Speaker Boehner: "Mr. President, It's Plan B or Be Responsible For the Largest Tax Hike In History" *drops mic*

A very strong statement from Speaker Boehner:

"Tomorrow the House will pass legislation to make permanent tax relief for nearly every American -- 99.81% of the American people. Then the President will have a decision to make. He can call on the Senate Democrats to pass that bill or he can be responsible for the largest tax increase in American history."

I think the Speaker has been disatisfied with the media coverage of Plan B thus far. By keeping his statement to 56 seconds, he basically gets to choose the content of the clip used by the broadcast evening newscasts this evening. Yesterday, Boehner said he was still open to negotiations with President Obama. This is a direct rebuke to Obama's noon presser wherein he said he would not negotiate over many aspects of the fiscall cliff.

House GOP has been whipping Plan B since yesterday. Americans for Tax Reform (Norquist's outfit) is for it, Heritage Action* is against it. I'd say Boehner's got the votes.

*I originally posted that Heritage Action is Senator DeMint's soon-to-be-outfit. A helpful reader reminded me that Heritage Action is kept separate from Heritage for tax purposes. DeMint will be at the later, not the former.

14 This is "Make it Burn".
Keeping tax rates how they are for the middle class (aside form the Obamacare taxhike) will not let the economy recover.

Raising taxes on the only group capable of creating jobs and increasing production will make the economy worse.

Even if Plan B passes, all it does is fan the flames.

As I am in the "Make it Burn" camp, I am all for this. Keep *my* taxes low while pilfering from those high-income Obama voters. They asked for it, now they get it.

In a perfect world, I'd prefer all rates be lowered, or at least stay the same, otherwise let's let them go up for everyone. But we don't live in a perfect world. We live in a very political world, one where we have leverage, but are not in control. Use leverage where you can. I am behind Boehner and this move for the time being. Do we raise taxes on billionaires making $400K or on billionaires making $1M? The Dems have won the debate no matter which number it ends up being. For all the bitching about Boehner (well-deserved in the past) he has handled this fight quite well. Despite continual predictions of caving, he has gotten through the preliminary period (when nothing was going to happen anyway), and now that it's crunch time, he's handed the ball to Obama in a way Obama won't like.

The picayune tax raise won't hurt the economy, it affects too small a group, and it's not a lot of money removed from the private sector.

Everything is still going to burn of course, but that's been a given since about 2007.

Also, 3M makes a paper cutter that looks like a toothbrush handle with a blade underneath a protector.

Don't buy cheap dollar store/party store paper. Pony up for the Hallmark stuff.

Use a tape measure to figure out how much paper you need. It sounds ridiculous, but once you get the hang of it, you will wonder how you did without it.

Sigh, a Speaker who knows how to play the media game could have made all the difference the last four years.

Not that simple, unfortunately.

It's easy to turn inward and shoot, but the real problem is the pervasive media at large. Always has been, always will be.

Tony Robbins and Jesus would get bent over if they tried to rally their case in the current media environment.

202 Some of these people whining about the "failure" to extend the tax cuts to 100% of the population are fucking delusional. If Boehner holds firm, we're going off the cliff, but we now have the cover we needed.

But even hypothetically, if you can have the same tax rates for 99.8% of the population under Marxist Obama with a lopsided Democrat Senate, that would be an enormous victory.

For those of you that want to join us in reality, you don't get 100% of what you want in politics, especially when you LOSE elections.

If Obama winning a second term only means .2% pays SLIGHTLY more than they did under Bush and a Republican Congress, that's called winning. And when you get to the actual dollars that are effected by this tax increase, you're talking about something like .01%.

Oh, and 99.8% of Americans would actually be paying less in taxes than they were under Bush. All of this while Obama and Harry Reid are in charge of the country?

It would have been better if he had said 'The President has said he is concerned about the middle class. The President says he is concerned about middle income earners. Now is the time for him to prove it'.

Reframe the argument. Are you more concerned about taxing the rich...or seeing a tax reduction for yourself? Time to play on people's self-interest.

Nonetheless, it's about time Boehner did this. I'm thinking he is seeing a TON of pressure.

Silly stuff.

I have been predicting for weeks that we're going over the so-called "cliff", and the recent suggestion that Republicans can honor their pledge, technically, by letting the new rates come into effect - even if for a single day(and then only partially reinstating the Bush43 "tax cuts") only confims it.

Obama loves to lament the "mess" he "inherited",but all he did to respond to it was the biggest heist in history (the "Spendulus") and a third massive new entitlement program (that heclaimed wouldn't cost anything, but he obviously knew that ity would cost a LOT). They know it only made things worse, but THAT'S exactly what they were after.

If he's not a Fabian Socialist pursuing Cloward-Piven, he's sure acting like one. People who say he's "worried about his legacy" are assuming fairly normal things about a guy who is anything BUT normal. Dispite his numerous admissions that he wants to "Transform America", the fools still have no idea what he meant, and pretend thatit means whatever Utopian nonsense they have in their own heads.

Obama WANTS economic chaos; even if the Republicans "cave" he will still sabotage the deal, and blame them. The propagandist MSM will provide cover. The public never remembers anything from more than even 6 months ago, and so trying to bend to public opinion is a fool's errand. All they would accomplish is putting themselves on record as cooperating in the country's financial implosion.

This will be a manufactured crisis. You can't follow the strategy of "Never let a crisis go to waste" if you don't have a crisis in the first place. Fast and Furious was a previousattempt to manufacture acrisis, and so this is an established M.O. for them.

What about his recent purging of Tea Party people from committees? You know - the only people in the country who seem the least bit concerned about honoring our Constitution and financial solvency, who are routinely maligned as "extremists". What was up with that?

Sounds to me like Boehner is willing to cave to MSM pressure, in the misguided idea that it will help the party somehow. He's ineffective at best, and it'shurting the party, and the country.

In two years, it may become obvious that 2012 wasn't some sort of change in national ideology, but rather a case of minorities insisting on keeping one of "their own" in office. Most of the people that put him back in for his second term have no clue what the real issues even ARE. Two-thirds of the white voters were looking for a grown-up to take over, and a great many would-be Republican voterswere so disgusted in general that theyinexplicablystayed home.

I think the point though remains the same though, we're actually paying less in total taxes now than under Bush. I consider that a victory in of itself.

I disagree though regarding the payroll tax, I want it as low as possible because I know Social Security is not going to be there for me. If it's going to eventually go bankrupt, why prolong it? it's just more money down a black hole. You can almost look at it as a backdoor way to privatization since I can take that savings and invest it myself for retirement.

But conservatives do need to address the 47% problem. EVERY single person who earns money should be paying both a payroll and federal income tax. I actually think that's far more important to address than lowering the tax rate of .2% of the population.

254 Boehner is an insider and part of the Culture of DC - that's the biggest objection people have to him. His mindset is that big government is okay, maybe just not *quite* as big.

The rest of us are looking at a gigantic behemoth sucking the life out of the country 24 hours a day, he wants it to take an hour off every other day.

*This* move is good, it's what he should do. Too often he's either mealy-mouthed or too cooperative with the Mad Spend And Tax brigade.

Seriously, deficits declining from 700 billion to 250 billion, then the Dems take both houses. Trillion-dollar deficits as far as the eye can see and we're approaching "critical mass" on debt (the point where everyone else has collapsed).

It's just nucking futs, but in DC it's a "viable position" or "just another way of doing things."

It's like negotiating with arsonists.
