Okay, I recently heard something that answered a longstanding question of mine and I wanted to share it.
Why do Europeans CARE so much about whether or not America is a socialist country or not?? Why can't they just let us be capitalist and they be socialist?
And the answer is, it's like when school kids take up smoking. They KNOW it's bad for them, and they KNOW they shouldn't be doing it. But instead of stopping, they pressure everyone around them to start so they won't be confronted with the mistake they are making.
America is the last kid on the playground, the one that won't give in to the peer pressure, the one that won't start smoking just because everyone else is. Because we know it's bad for us, no matter what our European "friends" and "betters" say.

Gun control ? Seems the mother bought the guns, besides when you have
an ATF and DOJ that illegally allows guns to flow to Mexico to kill

We now have such a myriad of laws that it inspired a book, “Three
Felonies a Day”. The author claims that the average American commits,
on average, 3 felonies a day.
But when out POTUS decides to ignore laws, like our immigration laws,
why can’t everybody else just ignore a few .. and maybe go shoot up a
school or church. Seems “fair” to me.
I propose a sunset of 12 years on all laws, when they will have to be
reauthorized. This should keep Congress so busy that they won’t have
time to do much spending.

I really don't know. They "have this thing and it's fucking golden." But I think Lynch, Meehan or Capuano all have a good chance of beating Brown. Given that there are several good choices for the demoncraps, Devil may just let it play out and not upset the apple cart.
On the other hand, they can't afford to lose another senate seat heading into 2014, so Obama may just tell Mass to change the law again and appoint someone.
I really don't know; but Bob Avakian seems to think Brown will run again. He was on Brown's finance committee in the last cycle. Brown wouldn't be putting his team back in place if it was a done deal already.

There should be a delineation between divorced parents and a father's participation in his children's lives. It's not so much the act of divorce, but whether or not a father is a strong presence, that really fosters a child's mental well-being. Imo, of course. My parents divorced when I was 6. However, my dad was as much in our lives as any father. He lived 2 streets away, we spent every weekend and one weekday with him 24/7/365. We also spent our entire summers with him. He took us on trips, to the movies, Icecapades, tossed ball in the backyard...all sorts of things. My parents' divorce, while not ideal, didn't take the father figure out of my life. That's an important distinction.

My mom and her brother had to do it with their younger brother when he nearly killed my grandfather in a schizophrenic rage.
In the end, the younger brother killed himself in the institution. Horrible, and soul crushing for my grandparents, but it could have been so much worse if he were out in the general public.

I used to run a surface grinder (20 years ago), and we had tolerances of (I think +/- .003) or was it +.003 -.000, I think that was it. Anyway, the difference in thousanths once I approached the size was the difference between putting a red crayon mark on the part, and grinding down till it was a light red mark. Long story short, it was small. Over one more decimal and its ridiculous, although I did have to do that ONCE.

I'm not sure about that in this case. The rooms where the shooting occurred appear to have been adjacent to each other.
BTW, I read that they found several other guns in the school. No word yet on if they were brought in by the shooter or guns that teachers/staff had themselves.

While I can understand trying to reassure them, in my experience working with children I have learned that even very young ones (4, 5, 6 yrs) know when adults are B.S.'ing them. A lot of times a hard truth (i.e. "the world is an uncertain place and there are bad things that can happen") is kinder than a false reassurance.
Thoughts? Have any of you broached this with your children or grandchildren, and if so what sort of tack did you take?

Y-Not, she is Insulin Resistant Reactive Hypoglycemic. Her body isn't processing carbs correctly, so it dumps a massive amount of insulin, causing extremely dangerous low blood sugars. I have had several conversations with my grandchildren about things like this.
I usually talk about how rare such instances are, and then I give them practical advice, such as hiding under a desk, running away quickly if possible, fighting and screaming if grabbed, etc. (Not all at once, but comments pertinent to the item under discussion.)
Kids don't like to feel powerless.

Yeah, I got what you were saying. Just trying to clarify what she really said. She was explaining Familicide (family annihilators) and how they are very different than other types of murderers.
I'm a huge gamer. (I was on Alpha {Friends & Family}, then beta, then played the released version for World of Warcraft for many years.) I worked in the game industry for over a decade developing games. And, I've always hated those that blame the games, in general.
But, we also did struggle with keeping the experience healthy. Even we knew how destructive it could be to a young boys mind -- and how the games can affect a family. Hence, specifically in WoW, they tried to make it as family friendly as possible. The graphics are very stylized (not as realistic). The quests are fun. The community is monitored and enhanced with events, etc.
Now, many games have pop-ups after so much time, telling you to take a break.
The fact that kids (mostly in Asia) are dropping dead in front of their computers does not go unnoticed.
Games were meant (think early Everquest) to keep people online. And, so competitive, it took hours to achieve much of anything and to beat your competition. So, there was an unhealthy element built-in to the games. Those of us in the industry knew what we were doing, and some of us tried to alleviate these addictive properties.
I know first hand the addiction of gaming. And, have had to wean myself off of many games in the past. Now, I look for games that are not so time intensive; ones I can leave whenever I want.
Traditionally, I was in high end guilds competing in raids for the honor of first, either on the server I was playing on, or in the world.
Like chocolate, football, alcohol, games -- too much of a good thing...

I have a 15 and 18 year old, my 15 year old asked me for a hug this morning and hugged me so tight and said there are lots of people who can't hug their kids/moms today and she started to cry.
She internalizes these things much like I do.
She's having friends over today and probably making some cookies, gonna try to do something happy to get her mind off of it a little bit.

I see this response instintively in young children. Even when facing a major medical problem (or after having had a major surgery), when asked what they want to be when they grow up many will say, "I want to be a doctor." It is not an exact parallel to yesterday's events, since the 'villain' in my setting is a disease rather than a person. But your point is well taken. On a gut level even very young children understand the dichotomy of good and evil.

I used to be able to look at a steel coil of rod from a tow motor and guess the size in thousandths about 90% of the time. Back in the days of 20/13 vision and a lot of experience. I could probably do it in 1/4 in increments now. I kind of miss those days.

Showing a weapon pointed in the air or to the ground is not an assault. I also state clearly that my gun is armed and I consider your presence a threat.
You have given them fair warning. That is all you are required to do before you kill them in most states. In some, it is more than you need to do.
I never show a gun where the other person might have an opportunity to take it away from me.

I don't pretend to be knowledgeable on autism (thank God I have not HAD to learn), but that google produced pages of material including heartbreaking forums from parents (often single) of Aspie kids, who were discussing rage and meltdowns. One woman, single parent, talked of the escalation of the meltdowns with puberty onset in her son, and her fears that he was growing bigger than she is.
Most detailed, with the younger kids whose parents were looking for strategies as the kids get bigger, how sorry and sad the kids were after they had worked themselves through their rage meltdown.
My SIL is brain injured, and while she is not violent or self-injurious, she does have meltdowns which, like the ones I saw discussed in the reading material, are frustration-based: if we are going to a restaurant she loves, and when we arrive there is a delay, if she is really hungry she can get into meltdown mode, with escalating rocking, handwaving, grunting, crying, and eventually screaming. She can't help it, and once she gets into the cycle neither can she stop herself.
I'm wondering, after also reading for the last few years about kids who get into sometimes fatal interactions with law enforcement, and turn out to be autistic--and the subsequent calls for all law enforcement to be educated in recognizing and coping with varieties of autism behaviors as the kids of the 'epidemic' grow up--if the boy DOES turn out to have something on the autism spectrum along with mental or emotional health/illness issues, whether we are going to see the lid blow off of a lot of autism activism.
I don't put quotes around 'epidemic' to discount, denigrate, etc--I do it because the last word is still out on so many things, and I confess to ignorance on a complex subject. Just noting that violence and Aspergers is apparently NOT exclusive.

Or let's back up and say, if it is a sport, why can we not have the weapon shoot non lethal projectiles? So instead of bullets, it shoots a dye packet or something that bursts on impact. [Paintball markers for everyone! Asshat!!]This would allow you to see how well you shoot without the weapon having the capability of mowing down a classroom of children. We have some of the brightest weapon designers in the world, surely they could design something like this.
I honestly don't know what the right answer is. I don't like the idea of denying someone the ability to enjoy their chosen sport. I also think the whole violent culture has gotten out of control. It will take more than just regulations."

If you visited a therapist 20 years ago to try and quit smoking, do you have a "mental condition"? If you have dyslexia, do you have a"menatl condition"? At some point there was a little voice telling me that the toaster breaking was not a good reason to burn down the entire block. Close though. Scared the bejeezus out of me when it had worn off. I am just thinking his condition didn't just show up. The NY Daily News story says all the neighbors knew the kid was a nut in school. The mom was staying home to look after him. Seems to me he should have been institutionalized.

Canada is one of the few countries that has an agreement with the US about not double taxing expatriots.
If you make up to $90K or so, it can be excluded on tax forms.
The hitch is, if you have assets sitting in accounts in Canada, they want to know, and, I believe, can tax you accordingly.

I was introduced to K-Pop by 17 year old son. We were traveling to China and had a very long lay over in Korea. He had several hundred dollars for spending. He went off on his own and I of course I reminded him not to spend all his money. Well let's just all those pretty Korean shop girls saw him coming. He didn't have a nickle left when they were done with him. He did have quite the collection of K-pop CDs and a Hello Kitty neck pillow.

Long Island is incredibly segregated. It is amazing how liberal whites don't want their kids going to school with ANY black kids. School districts have been formed here just avoid integration. There is street here that you can look down and see where the black town ends and white town begins.

He was a sculptor. His son was career army & by all appearances was a stand up guy who was on his third tour in Iraq. He had returned from having surgery stateside and was given narcotics for his pain. They believe that he accidentally OD'd in his sleep. Dad, of course, blamed it on Booooosh!
