1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Friday, December 07, 2012. On this day in 1941, a day of infamy. Need I say more. But seriously check out the picture on Bing today.

25 Just read an article on ESPN with Goodell saying the rules committee is considering doing away with the kickoff to avoid head injuries caused by violent collisions.

That's fine, but the proposed alternative is that the "kicking" team gets the ball on their own 30 in what is deemed a 4th and 15 situation. They can then either punt it away (and this is better than a KO how?), or go for it with the consequence of failure being that the other team gets the ball with great field position. Whaaa??

Talk about the cure being worse than the problem ... if doing away with the KO is what they want to do, why not just re-designate the receiving team as the team that gets the ball and set them up 1st and 10 at their own 20 as if a touchback had occurred?

29 But then they erase any good will by printing this POS about the so-called platinum coins. They include an outright lie about the Boner deal on the debt ceiling last time.

Last year, Republicans in Congress resisted raising the debt ceiling until the last minute — and then only in exchange for spending cuts.

There were no spending cuts. The “deal” wound up cutting $30M (a pittance) in Obama’s requested spending increase. Actual spending went up. And BTW, this “platinum coin” BS is just another way to “print money”.

75 1. There is no "fiscal cliff." That is a retarded, made-up expression (like "nuclear option" with respect to the filibuster) intended to alarm everyone into accepting yet another Obama crisis intervention.

2. Since the GOP is going to be blamed for any bad results no matter what, they should take the principled stand and let the upcoming deadline pass.

3. I don't mind the small tax increase in exchange for automatic cuts, including those to the military, which I support (two active family members) but which is a bloated, corrupt procurement monster.

4. Letting tax rates go up for everyone is a good thing. The free-loading 50% needs to get some skin back in the game. Once that happens, they too will care about spending because it will be coming out of their pockets, which it should because they're spending it.

5. Let it burn and ream that worthless hack Obama from the rooftops every day it goes on. If he and the Dems want to preside over an eight-year recession then let them. Eventually his lack of leadership and the failure of their tax and spend ways will become more apparent to the masses, who for the time being still believe his BS because the media tells them to. That will always be the case but at some point economic fatigue will attach to the guy in charge and his pronouncements will sound like Baghdad Bob.

78 NHTSA Fascists get approval from Obama for auto black box requirement.

The wife's new car has one of these. I'm not overly concerned from a privacy standpoint. Where I think they have value is identifying who is at fault in an accident. According to her lease agreement she can not refuse to make the black box available.

The 'other' driver isn't going to be able to claim he was only doing 25 when the box says he was doing 60. So there's that. Good drivers will pay less while the bad drivers get higher rates.

I feel for you!

Did you ever look into getting an 03 FFL (federal firearms license)? Its 30 dollars for 3 years.

You can have guns mailed to your door . They have to be 50 years old. But that leaves SKS, Garands, big bad 1911's and alot of newer guns on the list..CZ-82 and P-64 pistols etc. Het I even got one of those 'enemy at the gates" guns with original scope. Its a 1000 meter bolt action!

I actually invested in one those 03 licenses to "save money" from dealer transfers.

Darn thing cost me 20 grand so far from gun and ammo orders, who was I kidding?

106 You know, I was thinking about the tax increase for those earning over 250,000. With TFG, it's all about revenge and class warfare.

If he felt he needed that money to fix things, he should have said something like "Although I know this is a hardship, I am asking those who earn more to help for a little bit. They already pay a lot of taxes, but we need them to help us a little more for a few years."

Instead we get posing about how he's sticking it to those fat cats and by golly he isn't going to let those rich people keep their ill-gotten gains. It's simply spiking the ball and doing a victory dance, showing off for the FSA.

And the FSA doesn't even blink when he signs up for that $4 million Hawaii trip, either. They probably think it's all paid for by his book royalties or something.

Getting a rifle shotgun permit in NYC is easy and straight forward if you you have nothing that would preclude you from getting one.

You will have to wait about 6 months before you will get it and you will have to call them every month to remind them to process it and send out your license.

Unless you have juice or know someone, you will never get a handgun in NYC.

114 Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Today I’ve got a short story and a long list. We were talking a bit about Christmas songs yesterday. For a few years, I would cut a special Christmas CD for friends as a gift, but I stopped doing that a while back. But I went through my stock last night and pulled together a number of songs (all available on ITunes) that will make a good holiday playlist for anybody interested.

So here’s the story:

When Sam Goldwyn hired writers, he expected them to devote all their energies to making Goldwyn pictures, and if they worked for him long enough, they learned to expect calls from the producer at any hour of the day or night. One writer, Robert Sherwood, was hired, given a project to work on and allowed to return to his home on Long Island. At 3.00am, the phone rang. It was Goldwyn, calling from California, where it was only midnight. “Sam, do you know what time it is?” asked a sleepy Sherwood. There was a moment’s pause before he heard Goldwyn ask his wife, “Frances, Bob wants to know what time it is.”

And here’s the list:

2 CZ 82's ,(80's manufacture) its a Czech army sidearm..shots 9x18 mm (like a .380) and has a stacked 12 round mag. Its my CHL (concealed carry gun).

and a P-64, polish officers gun , shoots the same round, small, 6 round clip. Its a tiny little thing.

And 5 (count em 5) Tokarev's..shoots 7.62 x 25 mm.

2 Yugo's, 2 Romanians and a polish one.

Check out NYC state law..if you can grab these with an 03 license go for it. They are 200 dollar guns, all steel, designed for the military, tested tried and true!

I also grabbed a chopped AK pistol (30 round clip, you should see the fireball blowing out of the muzzle when I shoot that one!) and a PPS -43C (old tanker machine gun, converted to semi auto with a 35 round mag.) those are 01 guns. Legal to carry in Texas as they are considered pistols!

Benched? He talked that senile fuck Modell into cutting him from the team, citing "diminished skills". He did that at a time when his annointed successor, Vinnie Testeverde, was injured so they had to start the great Todd Philcox against Seattle the following game, where he gave up a pick 6 on the first play from scrimmage and the rout was on.

I'm open to the argument that Kosar was a locker room lawyer about sniping against offensive schemes he didn't like and Mumbles was justified in running the team the way he wanted. But he damaged the Browns chances for the playoffs with that petulant move when he didn't have a decent replacement available.

For some reason, although my great aunt Lola was there as an army nurse (she was married to a Captain) and she had to hide in a culvert when theplanes flew over, I didn't realize that so many civilian areas were bombed with loss of life.

I have read that some of the explosions in civilian areas were caused by our own artillery shooting at the planes and missing.

I married a Chinese lady while working in China, got her a visa, then a green card, then US citizenship, all by the book.

When she first came to Texas, I took her to a gun show. She could not believe it. She said "you can't even see or touch the gun in China!"

I bought her a little Taurus 22 pistol and fancied it some with some pearl handle grips. She calls it her "baby gun". Keeps the darn thing in the night stand on her side of the bed.

Of course, I said I bought you a gun, now I need to buy one.

I went for the Yugo underfolder AK!

God Bless Texas.

BTW I am working in China right now. Has Texas seceded yet?

Heck, I would drop everything AND FLY BACK FOR THAT shindig!

Obama Administration Comes Out Against Michigan Right-To-Work Legislation

... State Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer said they’re calling on
the White House for help in an effort to prevent Michigan from becoming a
right-to-work state.

Said Whitmer to WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief
Tim Skubick, ”We’re hoping when President Obama comes to Michigan next
week this is going to be on his radar screen, that he’s going to say,
‘If Michigan doesn’t care about their middle class, why should we be
bending over backwards to make sure that this governor is able to
deliver on his promises?’”

Skubick says Gov. Snyder needs cash
from the Democratic President to complete projects including the new
Detroit/Windsor international bridge crossing and the Woodward Avenue
rail system — and it’s not yet clear if this could turn into a political
game of let’s make a deal.

“If this works out the way the Democrats would hope, here’s the
scenario: Governor, if you sign the legislation, kiss that money
goodbye. And if you nix it and veto it, well, guess what? We’ll open up
the wallets and get you the money,” Skubick said. ”Some people might
call that blackmail. In politics we call it taking advantage of a
situation.”

You get one permit and need to register each rifle, shotgun or hangun.

The number of allowable registrations is unlimited technically.

There is a bill being introduced that would limit your ability to register 1 per month though.

Let me clear this up a little.

To buy and legally own rifles and shotguns you need a rifle/shotgun permit

To buy and legally own a handgun you need a handgun permit.

Having one does not confer the ability to the other.

i.e. if you have a handgun permit you cannot buy rifles and shotguns and vice versa.

You will have to register each and every firearm purchase with the appropriate division within 72 hours of purchasing.

186 Canuckistan

I've been watching this show on HGTV which is filmed in the Toronto area, Love It Or List It. The premise is that some designer will fix up the couples home while the realtor will try to get them to buy something else. The designer gets the couples money and a list of what they want done. Then work commences and 'shit happens' because shit is always gonna happen and she starts taking stuff off the couples wish list. New kitchen? Forget it. Basement rehab? Forget it. Second bathroom in a house full of kids? Forget it. Moneys gone.

My two takeaways from the show; Canadians must not be allowed to own guns, because that designer would be setting off metal detectors and look like swiss cheese if she pulled that stuff in the USA. Second, Canadian real estate prices are insane. $750,000 dollars for a 2,000 sq ft row home? WTF?

There is a great old Mojo Nixon song called "Elvis is Everywhere," in which he signs about people who have "Elvis" and people who don't. Nicole Kidman has no Elvis.

I am really digging this show "Nashville," mostly because they cast real Southerners in the lead roles and the other actors do a tremendous job with the accents and the personalities. It's the first TV show or movie I can remember that is respectful of the South.

No Newark is not a complete landfill.

There are good things about Newark.

There is the New Jersey Performing Arts Center where I usually catch 1 or 2 performances a year.

I saw Shatner's World last weekend, it was spectacular by the way.

The Prudential Center is where the NJ Devils play of which I have season tickets whenever the jerk faces decide to resume hockey.

It has the Iron Bound section where you have great restaurants and bars.

Not all of Newark is a pit.

There is a great character on "Nashville" called Scarlett who is a young girl from the sticks who came to Nashville with her boyfriend, an aspiring rock singer. She does probably the best East Tennessee/Kentucky twang I've heard since Sissy Spacek in "Coal Miner's Daughter." And the actress is Scottish, which explains a lot. East Tennessee was largely settled by Scots.

Puts up new walls then discovers the real problem.

First thing I thought of was defective heater putting too much humidity into the air. Real problem was improperly vented attic was soaking the attic insulation rendering it useless. She pisses so much money away every episode I wanna scream at her.

1- Even more people dropping out of the labor pool
2- Obama still needs people to think the economy is rebounding, so that he doesn't get the blame for the fiscal cliff. Look for real numbers (at the soonest) in January - February. That's also when the news orgs will suddenly rediscover the "Human Interest" stories about people who can't make ends meet and so forth. Because then they'll be able to blame them on those wascawy webubwicans who were so partisan and divisive that they actually expected Obama to negotiate in good faith and refused to just give him everything he wanted.

Hiring remained steady during the storm and in the face of looming tax
increases. But the government said employers added 49,000 fewer jobs in
October and September than initially estimated. And the unemployment
rate fell from 7.9 percent in October mostly because more people stopped
looking for work and weren't counted as unemployed
.

And there's your answer.

265 For Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government, more battle tanks and jet fighters are on their way from the United States.

Cairo’s military link to Washington has remained intact, meaning the U.S. will continue to modernize the biggest military in Africa – even as President Mohammed Morsi has decreed near-absolute power for himself and his supporters and opponents battle outside his palace.

Analysts say Egypt’s military buildup presents risks for Washington – and Israel – with the growing influence of the Brotherhood, whose overriding goal is to establish Shariah, or Islamic, law worldwide.

A Pentagon statement to The Washington Times on Thursday said: “We are always reviewing our foreign assistance to make sure foreign assistance advances U.S. objectives and is being used for the right purposes.”

For now, Egypt is due 200 M1A1 Abrams battle tanks, the same mechanized firepower manned by American soldiers, bringing Egypt’s inventory to a robust 1,200.

Also in the pipeline is a squadron of the Air Force F-16 Falcon, a multipurpose warplane able to dogfight and drop ordnance.

Arming our enemies, what could possibly go wrong?

304 But here's the deal with the numbers fudging from the BLS (and in particular their dropping the rate as a function of the reduction in participation rather than an increase in jobs): at some point people will actually notice that they aren't working and have no money. Whatever the rate supposedly is, it may as well be 100% if you personally have no job.

1. Government workers and lobbyists who do not worry about joblessness will probably subscribe, which will give them money they wouldn't get from outside the Beltway people.

So I am not sure they will fail at this.

This is the WSJ's model (I get the on-line free as part of a dead tree scrip) and it seems to work for them because what they're selling is financial information that's motivated by, you know, finances and shit rather than politics (although they certainly cover politics the thrust of the publication is money).

But the Journal's got a hella base to pull from and their stuff is really fucking good -- well written, timely, informative and civil. But what pop culture source of political rag is so good that I need to pay for it? The NYT? WaPo? The Daily Fucking Beast?! Macaca please. I will dance on their graves.

By 2020 her girls will be grown and she will have no encumbrances.

I'm convinced that the Clintons made a deal with Obama that Bill would save Barack's ass in this election with the convention speech and the TV ads, and then then Obama machine will get behind Hillary in 2016. The Obama people don't believe Hillary can win so it was an easy deal for them to make. Barack will officially stay out of the 2016 primaries.

The music business side of the show is fantastic though. The portrayals of the hungry young kids trying to make it, the aging star trying to hang on, the shark manager, the asshole record label CEO, the brilliant but troubled guitarist/singer who never hit it big, are all really good. Watch this space next month for prio revisions: September and October saw 49K downward revisions combined. November will suffer the same fate. [i/]

The Heritage CEO makes a little over 1.1 million a year.

As I've said many time before, every congressman should have a base pay of $500K, with a bonus of another $500K if they pass a balanced budget each year. Senators should base out at $750K with a like bonus and the President should have a flat $4 million/yr.

Reading is important. So is knowledge.

DeMint has said, from the beginning of his political career, that he would not be a career politician.

It was just a matter of when, not if or at what "sellout" price.

So it's sophistry to argue "he sold out for a salary" and therefore that salary is relevant to the argument.

He was leaving. Period. Not for a price, but because he said he was leaving.

You have no factual basis or truths to argue otherwise. In fact, they defy what you've attempted to argue.

So no, his salary is not important. It's a distraction.

401 RAMALLAH, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) — Jordanian King Abdullah II conveyed U.S. assurances to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that Washington will not allow a new Israeli settlement plan to pass, a Palestinian official said Thursday.

The United States will put pressure on Israel to cancel a recent building plan, in exchange for not starting the Palestinian efforts to join UN agencies, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

King Abdullah II, the first head of state to visit the Palestinian territories after the UN vote, told Abbas that U.S. President Barak Obama’s administration will not impose sanctions on the Palestinian National Authority.

He also said that Washington will work on preventing the construction of new housing units in the E1 area, which connects the West Bank settlement of Ma’ale Adumim with Jerusalem. Israel’s construction there is highly controversial since the corridor blocs a possible formation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank with a territorial continuity.

Yeah great friend of Israel?????? And for all those who do not know what this is all about. Ma'ale Adunim is an Israeli town East of Jerusalem that in any plan ( such as the one Bill Clinton put forward at Camp David ) would always stay party of Israel and the area in question is the land between Ma'ale Adunim and Jerusalem. It does NOT cut the West Bank in 2. However if it is not connected to Jerusalem, it actually cuts Israel/Jerusalem in 2. obama is a lying fuck

418 So it's sophistry to argue "he sold out for a salary" and therefore that salary is relevant to the argument.

Yes. Reading is fundamental. Maybe you should practice.

I haven't seen anyone say "He sold out." Everyone has already acknowledged (yesterday, in many cases) that we knew he wasn't going to be a career politician, and that he wasn't planning on running in 2018.

However, that doesn't make us NOT curious about why he chose to leave now (not even half-way through his current term) instead of, say, just not running for re-election and retiring then.

To that end, the fact that the Heritage Job was open now- AND that they were going to pay him quite a lot of money (more or less than what he makes as a senator is irrelevant, but do you really think he'd have taken the job for, say $30K/yr?) to do it.

It's curiosity. That's it. We're interested, and we're speculating. It's what we do.

But here's the deal with the numbers fudging from the BLS (and in

participation rather than an increase in jobs): at some point people

459 Speaking of OSC, I have doubts about the Ender's Game movie coming out. Harrison Ford is playing Col Graff and Ben Kingsley is Rackham, which I totally support.

The problem lies with the children. There's a lot of violence, physical violence, in the book committed by and done to very young children, as young as 4 years old. Not sure how they're going to show that and keep it under R, or if they're going to do it Hunger Games style with super-fast edits where you can't see wtf's going on.

And then the dialogue. The book's spoken dialogue is fucking horrible. I couldn't read some of the shit OSC made the kids say because it sounded too obtuse. I realize these are young children, but they talk like they have the emotional maturity of adults which they do not. I hope this is addressed in the movie.

Most likely, Hollywood will fuck this up. They fucked Starship Troopers in the ass, and that was a much better book to adapt into a movie.

477 If he is a Democrat he is not like any Democrat I have read since the 60s. He has written some papers that were more or less conservative that I have read.

OSC has a conservative bent, but he is a typical morally blind Democrat..

One thing I noticed about his stories--and I used to enjoy them--is that he does a really shitty job of portraying evil. When evil has to exist to support the plot, then it's always somebody victimized into being evil. More often though, misunderstanding lies at the heart of the conflicts in his stories.

What clinched it for me was his Alvin Maker series (I never finished it and I'm not sure whether he finished writing them). The Napoleon character had some kind of magical amulet (or maybe gift) that gave him the power of charisma over people, and he used it to profit himself greatly. And yet, Card saw fit to portray him sympathetically.

Fuck Card. Monsters walk among us. They are not just like us. He can pretend all he wants that they aren't monsters, but he can sell it to somebody else.

I completely disagree. If they mess with the dialog, they'll screw up the movie.

I read Ender's Game for the first time when I was in 5th Grade. I've read it at least once a year ever since.

Thing is, at 5th grade, nothing said by the children seemed at all out of the normal to me.

In the special edition re-release many years ago (10?) he actually addressed exactly what you're saying. He apparently got (maybe still gets) lots of letters- mostly from educators and people who work with children, that say, "Children don't talk like this. They don't think like this." But he gets lots MORE letters from pre-teens and teens who read the book and say, "Thank you for understanding us."

Ender's Game is about super-genius level kids (genetically modified, natch) who are forced to become grownups before they're 12. Maybe most kids don't talk or think that way. Those kids- who, yes, really exist (well, not the genetic modification, yet), do.

494 Ray Emory could not accept that more than one quarter of the 2,400 Americans who died at Pearl Harbor were buried, unidentified, in a volcanic crater.
And so he set out to restore names to the dead.
Emory, a survivor of the attack, doggedly scoured decades-old documents to piece together who was who. He pushed, and sometimes badgered, the government into relabeling more than 300 gravestones with the ship names of the deceased. And he lobbied for forensic scientists to exhume the skeletons of those who might be identified.
On Friday, the 71-year anniversary of the Japanese attack, the Navy and National Park Service will honor the 91-year-old former sailor for his determination to have Pearl Harbor remembered, and remembered accurately.

My guess is that the dialogue is cleaned up and modernized and won't resemble much from the book. Maybe a few lines here and there to remind fans that everything wasn't totally cut.

Ender was smart enough to realize that Graff intentionally did that to keep him from lowering his game. As long as he was isolated, he'd continue to spend his entire focus on learning and winning and not trying to make friends.

In name, no. Practically speaking, yes. We went there to get Katie the Spastic Terrier from the ASPCA shelter. We drove through the city to the shelter and it looked like pictures of Berlin in late 1945. Some of these east coast cities need to be razed and started over again.

I'm just waiting for the Potemkin villages that the Obama admin puts up and takes pictures of thriving bustling towns.

531 when I first visited the USS Arizona Memorial

My first trip to the memorial in 1976 I was amazed that oil was still bubbling up to the surface.

Is it still?

// went to Hawaii twice. After first time said to myself I'll never do that again. Six months later I'm engaged and had my arm twisted. For my time and money the Caribbean is a lot more fun. East coast to Hawaii is a pain-in-the-ass flight.

532 Just things listed in that store?

Nope, use that page as a starting point for searches and you'll see that the url will still have Ace in it. So he still gets the commiss.

Posted by: Schrödinger's cat at December 07, 2012 10:34 AM (feFL6)

533 It's more complicated than that, Butters. Use the search box on Ace's main page and he'll get something. Exact percentage varies.

I have been there six times. Never understood the hoopla about the beaches. Shittiest beaches in the world except directly in from of the hotels where they haul in sand.

537 Plus Nashville itself is one smokin' music city.

Nashville just makes you want to sing. When the wife and I were there they were playing music at the gas station. Imagine a plump, middle-aged married couple pumping gas while singing "Hot Rod Lincoln" in unison. Great fun.

Six times, crap -- I must have missed something. The only beach I liked was at Hanauma Bay -- and that was for the snorkeling. Waikiki beach was unimpressive -- except they were filming 5-0 at the time, which was kinda cool. The waves at the North Shore were pretty impressive. Took the commuter flight over to the big island for the volcano thing. That's all the highlights. Oh yeah, met Wilt Chamberlain at a bar.

I'd never have gone a second time except for strenuous arm twisting.

I was a captive; 3 cruises. We had to stop there on the way over and the way back to on-load and off-load those things that are neither denied nor acknowledged.

540 Hawaiin beaches...

...too fucking crowded.

Beach in front of my hotel in Honolulu was standing room only. Not lying.

Cool to the denial things.

All expense paid trip. Now it makes sense. I had been to the Caribbean a couple times before Hawaii and that seemed exotic. Seeing Burger Kings and McDonalds five minutes after landing in HW told me all I needed to know.

It wasn't that bad when I was there nut it was still crowded, but that was over 40 years ago. But it was bound to be crowed in front of the hotels where they hauled in sand because the rest of the "beaches" were nothing but rocks.

Its a damn volcanic island. Its a nice to place to sit out in chairs on the "lawns" but if you want to play in the sand, swim, etc, it sux.

The NHL may want to move their negotiations to the state of Washington. Then, all parties can engage in legal activities involving baking....and pizzas.
In case you've never noticed, people who engage in...er...getting baked, are usually pretty argeeable...and non-agressive.
What it'll do for the players' performance on the ice isa question for another day.

Obama post election honeymoon has started. The house needs to pass a very aggressive 'crap-sandwich' bill for he and Hairy Reed to face. Slash and burn cuts plus across the board massive tax hikes... In yo face politics.

493Am I a bad person that when I first visited the USS Arizona Memorial I wanted to throw every single Japanese tourist into the water and beat them with their constantly snapping cameras?

I used to live across the street (Kam Hwy) from Pearl Harbor, and visited the Arizona Memorial any number of times. Japanese tourists used to grin and giggle, which pissed me off, until I realized that that's their way of showing embarrassment.

555 #297, I don't see Michelle going immediately to running for Prez; more like running for a slightly lesser office, say Senator, then making her bid in 2020.

Wait... the wife of a Prez getting elected to a high office? What am I thinking; that could never happen.
