Update: Virtually Nothing In The Original Reports About the Killer Was Correct

I am so lost with the corrections that I don't even want to mention the current information, which is probably also wrong, but: They now say the killer was not 24 year old Ryan Lanza, who was arrested, but may be innocent of everything; now they say the killer was his 20 year old younger brother Adam.

I suppose, then, Ryan was either an accomplice (which I figure is much less likely) or an intended target of his brother.

"Beach," citing a forensic psychologist he heard on Sun News, called the killer a "family annihilator" -- unfortunately, this is so common it has a well-known shorthand. The Family Annihilator, I guess, is such a vicious malignant narcissist, so hateful of himself (and yet also so egotistical) that his idea of suicide is to attempt to erase any trace of himself, by killing everyone related to him by blood or affection. We see despondent husbands do this a fair amount, killing wife, children and self; we see women do it too.

Or maybe this is as close to Vengeance Against God for having even been born as these lunatics can get-- by murdering anyone who is somehow related to his existence, the killer gets payback for his own misbegotten birth?

Unfortunately, the death toll reports are generally accurate.

95 One thing about mental illness. It's kept quiet because families are ashamed. Ashamed it was something they did wrong. Or that it reflects poorly on them. Which it does since it is genetic.

In arranged marriage cultures, like India, families try hard to uncover any mental illness in your family treet.

So people who don't have experience with mental illness in their family or friends, often don't realize how relatively common it is.

If somebody is in a car accident and has to be in the hospital for 6 months, the family will tell everybody. If that same person has to spend 6 months in a psych ward ... often nobody outside the immediate family will know. The person will just kind of ... drop off the grid for a while.

Yes, this is a horribly unspeakable crime and I feel for the families and loved ones affected. But to give in to the belief that this world is fucked just gives the evil more power. All I can do in response is love my family and friends, do something meaningful, be kind and generous, and live the best life I can. It's all anyone can do.

210 If it does turn out that this monster was afflicted, then it bolsters my belief that institutionalization is the safest option. 211 #181 There were initial reports that Jim Brady was dead, because he was sbhot in the head point blank and didn't move after he hit the ground. Reagan appeared unhurt when he was shoved into his limo; it wasn't until they took off that he realized he was shot and they headed to the hospital.

212 I'm just destroyed by this. I have a 5 year old daughter in kindergarten. My wife was a kindergarten teacher for 4 years. (And there was an incident where an enraged man entered the school with a gun) I'm taking my daughter for a dress rehearsal tonight for a performance tomorrow. It's closed to parents and they want us to drop off the kids without coming in. (like drop off at school) Not feelin that right now.

215 I am a retired pilot, both military and commercial. Whenever there is a crash, I get questions about what happened. My standard answer is, in the first 24 hours, to believe there was an incident, the location, and the number of people involved. Believe NOTHING else, as it will most likely be wrong. That seems to be valid for other types of tragedies.

217 So...like a 3 day waiting period before you can get your gun?

I thought it was longer. Reminds me of this 'Simpsons' classic:

Homer: Just give me my gun!
Wiseguy: Sorry, the law requires a five day waiting period. We've got to run a background check.
Homer: Five days? But I'm mad now! Oh, I'd kill you if I had my gun.
Wiseguy: Yeah, well, you don't.

The problem is, a lot of these disorders have overlapping diagnostic criteria, so depending on who is applying the label, you can have a lot of confusion. Sometimes patients who have seen multiple providers have multiple diagnoses that are mutually exclusive, and nobody bothers to clean up the medical record to the point where patients themselves have any kind of clear understanding of their diagnoses.

220 Doing a quick google it does seem that people with autism/asperger do often have anger issues due to their frustration with communicating. But they talk about outbursts. This is more than an outburst.

221 They call the uncontrolled anger cycle of an autistic a meltdown. It's like a temper tantrum on steroids that becomes self fueling and self purposing.

Autism/aspergers may not cause you to kill someone, but it can remove the natural barriers that prevent you from reaching the killing point, especially if combined with bad outside influences.

222 Just an observation

We've had guns for 200 years in America, and these things happened very rarely, a once in a decade occurrence maybe

Since the 60s, we've had a big increase in gun control legislation but also a big increase in mass shootings

Posted by: kbdabear at December 14, 2012 05:19 PM (wwsoB)

223 I think the first thing they'll do is work on the ammo, then gun sales, and the third thing would be confiscation.

I don't think it'll be the ammo. I imagine they'd take the same approach as in the past- first ban manufacture and importation as with the ineffective '96 ban.

Then, the '86 NFA route. No transfer or possession of weapons that weren't registered by a given date.

Once they're registered... well, you can guess the rest.

That said, gun control is such an unpopular political issue right now that I don't see any of this happening soon. For a Republican congressman to cave on gun control would be political suicide.

224 Our twenty four hour news spectacle shoves out a whole lot of blather with rumor, innuendo, and a dash of facts in a short period of time. Eventually, facts will get out, quicker if the perpetrators are dead, and we will find out the backstory.

At these times, it generally pays to just shut off the supposed news, ignore the commentators, and just hug those you love and hold them tight. Life is precious and fleeting for most of us.

We can problem solve on another day when we have more reliable information.

226 I fault the Connecticut state police, giving press conferences but no information. Just listened to one on the radio and the cop couldn't answer 99% of the questions. I can see the need to protect the children's families' identity, but come on. No confirmed information anywhere? The cop holding the press conference wouldn't even confirm the shooter's name. What the hell are these people doing? There are a gazillion law enforcement agencies there and none of these people have figured out the story? If this had happened in a metro area, we'd have the info in a few hours.

253 Ace is all over the place, as usual. Here is the question, one that conservatives are too afraid to ask. Has this guy ever expressed any views,in person or online, about gun ownership and gun control. If so, what are they. Everyone in this country, if a full police investigation were done on them, could be found to have said something on the subject at some time.
Call me whatever you want, but I'll bet the farm that ths guy, they guy in OR and Aurora were all on the Obama supporting progressive leaning/supporting side of the spectrum, had all voiced opposition to gun ownership in this country to someone at some time(s), and that this is known by law enforcement and is being suppressed. Nobody has heard one peep about the Aurora killer in quite a while, have they? Pretty much an information blackout, washed down the memory hole. He's a loon, so nothing to know. The OR killer? Haven't heard a peep about him either. What's that quote by Hayek again?

254 Autism means developmental impairment, often at around 'terrible 2 year old' stage. Emotionally almost total selfishness, no empathy, often no awareness that other beings exist except as pawns in the autist's play.

But what do 2 year olds want? Mother! Mother's attention 24-7. When mother gives attention to someone else, say her Kindergarten class, the autist becomes extremely jealous.
