22 Students Slashed By Knife-Wieldening Maniac In China

It's very odd timing that this story shows up now-- and I don't mean to suggest a conspiracy theory, or suggest it's a false story, or anything like that.

It's just that the timing is in fact odd. (It's strange that no one can say anything without a series of jam-packed implications automatically flowing from it any more.)

BEIJING (Reuters) - A knife-wielding man slashed 22 children and an adult at an elementary school in central China on Friday, state media reported, the latest in a series of attacks on schoolchildren in the country.

...

There have been a series of attacks on schools and schoolchildren around China in recent years, some by people who have lost their jobs or felt left out of the country's economic boom.

The story comes almost as if to make the point: Liberals talk about banning guns as if it's the same as banning murder and banning evil. That's why they are so dogmatic and emotional on the point: How can you be in favor of murder? How can you oppose banning evil?

But guns are not the same as murder, and murder is not the same as guns. Here, in China, a man showed up with murderous intent and armed himself with just a knife. True, he didn't kill as many people as the gun-wielding maniac (or maniacs) in Connecticut did. I suppose that will be the lesson the left draws from this.

Note, by the way, that such attacks have escalated in China due to job dislocations and poor economic circumstances (at least for some). One can find a lot of Hidden Causes, and some additional Villains Behind It All, if one likes.

And yes, Obama has to inject himself into the school shooting.

Why? Because he's Lincoln and it's an easy way to score cheap political points and show leadership by simply saying a few trite and glib words.

I put this in the previous thread, but it seems more appropriate here:

"The Dunblane school massacre occurred at Dunblane Primary School in the Scottish town of Dunblane on 13 March 1996. The gunman, 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton (b. 10 May 1952), entered the school armed with four handguns, shooting and killing sixteen children and one adult before committing suicide. Along with the 1987 Hungerford massacre and the 2010 Cumbria shootings, it remains one of the worst criminal acts involving firearms in the history of the United Kingdom.

Public debate subsequent to these events centred on gun-control laws, including media-driven public petitions calling for a ban on private ownership of handguns and an official enquiry, the Cullen Report. In response to this debate, the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1997 and the Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997 were enacted, which effectively made private ownership of handguns illegal in the United Kingdom."

So...we can expect the same push to make handguns illegal here, 2nd Amendment or no.
(note
that the Cumbria shootings referred to above occurred in 2010, and
involved a rifle and shotgun, both licensed, not a handgun.)

62 FWIW, in Israel the law REQUIRES that groups of more than half a dozen children be accompanied by armed guards.

Read that again.

Its because of an incident years back where some Palestinian terrorists (of course) tried to shoot up a kindergarden.

Anyway, this creates a situation where 24 year old female Israeli Kindergarden teachers take the kids out on field trips packing Uzi submachine guns.

Liberals heads would explode if that happened here, but even in Israel (which, contrary to what many believe, has an active peacenik left rivalling anything in the USA) its accepted with a shrug as the best medicine to prevent the sort of tragedy that happened today in CT.

Another interesting concept in group think is where people that still have no idea what really happened will immediately begin constructing narratives for exactly why it happened. It might be a good idea to at least wait until the bodies cool off and the shooter is identified before expounding on the precise pathology behind the act.

The fact of the matter is if you are in the mood to murder, maim, or produce mayhem, you're going to find a way to do it. Our reaction to such violence shouldn't be to blame the weapons used -- that's foolish and nonsensical. It doesn't do anything except force sociopaths and psychos to get creative. We should be blaming the cultural and social framework that not only allows these miscreants to bloom into monsters, but that also fails to equip the killers themselves with the appropriate moral and ethical compass to realize that what they want to do is wrong and that they need to do something RIGHT instead.

There are all sorts of movies with the anti-hero facing off against the cops and going out spectacularly. And these portrayals show the anti-hero as being perversely noble. And this unstable guy who just got screwed says "Hey, that's the way to go, guns blazing and then die young and leave a good-looking corpse, and people will always remember you." Umm. OK. I didn't see anyone suggesting anything about a precise pathology. Only hypothesizing about a possible way to connect two seemingly unrelated though functionally similar events. Last I checked hypothesizing ahead of the search for precise proof was part of the scientific method.

this is a bit of a strawman. my main issue is when libs refuse to acknowledge that there's any reason for owning a gun. my dad does this, talking about how "statistics show" that people use their guns on family members thinking it's a break-in, or in an actual break-in the gun's taken from them, etc. etc. it's this weird determinism that because certain accidents happen we should just get rid of all of them.

It is the WHAT that needs to be punished, to hell with the WHY. Nobody cares why he did it--that implies that we could somehow have controlled the situation and changed the outcome. If we could have, why didn't we? Because we can't.

Not only is it difficult to simply "outrun" a person with a knife intent on cutting you, even if you had a gun, the knife-man has the advantage within 21 feet.

It's true. Unless you already have your weapon unholstered, cocked, ready to fire, and aimed, you're gonna get cut if he's closer than 21 feet.

Knives are bloody awful weapons.

189 When 24 hour cable first came out this kind of tragic event was supposed to be their forte.

Yet with all of the redundant reports while the anchors stall for time for just about ANYTHING to report, it won't be long before it's reported that watching breaking stories like this cause something akin to post time killing brain cell death disorder or some other lib pop ailment.

I just heard a female doctor on ABC radio (they broke into Rush's show) actually say that people listening to reports of this across the country are in danger of getting PTSD.

The stupid is accelerating.

212 Pf course, if something like this happened in 1987 they would have pegged him as playing Dungeons Dragons. Of course, in 1987 people left schools alone, unless they were picking up kids or had legit reasons for being there. Only goblins I had to worry about at school were the tame ones in the remedial classes. *sigh* The world is undergoing a change, and it is not for the better.

Posted by: eleven at December 14, 2012 02:59 PM (fsLdt)

217 Oh, the police found the body of the shooter's father. Amazingly enough (or not) shooter was being treated for "mental illness". Which leads to the point where we as society get to decide to what constitutes mental illness, what constitutes dangerous crazy, and what constitutes plain old goblin doing wrong for kicks and twisted desire for fame?
