Overnight Open Thread (12-20-2012) [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]

If SMOD hits tomorrow, I will have been proud to deliver your very last ONT. God Speed, fellow morons and moronettes.

Welcome to Nanny Bloomberg's worst nightmare: A high carb, high fat, nutrient poor ONT. Empty calories? We've got 'em!

Most of us are torn between supporting complete freedom of expression and wanting at times to censor the heck out of others. It seems that RD Brewer's post about 'Saturation Coverage' got some to thinking. Velociman shares his take, in his usual eloquent style.

My point, should I ever meander to it, is that the "free press" are no longer that thing, that entity, exposing the powerful as they exploit they helpless. Rather, they are the critical component in a fascist, corporatist criminal syndicate, allied with but one political entity, and use the power of their supposed neutrality to wage war upon those not of a like political bent.

From Stan Smith, the simplest and cleanest defense against the claims that "guns kill":

In keeping with the spirit of the holiday, today's 'Jackass of the day' award goes to Santa.

From Cracked, the Five Most Famous Musicians who are Thieving Bastards.

Here is where having a few moronettes in the open blogger rotation becomes, well, iffy. You see, between the football threads and the "brought to you by" photos, the moronettes around here often get shorted in the eye candy department, and I think it's high-time that we rectify that situation.

After a bit of digging around I stumbled upon this but it left me with a bit of a tilted head. Hence, two of my personal favorites.

tim-tebow-hot.jpg

Eddie George.jpg

Now, now. Don't get your feelings tied up in knots, fellas. I have a little something for you morons as well.

See? I am a benevolent host.

And now, in closing....

sn't this just magical.

Boehner’s statement:

The House did not take up the tax measure today because it did not have sufficient support from our members to pass. Now it is up to the president to work with Senator Reid on legislation to avert the fiscal cliff. The House has already passed legislation to stop all of the January 1 tax rate increases and replace the sequester with responsible spending cuts that will begin to address our nation’s crippling debt. The Senate must now act,” he said in a statement."

It looks like December 26 is the last day to pass something and hand it to Harry Reid ...

... and let Reid and BO take the blame ... or not.

Apparently some R's are "sticking to their principles", or something. This is how BO was re-elected.

Maybe Boehner is a bit too much of a wuss.

I'm losing track of who the bad guys really are ...

... 2014 cannot come soon enough.

31 I'd say the State Media isn't just an arm of the Democrat Party - they built the current incarnation.

After 2001, when it became clear that not only did the Democrats enable Al Qaeda through their feckless leadership, but had specifically refused to take in Osama, repeatedly, when offered on a silver plate things look bad for the Democrats.

We were on the verge of seeing the liberal left implode. Nancy Pelosi was (secretly) signing on to the Bush foreign policy.

The State Media gave them succor and a new platform. They fought tooth and nail to suppress the Clinton legacy (as they do to this day with the "redlining" scare that would become the mortgage meltdown).

56 So I woke today to the sound to thunder. How far off I sat and wondered. No, wait, that wasn’t me, that was Bob Seger.

So today I woke to the sound of chain saws. I looked out the window and saw that my neighbor was having some tree work done in the backyard (All the houses on my side of the street have wooded back lots). They had a medium sized oak tree down, and had one guy roped off taking down some fairly thick branches that had been overhanging neighbor’s house. I got a cup of coffee and wandered over, noticing that the trunks had already been trimmed and a couple of the workers were busy dragging the branches down to the chipper behind their truck. “Y’know”, I said to the foreman. “If y’all don’t have anything planned for the logs from the trunk, and you cut ‘em into 16-20” lengths, you can dump them right over my fence here instead of hauling them away.” He grinned and said “That’ll save us some work.” A couple hours later they left, and I went back into the woods to see what they’d left. I’ve got a nice pile of oak logs, all cut to reasonable fireplace length. I’ll stack them to season this weekend, next year when I split them, I’ll probably be left with something just under a ½ cord of firewood. Plus I saved those guys some work. Win/win I’d say.

It is the easiest way to become successful in the music industry. Speaking of which, why are the Republicans still defending the music/movie industry?

I would have loved to see the R's offer a radical change to copyright just before the 2012 election.

It is simply unprincipled to raise taxes for no other reason than our enemies have chosen to Alinsky the wealthy and to buy into the class warfare rhetoric.

We do not have classes in this country the term middle class is progressive invention, we are not to be defined by the fucking IRS code.

Our opponents have set up a dichotemy where the rich and poor are in constant battle with one another where one can't get ahead without pushing the other down.

We are not the party of taxation and to hell with anyone who thinks it's good strategy to raise taxes on the rich.

I’ve got a nice pile of oak logs, all cut to reasonable fireplace length. I’ll stack them to season this weekend, next year when I split them, I’ll probably be left with something just under a ½ cord of firewood. Plus I saved those guys some work. Win/win I’d say.

It may vary from species to species, but in my experience generally wood splits a lot easier when it is green. If you are going to do it by hand, I'd give it a try now.

The first post of two, on the War on Boys.

With all the “War on Womyn” rhetoric being thrown hypocritically about by the misogynists and abusers of the left, perhaps one should take pause and consider if there is another, more real war going on: The war on boys. The majority of college degrees are awarded to women, around 56% to 57% across all colleges and degrees. In K-12 primary and secondary schools, girls massively exceed boys when it comes to literacy and related skills, and also with graduation and retention.

Central PA, circa 1950, purely a historical revision. I'm planning on a bit of the PRR in Duncannon connecting with the Susquehanna River and Western and a bit of New Bloomfield where the SRandW interchanged with the narrow gauge Newport and Sherman's Valley; in my little N scale world the NSVRR made it through to the Path Valley and 1) struck rich veins of ore and 2) connected with the EBT farther down the valley. That way I can justify the EBT Mikados on the narrow gauge portion, delivering coal to the ore processing plant in New Bloomfield.

182 142@110 really? Is that just by hand? Cuz I tried to split some green wood a few months ago with the hydronic splitter, and it all was left with strips of wood attached to each side of the log. Pain in the ass to separate into 2 separate logs.Posted by: Weirddave at December 20, 2012 10:31 PM (aH+zPAll by hand - I have never used a mechanical splitter. This last fall my family was cutting down a tree or two every weekend or so - first time in years that my parents have had the time to deal with the woodlot out back, and there was a lot of thinning to be done - and I would just split the bigger trunk sections the same morning the tree came down. 6-12" cherry, locust, butternut, etc, will split with a blow or two with the maul, if done quickly.

Posted by: Grey Fox at December 20, 2012 10:40 PM (x6tId)

183 But Oak gets really hard when it drys... so there is a 'sweet spot' to split...

Splitting maul. Just hit it a few times as necessary. Only thing I can't split is pecan. Lost a pecan tree in a storm years ago and I thought "What pretty logs these'll be"

Effing WRONG!

190 So, I'm bringing food into the ONT.

For our fifth wedding anniversary, we're going to our favorite restaurant in Dallas...The Grape.

Fifth anniversary...fifth anniversary dinner there. Yeah we're hooked. Plus the owner/exec. chef rocks and the chef de cuisine was just on Top Chef.

Tomorrow, my mom (who is here for another week) and I are making three kinds of cookies (chocolate chip, sugar and lemon white chocolate biscotti), peanut butter chocolate fudge and peanut brittle. Saturday is pierogi making day. Sunday my dad is going to attempt no-knead bread.

Christmas is French onion soup, fresh bread, beef wellington and green beans. Complete with a chocolate cake with raspberry curd filling and white chocolate ganache filling.

I just wanted to foodbrag...right now, besides my family, food is the enjoyment of my life. The outside world sucks.

I don't have much experience with oak, since it doesn't grow in our back .40 and most of the wood I end up splitting is from our own property.I vaguely recall thatI ran across some wood that did not conform to the "Split ASAP" rule - it could have been oak.Of course, not splitting it right away can have some other benefits - I spent a lot of yesterday and todaycarving out a bowl from some cherry that I never got around to splitting last October.

You'll love it, it can be IN YOUR FACE Call of Doody style or you can take a step back and think. With vehicles and aircraft run by humans in the game it really ups the tactics. Sniper laser designates a tank, you pop off a shoulder fired guided missile and then you've got to scoot because the smoke trail will give you away to enemy troops and helicopters.

Oh man, I love this game. I'm going to go play it right now, in fact.

264 It failed because a) it was stupid and b) no self respecting principled Republican votes for tax increases for the fuck of it.

Plan B should have been to leave the top two rates unchanged and cut the rest two points.

That would have passed the house complete GOP support and you would have gotten a fair amount of Donks.

You send it to the Senate and let the President explain why punishing the wealthy is more important than helping the middle class!

Use your fucking brains people, I know you have them!

Posted by: General Woundwort at December 20, 2012 10:08 PM (0fxcV)

It wasn't a tax increase. Taxes after Jan. 1st will already go up. The plan was to lower it for most people. Reid would not allow it to be passed, so even though the Middle Class's taxes would have been raised, the GOP would be on the record of opposing that. Now, unless they get this done in the few days they will have between Christmas and New Years, they will be labeled as the party that defenestrated the Middle Class in order to fight a quixotic attempt to protect millionaires and billionaires.

It would have played better then to have a plan which included lowering the tax rates for the highest earners after Jan. 1st.

Once the taxes are automatically hiked, it, just getting what we have now with Plan B will STILL be a tax cut, with ABSOLUTELY no way to claim that not changing the highest tax rates is a tax hike.

Obama is taking us off the cliff, and this symbolic gesture would have set the groundwork for the GOP in '14. Now, the GOP has all but conceded the 2014 election.

A friend of mine met him once in Columbus and he is a genuinely nice guy, very soft spoken and friendly.

Depends on what area you live in, though, how many kids you have, etc.

250K in SoCal will keep you comfortable, but a decent house in a decent neighborhood is easily 3 or 4K a month, and if you have even 2 kids you'd like to put money away for for college, it goes fast. Not to mention the 6 dollar a gallon milk, 4 dollar gas, etc

[28] And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
[29] And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
[30] And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
[31] And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
[32] He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

343 Okay, so I saw The Hobbit yesterday. I wrote this review for some buddies and I was going to post it last night but I dozed off on the couch. Apparently the comment section shit itself and died anyway so no loss.

Here ya go, ONT!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Where Robert is critical of the season's biggest movie.

So I'm going to be largely negative which is why I need to preface this whole review with two things.

1. I liked the movie.

2. Fellowship Of The Ring didn't wow me at first, either. In that case I wasn't won over until watching the extended edition.

OKAY! So here we go!

The Hobbit needed someone other than Peter Jackson directing.

No shit.

Here's the thing, the movie really is good. I really did like it. I loved going back to Middle-Earth, revisiting Hobbiton and Bag End. That was a joy. But Peter Jackson didn't need to be the one to take me there.

But why, I hear you ask.

In a word? Rehash.

Huh?

Let me explain.

The problems with the movie lay, not with cast or story but the fact that Peter Jackson keeps doing shit that directly or indirectly evokes Lord Of The Rings and it fucking takes me out of the movie EVERY TIME! And I don't (just) mean the Return Of The King Appendix stuff, I mean...shots, action sequences, that kind of thing.

But first the Appendix stuff.

Okay, I never objected to it. I thought it would be...kinda cool. In execution? Bad idea. Bad, bad idea. Every time that shit comes up it threatens to derail the story. It's problematic and it makes The Hobbit seem less like a stand-alone fantasy adventure story and more like an all important direct lead-in. It's not, nor should it have treated thus.

Jackson further complicates matters by basically reusing his own visuals. Remember the shot in Fellowship when the Ring slips onto Frodo's finger for the first time? Or the Moira escape? Or when Gandalf speaks to a moth to summon eagles? Oh, yes, he goes there. Again, recognizing these shots threatens to take me out of the movie EVERY TIME! Either he got lazy and decided to just use shit that worked before to save time on creating new ideas or he honestly believes this is a way to visually connect this new trilogy with the first one. The problem for me is it takes this film down a few notches in my estimation because none of it comes across as creative or fresh. Film makers should never *ever* remind viewers of other, possibly better, movies. Sequels, prequels and spin-offs need to be able to stand on their own, live and die on their own merits. If an inferior prequel is made, let that be for the fans to hash out.

What about the semi-original stuff added in? Hey, Radagast The Brown! He's cool, right? Well...look, Tolkien never bothered with the other wizards of Middle-Earth because they were sort of...unnecessary. Radagast and "The Blues" were never important. So unimportant the Blues didn't have names. I don't even know why Tolkien allowed for three more wizards for that fact. But there's Radagast in all his brown glory. And...uh...okay! I guess? Sure, why not? I mean he...uh...geez. Okay, he's not a bad character, he serves his purpose for PJ's The Hobbit. And that's what's important to remember, right? This is *PJ'S HOBBIT*. But it seems to me adding in a character like Radagast is just a bit self-indulgent that adds nothing to the proceedings.

And there's the Orc character that fills the purpose served by the Uruk-Hai character from Fellowship (and looks kinda like Kratos from the God Of War video game series). And all the other little story beats that Jackson recycles from Lord Of The Rings. It's these fucking little things that make me super critical of the whole damn show.

I did say I liked it, right? Just to be sure we're clear on that.

It is a good movie. It's cast well, it looks great, the Howard Shore score is wonderful, and the movie does basically hit all the right notes. But it hits some wrong ones, too. And not subtely, mind you, they're very obvious. And that...sucks.

Sorry, PJ, but you needed to walk away from this one. The Hobbit, unfortunately, just needed someone else at the helm to bring fresh ideas to the mix. If anyone else pulled this stuff it would have been homage. PJ pulls this stuff, it's merely rehash. Would Guillermo Del Toro (who gets a writing credit for working on a draft of the script) have done a better job? Dunno. Is there anyone else who could have done it? Hell, I *really* don't know.

So, overall...and this is kind of hard...3.5/5 stars.

*Sigh*

I would have liked to have liked it more than I did. As I said earlier Fellowship left me a little cold, too, but I came around after the extended edition of the film landed on DVD and is now my favorite of the three Lord Of The Rings movies. Yes, there will be an extended edition of The Hobbit out on home video by Thanksgiving next year (assuming the fiery Mayan Apocalypse doesn't consume us all) and I'm totally looking forward to that. I think they plan on adding fifteen minutes of new and extended scenes? Fifteen or twenty though they cheat and add a shit ton of shit to the credits thanking all the fan club members. But there's also all the making of shit that is so in depth that you come away practically knowing everything you need to know to make your own $200 million dollar film.

One more thing, I will be seeing it again. I saw The Hobbit today in 2D. Wasn't in the mood for 3D. And no, not in 48 frames per second. The nearest theater showing the 48FPS version is an hour away and I'm not pissing away so much gas just so I can watch a movie that looks like a soap opera. But I really do want to see it again. I have no expectation that the 3D will actually add that third dimension but it does bring a stunning sharpness to the image and that there is fine with me especially with such a georgeous looking movie.

I so wanted it to be true. I so wanted a shift from the soul-less dirge we all have to face on a daily basis, a glimpse at a life devoid of mediocrity to one filled with hope and collaborative potential but alas...it seems Dec 21st is just another day.

Yeeeeeesh!!! The things I deal with freak a lot of people out, but I winced hard at that.

I'm extremely phobic about being punctured. So, naturally, I do things to avoid it -- like having dental crowns done without anesthetic. Or (last month) a colonoscopy. It's not that I'm insensitive to pain or anything, it's just that having a needle in my arm is like having a live rattlesnake sitting on my chest -- it screams "Danger! Danger!" to the point where jumping out a window to escape it seems like a good plan. And, BTW, I'm 50 years old and have regular blood tests -- the lab tech at my doctors office is in the running for sainthood.

But "anesthesia did not work...." Oooooh.

What a nightmare. I've dealt with immediate pain as a choice, but I don't know how I could face up to the horror involved while what happened to you was going on -- I go nuts for just a two-tube blood draw (the lab tech commented one time, "I didn't know anyone could not breathe for that long.") I'm glad you're bouncing back from it so quickly.

The funny thing is that I remember reading a while back that modern surgery doesn't actually "hurt" that much (evidently, measured nerve impulses from a pinched foot in a bad shoe are much more powerful than a scalpel properly used on the abdomen, and many internal organs do not have pain sensors at all) -- it's the unexpectedness of it that makes it seem especially bad.

There is also the matter of stability. The higher the earner the lower the stability tends to be. If you're some kind of performer or producer of creative works you can have a hot streak for a few years and then never earn better than a fraction of those years for the rest of your life.

Think about how many actors and singers who seemed on top of the world for a few years and never did much of anything after that big series ended or the big album dropped off the charts. The smart ones can make that hot streak the basis for staying comfortable the rest of their live if they don't go nuts with the extravagances.

Also, there is a huge difference between having a net worth of over a $Million and earning that annually. Taxes are concerned primarily with the ongoing earning in the form of income and capital gains. Property tends to be more of a local tax issue. It looks like CA is gearing up to drive that point home and many long time resident to other states.

Seriously, though, my lab tech told me that she'd done it without anesthetic before and thought that it might be the better option considering my weirdisms -- and it really wasn't that bad (not that I'd pay extra for it) -- the only problem came when rounding the final corner at the upper right, and they nipped off five biopsies along the way that I didn't even notice.

Chemjeff, here's my post from a couple days ago:
.
I received a call from one of my renters. Aguy I let live at my warehouse was passed out on the floor, inside the door. He said he looked like he was beat up. I went to the warehouse and Larry was still on the floor with a blanket. He had blood on his face. He came around a bit and I asked what happened. Woozy, he answered he didn't know. He said he had vomited and crapped blood the night before. I looked in the bathroom and there was a pool of blood on the floor. He tried to stand but quickly sank back to the floor. He seemed to have a temperature and was shaking violently. I called 911 and they took him to the emergency. They rehydrated him and he is currently in ICU. Tests will begin tomorrow to see where the GI bleed is and why. I may have saved a mans life today.

And, BTW, I was talking about a "colonoscopy" -- where you get a camera tube wedged up to your appendix via the scenic route. A "colostomy" is the removal of a large part of your colon, which leaves you holding a bag for the rest of your life and is quite a different critter.

Posted by: chemjeff at December 21, 2012 12:53 AM

Took a quick look at the House vote thread. Some die-hards who still think if Mitt only did this one little thing or that little thing differently, today would be different

The same guys also think the Let It Burn bunch are quitters because "the left organizes, so should we"

Well, "we" did organize, and it resulted in the MSM immediately and constantly sliming the Tea Party as crazy, stupid, and dangerous so that most of the GOP keeps them at arms length

Organizing is different for the Left because they have a media eager to promote and protect them, Hollywood making them heroes, and academia exalting them. Add to that corporations which are covertly sympathetic to their goals, and the acquiescence of a supposed opposition party that shrinks whenever criticized

I'm not dying on any hill for people who don't want to win

Ah, memories. I miss my big dishes. (I had two, a 10' and a 7.5'. The 10 was in my back yard with a polar mount and the 7.5 was on a steel sawhorse mount on top of my garage roof. I was a bit crazy back then. Haven't gotten much better, I'm afraid.)

It has absolutely nothing to do with closing the deficit. I don't know why the GOP, especially Boehner, is afraid to make a speech declaring such. It's purely class warfare, playing for suckers a legion of voters who are sure it's somebody else fault they're poor. They've made an art of appealing to the worst instincts in humanity. Thus freedom dies at the hands of the schemers who claim they want everybody to be equal and they just need to be given more power than anyone else to get there.

Romney desperately needed to deliver a denunciation of this during the campaign. Would it have offended some people? Hopefully, because several million Americans are in dire need of offending. This speech still needs to be made in a form that can be repeated on C-SPAN and played on YouTube perpetually. There needs to be a declaration of principles that calls the other side on their bullshit. The Left has declared war repeatedly. It's time to stop treating them as honorable opponents. Imagine how WWII would have gone if our military commanders regarded having the Nazis conquer the Western World as a mildly bad thing that wouldn't really change the status quo for them.

We need to take out some ads on prime time TV to drive home that the wealth held by the top 10% of earners in this country, who are already paying for most of everything the government does, is dwarfed by the spending for a single recent year. You could impose a 95% tax rate for everything over $5 million and it wouldn't make much difference in the deficit but would discourage a lot of high earners from bothering to work more than they needed to reach that bracket.

But they won't do it. That would require real principles on their part and actually practicing what they claim to believe. So let it burn. There is going to be suffering regardless but at least make the perpetrators own it.

That was kind of your sign of the apocalypse right there. A large organization dedicated to pushing for sane budgets and debt control, in fact the largest, and the GOP let the MFM and the left marginalize them.

I can't imagine, apart from blind hope, why people think the GOP is on our side.

It's not that the GOP and the DNC are the same, it's that on the existential issue of not going bankrupt, they are close enough as to make no never mind.

A few people have been screaming about the terrible insider consultants in the last election - was there actual sabotage?

That question should be a joke, but it isn't.

730 Five hours to go, if it's the solstice that sets if off (seems likely, since there are no Mayan clocks). So there is yet hope.

Where did this notion arise, that the "misunderstanding" of millionaire taxes are based on whether you earn a million per year, or are worth a million, total? It seems to have shown up just a few hours ago. Man, that is a masterful piece of brain-trimming. Like so many leftist arguments, it's an old joke from the sixties. I can remember asking my dad if we were thousandaires. When he got married, he barely was.

I'm a millionaire (b). Ain't no big thing, a lot of us here must be. Hold a job, buy some property, pay it off, stay married. Yet at the peak of the two incomes here, with some investment payoffs, we were never above the top two per cent of income of this part of a state that New Yorkers see as poor (and we are not in the rich part of it). On paper, in retirement, I probably could put in for food stamps or something.

Nobody could possibly think that the campaign tax promises and targets were set for people with a net worth of a million. Could they? This is some kind of double-speaking newthink, or vice versa. Every once in a while, leftists have a sort of contest to see how much convolution of logic they're willing to commit to. Sort of an auto da fe. Because nobody expects the Castilian separatists.

The thing you have to understand is that anyone who retires will have to have a nest egg. If it's been bargained with public-sector unions it doesn't count, but if you have it in a private 401K, it does. If you're 60 years old and need $33K to live for 30 more years, that's a million -- so in a ZIRP world, you'd have to be a millionaire.

This is all about raiding those who earn and save in the real world to benefit people in the political world, current and retired. And you'd best believe that the political world votes the political-world party line.

I know that she helped promote the tape so that her baby girl could be a STAR!!!!!Poor girl was always just a McRib away from having an ass that could sack Mark Sanchez.

815 Don't know if it has been brought up or anyone even remembers the Sweet Comet of Doom that fell during the reign of James Carter the . I was remembering and rewatching parts of the 1978 tv movie "A Fire in the Sky" starring Richard Crenna.

Only thing I remember was Crenna's character who discovers the killer comet sets out to the Arizona desert to plant instruments to record the impact and comes across a party of Pimas that had broken down. He radios his assistant for more help, camping out with them and is promised some rescue copters which, surprise surprise, never come.

The whole thing is on youtube if anyone wants some doom. I watched part 4 (each segment is 35 mins). The comet gets serious just before 21:12 (minutes/seconds- hehe!) with impact at 22:19.

But a classic line destined to reappear in any decent sci-fi/disaster flick is uttered at 16:18 (Let it Burn) when the Governors plane takes off with out clearance and appears to get flipped over by a big jets turbulence.

I did watch some of part 2 as well. NASA sends two warheads to nuke the comet which of course fails as some guy explodes them by remote. Pretty corny but the comet must go on! Thing I'd like to know is if the technology was available much like a more advanced version of the radio proximity fuse, that NASA could have had by the 1970s to detonate any kind of bomb in advance of a fast moving comet. I thought that even in 1978 not too many people knew about the handy little proximity fuses which helped the Allies greatly during WW2. They were first used in combat helping infantry at the Battle of the Bulge. And where was Richard Crenna? He was there serving as a radio man. Fun fact.
