3 State Department Officials Resign In Wake Of Benghazi Report

Here's my post from earlier today on the Accountability Review Board charged with investigating the Benghazi attack. While the board was prohibited from fixing individual blame absent near criminal negligence, they made it pretty clear where they thought the fault belonged.

Three State officials took the hint and walked the plank.

Doesn't anybody get fired any more? You know, kicked out the door in disgrace.

Eric Boswell, assistant secretary of diplomatic security, and Charlene Lamb, deputy assistant secretary of state for international programs, submitted their resignations, a senior official said. A third official in the Near East Affairs bureau also resigned, the official said.

Boswell and Lamb oversaw security for the Benghazi mission. Lamb testified before Congress about the security precautions. Documents show Lamb denied repeated requests for additional security in Libya.

Veteran diplomat Thomas Pickering, who chaired the review board, said the members placed primary blame "at the assistant secretary level, which is in our view the appropriate place to look, where the decision making in fact takes place. Where, if you like, the rubber hits the road."

In the meantime, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton promises to testify before Congress by mid January.

So, the highest level person to pay for Benghazi seems to be Susan Rice. In reality her, um, contribution, to the debacle was after the fact and probably tied more to Senators wanting to see their buddy John Kerry get the State gig.

Hillary will ride off into glorious, big book advance retirement and Obama will continue trying to piece together a second term national security team not filled with losers.

Beyond the politics, hopefully State will have learned from this very costly and realize that they will be doing more expeditionary diplomacy in the future and the need to figure out how to minimize the risks as much as possible. Our enemies are tireless and ruthless, we need to be the same.

The Rev. OK, morons: business opportunity. Some of you morons have money, and some of you are business savvy, a few both. I suggest that we pool resources, form a corporation, and start manufacturing ammunition or buy a manufacturer. Is this a viable plan?

The gov't has bought up insane amounts of surplus ammo, and is unlikely to be dumping it on the market any time soon. They can't realistically ban calibers of bullets (or cartridge types for that matter). That means there is an outstanding need for civilian suppliers, and those suppliers that are out there are all wedded to fat gov't contracts. A civvie-only manufacturer making a limited range of calibers would seem to be a golden opportunity. Look at how well Ford had done in the downturn by refusing bailout cash. Customer respect and brand loyalty are the most valuable of commodities nowadays, and the hardest to generate.

We'd need capital and equipment, but the location can be anywhere. Hell, we can even start by just manufacturing from purchased components, since the feds aren't buying brass or bullets by themselves that I know of.

What do you think? Will it work?

HAHAHAHAHA!

As to your idea, it is hard to be a startup in that field. business is irregular, most ammo manufacturers are part of another company.

I do see high-volume machines for sale occasionally, which is both a bad sign and an opportunity.

If you were going to do it, you'd have to specialize (and insure the Hell out of yourself). Like precision target ammo, exotic bullet materials and designs, etc. Small comapnies like Buffalo Bore seem to do okay, but they don't make "everyday ammo" so much.

They make ammunition more powerful than usual, BTW.

President Ford gave the go ahead. US Navy and Marines assaulted the island where SS Mayaquez was at. US boarding party liberated the ship and USS Knox towed the ship out of danger. Meanwhile the Marines did a helicopter assault where the crew had been imprisoned. Only after the assault was it found the crew had been moved and released. Marines were killed on this rescue, but after the fall of Saigon it signaled the US should still be treated with caution.
