| Open Thread Sun. Nite [OregonMuse]The other thread was getting lengthy, so here is a fresh one where we can complain about the 9ers-Pats game being pre-empted by TFG and his politicizing of the Newton murders. And I'm a 9ers fan, so: Go 9ers! Cheerleader pic below the fold.

I watched TFG late Friday night from earlier in the day, he quoted scriptures that day too. He was crying fake tears too. I have seen enough of him for the next four years. I barely watched anything he said the past five years except when Rush or someone played a clip. I am going to ignore him for the rest of his presidency, which I hope ends up badly for him, the way of Nixon. If not for the frigging media covering up for him, he'd already be gone. In WWE news, Alberto Del Rio turned face (good guy).
Del Rio's gimmick is/was a wealthy, evil Mexican aristocrat with his much abused manservant Ricardo Rodriguez. The heel-face turn was when the heel faction 3MB (3 Man Band), which consists of a redneck, a scottish dude, and a turban-wearing Indian, attacked the Spanish announcers for speaking stupid, foreign Mexican instead of proper American. Manservant Ricardo came out to defend their honor, so 3MB attacked him. And Del Rio ran out to defend his manservant. So now he's a good guy. The subtle storytelling of pro wrestling. Current options are to continue planning my upcoming trip across the pond while the wife watches "Real Housewives of Atlanta" or stage a coup, fire up the Xbox, and play Dishonored. If you haven't already considered Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, would definitely encourage a look (if the Russian mobs are still in control, at least). Wonderful spas, architecture, laces, garnets, amber, and dining, and comparatively inexpensive. Unless "across the pond" is limited to the UK. Then again, "Dishonored" is quite satisfying... In London, I recommend Apsley House, the Duke of Wellington's mansion which is across from Hyde Park Corner. It is filled with art (present of the King of Spain), commemorative china sets from the heads of Europe, his boots, his horse's saddle, and all sorts of neat stuff, including a huge (about 15 ft. long) solid silver centerpiece in the dining room. Also a giant nude staue of Napoleon which sits by the stairway and which all of his officers thought hilarious. If you like the history of the Napoleonic Wars (Sharpes Rifles for example) you would like this. Dover has an incredible view, but make sure unless you are in good shape you take a cab or tram to the top. It sits high on the cliffs. Having been a continuous military installation from Roman times there is a Roman lighthouse, a Norman castle, Tudor homes, super walls wich overlook the town and the English channel (and on a clear day you can see France) plus the WWII secret installations. It's quite spectacular. Canterbury's center is truly medieval, and many of the shops are in buildings which date from the 1400's. The Cathedral is beautiful and HUGE, much bigger than Westminster Abbey. There is an area which was the former site of Thomas Beckett's shrine. Thomas More's head is buried in a Norman church on the outskirts of the city center, because his daughter was married to someone from Canterbury. Also there is an ancient hostel for pilgrims which is interesting. It's a pretty place with a lot of history. For a day trip I would recommend Dover, but make sure you get there early. There are several military museums which are worth seeing as well as the things I mentioned. Canterbury would take more time,. I was just at these places in June, so I was interested to see you were interested in the same sites. Posted by: Miss Marple at December 16, 2012 09:32 PM (GoIUi) 137

When I returned to London in 2010, I was shocked at how things had changed. Besides the Rosetta Stone being behind glass as well as the throne, the traffic was appalling and there were hordes of Arabs and Iranians, which were not nearly as numerous 45 years ago. There seems to be some confusion about guns, especially in the MSM. Semi-automatic vs. Automatic, assault weapons, assault style weapons, open bolt vs. closed bolt, gas piston vs. direct impingment.
I propose that we cut through the confusion by offering two new definitions. "Good guns" are now defined as any gun in the possession of some dedicated to the safety and security of the political elite. "Bad guns" are all those in the hands of anyone else as they could potentially threaten the politcal elite. As soon as practical, we will re-define Bad Guns and Illegal Guns and then the gun problem will be solved. Or not. Posted by: JB1000 at December 16, 2012 09:56 PM (Ws44U) 176

Push comes to shove, hopefully it doesn't, I sure hope you are right about their willingness to disobey orders and I am wrong. Posted by: Exasperated Expat at December 16, 2012 09:58 PM (gkfSV) 177

#152 I think they will run Michelle, too. All of you should ask your liberal friends about this. "Organizing for America" morphed into "Obama for America" somewhere along the line... ...which is still collecting money... ...he's creating a political apparatus to hijack the Democrat party right from under their noses. 152 A 2nd term president has no need to continue campaigningÉunless they got plans for something we've not been made privy toÉ
That's all he knows how to do is campaign. Maybe he's looking to go to Venezuela, now that it looks like Chavez isn't going to make it. He'd fit ion there. Why does he go to cities to meet with people trying to push his tax on millionaires?? What is the point? Are they supposed to try to reason with us? He doesn't like to talk to other pols, instead he campaigns. Posted by: CarolT at December 16, 2012 10:00 PM (z4WKX) 181
In 1969, London was quiet and peaceful. Now it's more like New York. Posted by: Miss Marple at December 16, 2012 09:36 PM (GoIUi)
It was also peaceful in 1980, when I was there for a semester. I remember walking with a group of British students through Hyde Park after dark and marveling that none of them seemed concerned in the slightest about muggers (you did have to watch out for pickpockets, but that's par for the course anywhere you travel). I couldn't imagine doing the same thing in Central Park. Nowadays, I understand it would be just as foolhardly and dangerous to walk in Hyde Park after dark (even with a group) as it is in any American city. 163 152...I have conspiracy theorized since 2008 that he won't leave office voluntarily. Michelle runs and he remains the actual president, he declares Marshall law for some reason, etc.
The Obamas are not going away without being removed, in the non-election sense of the word. Posted by: The Hammer at December 16, 2012 09:43 PM (x9oN6) I don't mean to be a dick and everyone makes mistakes, but I see this way too often. Martial Law. Marshall Plan. The Brits strike me as being extremely embarrassed about their imperialist past. Historian Niall Ferguson drew a lot of criticism when he published "Empire" for daring to suggest that the British Empire was not an entirely bad thing. Whenever I've read the Guardian's comments section (something I try to avoid), I've thought that the hatred American lefties have for America pales compared to the loathing British lefties feel for much of their own country's history and traditions. In a Telegraph thread, I once praised Churchill, only to be attacked by numerous lefty trolls, who were quick to tell me that if I wasn't an ignorant Yank, I'd know that Churchill was The Second Worst Leader the UK ever had (with Maggie being the absolute worst). I thought the Crown Jewels were really, really underwhelming. But then, I think diamonds are plain-looking.
The standard England stuff is probably fine. If you duck over the channel to Normandy you can see Omaha and St. Mere Eglise, Point Du Hoc was very interesting--at the actual point, there is no level ground in which the craters reside, there's merely completely uneven craters inside craters everywhere. And if you go north, Edinburgh is beautiful and interesting. And if you do make it up there, there's a Burger King with an amazing view of the whole central outcropping and park near the Castle. It's gotta be the single best view from a fast food restaurant, and among the best from any restaurant. And if you're headed up north, Northumbria is just a gorgeous land. Best I saw in the whole country. Posted by: .87c at December 16, 2012 10:23 PM (5M5eS) 189
