The Dissident Frogman Explains Guns to the Media

Funny and educational - it's a classic from way back in 2007. Be sure and stay for the bloopers at the end.

Ricochet Needs Your Help

I'm a subscriber to Ricochet mainly for their various podcasts (Lileks, Goldberg, and Delingpole among others) but their forums are quite popular as well. But alas they need a need a few more subscribers to keep it going.

I've followed Ricochet since it's debut.  From the beginning, it's been an interesting site with great content.  It's also got a beautiful layout, which counts for a lot when you do what I do, which is spend way too much time reading blog posts.

Ricochet's business model is an interesting one:  rather than charging people to view content, it charges people for the right to participate in the conversation.  It turns out that this business model requires that 2% of Ricochet's members subscribe to Ricochet.  The problem, though, is that only 1% are currently subscribing, and this is true despite an audience that is large and increasing.

A full membership is only $30 a year and also gets you a subscription to National Review Digital. Conservatives always talk about building up an alternative right-wing media but here's a chance to actually do more than just talk about it in blog comments.

What Are the Common Factors of Mass Shooters?

Untreated mental illness and gun-free zones are just two of many.

"The fact is, the facts are, as in Aurora, as in Arizona, as in Virginia Tech, as in virtually every case the Secret Service studied of these kinds of events. Every one of these episodes is proceeded by an undiagnosed, untreated, mental illness. Over the last 24 hours increasing information has come in from family members, from friends, from students, that Adam Lanza, as you have mentioned, was disturbed, was removed, was isolated."

Also the worst school killing in US history happened in 1927 and didn't involve guns at all.

A Five-Point Action Plan for President Obama to Reduce Violence by the Mentally Ill

After a mass shooting people always call for something to be done about the seriously mentally ill but usually never get specific. Well DJ Jaffe at NRO has gotten down and dirty come up with five specific proposals for dealing the seriously disturbed. I'm no expert in this field but these seem like reasonable starting points.

Even if the severely mentally ill aren't shooting people, they can still seriously degrade the quality of life for entire neighborhoods e.g. the Wild Man of 96th Street.

1. Start demonstration projects of Assisted Outpatient Treatment (e.g. Kendra's Law in New York, Laura's Law in California) throughout the country.

AOT allows courts to order individuals with mental illness to stay in treatment as a condition of living in the community. It is only applicable to the most seriously ill who have a history of violence, incarceration, or needless hospitalizations. AOT is proven to keep patients, the public, and police safer. The Department of Justice has certified AOT as an effective crime-prevention program.  But mental-health departments are reluctant to implement AOT because it forces them to focus on the most seriously ill. Demonstration projects would help mental-health departments see the advantage of the program. (For why some people with serious mental illness refuse treatment, see this. See also how Assisted Outpatient Treatment laws (Kendra's Law in NY and Laura's Law in CA) keep patients, the pubic and police safer.

Planes That Just Won't Die

Believe it or not there are quite a few WWII vintage airplanes still carrying passengers and cargo around the world. They're robust, cheap and just keep working.

Many DC-3/C-47 aircraft continue to fly. Several hundred are still operating worldwide, mostly owned by small domestic carriers in the U.S. and by some Third World air transport companies. A state of the art aircraft in the mid-1930s (during which only 500 were built), over 16,000 DC 3's were produced for use during World War II as C-47s. The DC-3 was, in fact, one of the most widely manufactured aircraft of the war.

And this makes them worth overhauling even for the US:

The latest revival for this iconic plane is a refurb that creates a 13 ton aircraft with a rebuilt and lengthened fuselage, upgraded wings, new engines, and modern electronics. Called the BT-67, it is in use by eight civilian (including the U.S. Forestry Service) organizations and nine air forces (including the U.S. Air Force and the Chinese Air Force). The BT-67 is about a meter (three feet) longer than the original DC-3 and 1.5 tons heavier. Cruising speed is 380 kilometers an hour, compared to 240 for the DC-3. Range is more than twice the 1,600 kilometers of the DC-3. Typical load for the BT-67 (4 tons) is also about twice what the DC-3 would normally haul.

A retailer is promoting boxes of 24kt gold pills that promise to 'turn your innermost parts into chambers of wealth'.

The sparkling capsules, measuring 2cm long, can be found on the Citizen:Citizen website priced at $425.

After digesting the three gold-leaf tablets, shefinds.com claims consumers will find flakes of pure precious metal decorating their excrement.

I thought things were going fine, we traded emails, talked about what it's like living in NYC, and she's a teacher who has to deal with the gimme mentality of her students in an urban school, and we agreed on having coffee and visiting a few spots in the city for fun. I told her I'd call her beforehand, asked when would be a good time to call, then called at that time.

30 seconds into the call she hung up on me. Literally. I dunno bout you but 30 seconds isn't nearly enough time to piss somebody off (usually it takes me a minute at least), and she said she'd call back but never did. Never responded to my emails either, and the day we were supposed to meet up came and went without nary a word.

Disappointing. I think if I ever do date again it will never be through a dating site. Something about online dating that seems to seriously magnify people's flakiness.

40 DC-3

There is a company in NC called Piedmont Airlines, like the old airlines that was bought by Allegheny and is now US Air.

They fly DC-3 and they are cool as hell. They are not pressurized and so you have to fly under 10,000 ft. They are slow, 100-130 MPH. They can land anywhere and as you cruise along you get to see everything below.

I went on a Duck hunting trip to Lake Mattamuskeet in one and we circled the lake before we landed. When we landed a Highway Patrol guy was there, he thought we were running drugs. Long story, but he had never been in a plane, so we took him up and buzzed his home. We did not worry about tickets after that.

60 we have a process in Florida called the Baker Act:

The Baker Act allows for involuntary examination (what some call emergency or involuntary commitment). It can be initiated by judges, law enforcement officials, physicians, or mental health professionals. There must be evidence that the person:
has a mental illness (as defined in the Baker Act).
is a harm to self, harm to others, or self neglectful (as defined in the Baker Act).
Examinations may last up to 72 hours after a person is deemed medically stable and occur in over 100 Florida Department of Children and Families-designated receiving facilities statewide.
There are many possible outcomes following examination of the patient. This includes the release of the individual to the community (or other community placement), a petition for involuntary inpatient placement (what some call civil commitment), involuntary outpatient placement (what some call outpatient commitment or assisted treatment orders), or voluntary treatment (if the person is competent to consent to voluntary treatment and consents to voluntary treatment). The involuntary outpatient placement language in the Baker Act took effect in 2005.

her beforehand, asked when would be a good time to call, then called at
that time.

30 seconds into the call she hung up on me.
Literally. I dunno bout you but 30 seconds isn't nearly enough time to
piss somebody off (usually it takes me a minute at least), and she said
she'd call back but never did. Never responded to my emails either, and
the day we were supposed to meet up came and went without nary a word.

Disappointing.
I think if I ever do date again it will never be through a dating site.
Something about online dating that seems to seriously magnify people's
flakiness.

71 CHMJ, they're in Seattle. Both "liberal", though, so there's that. I put
liberal in quotes, because they both have conservative values, but they
have been indoctrinated, during their "higher learning" that
conservatives are mouth-breathing, science-eschewing 'tards.

I've been to Seattle, that city has a completely different vibe from NYC, and despite the libtardness, people are really a lot friendlier and more approachable. I was only there a couple of days and caught the attention of a girl at Pike Place, but I was in too much of a damned hurry to see everything.

I always find people singing praises about eHarmony but I am absolutely convinced these successes are regional in nature. If the dating pool in your area just happens to blow chunks, there's little eHarmony can do about it, unless you meet someone willing to do the long distance thingie.

DC-3

There is a company in NC called Piedmont Airlines, like the old airlines that was bought by Allegheny and is now US Air.

They
fly DC-3 and they are cool as hell. They are not pressurized and so you
have to fly under 10,000 ft. They are slow, 100-130 MPH. They can land
anywhere and as you cruise along you get to see everything below.

I
went on a Duck hunting trip to Lake Mattamuskeet in one and we circled
the lake before we landed. When we landed a Highway Patrol guy was
there, he thought we were running drugs. Long story, but he had never
been in a plane, so we took him up and buzzed his home. We did not worry
about tickets after that.

Clothes from Nordstrom if there's one nearby. They have a no questions asked return policy, so it's like giving her cash if she hates whatever you got her. (REI has a similar policy if she's crunchy or athletically inclined)

Or, and this will take a bit more effort, something more personal. Maybe a DVD of a movie you saw together that you both liked, along with a bottle of wine and some popcorn. The actual details don't matter as much, just two or three small things that fit a theme and will remind her of you.

Long story short, the military was looking into feasibility of predicting violent behavior in the wake of the Ft. Hood shooting. They actually acknowledge that prediction of violent behavior is not possible in any meaningful way. If you don't read the whole thing, look at Appendix 13 (PDF page 87). They actually acknowledge that prediction of violent behavior is not possible in any meaningful way. If you don't read the whole thing, look at Appendix 13 (PDF page 87).
Oh, and Appendix 6 (Identifying concerning behaviors) pretty much sums up AoSHQ regulars (PDF page 74).

One time when I was at state, I took a Piedmont flight to DC. Prop plane. It landed in Rocky Mt, Elizabeth City, the first time I puked, Norfolk, Va, the second time I puked and finally DC. I think it cost $38 for the trip. One of the sickest I have ever been.

I wound up knowing the guys that ran the thing, Ed O'Heron and Mr Davis. They had Norfolk and Southern money in it and I made some money on the stock. Still have my Piedmont Airlines "Bonus" card AND my lifetime club membership, now US Air, that I bought 30 years ago for $500. I misplaced the card and they did not have a way to replace it so they sent me on with the expiration of 12/ 9999. Found the old card the next week

Headmaster: So just listen... now did I or did I not do vaginal juices?

Pupils: Yes sir.

Headmaster: Name two ways of getting them flowing, Watson.

Watson: Rubbing the clitoris, sir.

Headmaster: What's wrong with a kiss, boy? Hm? Why not start her off with a nice kiss? You don't have to go leaping straight for the clitoris like a bull at a gate. Give her a kiss, boy.

Wymer: Suck the nipple, sir.

Headmaster: Good. Good. Good, well done, Wymer.

Duckworth: Stroking the thighs, sir.

Headmaster: Yes, I suppose so.

Another: Bite the neck.

Headmaster: Good. Nibbling the ear. Kneading the buttocks, and so on and so forth. So we have all these possibilities before we stampede towards the clitoris, Watson.

170 gifts for a woman you've been dating for a couple of months?
You wouldn't want to spend a obvious lot of money and jewelry of any kind at this point sends a message you may not really want. She likes to dance....a couple of cd's of music she likes would be nice. If she favors a particular color, a pretty scarf (wool?) with or without matching gloves would be nice, too. Or a gift basket of bath accessories if you know she favors a certain fragrance, like vanilla or rose or something. And of course, a bottle of vino is always welcome.
hope this helps.

187 CHMJ,
I agree with the others that dating is a numbers game. If you want to reduce the volume needed, your best bet is to find some interest that gets you out to meet people and gives you a common interest at the start. I've harped on this a couple of times, but ballroom/swing/tango dancing is great for meeting women. It's fun, usually low key, minimal alcohol, and allows you to be social and interact but with enough other stuff going on that you can keep it light.

192 Toronto Blue Jays get R.A. Dickey the 2012 knuckleballing Cy Young Award winner, catchers Josh Thole and Mike Nikeas for Catchers Travis d'Arnaud, John Buck, pitcher Noah Synegaard, and outfielder Wuilmer Bacerra

Dickey agreed to a contract extension for to 2016. He'll get 5 million that his old contract paid him for 2013, 12 million in 2014 and 2015, 1 million buyout option for 2016. Considering what back of the rotation garbage is getting, the Blue Jays get a steal as far as the money goes.

They gave up a lot in the trade though, the d'Arnaud is the top catching prospect and is major league ready, will probably be called up in May or June. Buck is a journeyman who doesn't hit for average but has some home run pop, he'll be a placeholder for d'Arnaud, then a backup. Synegaard won't be in the majors until 2014 at the earliest, but he's a stud in the Roy Halladay or Chris Carpenter mode. Bacerra is an teenaged prospect who was highly rated until he got his jaw broken by a fastball to the face. Very iffy, that's psychologically hard to rebound from, especially for a kid just starting out in pro ball

Dickey is pledging $300,000 of his contract to a charity of the Blue Jays choice. He's a good guy, I wish him well, especially against the Yankees

wanted me to start on the next one. I don't know. I'm just some bored
idiot that wrote chapter one and didn't stop. But we shall see.

I am so excited about this. I grew up in rural GA with a crazy ass family and I can just about imagine how good this book will be. So glad to see it finally coming out!

How many?

What I've heard from guys who've had success with online uh "dating"--and I've had before-online-dating-was-a-thing experiences that suggest these guys are right--is that your best bet is to work it sort of like fly-fishing: Bait with a brief introductory message, and if she responds at all, drop whatever your "let's meet for ______" schtick is right away, in direct response to whatever her initial show of interest was, no matter how mild--or even seemingly negative--it is. Because she'll never have a stronger interest in her idea of you than she has right then.

Basically, if she's really into textual-you, he comes off like a decisive I-don't-have-time-for-this-shit character (which appeals to most), and if she's not really into textual-you (which you can only exacerbate with further textual elaboration), you don't have to waste too much effort.

Yeah, it's unromantic. The whole deal is. Almost all the women there are there to fuck with and flake on dudes. Throw 'em back before the stink gets on you.

Today, I journeyed to the Peoples Socialist Paradise of Bloomington to shop and overheard a confab that left me scratching my head.
Younger lady says "I only pay with cash. Credit card debt is to easy and to hard. Easy to rack up, hard to pay off." (sensible girl, thinks I)
Older man replies "But cash does not stimulate the economy. It's an A and B transaction. For the economy to really benefit from the holiday sales, people must use credit cards. This benefits the buyer, the seller, the credit card co. and its employees, the debt servicing peoples, etc." (yeah the pompous asshole actually said etcetera at the end of the sentence.)

Now I sort of wish I'd let him, but there was no way of knowing that at the time. Fortunately he was almost as happy, though completely mystified, to get me skein winders and other yarn things. Only other thing he *refused* to get me was fiber since he said I'd spin it and then not keep whatever I made from the yarn, which is prettu accurate.

I feel for you boys. There is exactly one woman I know, besides me, who
appreciate what men have to offer, and let the other shit go
***************************

I'm finding, to some disturbing degree being never married in mid thirties, that the only options left to me are divorced women with kids unless I go overseas and meet a woman abroad, something I thought was unique to my experience, but apparently a lot of men in their thirties who never married for one reason or another are doing this to. They are more affluent at that age and have the money to travel in this regard.

These are typically the same women who got married at 19, regret it, and look longingly at me as the one that got away. That actually makes me feel worse. I'm only considered a catch when it's too late?

If I were divorced with kids of my own I wouldn't mind this type of dating pool, because we're all on equal footing, but it seems a lot of women want me (despite having no experience as a father) to raise their kids, and then to add insult to injury, they are not interested in having more kids, so instead of fathering some of my own, I only get the benefit of raising someone I have no blood relation too.

And then they get MAD, like seriously OMG, how dare I not sacrifice my life to support their lifestyles and kids, completely unable to see the logic of what I'm asking for here. I want to support a wife through her pregnancy, and I want us to raise our child together, equal in our life experiences, but this is somehow a horrible and selfish thing to ask for.

Sorry for being longwinded, but it is depressing to constantly deal with this attitude.

304 I know how you feel. I'm thirty and starting to see the same thing:
women who've spent their twenties partying and focusing on their careers
are now hitting their thirties and start hearing that biological clock
ticking. You can tell that they don't actually care about you, but just
want a sperm donor.
***************************

Kinda sucks spending your twenties waiting for everyone else to catch up with you and act like a fucking adult. I was never a partier so I missed out on a lot, mostly because I have trouble understanding the mentality of people who consider getting stoned/drunk unconscious and wake up in strange homes as their idea of fun.

305 Also high capacity magazines cause terrible mayhem and destruction especially against young children.

Fucker was a representative for MAIG.

They have attacked constituents and police officers, destroyed houses with sledge hammers, and even stolen gift cards donated for the poor. No crime is beneath them and no enormity beyond them."

Alternate routes of communication are simple phone and text. They can shutdown the entire system for a few days, but they have to let 299 of 300 million have their phones back or the system will collapse.

Word of mouth will take care of the rest. We heard earlier about the 20 million hunters. Add to that those like me who own firearms for political reasons and have never purchased a hunting license.

Once it was obvious the shooting had started, the feds would be fish in a barrel as long as the military does not go full-Assad/Qadafi on us.

321 Piece of cake...

I was cool as a bean. From the Bachelor Party; thru the week beforehand; at the rehearsal dinner; hanging out with my dad morning of the day; getting dressed; waiting in the ante-room, with my Groomsman; standing at the alter, in-front-of-G_d-and-everybody; even, when the music started playing. All. Good.

Then the "march" started, the doors opened and she emerged with her Dad. And my heart stopped. Then it started beating about 200 bpm.

She squeezed the crap out of my hands and used her bass for the vows -- and I was all alto, like a 13 year-old.

I absolutely still dig her! And, I ain't buying nothing with a cord... for ANY Holidays, ever again!

Yep. I agree, as much as I hate that this is the case. I'm basically an introvert, so I shun social gatherings for smaller groups and usually hide out in a corner, and been that for a long time.

Now that I'm older and feel a sudden urgency that life is passing me by I never let any opportunity to talk to someone go to waste. Most women are too busy doing their own thing and ignore me completely, but I've struck up friendly chatter with several very beautiful women in the past few months at the Apple store, my optometrist, supermarkets, etc. Wherever there's some pretext that helps me engage in conversation. Law of averages says eventually one of these women will be available and be interested in me too.

It's just location here. I tried the Republican clubs and Tea Party places but they all have families and it feels weird trolling for dates in that setting (plus too much bickering and cliquey attitudes to deal with too)

If they make the playoffs, they will be behind everyone else looking for a coach, so they probably wouldn't be able to find anyone better unless they recycle one of the fired coaches. Plus, they will be drafting in the middle of the 1st round, not many elite QB's going to be there, and a new coach is going to want a new QB. Gay Cutlet isn't going to cut it, and neither is Jason Campbell. So they will keep him for those reasons and that the McCaskeys are pretty cheap and don't want to have to pay him out.

The last report I had said that the surgery at the end of October to put in a plate where they'd had to remove part of her skull had gone very well and they think she'll be able to go back to High School after Christmas. This is a huge miracle and I wanted to let those who prayed know that there were indeed answers.

She graduates this spring, but will take a gap year to fully recuperate, and then start college.

Homeschooling's going fairly well. We didn't start until October, so I keep having to reming myself not to freak out that we're "behind".Eldest Kidlet is doing pretty well, especially since now that she's in 9th grade the curriculum is intended to be self-directed and she was never much of a self-starter before. She's mature enough to realize that theteaching opportunities and wider fields of study that homeschool offers would be completely unavailable in public school, so I think that helps her attend her studies.

All 3 get hot enough for soldering. Electric (i.e. 120VAC wall plug-in) comes in the most sizes, and with various tips (the usual ones, plus ones suitable for removing many-pin ICs). Battery-powered ones are usually only good for electronic repairs. The butane-powered ones are neat, but they have to light up, so using one around flammable gasses might be a bit risky.

I'm *thrilled* she's missing all that, and so is she. They had a lock down situation about a month ago when one of the students threatened to kill his parents and others, and she's not sad at all to have missed that. She's blossomed so much, even teaching Jewish traditional dance at the church, now that she's not around hundreds of people for many hours a day.

463 Soldering Iron: Electric-, Battery- or Butane-powered?
Posted by: Arbalest at December 18, 2012 12:33 AM (BbtTA)

I got a butane one when I did a lot of work under car dashes. Still going after 20 years. Maybe battery ones are better these days, but the ones I used back then were next to worthless.

Hi, all,
This happened in my family during the late fifties. My aunt was quite the thing. Very attractive, liked nice things. They used to have rag mops. When they came out with the nifty sponge mops, my uncle decided to give her one for her birthday. She threw it out into the yard. He went out and bought her a different gift.

I read the What I Saw At The Coup story linked way above, and found it very uplifting. And not so far fetched at all. Since I'm too lazy to go back and find the original tiny.url, I've copied the actual link into my nic for those that missed it.

Apparently the dance was very well recieved by the family, which EK was nervous about, and the only oops was having to restart the music since she didn't recognize the intro to the song as being the correct track.

The girls will be dancing this Sunday for the congregation as well, so the time to practice afforded by their all being at home instead of seperate schools is *very* helpful.

My experience is that the battery-powered soldering irons are good for repairs ... I need a wire splice soldered, or a wire soldered back in, and the battery-powered iron works fine. 50 or more fixes, at one time: no. I've used a butane-powered iron once; nice, but not enough experience yet.

This leaves the traditional iron. Avoid Radio Shack; once upon a time ... but now, maybe they have something, but I think a bit too much risk.

Try Fry's or a real electronics supplier. Electronics supplier, not Electrical supplier. They are usually quite different.

552 I'm pretty tired, but I'll annoy you folks with a quick story before bed.

There's a parking garage for my subway stop. There is a section with a concrete birm about 6" high. No slope, it is vertical, so you don't want to park a Mini-Cooper there. It is striped for parking, and large vehicles often do park there when the place is full.

There was a Jeep Wrangler and a Chevy Silverado up on this platform. My Hyundai Santa Fe got up there with no problem.

Simple pleasures can go a long way.

Spent a lot of time there on business over the last 30 years. They tried the full on Euro style version but several years ago the majority of the electorate realized they were being ruined and started changing things.

Some progress has been made, for instance, being Israel's best friend, and getting some fiscal discipline.

They still have single payer and other intrusive government like arms control and state control of alcohol sales, but the ship is turning about and they are enjoying the benefits.

Grumpy the Younger and Not Ready to Unsock,

That is good to hear that Canada is starting to swing back.

I grew up in northern Minnesota, and used to run into a lot of Canadians in my youth, and I couldn't believe the crap they have put up with all these years.
They mostly seemed to be fun-loving, hunting, beer-drinking, non-messing with your life type of people.

But, I guess, sigh, it's like here, where the cities and "do-gooders" mess up what COULD be fun lives.

I do wish to state, given this horror visited on us this close to Christmas,
Mankind (sic) has tried, since the art of warfare and before, to "Kill the Foe!" and to do so as to make the foe........quit. That has always been the goal of war. Fast foreward to America and the complexities of individuals within a society. The "Society" may not be at war within itself..per say, yet a sole individual could be at war with the society and the society would NEVER evenknow it. The individual will forement his/her plans....I include the fem on this equation...even though ALL the mass shooters in recent years have been male toinflict "Damage and retribution" for "Their OWN" perceived afront to being excluded from the society. No one has examined why this happens, though I am very sure the FBI is spending BIG DOLLARS on trying to get inside the early thought matrix of the mass shooter to try and prevent more of the same. The bottom line....the mass shooter had some MAJOR issues that stem from a Genisis event or just got the bad roll of the X-YCHROM's and was birthed with the hard wires THAT FUCKED UP!

Jake,
I guess head up the 54 to Carrizozo then left thru the malpaise to 25, then north to Los Lunas, then what mapquest tells me, turn left and find IH 15, to Salt Lake City, northwest on after that, and I am not sure after that point.

If you have a good winter route I would be happy to hear it for sure.

We have all-wheel drive on the Santa Fe, but no chains, so we are taking I figure a few days for the drive this time of year.

624 Tammy, that was one of the points of the essay. Plus, one of the libtards, maybe that sophomore link in the sidebar, argued that Americans couldn't possibly stand against the US military, so the 2nd Amendment would never come into play now to resist tyranny.

hmmmm, ask the Syrian army how well that theory stands up against a determined opposition. Oops.
Posted by: GnuBreed at December 18, 2012 01:00 AM (ccXZP)

Pretty good read. As relates the US Military. Hmmmm. It's a good question. My best guess is if deployed against the right to suppress "alleged" domestic terrorism, it wouldn't work well.

Why?

A). The military, still, leans right.

B). While you can co-opt many of the 0-6's and above (and I fear a great many are already), the lower ranks will question the what's, who's and why's. They will recognize names and they will recognize anomalies in behavior on the part of superior officers.

C). They will be operating on their home soil. This they will not like. A few sniper incidents will turn a great many into partisans themselves. They can easily be turned against higher authority with counter propaganda (ie. the truth). They will already suspect that what they are being ordered to do, is wrong. It won't take much to turn them at that point.

D). The leftist view of the military as stupid drones is 180 out, as we very well know.

or
you from Boise you can take I84, I82 and I90 to Spokane
or

The only thing we can do right now, is be calm, reasonable and statistically accurate. Have to let the anger subside a bit. The media is doing the 24/7 hyperbole to keep that anger whipped up. Other than those three things, we are powerless to stop it.

There are a lot of liberal Democrats in this country that are pro-gun, believe it or not. From what I understand, the people who have lost children in this are growing very weary of the media glare. There has to be a way to use that against the gun grabbers. How? I don't know exactly.

One thing that needs to stop is that "All Israeli teachers are armed" meme. It's wrong.

When something awful happens we have to remember that the kids don't want to listen to dad scream at mommy even if mommy is a maniacal bitch that dad accidentally knocked up around 1900. We just have to let mommy throw her fit, make sure she doesn't hurt herself or anybody else, and then show the kids how grown ups deal with grown up problems.

OK, I'm going to try one of those "explain the joke" things that are a bit technical.

The basic reference is to section 263A of the Internal Revenue Code, which showed up around 1986. The idea was to stuff a bunch of business expenditures into inventory (which is not directly deductible) instead of cost-of-sales (which is). The underlying problem with the whole concept is that business efficiency has long used "inventory turns" as a steering guide, which tends (depending on type of business) to be about 6 -- so you'd get a tax on 1/6 of the expenses in the first year and nothing thereafter.

The second problem with the concept was that it can start getting weird. The amount of rent you pay that is your warehouse instead of offices....that's easy. Your purchasing guy.....that's easy. The rent on the office of your purchasing guy.....errrrrrrr.... What if you have several part-time purchasing guys?.....errrrrrrrr..... What about the percentage of your HR department that is spent hiring purchasing guys?

The third problem with the concept is that you're trying to run it in the context of the Federal bureaucracy, which is none too bright and takes years to get the simplest things done.

So, what ended up happening was that congress passed a law, patted themselves on the back for solving problems and went home. The CBO scored it and said it would make big bucks. The IRS tried to implement it in year 1 and had proposed regulations that got a bunch of comments. In year 2, they revised the regs and got more comments. Companies attempted to comply with their own understanding of the law before the regs were done......I heard in a seminar that one regional retailer had a team of 40 accounting consultants working for three months -- and came up with an adjustment of $8,000 for the entire chain.

In year 3, they took another shot at the regs....but realized that companies' half-assed shot at what they thought the regs might be had already resulted in 3/4 of the first-year revenue they could possibly get and that the design of the whole affair couldn't possibly provide recurring revenue beyond the initial implementation.....so the final regs came out in year 4 and said (essentially) -- "do something about this, we don't care."

So, after all was said and done, the government passed an entirely unworkable law (which, BTW, is still on the books) and totally SNAFU'd its implementation, and just said, "whatev" about getting it right or repealing it.

690 Hi moki!

What's even worse IMO is when they play that easy-listening crap at the dentist's. I would honestly prefer they whip out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aU1wLryjuEw

691 And good morning, horde. Another lovely day in Obama's America. Get up and do your job, there is some arbitrary number of leeches who depend on you!

692 I see the ONT devolved into a ping ponging of tax questions and maniacal web shouting again ... good, good, the forum again achieves its intended purpose of allowing random discharges of pent up mystery and anger ....

693 Good morning to all my friends in a box.

My wife is really ramping up on her comments that it's time for her to get over her fear of guns, and learn to shoot.

That is not a decision that I can force her to make, as her fear of them is deeply rooted in events from her past.
But, if she feels she is ready, it's off to the range we go!

694 the worst school killing in US history happened in 1927 and didn't involve guns at all.

Seriously? (Almost - a shotgun was part of one of the killings) Why didn't someone point that out in the immediate aftermath of the CT shooting?
