Happy Monday.

Just two items to get you started today. First, the next IPCC global warming report draft has leaked. And it has some rather astonishing admissions about the effect of the sun on climate.

Second, media fact-checkers took a lot of heat during the campaign for being stealth op-eds. Occasional guestblogger Ben Domenech has compiled a list of the ten worst fact-checks of the election; that should get your blood pumping today.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday, December 17, 2012. on this day in 1777 thanks to the untiring efforts of Benjamin Franklin France recognized American independence. French recognition and aid was the keystone to the American victory. But it proved to be a disaster for the French Monarchy who ran up huge debts aiding America. They absolutely “lost their heads” in that action

2 O’shitforbrains inserts himself in CT tragedy to further screw up parents lives and grief. Meanwhile, as expected, he and commie politicians call for more gun control. My position is “gun control” allowed the maniac to go and kill children unhampered. So the next time some liberal asswipe says something to you about the lack of gun control causing them, reverse it and tell them it was their fucking fault personally and get in their face. It is time to “not just fight back” at liberals.

And speaking of “gun control” I learned this weekend while shooting with my brothers that I ain’t worth a shit anymore with my .357. With my neuropathy it actually hurts my hands to shot.

Despite being the home of McShitty there must be something good about AZ besides one of my “good” SILs living there. Not only is Phoenixgirl, who sent me some Enterprise stuff from their last cruise there, but there is a church group there who gives away a mass of bicycles to poor kids. Thank you AZ and thank you Phoenixgirl.

6 This story would not be very noteworthy except for this statement:

Since the last installment of this story in May, nobody has collected the outstanding reward of $50,000 for conclusive proof of the continued existence of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker, nor has anyone insured a Plymouth Champ with classic car insurer Hagerty Insurance.

I personally have seen one of those woodpeckers down in the GA river swamps. And an old friend of mine, who is now deceased, actually shot 2 of them and had then stored in his freezer. But I doubt if he was still alive if he would come forward to collect the 50K. What would be the fine for shooting two birds who were supposed to be extinct. I would have preferred that he took a damn picture myself.

22 Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Can I vent about Massachusetts drivers? Here’s a fucking clue for you, jackholes – if the inch of snow we got this morning looks to you like a repeat of the Blizzard of ’78, do those of us who know how to drive a frigging favor and stay the hell off the road, you farging iceholes!

Whew. I’ve got a 7.30 meeting, so today’s stories are early. Yesterday, in the middle of a vent, I shared a Richard Burton story and a Richard Harris story. Here’s another Harris tale. . .

In 1957, Harris was on the cusp of a great acting career. One offer he received was to appear at the Bristol Old Vic in supporting roles opposite Peter O'Toole, and it was the beginning of a lifelong friendship between the two. Both legendary boozers, during intermissions they would prop up the bar at the local, managing just barely to get back in time for the second-act curtain. During one matinee, the two had grabbed some prime real estate at the bar and were loath to leave, until a stagehand burst in screaming, "You're on!" Harris and O'Toole burst out and made it back into the theater in 15 seconds, O'Toole the winner by a head. Crashing into the wings, he burst past the backstage crew and tumbled on to the stage, nearly careening off the lip and into the audience. A woman in the front row sniffed his breath: "My God, he's pissed drunk." O'Toole lifted his head. "You think this is bad. Wait till you see the other fella.”

Then there was the time when the two - drunk and horny - were looking for the flat of an accommodating young woman they knew. When persistent knocking at her door produced no response, O'Toole shimmied up the drainpipe, knocked on the comely lass' window and was let in. Harris, meanwhile, had attempted the same route, only getting four stories up before the drainpipe broke away from the wall and left him hanging in midair. So O'Toole and the girl called the bobbies. When they'd rescued Harris, O'Toole leaned out of the window. "Officers, arrest that drunken Irishman!" he shouted. "He was trying to break into our home!"

One more O'Toole, from early in his career when he was a struggling young man of the boards: In a performance of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, he had one line: "Mr. Astrov, the horses have arrived." Desperate to make the most out of such a tiny role, the actor decided that the peasant he played was actually the young Joseph Stalin. Going on stage consumed with anger for the aristocracy, hours of makeup making him the absolute double of the dictator, O'Toole could feel an almost physical wave of anticipation coming from the audience. He glared at his fellow actors, paused for effect and snarled quietly, "Mr. Horsey, the Astrovs have arrived."

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

23 Yesterday, I went with my wife to her performance with a local community band. This was their Toys for Tots event and I brought along several toys for donation.

To her surprise, it was almost a full house in spite of the show being moved to an evening performance at the last minute. And on the way out, I saw that almost all of the donation boxes were filled.

Figured that you morons would like to read some good news for a change.

''In other words, an admission that there's likely a solar role in climate beyond direct heating from the sun, such as Svensmark's theory about the relation between the solar wind, cosmic rays, and cloud formation. This should be a body blow to the man-caused global warming crowd.''

Cosmic rays, baby. As in cosmic year, the amount of time it takes our solar system to make a revolution around the Milky Way. Varying levels of cosmic rays from various parts of the Milky Way equals varying amounts of clouds.

46 Does that IPCC report mean we can possibly, just maybe, consider decoupling discussions about pollution from claims that if I drive to work I'm going to kill the planet? One of the things I loathe the most about the whole AGW issue is that it is nearly impossible now to have discussions about pollution and about actual conservation. Hell, let's take fracking. I'm a big supporter of the use of fracking to extract natural gas or oil or what have you. I also believe it is fair to ask what the impacts of fracking will be and then have an actual adult discussion about costs v. benefits. The current state of oh noes! Gaia will kill us if we do that! makes that nearly impossible. It's infuriating.

48 Not to get all race-y or anything, but it appears from the stats I'm seeing that violent crime rates and especially gun homicide rates are really a proxy for how many blacks you have in the vicinity.

According to the FBI, non-Latino whites make up 63% of the country while blacks make up just 12%; nonetheless, blacks commit significantly more gun homicides, generally using hand guns against one another.

Naturally the left wants to take rifles from the hands of whites in the suburbs in response.

It's one of the sadder things about our modern society, in that we can't have a rational discussion about race issues anymore either.

Anybody who cares about the fate of black people would be asking why so many of society's huge problems are at epidemic proportions among them. Those people who don't care are the ones who have the kneejerk response "it's because of racism."

Generation after generation of the kind of dehumanizing control that has more in common with third world dictatorships than it does with the American democratic experiment. But nobody asks if maybe it's time to reconsider who their leaders are...

60 I live in Japan, one of the few countries that mostly works OK without guns. Except the yakuza -- they have guns.

And I guess it works, but mostly because it s so densely populated -- a lot of defenseless victims are one good scream away from getting help if they need it, but that is unique to Japan. I think if it was more spread out the need for guns would be stronger. Japan has it's share of violent people who, I think, would be more of a problem with fewer eyes following them around.

Also, they have the damn Japanese bears, which are very aggressive. Their only defense against them is a little hand bell. I bike in the mountains and this past summer a woman was mauled a couple km from where I was one Saturday morning. I guess the bear didn't hear the bell.

I had a good convo with our worship pastor before church (I'm currently running A/V on Sunday mornings) about security at schools and churches and our church specifically. I asked if he knew if anyone in the service carried. Maybe one person. Once he told me who, yeah, it's likely he is. But one person in a congregation of 300 or so isn't enough.

...the confusion over the Fiscal Cliff persists, with The Hill first reporting that Boehner is willing to cave on the debt ceiling extension, even as Boehner himself subsequently tweeted "Any increase in the debt limit will require a greater amount in spending cuts and reforms."

What. A. Dope.

84 Two facts for the gun-grabbers:

(1) The worst U.S. school killings (in terms of numbers killed) occurred in Bath Township, Michigan in 1927. A disgruntled local property tax-payer made and planted a series of bombs in the school (b/c he was angry about his tax bill). He murdered a total of 45 people, including 38 children.

(2) Norway has very strict gun laws. Yet that did not stop a kook named Anders Breivik from getting guns and mowing down dozens of kids a few years ago. Breivik murdered 77, despite Norway's strict gun control laws.

Just sayin'

Same as all other gun control laws go.

They will ban "scary" looking firearms, they will try to limit the amount of ammo in clips, they may even try an ammunition registration regime.

We will still have events like this.

Rinse, repeat!!!

And with SCOAMF wielding executive power like a tyrant, look for some
action on ammo, maybe nationlizing ammunition companies.

I think the play will be for the ammo this time.

128 AtC, this whole "fracking" thing is yet another leftie straw man. I work for Halliburton and know whereof I speak. All fracking (hydraulic fracturing) does is make a controlled series of cracks in the shale formations that allows the natural gas or oil sealed in the rock to escape into the wellbore and hence to the surface. This is done with WATER, with a slight admixture of a plant-based material to increase the water's viscosity somewhat. The process takes place so far down into the Earth (we are talking tens of thousands of feet) that the notion of "contaminating the water table/aquifers/etc (oh, noes), making earthquakes happen, etc, ad nauseam,is a colossal joke. Not only that, but most of the water used for fracking comes back up the wellbore, is pumped out, filtered and reused at the next well. Indeed, fracking has been done for decades. The only difference is that in recent times the techniques have improved to the point where it is much more effective than in the past, and we get a lot more oil and gas out of the ground than we used to. Naturally, the marxist d-bags don't like this, which is why all of a sudden you are hearing all this dezinformatsia about the process. After all, having the US become energy independent and economically stronger is not what the Commiecrats want.

Easier to just wall them off completely and let the problem solve itself. In a month or two you send in the bull dozers and demo teams to level the place in preparation for re-settlement. Ultimately something like that will happen eventually anyway - but when uncontrolled it gets a lot uglier.

That's a good idea, but I've looking and thinking about something to carry anyway.

166 Even once I get my concealed carry license, I won't carry at church.

This is not for any "it's inappropriate" reason or anything like that. No, I'm afraid whatever I bring will finally bring the mass of the assorted hardware already being carried to the "critical" level.

I swear, for a sleepy church in suburban (formerly semi-rural) Texas, you'd think we were trying to field our own army. The first Sunday of deer season it always looks like those of us who show up just failed to get the memo about services being cancelled.

(Chicago Sun Times) Two people were killed and at least 16 more were
wounded in weekend violence across the city, including an Englewood
neighborhood man shot to death at 11:15 a.m. Saturday by police who
thought he was armed with a gun.
Angry residents of the neighborhood threw bottles

fought with police, police said.

No. On Sunday, we encourage our wives to carry their guns to church, because it's easier to conceal a gun in a bag than under your clothes. Partially it's because we've largely left the "Sunday finest" model of dress, so guys aren't routinely going to Church wearing slacks and jackets.

Place UNGLAZED quarry tiles (from Home Depot, etc). on the lowest rack in your oven and on a rack that is positioned just above. I put my unbaked pizza onto a baking sheet and place it on the lowest rack. The tiles above and below make a sort of oven-within-an-oven.

Also, make sure you preheat the oven on the highest setting with the tiles for at least an hour. You can bake only one pie at a time, and subsequent pies will take longer to bake than the previous.

But the first one should be done within 8-10 minutes.

Well fuck me running, the Mayans were right.

236 I stopped watching SNL when they did the sketch about the William Holden drinking helmet. That was 1980 and I never looked at it again.

Never heard of that. None of those SNL cocksuckers could carry Holden's dirty jockstrap.

237 Everyone talks about Dukakis and the tank. Here is John Kerry trying to show he knows how to use a shotgun.

That's probably why it's been such a pain the way I do it. Instead of a baking sheet, I've been trying to cook the pizza directly on the stone, in order to get the proper thin crustbrowning.

241 My kitchen is as big as a phone booth (remember those?) so I have zero space for a Kithcen Aid.

Believe it or not, you get almost the same result with a hand mixer, a bowl, and a whisk attachment. We got 'the kids' the fancy Kitchenaids with dough hooks for presents over the years and I just laugh at 'em.

And I just throw the dough into a plastic bag, seal it up tight, and let it ferment for at least 24 hours. The bag inflates like a balloon, releasing all the CO2 and wonderful odor when you open it. I know Al Gore cries at the CO2 release but the dough tastes infinitely better. Rises like a summabitch as soon as it hits the heat.

Preheating the tiles is key. Also, I do not place the pie directly on them as there's not enough room between the racks, unless you are very skilled with a pizza piel. But there really is no need. The oven is hot enough that the dough gets nice and crispy. I also make it very thin in traditional Neapolitan/NYC style.

243 You know, William Holden's death was one of the saddest. I really liked that guy.And for all-out creepy, Natalie Wood's drowning still gives me the shivers.

For those who don't know the stories, I'll tell them tomorrow and Wednesday.

Hmm. I use half my dough straight away after it has risen. I freeze the rest for use later. Tastes great. Also, I use bread flour as it is much easier to work with.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at December 17, 2012 09:16 AM (XkWWK)

245 Hell yes. Make the dough in the bread machine, coat it with good quality olive oil, cook up some homemade sauce (I start with canned tomato sauce, but that's not how it ends up), quality cheese and meat...

Since this is already turning into a recipe thread, I give you alexthechick's fail proof pizza recipe.

1. Sit on couch and stare into kitchen, willing food to make itself.

2. Should this fail, sigh loudly and flop back on the couch and begin interior dialogue about being a grownup and responsible and not having the eating habits of a frat boy.

3. Decide that driving to get the pizza as opposed to delivery totally counts as cooking.

4. Call local pizza place, no, not the one you called two days ago, the other one, no, not the one with the cannolis because you are a responsible adult and are not going to eat an entire pizza and cannolis too.

5. Drive to get pizza.

6. Realize that you must drive past Chick Fil A to get the pizza and that this is clearly a sign that God wants you to have a hate shake since you're being so responsible and not getting the cannolis.

7. Nomnomnom.

Repeat throughout the week as needed.

I remember a hit piece about Ryan on the front page of our newspaper, right after his nomination, when most people were just starting to form opinions about him. I don't think I've ever seen something so blatantly dishonest out on the front page like that. It still bothers me. Media bias? Horseshit!! The media was in full-blown libelous propaganda mode - WAY beyond mere bias.Mere BIASwas back in the good ol' days.

Using just a critical read, the article was a joke, but I doubt most people have even basic critical reading skills.First learned that a "litant of lies" means exactly 4, and that thisis in contention for some sort of world record. (Huh?) Then came the so-called fact-checking. Two of them had that exact template described in the link: "It's true, BUT ... , so we've called it a lie." Another took a few minutes of research to debunk. It turned out that not only wasn't the "claim" (as to what Ryan said) true, but their "fact" to rebut it wasn't right either.

That last item was deliciously convoluted - even Ryan's defenders screwed it up most of the time. It was about how Obama had gone to his hometown, and gave some flowery speech that made it sound like he (Obama) was promising that the plant would stay open - when he reallymade no specific promise at all. Ryan simply quoted Obama, and the idea was that Obama had simply given his town a bunch of happy talk, only to have their plant shut down afterwards. The pundits turned it into some sort of debate about onwhose watch the plant closed down during-which was irrelevant to both what was said, and to the truthfulness of what Ryan was saying. Sheesh!!

Oh, and I never bothered to look up about the 4th "lie", which was something about Obamacare. I had seen enough.

257 "The handguns were also semi-automatic, as most handguns are, because revolvers have much stronger recoil."

This was confirmed by the reporter, who went to a range and shot 1 round from an SW 600, and 1 round from a Ruger Mk. III .22 caliber pistol. There is a clear difference in recoil, and so all guns should be banned.
