College Bowl Games

Starts today. If you're interested there's a pickem group, details here.

Two of the lesser known bowls start us off today:

The New Mexico Bowl (1pm): Nevada and Arizona playing in New Mexico.

The Idaho Potato Bowl (4:30pm): Toledo and Utah State. Playing in Idaho.

If you decide to do the picks thing, remember if you don't think too good, don't think too long.

If you compute the circumference of the observable universe using pi to 32 decimal places, and you're off by one in the last digit, you get an error of about .0001 meter.

If you do it with pi off by one in the 100th place, you get an error of about a half a planck length, if there is such a thing.

From the Daily Mail, a UK paper that does the USA better. The NY Slime and everyone else is implying that the M-4 was used in the killings. Appears that is total bull shit. The M-4 was found in the trunk of his car, obviously not used in the killings.

From the mail:

Three guns were found at the scene - a
Glock and a Sig Sauer, both pistols - and a .223-caliber rifle. The
rifle was recovered from the back of a car at the school.
The two
pistols were recovered from inside the school.

115 @91 Sweet 'n' Sour Recipe
Works for pork, poultry, dog, cat, and "Chicago Chicken"
Chunk meat and debone if necessary. Throw in wok with peanut oil, garlic, and ginger to taste. Brown. Add large dice of green pepper to taste. Saute briefly.
Add Karo syrup, rice vinegar, and Nabisco bite-size Shredded Wheat.
Serve with red pepper flakes to taste.
Quick, easy, delicious! (Check local laws: your cat, dog, or "Chicago Chicken" may be deemed illegal foodstuffs by a compassionate government.)

195 @174 "Clip" may specifically refer to "stripper clip" a thin strip of sheet metal formed to hold cartridges by their base so they can be "stripped" into a rifles interior box magazine, or into a detachable magazine.
A "magazine" holds cartridges to be fired, and may be internal/intrinsic or external and detachable.
I don't know of stripper clips for pistols, but with minor modifications, revolvers can be reloaded with "moon clips" (similar to stripper clips in conception, but of a different shape).

204 Sounds like the media is trying to blame the mother for owning guns. That owning guns and shooting them at a range is something unfeminine, and indication of something wrong with her.

It's an effective tactic. My mother wouldn't allow guns in the house. She was a great woman. But she was terrified of guns.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at December 15, 2012 04:03 PM (ZPrif)

205 You use a clip to load a magazine. Think of it. A magazine holds the rounds in the function of firing the weapon ( all the way up to naval guns ) A clip facilitates ( not in naval guns larger than a 40mm or something ) the loading of rounds into a magazine, either a removable magazine like modern AR's use, or fixed magazines like the M1 Garand have.

208 Dude. The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is one of the most famous things on planet Earth. It says so right in the name.

In years when neither is in a BCS game, it pits the MAC champion versus the WAC champion. They play the game on Idaho State's improbable blue field.

As the MAC improves and the Big East and ACC implode, they are going to have to re-jigger the BCS so the competitors in this game will probably change in the next few years.

209 Lanza short circuited any response because of the
way things were setup. The security design funneled the shooter right
into the main admin office. He shot the principle, the psychologist, and
others in that office. Wiped out the whole command staff.

If we are to believe anything the media reports, that seems to have been what happened.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 15, 2012 04:01 PM (hWrM7)

Yep. He broke in a window or some such, instead.
The principle, school counselor, and vice went together to see what was happening -- only one got out alive. I think it was the vice principle, or whoever that secondary in command person is.
The forethought of the principal to install this level of security is commendable, though. But, if someone wants in, they will get in.

yeah yeah yeah, Google up AR-15 clips. You get magazines for sale. Like I said, the magazines have springs that replaced the old clip push down on the M-1, so that is why a lot of people call them clips.

You push the sheet metal clip of eight .30-'06 cartridges into the magazine of the rifle, risk "Garand thumb" when you close the bolt, and hope the enemy isn't close enough to hear the chime of the clip as it ejects following the final case. (This was a controversial feature of "the greatest battle implement designed by Man": Patton, and was, I believe, intentionally included in the sound-track of Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers" (2006).)

So it's likely more that his brain went crazy in high school and he was probably freaking out the other kids. School probably was trying to arrange ways of accommodating him without scaring the normal kids, mom was unhappy and pulled him out. Not that surprising that the mother just couldn't/wouldn't see that her son was turning into a monster.

It's a viable offense at every level, which you can't say about many systems. And it's very exciting to watch, especially when it's run by a QB who can run, throw, and make good decisions.

Since these kinds of QBs are becoming more common, expect to see the Pistol more and more in the coming years.

And when you do, remember Nevada and their pioneering quarterback, Colin Kaepernick.

They can do both. Why choose? Just got finished watching "Road to Perdition" --a 30's era Tom Hanks revenge flick with lots and lots of splodey heads and the final message is how great it is that the kid didn't choose the way of the gun. Because guns are so yucky.

They can have their cake and eat it too. That's the advantage of controlling the message.

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER, SYNDICATED COLUMNIST: The first thing I think we
have to say is in looking at this or analyzing this requires a huge
amount of humility. The true fact is we do not know and often even after
these events are analyzed and thought through we really don't know.
This is the problem of evil, and it's been struggled with forever.

What we know about the current shooting is that people are divided in
three camps, three elements. You have the psychology of the shooter,
you have the weapon, and you've got the cultural environment. People
will choose whichever cause they want to blame. They will say it was the
guns that were available. Laws ought to be tightened, although the
Brady campaign says Connecticut has the fourth strictest laws in the
country. Then you have the environment. People on the right tend to say
that our culture desensitizes young people in movies and video games to
kill in way older generation find disturbing.

I tend to gravitate toward the psychology of the killer. When you
think about the details of the crime, he began by shooting his mother in
the face. Taking her weapon and then destroying everything precious to
her, her colleagues and her children, and then killing himself. That I
think is where I would start, although I think all the issues have to be
discussed.

My daughter is eight. While her school isn't kooky serious, the company dancers travel and compete like you see on Dance Moms all over the world. So all the girls are at least 14.

They also have sent a couple of girls up to become Patriots cheerleaders, so there's a pipeline working there.

They may 'ban guns'...but there is no way that they could keep guns out of the hands of someone who wanted one.

Drugs are 'banned', but there is a steady stream of them into the country.

We have thousands of miles of poorly guarded shorelines and borders.
Guns would be added to the list of other things that come into the country, even though they are illegal to be here.
