Flashback: Tough Gun Control Laws Failed To Prevent German School Slaughter of 2009

One failed law is just the predicate for the next one.

WINNENDEN, Germany — A teenage gunman killed 15 people, most of them female, on Wednesday in a rampage that began at a school near Stuttgart in southern Germany and ended in a nearby town, where he then killed himself after the police wounded him.

The attack left Germany, which tightened tough gun controls after a similar attack at a school seven years ago, struggling to understand the carnage that had again befallen it, a country with relatively little violent crime. In 2002, a gunman killed 16 people before killing himself at a school in Erfurt, in eastern Germany.

They had tough gun laws; they had a school shooting. They tightened those tough gun laws; they had another school shooting.

To state the obvious: A man intent on mass murder is not deterred by misdemeanor level possession/purchase laws. He's bound for prison or death by cop; he is not sweating the lesser laws he may break en route to a massive slaughter of children.

Of course he dressed in black, too. That's part of the fantasy.

They said the attacker, clad in black, opened fire in three classrooms at the school, killing nine students — eight girls and a boy — and three teachers, all women. Seven wounded students were hospitalized.

Strict gun laws, loose gun laws: An intensely motivated lunatic is going to find a way to make his fantasy real.

Thank you for saying sane things that I am thinking. Was in my bank today and one of the tellers was saying something along the lines of "we need to ban guns, no one should have guns" I was relieved when two other tellers basically told her off "even if guns were banned, bad people would still get them."

Why, why, why is that argument difficult for thinking people to understand? It frustrates me to no end to hear people say "outlaw guns" like that would somehow solve all the horrific violence in the U.S. in one sweeping motion.

Bigger signs at all schools, for the childern we need to do this.

Also, new signs in Spanish, this will help, and braille too.

81 I went out and pulled some data from the 2011 CDC National Vital Statistics Report. Its long but pleas take the time to read it.

Deaths in the U.S . 2011
~Source - Data for 2011. National Vital Statistics DHHS, CDC

Total deaths 2,512,873 - 99.99995% not caused by firearms!

Top 15 causes of deaths

All 15 except number 5 are from diseases. 23,900,096 deaths are from health related causes, Heart disease, cancer, etc… Thats 95.1% of all deaths.

The 5th leading cause of death is accidents which account for 122,777 deaths

Top 5 accidents

Motor vehicle accidents - 34,677 deaths - 28.2% of accidental deaths are caused by motor vehicles. Why is there no outcry to ban motor vehicles? Motor vehicles accidentally killed 33,826 more people than firearms did in 2011

Accidental poisoning - 33,554 deaths - 27.3% of accidental deaths are caused by accidental poisoning. Why is there no outcry to ban poisons and household chemicals?? Accidental poisoning accidentally killed 32,703 more people than firearms did in 2011

Falls - 26,631 deaths - 21.69% of accidental deaths are caused by falls. Why is there no outcry to ban high places and gravity?? Falls accidentally killed 25,780 more people than firearms did in 2011

Other Unspecified Non-transportation - 18,289 14.9%

Drowning - 3, 555 deaths - 2.9% of accidental deaths are caused by drowning. Why is there no outcry to ban people from pools, lakes, and oceans ?? Drowning accidentally killed 2,704 more people than firearms did in 2011

Coming in at number 10 - Accidental discharge of firearms - 851 - 0.69% of accidental deaths.

Non Accidental Deaths - Non Disease

Unlike Accidents the following deaths are senseless deaths caused by the irresponsible, sick, troubled or murderous felons.

Drug induced deaths - 40, 239 preventable deaths by just not abusing drugs. While there is not much outcry about drugs anymore, state governments are making it easier for people to use drugs by passing laws making them legal.

Suicide - 38,258 deaths

Alcohol induced deaths - 26,256, preventable deaths by just not abusing alcohol. Where is the outcry to ban alcohol? Alcohol kills twice as many people each year in the U.S. than firearms do!

Homicide - 15, 953 deaths. Which is 0.63% of the total deaths in the us each year. Theses deaths are caused by sick murderous people with the intent to kill others. That intent will manifest itself in many forms and be carried out in numerous ways with numerous weapons. If someone is intent to kill they are going to find a way to do it. If they want to to kill a group of people and don't have access to a gun there are many ways to get the job done. Cars, bombs, car bombs, etc... just ask Timothy McVeigh.

90 Right now there is the debate in my head between America where I get to keep all my guns but the taxes are frightful vs some other countries were I don't get to have as many guns but the taxes are very reasonable. If Boehner folds like he always does the debate is OVER.

92 @74 -

Yes, you can credit SCOAMT for signing legislation that allowed national parks carry, but you would be stupid to extend that act into a mindset that supports the second amendment. National parks carry was an amendment to the credit card bill that was destined to be signed anyway.

The way legislation is written and logrolled, you virtually cannot make a sound argument that anyone supported anything or was against anything on the basis of their vote alone, because while they could be for one component of a piece of legislation, there may be many others that they would not vote for, if it was a standalone bill.

There's your reality.

Good point on an armed teacher or administrator mitigating this. Too I feel we should be screaming about the failure of gun-free zone schools. People intnent on harming masses of victims ALWAYS go where they like the odds of no interference. Gun-free school zones have done NOTHING to prevent school shootings and I argue haveled to more ofthe incidents greatly.

97 Here's a member of the Kos Juicebox and Scrappy Do Safety Patrol walking by now. Let's get it's comment:

"Guns in general are designed for one reason: to kill, kill, kill. Some totally legal machine guns you can't even use the excuse of "But I love to hunt!" for, because they were made specifically to murder people. By driving bullets into their body through hundreds of automatic shots fired at high velocity."

>>>>>

The best part of Left Wing Assholes talking gun control is that they display their utter ignorance of firearms. They're supposed to care about the issue, but can't be bothered to learn the minimum necessary to have an informed idea of what they're looking to ban. In reality, they're just about capturing our flag - the guns are a totem of our tribe to them, which is why it doesn't matter how ineffective each "gun control" measure is in practice.

100 Coulter had a good point on Hannity's radio show today, about armed response to an active shooter. Basically, when seconds matter, LE is just minutes away. Someone on the scene will keep the shooter's head down, even if he doesn't get nailed by the armed citizen. I was driving at the time I heard this, and missed the names of the academics who did the exhaustive study proving the negative correlation between carrying citizens and shooting sprees, but one was John Lott.

and legislation was very strict even before the '02 shooting. license required for any firearm, plus the need for regular competition. and regular visits from the police too, to check up on proper storage. plus dozens of other regulations.

wait for it, someone's going to argue that that kind of regulation is constitutional, and off you go.

I suppose it would be hard to know if stricter guns laws deter some from getting a gun in the first place. Since I do not own a gun, I have no idea how hard it is to buy one and register it.

A couple police officers/law enforcement officers I saw/heard being interviewed today repeated the same idea of psychological testing being done, as is done to them, in order to carry a gun.

But, this would have done nothing in this particular case. It was the mother's guns that he got into. Were they NOT locked in a gun box or cabinet? They found FOUR guns, last I heard.

The Industrial Revolution was also a transformation, but it wasn’t a guided transformation from a centralized policy perspective. This is a centralized transformation that is taking place because governments have decided that they need to listen to science.

So may we please see this “science” on the basis of which our existing energy infrastructure is to be ripped out in favor of non-existent “green” energy? The only reason for secrecy in the first place is to enhance the UN’s political control over a scientific story line that is aimed explicitly at policy makers. In reality, they're just about capturing our flag - the guns are a totem of our tribe to them, which is why it doesn't matter how ineffective each "gun control" measure is in practice.

Posted by: Alec Leamas at December 14, 2012 09:19 PM (Nfpnr)

well, except the thing is they do not need any knowledge of firearms because all they really care about is removing them form your custody. irrational rational who cares you having any is the problem.

When I had Active Shooter training at the police department several years ago, one of the common denominators of these mass shootings is that they occur in quiet, sleepy neighborhoods "were that kind of thing can't happen." This results in the police department not having any mental preparation for the possibility. Thus their reaction is hampered.

garbage disposals were based banned because there were some stories of the "superbowl wife beating variety" running around saying people were mutiliating themselves by shoving their hands down the disposals while they were running or having them switched on while their hands were in them.

someone did some research a year or so ago - no one ever reported any injuries related to garbage disposals in new york before they were banned.

If your children aren't very tall yet, get a tallboy dresser and keep the guns on top of that, and DO NOT tell them they are there.

Also, teach your children gun safety, or take them to a local gun range or NRA or hunter's class where they will teach them gun safety, from an intimidating (like taller than them) person who seems in charge. and let them shoot a little, with appropriate size firearms. Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you you would cry,

So just look at them and sigh, and know they love you.

And so please help, them with your years, they seek the truth before they can die.

Teach, your parents well, their children's hell, will slowly go by.

Guy Mohawk,

I like your idea, but only if they have had gun safety training at least. I received training for free, in northern Minnesota when I was about 12, had already received training from family, but needed a certificate to purchase my first ammo. I think at least a minimum of training, even if it is just grandpa or parents saying they trained you.

Of course, I should not opine on anyone owning a firearm at all. Hubby and I have a very nice collection at hand as I speak, as well as an awesome gun safe, and a lot of family that also owns as many firearms as we have chosen to own.

So I will not try to put an opinion on anyone else owning what they want.

I would just encourage anyone purchasing their "first" to acquire safety training.

According to the law enforcement official, the Glock and Sig Sauer handguns were found inside the school with the deceased gunman. The Bushmaster was found in a car outside the school. The official did not know if the car was registered to the gunman, to his mother or to someone else.

When I was in law school, a classmate was caught in the middle of the armed robbery of an all-night diner. The would-be robber pointed the gun at the cashier, at my classmate, waved it wildly around the joint at the other terrified patrons, and fired a shot at the cashier when he decided she was moving too slowly for his tastes. A patron in the corner eventually stood up and plugged the guy. Good riddance. If someone at the school had been carrying (like that case in Kentucky a few years ago?? or was it a grad school in NC?), we would be totally focused on really nasty jokes about the Iowa Pork Queen right now.
I still want a good explanation of how this douchebag loser made it past the front door. In my kids school, you ain't getting in until you're buzzed in. And you can't buzz yourself in; the door only unlocks for a second or two.

I think parents should go to jail if their kids, no matter how old, commit a violent crime. Might keep some real sets of eyes on these losers.

the other coyote,

I understand wanting the parents to be in charge, but it isn't that easy, once a person has issues beyond the age of consent.

My sister had mental health issues. Not like she ever got to the point of shooting up people, but she was in her early forties when the family got a say in addressing those issues.

When she was in the last stage of breast cancer, and my mom talked to the doctor about her paranoid issues. Then the doctor listened and gave her drugs along with all the others that go with that condition.

We could finally talk to her like she was "normal" and it wasn't a problem.

I guess it would depend on the person, but I don't know that blaming the parents would work for all of these losers that kill other people.

If they are adults, it is very VERY hard to get any kind of mental health help for them

Posted by: alamogordo at December 14, 2012 11:52 PM (HUTO5)

270 Hypothesis: Adam Lanza had a mental illness or illnesses which caused him to feel hopelessly inferior to "normal" people. He believed, with or without justification, that his mother treasured her kindergarten students more than her son. It got to the point that he could not bear that sense of humiliation any longer. Angry at his mother, he killed her, then went to the school and killed her students so they would not have the blissful futures he so envied.

Something like this will emerge as the explanation for Adam's behavior.

Alamagordo,

I vote for changing the laws to where parents are responsible. In the middle ages, if you screwed up, the king killed your whole family. Not exactly compatable with modern American ideals, but it's a nice way to preserve order.

I like your choice of canine security. I used a guy as outside counsel in some litigation in California who had an Akita that broke an intruder's small lower leg bone (tibia?). The intruder actually sued him over the dog bite. Even in CA, the burglar lost.

I've got a mini Aussie who is an insane barker and a fear biter who is probably the tough gal in my house. The decent sized dogs would be asking for tummy rubs from strangers.

OK the other coyote.

I love me both my dogs., and yes, the little heeler is one I trust for taking the first stance, but the Big Boy (Akita-at least part) will be the biter big time, or at least the Intimidator until the short heeler can reach their throat.

Posted by: alamogordo at December 15, 2012 12:13 AM (HUTO5)

273
the other coyote,

However, I do have a problem after a certain age, about making the parents responsible for their children's behavior. My sister did not get her problems from her upbringing. There are 5 other children in the family. Some (one brother has a felon conviction, but never shot anyone) had problems, but there is a point, I believe, that people are people and there is nothing can be done.

It is not like my parents did not ask for help with my sister, but she did not have any criminal issues, and the "mental health professionals" basically tell you nothing can be done to assist your family member unless there has been a crime or a direct threat to the family or others.

I believe that the laws MUST be changed, where if the family knows there is a problem it can be addressed, including committing people to a mental health hospital.

But the law does not allow that just now.

So I don't know what can be done, for people that the family KNOWS have problems.

278 122: The assumption is being made that Germany proves that tightening gun laws doesn't prevent massacres. One massacre is not dispositive by any stretch. All it proves is that massacres still MAY happen even with tightening, that there's not a foolproof solution ... and there won't be unless guns suddenly become biodegradable.

What about the case of England? In 96 a lunatic murdered 16 toddlers. Private ownership of handguns was outlawed the following year. NO school massacres since.

If you think Germany proves one thing, you certainly have to accept that England proves the reverse. But your standard of proof from the beginning is apparently fallacious.

281 No, Adorno, we don't have to accept any such thing. The UK is an incredibly violent society. Eurostat shows that they're even more violent than South Africa. The United States has far more guns, yet sees far less violence per capita than the UK. If you cared at all to look, the studies are out there documenting an inverse relationship between small-arms ownership and violent crime.

More significantly, the rationale for gun ownership is immediately apparent to people who are in harm's way, not wanking away at their computers about some politicized abstraction. Why the fuck do you think the South Sudanese were so desperate to obtain weapons? You're not getting our guns. The effort to obtain them would itself result in so much immediate violence that it would destabilize our entire society. Civil War type shit. You're not getting our guns. We're not giving them up. Either start killing us now, or shut the fuck up. You're not getting our guns.

287 "But, this would have done nothing in this particular case. It was the
mother's guns that he got into. Were they NOT locked in a gun box or
cabinet? They found FOUR guns, last I heard."

If the family was keeping guns in the home, it's unlikely that locking them up would have helped. If the kid was bound and determined to get the guns, sooner or later he would have figured out how to get them.

In our family, we have had to deal with the issue of a family member who was both highly intelligent and mentally ill. (And who, by the way, is now doing very well.) I shudder to think what might have happened had we had a gun in the home.

I'm all in favor of gun rights, and in fact am a gunowner myself now. But simple prudence should tell you that the mentally ill should *never* have access to firearms.

295 If anyone's interested, science fiction author John Brunner published a novel in 1968 called 'Stand On Zanzibar' predicting an increase in solo murderous rampages. Brunner called them 'muckers', a derivative of the word 'amok'.

In the novel, the prevalence of these attacks was caused by psychologically vulnerable people being overwhelmed by the psychic pressures caused by, among other things, the increasingly hectic, unresting pace of modern existence, the pressures of overpopulation, and the massive, chaotic influx of stimuli via media. At the time Brunner wrote the novel, there had been instances of mass murder along the lines of the school shootings and rampages we've experienced: Unruh and Whitman come immediately to mind.

So do I think Brunner was/is right about the causes? Yes and no. 'Overpopulation' was a big meme of the Sixties and I frankly don't buy it. However, I do believe media plays a part, disconnecting people from the real world and reinforcing the sociopathic/narcissistic seed belief that others are two-dimensional bit players and props in the movie of the killer's life.

And then, of course, there have always been psychotic maniacs who derive sexual and psychological pleasure from causing pain and taking life.
