You never know although having a reddish beard or cursing soul-challenged children might be a sign. Research to be released this week indicates millions of Britons carry 'silent' genes for redheadedness. There is strong statistical evidence for a link between hidden red-hair genes and a significantly increased risk of Tourette's syndrome, the neurological disorder characterised by repetitive involuntary movements and vocalisations called tics. Time to End the State/Local Tax Loophole? If voters in blue states like high taxes so much, why should the federal government lessen their burden when it's already running a mega deficit? if you're a Democrat talking tax hikes and you are NOT talking about ending the deduction of state/local taxes from federal returns, then you are simply NOT being serious on fiscal responsibility. Particularly since it's a tax that mostly avoids the middle class (NRO worked it out as "households in the $200,000-and-up range would pay an average of $5,166 more without the deduction, while those in the $30,000-to-$50,000 range would pay only $70 more"). But, of course, if that happens then a lot of high-tax states - which, shock! Surprise! vote Democratic - are likely to discover that their constituents will suddenly have a remarkably different (and more jaundiced) view over what exactly constitutes a reasonable state/local income tax burden. Mass shootings are no more common than they have been in past decades, despite the impression given by the media. What Actually Ends School Massacres Nearly always it's the approach of men with guns. And if they're already at the school, it ends the shooting much quicker. Fearing another attack, Israeli educators asked the military for assistance. But the IDF told them it was impractical to station troops at all schools and college campuses. So, the Israelis began training teachers, counselors, administrators and parent volunteers to carry weapons, and provide protection for their schools. While virtually no teachers carry guns in the classroom, every school soon had an armed sccurity detail, professional or volunteer. Realizing that Israeli schools were no longer a "soft" target, the terrorists began looking elsewhere. It would be more than 25 years before the jihadists would again target an Israeli school. And in the US too: But Assistant Principal Joel Myrick took another approach. Long concerned about the possibility of shooting incident, Myrick kept a .45 pistol in his car. When shots rang out on that October morning, Myrick dashed to his car and retrieved the weapon, then returned to the school in search of the gunman. When the assistant principal confronted Woodham, the gunman surrendered. When police arrived, they found Myrick holding Woodham at gunpoint, his foot across the assailant's neck. Jackson Toby on How to Prevent School Shootings This is mostly targeted at students who shot fellow students but the point is a good one - if kids are so miserable in school that they're willing to shoot other students, why force them to go? Why do white middle-class kids from seemingly normal families kill their classmates in suburban high schools like Columbine, Santana, and Granite Hills? ...Why should excellent schools incubate mass murderers? Because the more exalted the reputation of a school, the worse it is for a student who feels trapped in such a school. A more practical approach to preventing some mass murders at school would be to give children who are miserable at school for whatever reason more options. For those old enough to drop out and go to work, make it legitimate to stop school for a while and try a job in the real world. (The Swedes speak of kids being "school-tired" and do not stigmatize those who leave for a time-out; most eventually return a year or two later.) In the torrent of words commenting on the murders at Columbine in Littleton, Colorado, an obvious question was not raised: Why, if Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were so miserable at school, didn't they simply drop out and try a job in a nearby ski resort? The Modern Single Life or Just Urban Anomie I am not usually comfortable in a bar by myself, but I had been in San Francisco for a week and the apartment I sublet had no chairs in it, just a bed and a couch. My friends in town were married or worked nights. One Tuesday I had lentil soup for supper standing up at the kitchen counter. After I finished, I moved to the couch in the empty living room and sat under the flat overhead light refreshing feeds on my laptop. This was not a way to live. A man would go to a bar alone, I told myself. So I went to a bar alone. The story of how a team of doctors went to New Guinea in the 60s to help treat sufferers of kuru, the laughing sickness, and ended up discovering an entirely new kind of disease. On the professor's Fremantle kitchen table lies a black and white photograph of the little girl whose story he now recounts, so many years later. She was the second of five field autopsies Alpers conducted during that period. The photo is a still taken from some of the kilometres of footage he filmed over the years, to document the progress of the disease. The girl is leaning on a stick in front of some village huts, looking shyly into the camera. "That's Kigea," he says, tapping the picture. "She was from my own village, Waisa. A wonderful little 11-year-old girl who died of kuru." Her end was lingering and awful. Her father despaired and ran away until it was over; her mother had already long-since been claimed by kuru, as so many young women were. But Kigea's death led to the breakthrough that showed that kuru was an entirely new kind of infection but also one that could be prevented. There haven't any new cases since 2009 and this may well be the end of this particular prion-based disease. An Arctic route is shorter and doesn't involve pirates or Suez canal fees. A massive liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker arrived in Japan on Wednesday, becoming the first vessel of its kind to successfully test a new trade route though Arctic waters. Al Gore weeps. I posted this on the previous thread a minute ago. Then the ONT went up. So here it is again. . I received a call from one of my renters. Aguy I let live at my warehouse was passed out on the floor, inside the door. He said he looked like he was beat up. I went to the warehouse and Larry was still on the floor with a blanket. He had blood on his face. He came around a bit and I asked what happened. Woozy, he answered he didn't know. He said he had vomited and crapped blood the night before. I looked in the bathroom and there was a pool of blood on the floor. He tried to stand but quickly sank back to the floor. He seemed to have a temperature and was shaking violently. I called 911 and they took him to the emergency. They rehydrated him and he is currently in ICU. Tests will begin tomorrow to see where the GI bleed is and why. I may have saved a mans life today. The report singled out the Bureau of Diplomatic Security and the Bureau of Near East Affairs for criticism, saying there appeared to be a lack of cooperation and confusion over protection at the mission in Benghazi, a city in Eastern Libya that was relatively lawless after the revolution that toppled Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi.
Despite those failures, the Accountability Review Board determined that no individual officials ignored or violated their duties and recommended no disciplinary action now In an accompanying letter to Congress, Clinton thanked the board for its "clear-eyed, serious look at serious systemic challenges" and said she accepted all the recommendations. In her letter to lawmakers, Clinton said, "We will never prevent every act of terrorism or achieve perfect security" but she stressed that "our diplomats cannot work in bunkers." "We must accept a level of risk to protect this country we love and to advance our interests and values around the world," she said. I could vomit! What Lanza shows us is the limits of the obvious policy responses. He had all the mental health resources he needed--and he did it anyway. The law stopped him from buying a gun--and he did it anyway. The school had an intercom system aimed at stopping unauthorized entry--and he did it anyway. Any practical, easy-to-implement solution to school shootings that you could propose, along with several that were not at all easy to implement, was already in place. Somehow, Lanza blew through them all.

The Abolition of Gender in Sweden
The Progressive left’s attempts to divorce the idea of “gender” from one’s biological “sex” nowhere more advanced than in Sweden. Since males and females are separate and distinct, so much so that the gender-neutral crowd can’t even deny it, the concept of “gender” being nothing more than a “social construct” which much be destroyed in the name of “social justice” is being pushed as the next best thing. The Swedish have gone so far as to invent a new pronoun, “hen” as a gender-neutral replacement for “him”/”her.” By controlling the language and the words used to describe ideas, emotions, &c. the government can control what people think. This begs the question: What is Swedish for “Newspeak”? More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=743 Posted by: The Political Hat at December 18, 2012 10:30 PM (sZTYJ) 59

Hillary gets a "concussion", but never went to the hospital. And the "Review Board" is done. It's over.
"The Board found that certain senior State Department officials within two bureaus in critical positions of authority and responsibility in Washington demonstrated a lack of proactive leadership and management ability appropriate for the State Department’s senior ranks in their responses to security concerns posed by Special Mission Benghazi, given the deteriorating threat environment and the lack of reliable host government protection. However, the Board did not find that any individual U.S. Government employee engaged in misconduct or willfully ignored his or her responsibilities, and, therefore did not find reasonable cause to believe that an individual breached his or her duty so as to be the subject of a recommendation for disciplinary action. So, that's it for Benghazi! Done. Finished. Next! Gun Control! Posted by: Capt. Backfire at December 18, 2012 10:35 PM (mkb9H) 79

Communication, cooperation, and coordination between Washington, Tripoli, and Benghazi occurred collegially at the working-level but were constrained by a lack of transparency, responsiveness, and leadership at senior bureau levels. The DS Bureau’s action officers who worked on Libya are to be commended for their efforts within DS and across the Department to provide additional security resources to Benghazi.
Should be commended? And here's the real kick in the teeth... Notwithstanding the proper implementation of security systems and procedures and remarkable heroism shown by American personnel, those systems themselves and the Libyan response fell short in the face of a series of attacks that began with the sudden penetration of the Special Mission compound by dozens of armed attackers. In short, Americans in Benghazi and their Tripoli colleagues did their best with what they had, which, in the end, was not enough to prevent the loss of lives of Ambassador Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods, and Glen Doherty. At the same time, U.S. security professionals prevented a further loss of life and helped ensure the safe evacuation of remaining American personnel in Benghazi 12 hours after the attacks began. When I lived in New Orleans BITD I came across a man unconscious on the street late one night. He was not bleeding and was breathing okay, so I called for an ambulance. Next thing I knew a NOPD patrol car pulled up, two cops got out and cuffed him and threw him in the back seat. I doubt the guy would have thanked me later for that Good Deed.

"Surprise! vote Democratic - are likely to discover that their constituents will suddenly have a remarkably different (and more jaundiced) view over what exactly constitutes a reasonable state/local income tax burden."
Cigarette Tax Syndrome. One of the most popular tax increases is a tax increase on cigarettes, because very few of us have to pay it. People want a tax that they don't have to pay, but others do. So my suggestion, an extra 40% tax on everyone in the entertainment industry who makes more than $500,000 per year. We know that all the musicians, actors, directors, producers, and whatever the hell you call those twits on reality shows will be good with this because they believe that the rich, themselves, should pay their fair share. More revenue for the federal government, and maybe the actors, etc. will finally shut the f**k up with their liberal drivel. Posted by: nerdygirl at December 18, 2012 11:10 PM (jLiVY) 237
My aunt lived in Detroit in the 1980's when the city was Murder City USA, if it isn't still. One winter day, she looked out of her window and saw a body in the middle of the road. It being Detroit, she didn't want to risk going out there and called EMS. As she watched out the window, fear came over her as she saw a car coming down the street. She thought the car was going to hit the body. Fortunately, the car slowed down. The car stopped, the driver got out of the car, went up to the body, dragged it to the side of the road and drove off. EMS never showed up. The guy in the middle of the road eventually got up, puked in her bushes and staggered off. True story. Posted by: Stateless Infidel at December 18, 2012 11:10 PM (AC0lD) 238

No, worse than that -- an Obamalike move. He had not a clue about economics, and a for-real Commie VP. He is more responsible for the predicament that this country is in now than any other man. The hell with him. Posted by: Splunge at December 18, 2012 11:22 PM (2IW5Q) 299

That was one of the good things about that TV series, they kept a few Corsairs flying. Bit of trivia about the movie 'Catch-22.' Tallmantz Aviation actually assembled a squadron of 18 B-25 Mitchells for the movie. Then build a replica WWII air base in Mexico. Shot miles of footage. Jake, "FDIC- should have been a private enterprise function. Hover DAm, etc, same private enterprise. plus if is private you can tax it WAsn't glass segal repealed? shouldn't people who make bad decisions go bankrupt?" Your over threatened to the Commie threat in relation to the 30's #1.) FDIC was to stop the run on the banks and offers tremendous stability today still. People from all over the world store there cash here for those reasons. #2.) The WPA Projects were created to compensate for the collapse of the Private Sector. "Should have been" is different than reality, Wealth was distributed thru labor which helped prevent the moral hazard that we see today. #3.) Glass Steagal was modified during Clinton, which allowed banks to become insurance and investment companies...this contributed to the bubble. The point being.......The situation was horrible in the 30's, and some of the over reach by government was appropriate....its just a shame that after FDR died...the country didn't recognize that a lot of it had to end. But some niggling little sense is telling me that the TSA isn't held under quite the same scrutiny. Posted by: boulder hobo at December 18, 2012 11:41 PM (QTHTd) 401
27 As for that Tourettes and ginger thing, I do have relatives that are red-heads and I do curse a lot. A LOT. But, I always thought that was nurture rather than nature. Good to know I can blame it on something else.

#1.) FDIC was to stop the run on the banks and offers tremendous stability today still. People from all over the world store there cash here for those reasons.
A PRIVATE COMPANY WOULD BE BETTER AT INSURANCE #2.) The WPA Projects were created to compensate for the collapse of the Private Sector. "Should have been" is different than reality, Wealth was distributed thru labor which helped prevent the moral hazard that we see today. WEALTH DISTRIBUTION? REALLY? #3.) Glass Steagal was modified during Clinton, which allowed banks to become insurance and investment companies...this contributed to the bubble. THE BUBBLE WAS THE COMMUNITY REINVESTMENBT ACT AND JANET RENO THREATENING ABOUT SUPPOSED REDLINING The point being.......The situation was horrible in the 30's, and some of the over reach by government was appropriate....its just a shame that after FDR died...the country didn't recognize that a lot of it had to end. Posted by: DAve at December 19, 2012 12:06 AM ----------------------- Jeez, between You, Anna, and all the smart military bloggers milling about, I'm going to have to learn my aircraft more thoroughly. That said, after 30 seconds of research on Wikipedia, I'll have to say the last model - the PBY-6A. More power and other nifty design changes from the PBN-1. DAve be surprised at the number of -15 Faggots, -17 Farmers, and -21 Fishbeds are on the US Civil registry. No one seems to want the -19 though. The fuselage for that plane sits too high to be a -15 and its not pudgy enough, remember the -15 used a copy of the British Nene engine.
Flaunders, there is a PBY-6 that has been stranded near the Gulf of Aqaba since 1960. Someone was doing a world tour, landed there, and the locals thought they were Israeli commandos. Two were wounded and the plane shot up. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 19, 2012 12:13 AM (QdVWw) 508

Newark Mayor Cory Booker is looking like he will run for the U. S. Senate in 2014. He is also setting himself up to run for the Presidency.
In 2004, Obama was just some state Senator without any accomplishments, and was obviously a far left ideologue. The GOP blew it's chances to stop him while they could. The result is the situation we are in now. Cory Booker is looking to repeat that. We still have a chance to stop him before he becomes unassailable and takes the Presidency. While Booker may seem that he is a likable "moderate," he has already outed himself as an extreme leftist who believes in a "justice" where "equality" of outcome is to be mandated. See nick for additional info on that. We have our best chance to stop him NOW. Booker is likely far more dangerous than Obama ever could be. He must be stopped by all legal means available. "FDR, is how he had govt agents that went around the country side killing people's livestock to
'increase prices' I've had people from CA and MN bitch about this. Posted by: Jake in ID" According to my parents who were both raised on farms during the depression this did happen and was government policy. And from what they say, they had no choice as to whether to participate in this. The problem with farmers, according to my parents, was that they had crops, meat, and so on, but people couldn't afford to buy the crops because unemployment was so high. A lot of agriculture was regulated and controlled by the government. My dad said that his uncle would sell some stuff on the black market, because he would not have been allowed to sell it legally. Not sure why. Might have been livestock that the uncle had hidden from the government. Posted by: nerdygirl at December 19, 2012 12:19 AM (jLiVY) 523

"would sell some stuff on the black market, because he would not have been allowed to sell it legally. Not sure why."
Because of the Agricultural Adjustment Act. The intent of the AAA was to restore the purchasing power of American farmers to pre-World War I levels. The money to pay the farmers for cutting back production by about 30 percent was raised by a tax on companies that bought farm products and processed them into food and clothing. Yes, it was awesome. One of the greatest periods of wealth expansion in the history of the nation. When you fly high you crash hard and crashes do happen when the market gets overheated and lots of people with little understanding throw money at it. But there is no reason other than government meddling why the recovery was delayed so long. Glass-Steagal was just another example. Many financial analyst believe it did little for stability and killed a lot of opportunities. Technically, killing opportunity that involves risk aids stability but only in the same way that shooting your dog keeps it from digging up the yard. The sort of things that created the 2007 crash was the stuff of dreams a few decades ago and should have stayed that way. People keep going back to derivatives no matter how bad and inevitably they blow up. And Credit Default Swaps? How were those ever legal outside of Las Vegas? We have our best chance to stop him NOW. Booker is likely far more dangerous than Obama ever could be. He must be stopped by all legal means available.
**** Booker is probably the politician who's most effective at social media today. He is really something to watch. He seems to always have a knack for being in the right place and the right time and, of course, there's always a camera nearby. Something that did impress me about him, however, is that during the Sandy aftermath, he was personally running around and checking on family members of those on twitter. He has been running one helluva campaign for some time now and Christie should count his blessings that Booker is looking at a Senate run. The bad news, he will use the Senate seat as a springboard to a 2016 run. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at December 19, 2012 12:38 AM (piMMO) 577

Perfect example of bullshit meddling by the government. That tax wasn't paid by the companies buying farm products. It was passed on to consumers as all such taxes are and thus directly took money from consumers to prop up a small portion of the populace. This was largely due to the power wielded by farm state senators. After that bit of chicanery the outrages carried out on behalf of various types of farmers (increasingly large corporations) have have grown almost completely unchecked to this day. How bad is it? Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at December 19, 2012 12:42 AM (piMMO) The sleeping pills is probably so they get a better result more than for you. If you stay awake all night they'll get poor results. The mask and the noise keep some people awake. Some machines are quieter than others - but generally I find that "hospital machines" are the noisiest, most uncomfortable machines in the world. So there's that. Interesting, after my test they told me never to take sleeping pills. Apparently I'm so bad they're worried I'll stop breathing and never wake up. Yay. Apparently you aren't that bad. It turns out I do have sleep apnea and tomorrow have to do the test with the CPAP(?) machine.
They've advised me to take a sleeping pill to get through it. Wait, isn't sleep apnea where your breathing becomes shallow or irregular during sleep? Seems like taking a sleeping pill would be the last thing you'd want to do. Posted by: booger at December 19, 2012 01:21 AM (HI6wa) 660
The sleep apnea thing isn't too bad. If you get the right mask you can sleep on your side. Just get the one with the nose fitting instead of the one that covers your face.
People tend to shrug off sleep apnea, but it's actually pretty serious. It causes high blood pressure and strokes. Posted by: Ace's liver at December 19, 2012 01:23 AM (1+XRG) 661

I've never understood what is so wonderful about FaceBook but then I don't care for 'socializing' with people might just as easily be software on a server somewhere leading me on in a conversation with myself. Is the world really controlled by 14-year-old girls and people who act like them?
I created a FB account for one sole purpose: to enter contests. Nearly all of the companies running giveaways of some sort were using FB instead of their own sites to handle entries. Not a very productive use of my time but it's as close as I come to gambling. I recently got curious after FB sent me a 'Do you know any of these people?' email, to which the answer was no. I looked at the full list of suggested contacts the site offered and out of about 400 I recognized only perhaps 50 were names I knew and less than half of those are people who would recognize me if we met. Trying to figure out the 'Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon' type linkage involved here is astonishing in that some people think this is a basis for labeling a complete stranger as a friend. Anyway, the problem with CDS wasn't who was doing them but the insane definitions they took on. This was not insurance. Insurance requires you to generally have a direct interest in the thing being insured.
If you took out a life insurance policy on a complete stranger you'd probably soon get a visit from the cops wanting to know why you were so interested in this person's demise. Some people made huge money from betting on the collapse of the MBS market. They weren't taking out insurance against the collapse of their own position in MBS products They expected them to fail and so of course kept their money away from those items. No, the geniuses at AIG, who stood to take a major blow if the MBS market collapsed, thought it was cool to go all in and owe otherwise uninvolved people a huge amount of money if the collapse occurred. This isn't insurance. This is gambling. Posted by: epobirs at December 19, 2012 01:43 AM (kcfmt) 692
In government, failure is always an option:
"Systematic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels within two bureaus of the State Department resulted in a Special Mission security posture that was inadequate for Benghazi and grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place," the panel said. The report singled out the Bureau of Diplomatic Security and the Bureau of Near East Affairs for criticism, saying there appeared to be a lack of cooperation and confusion over protection at the mission in Benghazi, a city in eastern Libya that was relatively lawless after the revolution that toppled Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi. Despite those failures, the Accountability Review Board determined that no individual officials ignored or violated their duties and recommended no disciplinary action now. But it also said poor performance by senior managers should be grounds for disciplinary recommendations in the future. If it's OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea), your windpipe needs muscles to hold it open while you breathe, and when you sleep they switch off. These would be the same muscles as you'd use to resist being strangled and the effect is similar to them being overpowered -- except that you then wake up, and your brain reasserts control over the muscles, your airway opens, and you get a deep breath. All insurance is gambling. So is 'investing' in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, commodities, real estate, precious metals, art, or even your house. There are some legal definitions designating differences between insurance and gambling. The most essential is skin in the game. The matter at risk must have a connection to you that would result in injury of some sort if it were to be lost or lose its value. The question is why those simple considerations were so readily forgotten when it came to CDS. Posted by: epobirs at December 19, 2012 02:02 AM (kcfmt) 718

Read over at the Blaze that Cheaper Than Dirt and Dick's Sporting Goods are voluntarily certain gun sales.
This makes me really nervous. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more freaked out I became. Retailers are going the way of the media. "The government doesn't want guns, so we're going to stop selling them to make Uncle Barack happy, even though he hasn't even asked. We love him that much." Media is voluntarily lying for the Admin. Retailers are voluntarily halting gun sales for the Admin. This will not end well. epobirs,
Insurance is a negative bet, like playing the don't pass line on a craps table. You are betting that something BAD happens to you or your family, that will cause a payout higher than if you hadn't bet. The fact that by using actuarial tables, the company intends for almost every player to lose and the house to win in the long run doesn't change the fundamental nature of a bet being made. Apparently. Insurance is a wager against loss. Gambling is simply a wager. No amount of payout from a life insurance policy is going to remove the loss of the person, assuming you liked them. Your health insurance may get you a first rate hospital room if you get hit by a car but most people would rather skip the experience. Gambling is something you do to try to make an easy profit. Insurance is something you do to minimize loss. Posted by: epobirs at December 19, 2012 02:15 AM (kcfmt) 731
Well, I had life insurance until age 50. It seemed like the prudent thing to do, wife and small kids would be taken care of in case of my unfortunate demise.
After age 50, kids are on their own. Wife is OK. House is paid for. So I cut it loose. I think they call it being self insured. AND I remember being totally pissed off that I DID NOT die and collect. Of course, that feeling passed. Posted by: navybrat at December 19, 2012 02:20 AM (CF7ax) 732
729 It is fact that Bigearship has to pause on pulling the lever on the complete plan because he knows how many people are armed to the teeth. He would lose a civil war right now and he KNOWS IT! In baccarat, the players bet against the house. The House wins all ties, which is where their main edge comes from. However, the deal passes from player to player after each hand, and each player has the option of playing 'the bank'. This means they take on all the other players bets, and THEY win all ties on that hand, just like the bank.

The moment I heard about Dick's and CTD halting sales I began to consider the gun runners I met 40 years ago. They were trading guns to Mexicans for Smoke out in New Mexico. They lived in the desert near a friend of mine. He said on weekends they would get drunk and high and fire automatic weapons into a hill near their place. The Sheriff knew about them but did not have the manpower and so stayed away. Now in Mexico right now, the place is awash with guns; lots of military battle rifles, grenades, semi-autos, etc. The Mexican Constitution says the people have aright to bear arms but regulatory laws say they can't possess anything the military has, so the only legal gun is a .22 or .38 revolver or some shotguns and hunting rifles. In a very short time this will be Obama's play. I have gone back and forth on this but I lean toward thinking this will start a Civil War. Little outbreaks here and there and then finally a State will stand up and get swatted down and then it will be game on. Louisiana recently passed a law reiterating that the Feds cannot make an end run around the Second amendment and I really can't see how they can get anything pushed through with any teeth unless they go all out with XOs and tax surcharges and all the tricks Barry supported in Illinois. Getting rid of high capacity magazines like Ace advocated (well, he said he didn't see any reason to have them) on a federal level will not stand by itself--they have to "ban" some guns. That won't fly in the age of NDAA, TSA, Holder's DoJ, the "Transformation" and the coming end to our economy. Posted by: Daybrother is very very nervous at December 19, 2012 02:32 AM (+paCV) 747

The thing about civil wars is you never win if a united military supports the government. Technology has shifted the power balance away from hit-and-run guerilla tactics, so I'm not sure how valuable an armed populace would be. Either you get much of the military on your side or you lose.

>> In Roulette the easiest odds are 48 to 100. That is if you just put your
bet on red or black. Double your bet if yo win. I read where that is the best gambling deal you will get in a casino. Two points for you there -- First, make sure the wheel only has ONE green zero; some have two which makes your odds twice as bad. The tightest table game is craps, where the house allows 10:1 or better backing of your line bet. You must fully back each rolled number, and you can cut the house edge down to well under 1%. You can't go venturing off into side bets, however, as the odds there are considerably worse. The real best table play in the house is blackjack, if the rules are favorable (they vary all over the place) and you know how to do a rudimentary count and how to use 1:4 bet variation. You can get the house odds down to near zero doing this, but it takes study and practice. Posted by: GnuBreed at December 19, 2012 02:39 AM (ccXZP) 754
I read where that is the best gambling deal you will get in a casino.
Blackjack, using a point system, proper bankroll management(higher bets with deck favorable, lower when unfavorable), favorable table position(your far left, dealer's far right), fullish tables(more visible cards out by the time it gets to you), can pay better than even odds, even in multi deck games. Its a grind though, you're working hard to eek out a 1% or so advantage, and if the casinos catch on they'll blacklist you. I was into this about 25 years ago and got pretty good at it in practice. In Vegas it took me about 24 hours of straight play to eek out a few hundred dollars profit at a $5 table. Posted by: @PurpAv at December 19, 2012 02:39 AM (Evf4b) 755

"And we won Vietnam and Afghanistan? "
Vietnam was 50 years ago. Things have changed a lot since then. And even so, the war ended with a conventional tank assault, not with guys in pajamas laying booby traps. We *did* win in A-stan. The problem is it's not a real country. The central government has *never* had a monopoly on the use of force there. The problem isn't the winning, the problem is governing the place. That's not a military problem. The only way we could make it a real country is to obliterate the local civilization and rebuild it in our image. That would take three generations and just isn't doable politically. A civil war in the US would be different for all sorts of reasons. Like I said, unless the rebels managed to win over much of the military they would lose pretty quickly. Posted by: Ace's liver at December 19, 2012 02:46 AM (1+XRG) 760

They're Quislings, but people forget. And worse, it wasn't just giving in to the power-mad control freaks, it was pushing violations of civil rights that would hurt competitors more than it hurt Ruger. So, against civil rights, surrendering to thugs on others' behalf, *and* rent-seeking and corruption. I know some people love their Rugers, but Ruger didn't love them. >> Depends on how many decks are in the shoe.
Yes. Each pair of decks added to a shoe reduces your potential edge by 0.1% to 0.2%. So ideally you want to look for single deck or double deck games. Nowadays, for single deck games they shuffle after every hand, wiping out any edge for playing single deck. So double deck is the best right now. The goal isn't to "win" in asymmetric warfare. Its to raise the cost to the other side so high that they don't want to be there anymore. The more diffuse a resistance is, the harder it is to crack. How do you go about hunting down a solo guy who goes out and snipes one opponent every 6 months or a a year? You don't. You can't. His pattern is lost in the noise. This is why the FBI believes there's 30 or so active serial killers working the USA in any given year but is pretty much powerless to stop them until they escalate or make a mistake and suddenly raise above noise level. Failed resistances organize too much in the early stages, are too vocal, and get too greedy. Posted by: @PurpAv at December 19, 2012 02:51 AM (Evf4b) 766

Meh. There are lots of ways to funnel favorable kill zones. All it takes to cripple an interstate highway is a hijacked tanker truck full of fuel. I learned that about 20 years ago when one overturned down around Boca Raton and burned. All the asphalt burned off into loose pebbles for about a 60' stretch across all the lanes. 53% of the country is just fine with having the government run their lives.
That's OK. If they don't actively resist the revolution, then they're not a factor. Once the EBT cards start to bounce, their allegiance will waver. Historically, it only takes about 10-30% support to pull off revolutions and coups. You don't need a majority. You just need the majority to not care one way or the other. Bullets don't rise. Rifles are sighted so that the barrel is pointing slightly upwards. The bullet is continually falling, even as it nears the top of the ballistic arc. Posted by: Kristophr at December 19, 2012 03:26 AM (wYVte) 816

If he has a 1 in 7 twist, then the lightest bullet he can fire without risk of keyholing is a 62 grn. He should be able to fire the heavy bullets fine with that. Although a 14.5"/16" barrel with a 1 in 7 is kinda weird. A short barrelled bullet hose should have a 1 in 9 in order to be able to shoot anything he can stuff in the magazine. There was an incident in Southern California not long ago in which a trailer rig caught fire and the driver stopped under an over pass before fleeing the cab in hopes it would minimize the travel of flying debris. It possibly worked but the intense fire wrecked the overpass and cut off an entire neighborhood from easy access. Getting in and out of my own neighborhood could become a real chore if something happened to the nearby stretch of the I-5 and the road that parallels it. That is an incomplete analysis. As I mentioned already, you don't want that bet to pay off. That is a simple guideline for distinguishing insurance from gambling. The analyst who bet big on the MBS collapse had nothing to lose from being right. They weren't invested in MBS products and told anyone who would listen this was going to blow up in a big way. Michael Lewis documents this in 'you have to laugh to keep from crying' fashion in 'The Big Short.' Allowing AIG to be both a bank and a insurer was not the cause of the disaster. Allowing AIG to be a bank, an insurer, and a casino was a big problem. Posted by: epobirs at December 19, 2012 04:32 AM (kcfmt) Posted by: epobirs at December 19, 2012 04:36 AM (kcfmt) 823
The magazine capacity issue is is not to be taken lightly. Ace hasn't really thought it through because he isn't a gun guy and really only supports gun rights on a philosophical level.
Think about it in terms of Obama claiming that he can tell when someone has made enough money. The sheer wrongness of this is easy for most people not ruled by class envy to understand. OK, now imagine Obama declaring that there is a point when you have enough bullets. No. Fuck you, Barry. The only one who gets to make that determination is me. Let the government decide how many bullets you are allowed to have at the ready and you'll find that number under constant attack by those who want to see it reduced ever further. Give them a few years and the only personal firearm permitted will be a Derringer. Look at all of the areas where they've whittled away at our choices and taken command of 'normal' until the argument becomes over things that were once far left and really far left. Don't give them an inch. They'll take and immediately start pushing for the next inch. Posted by: epobirs at December 19, 2012 04:52 AM (kcfmt) 824

yep. somehow everything has gone off course. it is interesting in discussions about taxes no one discusses the whole idea of "fair". Everyone in the media is comfortable discussing which numbers are fair, no one even discusses whether it is fair for someone to pay a higher dollar value never mind a higher percentage. next time someone goes out to dinner instead of dividing the bill up by who ate what maybe it should be divided up by who earns how much. I'll be the one to protect from your enemies and your choices son, they're one and the same and I must isolate you, isolate and save you from yourself." And of course, the begging that we see from the GOP: "Just stay with me, safe and ignorant." Fuck 'em. LiB? Posted by: Not Ready to Unsock at December 19, 2012 05:10 AM (BgIBZ) 829

Every time Obama or one of his surrogates gets up on their pulpit to talk about the necessity of taxing the wealthy, I want to slug them and launch into a lecture about the simple math underlying the big lie. They could jack rates for the top three brackets to their historical highest levels and, assuming it doesn't put a major dent in revenues, it wouldn't make a noticeable dent in the deficit and only push back by a few months the date when the interest on the debt is greater than the GDP of the nation. Hell, you could seize outright the entire personal wealth of the 100 richest Americans and it wouldn't knock down the deficit but a fraction, and that is trick you can pull only once. You soon run out of kulaks. Nothing has made me feel contempt for my countrymen more than this class warfare idiocy and how they lap it up. There is a certain grim satisfaction in knowing that a collapse would have the highest body count among the core Obama voters in the cities. Stop stocking the store shelves and they'll soon eat each other. Posted by: epobirs at December 19, 2012 05:20 AM (kcfmt) 833

Posted by: yankeefifth at December 19, 2012 05:08 AM (Z9EHQ) Around 262,000,000 people were killed by governments in the 20th century. All civilian murders added together don't even register. Oh, they sure as Hell matter to the people around them, but if you want to talk about trade-offs, that's the Godzilla of trade-offs. So people need to find another way, the price is too high. If he has a 1 in 7 twist, then the lightest bullet he can fire without risk of keyholing is a 62 grn. He should be able to fire the heavy bullets fine with that.
Posted by: Kristophr at December 19, 2012 03:31 AM (wYVte) ... Where to begin. The most accurate way to tell what twist rate you need is to know the mass profile of a bullet, where the mass is related to the center and how that relates to the bearing surface. The second most accurate way is to just go by length - within a caliber with conventional construction, you'll get pretty close. The next method is bearing surface - but the difference between a round-nose and a spitzer overwhelms this. Bullet weight is the least useful way to judge what twist rate you need. You may be close if you follow a chart, or you may not. 1:7 will handle *some* 40-45 grain bullets. It depends on the design. 55-grain bullets should be fine unless they're stubby little things. There are also other factors that can cause instability, including bullet materials and barrel condition. Ultimately you need to test a configuration before you buy a ton of ammo. If you have a problem with 55s, try Winchester 45-grain commercial. If that's fine, it's something else (they are particularly concentric and consistent and a little longer than typical 40-ishes, IIRC).
