Open Thread: A Fable For Our Time [OregonMuse]

While looking for material for the Sunday book thread, I came across one of Aesop's fables from a collection in a free Kindle book. Unlike some of his others, there's no explicitly stated "moral" to it, so the reader ls left to ponder its meaning himself. I think I know what it means, but I'm not sure. Either way, it just seems strangely appropriate for our day and age.

The Kingdom of the Lion

The Beasts of the field and forest had a Lion as their king. He was neither wrathful, cruel, nor tyrannical, but just and gentle as a king could be. During his reign he made a royal proclamation for a general assembly of all the birds and beasts, and drew up conditions for a universal league, in which the Wolf and the Lamb, the Panther and the Kid, the Tiger and the Stag, the Dog and the Hare, should live together in perfect peace and amity. The Hare said, “Oh, how I have longed to see this day, in which the weak shall take their place with impunity by the side of the strong.” And after the Hare said this, he ran for his life.

So I guess some things never change.

Also, this graphic representation of all of the on-screen zombie slayings in The Walking Dead since the very first episode by someone with way too much time on his hands was provided by a moron in an earlier thread, but I forget who, so thank you, whoever you are.

[Update]: It was moron commenter RWC who first posted a link to the WD statistics graphs.

In a secret government agreement granted without approval or debate from lawmakers, the U.S. attorney general recently gave the National Counterterrorism Center sweeping new powers to store dossiers on U.S. citizens, even if they are not suspected of a crime, according to a news report.

Earlier this year, Attorney General Eric Holder granted the center the ability to copy entire government databases holding information on flight records, casino-employee lists, the names of Americans hosting foreign-exchange students and other data, and to store it for up to five years, even without suspicion that someone in the database has committed a crime, according to the Wall Street Journal, which broke the story.

FWIW, the original argument (under Eugenics of course) was how great the idea all the free market was (because they thought it would get rid of the unworthy.)
Vonnegut may have turned that on it's head and used it as a capitalism attack.
But both were fundamentally flawed of course, the former doesn't take into account any individual charity, the value of life etc. The latter is a horrible straw man against capitalism (but a strawman at least some what rooted in what people were actually saying.)
They're really two sides of the same coin.

Libs like to extol the virtures of Nature...and say that we shouldn't interfere in the natural world of Mother Gaia.

But what is 'natural' about an abortion?
Seems to me like that is a major interference into Mother Gaia's domain.

That's a very good point. Abortion is profoundly artificial.

(But Leftists are mostly into Nature because they're stupid, which is also (part of the reason) why they have trouble being consistent.)

Yes. WBC is a useful idiot organization for the left, in that they are the enemy of the enemy. Currently, networkcamerasand announcers ignore fans that run onto the field at baseball and football games. This is done to discourage those attention-seekers who might otherwise choose that route to some achieve some media time.

Perhaps we adopt a similar tactic within the news media and simply not release the names of these mass murders until much later, like in court?
That might negate the actions of some copy-cat type monster.
Wouldwitholding the nameviolate the public's right to know, and would the media ever agree to restrain themselves?

Of course, but you have to get by the other half-to-2/3 of the Federal Government that is flatly or arguably unconstitutional before you can get to that.

If you can find a State constitution that has applicable representation and equal protection language, that might be a good place to start.

It's one of those things that lawyers love because they get to do something *obviously* wrong and unfair because the language of the law is vague or vaguely applicable.

235 School prayer... reminds me of a smoking story:
Two young monks were friends from before the monastery, and they decided to move on to a new one where they heard the practice was really good.
They were having a cigaret one day when one said, "Hey, we should ask the Abbott if smoking's OK." "Hey, yeah, cool! I'll do it.," the other one said. So, he finished his butt and went to the Abbott. "My friend and I really like it here, and we're wondering if it would be OK if we smoked while we prayed." Abbott: "No, absolutely not! Prayer is only for prayer. You should never bring anything else into it."
Crestfallen the monk went back to his friend and told him what had transpired. "Wait a sec', what exactly did he say?" Upon hearing his friend's question and the Abbott's answer, the first monk said, "Let me try."
He went to the Abbott and said, "My friend and I are wondering if it would be OK to pray while we smoked." "Absolutely!" the Abbott said. "Whatever you are doing, you should also be praying."

Posted by: toby928© for TB at December 15, 2012 07:06 PM (QupBk)

There are people who claim they are great and love them.

I personally have seen more broken ones than whole ones, but that's just an anecdote.

It does not help that they are uglier than sin.

Unfortunately most information available about things in the gun industry are through rumors and anecdotes, there's no one who consistently does stress testing or long-term reviews or collects warranty information or anything like that.

It's a "word of mouth" industry, which kind of sucks.

The "word of mouth" seems to be that early quality control issues cemented their bad reputation even though quality improved later. They are ugly and the metal quality is not great but is "good enough." The ergonomics are poor - they are not comfortable to use (I found the ones I handled clumsy, do not point well (seat in the hand at an odd angle), rough or badly angled panels against hand, poor controls).

If you have a place that rents them you can ask them about how they hold up, and test the comfort for yourself.

Me, I would just spend a little more for something that has a better reputation, and.or something that I *can* find long-term or destruction test information on (Glock, Sig, etc).

I have a Hi-Point 9mm and .40 SW. total for both guns $400.00.

A Sig Sauer 226 9mm will run you $1,000.00

Okay, if you paid a grand for a P226, you got ripped off. If you paid $1600 for an AR (a basic one), you got ripped even more.

Frankly, a police trade-in Glock is probably as good or better than a Sig and may be as low as $400+tax/fee. But new is only $500-550. I paid $550 for a new G21 last year.

A basic quality AR (like the SandW MP15 I keep talking about) is around $700-800 or a little more. I've seen them on sale here in CA (obviously special CA versions) for that price.

So you pretty much doubled the "expensive gun" prices. Everything doesn't have to be a Kimber or a Noveske, the only car choices are not Yugo and Mercedes.

Posted by: rickl at December 15, 2012 07:30 PM (sdi6R)

First of all, the term AR-15 refers toeither specific guns so designated or to the general class of "clone" guns based on the same receiver design.

But if you want to be specific, there are dozens of names or designations for something like that. They're all still AR-15s, the "M4 equivalent" would just be a carbine and not a rifle. 14.5 (with a long flash hider or muzzle brake for legality) or 16" barrel, usually with a collapsible stock.

They're really just all AR-pattern guns. The old-old-old designation for a short AR is the CAR-15, a common slang term is an "M4gery," as in a copy of an M4.

325 A basic quality AR (like the SandW MP15 I keep

sale here in CA (obviously special CA versions) for that price.

So you pretty much doubled the "expensive gun" prices. Everything

Yugo and Mercedes.

The MP Sport is not only the cheapest, it sneaks in with some very high-quality features that you pay extra for, e.g. the R5 rifling and melonite instead of chrome. I wish the Sport was around back when I bought my AR - I'd have saved some money. Got a great deal on a RRA middy, but still...

With Taurus you can kind of either win or lose. Bushmaster, DPMS and Olympic are the same, it's like they have "Monday morning and Friday afternoon guns" that are crap and others that are good.

So there's risk. Not that "top tier" people never have bad days, but Colt or Sig or Glock or LMT don't have bad days *every month*.

I have two Tauri that are good, but I wouldn't say to someone they should just buy one, never test it, and then depend on it later. I would with a new Sig or Glock (generally speaking).

But you should practice with your guns anyway, even if you trust them.

Yes, it's generally called OTM (open-tipped match). It's purpose is not at all the same as hollowpoint pistol ammo, which is intended to expand quickly. .223 OTM vs. standard FMJ moves the center of gravity back more to the rear of the bullet, which allows for greater stability at longer ranges. It does nothing for lethality; it's for precision at longer ranges.

The better system would be to pick off the young rabbits, and preferably in infancy or even before they are born. Tell the aging rabbits that they can maintain their own comfort better if there's no competition for carrots and they'll go for it.

Then when the population pyramid of the rabbits is shifted to old age, tell the old rabbits, "we must have youngsters to dig up your carrots for you!" Then let in a horde of young wolves.

The old rabbits, feeble with age and without enough young rabbits to help them, will make meals for the wolves, every last one.

So the Hares say they believe, oh yes they believe all the way. And then they run as far from the diversity as they can afford.

There's "gun crime".

And "knife crime".

Islam has pioneered a solution to "hand crime".

The big one is "thought crime". Liberals want a zero tolerance policy on that.

Interestingly enough, progressives will use the exceptions to the rules of the first three to accomplish the last.

(I can't bring myself to call them liberals anymore. I'm a fucking liberal. They're progressives. I just don't care anymore if they want to play the "tuck your peepee, grow out your hair, and use the ladies' restroom" confidence game, but I won't play the "which of the three labels is hiding my ideology" confidence game anymore.)

394 >>>They had another child to try and replace him and then promptly divorced.

I told my wife just an hour ago, that some couples who lost children here will one day divorce because they simply won't be able to handle the grief. Families will be broken. God bless them.

My wife and I have been together 23 years together, but I don't know if we could survive this kind of catacllsim.

399 The Scorpion and the Frog is a fable about a scorpion asking a frog
to carry him across a river.

The frog is afraid of being stung during
the trip, but the scorpion argues that if it stung the frog, the frog
would sink and the scorpion would drown.

The frog agrees and begins
carrying the scorpion, but midway across the river the scorpion does
indeed sting the frog, dooming them both.

When asked why, the scorpion
explains that this is simply its nature.

The fable is used to illustrate
the view that the behaviour of some creatures, or of some people, is
irrepressible, no matter how they are treated and no matter what the
consequences.

400 218 How did Vonnegut write "Harrison Beregeron" and then turn into a leftie ding-bat?
Posted by: Darth Randall at December 15, 2012 07:00 PM (mV8sg)

Easy. He was always a leftist. When he wrote "Harrison Bergeron" he thought he was engaging in a reductio-ad-absurdum parody -- taking the government paranoia of the Birchers, Objectivists, et al. to their logical conclusion... and then revealing Harrison, the man who will not be cowed, the man who would rather die than submit, as an individualist Übermensch who gains bullshit supernatural powers from the sheer force of his moral rightness.

Read it again from the perspective of "what would a Leftist writer be trying to say by writing this story?" and his point becomes clear. It's all just a gigantic pisstake against the right's plethora of Ayn Rand types.
