One Fantastic Argument Against More Gun Laws. (and using it as a template on other issues.) [krakatoa]

I was introduced to this link by one of the cobloggers I believe. Or it may have been in the headlines or part of an actual post.

Searching the blog's archives really isn't my strong suit though, and I simply wouldn't be doing it right if this weren't a duplicate post.

Written in 2007 by Marko Kloss, aka "The Munchkin Wrangler", (said munchkins apparently being "Iron Man and Cardboard Lass"), this essay distills in a few short paragraphs a very powerful argument against gun-control laws.

An excerpt:

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that’s it...

... People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that’s the exact opposite of a civilized society.

Please read the whole thing. I don't know how long it will remain online, as he moved to new blog-digs, and I wasn't able to find the post at the new site.

The concept of personal firearm ownership as a force equalizer for the weak or outnumbered is a powerful one; force equalization not simply against a tyrannical government that might one day exist*, but against those tyrants that will always exist at all levels of any society, who would dominate you with the leverage of superior force.

DrewM has been saying that we should be framing more Conservative arguments in ways that can appeal to those we wish to persuade on an emotional level.

That isn't to say we should abandon reason and logic and try to outbid the left, but that we should strive to find an emotional hook to put a human face on the more abstract arguments for our principles.

The Gun-Control argument is one that is absolutely loaded with emotional appeal on the gun-grabbers side, but very little hard data to support them.

We have a great many powerful anecdotes to counter the emotional appeal of the gun-grabbers though, and a great deal of hard data to support those appeals.

This is an argument we have won again and again over the past several decades.

I think DrewM would probably point to this issue as a template for use in our appeals on other Conservative issues as well.

Arguing the dry and detached philosophies of Conservatism that promise payoffs over generations rather than next week's dole check is a losing proposition in today's society.

We must be able to make those philosophies appeal on the emotional level if there is any hope for us to right this ship.

* and of course, some would argue that the government has already crossed the rubicon into tyranny. I don't think we are there quite yet, but it is certainly no longer a blurry dot on the horizon.

6 That argument goes back to the original marketing for hand guns. They were marketted to women as a "great equalizer".

And it is true, but not just for women. A 7 foot 350 pound lineman will still go down when you pump 2 or 3 .45 acps into his chest.

7 Well, reason, force or ... lizard-brain emotional manipulation.

It'd be great if reason or force were the only two ways to get somebody to do something.

Emotional manipulation is actually the most common way to get somebody to do something. A handy way to bypass those pesky reasoning skills some people have.

10 It's sad that this basic idea has to be taught and re-taught, again and again. It illustrates one serious advantage the Left has - they can simply exploit existing human stupidity/emotionality. We are forced to work toover-come it, and then build upon the foundation thus established. It's a heckuva burden, especially since the agents of the state who work for the education establishment do everything they can to brainwash the young people into believing preposterous lies.
DOOM. Bring on SMOD - it can't come soon enough.

If I were 82 years old I'd go for the 9 mil as well. More ammo capacity to make upfor my shakey old hands. Put some hollow point rounds in the mag and they'll do just fine. Frangible ammo - prolly even better...
Though, really I'd just use a shotgun loaded with 00 shot. Vs an intruder or small number of intruders, that would work well. Vs a mob, then you need a semi-auto rifle of good quality. The gas-piston versions of the AR would be preferable, in my opinion, also using hollow points. For a younger man, the .308 version would be a nice choice.
I once heard it said, and agree, that a hand gun is only useful for fighting your way back to the rifle you shouldn't have dropped in the first place.

32 Great post, and the linked post is a very good read.

Arguing the dry and detached philosophies of Conservatism that promise payoffs over generations rather than next week's dole check is a losing proposition in today's society.

See, here's my thing. We keep saying that conservatism's message is unappealing. I don't get that. I don't see it like that. And yes, I'm a conservative, so I know that I'm looking at it with a jaundiced eye. But to me conservatism is less about all the money in your bank account or the size of the car or house you can buy, which is what I'd consider the "payoffs" you noted.

To me, conservatism is being able to build a shed in your own backyard without having to get half a dozen permits and zoning clearances before you even buy the wood.

Conservatism is being able to buy school supplies for your daughter without having to wonder if she'll get to keep them, or if they'll be redistributed to her classmates.

Conservatism is being allowed to hold Biblestudy in your own home without being taxed as a religious organization.

Conservatism is being able to sell lemonade from a lemonade stand without being called on the carpet by the FDA for food preparation without a license.

We're constantly seeing news stories about these very things that get the nation at large up in arms. So why is conservatism such a hard sell? To me at least, all of these things can be cured through the application of conservative principles, and would represent an immediate, tangible benefit.

I'm not sure why that's so hard for people to get behind.

Because our public salespeople suck at their jobs. Also, no matter what we do, the Leftists have the entire media complex to re-characterize us every time we make progress. The case has to be made on the individual level, one person to another. We have no effective mass media outlets.

Plus, the educational establishment brainwashes people to instinctively reject anything that doesn't fit their mush-headed, emotional take on all things. It's hard to beat through that wall of protective stupidity.

Abortion can be attacked similarly: Abortions are used by minorities the most; Democrats support unlimited access to abortion. Ergo, Democrats support reducing the minority population through support of policies that result in fewer minority children being born.

Ideas of "equality" go back much further than any actual instance of equality, which really began with the Ancient Greeks in Athens. What happened? The reduction in the disparity of force available to the average soldier versus the aristocratic solider. Once a common infantryman became nearly as lethal as an aristocrat on a chariot or a horse, especially when deployed in the hoplite formation, it became impossible to deny that common soldier some political representation. After the defeat of Athens, partially because of the same type of demagogue that Obama is, "equality" as an idea then went underground again until the invention of gunpowder again reduced the available killing power of the aristocrat vs. the common foot soldier.

Except . . .
Its wrong.
"When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force."
Well, no. As even he goes on to explain a gun removes disparities between people but it does not negate the threat. As long as someone is still willing to take the chance of increased injury in a gun fight they are still perfectly capable of threatening or employing force.
Further, even his allegation of what disparities are removed is simply wrong:

"The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender."

No it doesn't. Physical strength and size are still limiters on just what weapon can be used effectively. A physically frail person cannot use a gun of the same size as a physically robust person, allowing the physically robust to regain the advantage by the simple expedient of body armor. Even without that it still allows for a disparity in the visual effect of facing a weapon significantly larger than the one you own. It also means that a larger person can carry his gun at the ready on a constant basis. As for eliminating a disparity in numbers, that is simply absurd. A team can have an unarmed person approach you, putting you at your ease, while his armed partner prepares to ambush you. Or, an armed attacker can force a weaker willed armed attacker to confront you from the front as a target for your retaliation while he ambushes you from a safer direction. As for a gang attack, barring going rock and roll with a full automatic, it takes time to switch from one target to the next. A determined gang can sacrifice injuries to a .22 in exchange for victory with a sufficiently valuable prize.
Of course much worse than any of those are the disparities he chooses not to mention - the disparities in fire discipline, aim, and simply psychological nerve. Particularly the last, we understand that the person looking to use force, particularly force that is highly likely to be lethal, has already crossed the threshhold to use such force. Someone else . . . perhaps not. The merest delay in willingness to use lethal force creates a massive disparity, no matter how equally armed the two parties might otherwise have been. This plays directly into his next fallacy:
"The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level."
Not in the least. Remember, that attacker already knows the encounter is going to be lethal, and has already made the leap to using lethal force to achieve his goal. With that, rather than a mugger confronting someone and demanding their money or their life, he would simply ambush them and take their life, then loot the corpse at their leisure. Or take the "drive-by shooting" as an example. Do they start with one side walking up to the other side and mentioning a point of contention, slowly escalating into a firefight? Or do they start with one side having their guns out, moving at speed, and laying down indiscriminate fire while the other side is simply walking along?
Of course all of this comes down to the underlying pretense picked up from Heinlein that "An armed society is a polite society."
Utter nonsense.
An armed society is an armed society;
An unarmed society is an unarmed society;
A polite society is a polite society;
A rude society is a rude society;
Mix and match to find your end result.
Why?
People have disagreements. No matter how polite they might otherwise be, they will not always agree on everything.
Those disagreements will lead to confrontations, reasoned or otherwise.
If the only reason those confrontations do not escalate beyond a certain point is fear of lethal force, then that is not being polite, that is being afraid. You have a society not of polite people, but of cowards.
More critically, those willing to use their armed status to assert their preferences over others are not merely defending themselves and making other people be polite, they are being bullies. They are using their armed status combined with their willingness to escalate a disagreement to force others to back down and give them their way. So your society of cowards is equally interspersed with bullies, who are their own kind of coward, and any veneer of civility is merely a pretense to conceal the universal cowardice.
So again, no.
A collection of logical fallacies and internal contradictions are simply not convincing.
If you want a polite society you must build a polite society independent of the status of arms.
If you just build an armed society all you may be doing is putting guns in the hands of bullies and thugs and hoping the universal fear is enough to keep the rate of gunfire down while ignoring the other violence simply because it is lesser.

You may be exaggerating but I think you are right, at least from my observation.
My SIL is a case in point. A lifelong yellow-dog Democrat, classic bleeding-heart liberal, and gun- control freak, she changed her mind about the 2nd amendment once she herself hit the range. She earned her CC permit just last summer.

Incidentally, if you can change a woman's mind about guns, she will start to question all of the other lefty dogma. My SIL voted GOP this year for the first time in her life.

Getting a woman to do it is the hard thing.

FORTUNE -- Do you know who owns more than a 6% stake in the maker of .223 Bushmaster rifles, like the one used last Friday to murder 20 first graders and seven adults in Newtown, Connecticut? California public schoolteachers.
The company in question is Freedom Group, a privately-held firearms conglomerate formed by private equity and hedge fund group Cerberus Capital Management. Cerberus created the platform in April 2006 via the acquisition of Bushmaster, after which it added another 10 makers of firearms, ammunition and accessories (including Remington, Marlin Arms and Barnes Bullets).
The California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) committed to invest a whopping $500 million into a $7.5 billion Cerberus fund that has helped bankroll Freedom Group. That means that it effectively could own a 6.67% stake in the gun maker, which filed to go public in late 2009 before pulling the offering in early 2011. In fact, the figure could be even higher since CalSTRS also committed $100 million to a $1 billion predecessor fund, which likely made the original investment.

This is why there are those who quite sincerely and earnestly believe that the best way to deal with stalkers, idiotic exes, insane girlfriends, whatever, is via a piece of paper. What I find hilarious about that is that the piece of paper is effectively only because the police are authorized to deal with a violation of the words on that paper with force.

190 COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC!

But this is what is coming to America via Obamacare

http://tinyurl.com/bnb8a4w

Marilyn Glassford, who owns Lakeshore Tours & Travel in Bowmanville, Ontario, points out another reason: the opportunity to save money.

“Everybody I know talks about doing their shopping in the U.S., and it makes sense. You can‘t afford to shop here,” she said.

Canadians pay a 13 percent sales tax in addition to paying about 13 percent more on average for comparable products than do Americans, a Bank of Montreal report this year found.

For example, magazines cost $6.49 in Canadian dollars, compared with $5.49 in the United States, the report found. Blu-ray movies in Canada cost $21.69, compared with $19.98 here, and running shoes cost $145.99 in Canada, compared with $105.99 here.

In June, the Canadian government raised duty-free exemption limits from $50 to $200 per person for U.S. stays of 24 hours and from $400 to $800 for stays of 48 hours. It did so in order to modernize purchase rules and to ease congestion at border crossings into Canada, government officials said, though business leaders opposed the idea.

213 There is a book I read once. Yay, me. I think the title is "Before the Gun", but I can't find the book or even a reference to it.

The book is about the introduction of firearms to Japan, and the author (a Westerner; I thought it was Turnbull, but apparently not) claims to be trained in various Japanese martial arts, and is a bit anti-gun.

Actually, maybe more than a bit. I think the author's wife is from a samurai family ...

Condensing the book to a few essential facts (all contained in the book), we find:

1. The population percentage of samurai and other nobles (i.e., The Ruling Class) in Japanese society was never counted (it was apparently considered undignified) ... until the Meiji Restoration, where it was discovered that about 10% of the population of Japan claimed to be samurai (or higher). The implication is that this percentage had been relatively constant since perhaps the 1300's. Ok, I believe this.

2. The population percentage of warriors/warrior classes in (Dark Age - Medieval - Renaissance) Europe was between 1 and 2%. Ok, I believe this too.

3. The superiority of musqueteers over swordsmen, pikemen, halbardeers, and other pre-firearms weapon users is some amount, (it varies, and is sometimes negative), ...

... but ...

The widely-varying skill among, say, swordsmen, is very much greater than that of musqueteers, or pistoleros, or most other firearms users.

The author discusses these things, but ... his way.

His way, to greatly simplify, is that noble and brave ... and skilled ... warriors resisted firearms for a few hundred years, but were eventually displaced, replaced, .....

A better analysis reveals that 10% of Japanese society, when introduced to practical firearms in the mid-16th Century, embraced them for the current invasion of Korea, but, once the Korean adventure had failed, realized the existential threat that firearms posed to the domestic status quo.

Firearms were then confiscated and tightly regulated, and the samurai and nobles got back to life as it had been ... comfortable, exciting, the stuff legends are made of, ... for them, much less pleasant for everyone else.

Why did Europe evolve differently? If the author's figures are correct (I believe them), from a population of 1,000,000, Feudal Japan could field 100,000 trained warriors (divided up among 'n' different daimyos), whereas Europe could only field 10,000 (divided up 'm' ways).

Japan had plenty of warriors, no need for more. But Europe did not, and had to rely on peasant rabble ... until the English showed what the longbow could do, and the Swiss made the phalanx a fearsome weapon again.

The nobles then, over time, introduced musquets: short training time, so little skill required, even thousands of bumpkins could be satisfactorily trained.

This, then is the point: even thousands of bumpkins could be satisfactorily trained.

The result: In Europe, over time, a severe thinning of the nobles, a giant rise personal freedom, liberty, wealth, security ... and a giant reduction in violence and crime.

Meanwhile, in Japan, the man with the sword still did as he chose, and only other men with swords (men from his class) could do something about it.

Is there a need to re-learn these lessons?

Yeah, and I saw one asshole saying that the use of an individual gun against the government would be useless because the government would just send a tank over to your house and force you into compliance, so these fuckers would apparently condone a full-scale deployment of military force against someone exercising a Constitutional right, but asking a potential illegal immigrant for ID is some kind of human rights violation that gives them the vapors.

221 I've heard Munchkin Wrangler's argument before, it's a good one. Mine is this:

One fundamental right not in the Bill of Rights is the right to exist. Not as a society but as an individual. The right of self-defense extends from the right of individual existence -- the right to exist means nothing if you are denied the right to defend it when it is threatened. And the right to self-defense required the right to the tools for an effective defense. Since impervious personal force-fields haven't been invented yet, right now that means guns.

People who want to ban guns deny all those rights, down to individual existence. Since the government denies any liability for its failure to protect your life, the only one responsible for that protection is you. When that same government denies you the right to protect your life, the right to the tools needed to protect it, it is in essence saying that your life is forfeit when its continued existence conflicts with the interests of the State. We know where that road leads.

Well that's your problem. Honestly you're not even trying.

How about simply ignoring each other?

You mean reasoning that they're not worth the effort andgiving up?

How about cultural norms?

You tell me how you deal with someone via "cultural norms". Like, he starts smacking you in the face and you say "Hey! In our society, that is not normal!"

How about compromise?

Again, that would be a form of reasoning.

How about passive-aggressive behavior?

A combination approach of reason and force. If you consider psychological manipulation force, otherwise just reason.

How about love?

How about it? That goes with cultural norms. Someone points a gun at you and says 'give me your shoes' and you say 'I lufs u man'? Flash him some leg?

Man no shit dude. I had a told a story here once before, and I guess it needs retelling. I was at party one night some years ago, it was a lot of musicians. Like I said a few times, for some reason I never encountered many libs in metal, and as a poster here said in words I wish I could remember, that its probably because metal by nature is dripping with testosterone. Anyway, there was the typical emo self styled guru ,who thought he was going to impress the chicks with his wisdom, and was pontificating on subject after subject of liberal douchebaggery.

Then....the subject moved to guns. At that point I started listening. He was spewing all the left bullshit talking points. He ended with guns should be banned, guns are stupid, why do we need them. he made the mistake of looking at me to reinforce his bullshit, and said "am I right?'

Bad frigging move on his part. There was a joint going around and it came to me just as he asked. I took a big dog hit, calmly blew it in his face, and said I think when the balloon goes up my troops will be in your castle breaking your shit, drinking your booze, and ass fucking your women while making you watch, and there won't be a god damn thing you can do about it, and I'll bet every guitar I own that in that moment you'll fucking WISH you had a gun. Then I pointed to the chicks standing next to him and finished with, "and they will too".

After the laughter in the room subsided, the little emo homo got huffy and walked out. The best part....the chicks stayed. lol

264 My issue is that there are people who treat guns in this society like any other collectible... stamps, swords... Adam Lanza had access to guns that were not his, but his mom's. Concealed carry weapon, if that's your only weapon, and you carry it with you, that's one thing. But a cache of weapons is harder to account for. You can kill with one finger with a gun. Depending on who's using it, a gun can be difficult to wield one handed. Two handguns are questionable, but three? Especially another one that needs two hands to operate (assault rifle)? Why have three?

If you don't want the responsibility of having a burglar, a mugger, a family member, or an unstable friend getting a hold of your other guns, then keep one and keep it close. Protect your families, sure. Train every member of the family to keep their own gun. Whatever. But for one person to be in possession of 3 or 4 is a bit much, especially when there is a risk of someone else getting to them.

Me too.

Great story for ya Bannion. So I played baseball in college. Had a pretty successful senior year. Big write up in the local paper. So the next time I pitch, my wife (then fiance) was in the stands watching, of course. Her and her friends notice that there are two freshman girls sitting in the row right in front of them and they're discussing me. The article. And which one of them is gonna land me after the game. And apparently they went into graphic detail. So the wife is greatly amused by this. She's just listening. Now these two girls are arguing about their various physical attributes. "Well, I've got a way better ass than you." "Yeah, but I got the better tits and guys always go for the boobs." Finally, wife's friend can't stand it anymore and taps them on the shoulder. "Did y'all actually read the article?" "No. Why?" "Because if you had, you would have noticed that it said he was engaged. To her." And points at my wife. Wife smiles, wiggles 2 carat engagement ring. "Hi. And btw, he's an ass man."

282 185 Only two ways of dealing with one another ... reason and force? Uh, not buying it. We have lots of ways of dealing with one another. How about simply ignoring each other? How about cultural norms? How about compromise? How about passive-aggressive behavior? How about love? Yeah, yeah, I guess this makes me a liberal but please, this piece gross oversimplifies human options. Posted by: MaxMBJ at December 18, 2012 01:18 PM (wfT/H)

This makes very little sense, MaxMBJ. The examples you give are not ways of dealing with one another. They are things that must be dealt with.

Ignoring each other is a REASONED response to differing points of view. You've mutually decided to pursue the matter no further. Or perhaps one side has decided to ignore the other. The other can accept this, or can FORCE the opponent to listen.

Cultural norms. You can choose to abide by the cultural norms of those around you, REASONing that it will lead to the most harmonious result. Or you can FORCE your own cultural norms onto your neighbors, in hopes that they will adopt your ways or at the very least ignore you and let you get on with life, REASONing that trying to stop you would be more trouble than it's worth. Of course, they could also choose to FORCE you to abide by their dominant cultural norms.

Compromise. Are you serious? Compromise is the very essence of reason. That's kind of the point.

Passive-Aggressive behavior. Depending on the severity, I would qualify passive-aggression as force. You're still forcing your will on another individual or group of individuals; you're just doing it in a roundabout fashion instead of via a direct confrontation. So while you're using passive force, the victims of your passive-aggression must use reason to decide if they put up with your bullshit or confront you head-on and tell you to knock it the hell off.

Love. Love is not a method to win an argument. Love is an endgame. "If I woo so-and-so, maybe she'll fall in love with me." Or, "At midnight, I'm going to grab so-and-so and give him a huge New Year's kiss. Maybe he'll notice me then!"

284 Even having a conversation about this flies in the face of the evidence that such situations are growing rarer, not more common. Violent crime continues to decline where there are "loose" gun control laws. It continues to increase where there are 'strict" gun control laws.

That's what I don't get. It's another GOP Miracle - the field of battle is ceded to the Progressives by even having the conversation, much less losing the conversation wars in front of a sycophantic and complicit media.

Sigh...the media is a national blue screen of death.

310 How can Crows and Parrots be so smart with them lil bitty brains?
Posted by: eleven at December 18, 2012 01:47 PM (KXm42)

Well, with crows at least (corvids in general) their brain mass in proportion to body size is only a little less than that ratio in humans. So they've got sizeable brains, all things considered.

Did you know crows hide little stocks of food in lots of different places? They do. But what makes them so smart is that sometimes they'll PRETEND to hide food, because they know that other animals -- esp. other crows -- can see that they're hiding something. So they employ a little misdirection to confuse would-be thieves. "I'll make Heckle think I'm hiding this bit of hamburger bun here, but in reality I'm going to hide it way over THERE when he's not looking."

And I just love their feet. Bird feet are so cute.

311 MWR,

Yeah, you could argue most of my alternatives are just reason or force (except love) but you starting to stretch definitions to do it.

Personally, I'm always suspicious of "it all boils down to" arguments. Sometimes it does, some things are black and white, you're either pregnant or you're not ... but I doubt highly that reason and force are the only two options in dealing with human conflict. Aristotle said persuasion comes from three directions -- ethos, pathos, and logos. Logos is reason but pathos isn't. It's emotion. And ethos is character. You can sometimes deal with conflict just because you're the man of character. I've seen that happen many times.

And advertisers use emotion far more than reason to convince you to buy their product.

But I really am getting pedantic now.

They do! We've got a crow family that's lived on our street for several years. There's always at least three of them; I call them Heckle, Jeckle and Moe. I can't tell them apart (cuz crows), but you can usually tell when its Heckle and Jeckle because they'll be foraging near each other. Moe tends to be off on his (or her) own. Anyway, at least once a year -- assumedly after the hatchlings have left the nest -- there can be as many as six or seven crows hopping around on the lawns up and down the street: Heckle, Jeckle and Moe, plus Larry, Curly, Shemp, etc. It's fricking adorable. The juvenile crows have these big, unkempt bodies and look confused when they have to use their wings and legs at the same time.

So having 4 stolen is OK, but not 5?

Four guns is nothing for an avid shooter and/or hunter. A .22 for squirrel and other small game, a 7mm Mag rifle for open country deer, a .30-30 brush gun, a long barrel 12 gauge for duck and geese, a shorter barreled 12 gauge for turkey, a .338 Mag for elk or moose- that's 6 right there.

Even for a non-hunter, one might own a .45 and 12 gauge pump for home defense, a .40 and .380 for concealed carry (depending on attire), a .22 pistol for target practice, and a semi-auto rifle for longer range.

That's a minimum of 8 total.

347 I'm not so sure. Boner and the rest aren't showing much backbone since
the election, and the press is gonna drown them in negative publicity if
they take a stand on this.

Boehner may not be a hardcore take-no-prisoners type, but he's not suicidal. The NRA (and more importantly, the voters they represent) would crucify him and anyone else who played along with a new gun ban.

Even in the aftermath of this terrible slaughter, the public is far from united against major new gun control laws.

370 Haven't read the thread, but I always frame the gun control issue in feminist terms, based on my own experience with protecting myself from a molester twice my size.

It irks some of the Principled Tru-cons, but I don't care, as long as it gets the point across to the lefties I'm trying to persuade. Some idiot tru-con attacked me in a comment thread for mentioning that women vote and donate to the NRA and political candidates. Apparently we violate our Principles when we mention gender.

371 I don't think reason comes into play unless one wants to be reasonable as in the case of the British and Gandhi.

No, man is selfish and self serving at his base and only force or the threat of force changes the mob into a civilization.

God created man, but Colt made men equal.

Posted by: ALL_IS_LOST at December 18, 2012 05:10 PM (T/L2Z)

372 When Michael Moore and tripe such as he goes on about how America robbed, rapped, and murdered its way to glory I simply ask what civilization didn't?

Maybe the Swiss...nope
The Germans....are you kidding me
The Romans or the British???
The Native American tribes...nope that is not it.
China...well only on their own continent.

Now when America had the world literally in a choke hold when Japan and Germany was defeated and most other countries devastated financially, politically, materialistically, and while America had the only one bomb - one city weapon in the world what did this evil nation do??

It rebuilt the world. That's all. Friend and foe alike. Yes even Russia received gifts from the US and China support from our soldiers and coffers.

So F you Michael Moore and your like.

373 161As gun ownership has increased, crime has decreased.

So your masturbatory theory is discredited by actual fact.Posted by: Bevel Lemelisk at December 18, 2012 01:07 PM (PVNda)
I said nothing about crime, I said violence.
Perhaps if you spent less time masturbating with your guns you could spend more time on reading comprehension.

Indeed this, and the other failed "rebuttals", rather proves my point: your level of discourse has not become more civil because you are armed, but rather you feel more entitled to be obnoxious in your replies because you are armed and therefore believe your view cannot be challenged.Of course in all of that you really failed to notice that nowhere did I say anything about banning or restricting gun ownership, merely that the assertion that owning guns is in and of itself an "equalizer" that enhances "civility" is simply wrong.
There are plenty of rational and logical reasons to be armed.
None of them justify irrational reasons, or make illogical reasons logical.

Posted by: Sam at December 18, 2012 08:29 PM (wZIgv)

374 175A. We already have an armed society.
2. Thugs and bullies already have guns.
Posted by: huerfano at December 18, 2012 01:12 PM (bAGA/)A. Well actually, we don't. If we did then someone would have been defending that school with a gun, wouldn't they?2. Yes they do. Hence the problem with A.Of course both leave unanswered the other possibilities:B. Will giving everyone guns make them responsible or just thugs and bullies now that they feel they are "equal"?1. Will the thugs and bullies actually become civilized, or simply more treacherous?176Sam reminds me of the bearded douche in Die Hard.

Posted by: krakatoa at December 18, 2012 01:20 PM (l7H1O)No, you are saying that.
I am saying:

Thug w/gun andthug mindsetvs vic w/smaller gun and civilized mindset=/= Equal chance of victory particularly when the thug is setting the rules of engagementYou howeverare saying that:Thug w/gun vs vic w/smaller gun = No more thugs or crime, and verbal resolution to all conflict

Take a page from Alinsky, everytime someone argues for gun control/banning, immediately respond by asking, "Why do you hate women?"
Only a gun gives a woman any chance against bigger, stronger men.

Posted by: Michael Kerr at December 18, 2012 08:50 PM (KoHzX)

376 Here's the really sad thing. The people pitching the biggest fit about this, how they want the children to be safe, they want the childhood I had in the 1950s. They want kids to be able to play in the streets at night, run through the woods, walk to school, without being afraid. The people that want this the most are the same people that stripped away all the things that gave us that civilization in the 50s. They pushed religion out of the public life, endorsed abortion and easy divorce, supported women's rights over men and encouraged easy sex and no responsibility to your children. And this is what they get. They get a culture with lots of sick depraved people that would like nothing more than to degrade the innocence of their children. What could be more shocking and get a bigger rise than degrading children? Is it any wonder that the sick jaded people we now have are doing this?

My dear, recently liberal boyfriend was looking into getting a concealed weapons permit for both of us today. We don't even have any decent guns yet, just my old shotgun and a .22 pistol with a bent firing pin. I was really surprised.

Posted by: notsothoreau at December 18, 2012 08:54 PM (5HBd1)

377 Physical strength and size are still limiters on just what weapon can be
used effectively. A physically frail person cannot use a gun of the
same size as a physically robust person...
