| Top Headline Comments 12-13-12Happy Thursday. Republicans are now looking for a third option in the fiscal cliff debate. Most proposals involve taking tax cuts out of the equation by conceding on tax cuts for the wealthy (where we've utterly lost public opinion), but forcing spending cuts when the debt ceiling has to be raised (where we've not lost public opinion quite yet). One version is discussed here. Another interesting proposal is over here.Comments1

Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, December 13, 2012. On this day in 1978 the Mint began producing the Susan B. Anthony dollar. It was the first U.S. coin honoring a woman. It lasted a few months before everyone said bleh. Like all the other dollar coins they made, they insisted in making it the same size as the quarter. They quit making them in 1981 for anything but coin collections.

Here is my let it burn scenario. Boehner should propose real federal income tax rate cuts for all but the top income level and introduce complementary spending cuts. Forget the math; the GOP can then claim to really be making middle class tax cutswhile Obama and the Democrats would own the tax rate increases that are coming at the beginning of the new year. As far as I'm concerned, the GOP can't convince the public that Obama and the Dems are completely irresponsible so they need to do one better without a spending increase.

RE: "(where we've utterly lost public opinion) . . .
Say, here's an idea. Since the Republicans have utterly lost public opinion, and since they're going to be blamed whatever they choose -- why not choose to do The Right Thing -- which is not to vote to raise taxes on anyone. That way, at least they can begin the long long process of regaining principle and credibility such that those who have those things will give them a second look when it comes time to vote. As it is, for conservatives like me, if somebody has an R after their name, I get a bad taste in my mouth anyway and have to pause to consider whether I'll vote for them. I believe this new bond buying program is in addition to the QE infinity program he already has going which prints another $40 billion per month. So now the total will be around $85 billion / month, which is enough to fully monetize the entire deficit spending for 2013. If he had to throw $45 billion a month in new debt on the open market, interest rates would have to rise to lure customers; can't be having that now can we. Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Thanks for the news roundup, Gabe and Vic. I’m going to try to keep my rage in check today; it doesn’t do my heart any good. Today, rather than a long story or two, I’m just going to throw a few little noshes your way:
If you've watched The Godfather, you'll remember the murder of Luca Brasi (Lenny Montana). As he's being garroted, his face turns a deep, dark purple. It's not CGI - so how was it done? Very simply. Before the scene began, Montana's face was dusted with a translucent powder which turns black on contact with water. All that had to happen as the scene played out was for a makeup artist offscreen to spray a very fine mist (which can just barely be seen in the Blu-Ray transfer) onto Montana's face and then - hey, presto! A realistic death scene. You might remember that a few weeks ago, I mentioned the story of C.B. DeMille insisting that, during the Exodus scene of The Ten Commandments, an extra was smoking a cigarette, a blooper which no one since has ever seen. Well, here are a few bloopers that people have caught: Lethal Weapon 2: Mel "But First You Will Blow Me" Gibson is put into a straitjacket and tossed into a river. He dislocates his left shoulder to escape. Back on dry land, he slams his right shoulder against a car to put it back in place. Fear.com: The heroine of the movie is a hemophiliac, which is medically impossible. The disease is passed through the female line, but affects only men. Gladiator: After his battle with the Germans, Maximus feeds his horse an apple. A crew member (in jeans, no less!) can be seen in the background. Gone With The Wind: When Scarlet runs down the streets of Atlanta towards Aunt Pittypat's house, she apparently rushes through a time slip, since she dashes past the only electric light in America, a good 40 years before Edison gets around to inventing it. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: Remember the scene where Indy finds himself face-to-face with Der Fuhrer? Take a look at Doctor Jones' autograph book. The left-handed Adolf Hitler signs the name Adolph with his right hand. And that’s it for me. Hope you all have a wonderful day. Stay debt-free and cash liquid, enjoy your life and don't let losers like Obama get you down. There will be a day when he and his ilk are gone from the White House, and the flood gates will again open up and release a torrent of pent up capital into our economy. It just won't happen in the next 48 months because we foolishly re-elected a socialist who hates us.
Our goals right now should therefore be to free ourselves of accrued debt except for low-interest mortgages (or at least working on it Dave Ramsey style), avoiding all unnecessary borrowing, and waiting for that fool Bernanke to be replaced with someone who allows interest rates to do what they naturally do. Everyone who has cleared the decks, remained liquid, and hunkered down will be able to retire on the low-risk high-yield interest of friggin' CDs at that point. Hey Mary. As to Lenny Montana, a couple of interesting things. Coppola was more or less forced to hire him by the mobsters. Turns out he was a low-level hood. He was so bad at delivering his lines that Coppola inserted a bit in the beginning at Connie's wedding where he's rehearsing his speech to Don Vito to make him seem nervous and tentative. As to the death scene, Lenny was also an ex-pro wrestler and he learned how to gag and bulge his eyes out as part of his act. Progressive taxes should be unconstitutional. A citizen is a citizen each owing their fair and equal share of the burden of governance. Because one is luckier, works harder, or is simply smarter than another is no reason to penalize the person with more assets.

That's right, J.J. - I'd forgotten that story! I remember that scene where Montana's going over and over his speech. In fact, I remember seeing the story in a Vanity Fair article on the making of Godfather.
Which reminds me of a story from the 1937 Warner Brothers movie Marked Woman, starring Bette Davis. In the movie, she's a nightclub hostess working for a gangster. One of the gangster's henchmen was, as it turns out, a rotten actor and producer Hal Wallis tore director Lloyd Bacon a new one. "Why the hell didn't you get somebody who looks like he could break legs? This guy looks like some damn pansy-ass five-dollar extra!" "Well, Hal, I'm sorry to tell you," Bacon replied, "that he's one of Lucky Luciano's right-hand guys. We put him in the picture for realism." As you can imagine, Wallis only gulped, "feets, don't fail me now!" and beat shoe leather off the set! Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at December 13, 2012 07:42 AM (SjUPQ) 85

Al Ruddy is one of the handful of people in show biz (at that I've encountered) who is a genuine and decent person. Every now and then, we would gather in the conference room on a Friday afternoon and Al would retrieve some vodka or scotch and then regale us with "Godfather" stories, as well as other tales over his long career. The next thing anyone knew, it would be like 10:30 at night and Al would go "oh shit, I gotta get the hell out of here. My wife's gonna kill me!" Very good times. Posted by: J.J. Aren't most of the really good bloopers well known? I seem to recall seeing lists, but I tend to forget those things. Except a few... the movie A Few Good Men, which I hate, has Cruise eating an apple at one point, and you see him set it down with much of the apple gone. Next scene you see the apple, and it has maybe one bite out of it. The other one, Colonel Jessup is being held back after the big climax scene, and his tie is pulled up and out, and generally out of order. Flash to Cruise, then immediately flash back to Nicholson, and remarkably the tie is perfectly straight, with no sign of a struggle. I'd like to think, Reiner, in addition to having no clue about the military, doesn't know anything about tying ties either. Posted by: BurtTC at December 13, 2012 07:52 AM (BeSEI) 105

I don't have any advice for the Republicans now running the show. They were ambushed a long time ago. This or that reputation enhancement cum budget proposal strikes me as terminal wonkishness.
The spending is only the evidence of Leviathan amok, stomping on our lives and Liberty with its scaly, clawed lizard feet. Should there be a next time, and I doubt it (think tank in the gulag?), the G.O.P. should follow the advice of Roy Boehm and "F**k the f**king f**kers." Prefer a less pithy version? Here you go: "Q: Explain the “Haul Ass” strategy of fighting you discuss in the book. A: If you find yourself in a situation that requires you fight, use what we call “violence of action.” Go at it with 150 percent effort, and disengage as soon as possible. Hit the link, and the price seems right. Then notice that I'm at a crossing dressing web site. When the Marx Bros. career was flagging at Paramount, he convinced a stubborn L.B. Mayer to sign them. The Brothers were supposed to meet in Thalberg's office at 10 AM and just as the meeting was going to start he got called away and promised to return quickly. Well, the minutes turned into an hour and a half and as Groucho tells it "...we called down to the commissary and ordered some 'mickey's, potatoes, and when we got them, we stripped off all our clothes, threw a few scripts into the fireplace, lit 'em up and roasted the mickeys. Then Irving came back and boy was he surprised." Surprised is an understatement! Anyway, the film that they went on to make was "A Night at the Opera" and the rest is history. Posted by: J.J. Well, there actually is a long legal history of polygamy being tolerated and even encouraged. There has never before been a widespread acceptance of homosexuality, however. Even in the niche instances where limited homosexuality has been tolerated, it has been in response to some cultural exigency and those involved have been isolated.
That said, I don't care about the gay thing one way or another. It's their decision and I've got more important things to concern myself with than other people's sexual preferences. Posted by: Just Eight Days Now Until Our Special Mayan Holiday Season at December 13, 2012 08:09 AM (bS6uW) 152

Even if you're not an MB fan - and I'm not - Groucho's reminiscences about life on the road are priceless. And he's got an absolutely filthy mouth - when pointed out that he was the comic and Harpo the musician, sowhat did Chico contribute to the act, Groucho said, "Chico introduced gonorrhea to the Orpheum circuit." A blogger asks how Obama gets away with always blaming other people for his failures:
http://scoamf.us/4H I answer thusly. Obama’s base consists entirely of people who’ve spent their whole lives blaming others for their circumstances. e.g. “The reason I’m poor is because other people are rich (not because I dropped out of school, had four kids out of wedlock, and have no work ethic or marketable skills.”) e.g. “I got AIDS because Ronald Reagan didn’t talk about AIDS enough during his presidency. (It had nothing to do with my IV drug use or promiscuous unprotected buttsecks.)” e.g. “I’m a miserable spinster because of the Religious Right and their puritan attitudes about womyn’s sexuality. According to Wikipedia, it's illegal in 37 states, so that leaves 13.
Posted by: Pope Pol Pot at December 13, 2012 08:06 AM (OqWMe) Awful; I am flabbergasted Sadly, in 17 states bestiality/zoophilia is still legal. This includes Guam and American Samoa. The other states where it's legal are Alabama, Connecticut, Hawaii, Kentucky, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming and the District of Columbia. That's a sad commentary about our country where this type of atrocity is allowed to go on with virtually no legal ramifications. http://is.gd/qORXNa Posted by: Vic at December 13, 2012 08:10 AM (YdQQY) 158

Yes! G-d bless Groucho. Anyway, a Chico story: He had a reputation for being a total puss-hound. Anyway, they were all invited to a fairly high-scoiety cocktail party hosted by Tallulah Bankhead, and were afraid of what he might say. Chico promised to behave but not five minutes after arriving, as Chico was introduced to Miss Bankhead, in front of the entire crowd he said, "nice to meet you, Miss Bankhead. You know, I'd really like to fuck you." Dead silence until she replied, "you know, Mr. Marx, by the end of this evening that is entirely possible." I knew the son of a very well known old time Hollywood agent, and he told me that when he was a kid, his dad used to drag him to poker games at the Bel Air Country Club where seated at the table were Groucho, George Burns, Lew Wasserman and assorted other "alta-cockers." He said that when they got going they started talking in Yiddish to preserve a little discretion and protect the innocent, as it were. Anyway, his one wish was to go back in time with a video camera to have recorded those games. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at December 13, 2012 08:17 AM (XkWWK) 165

The Obama Administration has ordered changes in a new military handbook to now forbid U.S soldiers from criticizing the Taliban.
In addition, our men in uniform are forbidden to disparage pedophilia. Even further, our soldiers are instructed not to speak of women’s rights. Or homosexuality. Or criticism of Afghans at all. The manual, which runs 75 pages, insinuates that the reason for the insider attacks among our troops by Muslims is that we are ignorant of Afghani culture. The handbook intones: “Better situational awareness/understanding of Afghan culture will help better prepare [troops] to more effectively partner and to avoid cultural conflict that can lead toward green-on-blue violence.” It’s our insensitivity that fosters the sneak attacks inside our armed services. 63 of our soldiers have been murdered in almost 40 insider attacks just this year. U.S. Marine General John Allen, the top commander in Afghanistan, “does not approve of its contents,” according to a military spokesman. This follows an Obama Administration decision in 2012 that removed any materials that portrayed Muslims negatively. The FBI was ordered by Obama to eviscerate instructional material that shows Muslims as violent or open to becoming terrorists. And it’s not just the FBI; almost all federal agencies are now tasked with Muslim outreach. The Justice Department has an Islamic civil rights program, Homeland Security has coffee with Muslim organizations that are radical, and even NASA was pushed on Muslim diplomacy. My head is spinning. Oh, I know that Bankhead story, J.J. - I must have told it here before you were a regular. Anyway, in my version, Bankhead was supposed to have replied to Chico's "I want to fuck you" with, "And so you shall, dear boy!" And then, of course, there was the time she asked Thalberg, "How does one get laid in this dreadful town?" to which he answered, "Just ask around. I'm sure you'll have no difficulty." And wouldn't that have been something to be next to the Bel-Air table? I'd take that over the preening fools at the Algonquin any day. There was an old Bennett Cerf story that a woman member of the club used to reserve a table next to the comics for lunch every day, saying, "Where else am I going to hear the best jokes in town for free?" That's what I was told by my intellectual betters last time, anyway, when I pointed out that with control of the House, we could put our foot down. As much as "begging the question" gets abused, "raise the debt ceiling because the debt ceiling must be raised" is as good an example of this fallacy as I've ever seen. I live in Fairfax County, Virginia. In the 25 years between 1985 and 2010 (including my time in the army), I worked in or around the Federal Government. I've met a number of republicans in that time. About a quarter of those republicans would consider me a domestic terrorist if they knew that I want to see the debt ceiling held. If the GOP plays along, leaves the one card that the one-half-of-one-third actually holds off the table, and does every meaningless gesture it can, then we get to chaos at some point coming upon us quickly. Let-it-Burn is the same thing except without the meaningless gestures in the hopes that we get to chaos even sooner. The problem with these approaches is that they are a continuation of the "Tax the rich; Feed the poor; 'Til there are no rich no more" trajectory this country has been on since before most of us were even born. It's just the pace that is changing. It isn't that the FSA are going to be coming for your shit. The FSA has been taking your income. They are growing, getting hungrier, and don't even bother dressing it up as somehow noble anymore. The key is to set them on each other now, and the one-half-of-one-third have this power. Refuse to raise the debt ceiling and force Obama to pick and choose which of his parasitic factions get shorted the next time the handouts are due. FSA already takes massive bites out of your income. Anyone worried about the day that FSA will come for your assets can stop worrying right now. They've been helping themselves to your assets via Quantitative Easing for the last four years. I'm not surprised NH hasn't made bestiality illegal. We ARE the "live free or die" state. Though I think it's more likely that no one's ever noticed that, amid our dozens of RSAs, none of them prohibit bestiality.
I remember when Mike Barnicle (yes, that one) once said that, in NH, "the most common complaint is the sheep either have a headache or they lie." That quote was from a positively scintillating column Barnicle wrote back in 1994 contrasting Vermont and NH. In short, Vermont is a paradise full of intelligent, urbane sophisticates, while NH is full of low IQ neanderthals who drink beer and shoot things. If you'd like to read the whole thing, feel free! You can find it here: http://boulter.com/nh/barnicle.html. It really is a wonderfully even-handed, witty bit of literary genius. *rolling eyes* Oh, and Mike Barnicle can go fuck himself with a rusty claw hammer. She didn't press charges, and she testified for him on his behalf. This despite the fact he pleaded guilty to misdemeamor assault and has to go to a court ordered domestic abuse class. Just read on The Daily Mail that the girlfriend of Jim Moran's son claims that she and he were arguing when the heel of her shoe broke, throwing her face into the trash can. She didn't press charges, and she testified for him on his behalf. This despite the fact he pleaded guilty to misdemeamor assault and has to go to a court ordered domestic abuse class. She claims she had no broken bones, and she didn't miss any time at work. Interestingly, this article pointed out that Jim Moran's second wife complained he assaulted her. My theory on the tax vote (posted on the AoSHQ Yahoo Group):
I have a paranoid theory about the upcoming vote about taxes. The Media is relentlessly beating the drum that the Republicans must vote to raise taxes. We all know that the Republicans will cave. I think what the Media (and of course the Democrats) want is a huge majority of Republicans to vote for a tax increase. A majority so complete that every Democrat could vote against it, and it would still pass. Why? Well, that way it still goes to the Senate. Harry Reid can say, "The Republicans say we won't listen to their ideas. Well, in the spirit of bipartisanship, we are going to pass this bill. It's obvious the Democrats don't want to raise taxes, but let us try their ideas." Obama can say the same as he signs it into law. The Republicans now own the tax increases. This brings an added dividend in 2014. The Televisionians, when they switch on their flat-panel gods, will see political ads that say "In 2012, Gene 'Ric' Republican voted to raise your taxes. I, Demo Cretin, vow that if you elect me, I will fight for working families, to help you build a better life for yourself..." (continuing on with various horsepoop). So, what do you think? Is this just paranoia? Or have I looked into the future? Posted by: BeckoningChasm at December 13, 2012 08:54 AM (xjpRj) 250

Let Obama have his tax increases on the "rich", but stop the spending. No cap increase without a return to 2006 spending. In the same way doing nothing gets tax increases, doing nothing gives Obama no cap increase to go on a spending spree. Canada to consider other planes besides F-35
By Rob Gillies - The Associated Press Posted : Wednesday Dec 12, 2012 18:20:07 EST TORONTO — Canada is considering buying fighter jets other than U.S.-made F-35s because of escalating costs associated with Lockheed Martin’s troubled Joint Strike Fighter program, the country’s defense minister said Wednesday. The government acknowledged Wednesday it could still buy the F-35. Other planes that could be considered include Boeing’s Super Hornet or the European consortium made Eurofighter Typhoon jet. Japan has said it may cancel its plans to buy dozens of the F-35s and Australia has said that to cut costs it is pushing back delivery of most of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighters. Kwanzaa is a lame holiday, anyway. It's designed not to celebrate but to "teach lessons," sort of like those terrible ABC After School Specials of the 70's.
MY holiday is the Nine Nights of the Nordic Lights. Outdoor bonfires. Scandinavian food. Jarlsberg beer and Aqvavit. Ski sweaters. Decor is all snowflakes and icicles and such. Good music like "The Immigrant Song" and other loud stuff, preferable some Wagner as well. Played with brass and drums, annoying the Kawanzaa people who are lighting their stupid candles. The only reasons people observe Kwanzaa is as an excuse to get more presents, try to excuse not showing up for work after Christmas, and to make themselves feel super-special. Everyone with their intelligent and thoughtful solutions to the fiscal crisis: have any of you all paid any attention to John Boehner?
The point man in all of the scenarios you unwrap? Have you read about or watched him in the past and his previous performance? Do you really think this feckless lip sucker has the fortitude and/or desire to stand up against Obama? Or what he may perceive as his duty to keep the country from immediate default? (I say immediate in terms of it coming sooner rather than later which apparently John thinks is more important that it be delayed than dealt with. At least by him anyhow.) What fantasy world you all are living in if you think he will grow a pair and/or change his behavior under duress and in a short time. So let's stop with the imminently sane and rational or the imminently insane and irrational expositions about how the crisis should be handled. Boehner will not do either. I believe that he may just be delaying all this to maintain his hold on the speakership. This is how petty he may be but it does fit with his past performance. Until Boehner is removed there is no point in discussion. Posted by: Bitter Clinger (aka Ol' 3 tooth) at December 13, 2012 09:06 AM (3E2th) 290

A huge money sink for the schools in maintenance costs. I don't understand these parents who feel that they can't give their kids a normal first name however if they really want the kid to have a unique name stop with the Madison and Dakotas nonsense. Go for something really unique like Lipshitz.
Posted by: TheQuietMan at December 13, 2012 09:09 AM (1Jaio) See, names like Madison or Dakota or Cheyenne don't bother me. I think they're quite nice, actually, and especially meaningful if the place name has some emotional or personal significance to the family. And Madison, of course, was the name of the mermaid in "Splash!," so every little girl wanted to be named Madison when i was a kid. MY issues come from parents who give their kids normal names but butcher the spelling in an attempt to be unique. FUCK do I hate that. You can't just name your son "Michael" anymore; it has to be Mykel, or Mychal or Mikul. You can't just name a girl Emily anymore; it has to be Emmillee or Emalee or Emeelee. And don't get me started on names like Jonathan, Desiree, or Steven -- you might as well punch those kids' tickets to a lifetime of having their names misspelled, mispronounced, and misinterpreted. My biggest pet peeve is people who take liberties with "Melissa," since that happens to be MY name. Melissa is the most common spelling, but do you think anyone ever gets it right the first time they spell it? Maybe 1 in 10. The other 9 invariably spell it Mellissa, or Melisa, or Mellisa, or some other variant. Well fine; okay. It's annoying but manageable. But NOW. Oh, NOW we've got parents DELIBERATELY naming their daughters "Muhlyssa," "Malyssa," "Mahllissa," and other truly ugly variations. I saw one once named "Mallessa" and I wanted to punch the mother in the mouth. It's to the point where I'm convinced only half of these fucked up "normal" names are due to the desire to be unique; the other half are due to straight up illiteracy on the part of the parents. There's no other reason to spell Nicole N-I-C-K-O-H-L-E. Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Hobbit at December 13, 2012 09:21 AM (4df7R) 320

And the whole F/A-18 program has also been a colossal waste of money. From the YF-17 to the F/A-18FSD - F/A-18A - F/A-18C - F/18E.
Northrop YF-17 lost to the General Dynamics YF-16 for the USAF LWF competition. So they teamed with McDonnell-Douglas to win a Navy contract for a plane to replace the F-4 and A-7. So McDonnell-Douglas put in 'fixes like the snags on the wings. Then the FSD Hornets found those fixes were dangerous. So they were eliminated. Others like the extreme vortexes coming from the LEX cut-outs caused the twin tails to wag like mad. So they added eternal stiffeners to the tail bases, the cleats that look like antennas just behind the LEX were added, and also filled in the cut-outs. And the F/A-18A and Cs also fell short of the range requirement the Navy originally laid out. The only fix is to put external tanks on the plane. So a Hornet could do a round trip hit to Pinellas bombing range only with three tanks and carrying only two tons of bombs. Did I mention the Navy and Marines found they were losing Hornets because of the dual role mission. One temp fix was to program the HUD to give the pilots an arrow pointer on where to put the stick to recover. The F-18E is a completely new airplane. Bigger wing with two more hard points. Longer fuselage. Beefier landing gear. New engines. More fuel. But has less maneuverability than the F/A-18A/Cs. And less acceleration. So that anyone is truly shocked the F-35 is a dog is someone who has not been paying attention to how the F-18 Mafia has broke the procurement system for 30 years. To continue on the procurement rant. It was because of all the money the F-18 program ate to fix all the various problems that other aircraft programs were sacrificed. The reason why only 72 F-14Ds were built can be laid to the Super Hornet program. Same with the A-6F Intruder II.
A Navy fleet of several hundred F-14Ds would have greater endurance on station or for deep strike missions than F-18Es. Carry more bombs also and have more room for growth. Unlike the Hornet, a Tomcat does not have to grow in size to meet missions. The Hornet has three times. The A-6F Intruder II would have shared engines with legacy Hornets and computers with the F-14D. And would have been a dedicated bomber unlike the F-18Es who still have to be dual mission. But both programs were cancelled while the Super Hornet was developed. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 13, 2012 09:38 AM (4+0nx) 341
Aye that does make sense, Anna, but I am also curious as to what kind of security those folks are using.
>_> I am no computer whiz by any stretch, but I know some very, VERY basic things, and so folks bring their PCs to me when they have a problem. There are two kinds of those folk; those who follow my browsing advice and utilize Firefox/recommended addons, and those who do not. Between the two, the ones who do not are the ones who get viruses. (o.O ) I'm not a coder, nor am I a hardware engineer, but it seems pretty simple to me, a layman, that if you use things like NoScript and stop malicious stuff from running on the web page before it finishes loading, then you're leaving yourself less open to attack. People just don't care about computer security. x_x It's particularly bad because these are schools where children are further exposed to things they really ought not to see. Feature, not bug, no doubt... Posted by: Kinley Ardal, carpenter jeans or bust at December 13, 2012 09:38 AM (O/vys) 342

If the kids 'lose' their laptop, then it's tough luck, go to the library and use their equipment to email your assignment in. Or borrow a friends. Yur shit-outa-luck. Like I said, I think it makes financial sense for the schools, and Lord knows I'm paying a ton for my public schools and want them to cut costs. With the prices of laptops being what they are, and students don't need the latest/greatest for word processing and internet, it's probably a good time for schools to shed the computer labs.
But more likely, they'll keep both and have to hire more people. So there's that side of the argument. Posted by: Schrödinger's cat at December 13, 2012 09:41 AM (feFL6) 344

The Procurement "system" was broke long before the F-18.
You should deal with the lower end of the system for the smaller parts and assemblies for ALL the services. You all hear about the $800 dollar toilet seats and stuff but you don't hear to often about WHY they're so expensive. It's because somewhere at sometime someone designed on or wrote the specs for it and had a company design it. From then on, no matter whether the materials are still available at a reasonable price, that design will be the final answer. To change anything is not worth the money. So what happens is outmoded material is found, at great expense, or a substitute is found, at great expense. And that's if the design was an efficient use of materials at that time. If it wasn't it's even more of a nightmare to produce. Then there's processes that aren't used anymore because they are expensive due to labor or other manu. costs. It's no gravy train for the small manufacturer to supply DoD materiel. Even the big guys can lose millions.
