That Didn't Take Long: Democrats Reject Boehner's Plan B

Democrats were for raising the income floor for tax hikes before they were against it.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney issued a statement saying the president remains willing to work with Republicans to reach a bipartisan solution to the fiscal cliff and he is “hopeful” they will.

The president, however, “is not willing to accept a deal that doesn’t ask enough of the very wealthiest in taxes and instead shifts the burden to the middle class and seniors,” Carney said. “The Speaker’s ‘Plan B’ approach doesn’t meet this test because it can’t pass the Senate and therefore will not protect middle class families, and does little to address our fiscal challenges with zero spending cuts.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., was also swift to reject the plan.

“It will not protect middle-class families because it cannot pass both Houses of Congress. The Senate bill is the only ‘plan B’ that can be signed into law and prevent taxes from rising by $2,200 on the average middle-class family,” Reid said in a statement. “Now is the time to show leadership, not kick the can down the road. Speaker Boehner should focus his energy on forging a large-scale deficit reduction agreement. It would be a shame if Republicans abandoned productive negotiations due to pressure from the Tea Party, as they have time and again.”

Not asking "the rich to pay enough"? Obama ran on raising the taxes of "millionaires and billionaires". Suddenly $200K-$999K makes you "a millionaire".

Boehner's plan to only raise taxes on people making a million a year can't pass the Senate? Hey Ripper Reid, it already has.

Oh and the White Houses line of bull about their not being spending cuts (as if they care about that)? More bull. Plan B leaves sequestration in place, so there are your spending cuts.

From a Republican perspective Boehner's Plan B is a pretty strong play. The GOP won't technically be voting to raise taxes (they'll just let current law, the expiration of the Bush rates, take its course) but will be protecting a lot more people from tax hikes.

From a "Let It Burn" perspective, it's a terrible idea. Anything that plays into the myth that all we need is a little tweak in revenue and some relatively minor spending cuts to pull us out of our entitlement and spending death spiral, is simply a band aid that will only make the inevitable reckoning that much worse.

But no one expects Boehner, or any elected leader, to be a Let It Burn guy. They are just trying to kick the can down the road long enough for someone else to be in the hot seat when it all comes down.

DISGUSTING: New Military Judge In Ft. Hood Terror Trial Will Allow Nidal Hasan To Keep His Beard During Proceedings…

God forbid we offend al-Qaeda.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — The Army psychiatrist charged in the deadly Fort Hood shooting rampage will be allowed to keep his beard during his military trial.

The new judge overseeing Maj. Nidal Hasan’s case told Hasan during a Tuesday hearing that the beard is a violation of Army regulations. But the judge, Col. Tara Osborn, said she won’t hold it against him.

Hasan answered her questions, saying he grew the beard voluntarily. He previously said his Muslim faith requires it.

Hasan faces the death penalty if convicted in the 2009 rampage that killed 13 and wounded more than two dozen others on the Texas Army post. His trial date hasn’t been set.

A military appeals court recently ousted the former judge and tossed his order requiring Hasan to be forcibly shaved before his trial.

62 "But no one expects Boehner, or any elected leader, to be a Let It Burn
guy. They are just trying to kick the can down the road long enough for

Except the end of the road is getting awfully close.

There is an old rule taught to aspiring doctors about diagnostics, to wit: "When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras."

When I myself hear hoofbeats these days, I don't think of horses or or zebras. I think of bond market vigilantes. The same bond market vigilantes who took down Greece. They are saddled up and on their way here, make no mistake about it.

The "point of no return" on the debt to GDP ratio is generally reckoned to be 120%. Beyond that, everyone who has tried it has ended up in a death spiral of incurring new debt simply to pay the interest on old debt.

The USA is currently at about 104% debt to GDP.

Barkynomics has added about 6% a year to that total in each of the last three years and there are no grounds to expect that will change or improve in the next three.

Which means that, before the end of Obama's second term, we are going to reach and pass that "point of no return" on the debt. Well before that happens, I expect the bond market vigilantes to show up with further US sovereign debt ratings downgrades and the like, that will force interest rates to rise no matter what The Benbernank does.

Of course, this fragile recessioncovery we have now is barely staying going even with interest rates this low. One serious uptick in rates and it's game over, man, game over.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d112:s.3412:

That bill raises taxes on those making over $250K, not $1M, but would get the tax issue on the middle class off the table.

I would tell Republicans to 'sell' it a something they don't want, don't think will help, and could possibly hurt the economy, but because the President and Democrats want it, they should get it, but will be responsible for the results.

Then, allow most House Republicans to vote present (or abstain) from the final vote.

On top of ObamaCare causing hundreds of thousands of people to loose their full time jobs to part timers working less than 30 hours, all you suckers that get to keep that FT job and have health insurance are as of Janurary 1, 2013 NOW GOING TO BE TAXED ON YOUR EMPLOYER'S CONTRIBUTION TO BUYING YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE AS INCOME.

EVEN IF THE BUSH TAX CUTS WOULD STAY FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS THEY ARE GOING TO BE TAXED MORE NONE THE LESS ON AN EXTRA $10K TO $14K OF INCOME THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY TAX FREE.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEARS FROM THE DEMOCRAT PARTY. But of course this is all the GOP's fault for not wanting to have Clinton level taxes on incomes over $250k.

Just announce that the House has passed a budget, hell they passed one last year too. So until the Senate (not POTUS) moves a budget bill of their own the conference debate can't start. Therefore, quoting Eric Cartman, "Screw you guys! We are going home. Merry Christmas guys, see ya next year."

Then board planes and leave town. Make no House Republicans available for media interviews. Dead silence. The focus would then have to move to Reid since he would be the only story. Within a week he would call Boner and offer him ANYTHING in exchange for a CR. And Obama would sign it.

Reid can't open debate on a budget. Not won't, can't. It would be electoral suicide and he knows it. When we have the strong hand why do we refuse to play it, instead allowing our enemy to write a narrative where we can only choose how we want to lose?

Now, obviously, it is not the only way to begin the hard work of balancing our budget and protecting the middle class and seniors. We established the ground rules for what would be a sufficient alternative to the current plan. If the President or the Democrats propose something that meet or better that standard, we will not stand in the way, so long as they send us a clean bill that only deals with this issue.

203 No Joke: Ben Affleck’s Name Floated For John Kerry’s Senate Seat…

First reports of Ashley Judd in Kentucky, now this. And if he did run (I doubt he will) don’t think for a second the sheeple in this state wouldn’t vote for him.

Via Politico:

Don’t rule it out… The actor is on a list of possible successors to Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, according to CBS Boston.

Political analyst Jon Keller has heard Affleck’s name “tossed around” among others – including Scott Brown, Rep. Mike Capuano, Rep. Ed Markey and Rep. Stephen Lynch – to take Kerry’s seat, he reported on Tuesday. If President Barack Obama does appoint Kerry as secretary of state, as expected, a special election will be held to fill his spot.

Affleck, a Democrat, grew up in Cambridge and actively campaigned for Elizabeth Warren who won a Massachusetts Senate seat last month.

Hell we already have a second rate comedian in the Senate

No, Walter. We're not wrong on any of the major issues (or any of the lesser issues, if it comes to that), but you are right that President Obama, since he's President, will more or less have his way for awhile, but only for awhile, and then events will largely be out of his--or anyone's--control. Not even the sudden, explosive growth of the energy industry caused by the natural gas boom will prevent the catastrophic implosion of the economy caused by the spending and entitlements crisis. The super-villain's doomsday countdown clock has already counted down. The hero failed and he didn't get the girl. And the rest of us, the bit players and Bond girls? We're cooked, and when I say 'we' I mean all of us, you and me. The President and his allies and supporters, caught up in some kind of Keynesian delusion, think unsustainable debt can be sustained forever, given the right media spin and creative accounting tricks.

The economic collapse, when it comes, won't be noticed by the general public for a little while because the media and the federal government will do all they can to obscure the awful truth, just as they've been doing with real unemployment and growth statistics. When the enormity of the ongoing crash gets too big to hide, they'll then attempt to blame the evil GOP. Who knows, they'll probably succeed, but it won't matter much, not really. The truth will out eventually.

264 the proposals to "fix" entitlement spending are essentially proposals that would transform entitlements into a strongly progressive structure- just like the tax code, by means testing benefits for the "wealthy". once entitlements become (more) progressive, they can be expanded but not contracted- just like it has become politically impossible to raise middle class tax rates- although from a revenue perspective, significantly more revenue can only come from the middle class. reducing entitlement spending should affect as nearly as possible all recipients, so that a real reduction in spending can occur

321 I believe in a controlled let it burn philosophy. In other words, protect key constituencies of the Repubs to the greatest extent possible. So renew the tax cuts for those possible, go over the fiscal cliff to force cuts, refuse to pass any budget just like Harry, use the CR procedure to keep govt spending at past budgetary authorizations, etc. Stagnation is the best we can hope for until the deadlock is broken. We know Obamanomics won't work but a majority of the public doesn't. So we have to ameliorate as much as possible the negative effects.

In other words, budgetary and taxation triage, protect our base and forget being responsible for the others. Protect producers such as agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and small business as much as possible. Keep up spending for key military functions but disengage from peripheral engagement such as Afghanistan. We have to maintain our sinew and bones of our economy and military strength so that when default occurs, we can rebuild in peace and security.

Face it, 2012 elections signal that we will have either a hard default (refusal to pay interest and/or principal on borrowing) or a soft default where we pay our debts with worthless fiat currency (most likely option). One thing that is delaying the bond vigilantes is that Japan and many countries in Europe are further along the curve than we are to making these choices. As inflation rises on basic goods, such as food and energy, expect regime collapses and violent disorder in much of the Third World that cannot feed nor house themselves.

____

Happy to. "Snark" is a combination of "snort" and "lark." Your proper snort is usually elicited by some savage Jevenalian sally, while a lark is horse of a Horatian color. A snark is produced when a snort assails a lark, sort of like Zeus and Hera, only in reverse. This has nothing to do with retrograde ejaculation.

333 This plan "B" might be the best the GOP can hope for. By taking the "middle class" tax cuts off the table, then the GOP will have better ground to dig in and halt at. If the taxes for the middle class goes up, Obama and the MSM will paint the GOP as hating the middle class and will have the rise in taxes to back that up.

Take that off the table, and the GOP will be in a much stronger position to hold on everything else.

Most Jews in Germany didn't leave in 1933, 1934 or 1935. This was because despite what Hitler was saying openly, most Jews thought it was just talk. The Jews that were sounding the alarm were marginalized as worry-warts and crazy people.

How'd that work out for them?

412 Never wanted to be that, however, you are rationalizing inaction, which is congruent with the "let it burn" idea. It's never OK to let the USA burn.
It becomes ok to let the USA burn when over half the population feels that it is the proper place of the government to redistribute wealth in a way that is beneficial to them and when that half of the population also wants the government to take an active role in telling every single person in the country how to live their lives.
At this point we are not even close the founding principles of the country and we aren't even remotely close to returning to those values. Unlike the 50%+ of the country who voted for Obama and are proud of it I'm so deeply ashamed of what the country has become I'm starting to think I need to join the prozac/valium crowd.
With the libtards in charge and the Republicans unable to mount any sort of effective opposition (and unable to learn from mistakes and mount an effective opposition) this slipperly slide only goes down. There is no ladder to climb up on the other side.

Posted by: DiogenesLamp at December 18, 2012 04:25 PM

Yeah thats pretty much it. The left's ideas historically never ever work. What is different here is the american left (little "a") think they are special. Look at that scumbag obama, he thinks because he breathes people need to bow to his intellect. Its the same for all leftists. They breath, therefore they are correct. See the planet will give the finger to the sun and stop warming just because the leftists think the planet will listen to them, because come on, they are leftists, they think the fucking universe don't see them as nothing more than a germ on a ball of dirt circling around an insignificant little yellow star. Noooo they are leftists, they think their existence actually fucking means something. They think socialism is cool because if they run it it won't fold in on itself like a puckering asshole like it has every frigging time its tried. They have been proven wrong by 10,000 years of human history and still have the fucking gaul to look in a mirror and say "I'm special"

It IS a mental disease.

I have found it as hard to explain to people who grew up trusting the promise that they had an "account" the government was keeping for them that it isn't so as it is to explain, well, anything to leftists.

All you can say now is "don't think of them as the government, think of them as the pushy and profligate neighbor who promised to invest that money in a sure thing for you, but spent it on hookers and booze instead."

Because that's basically what they did, promised people they'd invest money for them, blew it on shinies, and now the whole fucking place is on fire and they won't even admit they stole the money.

There is no account, they stole your money, they spent it on hookers and booze and they're laughing at you.

But who wants *that* to be their reality? So they invent another reality they can "live with," where there's a "fix" that will make everything right again.

Going Galt is obviously a dramatic device in a fictional book. In real life, "going Galt" is much more subtle because in real life the ability to grow your income from year to year is much more marginal, so "going Galt" in the real world also has to be on the margins.
The economy, in good times, grows about 3% on average. So, that means that a lawyer who has 100 clients might get 3 new clients in a year, all things being equal. If that lawyer now decides not to solicit or take on those 3 new clients, he's "gone Galt", even if he continues to provide service to his existing client base of 100. Of course Rand wouldn't use such a pedestrian device as the dramatic setting for her book, but let's say that Galt's engine would have had 3,000,000 users, that means that if 1 million people, be they lawyers, contractors, engineers, whatever "go Galt" by not pursuing those 3 extra work opportunities in a year, it's the same impact.
So, like all the other moron Leftists who spew this mocking "go Galt" bullshit, you completely misunderstand the marginal nature of economic growth in a mature economy, as well as the power of large numbers of individual decisions.

Actually, I believed it was a system to take money from people who work, to give it to people who *used* to work. In the time I lived, that was pretty much the rule. People worked. Because there were jobs, and they could make money, and stuff.

If our 'betters' in the Republican party think that the first people to get thrown out the window are those that worked for fifty years, as opposed to looking at whether 99 fucking weeks of unemployment benefits is 'sustainable', or a Food Stamp program that is exploding exponentially at a level never before experienced, then I have one word for them... pussies.

Our TVs get MSNBC too. What you are saying over there isn't sooper sekret. And you can hardly get through a day without someone suggesting that conservative rights to speak, not be locked up, and yes in cases, even be alive, need to end.

501 It is obvious our government is not spending enough. If it were school shootings would never happen as every home would be bugged and have a set of assigned listeners. Guns would be confiscated. Elections would be won by a 100% margin 100% of the time so there would be none of this rude gridlock.

I mean if the FED can print 80 billion dollars to buy our debt every month can't they just print 800 billion or 1.6 trillion or so a month? Heck give every non millionaire of color 5 million dollars and every white union worker a million dollars to bolster the economy. Then we could like, you know, tax them more to pay off the debt.

The Internet is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

The internet is a liability. Dead drops and cutouts are a necessity.

503 I really can't help but marvel at how Harry Reid functions like a
fucking machine. It's almost as if his survival is driven by bile, the
availability of black market organs, and pederasty (allegedly).

504 I'm in the "Let it Burn" camp, but you have to be deft on how you're positioned when the burning starts.

Let's say Boehner is secretly in the Let It Burn camp. He can't come out and say that, he has to look like he's being reasonable. Saying you're willing to keep tax rates the same for everyone under a million dollars is a great place to be strategically, and technically, Republicans aren't raising taxes, they're simply extending the current rates.

At the end of the day, if conservatives could get all the Bush tax cuts up to a million dollar salary per year, that's a hell of a victory. 8 years of Obama and a Democrat Senate and 99.9% of the US pays the same tax rate (actually less) than they did under Bush?

And I would wager the overwhelming majority of those tax increases hit Limousine Liberals in industries like Hollywood, professional sports, trial lawyers, etc.

507 It wasn't the "RINO Establishment" who redistricted West out of his
seat. It was the bipartisan districting committee in Florida.

Shit I'm sorry I went away and missed responding to this before it became a dead thread; but this is a great example of how "bipartisanship" works.

Donks: We're scared shitless of Allen West and would love get rid of him at all costs.

Repuke Shitstains: Oh thank God; he scares us so fucking much that we might have to actually stand for something other than feathering our own nests.
