Where Do We Go From Here? [Warden]

Do you feel like you’re living in a nightmare right now?

Most of us thought that all we had to do was get to the beginning of the New Year and we’d finally see the end of the most treacherous and destructive presidency of our lifetimes.

And yet here we are in this unthinkable place, wondering how in the hell we got here—how our friends and neighbors could betray us this way … how such a fiercely proud, prosperous and inherently decent nation could become so mean, petty and small.

I am not here to analyze this past election. I admit I don’t have the answers. I don’t relate to or understand an electorate that willingly loots from its fellow countrymen and, when that isn’t enough to satisfy its insatiably greed and snotty, self-righteous entitlement, smashes open the piggy banks of future generations and helps itself to the spoils.

Here’s what I do know: Economic calamity is inevitable. This past election was our last dim hope of avoiding it. We failed. The moment has slipped our grasp and with it the die is cast.

I don’t know how these next few years will unfold. One thing I am certain of: they will test our individual character greatly.

Are you scared yet? Don’t be. Many of us will arrive on the other side of this mess happier and more spiritually content than we’d ever imagined. Because this moment is an opportunity for those who see it in the correct light.

Here’s something I want you to internalize: All that anger, turmoil and hopelessness you’re experiencing comes from a feeling of helplessness.

But that’s all it is—a feeling. You’re not helpless at all. You only think you are.

Here’s how I know:

Winners win.

At the heart of every conservative’s worldview is this simple truth. You—not your lucky rabbit’s foot, not some cosmic lottery, not your circumstances, your parents, your race, gender, or disability—YOU determine the life you live.

Belief in self-determination is at the very foundation of our ideology. It is why conservatives champion liberty and personal responsibility while rejecting collective guilt, class envy, tribalism and victim-hood. It’s what defines us. It’s what we believe and it’s who we are.

And so I say to you, so what if we lost this election? Fuck your poor-me-ism and fuck mine too.

Winners win. Losers lose.

And you’re a winner.

Got it?

Good. Now here’s the action plan. Feel free to add to it in the comments:

Be better than them

Remember this saying? Living well is the best revenge.

Well, it’s got nothing to do with accumulating a bunch of wealth so you can show it off to your enemies and make them jealous.

Quite the opposite. Living well means living a happy, contented life filled with love, laughter and meaning.

Look at these clowns on the other side. They won. Conservatives are demoralized. The GOP is splintering. Socialized health care is now the law of the land.

They’re getting almost everything they’ve ever wanted, yet they’re as angry, dishonest and hateful as ever.

Did they really beat us?

No.

Not where it counts.

They’re empty inside.

They’re not winners. Winners learn, love and grow. Winners have strong work ethics, faithful marriages and unshakeable values. Winners don’t blame others for their failings, they work to overcome them. Winners believe in something greater than a man in the Oval Office.

Remember this: No matter what happens in D.C., no one can make you stop loving your kids. No one can prevent you from being a great mom, a wonderful spouse, or a loyal friend. These things are yours. You own your life. They do not. No matter what lies they tell about you, they can’t diminish who you are.

We all know who Barack Obama is and what he represents. He’s hateful, divisive, and duplicitous. He wants to harm us, to destroy our culture, our prosperity and our national pride.

He may even succeed. Remember, this is what the country voted for. You can’t save people from themselves.

What you can do is start cleaning up your own corner of the world. Love more openly and honestly than you ever have before. Forge deeper and more meaningful relationships with your friends and family. Smile, laugh, and enjoy the day.

Life is precious. You’re not here for long. Every moment you waste reacting impotently to that jackass and his enablers simply magnifies his destructiveness.

Reclaim your God-given influence and reach. Politics is not the only agent of change in this world.

Focus on self-improvement

How many hours are you wasting feeding your anger and frustration? I’ve got news for you—negativity is addictive and habitual. You know how I know? Try going an entire day without complaining or saying anything negative. You’ll be amazed at how many times you catch yourself.

Consuming things that you know will upset you doesn’t help. Log off Facebook and get away from all that trivial bullshit. Shut off the shouty cable political talk shows. Stop arguing on blogs with people who don’t get it. You’re letting a bunch of losers drag you down to their level.

That includes this place. As soon as it stops being fun, take a break.

You have more hours in the day than you think. You just need to break your negative feedback loop and re-focus.

Set some goals. Go do something new and different—maybe something that scares you a little. Work on that advanced degree you always wanted, go rock climbing with your girlfriend, join a book club, take a wood working course.

Challenge yourself and get better at something. You’ll be far happier than if you spent those hours shouting at your laptop monitor.

Get in shape

I’m not one of those Joe Fitness types that hassles everyone who doesn’t live to work out. I am in pretty good shape for my age, though, and I can say this about exercising—few things consistently advance my well-being the way working out regularly does.

I’m happier, more mentally sharp and just plain old feel better when I exercise. I’m prone to depression, especially in the winter. Working out is my primary defense against it.

Not only will exercising regularly make you feel and look better, it’ll save you money. Health care is only going to get more expensive, so you may as well get ahead of the game now.

I’ve learned through experience that you’ll never stick with a program that you don’t enjoy, so avoid setting unrealistic expectations and find something that you look forward to doing. If it gets stale, switch it up. Your body will respond better to different routines anyway. If you have trouble self-motivating, find a partner or trainer who will hold you accountable.

I prefer high intensity workouts because they save time, but you don’t have to kill yourself to get results. Just get in the gym a few times a week, break a sweat and make yourself at least a little uncomfortable. Check out your local YMCA for programs. There are tons of free classes if you’re a member.

Personally, I like doing things that are outside the box. I’ve done Crossfit, Krav Maga, boxing, you name it. Recently I started training Mixed Martial Arts. It’s hard as hell and it beats me up a little, but I love it and look forward to every class.

Outperform

We may not be able to beat the left at the polls, but we can beat ‘em all day long at life.

You have one big advantage over the Free Shit Army—you know it’s about to hit the fan.

Layoffs are coming to a lot of companies so start preparing the groundwork now to ensure that it’s the Obama voters, not you who suffer the consequences.

Tighten up your game at work. Make sure you’re demonstrating value to the people above you. Work your network and have a backup plan for losing your job. Know your friends and your enemies. People can get ugly when their livelihoods are on the line.

And be pleasant. It’s more important than you think. The dirty secret of any business where employment performance can’t be directly tied to the bottom line is this—people would rather work with someone who’s barely competent, but friendly and pleasant than a super achiever who is grumpy and makes their day difficult.

It’s simple human nature: People want to collect their paychecks with as little hassle as possible. They want their day to be nice. The company’s bottom line is a secondary concern if it’s even a concern at all.

This goes double for most managers. In any sizable company, your typical midlevel manager is just protecting his perks and hoping no one finds out what a fraud he is.

Improving profitability? Ha! What’s in it for him?

That’s why simply being seen as someone who makes everyone’s day brighter (or at least not worse) can often be the difference between keeping your job and being laid off.

I saw this first hand during the last round of layoffs at my own company when my boss got rid of a perfectly capable guy who had a “bad attitude” and kept a worthless piece of crap who had a friendlier demeanor.

Is it fair? No. But that’s life. Adjust accordingly. Don’t be a grumpypants at work because Barack Obama told another lie today. You’re only hurting yourself.

Oh, and if you have any say at all over who stays and who goes, make sure it’s the people who got us into this mess that go. I know I will.

Prepare

I hope to cover this more extensively in another post, but I want to go over a few basics here.

Here’s the deal: If you’re here on this blog you probably get it. Accept right now that you’ll always be in the minority in this regard. Most people don’t get it and never will.

But the fact is there’s a difference between “getting it” and preparing yourself adequately for a crisis.

Do I think we’re going to end up in a Mad Max scenario? No. And honestly, if it gets to that point, you’re pretty much screwed no matter what.

But what you can do is start thinking about what life might be like in a country like, say, Mexico and start preparing for that.

Because when the country goes bankrupt, predictable things follow: inflation, civil unrest, shortages, sporadic interruptions in power service, degrading roads, increase in government corruption, increase in violent crime, higher unemployment, etc…

So at a minimum you want to prepare for these things. Here’s a short checklist of must-haves. Again, I encourage people to add to this list in the comments.

• Store a week’s worth of drinking water for your family and own a high quality filter (I have a Berkey system) for longer term needs. Think ˝ gallon per person per day for storage. A 55 gallon storage barrel will run you 55 dollars. That’s the best, most affordable insurance policy you’ll ever buy.

• Have a month’s worth of food on hand for each family member. You can achieve this by stockpiling canned and dry goods or you can go freeze dried. I have both.

My freeze dried is from Chef’s Banquet. It’s the cheapest calorie per dollar food I could find.

For canned and dry goods, I recommend using the Sterilite 4 shelf unit as a pantry. Use ace’s amazon search box to find it.

• Own a firearm for self-defense and get comfortable with handling, cleaning and shooting it. Mine is a Springfield XD 9mm semi-automatic pistol with a 16+1 round magazine. I keep it in a handgun safe by my bed with one magazine pre-loaded with hollow point bullets for home defense. Get something now before they ban high capacity magazines like the ones I have.

I also recommend having a good quality serrated edged folding knife that you can carry with you in public for self-defense. If you want to go the concealed carry route instead, make sure you get training and consult with your trainer and/or the Moron Horde before buying your firearm. There are a lot of important things to consider.

• Learn some self-defense. The union thuggery is going to get worse. So will crime. Don’t be a victim. Learn some basic standup (boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai) and some ground work (wrestling, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu). Krav Maga is also a good practical self-defense system developed in Israel and taught here in the U.S.

You don’t have to be hardcore. Just learn some basics to the point where you could react effectively to a threat without hesitation.

• Learn a trade, preferably one where you can get paid on a cash basis. No matter how bad the economy, people still need welders, electricians and carpenters. Teach your kids, too. It might help them put food on the table someday.

As for me, I’m a giant hypocrite on this one. I’m not mechanically inclined at all. I’ve been making additional money writing for the last ten years, but that’s not a skill that anyone will be demanding in an economic crash.

• Buy precious metals and other things you can trade if we end up suffering from hyperinflation. If gold is too expensive, you can always stock up on silver. Buy physical and keep it hidden at home NOT in a bank. If the shit hits the fan, they’ll confiscate it.

If you don’t want to go that way, stock up on some top shelf booze. It’ll keep forever and you can trade it in case of inflation. If not, you can always throw one hell of a party.

Other things that can be value in times of crisis: Lighters, firearms, ammunition, medical supplies, prescription drugs.

• Have emergency medical kits at home and in all your vehicles. If you want to be extra prepared in your car, look into buying or making a basic survival pack that includes things like blankets, water, matches, a Swiss army knife, flashlights/headlamps, toilet paper, alcohol wipes, etc… Hide some money somewhere in your car, too. It might come in handy someday.

• Have an alternative means of cooking your food and a way to keep warm if your power goes out for an extended period.

• Be adequately supplied with alternative lighting. I have a hand crank lantern (one minute of cranking gets you an hour of light), a handful of solar powered lights, flashlights, headlamps (for when I need my hands free), and candles.

• Get a couple of 5 gallon gas cans so you can stock up a bit during shortages or prior to hurricane or tornado warnings.

• Buy a large plastic storage tub and fill it with all the things you wouldn’t want to go without if you were stuck holed up in your house for a month—mine has things like bleach, toilet paper, alcohol wipes, soap and personal hygiene products, a spare can opener, matches, lighters, batteries, etc…

It’s hard to do all of this at once on a budget, but you can accomplish it over time. The most important thing is water, which won’t cost you much at all, followed by food.

If you have a family to protect, I would encourage you to consider diverting some of your retirement contributions to this project until you’ve achieved a comfortable state of readiness. If you ever get in a jam, you’ll be much happier you spent $250 on a good water filter instead of putting it into your IRA that month.

You may get some resistance from your spouse if you’re married. I did. And I just went right ahead and made my purchases anyway, telling my wife, “I’m doing this. There’s no stopping me. I’m doing it because I love you and the boys and it’s my job to protect you. I hope that thirty years from now we can laugh about what a paranoid crank I was.”

I am by no means a survivalist, but I think taking a few prudent steps as insurance against disaster is the responsible thing to do. My advice is to prepare for the most likely scenarios and let God worry about the end of the world. You can’t prepare for everything.

Small things add up

With the country seemingly spinning out of control, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by everything that’s wrong.

My father used to have a note on his refrigerator that said, “Dear Mr. Warden, I don’t need your help today. Thanks, God.”

I think about that note a lot these days. At a certain point you have to just accept that some things are outside your control and be okay with that.

Whenever I find myself getting frustrated and angry at things I’m powerless to change, I say to myself, “Forget it. What one thing can you do right now to make your life or your family’s life better?”

Then I go do that.

You know what? It works most of the time. It calms and refocuses me. It helps me regain control and I get things done.

Times are going to get harder for most of us, but remember this—it probably won’t get as bad as it was for most people throughout history. We may have hit our peak, but we’re still incredibly lucky to be living in this time and age.

Start every day with an attitude of gratitude. None of us knows how much more time we have here. Live and love with all your heart. Be the kind of person your parents and children can be proud of. There are no do overs.

24 I agree with the preparing part about networking and sucking up at work. There will still be companies and they will employ people. They will just employ a lot fewer people than they do now. During the Great Depression unemployment was 25%. But for the 75% that did have a job, life wasn't too bad. Make sure you're one of the 75% and you'll be fine.

I don't think hyperinflation is coming BTW. Quite the opposite in fact. Deflation is coming. Just like in the 30s. Oh they'll try to inflate away the debt but it won't work. It can't work. Japan had deflation for 20+ years even as the Japanese govt tried to inflate its way out of the 80s bubble. Didn't work. NOt even close.

Gold? Who the hell will buy gold when the world's gone to shit? Gold is in demand when times are good. When times are bad, there's no demand for it.

The Media and Entertainment industries decide what gets discussed, and how much of our arguments are permitted to be heard. Most of the time they are just propagandizing for the Socialists by both reporting things in a one sided manner, and by not reporting things (or barely touching upon them) that hurt their side.

The Media are the primary ground forces of our enemy's army. Till we confront and demolish them, the other side is going to keep gaining power.

Chocolate and vanilla flavors. Both take a little getting used to, but neither is bad. I mix them half and half.

One shake at 6 am, and I don't start getting hungry until 11-ish.

I use about 2/3 a cup in 20 oz of milk, so each 5-gallon pail is good for about 120 meals. Or whatever. I don't do math.

Anyway, really good value for the price and very small storage requirements.

Paper, not so much.

Posted by: Invictus at December 19, 2012 08:38 PM (OQpzc)

________________
Sure gold will have **some** value. But not $1500/oz value. Say milk is $20 a gallon. You have 100 gallons of mil. Are you going to take gold as payment? What are you going to do with it? Who's going to pay for a gold necklace when they can barely afford to eat? Gold will be a luxury item which paradoxically becomes worthless when nobody has money.
Can you eat gold? Can you drink gold? Can you use gold to hunt? Can you use gold to make shelter? That's why gold will be near worthless if it gets to that point.

I have been told an Idea which I have come up with has merit by the few people i've mentioned it to. If things start to go to shit and you are wanting to acquire barter material, buy (or grab) mouthwash. It contains drinkable alcohol that can be distilled out of it. Because it isn't sold as liquor it can be purchased much more cheaply than alcohol designed for consumption.

150 Sure gold will have **some** value. But not $1500/oz
value. Say milk is $20 a gallon. You have 100 gallons of mil. Are you
going to take gold as payment? What are you going to do with it? Who's
going to pay for a gold necklace when they can barely afford to eat?
Gold will be a luxury item which paradoxically becomes worthless when
nobody has money.
Can you eat gold? Can you drink gold? Can you use
gold to hunt? Can you use gold to make shelter? That's why gold will be
near worthless if it gets to that point.

160 Really, how close is this collapse?

That's the question. In one sense, we're in default now, since we cannot even fund our current spending much less our future commitments. The answer depends on how long will we be able to print money that people will accept. If I knew exactly how long the game of pretense could go on, I'd be in a better position today. What I do know is that what cannot continue, won't.

It will happen when the American people start to panic, then it will snowball rapidly. This is not 1929. In 1929, the people were mostly rural, decent, hard working and able to suffer adversity without losing their common sense.

Today, the people are mostly urban, nasty, dependent, childish, and completely intolerant of suffering. If faced with adversity, they will burn the cities down starting with their own neighborhoods, then they will demand the government "DO SOMETHING!"

Most of them will die.

I'm interested in war. We need to fight the Left. We actually need to learn how to fight them. That's all I care about right now. I will find no contentment while they have power. These are my limitations of character. I despise the Left and am focused only on fighting them.

235 Great points made by le guest blogger. But I say save your cash and use it to buy ammo in lieu of gold. You can simply never have enough bullets- end or the world or no. Ammo can also be used as a form of currency if the shit really hits the fan. Someone else pointed out that the USA will probably break up into regional territories, which I would agree with. And most likely when it goes down, it will occur without anyone ever expecting it. I recall when I was in middle school and the Wall came down and the Soviet Union collapsed overnight. I wonder if we will suffer the same fate. Liberals like our guest Troll Jon by and large are the serfs of the 21st C. They live and breed by the grace of the government- be it a Tsar or what our so called Republic has devolved into.

239 THe other thing is - societies of Law only prosper as long as the Law is respected. If the People, or a significant number of the People think that the government has no validity, then the government has no validity. Period. And the society ends.

This is the case. Regardless if you agree with what half of the electorate believes - if they believe that the government is not bound by laws, then they are not bound by laws anymore. This is the natural response to the Left's 8 year long derangement about the 2000 election. You guys broke the compact, and proved it when you got in power. And like drunken college freshmen, you went stupid. And you protected the Community Reinvestment Act from all criticism until you brought the 2008 debacle down on us.

You then for years have, on the Left, been caught manipulating data, votes, and the Law itself for political advantage and to the desecration of the Constitution and to Liberty.

You guys have just won the argument. The collapse has already happened. You made us agree - the government can no longer be said to be bound by the Constitution. You proved it.

Once a plurality of a People believe that the government is illegitimate, then that government is, by the Founder's principles, no longer just since it must and can only take its power from the consent of the governed.

This government doesn't have it. You know that. You told us that for years. We now agree because you, on the Left, have proven that the Constitution cannot bind you and your crimes.

So yah, you won. And what you won was you convincing us that you'll never let the votes ever be counted against you. That you have permanently disenfranchised us, and intend to have us excluded in all parts of society. Those are the trumpetings of your politicians, your media.

And that's what we assume will be. From now on, we expect "show elections". Just like you've threatened on the Left. Just like the Left has done in every place it takes power.

The truth is, we don't know how much money is owed by the government. What we do know is that what we can actually verify is way beyond it's capacity to sustain without either inflating the money, or killing off a lot of people to which that money is owed. (SS/Medicare recipients )

Jon-Jon:

Do you really work at an ad agency in Chicago? Is it downtown?

How are things in the gun-free zone of Chicago?

Tell me about the murder rate there ... do you feel safe at work? What about when you work late?

Have you seen a flashmob yet? How about a few "yoots" just hangin' ... ever have to walk past them? Do you toss them a $20 ... or do you wait for them to move on ... I suppose you can read magazines at the local news stand or drugstore, and still look like a man, but at some point ...

I suppose you've been at this job for a while ... so your routine is "known". Has anyone followed you or your co-workers home? Do they know where you live? Might want to keep your eyes open.

Perhaps you should take up a hobby ... like playing Halo ... helps develop skills where there are none, and in a place like Chicago, where the politicians won't let you develop them, and the El can be ... claustrophobicly crowded, yet with not a friend, or anyone willing to get involved, to be seen ... nothing is seen, ever ... just ask ... now, while it's still an academic exercise ...

... this is what you voted for, isn't it?

Excellent write-up Open Blogger. I had to take time to read itdrinking a cold one. I agree about water, but it goes bad, right? There lies the rub. I bought some water storage bags ... they fold flat for storage, and then if you need 'em, you fold out their cardboard box and they'll hold 5 gallons. UV resistant and reusable and the boxes are stackable when filled with water.
Only problem is, I read somewhere that water will slowly become very stale after about 6 months, so you'd have to rotate your stock. Don't know about using a filter sysytem in that regard. Rotating long-term food items is an issue too. Again, good, positive write up. Thanks for the good effort.

Of course that assumes that you completed my FAS106 homework from earlier. But in order to do that, you probably had to ask your mom to go to Office Depot to get a calculator with more decimal places. She wanted to go to Staples, but you told her that is like giving money to that mean Mitt Romney.

301 Yip- you can get water stabilizers for long term storage (long term being about a year). Best case scenario is your own well and a filtration system, one that will remove chemical elements. Distilling won't work because chemicals, such as a weed killer, can vaporize and then reconstitute in liquid form, thus maintaining contamination. A Berkey system is good- Reverse Osmosis is also excellent.

308 I've had a similar idea, actually. But less survivalist and more political.

Here are a couple of ideas that I've had:

1. A smartphone app that would list, quickly, how much money a particular company (and its employees) donated to one or the other political party. So if you are at the store, and you have the choice between Company A and Company B, you can quickly look up on your phone which company is more conservative friendly, and choose accordingly. To prevent liberals from overtaking this app, it could have ads that only benefit conservative causes that you must click in order to even use the app in the first place.

2. A website that would be a community-building place for conservatives. It would have tips on how to live an authentically conservative life. More than just avoiding liberal asshole companies (like NBC/Viacom) but things like how to live with minimal/no debt, how to get started with homeschooling to avoid the awful public schools, how to get engaged with likeminded people in your neighborhood, etc. It would be a social networking place kinda like here but more advanced.

Thoughts? I don't know how to do any of these things but I think they would be good ideas.

“We will not have any more crashes in our time.”
- John Maynard Keynes in 1927

“I cannot help but raise a dissenting voice to statements that we are living in a fool’s paradise, and that prosperity in this country must necessarily diminish and recede in the near future.”
- E. H. H. Simmons, President, New York Stock Exchange, January 12, 1928

“There will be no interruption of our permanent prosperity.”
- Myron E. Forbes, President, Pierce Arrow Motor Car Co., January 12, 1928

“No Congress of the United States ever assembled, on surveying the state of the Union, has met with a more pleasing prospect than that which appears at the present time. In the domestic field there is tranquility and contentment…and the highest record of years of prosperity. In the foreign field there is peace, the goodwill which comes from mutual understanding.”
- Calvin Coolidge December 4, 1928

“There may be a recession in stock prices, but not anything in the nature of a crash.”
- Irving Fisher, leading U.S. economist , New York Times, Sept. 5, 1929

“Stock prices have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau. I do not feel there will be soon if ever a 50 or 60 point break from present levels, such as (bears) have predicted. I expect to see the stock market a good deal higher within a few months.”
- Irving Fisher, Ph.D. in economics, Oct. 17, 1929

“This crash is not going to have much effect on business.”
- Arthur Reynolds, Chairman of Continental Illinois Bank of Chicago, October 24, 1929

“Some pretty intelligent people are now buying stocks… Unless we are to have a panic — which no one seriously believes, stocks have hit bottom.”

Certainly if there was a collapse then nuke plants could potentially go offline and we have a situation like in Fukushima- potential meltdowns, which would spread contamination into the air and rain. hopefully that wouldn't occur but it might. If you truly believe that's coming, you should invest all your gold in real supplies, a single ounce of gold goes a long way right now, but Yellow metal is not going to be of much value for people who don't know where their next meal is coming from.

I invest in gold because I can see a sort of "soft default" on the way. When you look at the tens of trillions we have in unfunded liabilities with the baby boomers retiring, trillions in printing and IOUs, and an unserious electorate that wants to focus on stupid shit like free birth control, we're going to hit a wall soon, but that doesn't mean everywhere on Earth it will be dysfunctional.

A few hundred grand in gold WILL be worth something somewhere else, in the same way the smart Germans/Jews got the hell out of Dodge and took their wealth to places like Switzerland.

I would love an intellectually honest liberal to explain to me how the dollar is not going to collapse, and please don't tell me it going to be from millionaires paying more in taxes, that shit will fund the federal government for about 48 hours.

Please either peg today's S&P price with a date or with respect to price of gold then and now. This is the only way to truly understand the true value of the stock market price...as the Fed has been printing money like a drunken Senator. So the dollar has depreciated quite a bit in 2008. I think you will find that we're not actually doing quite so well.

387 You're about 20 years out of date with that thinking for Canada.
Check
out tax rates in Canada. Top marginal rate is 29%. It will be 39.6%
here in 2 weeks.Payroll taxes are 1/4 what they are here.Sales tax used
to be as high as 19%. Highest it is now is 13% and as low as 5% in some
provinces.Canada went full blown socialist for about 20-30 years. The
economy collapsed as did the $CAD. They figured out it doesn't work and
made drastic changes which are paying off big time.

I may very well be out of date regarding Canada, and indeed of all the choices of which I am aware, Canada does have much going for it. Far less population with an abundance of resources make it a good prospect for an ex-pat. A Canadian I occasionally exchange messages with informs me that most of the problem with Canadian government is the result of the influence of Quebec. He tells me that if they could get rid of them, Canada would be doing quite well.

My Fear is that the next 4 years are going to be a fantastic turnaround and economic boom --- DESPITE Obama and the Democrats.

But they, the insufferable pricks that they are, will take credit for what they tried to prevent. And the media, prick suckers that they are, will insure they get the credit.

From whence will come this boom?
Fracking and the Muslim attempts to burn down the MidEast.
The US will become the worlds largest LNG and OIL exporter and all that money will push back the debt and fuel the economy with new jobs and cheap energy.

Now try to get some sleep with that thought milling around in your head...

Posted by: TSgt Ciz at December 20, 2012 04:30 AM (E9rqc)

414 Two things: The idea of stocking up on precious metals is useless. If the world economy implodes, food, shelter, and survival will take precedence. Gold bars aren't edible. Food will be a valuable commodity and what ever you have, will need protection. Which brings me to the second point: Aside from all the items Warden mentioned, stock up on as many weapons and as much ammunition as you can. In the worst case scenario where society completely breaks down and the government goes full jack boot, you'll need more than one 9mm to stand your ground.

I used to think doomsday preppers were going overboard, until Obama got in office and the effects of his socialist train wreck kicked in.

Posted by: SFC MAC at December 20, 2012 07:41 AM (TLbgU)

415 @TSgt Ciz: Good points, but I don't think fracking can come on-line fast enough to help JEF avoid the coming assault from the enemy of all statists - math.

In fact, the ME going up in flames will (even if it's short term) spike the heck out of energy prices. That's honestly what I believe will be the trigger of the next down-leg - take an already over-extended population and make everything 2x more expensive as a result of OIL going to $250/bbl or higher.

Sure, fracking and domestic production will help offset that - eventually. But first the tree-huggers and dirt-worshipers are going to have to, literally, be tossed under the bus (which will take time), then you have to re-start large-scale domestic operations (which will also take time). And time is something we're likely soon to be out of.

Math is a stone cold biatch, and she always wins - just not necessarily on anyone's schedule.

428 I disagree with survivalist on this to a degree. Not saying that all those procedures and tips in this blog post are not good ones. They are, however if or when an economic collapse happens along with a more restrictive federal government I would suspect the country would fall into civil war based on regions. It is not going to be Mad Max or Mexico either.

California going bankrupt and the federal government demanding the rest of states pay for their debt would be one trigger. Because the country is so regional now (Red vs. Blue) I suspect the south and midwest will form one Classical US and the other from the Northeast and far West would be Socialist US. Both would fight to restore the country as they see it, with both attempting to expel those who support the other side from their territory and ultimately from the country itself. The battleground states would become real battlegrounds.

Other dangers could be foreign intervention. I suspect the majority of the rest of the world will try to screw Classical US for good, however I also suspect that Socialist US, unrestrained by Classical Liberals & Conservatives will become so out of control they might scare away foreign support. Also both sides will gain control of nuclear weapons (ICBMs) which will make most foreign countries not join. The Socialist US will also have problems due to the separation between the far west and northeast. The classical US will have another advantage because 60-70% of the military will side with it, because remember it is not going to be where people are from but their ideology. Conservatives living in New York will migrate south to Classical US, Progressives in Georgia will migrate North to Socialist US, etc.

Most likely I think, due to both sides having nukes is that fighting would be contained and then settle down, leading to a cold war between the two new US nations. At some point the sides would come to some agreement to either separate for good or rejoin into a different kind of federal system.

Hopefully Civil War will be avoided. America only once failed in preventing civil war, however I do fear we are approaching some danger points soon and unless our politics in Washington changes, more REAL compromise takes place and the media stops whipping up hatred and becomes more balanced it could happen in the next 5 to 20 years.

There isn't a force on this planet that could actually police the north woods. Insurgent groups could hide there forever. Less hospitable than FARK's jungles, but much much much much much much larger and more remote.

Canada is bloody huge. It would take Russia or China everything they had to try to occupy it and it still wouldn't be enough. And they'd have to cross an ocean to do it, and support their forces across an ocean on a different continent, not easy. Especially since Canada has basically all our cool defense toys.

Posted by: entropy at December 20, 2012 11:37 AM (YUttk)

Finland did not win the Soviet-Finish War, unless by 'win' you mean they weren't completely conquered by the Russians. True enough, Finns such as Simo Haya (arguably one of the greatest warriors who ever lived) were bleeding the Russians white, but the Finns were taking heavy casualties, too--casualties they couldn't afford. The Finns came to terms with the Russians and ended up conceding territory and industrial assets Stalin was after in the first place.

Had the Finns not come to terms, Stalin (privately) promised to eradicate Finland from historical memory, and would've done it. As it was, Stalin was concerned about the impression of Soviet weakness in not being able to conquer Finland in a few weeks--and rightfully so, since Soviet performance in Finland was one of the major reasons Hitler and his generals assumed they had grossly overestimatedSoviet military capabilities, which in turn led to its eventual invasion.

Your example doesn't hold up any more than Jews at Masada or Texans at the Alamo. Heroic, yes, but ultimately doomed.

Strikeforce fire starters and Wetfire are great but a cotton ball soaked in vaseline works just as good IMO. And for Gods sakes buy lighters, lots of them. 437 Seriously good post and worth reading. Sums up a lot and hits upon some truths we need to hear.
I can say from personal experience that the two most important activities one person can do to safeguard themselves are purchasing firearms and preparing. Even if the scope of the perparation is limited and the number of firearms is modest, both have a MASSIVE mental payoff. The confidence gained from both is mighty, it provides a sense of strength and independence that you are taking charge of your life. Preparing alone will cause a sense of ease, knowing that by doing some simple things you are more prepared than 80% of the population.
As for firearms, buying one puts you in touch with a natural right, the right to defend youself. This is a sacred right and only free men can exercise it. It is a right that comes with duties and responsibilities as well, which demands that you up your game as a free man. Also, owning firearms means you have a stake in legislation that impacts your rights. Guns ownership means you have skin in the game regarding your Constitutional Rights.
Lottsa good stuff, I will be writing my own blog on this subject in the new year. Hope some of you morons swing by and give it a look.
We need more postings like this, keep it coming!

438 The only thing I am stocking up on is gasoline. If the SHTF I am heading to my mom's house on the Florida Panhandle. It will take a lot of gas to get there though.

--It's paid for, so no bank can take it away.
--Doesn't get cold enough to need heat in the winter, not terribly hot in summer.
--Close to the Gulf and I know how to fish, my brother has dozens of rods and reels.
--Close to 3 military bases.
--Far from any urban centers.
--Everyone has guns.
--Property there will become very valuable for all the above reasons.

439 Your example doesn't hold up any more than Jews at Masada or Texans at the Alamo. Heroic, yes, but ultimately doomed.

I think you see the world as some sort of storybook. In real life, the need for plot does not drive villains.

Canada would be sure to cost far more then it could ever be worth to anyone else. Russia basically is already Canada. The Russian far east has all the vast untapped resources the Canadian north has, and the Canadian north has all the undeveloped inhospitality. Russia has no need of another Canada, it already has 1 more than it can handle with a shrinking population. And Canada is no threat to anyone. They are unassertive in foreign policy and basically mind their own business humbly.

If China for some reason determined what it needed most in the world was a Canada, and was willing to fight to get it, it would take the one right on it's border (the Russian far-east) which it's already 3/4 in possession of by demographic. It's not worth crossing the pacific. Once over here, all the powers this side of the world (whoever they happen to be) are going to resist any increase in eurasian influence this side of the globe.

The fact that modern militaries can project power globally does not make it automatic practice. The world's greatest hyper-power can stomp all around pissant Afghanistan and they can't stop us, but we can't actually do anything useful with it. Just march back and forth, forth and back over a hostile worthless wasteland. Dictatorial governments are far more pragmatic about what they occupy and why.

440 People like Jonmight be surprised at how many people are preparing for a serious economic collapse, and they are not crazy. Many of us are old enough to have parents who survived the Great Depression, when everyone was broke, and World War II, when there was rationing of everything including gasoline, food, nylon stockings, etc. My mother ate nothing but beans and rice for over a year. Her father left when the mill where he was foreman closed and he could not find work. Her mother took in laundry and sewing to survive. They were so broke that she and her siblingswere parceled out to relatives for a while to live. So yeah, I know how bad things can get, right here in America.

My parents paid off two mortgages and paid cash for almost everything. They said debt was the root of all economic collapses, both in America and elsewhere. My father never had a credit card, right up until his death in 2009.

441 Please keep in mind that in the greatest historical precedent for the US trade empire, Rome.

The Roman Republic got into wars constantly, it saw ever present threats and constantly expanded.

The Roman Empire attempted 1 or 2 disastrous failures at expanding over it's lifetime. Corrupt oligarchs were really only concerned with keeping the rent flowing from what they have.

No foreign empire ever came and conquered the Roman Empire and absorbed it, and no one could have. The mightiest empire of all (the Romans themselves, with home-court advantage) couldn't even keep that abominable trainwreck together. it fell apart from threats within, various local and immigrant populations revolting and warring over small areas.

If the US went down, the Americas would still belong to Americans, and the wars would be between Americans. There's enough Americans intent on controlling the Americas that we needn't worry too much about Eurasians, who are going to be having their own problems far more pressing and proximate.

442 P.S.

Your example doesn't hold up any more than Jews at Masada or Texans at the Alamo. Heroic, yes, but ultimately doomed.

The Texans lost a minor skirmish at the Alamo and then won the war against Mexico. Texas control of the Alamo sure as hell wasn't doomed, they still have that fucker.

443 I think this is my first response to any of the stuff I've read on this blog. I just want to say thank you for this. I've come to love this place and this is the reason why. I've been thinking many of the same things stated in this post over the past few weeks. Thanks again.

444 Time to read "Alas, Babylon" and "My Side of the Mountain." Maybe also pick up the Foxfire books. They are not only informational but they also give a glimpse into REAL difficulties that some Americans faced in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

I used to ask people that I first met "What would you bring to the table in the nuclear winter?" It just so happens to also make good bar conversation.

We just need to get our old hand operated well pump working and we'll be fine. Goats, chickens, dogs, a source of water, plenty of pasture and forest around us, and I learned how to save seeds from my garden this year. I finally worked on my husband enough to convince him to keep back in the woods. Yep. Feels pretty good. It's worth being made fun of. My husband's liberal boss and wife continue to harass me to this day about how I field dress animals and once killed a groundhog with a cement block. Oh well. Groundhogs are a**holes. They are also edible.

446 "No one can prevent you from being a great mom, a wonderful spouse"

Hilarious, since that's exactly what many conservatives want to do for ten percent of the population.

447 WARDEN,

You will never know what a blessing this post has been to me. I even did something I almost never do -- printed it out for future reference. It is "bread for the journey"! I thank you for this spiritual nourishment!

Your message so perfectly fits in with Christmas and New Year's -- and even Hanukkah: There is darkness all around, but the Light shines on -- and that Light is where our focus should be, and the reason we can be joyful no matter what the circumstances.

448 Bluto: Hey! What's all this laying around stuff? Why are you all still laying around here for?
Stork: What the hell are we supposed to do, ya moron? We're all expelled. There's nothing to fight for anymore.
D-Day: [to Bluto] Let it go. War's over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.
Bluto: What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: [to Boon] Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.
Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...
[thinks hard of something to say]
Bluto: The tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
[Bluto runs out, alone; then returns]
Bluto: What the f*@# happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my a$$ from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer...
Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic... but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons, but that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part!
Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.
D-Day: [stands up] Yeah, I agree. Let's go get 'em.
Boon: Let's do it.
Bluto: [shouting] "Let's do it"!
[all of the Deltas stand up and run out with Bluto]

449 Q. What they call a person who does the same thing over and over again, expecting different results each time?

A. Insane.

Ace, this was a great post. Only thing I'd add is that you should probably have three loaded magazines with your pistola, along with a small surefire-type flashlight. You can keep the extra magazines and flashlight in a small "bailout" type bag which you can sling over your shoulder if you're in your jammies. I found one in a local cop shop, but you can find a bunch all over teh intarwebz as well.
Be safe!

452 I cannot tell you how depressed I was immediately after the re-election of BHO. Like many of you here I knew this was truly the beginning of the end...certainly as we know it. I've been preparing for about a year under much ridicule but I don't think some of those assholes are laughing anymore. Thanks Warden for this article. It gives me hope, albeit with the recognition that we are going to feel some pain in the short term, but hope nonetheless. I've printed this article and forwarded to everyone I know. In the meantime I am ready to fight the good fight. God bless you and God bless this once great nation.
