White House Refuses To Condemn Union Violence

Unconscionable.

White House spokesman Jay Carney declined to condemn the increasing violence and threats by union members in Michigan, merely telling reporters Tuesday that “the president believes in debate that’s civil.”

When asked by a reporter about a claim by Michigan state Democrat that “there will be blood” should Republicans pass a union-choice law in Michigan, Carney professed ignorance and then downplayed the comment.

“I haven’t see those comments, and I’m not sure they mean what someone interprets them to mean,” he said.

131 I'm impressed with the GOP in WI and MI. It takes some balls to go ahead with this kind of reform.

If you were observing this country on the city, country, and state levels you would see the progressive model failing and on the run.

Yet we have this monster state at the federal level that no one wants to deal with. It's created so many dependents and its fixes would be so traumatic that it cannot be reformed without the force of major events (Major Events).

One scenario at this point is that the debt crisis undermines the rule of the federal government to the point that states assume formal powers, localize federal assets, and acts to insulate state residents from federal debt obligations.

My ideal scenario is that during this process a virus spreads that kills most men and all women except those between the ages of 24 and 35 with nice bodies and good psychology.

I'm from Michigan and union members in Michigan are assholes. Can't be said enough. These bastards need to be neutered and our new repub. governor may be a moderate squish, but he's doing a pretty good job of cutting their nuts off.

Union teachers are royally pissed at him. Does my heart good. He's gone into the worst districts, you know, like that shithole called the Detroit Public Schools, and thrown out the union contracts. In another district, they let all the teachers go, turned the district into charter schools, and told the teachers they could apply for a job. Minus tenure etc. The word was out that the administrators in other districts in the county said they wouldn't hire those teachers. That's how bad a reputation they had.

187 I'm trying to figure out what % of public sector unions are the politically popular cops, firefighters, and teachers.

In California cops and firefighters are implacable consumers of our wealth who bankrupt cities rather than give an inch. They all retire on disability before fifty and then get second government jobs.

I met a former cop and firefighter who was working for the L.A.U.S.D. The way the pensions here work, you get your twenty-year pension after putting in ten years, so this guy put in ten years each in the LAPD and LAFD, walked away in perfect health at age 48, on a 90 percent-of-pay pension two careers and disability for one, and he was starting his third government job.

His plan was to retire at 58 from the L.A.U.S.D. on disability and with a 90-percent pension, so in the end he'd be getting about $400,000 a year, not counting his health insurance.

He laughed as he told me.

Cops and firefighters in California are no longer my heroes.

239 The disability abuse is extremely common.

This is also extremely common in the military. I have multiple retired military members in my family. The reality is you get rewarded for claiming disability. Often these things are just normal aging that would be effecting a normal person in their 40s and 50s. I don't think they intend to defraud. It's just that when you retire if you check the right disability boxes on the forms ... you get a lot more money ... for the rest of your life. The temptation is overwhelming, nearly everybody does it.

My military family members really did spend time in warzones. But 98% of their career was sitting at a desk at a base stateside. And they weren't involved in any battles directly (though they were in theater at times) but all of them claimed some degree of disability when they retired.

I don't think it's a conscious lie. Maybe their nagging injuries and aches and problems really were due to their military career -- even though those problems are endemic among men their age. Maybe their military career accelerated those problems. No way to know.

Then there are those, such as my uncle, who fought in Vietnam and then spent the next 40+ years in depression and fighting Hep C. He saw using his benefits as charity and didn't seek help. He wasn't thinking quite right because of the depression.

Finally, a few months ago, another veteran convinced him to go to the VA. He did, and just three months later he is receiving care and, finally, the disability he could have claimed years ago.

280 A simple example is back pain. If you get occasional back pain that counts as a disability and you get extra pay.

Of course, what % of men in their 40s and 50s have occasional back pain. From my experience, approximately all of them. The human back seems designed to last till about your mid-30s. By that time you were supposed to have reproduced and likely been killed in some inter-tribal warfare.

Really, 35+ on a human is like how the Voyager space probe keeps working long past the initial design goals.

My wife's cousin was a firefighter years ago, and fell and "hurt his back". He's been on disability for as long as I've known him (+23 years) and now at 65 he's overweight and is having knee problems, the poor dear.

He's got a pretty new house, and he and his wife have retired on the money she inherited from her late father. Pretty sweet life.

And he loves the idea of Obama care, because now he can get that knee surgery that he needs, because he is overweight. And that has really cut into his golf game.

Fucker.

I was in a union a long time ago. Most of the guys were good guys. A little lazy in general, not the brightest, but ordinary joes. The real pieces of sh*t were the union stewards. They would demoralize new guys until they fell in line or quit. I ended up quitting because I refused to work slow. They knew which average Joes could be useful idiots and counted upon when incited to violence. The whole union thing became out of control in theearly 70's when the elite academics began to get theirs and the unions were encouraged to get what was "theirs" too. Since then it's been thugs and thieves protectecting their own illgotten piece of the pie. I don't necessarily blame the average union guy. But the guys in the in the union's middle and upper management, those are the real weasels.

361 Quite apart from the castigation of Carney here WITH NO BASIS FOR DOING SO (He's certainly not spending his day scrolling thru blogs looking to misinterpret the comments of others through ideologically austerian glasses), the incredible degree of historical ignorance of the THOUSANDS of American workers who've lost their lives in pursuit of collective bargaining rights since the turn of the last century into the late 30s is quite staggering.

Ace, not just you but the typical moron here simply has no conception of what this "right to work" crap does to the American working class and to the destruction of the middle class. When I read that statement, I read all about the context in which it was made, including the deeply underhanded way in which the Snyder regime has brought about RTW, and from all that became quite obvious that it wasn't meant as a vow, but rather it was meant as an observation about inevitability.

376 RTW has zero impact on collective bargaining rights. You're still free to form a union and bargain.

If the package you put together is a more compelling value than the company hiring and training ad-hoc, then the company will embrace the union.

If your package offers a better value to potential employees, they'll still join the union even in RTW environment rather than haggle with the personnel office on an ad-hoc basis.

Looks like the union bigwigs really mean it - how dare American workers be able to decide if the "benefits" the union supposedly provides is worth what they deduct from their paychecks...

Would be a nice Segway to today's union violence to put Oblamer's rally before the video from today, as it's pretty clear they're linked...causally.

Posted by: Truck Monkey at December 11, 2012 09:18 PM (jucos)

Hi Truck Monkey. History Ph.D. here. I'm sure others will have opinions, but IMO, the only way the South could have won is if they could have made the war end in the first two years. The North simply outclassed the South in material, tactical, economic, and technological advantages and the discrepancy only grew greater and greater as the war went on.

So possibly if a. the South could have enlisted the aid of a foreign country against the Union and cut the war off short.

or b. if the North did not re-elect Lincoln or for some other reason decided to simply give up.

Otherwise the Union winning was overdetermined with even only minimally competent leadership by the end of the second or the third year.

A good assignment/thought experiment is to compare and contrast the Revolutionary war with the Civil War, considering that George Washington was essentially fighting with the same advantages and tactics of the South and also the same goal as the South (i.e. not military dominance but just continued existence and acknowledgement by their opponent.

Then figure out why the North and Britain were different.

526 Oh you can't read the Confederate Constitution and say slavery had nothing to do with it. It just wasn't everything, tax policy, international trade, industrial policy, federalism all were important causes as well. The South really didn't have a choice though, Lincoln was hell bent on destroying them. At the time suddenly ending slavery would have brought almost as much ruin as the war itself did, the whole bloody economy was built around it. Pretty hard to pitch somebody the argument they should impoverish himself, his family and lay ruin to a whole region's economy on a moral argument, regardless how correct it might be. And Lincoln had made it clear he was going to to compromise about as much as Obama, no slow evolution for them, Revolution it was going to be regardless.

So the South did the Right thing for the Wrong reason while the North was doing the Wrong thing for the Right reason. Both being in the wrong all were Damned. The country never really recovered from it.

And it was the War for Southern Independence. A Civil War is when two factions fight over control over a nation state. The South had no desire to rule the North and Lincoln wanted to destroy and conquer the South, not much desire to rule it in any recognizable form.

Most Walmarts are pretty clean and well-stocked. My complaint is that I find there is lot of stuff I expect to be able to find in any decent grocery store that just is not carried in my local WalMart. Basics like flour, bacon, sugar, eggs are all there, but darn if I could find the foie gras section, and all the Dom Pérignon was 1985 or later.

The smart ones in the south understood that had to change. The industrial revolution was going to render slavery uneconomical within 20 years. Its something Lincoln should have realized.

538 I've not read enough of the political ideology of the Confederacy to know if it would have been a good thing or not had it lasted. The atrocity of slavery was on its way out regardless because of mechanization, and one hopes from a better understanding of Christianity, and there's no doubt that big government got a huge boost from Lincoln. If the North had sued for peace and there would have been two countries in the place of the original United States, one wonders if the Confederacy would have evolved into a small government republic like the original colonies, or if they would have fallen into the big government trap, as all western nations have done.

Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Thomas, Rosecrans, Reynolds, et al were at least as good as their Southern counterparts. It just took awhile for Lincoln to fire enough of their inept predecessors to get to the gold. And while the great Northern generals were emerging, the best Southern generals were getting killed or otherwise put out of action at an irreplaceable rate.

And then, of course, there was the civilian leadership to consider. Lincoln was the better leader than Davis and--in his way--certainly the most ruthless. Some Southerners consider Lincoln a tyrant to this day. Sour grapes, if you ask me. That lowborn hick lawyer from a Kentucky cabin out-thought and out-fought the lot of them: Davis, Lee, and all the rest. The neo-confederate crowd can't forgive him that.

Agreed. That and the growing consensus that slavery was incompatible with both Christianity and the Declaration of Independence. Working out how to wind it down without blowing up the country was the problem for most serious thinkers. But preening pricks like Lincoln (or Obama) care nothing about messy details, they are Right and everybody else better realize that and obey right now or else. Working within the Constitution to slowly figure out a way to end slavery peacefully would have been too much effort and afforded too little grandstanding potential.

So the Republic died and the Pax Americana was born. And the Empire had a fairly good run too, ended up lasting longer than the Republic it replaced. It succumbed to the 20th Century disease (Fascism, Socialism, Liberalism, Communism whatever label you want to put on it) and the internal contradictions in it.

Not needed. You don't need to work out the entire order of battle, simulate results or anything of that nature to realize it is a dead end. US policy on States leaving the Union is settled historical fact. War is certain, total unconditional war, including punitive war against civilian targets and populations, the works. War just as total as anything in Libya or Syria recently. Unless you propose a modern tyrant like Obama would shrink from using Lincoln's playbook or would lack the will to appeal to the Sword when push came to shove and all other appeals had failed. I already stated the only possible exception and it is improbable to an extreme only seen in fiction... and usually bad fiction.

586 troyriser@570 said: "The side that enslaved human beings, asshole."

That would pretty much be EVERY side until very recently. Including the North. Bet an ignorant tard like you doesn't even know why the Emancipation Proclamation was a useless PR stunt aimed mostly at preventing France from recognizing the CSA.

Hint: under many different names and with subtle differences in the details slavery was pretty much a universal notion from the earliest human societies up until the British Navy stamped it out within the range of their guns. The idea that slavery is always wrong is a unique idea that arose only within Western Civilization and there only recently.

Hint: Many of the US Founding Fathers understood the problems reconciling "All men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights..." and slavery. How to deal with it was the problem and was deemed insolvable at the time so was punted. But steps ARE clearly visible in the Constitution and were obviously intended to have allowed a gradual and peaceful resolution of the problem.

Hint: There were slaves in the North at the time; The Emancipation Proclamation didn't free them.

Hint: It didn't because Lincoln had no authority to do that and usurping that much power would have lead Congress to remove to his sorry ass. But freeing the slaves in territory in rebellion (i.e. where he had no actual authority) was legal purely as a punitive measure in war. But it freed exactly zero slaves.

Hint: Lincoln was actually a pretty nasty racist himself. His preference seemed to have been for a free em and send em back to Africa solution. He didn't live long enough to implement that. Now that would be an interesting alternate history novel.

History is a lot messier (and therefore more interesting) than the Disney version you get fed in the government schools.

Again: read the transcript of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Read the Cooper Union speech. Lincoln held strong views opposing the institution of slavery but desperately didn't want civil war and was prepared to compromise his personal beliefs to prevent it. The South essentially spared him from making that compromise when South Carolina seceded and Ft. Sumpter was fired upon.

Abolitionists were considered Republican radicals, if it tells you anything about the times.

599 597 Troy Riser,

Hey troy again "i have" I am gonna give you the benefit of the doubt here and not call you an asshammer.

I'm in a good mood.

He was as passionate about killing slavery as a holy zealot as his current audience wanted to hear.

Lincoln pisses me off as a Northern partisan because I SHOULD like him and I do not.

Hell I am pretty sure as I age and I see the destruction the imperial presidency Jackson birthed and Lincoln started on the road to inferno that I hate him.

Lincoln's ONLY saving grace was Jeff Davis was an even bigger asshole.

Posted by: sven10077 at December 11, 2012 11:13 PM (LRFds)

600 troyriser@592 said, "He was emphatically anti-slavery."

Yes. Certainly the South believed him to be. So much so that it was clear the limits of the Constitution were not going to limit his actions against them, thus the reason for their panic and stampede for the exits when he was elected. Thus the War of Southern Independence. Lincoln was also a racist. That is also historical fact. You do realize the two notions are compatible. He believed slavery was wrong AND that Africans were racially inferior.

Just a nasty situation all around, like I said in the first post. Everybody was so fudged up there were no 'good guys' and thus we were all Damned. Might want to keep that in mind and try to worry more about making sure you are on the moral high ground instead of just winning; especially those of ya that believe in a higher power and all that.... be worthy of getting a divine intervention and ya might not need to have the best plans, tactics, weapons, etc. But personally I wouldn't bet everything on it. Tanks trump that .308 stored in the closet alongside the bugout bag. Besides, as long as there are free and fair elections, ballots trump bullets.

Some of you guys actually sound as if you're eager for a fight. You need to get over it. If the President is who and what you seem to believe he is, the fight will come to you in its own good time.

603 do you? Chlorine gas? Seriously?

Yea, its "old school" WWI gas warfare shit, but it works. Plenty of dead soldiers will attest to that.

You don't need mega-deaths in asymmetric warfare against a more powerful force, only persistence.

Obviously you've never been exposed to even a little bit of Chlorine gas.

Posted by: @PurpAv at December 11, 2012 11:30 PM (bodka)

604 I was referring to WMD, not unconventional weapons. As in MASS destruction on a scale to bring the iron logic of MAD into play. Sorry, chlorine gas doesn't count for that unless you can unleash it on a whole city from a distance. And make a credible enough threat of it ahead of time to deter aggression.

Tanks suck in urban environments. They also don't go far without fuel. They be hard to push.

Oh, that .308? That's what deals with the fuel storage.

607 And make a credible enough threat of it ahead of time to deter aggression.

An asymmetric force can never deter aggression. They can however make it costly to maintain (ex. Afghanistan)

BTW, current US military policy defines poison gas as a WMD.

http://www.defense.gov/pdf/NMS-CWMD2006.pdf (see Annex A)

If you plan on using non-standard definitions for terms in the future, you should state that explicitly up front. Failure to do so is confusing.

Posted by: @PurpAv at December 11, 2012 11:42 PM (bodka)

608 I know they call some stuff WMD that would more properly be called unconventional weapons, etc. But few chemical weapons really meet the M in the term Weapons of Mass Destruction. They don't actually destroy a lot either for that matter, just kill off people. Language gets fuzzy sometimes. Kinda like 'terrorism'. Oh well.

Anyway, my point stands that WMD for the purposes of MAD probably doesn't include the typical chemical weapons. Ya got something you can douse a city with (or drop into a water supply) and wipe out mass numbers then ya got something. Chlorine gas canisters, even dropped from planes, probably won't inspire the required fear of war being suicidal. Biologicals may or may not meet the need, for example anthrax in envelopes won't but more mass targeted delivery systems would.

Yeah, right: a troll from the SPLC. As it happens, I like the work Morris Dees and the SPLC accomplished in the 80's when they took on Bob Matthews, David Lane and the Bruder Schweigen, but they've been coasting on that success ever since. They've listed a Baptist Church in Indianapolis as a hate group, of all things. Go figure.

Anyway, sport, I'm not a troll for anyone. I haven't been lying in wait on AoS for 8 or so years, using my real name, in hopes of somehow getting a rise out of an apologist for the fucking Confederacy whose hackles rise at the mention of the SPLC.

Based on what I've read so far, I'm guessing you're not a veteran but wished you were. You've never seen combat, either, but you have watched a lot of war movies. And since you're all het up about the SPLC, I'd also bet you put on camouflage fatigues from time to time and play Army on weekends with your buddies. How cute.

Chlorine gas was first used on Canadian troops during the second battle of the Somme during WWI. The wind shifted and blew it back on the Germans. Not exactly a testament to its effectiveness.

A little bit of chlorine gas is bleach (5% Cl2 chlorine gas dissolved in water).

Posted by: entropy at December 12, 2012 12:10 AM (YUttk)

613 Woops, I'm wrong. Bleach is sodium hypochlorite in water.

I think the 'bleach smell' is chlorine gas though.

614 "You do realize publicly entertaining mass murder fantasies might lead some to believe you're a batshit crazy psychopath."

Or wise enough to learn the lesson of the Cold War. MAD was insane but it did have the benefit of working better than war. If the 'only winning move is not to play' sane people don't play. Even evil ones. The Soviets were evil but not stupid or insane, thus no war. Not totally sure about Obama himself but the people around him are the functional equal of Soviets. Atheist and Communist, thus amendable to the logic of MAD since they desire power in this world instead of a reward in heaven.

The Muslim Brotherhood and Iran, not so much.

Posted by: John Morris at December 12, 2012 12:14 AM (sCRhB)

615 They don't actually destroy a lot either for that matter, just kill off people. Language gets fuzzy sometimes.

Its only "fuzzy" for people with poor reading comprehension...

"Weapons that are capable of
a high order of destruction and/or
of being used in a manner so as to
destroy large numbers of people.
Weapons of mass destruction can be
nuclear, biological, chemical, and
radiological weapons, but exclude
means of delivery of weapons
where
such means is a separable and
divisible part of the weapon."

Chlorine gas is clearly a "chemical" weapon. The delivery system is excludable from being part of "WMD" classification.

In the case of chemical weapons, all you need is a sufficient quantity to meet the nebulous "large numbers" criteria and per the above you have a "WMD"

Posted by: @PurpAv at December 12, 2012 12:18 AM (bodka)

616 BTW, 5gal of bleach and 5gal of ammonia is more than sufficient to kill hundreds of people in a confined space where the air handling has been disabled and exits blocked.

Posted by: @PurpAv at December 12, 2012 12:22 AM (bodka)

617 > In the case of chemical weapons, all you need is a sufficient quantity

> meet the nebulous "large numbers" criteria and per the above you have
a "WMD"

True enough. But MOAB could also take down 'large numbers' if dropped in a populated area. But one mortar shell with chlorine gas gets you a one way ticket to a war crimes tribunal in the Hague for using a 'WMD' and MOAB won't. Not very logical unless you are a politician.

Again, I was limiting the definition to WMD suitable for MAD. Weapons so terrible all sane people would recoil from their use because of the likelihood of everyone being killed on both sides were they ever unleashed. Weapons so powerful they deter war by their very existence.

Posted by: John Morris at December 12, 2012 12:28 AM (sCRhB)

618 Oh look -- the JFK School of Government at Harvard seems to think a gas attack with only a dozen or so fatalities qualifies as a "WMD" attack.

Or someone who simply doesn't give a shit. It may be a mistake to think that people give a shit.

Rebel and resistance groups tend not to give a shit about the Hague or war crimes tribunals.

Not many people have a MOAB in the kitchen, but quite a few have some bleach and ammonia.

Of course a quick breakin at any electroplating shop can get you a 55gal drum of sodium or potassium cyanide pretty easy too. That plus a little battery acid and you got a rocking cyanide gas party.

Kinda making my point for me now. In diplomat speak WMD has no clearly defined meaning anymore. It used to mean WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, ya know as in weapons that would wipe out a crapload of people or break a hell of a lot of stuff. Weapons that inspired unreasoning terror (or reasonable) at the very mention of them. Now it means anything they don't like. Kinda like racist, fascist or terrorist.

More accurately it would seem --- In John Morris diplomat speak WMD has no clearly defined meaning anymore.

I find it curious that YOU are unwilling to use the term as defined and accepted by the US government, AND the United Nations. The UN classifies chemical weapons as WMD too.

http://www.un.org/disarmament/WMD/Chemical/

Here's a thought -- stop watching fucking TV.

Maybe you should lobby the UN to adopt the John Morris definition of WMD?

You're all about the NWO, Jewish conspiracy, black helicopter bullshit, aren't you? You saw 'Let It Burn' on a mainstream conservative site and thought your time has finally arrived, when your absolutely crackpot ideas will finally attract the broad appeal you think they so richly deserve.

Apologists for the fucking Confederacy. Chlorine gas and other great ideas for home-made WMD for those special moments when you want to murder hundreds of people. Jesus Christ.

Not true, at least insofar as my personal beliefs are concerned. I just don't like apologists for the confederacy, psycho whackjobs who fantasize about killing lots of innocent people using homemade WMD, and fuckheads who advocate violence and rebellion without a clue as to what violence is and what rebellion would mean. Whatever these people are, they are not conservatives. I doubt many of them would qualify as sane.

And that Powell and Petraeus comment? You didn't serve, did you? Of course I am predisposed to respect men who have given decades of their lives in service to their country. Naturally, obviously.
