The War on Women (Action Movies). [krakatoa]

This post evolved from my email comment on the pointlessness of Keira Knightley's character in Pirates turning into some kind of swords(wo)man for no apparent reason.

Anyone else tired of the way every movie must shoe-horn in an action-hero chick? Even when the movie is specifically not about action-hero chicks?

That has gotten very old for me. Very few actors, much less actresses, can physically pull it off. Even fewer do it within the context a story that makes it the least bit plausible. But on the rare occasions they do, those women are forever hot in a way that makes those who cannot just seem pathetic or exploited in comparison.

I watch these films with the perspective of someone who actually has trained in hand-to-hand and has experienced the flesh & blood physics of hitting, being hit, and tumbling (e.g.: knowing how to take a hard fall). From that, I appreciate scenes that I think many overlook. I may be in the minority.

For instance, this scene from Van Damme's Maximum Risk is just incredible in its brutal realism:

This is hardcore close-combat fighting before the UFC made it popularly (relatively at least) understood. It's not your normal JCVD action sequence. No splits or silly round-kick/hook-kick face slapping combos. It's not really artistic action compared to a Jackie Chan flick. But it is just intensely gripping. It isn't about looking pretty. It's about survival. Even when it looks as though it is going to go off the rails with the knife, they keep it within the realm of the possible. This scene was way ahead of its time, and it still makes my blood pump in a way few movie fight scenes are capable. It ranks up there with the knife fight scene in Saving Private Ryan.

Point being, realism scores highly for me, be it guys or gals placed in action roles. They don't have to look like they are black belts. They just have to look like they are performing actions that don't look or feel contrived within the context of the story, or over-done with wire-work and cut-scenes.

Ace liked this scene from Firefox, and I do as well.

It's not a highly skilled fight, and for that reason, the context given by the scene is crucial. It's just a relatively average man using his fists, the tools at hand, and most importantly, his fear to grit out survival.

If your movie is set in the world we all live in, let the audience actually be able to relate to the hero or heroinne in real-world terms. John McClain's character in Die Hard isn't popular because he's able to do things the rest of us can only dream of being able to. He's popular because he survives in ways everyone can relate to. The Die Hard franchise wouldn't be nearly as popular if the first movie suffered from the excesses of fantasy action the sequels often do, and there is a free lesson there for any director willing to take it to heart.

If the hero or heroinne must be improbably skilled, I think Hollywood could help its cause quite a bit if they would cast and more importantly, write in a way that allows us to suspend our disbelief. You have to get the audience to buy into what your are selling. So to go to an extreme, Christian Bale's fight scenes in Equilibrium are fantastic while being completely unbelievable in the real world.

Now, you may have noticed that all the scenes I approvingly refer to are about guys. If you are a feminist, you most certainly have, and in penance, I am going to reduce my instances of video objectification of women later tonight by the number of scenes referenced. Which should leave enough time for dinner and a movie. It'll be like a real date night.

Just, um, without a woman. So it'll be pretty much like a non-date-night as well.

In no particular order and in in my opinion, here are some action-chick successes based on contextually achieving a buy-in to their bad-assery:

Linda Hamilton (Terminator 2)
Summer Glau (Serenity)
Carrie-Anne Moss (Matrix)
Angela Bassett (Strange Days)
Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil)

Who's on your list, and why?

28 Even Gracie Brothers doesn't teach martial arts the way we were taught when I was a kid. We were taught to avoid any altercation but to be ready to use lethal force if necessary and were taught those techniques that could result in that outcome. We didn't wear our uniforms in public either.

We ran all day and climbed the trees
Without the fear of falling
But with respect for gravity
And always felt it calling

We rode in cars without air bags
The steel dashboard projecting
On slick hard seats in front and back
With no seatbelts protecting

We ate the food called poison now
And still grew into Titans
Because we ran or rode our bikes
And did our own fist fightin’

We heard an independent call
And hated slavery’s chains
We roamed at will and rode the waves
And suffered freedom’s pains

That one or two were taken out
Pursuing freedom’s verve
Was caution tale and understood
And served to steel our nerve

Yet now the children prattle by
In uniforms once earned
A tear comes to my wizened eye
And lesson hard is learned

The pain that you’re protecting from
Was once a stage of growth
So choose between a man or child
You cannot have them both

32 I think when the story has been written to explain these women (or men in the case of Equilibrium) doing amazing things, it allows for the suspension of disbelief.

I think this was done in all the case of the characters played by Glau, Moss & Jovovich, which allowed me suspend my disbelief.

Hamilton & Weaver's characters did nothing really physically impossible. They survived, as Clint did in his scene, on adrenaline & the efficient use of munitions. Or flame throwers.

Obviously, YMMV.

49 The only thing I ever learned from watching countless horror or sci-fi movies or ANY movie were shit hits the fan and survival is on the line, and that is-

Shoot the chick first.

If you have one in your party she will get you killed, its only a matter of time. She will be the one to scream and get the killers attention, she will be the one to fall on her face and get the other 2 dudes killed trying to rescue her. She is the one that just has to call her boyfriend allowing the calls to be traced to your location. She is the one that will wreck the car that should be hauling the parties ass to safety. If death is on the line, she is gonna die eventually, but not before getting you killed. Soooo...

Shoot the chick first.

50 It's already been said, but Ripley and Vasquez from Aliens. In Alien, Ripley was more lucky, with the final confrontation being a good use of her brains to defeat the creature. In Aliens, it was more will to survive and kicking off the maternal instincts when they take the girl (do not mess with the maternal instincts). Vasquez just had everything down, even to the look.

Though, yeah, most are just 90lb girls throwing 150-200lbs+ guys around for no other reason than needing an action chick. It kinda made sense in Firefly/Serenity because of the rules of that universe, but it wasn't really overplayed on the action side until the finale of Serenity. I can't even give that to most.

53 Geena Davis, in The Long Kiss Goodnight. Her action scenes are brutal, and helped both by the fact that she doesn't know what she's doing until her memories return, and that she's tall and athletically built and thus convincing against her male foes.
Michelle Yeoh, in Police Story 3: SuperCop. It's a non-wire work kung fu movie, and she excels as Jackie Chan's partner. This one is worth seeing not only for Chan's trademark fight stunts, but for a stunt involving Yeoh jumping a motorcycle onto a moving train; she did not know how to ride, and upon being told the scene was being filmed the following day, learned enough toride the'cycle in herscene. It's actually her, no stunt performer was used.

133 Two Republican congressmen called Thursday for a national travel boycott of Mexico until the country releases imprisoned former Marine Jon Hammar, urging "all Americans" to campaign for the war veteran's freedom by turning off the tap on America's tourism dollars.
The statements from Reps. Michael Grimm, R-N.Y., and Duncan Hunter, R-Calif. -- both Marine combat veterans -- came as dozens of lawmakers pressed the Obama administration to more aggressively petition for Hammar's release. Hammar, who is locked up in a notorious Mexican prison on what his family says is a trumped-up weapons charge, is increasingly gaining the attention of Congress.
Amid conflicting signals about whether U.S. officials were making progress toward his release, Grimm and Hunter called for a national effort to bring Hammar home.
"Until U.S. Marine Jon Hammar is released, I am calling on all Americans to cancel their vacations to Mexico and not to book any travel there," Grimm said, calling Hammar's treatment at the hands of Mexican officials an "absolute disgrace."
"Hammar honorably served our country as a U.S. Marine, and we should be doing all we can to bring this innocent hero home," Grimm said.
A travel boycott, if joined by enough people, could make a dent in Mexico's economy. According to the State Department, 150,000 Americans cross the border every day.

Damn Right. A similar boycott effort worked against mexico back when they voted to that Zionism was the same as Racism. They backed down.

154 re: "I think when the story has been written to explain these women doing amazing things, it allows for the suspension of disbelief."

It takes more than her back story to suppress the real-life knowledge we all have (whether we recognize it or not) that the actual woman we see on screen slamming men around would be physically defenseless against the average boy just entering puberty--if he decided he was going to fuck her up.

It's common in female self-defense courses (that aren't scams) for the instructor to put the women he's teaching up against a young teenage boy to show them how useless standard tactics are against actual men--because that's a thing women who want to defend themselves need to know and don't learn from TV. They see the kid, they laugh and get excited to put him in his little-boy place, they try some shit, he smokes all of them in turn with near-zero effort. A lesson. Truth. How could a physically way-below-average guy like Richard Speck kill eight healthy young women together without even getting hurt? Because...he could. Almost all men could.

Fundamentally, ass-kicking female characters aren't the problem. A few exist (though they don't look like actresses). But there are even fewer men whose asses they can kick. And those guys are mostly in wheelchairs and comas.

Who are all these unaccountably weak dudes in these movies? What the hell's wrong with them? Why are there only those dudes around? That needs explaining, and it never gets it.

The protagonist in my book, which should be out in a week or so, is also an asskicker. There are some bad ass women out there, but rarely do they look like a supermodel with a boob job. They usually look more like Misty May Trayner.

183 The Gina Carano / Michael Fassbender fight scene in Haywire is the best example I can think of, but there are at least two other fight scenes in that movie that are great.

There is a near-complete authenticity in the relative body weight and strength "physics" of the fight. He can muscle her around pretty easily, but not effortlessly. She cannot muscle him around, but she can leverage him when she can get the right position.

And the coup de grace is staged with cold, brutal realism, rather than theatrical triumphalism.

189 I have one candidate for your list. The movie title is kind of fitting too.

Doomsday (200 starring Rhona Mitra, by Neil Marshall who also did Dog Soldiers.

Rhona is a complete fucking badass lethal human weapon. She tops any of the above mentioned female characters Krak listed because her character is set in the real world, with real world fighting abilities not superhuman stuff like River Tam or Alice from Resident Evil.

She plays a cop/soldier who is sent to find a cure for a zombie-type virus ravaging England. She fight not only zombies, but also Mad Max type feral humans, and a gigantic hulking mass of a human gladiator. There's no weird Gun-Kata or supersoldier abilities, she just plain kicks ass and gets the shit beat out of her too. She goes toe to toe with more than some of the male characters are able to handle, and in one scene she's grossly overmatched but still manages to be the last woman standing.

If you haven't seen this movie, I highly encourage you to rent or torrent it.

231 Others have mentioned it, but Gina Carano's scenes in Haywire are the only realistic girl fight scenes I can recall...

Most actresses have the weight issue, but that's hardly Gina's problem. Her fight weight is about 145 and her walk-around weight is comparable to most men. Since that's clearly muscle and not fat, yeah, she could really beat most men in a fight.

That only becomes more true when you factor in grappling, which cancels the weight advantage to a large degree. Royce Gracie beat Dan Severn (150 vs 230 lbs or something crazy like that) with grappling in the first UFC.

Summer Glau's last "fight scene" (for just a few moments, but still) in Serenity comes to mind. Not for one second did I believe any of that.

Ultimately, that's what makes or breaks it. Suspense of disbelief. Female action stars don't need to be Gina Carano, but they should at least be able to move QUICKLY enough so that it looks like they hit reasonably hard. Glau gave it a good try but Serenity's bar fight was a little slow in a lot of parts, alas.

Around a week before the vote, some 50,000 Islamists marched through the provincial capital, Assiut, chanting that Egypt will be “Islamic, Islamic, despite the Christians.” At their head rode several bearded men on horseback with swords in scabbards on their hips, evoking images of early Muslims conquering Christian Egypt in the 7th Century.

They made sure to go through mainly Christian districts of the city, where residents, fearing attacks, shuttered down their stores and stayed in their homes, witnesses said.

The day of the voting itself on Saturday, Christian voting was minimal — as low as seven percent in some areas, according to church officials. Some of those who did try to head to polling stations in some villages were pelted by stones, forcing them to turn back without casting ballots, Christian activists and residents told The Associated Press this week.

The activists now see what happened in Assuit as a barometer for what Christians’ status will be under a constitution that enshrines a greater role for Shariah, or Islamic law, in government and daily life. Even under the secular regime of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s Christians complained of discrimination and government failure to protect them and their rights. They fear it will be worse with the Islamists who have dominated Egypt’s political landscape since Mubarak’s ouster in February 2011.

“When all issues become religious and all the talk is about championing Islam and its prophet, then, as a Christian, I am excluded from societal participation,” said Shady Magdy Tobia, a Christian activist in Assiut. “If this does not change, things will only get worse for Christians.”

255 Pffft, women fighting scenes. The ONLY woman's fight scene that is even worth talking about is the mud fight scene from Stripes. Otherwise women's place in movies should be reserved for sex scenes or for background eye candy

256 women in fight scenes? I wonder how much of a dilemma liberals have with that? you have to allow women every opportunity to not be women but how angry are they going to be every time a 110 pound woman cop gets the crap beat out of her by some 180 pound high school guy in a movie.

259 Anybody who has ever been hit by say, a medium-size guy and a great big guy can tell you, there's a world of difference (and yeah, that would be me). A medium-sized guy in good shapewill stun you with a well-placed hit, but a big MFer is pretty damn strong just from hauling his own mass around, and when he hits you, it's like a pile driver. With a really big guy, your best bet is to get them on the ground, get away from them and then use a tool.
A really big guy (220 and up) will break a leetle 120 lb girl in half.
I have to take exception to everyone dissin on Summer Glau. with the exception of ONE guy, most of her moves involved using people's size and momentum against them, al la ju-jitsu. However, there is that one felow in the bar who is running one way full tilt, and summer sweeps an arm at him stops him flips him over. Physically impossible. Other than that, though, I thought her fight scenes were pretty good. And I just loved firefly, and if'n you didn't, well, we'll just have to take this outside.

These women fights, the women don't get hit hard, and have a heavy guy push them around, it's make believe.

And leads to chicks walking around like they are tough...

They have no idea what it's like to come across someone who blacksout in fights. Pure animalistic energy.

Posted by: Mirror-Universe Mitt Romney at December 20, 2012 06:35 PM (T0lrq)

269 The three biggest problems with female ass-kickers
1) Fights are too long - they'd be unrealistic between two guys, and between a guy and a girl it's even more so. If you look ata long fight it usually involves both participants on the ground or out of range of each other, not trading punches endlessly.
2)The women fight like men - As others have pointed out, most men have a significant weight and height advantage over women. Furthermore, often when two guys are fighting it's not to kill, but to establish dominance. A 140 lb woman trying to trade blows with some 200 lb man is going to quickly lose unless she fights dirty and works to avoid directly pitting her strength against his.
3) They don't look like they're capable - She doesn't have to look like She-Hulk, but your heroine should have some muscle mass. Also, if you're character is supposed to be some sort of warrior woman, have her cut her hair or otherwise keep it out of the way. In a close up fight it could be used as a weapon against her.

343 I know I am late to the thread, but I just want to add my two centavos. I've got almost enough years in the army to retire, and in all that time, I've only known one female to try to keep up with the guys in the infantry world. There was a red-headed E-5 GSR team leader in the MI Bn in the 82nd Airborne Division in the late 90's when I was there as a infantry platoon leader. She was six foot tall and would hump a ruck with her men weighing the same as them and keep up with them. She also liked going to the field. Everyone had respect for her because she didn't pull the female card and carried as much gear as the guys. Every 11B in Division wanted some of that.

353 There's only three good types of fight scenes

1. A battle between two men of relatively equal strength and skill. It can per high end MA or grubby locker room brawling. It doesn't matter.

2. A grossly outmatched and un-liked character getting the tar beat out of him by a trained or tougher hero, or the reverse.

There is room for good girl fights but Hollywood is unable to make them realistic for some reason. Real chick fights are sloppy, awkward, and loud.

Bullshit. Look, I'm a fan of the Hunger Games but Collins writes set pieces with filler around them. That's why the world building is so chaotic and why it ends how it does. She needs to get from point A to point B, writes points A and B and then tries to stitch them together. I will give her this, though, her portrayal of Katniss as being deeply mentally unstable after all she's gone through is well done.

Peeta will always be too good for her though. Not that. I have Opinions on this.

In a sense, ironically, the false mundane fighting woman detracts from the astonishing women such as Boudicca, Zenobia and Joan of Arc. I'll add Thatcher, mutatis mutandis.

But we live in a fantasy age, not too different from most ages, under the governance of fantasy ideas.

Yeah, the one where Robert Duvall shoots through the side of the barn and the guy on the other side is thrown at least six feet is hard to watch. But I think Duvall's shoulder flinched a little from the recoil. So there's that.

Keep in mind I am not a doctor, but the hydrostatic/hydraulic shock is what creates the ripping loose of organs and a little bit of the wound channel. When you are required to use fmj rounds, you have to either go for blunt force with a bigger round or ripping things up with a really fast round. This is talking about hits not to the head or heart for kill shots. The 7.62 will be blunt force.

469 Geena Davis in The Long Kiss Goodnight had some pretty intense scenes. In one she was locked into a chair by the bad guy and then dunked underwater in some kind of water wheel thing for a LONG time. Before she went under the water she told the bad guy if he let her out now, she would let him keep his arms. In another oneshe and her kid were locked by the bad guy in a freezer with the temperature at -150 or so and left to die. She was going crazy trying to start a fire with friction to save her child and herself.

It isn't exactly chicks, but there was a wildly choreographed fight scene in a "Russian Mob" genre thriller starring Viggo Mortensen. Viggo and some guy were in a steam bath (towels only) and had an incredible fight with those curved linoleum knives scraping and clattering off the tiles. Can't remember the name of the movie, but it was a good fight scne and almost surreal. Mortensen was interviewed and asked about the significance of the fight scene, and he said to just enjoy it for the pure choreography of it.

But if you're here to search for truth or maybe discuss or learn something together that's a different thing and you might find a place here. Yeah because now with prostitution illegal, nobody commits sexual assault against kids right? This is the most lazy argument out there. Protect the kids, so don't do X. Ban guns...for the childredn of course. Ban video games, for the children of course. Read what I said....CONSENTING ADULTS. As in a grown man and a grown woman want to exchange sex for money. Which part don't you get? CONSENTING or ADULT?

Ask youself something....why are drug crimes so violent? Hmmmm. Could it be because it's illegal and in order to get drugs you have to deal by definition with criminals? What happened was alcohol was criminalized? Gangs sprang up who provided alcohol to people? What happened when alcohol was decriminalized? The gangs went away. Hmmmm. Imagine that. Now you can go to a 7-11 and buy beer without any violence.

509 The way to go is magic, superheroines (despite how badly they've been done so far) and action that is not brawn-on-brawn.

1. Arwen riding for the ford and stopping the ring wraiths with magic. Not hand to hand combat but intense action, and credible in context.

2. Pretty much the whole of Crouching Tiger, because it doesn't try to be realistic, which it can't be, and because ass-kicking women really are essential to the story.

... I think there's an opening for a good Supergirl or Power Girl movie. Supergirl can beat up who she likes because she is (or rather was and always should be) Kryptonian. Power Girl doesn't know who or what she is and neither does anyone else, which is why she's not as good, but she's got that great costume and she still has a rationale for monstering guys.

529 I didn't say that prostitution and drug use do not have negative effects on society. I said that the drug war has been worse for us than the drugs would be. No knock raids, the militarization of police forces, asset seizure and forfeitures from people who have not been convicted of any crime, and the creation of an adversarial relationship between the cops and the communities they are supposed to be policing is far worse than some kid smoking a joint.

One of the most important rules of leadership/governance is to not give an order or pass a law unless there is a reasonable chance it is going to be obeyed. Unreasonable laws and open defiance and subversion of those laws breeds contempt for the good laws as well.

And if I really have to explain the difference between hiring a prostitute and hiring a hit man this conversation is probably pointless.

White guys under 30 voted Republican. So did White girls under 30. Mitt Romney won Whites of both sexes and all ages.

The Republican Party is losing, including losing the young, because it has agreed to mass immigration constantly reducing Whites as a share of the population, despite the fact that it gets 90% of its votes from Whites, and non-Whites go 80% Democrat. If a general lets his army be destroyed, he'll lose the war.

538 "529 I didn't say that prostitution and drug use do not have negative effects on society.

Ok, let's start at the beginning again, because you seem to have gotten confused.

1) Are all children people?

2) Did God say "Thou shalt not kill?"

Ok.

1) Are all children people? Yes.

2) Did God say "Thou shalt not kill?" Yes.

So what is the syllogism?

Murdering (yes, murdering) any baby (even rapist babies -- nice) is wrong.

(Now, if the life of the mother is at stake, and there really is no option, that's slightly different.)

578 I don't see many American films where actors (the term now applies to both genders) can pull off a believable sword fight. It is actually irritating to watch most of them make poorly executed moves lacking any pretense of power and control. I would agree re: better to look realistic rather than making obviously faked and badly done moves that reveal you are an absolute amateur. ====================--------------------------- Very few American women train in schools that teach the different forms of sword and spear. Fewer of them attain first black and the higher ranks where they would develop the necessary control. Part of the possible reasons: schools such as Shaolin are going to require a certain level of contact during sparring, and they allow a larger range of hit zones. So, in sum, you have to be able to take and give a hit. This reaction is probably changing for the under 20 crowd due to so many females having access to competitive sports and as a result, growing up learning to take it on the chin in a way their mothers often did not.

579 re: Glau in Serenity. Glau appears to have dance training and that allows a relative novice to pull off some of the spin kicks and related stuff with controlled movements. What she does not show is the power of a trained martial artist. So its pretty if you consider it a dance, but it wouldn't accomplish much. But she doesn't appear silly like so many others have ended up doing, so she passes.

581 I realize this thread has died but one more comment. Hollywood actors have to maintain the ultra thin look. If you run into them in real life.( I have occasionally) you are shocked at the difference between what the camera puts on and the real thing. Some of them look as though they were locked up in a concentration camp.
My point being that selection process which demands actors with that thin of a body frame eliminates many actors who are also athletes. So they find actors who are athletic and coordinated enough to learn the moves if not the power behind them.

@55 Petite female can be quite lethal when they reach an advanced(black belt) level. It does depend on where they trained however. Mass matters when when you are untrained or at the lower levels-- or when you face someone who is trained and shares the same ability level. If that does not exist, it is knowledge and skill that determine the results. In those cases a little women can indeed take out a much larger guy.
