That gas will be valuable as fuel after the Apocalypse. Sharp elbows can be an important self-defense tool also, protecting the toilet paper stockpile and such. OTOH, boobehs are expected to hold their traditional pre-Apocalypse value. Posted by: Cicero (@cicero) at December 17, 2012 08:01 PM (QKKT0) 23

Egypt: Salafist Sharia-Enforcers Attack Cafes In Cairo…
And once the new constitution passes they will have the law behind them. CAIRO, Dec. 17 (UPI) – Members of the Hazemoun and Ahrar movements attacked people at cafes in Cairo, chanting “Sharia is lifestyle,” witnesses said. Several people were injured during Saturday’s attack, including political activists known for frequenting the cafes, witnesses told al-Shorouk newspaper. They said the attackers fired birdshot and launched fireworks. Hazemoun is comprised of former presidential candidate Hazem Salah Abu Ismail’s supporters, and Ahrar is a self-styled vigilante youth group that promotes public virtue, Egypt Independent reported. Can you imagine being on a college team that wins the NC four of the five years you are there? It's possible for McCarron.
I worked with a former Tide wide receiver who had two NC rings, '78 and '79 IIRC. I have some pix of them around here somewhere. Rather modest by today's standard, but still nice (with diamonds). He was a blast to work with. Full of stories for die hard fans such as myself. Oh, did you ask if we threw footballs around at work? Why yes, yes we did. Posted by: DAve at December 17, 2012 08:57 PM (XDC0v) I would argue that it is IMPOSSIBLE to live in a way that is entirely consistent with a single moral code. But I focus on practical action, not theoretical ethics. Posted by: DAve at December 17, 2012 08:22 PM (XDC0v) Your argument is the nexus of the political and the metaphysical: Man's fallen nature. Being impossible to live according to a single moral code (I would posit THE single PERFECT moral code and the impossibility of knowing it perfectly) means we must proceed with humility, accepting the possibility that our practical action is wrong. This is why war is so terrible: it amplifies our shortcomings in accomplishing the absolute right thing. But in the face of evil, inaction can demonstrably be worse. Sorry I brought this over from the previous thread, but I needed epistemological closure. Posted by: Minuteman at December 17, 2012 09:05 PM (qs9G3) 169

Watching one of the hoarding shows on tv, but I don't know for how much longer. I used to find them entertaining, and they'd inevitably make me straighten house during the commercials.
With what happened on Friday, I'm less sure. Some of these folks are just lazy slobs without the sense to keep their homes as clean as animals keep their dens. A good percentage of them, though, are deep down crazy and have no business living by themselves--the woman who was storing hers and her mother's poop in a bunch of plastic bottles springs to mind. I stopped watching WWE after Chris Benoit 'roided out and murdered his family (yeah, I'm a girl--a big brother got me into watching wrassling). He was my favorite, and if pro wrestling could do that to a seemingly normal guy, I was done. I think I'm about done with being entertained by the antics of crazy folks who in a more civilized world would be institutionalized for their protection and ours. There's the one we saw today, who's all aggression and stupid one-line non-sequitors, and then there's weeks where he actually contributes in a meaningful way. A necessary read for perspective about hunters and armies: http://tinyurl.com/butw68f
Posted by: DAve at December 17, 2012 09:58 PM (XDC0v) 310
From the article: Over the last two months, the eighth largest army in the world - more men under arms than Iran; more than France and Germany combined - deployed to the woods of a single American state to keep the deer population under control.
But that pales in comparison to the 750,000 who were in the woods of Pennsylvania or Michigan's 700,000 hunters have now returned home. Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia, and it is literally the case that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world. And that is just FOUR states. The total population of registered hunters in America today ranges from 23 million to 43.7 million individuals. It's either a sock or a really really bad troll. It was spouting ridiculous "SoCon" stuff earlier. That lasted until I posted an old comment (like 9days old) from the same hash saying that SoCons were ruining everything. Then he started claiming a conversion.

ACE'S PROPHESIES What I can't understand is the simple hate, the hate for hate's sake, the hate of The Other for the sake of Self-Affirmation. I especially can't understand the hate coming from the sort of people who will insist to you, quite seriously, that they have essentially purged all primitive and dark emotion from themselves and now exist on an elevated Oprah/Chopra plane of pidgin Zen harmony and balance. Likewise this sort of thing -- the "taking delight" or laughing at some kind of human flaw or sin -- is of such a de minimis or venial nature that I wonder if we overconcern ourselves with this sort of thing in order to avoid thinking too much about more serious things. Okay, since I can't think of anything juvenile to say, here's something I ran across yesterday while reading more about predicting human behavior. You guys may have seen it before, but this was my first chance looking at it. It is a PDF document and pretty long. Long story short, the military was looking into feasibility of predicting violent behavior in the wake of the Ft. Hood shooting. They actually acknowledge that prediction of violent behavior is not possible in any meaningful way. If you don't read the whole thing, look at Appendix 13 (PDF page 87).
Oh, and Appendix 6 (Identifying concerning behaviors) pretty much sums up AoSHQ regulars (PDF page 74). http://tinyurl.com/csd5nrn Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at December 17, 2012 10:35 PM (1OZSU) 347

Bad games, bad networks. The NFL could have done itself a favor by remaining apolitical. They certainly have the power to tell ESPN and NBC to leave the politics outside of their game broadcasts. For either side, obviously, not that there's any risk of rampant right-wing-ism breaking out anytime soon. It indisputably and objectively hurts the brand-name and if the leadership at the league and the networks had their $ making priorities straight we wouldn't have Olbermann and Costas vs Nobody on every broadcast. I don't want Limbaugh vs. Olbermann on the damned game either - keep sports apolitical. Too bad that once again only a right-winger is proposing a truce while asshats like Wilbon and Tom Jackson dictate the discourse. Not even bothering with Parker - low hanging fruit. Should be fired but won't be. Wonder why ? Posted by: SocietyIs2Blame at December 17, 2012 11:48 PM (WLuv5) 355
