"There Will Be Blood:" Michigan Legislator Threatens "No Peace" if Right-To-Work Law Passed; "Demonstrators" Occupy Government Building

And here we go.

On Twitter, @stranahan is reporting some harrowing things. Americans For Prosperity had a tent up, which was torn down by union protestors; worse yet, he said there were people inside the tent when they took it down, and the "protesters" were armed with knives.

He says the "protesters" have also occupied the George Romney building, which is the Governor's main office.

Update: @scrowder (comedian Steve Crowder, who did the Bowie parody, and the "redistribution of Halloween candy" clip) was punched four times in the face during the fracas. See end of update.

Update: They broke his tooth in the beating.

Or, as the media calls it, "a mostly peaceful demonstration." That of course is JammieWF's joke.

Except it's not a joke. It's real.

Video: of the mob taking down the tent.

Gee, I wonder if Obama will caution the mob against violence. (Answer: No, he won't.)

38 What is hilarious is that the UAW was created to keep blacks from being hired by Henry Ford and that, generally, unions hurt blacks the most.

Unions aren't about labor vs. management, they're about labor vs. labor.

The main effect of a union is to keep people who are starving and unemployed from working for a lower wage than the union members.

Until the union members lose their jobs, and then the friendly union pretends they don't exist.

Unions are also a pyramid scheme. If you manage to hold on to the same lousy job for 20 years, the union treats you well. Just starting out? You're screwed, now pay up so that the geriatric lazyasses can get their fat paychecks and equivalent to academic tenure.

Live blog: House passes 1st right-to-work bill; state police in riot gear arrive
11:23 AM | 1
After 90 minutes of passionate debate, the state House of Representatives voted 58-51 today to pass a right to work bill for public employees. They still have to consider a bill for private sector employees. Right after the vote, the gallery started shouting “shame on you.” The crowd outside the Capitol in Lansing swelled to more than 10,000 people by police estimates today.

Actually, I've worked in both union and non-union situations in union and right to work states. Generally you make more working for a union, but not always considerably more. Of course, you have to add in your union dues at the end of the year to see how that fits into the equation.

However, for Michigan, right to work is totally the way to go.

You insipid nitwit. You can't expand self-defense that far. Self defense requires imminent danger to one's life or limb.
Unions have neither life nor limb, and thus do not get self defense morality exemptions. It only applies to persons. (And the individuals affected by RTW will not cease to exist. Furthermore, even if wages or hiring Drop (which they won't that's a lie) that's not an imminent threat to life or limb. IMMINENT being the key word.)

It isn't just teachers as several unions have invaded and this victory will be challenged in court. Who knows what "justice" will determine. But fair enough on the critique as I was using "LIB" as the battle cry for the "fiscal cliff". Conflation caused confusion so my bad.

But, while I applaud the MI GOP Legislature for the RTW laws, I still advocate the LIB policy at the Federal level. Deny it money and it will weaken or die. Shut the bastard down and walk away. Let the States take over.

Ironically, by the same token, deny the unions easy, guaranteed money and they will die; but that requires action and not inaction - a bit of an inversion of LIB at the State level.

198 every time I tasted blood playing Football, I played a lot better

In high school and college wrestling I could never produce aggression on demand the way some could.

If an opponent managed to hurt me somehow, then the match was over 15 seconds later, and they were the loser by pin. Every freaking time.

I just needed something to throw that mental switch, then it was game over.

You're moral confusion is noted.
Objects themselves are inherently neutral. Their particular use makes them violent or not. (Target shooting is hardly violent, similarly knives, slicing vegetables, not violent, stabbing yes.)
And the particularity violence is either justified or it isn't. The vast majority of people (here included) abhor unjustified violence, but understand the need to use justified violence against people who provide an imminent threat to life or limb (or property for some people.)

Now, either you are the stupidest troll to ever approach this blog, or you're intentionally obfuscating things. If the former, do some reading, if the latter begone before someone drops a house on you too. (Wizard of Oz reference FTW.)

Here's a question, I'm assuming that you cannot bring guns onto the grounds of the capitol building. What about knives? Knives are also a weapon and, I have been informed reliably, inherently violent. Why were the unions allowed to bring the knives? It's almost like laws prohibiting weapon ownership are ineffective against those who have the intent to do harm.

FWIW, Waco is at best a case study in several things. It has so many flaws it cannot be reliably used for any casuistic moral reasoning however. (No really. It's not a paradigm case, too much went wrong.)
It's also worth pointing out that enforcement of the law is not really applicable to the discussion you're trying to have. (You started with individual citizens engaging in violence, the law has a special purpose. But do not take this to mean the law's powers are endless. It's complicated and outside of the scope of what we're trying to say.)

Dobbs may or may not be a troll (here's a hint, bud, if you're delurking for the first time or one of the first times, don't go all "militia").

I will say this, though: Drudge is showcasing a lot more violent criminal acts over minor property matters. The little kids trying to carjack the woman in Portland, the woman getting killed for telling some welfare leeches to get a job, the other woman killed in a robbery by other "urban" teens, it just keeps getting better.

I'm not going to get on ace's bad side by advocating any violence, but I will say that my desire to avoid lawlessness has significantly lessened of late.

So when do we make a stand? Plus, the military is not a lost cause.....yet. Dear Leader and the dems are working on that. But for every military-trained patriot that they let go is one more military-trained patriot on our side.

What I'm going to start asking every chance I get is: When do we make a stand? Which hill is worth dying over. Now is the time to start contemplating what each one of us are willing to sacrifice for a Constitutional government.

As the red states start rebelling, as they already are, are you willing to back these governors and legislators up with an armed populace when (and it will be when and not if) this becomes truly violent?

The last polling I saw of military response to 'orders to shoot to kill' civilians revealed similar numbers, too.

You need to go back and review both the Law of Land Warfare and the UCMJ. Articles 90 and 92 are on point here.

Everyone, private to General, has the duty to disobey illegal or immoral orders.

You can argue the legality or immorality of the order at your trial. But that's the point, if it's illegal or immoral then we don't do "Obey first, refuse later." You refuse first, period, and be prepared to answer for it.

I've already pointed out that a service member is justified in disobeying an unlawful order. The lawfulness of that order is determined later, by court martial. So yes, a service member may disobey an unlawful order, even from the President. However, it is not unlawful for the President to order troops to quell a domestic disturbance or insurrection, which is the context of this discussion.

Thanks for your service. Because of the relative lack of historical precedent (or at least recent precedent), I think you underestimate the willingness of service members to question or refuse to execute an unlawful order of the nature such as "turn your guns on and shoot your countrymen."More likely, however, service members would be put in a situation of having to defend themselves against a mob without clear ROE, and then be castigated for taking the only logical course of action of self defense, when the situation inevitably presents itself. It's sad how predictable this is.

You're leaving out the "immoral" part. Which is really my concern.

It is not moral to open fire on your countrymen in order to keep some demonstrable incompetent in the White House.

You know and I know this is a case-by-case thing, and every soldier would make the decision for himself.

Example: Infantry or MP battalion protecting some critical infrastructure or sensitive facility under attack by anyone (enemy, foreign or domestic) ordered to open fire.

Absolutely legal and moral.

Example: Infantry or MP battalion deployed to block route of advance of large crowd and ordered to open fire into crowd with live ammo and crew-served weapons?

Immoral, and only the exact circumstances would dictate if it's even legal. Which it likely would not be.

It is not a cut-and-dried thing, and that's what you're selling it as.

Maybe I missed something in the discussion. What I was referring to was the mistaken impression by people back in the Katrina days that George Bush, as President and Commander in Chief, could order troops to restore order in New Orleans.

Idiots in the media thought this was the case and ignored the fact that without the permission of the governor of Louisiana, no commander, let alone General Honore, would have obeyed an unlawful order such as that.

Perhaps you didn't mean it in that light, but that's the way I read it.

He actually could if he had to. But I think his problem with it was political, not legal.

340 "He actually could if he had to. But I think his problem with it was political, not legal."

A President would need to declare a civil insurrection, nationalize that state's national guard units who were not part of the insurrection, impose martial law and be prepared to defend all of those actions in court to avoid impeachment.

If a President just sent federal troops into a situation like New Orleans during Katrina, they would have no authority. If a federal squad tried to arrest a looter, the Louisania National Guard would be within their rights to arrest the troops or even fire on them to protect the citizens of their state.

People think the President is the "boss" of all soldiers, whether they are regular Army or National Guard. That is totally mistaken.

As someone already pointed out, Bush the elder sent troops to quell riots in California (at the governor's request, if memory serves) without declaring a civil insurrection. Also note that a National Guard general is now included in the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It could be argued (successfully, I think) that the inclusion of such a position within the federal military command structure places the National Guard within the federal purview.

349 "Not completely. Here, check out Operation Garden Plot: "

Operation Garden Plot is the joint operational plan to provide assistance to state and local governments when they request it. It is similar and complimentary to the mutual assistance agreements held by the States for use of the National Guard.

One of the basic tenents of the way our country is organized, as a collection of States united for the common good, is the limitation on the federal government concerning the use of federal troops. The Posse Comitatus Act effectively prohibits federal troops from acting as law enforcement agents inside the U.S. without the express permission of the governor of the state they are acting in.

Federal troops were used in the California earthquake when the governor declared the state's resources were overwhelmed and he asked for the disaster to be federalized. Kathleen Blanco never gave such permission to Bush. After days of negotiation, a quasi-legal document was produced providing "joint" command between the Commander in Chief of the Louisiana forces (Blanco) and Gen Honore. US troops were forbidden to use force except in self defense. It was a legal clusterfuck.

Remember the video of the federal informant Larry Grathwohl relating what Bill Ayers in his Weatherman days said would be necessary once he and his pals attained power? That genocidal riff he made about the 25 million or so 'diehard capitalists' who couldn't be reeducated? Ayers and his like-minded pals know a little about the old ultraviolence, and grow weary of us, too. It would be a serious mistake to underestimate these people.

352 The lawfulness of the POTUS' orders would be for Congress and the courts to decide; that is, the other two branches of government. No one in the military chain of command, from general to private, has the authority to make that call.
