All the
talk of "gun control" begs the question that virtually all of these
sorts of incidents involve somebody who is diagnosed, after the fact, as
"mentally unstable."

Better yet, we probably need better "Nut Control."

But having seen first hand just how easy it is to get somebody
committed, I fear that a call for "Nut Control" would be worse than
anything we could imagine.

The underlying problem is the definition of "Nut," and how it could
be perverted. The Soviets were experts at making political opponents in
to psychiatric cases who could be imprisoned indefinitely. Couple that
with a President who thinks civilian indefinite imprisonment is a good
idea and you get the worst possible outcome.

24 Seems like it was just 2004 when being super-rich was no barrier to being President. Of course, in 2004 being a self-proclaimed war hero was all the rage. By 2008, being an actual war hero was irrelevant again, and it was only important to be poor and black and understand other people's problems.

Amazing how each election cycle the only narrative that matters dovetails perfectly with the Dem nominee's life story.

31 This is Dunning Kruger effect revealed on proxy

Someone who is incompetent has difficulty seeing their incompetence. Some incompetents think they are super capable.

tfg suffers from severe Dunning Kruger, and that means that he thinks he is really capable, but it also means that he can look at a buffoon like Biden, or Kerry and think that they are somewhat capable.
Any manager that gives that much responsibility to morons is like a super saturated solution of Dunning Kruger.

46 Obama was never poor.

No, he wasn't, but he was in The Narrative. A regular man of the people.

From his autobiography:

The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

Obama, on the other hand, wants to destroy his own country.

We will have to read about it in the British papers, of course.

53 So it looks like I'm losing John Kerry as a senator. Every cloud does have a silver lining.

He's going from Massachusetts senator to Secretary of State. That's like gonorrhea going into herpes simplex-12. LIB.

Anyway - I know I'm not usually posting on the weekend threads, but the morning news broacast had a little segment that pissed me off. Our local radio (WBZ, for your Massholes), while talking about the school killings, spoke in awe of how SNL, which - I paraphrase -skewers and ridicules without respect for reputation or celebrity (hah!), opened last night's show with a tribute to the fallen dead of Connecticut. I didn't hear what was said, because I kicked over the radio, yelling, "that's because they want to protect their chocolate crackhead messiah!"

I guaran-fucking-take-it-to-the-bank-tee that if Bush or Romney were president, SNL would have opened up with a skit showing Wayne LaPierre offering a new line of NRA-approved Cracker Jacks with an AK-47 in each box, or upgrade packages for toddlers' cap guns, with bigger magazines and "cop-killer" bullets. And everyone would call it such - ooh! - "transgressive" humor, really speaking truth to power!

Sorry about that. AoS is the only place I can blow off steam when I hear crap like that. So, to make up for depressing you, here are two stories, one

Starring Peter O'Toole:
Over the years, O'Toole and cars have never been the best of friends. He once fell asleep while driving down a main London highway and woke up to find himself careening along the grass and through the trees on the divider. "There was nothing for it but to put my feet up on the dashboard and wait for the crash." But my favorite O'Toole driving mishap occured when he was speeding along (utterly juiced to the gills, of course), with fellow actor Kenneth Griffith.* O'Toole was racing along, happy and chatty, when Griffith piped up, "I say, old son, you're doing very well, but should you be trying to change gears with the hand brake?"

And here's one Co-Starring Richard Burton:

Early in his acting career, Burton was friends with Wilfred Lawson (famous for his 1938 role as Alfred P. Doolittle in the movie Pygmalion). Lawson, like many in his circle, was a notorious drunk. During lunch in a pub, he ran into Burton and invited him to the matinee of a show he was appearing in nearby. Burton accepted, and since Lawson wasn't due to be on stage when the curtain rose, he offered to sit with Burton for a while.

The play went up. About 20 minutes in, Burton started to worry about Lawson, since the actor hadn't left to put on makeup or costume; instead, he simply sat there, enthralled by the performance on stage. Suddenly, he tapped Burton on the arm and said, "You'll like this bit. This is where I come on."

Thanks for letting me rant, friends in a box. See you all tomorrow.

I don't think he's ignorant. I am now of the opinion that the Republican Party establishment is as much a part of the so-called Progressive movement as the Democrats, at least as far as domestic policy is concerned.

The lineage goes back to Teddy Roosevelt and Hoover all the way up to Nixon, Ford and the Bushes. Don't get me wrong; Boehner's no great thinker. It's just that he wants to belong to the power structure, even if it means being in the perpetual minority. So long as he gets his and government grows (perhaps faster than he would like), it's all good.

The common enemy is conservatives and America as founded.

"Leonard Greene ("Our Culture of Killing", December 16th) calls out video games, films and "gun culture" as motivators of mass killing. He leaves out the greatest impetus to these sick killers - the breathless, exploitive, 24/7 mass media that gives these losers the theater they seek for their twisted drama, guaranteeing that it will happen again as another loser somewhere right now has his eyes hungrily glued to his television and newspapers. Mr. Greene should pull the beam out of his own profession's eye before commenting on the motes in others'."

Mexican Hot Chocolate

Ingredients
2 cups whole milk
4 tablespoons natural unsweetened cocoa powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon red chile powder
3 ounces dark chocolate (up to 73%), chopped finely
Directions:
Heat the milk in a small saucepan and when steaming, whisk in the cocoa powder and the salt.
Allow to come to a boil, then immediately remove from heat and whisk in chile powder and dark chocolate until smooth.
Serve hot, garnished and spiked as desired.

176 Looks like Shinzo Abe and the Liberal Democratic Party were voted back into power in Japan. Despite their name, the LDP are the allegedly conservative party there, but Mr. Abe has proven himself to be incompetent previously.

His first moves? Attacking deflation by fucking with monetary policy until he gets a desired amount of inflation, and then using government-backed loans to banks to encourage private lending. So they can lose still more money when those loans go bad. And then devalue their currency even further to make up for it. Followed by another round of fucking with monetary policy until a desired inflation rate is achieved ... and on and on ....

I'm growing convinced that Silent Cal had this right: slash government spending by 30-40% and then tell the public it's going to get worse before it gets better so roll up your sleeves and get off your asses. Then slash tax rates and get the hell out of the way while capitalism works its magic. Painful but effective medicine.

1. FUPA? Excuse me, madam, but I think your ass is on backwards.

3. The long history of our country results in two unmitigated clowns (King Three-Putt & Speaker Boner) meeting to come up with a fiscal solution? Really? This is the best we can do? What exactly are their economic qualification to be the ONLY ONES that can solve this thing? And why is the SCOAMF even in the process? Presidents sign or veto legislation that originates in the congress, not make it on their own. How is it that Harry Reid and the do-nothing democrat senate is divorced from the process?

4. In the coming media-driven blizzard of gun control/ban crescendo, perhaps we should look at some sort of program mirroring the air marshal deal on flights. Train principals/etc in gun safety and use and have a weapon in a lockbox at the school. Also build some type of "panic rooms" at schools. If it wasn't guns, this evil kid would have used some other weapon I am sure...knife, explosives, poisons...just a matter of time. One story about the movie - in it, OT plays a Canadian who makes friends with an Eskimo. In one scene, they were supposed to build a sledge to escape the Arctic waste, but the screenwriter couldn't figure out how they could make one. OT suggested the Eskimo could eat his (O'Toole's) character and make a sled out of his bones and skin.

>>I don't buy into this Christian forgiveness bullshit. It's merely a scam to keep the status quo.
I'm still trying to process it, but I recently had a conversation with a new friend who told me the story of how he had visited the man in prison who was in there for raping his wife to tell him he doesn't hate him and that he hoped he can do something with his life. He intends on keeping communication open with this guy.
It was a strange set of coincidences that led to this, but the short version is that a friend of my friend just happened to be involved in an outreach program with prisoners.
This guy was talking to my friend about one guy in prison he was working with whom he said was the most remorseful person for his crime that he had ever dealt with. The prisoner was told him that he was whacked out on crack and meth and broke into a home and raped a woman. he remembers it, but had absolutely no control over himself.
The guy hated himself, was suicidal, but thought taking his life was the coward's way out and thought the rest of his life should be a living hellto punish himself for what he had done.
Anyway, my friend put 2 and 2 together, and that's how and why he got in touch.
Me? I don't know hat the fuck I would do in that situation

260 I don't hold in the instant 'I forgive' school. Especially for those who were not directly impacted by a monster, I look at them with scorn since they are going for a selfish ego stroke by pretending to be so good.

As for the ones who are impacted. If there is no struggle to forgive then is it really peace one finds? Or is it merely amnesia from the hurt? The hurt is still lurking there but bottled up just festering.

But forgiveness has to be given no matter what. Or the hurt and hate will fester and grow stronger. Until one day your whole life is defined by that hurt and hate. And the person you were is now dead.

We had that same discussion. It's tough but my exact words were, "that would be just like throwing her away." Like yours, our child is unusually small for her age. At 13 she is the same size as our eight year old. She doesn't really speak to me, hug or touch me and will not let me touch her. She says incredably hateful things and has no memory of it an hour or so later. She does go after her sister when she is frustrated. I have taught her sister to fight back and much of that has declined. This child has broken our family. We are no where near normal. I gave up on trying to figure out the why, it's just dealing with it day after day. Keeping her on a strict daily schedule is probably the most important thing we do for her.

Why yes, there were quite a few Dems in the crowd. But what pissed me off the most is no one in charge up there on that stage did or said a thing to put a stop to all the screaming and yelling that went on, so it just got steadily worse and worse.

Our daughter was about tenth from last to go up in a graduating class numbering near 200.

Afterwards as our family and friends gathered around her, I said that might have noted that you got no claps or yells as you went up on stage; instead, you got respect.

310 That was meant to read as a love/hate relationship with the Big Guy.
Love as in can't sing Mary Did You Know to the very end without getting choked up.
Hate as in can't bring my self to worship Him due to, well, stuff.
And don't start, please. I know there are those better than me who have been "rewarded" with worse. A few of them upthread.
I also know there are absolute evil ones who have been "rewarded" like they've always walked as he'd have them.

Now for laundry, breakfast and maybe a movie before football.

Truth is, they are not.

I was always envious of the ones that were less worse than the asylum I was born into. Fortunately, I had two families who took me under their wings at the right time. I think about them a lot these days.

It's because of them that I haven't climbed up a belltower with a rifle.

336 I refuse to talk about guns. The narrative should be the truth: We have welcomed, nay, encouraged, a culture of death. The unthinkable is thinkable and accepted when we have a president who is an advocate for infanticide, who sees babies as a problem he wouldn't want to punish his daughters with.

Nominated at a convention that views abortion as a sacrament, that shouted out to deny God any recognition in their platform three times.

Voted in by a people who sell their children into slavery to the all powerful state for an Obama Phone and free birth control. People who refuse to even acknowledge truth, even if it is as direct and clear as the math behind our deficits.

352 It's a POSITIVE to end up with Ed Markey as your senator?

I'm not even convinced Scott Brown is going to run. His victory in the special election was over someone who really never bothered to campaign, and when she did campaigned poorly, in a low turnout context. Do you really think all THAT is going to recur?

Bear in mind that Brown didn't just lose to Warren: he was CLOBBERED by Warren, and even then she didn't get anywhere near the percentage win that Obama got in the state. Markey, or Patrick, or any one of a half dozen other Mass. Dems, are a cinch to improve on that, and there's no way the Dems aren't going to have Brown and his truck in their sights from the moment the campaign gets underway.

Brown COULD elect to become the GOP's Massachusetts version of Harold Stassen, standing up to getting the crap beat out of him Senate election after Senate election; or -- and this makes more sense -- he could funnel all that into a run for governor. After all, even a hopeless dweeb like Mitt Romney won that ... plus the word in Boston is that Martha Coakley is planning on running next for governor.
