Report: Boehner Agrees To Trade Tax Rate Hikes For Entitlement Savings. Obama Says, Thanks For The Tax Hikes But I'll Pass On The Savings

I know it's crazy but maybe, just maybe this big spending, statist really isn't interested in dealing with our spending problems. Shocking, I know.

President Barack Obama is not ready to accept a new offer from the Republican leader of the U.S. the House of Representatives to raise taxes on top earners in exchange for major cuts in entitlement programs, a source said late Saturday.

The shape and details of Boehner's offer were uncertain Saturday night, as was the exact reason the president was prepared to reject it.

The source said Obama sees the offer made on Friday by U.S. House Speaker John Boehner as a sign of progress, but simply believes it is not enough and there is much more to be worked out before Obama can reciprocate.

Tax rates and entitlements are the two most difficult issues in the so-far unproductive negotiations to avert the "fiscal cliff" of steep tax hikes and spending cuts set for the new year unless Congress and the president reach a deal to avoid them.

I don't get why the GOP is negotiating in good faith. Obama isn't. He wants nothing short of absolute surrender. Either give it to him (Let It Burn) or change the terms of the debate drastically.

Pretending that Obama is actually interested in a "balanced approached" is only paying by his rules and Republicans can't win that game.

He also wants the GOP to take 100% of the blame.

The GOP created this crisis by not fighting the debt ceiling battle.

Screw the GOP they have no principles they are willing to fight for, they apparently have no people to run strategy and they are continually outmatched by the brain trust of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama.

Monkeywrenching. Agitprop. Sand in the gears.

Propose for Obama a deal that looks good to the public but which contains stuff he and his allies will get a serious upset stomach over.

One of the morons (sorry, can't remember who) came up a few days ago with a frankly brilliant idea in that line. Make any tax hike contingent upon the Senate obeying the law and formally passing a budget on time every year. If the Senate break the law and fail to pass a budget in a given year, that automatically and irrevocably nullifies the tax hikes for that year.

Given that the Senate have not passed a single budget since Obama was sworn in, and that the last budget Obama sent to the Senate was rejected 99-0, you can imagine that this sounds simple and small and reasonable in theory, but will be a hell of a big, steep hill in practice.

The republicans are idiots. We all know this to be true.
They should have been attacking Harry Reid from the get go when Obama was reelected. The media will defend Obama to the death. Nothing will ever be allowed to make Obama look bad..... so..... attack the leftist asshole that "leads" the Senate.... that hasn't passed a budget, much less a balanced budget in four fucking years. Attack harry reid in every interview and every sunday morning talk show appearence etc etc.
Say shit like.... "We know Obama wants a balance approach to balancing the budget, so we are willing to go along with Obamas tax increases on the wealthiest two percent of americans as soon as harry reid gives us his list of specific cuts to balance the remaining budget. Specificcuts... in writing. He's had four years to work on this so he should be ready by now."
Obama is saying his tax increase is to be about 160 billions a year.... so harry only has to come up with about a trillion in budget cuts a year to balance it. No problemo.
We will hit the wall, but at the very least the republicans should be attacking harry reid as a major part of the problem. Harry will not be defended like Obama is... in the media.

88 "Elections have consequences. Eat it suckers."

Let's remind ourselves that this is precisely the sort of thing, with a Gallic sneer, that supporters of Francois Hollande shouted at their adversaries after Hollande won the French presidential election.

Except... Hollande now has to live with the consequences of his own policies, and so do the rest of France. And guess what? The French aren't liking what they voted for. Not one bit.

Capital and wealthy Frenchmen are fleeing the country. Unemployment is spiking upwards from an already high "plateau" level. Business investment has ground to a halt. Consumer confidence is nauseously low. The economy is tipping over into recession.

And Hollande's popularity has taken a complete kick in the crotch. He and his party are going to be in serious political trouble this coming election cycle.

The problem with winning elections is that the bad shit that then happens will happen on the winner's watch. A huge amount of bad shit is going to happen in 2013 and 2014, on Obama's watch. Much of it entirely self-inflicted bad shit, such as health insurance premiums skyrocketing due to Obamacare mandates. And it's going to be delightful to watch the Obamaniac left squirm in increasing discomfort as those chickens come home to roost.

Posted by: torquewrench at December 16, 2012 04:26 PM (ymG7s)

89 I don't get why the GOP is negotiating in good faith. Obama isn't.

I'm willing to bet not even 1 out of 10 voters have even the slightest clue what is "the fiscal cliff" and what it means. Only that they will see their withholding go up dramatically early next year (with their taxes, of course) and that, by then, whatever happened will be "all the fault of the GOP" because of the already in place media narrative.

Smokey McChoomPrompter knows this, and must be laughing his arse off that Boner has yet to figure it out.

Thats the problem with republicans. They are all individuals and don't stick to a talking point like the dems do....
Every republican in the house and senate should be attacking harry reid on his lack of a budget and his inability to pass a balanced budget or any budget. Attack the shit out of harry reid. the media will not defend harry, they are too busy holding Obamas water to defend harry.
It's like the republicans don't have a clue about how to play dirty politics. F*ck man. You only have to watch the dems for a couple of months to figure it out.... what the hell is wrong with Preibus? Leadership man. Get everyone on the same page and attack harry "cowboy poetry" reid for tainting obamas legacy.
"Obama will go down into history as the biggest over spender ever due to harry reids inability to balance a budget." --repeat ad nausea until even the media start to put pressure on harry for specific cuts.
this is too easy to think of.... what the hell are all of the paid staffers in the house and senate doing? don't they read the f*cking internetz? WTH?

107 Here's a key mistake Boehner is making:

Negotiating behind closed doors with Obama.

Boehner did that before during the previous debt ceiling negotiations. Came up with a deal in private that Obama swore was ironclad. Which Obama then predictably tried to renege upon at the last minute.

Boehner should insist that all negotiations all take place live, in person, on camera. With actual math. Give each guy his own whiteboard to scrawl figures upon. No more of this closed-door business.

That way, if Obama tries to bail on a deal at the last minute the way he did last time, it will be considerably harder for the media to discreetly ignore.

187 I have to say that I think the conventional wisdom on this thread is incorrect. To whit:

John Boehner is absolutely representing his House constituency. They need to go home and grumble about getting the best deal possible, even though "obviously" it wasn't ideal.

By what's the ideal for them? Certainly, it cannot be that they would want to control less money and world less power. They would naturally want to continue to consolidate their personal power by growing the government-- even those who would say they wish it to be otherwise.

There are certainly some Representatives, exclusively Repunlicans, who are not interested in this. But their numbers are dwarfed by those in the House on both sides that will be better server by an increase in the size and power of the federal government.

So, we can then say that their true motive is to grow, and not shrink, the government. So how do they sell this to an electorate which says they want smaller government?

They make Boehner the bad guy. Boehner and Obama are doing his to "us," they will tell their constituencies. Furthermore, "it would be much worse" if we were to send a Democrat in my place.

This argument is pursuasive, and most persuasive in the most conservative districts, therefore conserving the jobs of these Republicans.

And the silly little dinner theater Boehner and Obama are doing ensures that the federal government retains and grows its power.

It's a shame though that were not even allowed to see the little play Boehner and Obama are putting on. It's like they're not even trying anymore to entertain us.

I'd like to at least be able to watch the show, in the exact same way I enjoy watching a pro wrestling match: the result is fixed, but the path to that result can be surprising and rewarding to watch.

The fixed result is that government grows, that taxes go up, and we serfs get squeezed just a little tighter.

The only fun left for those of us paying for the show is to watch it unfold.

He attempted to buy a rifle at Dicks Sporting Goods but refused to fill out the background form and they told him to get out of the store and don't come back.

267 Harper is cleverly using a split on the left. His party barely wins 40% of the vote. But the left-wing vote is split among 4 left-wing parties. The Liberals, the New Dems, the Quebecers, and the Greens.

The Liberals used to be the governing party. The New Dems now are bigger and rose as the real progressive party saying the Liberals had become corrupt and too centrist while in power so long. The Green are eco-nazis, of course.

The Bloc Quebecouis are more nationalist than ideological, but being frenchies, they mainly are left-wing. But they won't work with the mainstream left parties since they want autonomy.

If the Left in Canada could unite they'd easily crush Harper.

From Wiki:

Harper's Conservative Party won a stronger minority in the October 2008 federal election, showing a small increase in the percentage of the popular vote and increased representation in the Canadian House of Commons, with 143 of 308 seats. The 40th Canadian Parliament was dissolved in March 2011, after a no-confidence vote that found the Cabinet in contempt of parliament was passed by the opposition parties.[3]

In the May 2011 federal election, Harper's Conservative Party won a majority government, the first since the 2000 federal election. His party won 166 seats, an increase of 23 seats from the October 2008 election.[4]

307 Harper won a minority govt in 2006. Won 36% of the vote. The smallest minority govt in Canadian history.

(Party who wins the most seats gets to form the govt.)

Left forced another election in 2008. Harper won another minority govt. This time with 38% of the vote.

Another election in 2011. This time Harper won a majority of seats -- though still only 40% of the vote. Liberals got crushed. New Dems ascendent on the Left.

335 Everyone MUST read this.

PLZ.

Regarding the shooting.

Michelle Hart says:
December 16, 2012 at 2:08 pm
And the father of the mall shooter last week is supposed to testify before Congress re: the LIBOR scandal

The father of Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza, Peter Lanza, was the tax director for General Electric, a corporation that paid -0- taxes on 14.2 billion dollars in profits last year. According to Fabian4Liberty, Peter Lanza was scheduled to testify in the ongoing global LIBOR scandal. In what could only be described an amazing coincidence, the father of Colorado Batman shooter James Holmes, Robert Holmes, was also a LIBOR witness in his position with FICO. According to the link at FICO, Robert Holmes was a ‘Fraud Scientist’.

From Fabain4Liberty:
The father of Newtown Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza is Peter Lanza who is a VP and Tax Director at GE Financial. The father of Aurora Colorado movie theater shooter James Holmes is Robert Holmes, the lead scientist for the credit score company FICO. Both men were to testify before the US Sentate in the ongoing LIBOR scandal. The London Interbank Offered Rate, known as Libor, is the average interest rate at which banks can borrow from each other. 16 international banks have been implicated in this ongoing scandal, accused of rigging contracts worth trillions of dollars. HSBC has already been fined $1.9 billion and three of their low level traders arrested.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a motive and a link. This coincidence is impossible to overlook. Two mass shootings connected to LIBOR.

400 A final word on memeplexes. I’m sceptical of the three Cs: ‘consensus’, ‘certainty’, and ‘catastrophe’. Nevertheless I don’t know whether CO2 will work out to be big problem, a modest problem, or possibly not a problem at all. I really don’t think anyone yet has the means to know. But to compare CAGW with other social memeplexes: if the existence of God was unequivocally disproved tomorrow, there’d be no need for the huge infra-structures of religious paraphernalia.

And, more interestingly, if he/she beamed down tomorrow and introduced himself/herself, there would likewise be no need for the same infra-structures. We’d all just get his/her phone number. Similarly if the case for CAGW was indeed proven (inclusive of all main mechanisms), the fact-space would be just as constrained as if it was disproven, and the whole memeplex would collapse. In the proven case, just as for historic major disasters or wars, everyone’s shoulder would be at the wheel, we’d all know what to do and all the social messaging and CC related promotion hierarchies and political positioning would evaporate overnight.

The GOP then is free to offer every single compromise with the knowledge that they won't actually have to vote for it. That way they can satisfy those who who would never accept tax hikes, while being able to say to the public "we were willing to soak the right like Obama wanted, but he would rather destroy the middle class then accept compromise!"

As unlikely as this is to be their strategy, it doesn't mean that we can't claim it was in order to go after the SCoaMF

411 Of little import, perhaps, but I'm writing this on temporarily borrowed wifi, as mine was shut off along with my cable and phone earlier today. Fighting the utilities battle tomorrow.

I don't say this for myself, as I still (for now) have a roof over my head and two healthy children for which I'm infinitely thankful, but please remember that there are a bunch of good, decent folks caught somewhere between the world of employment and the world of dependency who are really struggling this Christmas.

You probably know some of them. It would do them a world of good if maybe you stopped by to say hello, or even sent them an email to check in. It's amazing how quickly even really good people can forget others, when they just don't SEE those others much, because those others don't have the cash for the usual couple beers with the guys, or even enough to put together a dish for the potluck (combined, of course, with the stubborn pride that won't let them show up at a party without something to bring).

Anyway, no shaming or preaching intended at all. Just maybe a reminder to check in on your unemployed or underemployed friends in the next couple weeks. They're probably lonely and sad as hell, and could use a hello.

God bless us all.

I was just talking about this with another machine shop owner. The men work for low wages because the women and children are subsidized by the state and they get a huge chunk of money for claiming a dozen kids when they have two because there is no verification process. If an aid worker does happen to show up they claim the kids are at sisters of granny's and there is no follow up. Even when they are caught there is no prosecution and rarely are benefits cut.

Do you NEED a job? Between welfare, food stamps, obamaphones, etc you can eek out a decent middle class life. Work a little on side under the table and you're doing better than most with a job.

453 I'm saying if your option is

a) work and make $50K ($40K after tax)

or

b) make $35K tax free via govt welfare

Are you all that better off working? Obviously if your job pays $200K then it's stupid to go for option b. But if you're in the $30-50K a year range, you're really no worse off NOT working than working. Add in the savings in not paying for gas, not paying for child care, not paying for dry cleaning, etc and you might even come out ahead.

Failing again to draw the correct conclusion. The GOP leadership isn't negotiating against Obama. It's negotiating against those that want real spending cuts, in collusion with him.

Hard work is good for you mentally and physically. Even if getting yours has financial merit, the long run effects will be deleterious for you soul. joining them is not the way to go.

I agree and if you have ever met any of them you know what has happened to them - they are severely debilitated, probably incapable of ever competing in the real world - I am referring to people who are in the generational loop of welfare their mom, them, and their daughter.

I have some interaction with some people who are in these loops. It is sad to here the young ones convince themselves that going on welfare is the right thing to do. they had hoped they would not be on welfare even though they were in no way prepared by their parents or their inner city schools to hold a job in the competitive market place. it is really sad when one of them says "well I decided to go and apply for some welfare or something or other. I mean her father is not helping me and I do not make enough and it was ok for my mom - I mean I turned out all right and everyone is doing it so...."

even worse, they are in such a lousy position it is not even possible to discuss the soul destroying nature of the course they have set for themselves and especially their child.

Some of these concessions he's offering he simply would never have the votes for anyway on either side of the aisle. Democrats aren't going to vote for anything that cuts MediCare or Social Security, and only a handful of suicidal Republicans are going to sign off on a tax increase that will likely pit them in a nasty primary.

Saying we are screwed doesn't begin to cover the extent of the looming disaster. Choom Boy and his co-conspirators are bad enough; we have to help him by offering up "opposition" Quislings like Boner and the Poppin' Fresh/NRO crowd.

From what I understand, a TD on the first possession wins. If you're the team that has the first possession and you don't score a TD, any score by the other team on the next possession wins.

Since Romo threw for over 300 yards for the first time against the Steelers since the Ravens did it last season and had no INT's, maybe he deserves a little break. Also, since the Cowboys D are without Jay Ratliff, Morris Claiborne, Bruce Carter, Sean Lee, and Barry Church on the defensive side (all starters) this is great fucking win.

541 Obama is making a very smart move over here and he is basically going to destroy either the country or repubs, or both.

One of two things will happen:

1) Repubs will cave on taxes and get nothing in return. Obama wins, and he wins the narrative - I lowered taxes for the middle class! I managed to free the middle class from the republicans who were holding them hostage! I won! I got more revenue in a balanced approach etc etc...

2) Repubs will not cave. Obama lets all the tax rates go up and then blames the Republicans for the tax increases and for "holding the middle class hostage" and for being obstructionist etc etc...

These republicans better figure something out.

559 >>Besides, getting past a by the book HR dept is nigh on impossible.

Having been on the hiring side back in the day when I had a lab, I'd recommend you try to network directly with university researchers/professors. The HR depts are kind of clueless about technician qualifications (I had a bear of a time explaining that an electron microscopy tech was a lot more specialized, even entry level, than a molecular bio tech), but if you find the faculty member, he or she can usher the application through. No science/engineering professor worth their salt would turn down someone over-qualified over a stupid HR reason. You just need to make sure you get past their screen.

It is so hard to find qualified Americans in technical fields at universities, that I just think you'd have an edge there.

Are you within shooting distance of UMKC or U of Kansas?

When my husband graduated (a billiion years ago) with a physics degree and some hands on experience in chromatography type stuff, he was able to get offers in medical labs even tho he had no experience with those samples.

I realize the pay would probably be low, but the advantage might likely be some flexibility in your hours, permitting you to pick up addtl classes if you chose to try to beef up your resume for the future, and perhaps a less rigid work culture that might allow you to broaden your skills in the existing job.

I wonder if chemjeff could help you network since you're in the vague general area.

As someone who worked for a Fortune 100 company for ten years, and now have effectively been self-employed for 25, I can categorically tell you that self-employment is exponentially better, even when everything is in the can. It's just better. If any mistakes are made, it isn't your idiot superior, it's you. I can live with my own mistakes a hell of a lot more easily than I can tolerate the buffoonery of others.

Well,
all I can do it point out that it's been done before (e.g., the 1994
"Assault Weapons Ban") so it's hardly outside of the realm of
possibility. While one can point out that circumstances differ in that
the house is currently owned by the Republicans and, I would also point
out that Democrats have become exponentially more angry and leftist
since then. While a direct gun ban by Congressionally-passed
legislation may be off of the table (assuming the GOP reps actually keep their spines intact), I have little doubt the Democrat
party will implement much of their gun-banning goals via other, less
direct methods (e.g., their gun-running to Mexico).

Again, in Australia guns were legal and widely owned. Then in 1996 there was a massacre of 35. Within 2 years virtually all guns were no longer legal. Same with England. Oh oh oh but the 2nd Ammendment....lol. Yeah John Roberts will call it a tax and be good to go.
Who would have thought the US would elect a communist for president? Crazy talk.

711 And no there won't be a bill that says "GUNS ARE BANNED". There will be bills that say you can't get a gun without a 28 day wait period. Bills that say you can only buy 1 gun a year. Bills that impose a 2000% sales tax on guns and/or ammo. Bills that say if you've seen a psychologist in the past 5 years, no guns. Bills that say no guns in the home of anyone with kids under 5 years old.

Death by a thousand cuts is death just the same.

712 "Is the Washington, D.C. bubble so massive and opaque that Boehner does
not know what the conservatives in the USA think of him? What an utter,
abject failure he is as a negotiator? What a joke he is?"

Republicans don't care about conservatives.

713 "Aren't there like Vampires and commies in Albania?"

Yes. It's like Washington, DC with a better climate.

714 Obama wins even more when the OP oks tax hikes, as it damages our turnout for no gains on policy.

716 Bigelow, unlike lesser filmmakers, is dogged about placing CIA practices in their proper context. Maya is twice nearly killed by terrorists, a friend is blown to bits during a meeting with a supposed al Qaeda turncoat and “ZD30” is interspersed with clips from such grim events as the 2005 terror bombing in London and the attempted 2010 Times Square bombing that the media has been content to mostly treat as a joke.
Liberal hand-wringers dismiss all this because they live in a fairy tale of their own creation in which there is always a good, just and fair way to resolve problems and nobody need lose any sleep over anything. In reality, as “ZD30” shows with devastating vividness, we are frequently presented only with bad choices and worse choices.

718 Here's a wild idea - what would happen if say 20 Republicans "jumped ship" and "became" Democrats voting for Pelosi for speaker. In every other vote they could be Republican, but it would take away the "Evil republicans are blocking my plan "excuse, force ownership on everything that takes place the next 4 years on the Dems, allow for anything blocking Obama's proposals to be "bipartisan"...... etc,etc

Let Obama have his tax inceases, all of them for everyone. Don't raise the debt limit. Two yearsof deficit reduction. The only problem is Republican handwringing over who gets the blame. The funny thiing is, they will get the blame no matter what they do, so cut the fkking spending!

721 We're going to have to go over the cliff. Boehner has no leverage until we do. Pass House budgets along the line of the Ryan plan and make Obama veto them.

Obama wants to take us to the edge of the cliff because he thinks the GOP will blink, and then regardless of what happens they will have to share the blame. Don't play their game.

Pass budgets that will bring us into balance. Let Obama veto them. It's the only way to regain the upper hand on spending.
