Overnight Open Thread (8 Dec 2012)

The Fiscal Cliff And The Alinsky President.

When one strictly adheres to the principles of Saul Alinsky, you don't negotiate, you intimidate. You don't take a stand, but make the other guy take a stand and then you demonize it. You create so much static with class warfare rhetoric that it drowns out reason and fact. A good case in point is the President's insistence that the wealthy do not pay their fair share. He has been saying this for so long, it is almost an accepted fact by some. The real truth is that the top one percent of wage earners have gone from paying 20% of the total tax burden in the 1980s to 40% today. The percentage of the total income they earn is around 25%. If one extrapolates out the tax burden to include the top 10% of wage earners, the total share of the tax burden paid by that group is 70%. Their total percentage of the income earned is around 38%. These facts come straight from current IRS data.
No fair-minded person could conclude from the empirical evidence laid out in the previous paragraph, that the wealthy in this country are not paying their fair share. And yet, the President spews out this categorically false narrative and a certain percentage of the population laps it up like kittens lapping milk from a bowl. This is also what followers of Saul Alinsky practice, repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth in the minds of the masses.

Working again tonight but thankfully, I'm not doing this job. Help Wanted: Professional Fart Smeller. But it does pay $50K so there's that.

Holiday Drinks

Oh I'm so going to have some of these. 6 Christmas Themed Drinks To Get You Holiday Wasted.

The Mint Hot Chocolate Cup

◦1 quart / 4 cups / 32oz Milk or half and half
◦8 oz bittersweet chocolate (Valrhona or Sharffenberger)
◦6 oz Mint Schnapps
◦3 oz Godiva Chocolate Liqueur
•Heat 8oz of the milk/half and half in small sauce pan in low heat and add chocolate, stir until all melted; Do not boil. Add the rest of the milk and stir.
•Take six mugs and pour the liqueurs (schanps and Godiva) into each and pour the hot chocolate into each.
•Top with freshly whipped cream and crushed candy canes (hint, break them up, put into zip-loc bags and go to town with the back of a wooden spoon on them).

Release The Tax Returns

Since Obama wants to play tax the rich game, how about we take a gander at the tax returns of The World's Most Powerful Celebrities Of 2012. It's only fair.

The Equalizer

Signs that Hollywood has run out of ideas example 5,271. Big Screen Adaptation Of 80's Show The Equalizer In The Works. With Denzel Washington? He ain't old enough for the role. Nor is he British. Oh well. The theme song wasn't bad though. Right up there with Airwolf.

Music

It's a long list, but supposedly here are the Top 1000 Song To Hear Before You Die. Perusing the list, I find a few that I wish I'd never heard. What would be your top 10?

Bizarre Execution Method

The Curious Practice Of Execution By Golden Shower. Yes. It's the same golden shower you're thinking of.

I was recently reading the first volume of John Masters’ autobiography, Bugles and a Tiger, and came across one of the more bizarre execution methods, death by drowning a person in urine.

This method of execution was used by the Pathans (also known as “ethnic Afghans” and “Pashtuns”). The women of this group, particularly in the Afridi tribe of the Pashtuns (who today primarily reside in present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan), would occasionally execute people this way...

Cost Of The Lunar Flag Assembly

I cringe at the thought of how much it would cost today. Where No Flag Has Gone Before: Political And Technical Aspects Of Placing A Flag On The Moon.

Cost of materials was relatively low -- the flag was purchased for $5.50 and the tubing cost approximately $75. The cost of the shroud has been estimated at several hundred dollars due to the materials involved.

20 You create so much static with class warfare rhetoric that it drowns out reason and fact.

They also did this "static" move with Benghazi. For me, I personally don't care about Susan Rice going on the Sunday shows and lying her ass off. That's what politicians do, they follow the orders of their bosses, and I have no doubt she was told to lie (especially given that the father of one of the murdered SEALs mentioned how Shrillary told him they were "going to get the maker of that video"). For me, the most vile part of Benghazi was those two brave SEALs, painting targets, killing jihadis, and begging for aid...and being turned down. That, and the tyrant's role in it, is the important issue...and you NEVER hear it mentioned anymore.

28 The New Sexuality Comes Up Snake Eyes
More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=706

According to the left, you, dear reader, have a 90% chance of wanting to have sexual relations with someone of the same sex. And now the Federal government wants to keep records of that, by recording what a persons sexual orientation is during the decennial Census.

Kids are now being taught that 10% of people are full on homosexual and 80% are fully bisexual (according to the “research” of child-rape advocate Alfred Kinsey). This leaves only 10% of people who are actually straight. The left has gone so far as to try to ban people from convincing teens that they might not be gay after all, thus muzzling dissenting speech. By convincing otherwise straight kids that they are really “bisexual,” you will have lost of heterosexual twenty-somethings proudly declare that they are 10% Bisexual on the Kinsey scale, and thus the left will be able to artificially inflate the numbers. The census would then “confirm” those findings.

There are certainly a small percentage of individuals who are sexually attracted to those of the same sex, for whatever cause or combination of causes. Personally, I generally don’t really care who a person is or is not attracted to, or what they do in private or even profess openly. But the Progressive left have gone beyond any pretense of “tolerance” to actively try to replace the mores of society and even overrule mother nature.

It is not just sexual orientation, but gender and one’s sex itself. Under liberal/”academic” ideology, gender and a persons sex are two different things. They see “gender” as nothing more than a social construct. Thus, a person can be a female gender but a male sex. Since the “andro-normative” and “hetero-nomative” values of Western civilization are considered to be evil, the left tries to divorce gender from one’s natural born sex. To destroy this evil, gender roles are condemned and even punished.

To the Progressive left, then, a persons natural born sex is nothing more then a pluming issue. Increasingly, boys are simply seen as girls with dangly bits, and any typical male behavior they show is considered to be an aberration and sign of “andro-normative” values which are “oppressive” or some such nonsense.

Any attempt to question the Progressive/”academic” left’s views will result in them citing some 1950′s stereotype of gender rolls that are overly specific and not necessarily based in anything having to do with reality. Thus they give this option to kids that they are teaching: The Progressive way or the way of those evil andro-normative oppressors…

Try as they might, though, the Progressive left can not fool mother nature. Britain’s youngest “sex change” patient has had second thoughts, and is not begging the U.K.’s National Health Service (NHS) to reverse the damage done.

The academic left have cast loaded dice in their sexuality research and those dice have come up Snake Eyes for Western Civilization.

This will not end well…

50 Just watching the unions and democrats react in Michigan over the right to work. Lawsuits, protests, screaming, black pastors demanding the governor reconsider support.

Attack the police...

"At about 12 p.m., Michigan State Police, operating in conjunction with
Capitol Facilities, shut out new visitors following the arrest of eight
people who allegedly attempted to push past two troopers and onto the
Senate floor."

They didn't push past the police, they shoved them down.

Break the law then file lawsuits...

"At least two lawsuits have been filed contending the state violated the Open Meetings Act and citizens’ right of free speech."

Sums Leftism up quite well.

"A good case in point is the President's insistence that the wealthy do not pay their fair share. He has been saying this for so long, it is almost an accepted fact by some."

"A lie told often enough becomes the truth." -- Vladimir Lenin

"The real truth is that the top one percent of wage earners have gone from paying 20% of the total tax burden in the 1980s to 40% today. The percentage of the total income they earn is around 25%. If one extrapolates out the tax burden to include the top 10% of wage earners, the total share of the tax burden paid by that group is 70%. Their total percentage of the income earned is around 38%. These facts come straight from current IRS data."

Buying votes isn't cheap. Got to spend other people's money to gain power...

"This is also what followers of Saul Alinsky practice, repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth in the minds of the masses."

Heh. Leftists sure are original. They have so many fresh, new, sexy ideas...

The Pashtun (Pathan, Pashto, Pactyes, etc etc) women were famed for their sadism. It's all in "Flashman" (which is on the required moron reading list, I understand).

I got a couple books out from the library dealing with various aspects of early European history the other day, and one of them is about the neolithic cultures prior to the invasion of the Indo-Europeans. The auther of this book argues that these neolithic cultures were goddess-worshipping, matrilineal (and therefore matriarchal) societies that lived peacefully until they were overcome by the nasty patriarchal, bronze-wielding, warlike Indo-Europeans. I haven't really read it yet, but I have this odd suspicion that she assumes that a matrilineal culture (deduced from burial patterns, since no written evidence exists) equals a matriarchal culture, and that a society in which women dominate is automatically a peaceful one - the fact that societies such as the Iroquois and the Picts were matrilineal without being notably peaceful doesn't tend to be highlighted in this school of thought, I have noticed.

Oh, yeah, that "When God Was a Woman" bullshit. I really don't understand why they feel the need to make shit up. Any woman worth her salt would avoid becoming a god like the plague. It's girly-men like Obama that want to be gods, and then they find out it's a hell of a lot of work, and now we see how that ends up.

It's much like the "woman-priest" movement. They want to wear the poncho and toss the cracker, but they have no idea what they are asking for. Luckily, we have had some highly intelligent Popes to tell these useless ladies where to get off.

101 "Right to work" is one of the few areas where we have won the branding war. It drives liberals nuts to call it right to work.

Right now the left has won the branding on the Bush tax rates. Preserving the rates as they have been for over a decade is called a tax break.

Speaking of the branding/PR war...when will rich conservatives stop wasting their money on ads and candidates and just start buying up the media. Since so much of it is publicly traded, they are practically begging us to do it. Buying 2 or 3 major outlets would cause chaos in their ranks. Look at what little ol' Fox news does to them.

110 Let's see, Obama was raised by Alinskyite Marxists, he went to school with Alinskyite Marxists, his first job (before his open political career) was as an Alinskyite Marxist Community Organizer in which he worked with other Alinskyite Marxists.

The only two possible reasons for the left to deny what the man obviously is are either they're completely pig-ignorant or complete liars.

Note that these are not mutually-exclusive.

I can *almost* remember when you could talk to liberals. *Almost.* Now, it's red-faced denial and identity-driven bigotry, blame-shifting and nothing else.

The problem is unchallenged bullshit. And they deliberately isolate themselves from people who challenge it.

We don't even *get* to do that. You couldn't watch TV or movies or even read conservative blogs because half or more of what we talk about is what *they're* talking about.

I fear that to save sanity we're going to have to become rampant assholes constantly interrupting and interfering with their lives like they do to us.

Which probably won't work.

I can see a biological reason for this one actually. If you live in a tiny village marrying close relatives for a long period of time you will start to incur more genetic negatives. Bringing in people from way outside the group then will improve the group's genetic health.

Of course this being Afghanistan they found the most cruel and horrible way to do it.

From my reading of other tribes in this sort of situation, captured prisoners were sometimes adopted into a tribe as a replacement for a dead tribe member. Obviously, the new tribe member's loyalty would be questionable, but considering the alternative it isn't a bad deal for either side...

The next step beyond that is to note that the "three" of us (in whatever combination of sexes you desire) all love each other and there is no reason we shouldn't be given our civil rights to marry and to either have or adopt children. And to destroy religion. In 2008, if you'd said to a lib, "Obama is going to force the Catholic faith to purchase birth control and abortafacients for its employees," they would have said "No, that's ridiculous. There will always be conscience protections." Now that the tyrant did it, they say it's justice that the Church is being forced to do this. Same thing for gay marriage--now they say there would be conscience protection for religions that oppose gay marriage, but when the tyrant forces churches, mosques, and synagogues to "marry" gay people, they'll say it's justice.

It's why I stopped being in favor of gay marriage--civil unions are fine, but don't trample on the rights of people to believe differently from you.

167 There's only 994 songs, and "I Want You" by Elvis Costello is on twice. Which it shouldn't be on at all. I think it's one of his most boring, pretentious efforts (which the critics, predictably, love).

1000 songs (and a Britcentric list, at that) and the best Costello love songs they can pick are "Jack of all Parades" from King of America and (???) "I'm in the Mood Again" from North? I can name 30 better off top of me ol' 'ead!

Agree, the real point of much of this is to force all to conform to the "right" way of thinking, either by propaganda or legislation. Notice that they rarely go for referenda, because the ignorant peons might not get the point of how they should vote, but when they do and lose, they have a lawfare strategy already in place and sue almost immediately.

The next step beyond that is to note that the "three" of us (in
whatever combination of sexes you desire) all love each other and there
is no reason we shouldn't be given our civil rights to marry and to
either have or adopt children. Voila, the sacred polyamory marriage "contract" is part of the social fabric.

Yup. The beastiality argument was always silly, but the attempts to normalize polygamy are coming.

What's funny is that the people who scream "keep out of our bedroom!" don't seem to realize that pushing this crap only increases the government's involvement in their private lives. Like it or not, there are certain aspects of personal relations that the government has a legitimate interest in, such as paternity, and a few well defined rules guiding what the government will recognize are far better than trying to incorporate every single bizarre combination that you can think of.

The other example is incest. Why is incest between consenting adults illegal? It's not the genetic issues (those usually require generations of close inbreeding), it's the very real issue of how normalizing sexual relations between family members would affect the familial bonds. Could you imagine a society where a father happily announces that when his 12 year old daughter turns 18 she's becoming his wife? How about one where a mother takes her 18 year old son's virginity? How does a government respond to that? How does that affect the trust we place in parents and guardians?

To me, music is like religion. It's deeply personal and you can't explain it to people. You either feel it or you don't. It clicks in your head or you couldn't give a damn.

Film, however, is different. Fewer films than songs are made so people basically see the same stuff, more or less, so in a very general way people can agree on what's good and what's bad. I mean we can argue whether this or that movie deserve critical accolades or whatnot, but by and large I don't ever see opinions differ all that much.

I'm not really going anywhere with this. How are ya doin', Mero?

243 hey I'm glad our NaNoWriMo writers are here because I just had a great idea for a story

I have been meditating on Ace's suggestion that the real problem isn't conservative ideas, but the culture that denigrates and mocks the idea and does not give them a fair hearing. and I was thinking today, that there really isn't any story or popular movie plot of the government acting as the bad guy *when it is actually acting like a government*. There's stories of government as this cartoonish fascist state, and there's stories of government being cartoonishly corrupted by envelopes of cash and Big Corporations, but there really isn't a story out there of a government, democratically elected, that ruins innocent people's lives when it's *running as intended*, and not corrupted. and I'm thinking this could be the great basis of a story. I'm thinking it would be similar to the type of story that Atlas Shrugged tried to tell, but without the Objectivist and atheist baggage. that's how I think we have to get the story out there via the culture, is to write good stories, which then get popularized in the media because they sell lots of copies (they have to cover it then), which then gets made into movies...

so, literary morons, what do you think?

There's a whole low-volume sub-genre of sci-fi largely written by Libertarians (kind of founded by Heinlein, but not really), that has a small but consistent audience. The trick is getting beyond that audience, and that means being sneaky.

You can't make that the *official* premise of the story, just a powerful subtext.

If you write it, call Baen Books. They're kind of the core of that, as publishers go.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at December 08, 2012 11:32 PM (bxiXv)

261 The Alinsky President is an excellent name for Barack Obama. This is his playbook; we need to remember that.

I don't agree with another post at the same blog, Shame On The Catholics. "Catholics voted for Obama" means no more than to say "youth voted for Obama". White youth and White Catholics voted for Romney.

Chronic mass immigration brings in hordes of non-Whites, who as a whole vote 80% Democratic. They are part of the anti-White coalition that constitutes the modern Democratic Party, and effectively they voted according to their race, not their age or their religion. So of course when you import millions of non-White voters who happen to be Catholic, then you can get a result that can be described as "Catholics voting for Obama" but that's not what is really happening.

There are six Sinatra songs, but "Summer Wind" isn't one of them. "Get Me to the Church On Time" is, though.

"Only the Lonely" is also listed as a Sinatra song. Now I'm sure that Mr. Frank did a fine job with it, but someone please tell me that isn't the same song that Roy Orbison wrote, because that isn't listed among his songs.

Stossel (Fox) had a show on today highlighting a bunch of government regulations all written with the "best of intentions" that wound up at best doing nothing, and at worst making things worse, just worse in a new way. It sure seems that there is ample material for a novel about the reality of how bad government is when government is working as it thinks it should.

I'm talking about a movie or a story in which regulators, who are not evil, not corrupt, not selfish, who are just "doing their jobs", they end up ruining lives.

*intends* to be good. ipso facto, when working as intended it is good.

I think the conservative take is that gov. is bad because of (a) all
people are flawed, so corruption will always be there. and (b) seen v.
unseen -- we neglect to account for the unseen (unintended consequences,
distortions, moral hazards, ...)

307 The nation is on fire, and the politicos are arguing over who used the best kindling.

Really though, I have a great idea. I stole most of it from a sci-fi author though I can't remember exactly which one.

Put up free meal dispensers throughout the US. Sorta like K Rations, but cheaper and in full conformance with The Mooch's wish list on dietary guidelines. Add a warmer box (not a microwave) beside each dispenser. No one will ever be hungry again. But make the food bland and not particularly tasty.

Now here are the kickers. First off, you have to swipe a photo ID card to get the meal. It only works 3 times per day. To get that card, you have to show the same sort of ID that you need for a DL; it can also serve as voter ID. This solves the whole voter ID issue.

It also eliminates food stamps and school meal programs. It also eliminates the need for soup kitchens and such.

This would yank the whole starving American argument completely out of the Dem hands, and cut off a major set of targeted handouts. It's free to everyone, really even to illegals as do gooders would always be willing to swipe their card and leave the package for anyone that wants it. Basic food would be free for the asking.

No more panhandlers with 'Will Work For Food' signs. No more worries about food poisoning or unsafe handling problems as the food is precooked.

I really like this idea. Face the facts, 47 million households are already on food stamps. Add some more for the free school lunch programs. We are already feeding anyone that asks.

The hook would be a website that shows the inner workings of the station from soup to nuts 24/7.

313 Gay marriage is militant gays attack upon Christianity (particularly the Catholic Church).

You'll notice they spend a lot of time criticizing and protesting and physically attacking the Church and it's rites.

By receiving the government's permission to be married, they now set up the same situation as with abortion and contraception; the Church will be forced to carry out these ceremonies under threat of government sanctions and lawsuits.

Plus as we're now seeing it's also about the health benefits of one partner being available to the other. Under current law many insurers are able to charge higher premiums for coverage of non-spousal adult beneficiaries or even to not have to cover them at all. (this applies particularly to company provided insurance)

It's always been about forcing those who believe that homosexuality is sinful and/or disgusting to accept the gay lifestyle and sexual practices to be the equivalent of heterosexuality.

It's not about getting equal, it's about getting even.

(this of course is only my opinion and may or may not apply to the majority of homosexuals. it's merely a judgment derived from observation of the actions, writings and speech of various homosexuals as reported by the news media. So if you have a problem with it, don't expect an argument.)

"While the votes are still being tabulated, it is a safe bet that an overwhelming majority of House Republicans will have come from districts that voted for Mitt Romney. What sway does President Obama hold over a Republican whose district went for Mitt Romney? The answer: very, very little."

353 I find myself doing that mm hmm answer when someone says thank you for some small act of civility I've committed.

In my defense, I don't really do it FOR them. it's just how I was taught to act so saying they're welcome is false cause they aren't necessarily welcome as I didn't do it for them. Also, these days, people thank others so little that I'm surprised when they do and aren't really expecting to have to respond.

I realize it's impolite but hey if they get upset due to the lack of the "you're welcome" acknowledging they're being polite back, it's kind of self defeating.

There's also some languages that perceive "Thank you" as a response to erase the obligation incurred. I don't do nice things to obligate anyone. At least no any more.

Smiling, happy people who want to HELP you do as much if not more damage than the black hats, because they always, *always* think they know more than they do.

383 Minimum wage hikes are just government mandated inflation.

A truly free market values labor pretty fairly.

Minimum wage distorts markets and prices out people who are just looking for a few extra bucks and want to get out of the house for a while who would be willing to do a marginal value job for say $5/hour.

If you can find someone willing to do a job that otherwise wouldn't be worth pay $9/hr for, but would be worth paying $5/hr for, then you created a new entry level job. With a minimum wage law, that job never gets created.

Posted by: ObjectionSustained at December 08, 2012 11:36 PM (bxmu2)

OK, that's a fair question. I'll take a stab at it.

I first discovered Bob Dylan when I was 18 years old in 1976.

I believe that he is the greatest songwriter who has ever lived, bar none. This opinion is based not on other people's opinions, but by listening to lots and lots of music, both by him and by others.

His voice doesn't bother me. Maybe that's because both of us are from the Midwest. Likewise, I don't have a problem with Sarah Palin's voice, but that seems to be a sticking point for some people. Shrug.

In addition to his songwriting, he has managed to surround himself with first-rate musicians throughout his career.

I will use one song as an example, "Things Have Changed". It's a good song; in fact it won an Academy Award as "Best Song", since it was written for a movie. But most serious Dylan fans wouldn't even put it the top 20 of his best songs.

Here is the studio recording and official music video from 2000:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9EKqQWPjyo

Here is how he performs it live today. This audience recording is from 2011 when he was 70 years old. That's Mark Knopfler on lead guitar:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWH_XlMWcko

Hope this helps. Like I said, that's just one song, and not nearly his best.

474 I believe that he is the greatest songwriter who has ever lived, bar none.

When the entire body of the Kinks work is examined, Ray Davies makes Dylan look like an amateur hack IMHO.

Posted by: @PurpAv at December 09, 2012 12:31 AM

I'd be leaning towards Davies also. Not that there's anything wrong with Dylan's stuff, I like it, but he's not as much a total songwriter. More a poet with a good ear. He writes great turns of phrases etc, but overall, his tunes are pretty basic. He's done outstanding, memorable stuff, but, I can't help but feel the resuolt is more due to the arrangment and how the band he's working with produces a melody out of the basic framework. "Like a Rolling Stone" is a good example. Dylan benefitted a lot from excellent collaborators, though they were uncredited.

490 One thing I remember from salesmanship classes is that the most frequently forgotten part of a sale is to actually ask for it to happen. You can go forever talking about how great it's going to be, explain the heck out of it, have the customer totally with you.....and forget to ask, "can I write this up as a sale?" and have the puzzled customer walk out of the shop.

The problem is that having fun and simply flirting will, more often than not, end up getting boring to her. Then you'll end up as "this fun guy" and not as a potential relationship.

There is a device for "de-winding" the spring, but the specific name escapes me. Find one and use it. Even if the spring is un-wound to the point where the clock will not run, the spring still has enough energy in it to cause severe injury ... it's thin and made of well tempered steel ... sort of like a very small power lawnmower blade ...

I've found that the best way to avoid the friend zone is to simply say, "I like you" at the beginning. Then there is no chance of confusion. Even if you do end up as friends, at least you made the effort, and you can always keep the door open for later if things change for either of you.

Remember that in order to burn a bridge, you first have to be carrying a torch.

At worst she'll pull back and say that she's not interested, at which point you smile, say, "You can't blame a guy for trying" and move on with the evening. More likely she'll at least kiss you and then say that the two of you should probably just be friends.

You make an unexpected move on me and sadly i might panic and stick a knife in you at this point, but harbor no ill will and even think you were cute-- just dont lunge at me again like that. SOme women require you ask permission or consider it semi rape (i am not making this up) and think about telling everyone you have no manners.

I do, however, like assertive men who dont startle me. So if someone asked with confidence if i wanted to make out or kiss (more like "Ok we are gonna kiss but im letting you know in case you have a knife in your boot" than "Is it ok, please?") i would not be turned off. Asking permission might seem lame to a chick who likes super assertive men, but then i know plenty chicks who WANT a squish, and a few who like a guy who cares about what they are ready for... But then, i live in California.

COOTHIE! is robert around tonight? I have a kitteh right with me now.
Jellybean is worn out from playing fetch with the new toys Grimmy got
for her, today.

Uncle Horse is completely recovered and
starting to go back to work. I am so thrilled for him. And we are doing
Major work on the farm. i got in SIX loads of fresh sand for the arena
and had the outdoor stalls all smoothed out. Im getting new rubber stall
mats and Grim is getting a workshop installed. It seems dad thought
having to live in the same house with no space of his own was cruel and
unusual punishment, so he made it happen.

the weirdest things can make people happy. But i am over the moon.

oh, and i have a cold. that part is not fun.

Robert was here earlier when the BH and I were still at her company Christmas party, but he split a while back.....so no TPAKTOP tonight. It's great that Uncle Horse is doing so well.

Sounds like great fun for the farm -- and having a dedicated workshop will make things a lot better, too. I do home projects around the house, and have to unpack the garage onto the driveway to get anything substantial accomplished, then repack it afterwards. Creates a huge "barrier to entry" for starting things, and when the days are short it limits the scope of the things you can do. I also can't leave all the stuff all over the driveway to run and get more parts.

Sorry to hear about the cold -- hope it's better, soon!

No matter how much money you've stolen, no matter how many doctors you can buy, even in the progressive wonderland that is Cuba, when the Big C comes calling, you will die. There was nothing left then save for the coastal cities with the roaming gangs who plundered everything that remained and then began to press the remaining Mexicans who had not fled south into the Russian sectorinto servitude to do the dirty work of burning the bodies left over from the "final Decree" that had been issued forth from the SCFOAMF prior to his boarding of the"Special Jet" as was his station has President of the 1st 4th term. No offense to those who have actually experienced this but Chavez is a narcissist in the mold of TFG and with more dictatorial police powers (and he's used them on his enemies like TFG) On top of that he's spit in the face of the US repeatedly.

Lastly Sean Penn likes him. That makes him scum in my book. Deserving of the worst that life can throw his way.

580 Manufacturing supervision (e.g. foreperson). Degree required.

What part of a degree gets anyone experience in manufacturing supervision? (that's partly rhetorical).

God, the way we run companies these days it's a wonder anything gets out the door.

From the female psychology major in Human Resources who does the interviewing. (can't talk to the person who will actually be the hirees boss. Oh no. That would make too much sense having the person who knows what is needed and can ask the right questions do the interview.)

To the MBA who's never picked up a screwdriver in their life but now is the one deciding on what specific qualifications someone has to have to actually supervise an assembly line, organize and prioritize competing products runs or sub systems required for final assembly.

To the Accountant who has decided that although you've got 30 years experience in leading people in producing identical assemblies day after day and making sure that each step is done properly and noted correctly for documentation but you're still only worth 20k. All while operating under ridiculously short deadlines and parts shortages or failures.

I wish I could find someone who hires by gut instead of by some approved process formulated by lawyers and employee liability insurers.

Funny stuff -- and a certain bit of truth to it.....but the real problem is that management is not celebrated in the culture. If you have three guys and a pile of lumber, some manual tools, and one guy knows what needs to be done and can lead -- you can have a house in 18 weeks. If you have the same three guys, lumber, tools, and no management, you can have a pile of firewood in 18 weeks.

If you have three guys, a pile of lumber, some power tools, and one leader, you can have a house in 10 weeks. The same inputs without a leader get you a pile of firewood in 10 weeks. What's the most effective ingredient?

For myself, I had a heckuva roller-coaster ride in the 90s. I was a freshly-minted CPA hired by a small high-tech manufacturing company where the owner would sack the production staff -- from GM down to purchasing -- every few months. I came in after one such sacking and discovered that there were $200K in receivables, $1.2M in payables, and inventory in EVERY ROOM OF THE BUILDING (including the men's restroom -- I was taking a leak and looked aside to see a stack of boxes [NB -- I don't know about the women's restroom]). I went to tell someone to stop receiving, return everything nonessential that had been received in the previous 60 days, find anything that was shippable and ship it to someone, find anything that was an hour from shippable and ship it to someone in an hour, and so on......and ended up running production.

I was at this company for 7-1/2 years.....and ran production 7 separate times. I'd get it under control, the owner would hire someone to run it, I'd hand it over, the guy would screw it up, the owner would fire everyone, and (usually about a week later) the owner would ask me to "just deal with it".

Managing production is both an art and a science, and requires a certain aptitude that is actually quite uncommon in the population -- and unrelated to anything academic.

Oh, and must share -- funniest moment from the early days: I'm scrambling, scrambling to make payroll and get out-from-under the totally upside-down crap I'm dealing with, and I'm frantically thinking, "I'm flying totally blind by-the-seat-of-my-pants. I need relevant information NOW to staple this mess together." ......and then it hits me....."er, I'm the accountant." I'd previously been so bound up in the financial end of things that "months of sales in backlog" was an afterthought -- not an "oh, crud, we'd better get a wiggle on in production" moment.....and that the best time to find out about this wasn't four weeks after the end of a quarter, but right when it happened.

Add apples and beer to five more bottles of brown ale, half a bottle of Madiera, and mulling spiced (I use orange peel, clove, cinnamon, allspice, and candied ginger.

Yeah, it's pretty funny that I've gone from Santa Clarita ("saint little claire") to Santa Clara ("saint claire") while moving 300 miles north in 30 years. Just goes to show the interconnectedness of all things.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 09, 2012 05:07 AM (kaalw)

611 Key Words: unrelated to anything academic.

It's one of the reasons why all our shit is now being produced in CHINA!

To organize an assembly line that must change periodically from one type of item to another you have to be able to mentally juggle; space, time and the various abilities of the personnel present.

You have to know the operation and process of each item from start to finish as you will;
1) have to show people how to do this (even if you just made these 6 months ago.
2) wind up doing every station by yourself.
3) have to pace the entire operation if there are any delays in the parts that are used in the next process.

You also have to know which parts will normally be the most critical and thus in short supply and which parts will normally have the highest rejection rate and so unusable.
And be able to compensate accordingly.

Yet they think that a college grad with a degree in (what?) can step right in. I understand the degree business. Our high schools are so bad no that no one graduates knowing half of what someone graduating 50 years ago would know.

They have to advertise for someone with a degree just to get someone who's semi literate.

Problem is back at my first comment. You've got some bimbette with a four year liberal arts major degree who took some psychology courses because she is screwed up in the head so she gets a job as a Human Resources clerk and moves up the chain till she's interviewing people who are twice her age and with 20 more points IQ. She sees "degree required" and automatically kicks the app from someone like me who has been working with electrical/mechanical stuff since I was 16 (50 years) and manufacturing for 40 years because "I don't have a degree".

Degree in what you dimbulb?

How's about you ask me some questions about manufacturing and coordination of an assembly line on the fly instead of "where do you see yourself in 5 years?".

Arrrrrggggghhhhhh.

I've been hoping for a readjustment for a bit over four years. I could probably retire today.......in Tennessee. But I'm in California, as state that is almost as boned as Greece. California has occasionally seen moments of sanity in the past (Reagan as Governor, Prop 13, recall Gray Davis....) and I had some hope that it could show some sanity in 2012 -- no such luck. There are now Dem supermajorities in both houses of the legislature, which means that the bete noire for California progressives for almost 40 years, Prop 13, could get axed. Right now, the poorest areas of California real estate are underwater.......if Prop 13 falls, the richest areas will fall as well.

632 As joe biden would say; one word for you, GET OUT!

that last one's got a nice test pattern.

Oh the memories of waking up to the test pattern and beep after an all nighter.

Me, place I worked at for 18 years closed just before the crash.

I'm old, fat and not a personable person (until I get to know you) so wasn't able to find anywork. Luckily (for me anyway) The Dems spent all the rich peoples money (hey I'm not going to turn it down. When your poor and unemployed, you'll take any hand out) and was able to stretch unemployment and part time work into when I could go on SS. Hated to do it but I was maxing out my credit cards even with UE and savings and the part time work.

Then after struggling with no hope, my car got hit and I didn't have a vehicle to do the part time job anymore.

all I had/have is SS. It's not easy but I've been training for this all my life. I can repair most anything (already have saved myself thousands in repairs I couldn't have afforded otherwise) and I have very simple needs so I'm squeaking by.

When the electricity goes up, I'll be heading for Texas.

633 I am torn these days as on one hand I have few prospects for a job. (see: old. fat. unpersonable. and the economic slowdown is finally hitting this area)

On the other I hate having to go to the government for help.

*sigh* I gotta eat and need a roof over my head. I'm too old to live outside. I'll do just about anything to not have than happen. I was homeless once. I literally lived under a bush (a yew tree/shrub) for a while and camped out in a woods near a suburb outside Portsmouth, NH. NOT. FUN.

I'm trying to keep a cool head and ignore the signs of what's coming (so I don't get to het up. I'm stocking as much as I can of things I know I'll need if money gets cut off or the zombies attack)

646 Unfortunately, the BH isn't ready to go.....and each year we stay bleeds me out a bit. If we moved from CA, we'd instantly avoid $3,060 debt per capita (from here ( http://tinyurl.com/bc3vudp )-- and, from what I can see, wildly understated). If we moved from Santa Clara, we'd avoid the "contingent on unicorn farts" debt from the 49ers stadium construction of about $4K per person. We'd avoid the highest income tax rate in the country, and likely one of the highest sales tax rates. We'd avoid the huge costs of incarceration of illegal aliens and the corresponding costs of educating them, their emergency medical care, and their conversion of regular wages to untaxed black market payments....

I'm a California native. I was born here. I'm adapted to the natural environment here, it's in my blood. And the one-time obligation lift from getting the F*** out of here and recurring tax lift from going someplace sane is like an ache.

Florida's too hot, too wet and then in the winter you freeze.

I was thinking about moving to Cali. Haven't been there since 1970. I figure since I'm sucking on the gov't teat, I might as well get the primo benefits and climate but NO. I may move to some other state just for the climate though or if things somehow get worse here. If I lose my transportation, I'll have to go. I am not walking miles in the winters here. NONNONNONONONO.

Better Half? Start a wooing campaign. They got a good job? Family nearby? all that? Do they understand what going to happen?

It's not a question of if, it's only a question of when.

My guess? We have less than 5 years before things start getting serious. by serious I mean gov't bankruptcies and bank closures and payments missed by more than a few state governments.

685 Good morning!

Bitter clinger, when my husband worked in a consulting business, before he went to work in God-forsaken Africa, I noticed some things he did which might help you. I applied this to my own small eBay business.

1. Have a regular work schedule. My husband's office was in our basement and every day he would shower, dress, make coffee, and then head downstairs saying "I am going to work." He made himself call people, review publications, and work on projects. He would take one break and come upstairs for lunch. I try to run a regular work schedule as well. When I do not, my sales suffer.

2. You might type up an introductory letter to some prospects and offer practical advice at a cut rate, emphasizing your practical experience as training for new engineers. Do not address it to HR, but to people involved in the assembly process.

3. Get out and talk to people. This is the hardest thing for my husband to do as he is not a small-talk person. It is, however, how he wound up getting a job in Africa that pays 3 times what a similar one in the US would, plus living expenses.

Nope. I'm a 60s lad.

I grew up in the 60s...age 13 thru 24. I went to college in the 60s. I enlisted in the 60s. I was married and divorced in the 60s. After my divorce I was lucky enough to be stationed an hour from Bangkok in the 60s. After my divorce I nearly caught pneumonia from waving my crank in the air in Bangkok in the 60s.

I loved me some 60s.

If you were going to be a sexual deviate and get away with it, the 60s were your time. Didn't happen.

689 1000 songs to hear before you die? Its the same pseudo-political lovefest the Rolling Stone crowd has been foistering upon us for years. Just an excuse to flaunt their "noble" multi-culturalism and feed us the Patti Smith and Lou Reed are "artists" mumbo jumbo. So "Back in Black" is a party song? KISS gets in once for "Black Diamond" as a sex song but "Rock and Roll All Nite" and "Shout It Out Loud" don't qualify among the best party songs ever...and did I see Led Zeppelin only twice? and "Gallows Pole" was one of them? The Who once for only "Substitute?" Where was the category for "beautiful" songs of which "The Rain Song" could quash the competition. Why did I read it in the first place?
