enough shortening and work it into the flour with a pastry cutter or fork until it resembles corn meal--that is where you get the flakes in the crust. Then form it into dough ball, use ICE water (water with ICE floating in it, not merely cold--just the water)--because it helps maintain the flakiness. Turn the dough onto a well floured board or waxed paper and roll it out quickly, keep the crust well floured as you roll it out. DO NOT REFORM IT INTO A BALL if it comes apart or cracks as you roll it out--that makes it tough. Just press it gently together on along the crack. A good rolling pin is essential. Some people put theirs in the fridge to chill while putting together the pie crust.

Pretty pie crust for pies with a top crust...put a small amount of milk in a dish or glass, about a tablespoon. Using your clean fingers or a pastry brush, lightly brush the top of the pie with the milk. Then take as small amount of sugar and sprinkle it on the damp crust. After the edges have browned, take aluminum foil and put a small strip around the edges of the crust to keep it from burning. Your pie crust will brown beautifully and look like it was sprinkled with diamonds.

Yes, revolvers are fine. It's a matter of personal preference, but I suggest going with a big caliber, one starting with a '4'; i.e., .44 magnum, .44 Special, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .40 SW. Usually not so much to handle since the weight/mass of a largish frame will absorb most of the recoil. I keep a scary big .45 SA Colt revolveras my bedside weapon.

Also, fixing it is a long hard slog and requires saying "fuck you you lying sacks of shit" to a lot of Dems and most of the press, and their heart's not in it.

On the other hand, not fixing it means more and more people, not just illegal immigrants who snuck in but people born here, will live here and not only have no faith in America but no loyalty to it.

Some people think that river's already been crossed, I don't think they know what that will look like. Consider Africa.

It's not the HIDs, it's the bad alignment. I've noticed more and more come from the factory set up wrong, it's crazy annoying.

BMW even made headlights that cut off vertically to avoid annoying drivers (and causing safety hazards), people still screwed up the installation or adjusted them wrong.

Right headlight slightly right, left headlight slightly right and down. But like 70% of cars seem to be set up wrong down, up and left, right into everyone's eyes.

There's no reason to keep an empty chamber in a revolver made in the last 20 years or so, with the possible exception of some Old West replicas.

Practically all have hammer block safeties now. You can put the gun in a vise and hit it with a hammer without having it go off unless the trigger is pulled.

The only safety you need is between your thumb and middle finger.

There was a large amount of electronic vote-switching; people votes straight R and were credited with straight-D. some even saw it happen, like in Nevada, Virginia, and Colorado. They caught it and it was somehow "corrected".

I don't know enough about that but I am very suspicious that it happened on a large scale.

I also know that all our key precincts, almost every single one, was packed to the gills on Election Day. Turnout was reported to be unprecedented for our side.

280 My inner-bartender wants you all to have a nice Friday evening-

So, here's a great recipe for a cocktail, if you have the ingredients. If you don't they're pretty easy to find.

It's a variation on the "Improved Gin Cocktail" with tequila instead:

2 ounces reposado tequila

1 teaspoon maraschino liqueur (not the juice from maraschino cherries, I like Luxardo))

2 dashes Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters

1 dash Angostura bitters

1 teaspoon agave nectar

Twist of lemon peel, for garnish

The original recipe called for stirring with ice in a mixing glass then strain into a cocktail glass.

I use a shaker and it's outstanding. YMMV.

This one's for sipping and relaxing. Complex with layers of flavor unfolding on your tongue.

Enjoy!

Honestly, this is the time of the year when we all need a holiday. The human body needs sunshine -- and guess what? You get the very minimum amount for the next couple of weeks. Something about the planet tilting for six months of the year or something. People who don't get enough sunshine feel like shit -- google 'seasonal affective disorder'. The suicide rate shoots through the roof this time of year. People point the finger at everything except the most obvious.

So we get together with friends and family. Eat too much, drink too much. It makes us feel a little better until we step on the scale on some sunny February day and say WTF?

The answer is not and has never within the Federal Government. An article V convention can get actual balance back into our government.

Take stock of what we have in the State level and we are in better position.

The question for our State representatives is: do they look to act in the midst of this national crisis, which I would define as an out of control Federal government, or do they wait until the crisis has devolved into a full out catastrope?

303 sorry but this is childish

and i don't mean that in the sense of "compromise is always the answer" or that Plan B was anything beyond symbolism, cuz of course neither of those are true. i mean childish in the sense that the FIGHT HARDER/failing that, let it burn strategy is totally self-defeating in the present circumstance, as is this mentality that because Republicans are unpopular now there's nothing that can be done about it in the future.

it's not like letting taxes go up on the top bracket is some deep, seismic cultural issue that fundamentally transforms anything. it's going to happen one way or the other, and there's other, more fruitful fights to be had in the future. if the economy does tank in O's second term it's not going to be entirely the result of this.

i hate to sound like the O supporters blaming everything on GOP opposition but it's not so much that Boehner's an ineffective leader (though obviously he's not as ideologically combative as a Gingrich) but that there's nothing he _can_ do to convince select members of his own caucus. if he united everyone under their plan, maybe he'd be a Great Leader...who'd proceed to shoot his own party in the foot.

304 Jake:

Sometimes you just have to let it all go, and start fresh.

Maybe that means learning a new trade. I suggest HVAC, plumbing, small engine repair & the like.

Maybe it means moving away from your support net, to where people are looking for someone with your current skills.

I did that for 7 years, living in 5 different states, when my industry turned bad. I'm not special. Just willing to travel to keep earning a paycheck. A lot of people in my field were not, and never worked in this field again.

Maybe it means getting off the grid, on a small piece of property with which you can be self-sufficient. I'm in the process of making that a reality now. It can't all happen at once, but if you set small goals for yourself, the big ones tend to sort themselves out.

This country is in a death spiral, but at the moment you still possess the freedom to attempt anything you can dream.

305 BTW i don't mean to downplay tax increases so much. i basically agree that they can have ill effects on the economy, just not as pronounced as some people think.

the broader argument, that there's no way for Obama to finance all he wants to do by simply raising taxes on the rich, i'm onboard with, and i suspect events in the future will provide the GOP with ample opportunity to say they told you so and fight against proposed broad tax increases.

308 Basically moo any quality (non-Hipoint) pistol (Glock, XD, MandP, Riger,etc...go to the range and see which you like best-) you get will be fine. Since you don't have the time required to do much research just assume your purchase will be sub-optimal and you won't be disappointed. Sub-optimal is very much good enough. You can go optimal later under more optimal conditions. Be sure to include at least 200 rds. of ammo, fmj for the range and hollowpoint for the home. No hollowpoints for 1911's- a 1911 might be nice

Which part, the Let It Burn part?

The scary thing is, Let It Burn isn't looking that childish anymore. Obama's #1 message (besides blame Bush) through the campaign was two words.

REPUBLICAN OBSTRUCTION.

That really sunk in. All the liberals keep repeating it. Well, here's the deal. They don't realize the consequences of their policies because they've never had to experience the effects of their policies, specifically, taxes. So give it to them.

When the economy crashes, the blame will be on them. With great power comes great frolicking responsibility.

If you have the opportunity to see a half-decent doctor about actual capital-D clinical depression, do so. Sometimes you're depressed because things suck and you're sad, sometimes you're Depressed but that's really chemical and has fuck-all to do with Shit You Can Control.

You should at least know which one it is. If it's physiochemical the "duty to be happy" "buck up camper" brigade can go play cards, because that has nothing to do with it and you need chemical help.

If it's not, that really doesn't help. Sometimes life just sucks, but the good news is you can overcome your urges because they're not a physiological breakdown.

Yep. Dogs are a good early warning system.
Even the little ones will yap and warn you that something is up.

My dog, thankfully, will not eat or drinkanything that I don't give him.
I didn't even teach him this.
He developed this on his own...probably because I was the one feeding him and taking care of him when he was a puppy.

The down side to this, is that I can't leave him with anyone and go away for a few days....or he would go without eating.
Even whenmy husband feeds him, if I'm not there to say "It's okay", he won't touch the food, no matter how good it is.

Try life therapy first- you're sad because you're stuck and you don't know what to do- that's the problem. So, find the answer. People who are doing better and can tell you how to get unstuck. Look around and see what the people who are having success have in common. Quit self-medicating. I would go to some AA meetings even if you're not an alcoholic and esp. if you are.

I don't think it's a lot of people, but it certainly is people who do not like problems. I've noted that most people who I've seen complain about Paras mention they've had several - think about the kind of person who gets several versions of one company's guns - professional competitors. They customize their guns and Do Not Put Up With Shit.

I'm sure that's not all of them, but I bought mine because my hangout range at the time had one do 200k rounds as a rental in three years with no warranty issues or failures - and I *saw* them bump-firing it repeatedly, which is horribly abusive.

I can't say all of them will be like that, but mine is. The only problems I had were a result of a gunsmith who botched a trigger job - I fixed it, works perfectly.

378 Personally, I have come to peace with our new permanent Democratic Overlords. Don't think the Republicans will ever win a national election again, so really, there's only so much we can do publicly.

I'm focusing more on my clandestine anti Uncle Barack stuff. Plus, it's way more fun to be secretly anti government and deviant, rather than being an deluded cheerleading Demformist.

379 In light of DAve's attempt to bring optimism, here is an Emily Dickinson poem I thought was appropriate. Which is one of her less pessimistic of poems.
__ ___ __ ____ __ ____ __ ____
There is another sky,
Ever serene and fair,
And there is another sunshine,
Though it be darkness there;
Never mind faded forests, Austin,
Never mind silent fields -
Here is a little forest,
Whose leaf is ever green;
Here is a brighter garden,
Where not a frost has been;
In its unfading flowers
I hear the bright bee hum:
Prithee, my brother,
Into my garden come!
_ _ _ _ _ _
though I'm not sure where this garden might be? Canada, Australia, TX, Tau Ceti?

Of course, there is ample support for whatever comes down, since the Dems have the power. I'm thinking it will be a case of how much overreach they can get away with.

396 Not a cure all, but try getting some sunshine every day, if you can.

I'm a bit of a nut, I'll admit it. I chart the position of the sun every day. I notice how at a certain time during the summer it passes through a tree at a certain branch position at a certain time. Almost coincidentally when my energy output is the highest. Months later I notice that it is much lower, passing through the lower branches of the same tree at the same time of the day, but it has much less warmth. When my energy output is much lower. I enjoy feeling the seasons change, but I know it affects how I feel about everything.

This time of the year, in the northern hemisphere, is the absolute pits. Sun has little warmth, little intensity of light. It's gonna get a lot colder before it gets warmer. My grandparents, who left Germany a hundred years ago, had a saying, 'As the days begin to lengthen, the cold begins to strengthen.' That's what we're in for for the next buncha weeks. To deny that the sun has an effect on our feelings, our perceptions, is to deny a reality based on hundreds of thousands of years of evolution. Or only 6,000 if you're a SoCon and so inclined.

My cure-all used to be a trip to Jamaica in January. I'd come back from a week there with enough energy to solve every problem in the universe. I doubt it was just the effect of Blue Mountain Coffee.

406 379 It's not optimism it's REALISM. Tennyson: There lies the port; the vessel puffs her sail;
There gloom the dark, broad
seas. My mariners,
Souls that have toiled, and wrought, and thought with
me---
That ever with a frolic welcome took
The thunder and the sunshine,
and opposed
Free hearts, free foreheads---you and I are old;
Old age
hath yet his honor and his toil.
Death closes all; but something ere the
end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
Not unbecoming men that
strove with gods.
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks;
The long
day wanes; the slow moon climbs; the deep
Moans round with many voices.
Come, my friends.
'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and
sitting well in order smite
the sounding furrows; for my purpose holds

To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until
I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down;
It may be that we
shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.

Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that
strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we
are---
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate,
but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

456 Yeah, I'm also not comfortable around guns. I support peoples right to have one, but I don't want one around.

You fear them because you're unfamiliar with them and have mostly seen bad association type horrible shit on TV. But in many places all over the country, people teach little 6 years olds to shoot. And if you have a healthy fear and respect for the gun, a little 6 year old can go his whole life with guns and not have a gun accident.

An unloaded gun is useless, except maybe as a club. You need to know how to make sure there are no bullets in it. Then, even if it's a bit intimidating, you know it's just a metal paperweight. It's perfectly safe that way. You can pop it in a safe too, but even if a toddler did get a hold of it, apart from dropping it on his foot or poking himself in the eye he can't hurt himself without the bullets too.

And you just get used to it. It might eat at you at first, but life goes on and you mostly forget it's even there and get used to it. It's not at all dangerous by itself, only if someone makes it dangerous, on purpose or by not respecting it and mishandling it.

A little deep unease with guns is not a bad thing. It will keep you from becoming absent minded with them and doing something stupid. That's the real risk, that with practice and use you don't become too comfortable with them and get careless.

476 #450 No, I do not have an MD. This is why I am sick I go to a DOCTOR rather than trying to self-diagnose.

All I suggested was that Jake go to a doctor, rather than trying to get over his feelings by himself. YOU, on the other hand, glibly offer your armchair unprofessional opinions that chemical imbalances (which you are NOT born with and I did not say anyone was born with them) are not the cause.

There are actual medical studies about this, you know. I didn't make up the idea of chemical imbalances. I am not in the employ of Big Pharma or its subsidiaries, either.

When I had to plan a wedding, I hired professionals to do the job. When I need wiring repaired, I call an electrician. When the drains are stopped up beyond my capability to repair, I call a plumber.

And when one feels bad mentally for a long time, it's time to call a professional. Depression can be cause by things like thyroid malfunction, dietary deficiencies, pituitary tumors, brain tumors, flu, anemia, and drug interactions. None of these reasons is made up and the information on this is readily available on the internet. All of these causes need to be checked by a physician so that the proper remedy can be applied.

So no, I am not a doctor; I am just smart enough to knowI might possibly need one, and so does Jake.

How about post partum depression, which is cause by hormones being out of whack?

I don't know what your definition of depression is, but prolonged periods of sadness, often with suicidal thoughts, is my definition. Symptoms include constant tiredness, loss of appetite, bouts of crying for no apparent reason, loss of motivation, lack of interest in everyday life, lack of grooming and bathing, frequent bouts of temper.

Yes, they will. Maybe not initially but eventually their privations will be extreme compared to their current station.

And worse, once their paper currency loses any value it once had. Once they can no longer buy food, rent hookers for themselves, nannies to raise their children, and armed guards to protect them from the rabble (us) then they'll feel the full force of the hell they've wrought.

At which point, they'll pray for death. And some will find it. The rest? they'll find out what it means to be weak were no one other than themselves gives a fuck about their welfare. And that lot will beg for death, but it will not be forthcoming.
