Update: Good article by Conor Friedersdorf. America has been having a "conversation" on gun rights. The gun control advocates are just mad that they lost it.

This is what I mean when I say that the Dem party is NOT the party of youth and the future, no matter how much they try to portray themselves as such. To even have Du-caca-s's name out there as a potential senate replacement is a testament to how dry the well has run in terms of mainstream Dem "talent." You're telling me they can't find ONE young Democrat with a promising political future to take FrankenKerry's seat? In MASSACHUSETTS?

You think the DOPE has trouble with young, untested candidates saying stupid things? That's nothing compared to the Dems. The mainstream base of the Dem party are all a bunch of aging fossils; FDR and JFK voters. The youth in the Dem party are all militant extremists of one type or another - out and proud socialists like OWS, or strident anti-war harridans like Code Pink, or racist hatemongers in the NBPP or the Rainbow Coalition. That's one reason Sandy Vagina Fluke has gotten so much pimping (no pun intended, though richly deserved) from the Dem establishment. Despite her whore values, she's relatively sane in comparison to most of the under-40 members of the Dem party.

They're dying off and they know it. The old fossils who've voted straight Dem for decades are going to start kicking the bucket in droves pretty soon, and it scares them shitless. The fact that most of the Dems in power today are themselves older than Methuselah doesn't register, because they're so power mad they're convinced they'll live forever.

Speaking of unions, one of the best pieces I have read this morning, so far is at freebeacon.com. It's their headliner today.

Fight for Your (Beck) Rights

...The Supreme Court handed Beck a landmark unanimous victory in 1988 when it ruled that unions had to offer employees the option of paying partial dues used exclusively for employer negotiations.

...

Union members are required to inform the union that they only want to pay for collective bargaining in order to take advantage of their Beck rights. Union members are then assessed an “agency fee.”

However, unions have a bad track record of charging workers their fair share and cooperating with individual appeals of allegedly inappropriate agency fees. Unions have minimized the Supreme Court’s ruling by tying up so-called “Beck rights” in endless red tape.

...

“It’s become a political football,” Beck said. “When Republicans take office they mandate that employers and unions tell people about the rules. When Democrats take office they erase them to keep workers in the dark.”

President Barack Obama issued an executive order rescinding the posting of Beck rights in workplaces that receive government contracts just ten days after being sworn in.
The Department of Labor put the order into practice in June 2010

39 The Mickey Kaus article about need for unions doesn't go far enough. We did not need them in the 50s and we do not "need" them now. The question is, were they really needed in the 30s.

The creation of the unions in the 30s was nothing more than a scam to further communism in the US. And today it is the same thing. The only ones left now in major manufacturing is the auto makers in Detroit and it is evident that they are going. Either through the workers killing them or the auto companies there going bankrupt....again.

Instead the unions have moved to the government where competition is not an issue. They sure as hell are not needed there.

My understanding of the laws here in Bawney Fwank-land is that Devil Patrick (our very own mini-Choom Boy) gets to appoint someone until a special election is called. I think there's a time limit to set an election date.

But never fear, we'll be sending a new Senator who meets the proud tradition of incompetence, greed, corruption and laziness as shown by Kerry and the late, not-at-all-great Turd Kennedy.

- "Conservatives Sweep Into Power In Japan"

Obviously. Japanese conservatives don't sit out elections to send messages or to prove points.

- "Does Online Ed Spell Doom For Traditional Universities"

The real question is whether traditional universities spell doom for Gen. Y and the answer, unfortunately, is a resounding yes. To an appalling extent Gen. Y is unemployable. Keep in mind they're the ones who somehow are going to have to support the Boomers' entitlements and then whatever remains of Gen. X's entitlements. Living at home with mom and dad until age 30 and beyond not only doesn't pay too well it's not a viable resume reference. This won't end well.

We'll see. I've been saying for a while that I think the Chinese government would love nothing more than to get into a shooting war with their old enemies. They've got enormous holes in their economic and social landscapes, and the only way to keep those hidden is to distract the population with some good old nationalist warmongering. Not to mention it would help kill off a solid chunk of their young male population. Too many young men with no hope for a prosperous future are a recipe for insurrection.

Where are the people speaking up for gun owners like me?

I'm not a big gun enthusiast. I don't hunt and only target shoot occasionally to keep somewhat proficient. When I buy a gun, my criteria starts with how quickly and efficiently can this weapon kill people.

The reason I have guns is not to fend off the casual burglar, but to keep my family safe in the event of some catastrophy when the normal law enforcement procedures disappear. Also, if the government ever comes to the point where ordinary citizens need to band together to restore the constitution.

Yes, I want high capacity magazines and assault rifles.

I thought the most interesting thing about the Obama "Newtown" speech was just how
unremarkable a speech can cause the networks to break in on their
regular programming.

Honestly, this speech could have waited for the 11 0′clock news .. or better yet, the morning shows.

Obama started out fairly well, but about half way through, started to
string together (as my old Century Collegiate Handbook would describe)
“deadwood”.

Then apparently, when the speech was completed, went the wrong way to leave.

A former adviser to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign called Saturday for a
concerted national conversation on gun control, saying the country cannot
continue “doing nothing” after the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn.,
that left dozens dead, including 20 children.

Mark DeMoss, the Christian conservative public relations executive, told
POLITICO that placing some limits on guns wouldn’t have to conflict with
constitutional liberties, as many on the right contend.
“I’m a conservative and a Republican, and I believe in the
Constitution and all of the amendments. But the reality is, there are
restrictions on lots of our freedoms,” DeMoss said.

All can agree that there are persons who should not have guns in their possession. And we have done that already.

I don't think gun control in the sense of mass seizures will occur. There may be an assualt weapons ban, a ban on extended mags [really, regular capacity mags will be crippled], and probably State level requirements to lock your guns up in particular ways subject to Sheriff's inspections in places like NY and IL.

It will be interesting when the full story comes out about this shooting.

As it stands now, there is little to link the shooter to the school, other than he attended it years ago. Since the media is engaged in wild speculation trying to bring about gun control, allow me to speculate in another direction.

Could Adam's rage at the school have been caused by being molested by someone on staff there when he was a first grader? Did he tell his mother, the principle and others about it but wasn't believed. Did the Connecticut teachers union cover up something?

Liberals who wish to politicize this act of craziness should know that two can play this game.

They're in full-blown "never let a crisis go to waste" mode.

The shooting was horrific, but not statistically significant. Saying "we must do something" is akin to saying nobody should ever step outside again, after someone gets hit by lightning.

It's a big country, and so there will be a few crazies who will catch the public eye once in a while. Let's not outlaw cars because somebody decided to run some people over on purpose (metaphorically speaking).

Shit happens, you can never be 100% safe, and (here's the hard part) sometimes it's just not worth doing what it would take to stop such things. Some nut could be standing outside my front door waiting for me to come out - right now! Does that mean I should wear body armor every time I step outside? (Or all day long, for that matter!) It's just not worth the trouble, for a one-in-a-billion event.

People want to "do something" because they feel helpless, but it's really just stupid emotionalism, and it can only end up costing us more freedom.

169 It's a given that Tiny Dick Babykiller was able to do more damage with a gun than he would have done if he had nothing at all.

It is NOT a given that, had he been unable to get a gun, he wouldn't have seized upon another weapon of choice, be it a bomb, knife, or some gasoline and matches. His state of mind was clearly intent on killing people, and it is entirely reasonable to imagine he would walk into the school with a full gas can, splash the staff and children and set them on fire to accomplish the same ends.

Tiny Dick Babykiller was psychologically unstable; the guns were merely a means to an end. It is not the weapons he used that should be the point of discussion here. It is the fact that his mental state approved of and encouraged him to USE those weapons in the way he did that should be driving the national "conversation." But if we were to allow that discourse to happen, the left would have to admit that there are some people who are just bad; not necessarily through any fault of their own, but just from faulty wiring. People who are very likely to snap at one point or another, regardless of how much sensory stimuli you remove from their environment. These are the kind of people who SHOULD be involuntarily committed, because of the danger they pose to themselves and to others. But that conversation is long dead and the left will NEVER allow it to come back to the forefront.

You'd think, but the 22 people in China attacked with a knife the same day would probably disagree.

Maybe that takes extra craziness to attack up close and personal instead of from across the room.

Maybe this particular person didn't have the steady hands to make a bomb.

But I don't think focusing on the particular tool used is the way to stop things like this from happening.

183 I've never cared for Depardieu since his comments about rape.

There is still argument over the following horrifying remark from Gerard Depardieu: "I don't understand why rape is seen as bad in this country. In [France], I've raped several women." Was it a foreign language-based misunderstanding? Or did he mean it? Depardieu was once quoted in a Time magazine story suggesting he'd participated in a group rape at age nine - a mistake, it was later decided, due to a misinterpretation of what he had said in French.

So he twice was accidentally mistranslated as confessing to rapes?

Chief Tim Fitch says it is time to talk about arming civilian school

it to arming airline pilots after September 11, 2001.

“I see it no differently,” he said. “Pilots have been armed now for
many many years, we’ve not had another hijacking and the issue is, for
the bad guy, he doesn’t know which airplane he’s getting on, if the
pilot is armed or not.”

Fitch said the killing will not be stopped by legislation or laws. “If

Published: 12.17.12, 17:24 / Israel News

Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem told UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Palestinians should not offer "shelter or assistance to terrorist groups" in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus, state television said on Monday.

His comments came after Ban's spokesman said the secretary-general was concerned at reports of an air strike by President Bashar al-Assad's forces on Yarmouk on Sunday in which activists said 25 people were killed. (Reuters)

Another Chapel Hill story...in 1995 or so we had a schizophrenic who went off his meds (law student who thought he could self medicate with alcohol...I bartended some law school parties and had to cut him off more than twice) and took a WWII era rifle and shot up Henderson Street, killing a couple bystanders. Local cops discharged forty or fifty rounds at the shooter, not hitting him once. He was finally subdued by a retired Marine who tackled him and disarmed him while he was reloading.

209 It's time to have a national conversation... about the media.

But first, let's recount how they've blown the coverage of the tragic school shootings in Connecticut:

The media originally reported the wrong name of the alleged shooter. (The suspected killer was Ryan Lanza, they breathlessly reported. Turns out it was actually Ryan's brother, Adam.) Then, some in the media advertised Ryan's Facebook and Twitter pages. (This, of course, brings to mind Brian Ross' irresponsible and premature on-air suggestion over the summer that the Aurora shooter was a Tea Party member.)

As if those cases of egregiously mistaken identity weren't enough, producers and reporters began trolling Twitter, seeking to proposition friends and relatives of the victims for an interview.

Meanwhile, others staked out the young survivors, and then proceeded to conduct on-air interviews with these young children. This was unseemly and superfluous. As TIME's James Poniewozik wrote, "There is no good journalistic reason to put a child at a mass-murder scene on live TV, permission of the parents or not."

Japan's conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) surged back to power
in an election on Sunday just three years after a devastating defeat,
giving ex-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe a chance to push his hawkish
security agenda and radical economic recipe...

...An LDP win will usher in a government committed to a tough stance in a
territorial row with China, a pro-nuclear energy policy despite last
year's Fukushima disaster and a potentially risky prescription for
hyper-easy monetary policy and big fiscal spending to beat deflation and
tame a strong yen.

218 iNC Ref, #201:

"He was finally subdued by a retired Marine who tackled him and disarmed him while he was reloading."

I've been thinking a lot about a related thought.

In the Army I was trained that the response to a near ambush is, turn and charge into it. There is no time for tactics, no time to secure an advantage, only desperate aggressiveness. And the mindset has to be, you ARE going to die - but if you fight hard enough, you might just take the bastards with you.

Now, in mandatory training for an Active Shooter scenario, I learn that I should take cover, flee - engaging the shooter is a last resort and unlikely to succeed.

And I wonder whether something more like React To Near Ambush has to be everyone's default setting, if we're to see these mass shootings get less likely.

Look at attempted airline terrorism since 9/11. How many incidents have ended in ordinary passengers beating the ever-loving shit out of the guy lighting the bomb? What effect does it have on the suicidal, evil perpetrator to know not that he'll die - he's chosen that - but that he'll fail, humiliatingly?

I find it interesting that our gun control betters from across the Atlantic want to lecture us on the evil handguns and 'assault rifles' that we Americans can access like a contraceptive pill or an abortion (i.e. quite easily snark), yet some of the world's finest firearms come from the exact same Euro states like the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and Italy. They are the ones who've perfected the art and science of the firearm.

I don't have any American made firearms myself, but I'm hoping to rectify that. Soon.
