Unemployment Shoots Back Up Over 8%

I can't believe TFG is still president.

Four more years. Think about that. America is serving a medium-term prison sentence.

This is part of the reason I'm encouraging people to look to other things for happiness. I know it's going to be very difficult for me to get through this. For the past four years I've had a mindset of "Just get to January 13, 2013, and then it's all smooth sailing."

I'm having a difficult time ratcheting myself up for "Just get yourself to January 2017, and then we're on easy street, baby."

Speaking of hobbies, I discovered a fun podcast from Radio Lingua. They do a bunch of different shows -- Coffee Break Spanish, Coffee Break French, Coffee Break Italian, Coffee Break German -- where the idea is that they'll give you a language lesson in 15-20 minutes. Hence, "Coffee Break."

I started doing the French one over the Thanksgiving holiday. I really like it. One neat thing is that if you slap it on to your phone, you can listen to it while you're walking (or jogging, or working out, or driving, or laundry, or whatever).

Once I've mastered that bitch I'll move on to the one I really want to learn, Italian.

One thing here: The lessons are free but it's all audio, and some languages -- French, especially -- really require printed material to learn, because the spelling is frequently not what you'd imagine. (Lots of silent consonants.) So, if you were interested in doing this, you probably have to plan on buying a couple of language books at some point, so you can look up the spelling of, say, "travaillent." But you can get by with the first ten lessons or so without anything.

They all have a Premium subscription with, they say, more audio and printed lessons on the computer and stuff, but I haven't done that, and the prices look really, really high to me. I just got an old French textbook. That, and Google Translate. And About.com has a lot of articles on foreign languages.

I'm digging it. I'm not sure why I'm doing this but there is an element in satisfaction to it, kind of like leveling up in a video game, except obviously it's a skill with application outside of gaming (though those applications are kind of limited, too).

Well, fuck that operating a business shit now. Instead I bought me a brand new Fender Stratocaster. What's cooler than being able to sing and competently play guitar? How about being able to sing and shred the guitar? So I've also spent the last month 'leveling-up' as it were. I might have learned French as well, but I don't want to for the same reason I don't like singing without playing the guitar.

111 Sorta' OT confession

I've spent much of the last 4 years in a alcohol and marijuana induced walking coma. Typically from 10pm til 2am I drink and smoke until I pass out. Much like my forefathers, I am a high (heh) functioning drug abuser so I've maintained employment as well as my maintained a good family life, once everyone hits the rack, I hit the pipe. I'm quitting b/c I've stagnated nad I'm a person who typically achieves things, I want to return to that.

Here's my fear - Even with the calming effects of pot, I'm furious at the direction of our country and the attitude of my countrymen. I'm not certain how I'll cope with what I expect will be previously unknown levels of rage and possibly despair. On the other hand, pot is definitely holding me back and perhaps a few achievements will restore my esteem and good nature. Worth a shot at least.

134 Speaking of hobbies, I discovered a fun podcast from Radio Lingua. They do a bunch of different shows -- Coffee Break Spanish, Coffee Break French, Coffee Break Italian, Coffee Break German -- where the idea is that they'll give you a language lesson in 15-20 minutes. Hence, "Coffee Break."

Comes in handy pre-travel.

I have traveled a lot, and it was always fun to learn a bit of the language pre-travel.

Germany was too much, so I was glad they all mostly spoke English.

France, they are condescending no matter how hard you try while visiting... esp the restaurants. (I did work there for a bit, too, but we were all under the same corporation, so it was a happy fest).

Italy - will love you and smile while you try.

Ireland (I lived in Dublin for a while for work) -- you just have to learn to drink in smoke filled bars every night after work...

Along with the translation dictionary, the Fodor's and Frommer's travel guides were really helpful to play with languages. There are usually common language sections in the back of the book. They used every day terms and sentences, and also showed how to pronounce them. Invaluable, as they catered to the culture, as well.

194 "Unemployment Shoots Back Up Over 8%"

As I said before:

Victory in 2012 was in many ways a poisoned chalice.

If Romney had won, the avalanche of bad shit that is going to happen in 2013 would have paralyzed his ability to effect any long run change. He would have been forced into a tight nasty spiral of short term damage control.

What we need to work towards now is ensuring that the avalanche of bad shit that is going to happen in 2013 will paralyze OBAMA's ability to effect any long run change.

Biggest single way to paralyze Obama is to hit him relentlessly with detail. Drag him down into the mud and the weeds of policy specifics. Make him do math. On camera. He absolutely hates that stuff and he will start to flee for Hawaii and the golf course as soon as he can. From whence his ability to get stuff done will be greatly limited.

I have zero respect for anyone who voted for that POS, nor do I have any sympathy for those who did so and will now suffer under his regime. Stupid hurts. The big thing is that there is a bigger storm brewing. With BarkyCare being enacted it's going to make the unemployment #'s today look like the good old days. I can easily see it going over 10. Higher taxes, inflation, bigger deficits etc. etc. Yep, we told the idiots it was going to happen but they don't care because they are too stupid to use rationale when voting. 248 The Michigan
capitol in Lansing is on lockdown Thursday afternoon after more than
1,000 protesters flooded the building to protest new legislation that
would weaken the power of labor unions in the state.
Michigan police arrested several
protesters who tried to rush the Senate floor. Police also sprayed mace
into the protesting crowd at one point, according to the Detroit Free Press. Police told CNN
that they were forced to lock the doors when the building reached
capacity (people are able to exit). Anyone who doesn't leave the
building by 5:30 ET will face arrest.
Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has said the legislation, which is expected
to easily pass the GOP-controlled legislature, is not anti-union. The
proposed bill, called "right to work" legislation, bans the practice of
requiring all employees who benefit from a labor contract to pay union
dues. Indiana passed a similar bill earlier this year.

Want to know how they would like to do it? There's a new movement called "Regionalism". Here's how it works. Cities like Detroit that are run by corrupt, incompetent people, and populated by people whose idea of a career is to spit out welfare babies, are in deep trouble.

Solution, a thing called regionalism, where the suburbs, with married, educated, responsible people, will have to bail out the losers in the city.
Because, well, the people in the cities just aren't getting enough out of the taxpayer trough yet. They want more. So all those educated, liberal suburbanites who voted for TFG? F**k 'em. I personally wouldn't mind watching Detroit trying to suck money out of the suburbs.

And yes, there are plenty of middle class liberals in the Detroit suburbs who voted for TFG.

The selection on Amazon is unreal, and really fun stuff for parents of young kids as well. I got these for half price at TJ Maxx, but they are worth paying full price.

For the holidays, at any rate, I am cooking a lot and staying busy. Not sure what this means for the next four years. I could be the size of a dirigible by 2017 when we rejoice and are exceedingly glad in the FEMA camps (seeing as how I learned from Drudge this week that the feds are reading our emails...I wonder if they know who The Won and Dear Leader refer to?).

People are grim out there, that is for sure. I don't really think I have allowed the grief to set in since November, as I have been busy with travel and birthdays and holidays.

276 Great post Ace.....sums up what all of us have been feeling for a month now. I still can't believe we lost. It is wrong on so many levels but it is clear now that the moochera have assumed control and that this will have to play itself out. Demint leaving the Senate to me is another signal that we are about to enter the wilderness.

I am another who has withdrawn for endless blog surfing. I have not watched more than 45 minutes of Fox News since the election. This site helps keep me sane and many of the rest are just noise and self serving. Priorities have been refocused. My 10 year old son and I have been spending more time at the range and killing bad guys playing Halo. The wife and I have been spending more time drinking wine and just talking....how is that for something new. Oh, and I have two new rifles and 3000 more rounds of ammo just because I still can and that also keeps me sane.

It is going to be a looooooong four years but I really think this is the path chosen. Internal refocusing is a good thing and may very well be time well spent when it hits the fan soon.

And I am definitely in the Let It Burn camp.

Fuck the moochers.

278 A mother who beat her seven-year-old son to death for failing to learn the Koran by heart was found guilty by a British jury on Wednesday of murdering him and burning his body to hide the evidence.
Sara Ege, 33, a mathematics graduate from India, treated her son Yaseen like a "dog", beating him with a stick when he failed to memorize religious texts, Cardiff Crown Court in Wales heard.
Yaseen died in July 2010. It was initially thought that he had been killed in a fire at the family home in Pontcanna, Cardiff, but tests later revealed that he was dead before the blaze began.
Ege denied killing her son, instead blaming her husband. Yousef Ege, 38, was cleared of failing to prevent the death of his son.
She confessed to the murder, but later retracted the confession saying she had been forced into it by a threat of violence from her husband and his family.
Ege was found guilty of murder and of perverting the course of justice, and will be sentenced in the new year.
In her confession, which was recorded by police and shown to the jury, Ege detailed how her son had collapsed on the day of his death still murmuring extracts from the Koran, the holy book of Islam.
She described undressing Yaseen when he collapsed and soiled himself, then dragging him to the kitchen to feed him milk.
The child was left lying naked on the kitchen floor still reciting extracts from the Koran as she poured him the drink.

Tucked deep back in the tightly guarded machine shop of California's
oldest prison, well away from the muscle flexing inmates in "the yard," a
select group of convicted felons has their eyes on space. They
fabricate metal housing for miniature satellites designed to explore the
heavens. That's right. San Quentin inmates serving time for horrible
crimes are given easy access to some of the sharpest metal humans can
make.
They are, most likely, the only prisoners on Earth helping to develop products for space exploration.
Ariel
Wainzinger, a man with ten months left on his sentence, said: "You come
to prison and you think it's gonna be all gloom and doom and you find
yourself with a lot of different opportunities and you take advantage of
it."

Working under the strict guidance of NASA, Ariel and a handful of
other skilled inmate machinists are making something most people have
never heard of: P-PODs, Poly Picosatellite Orbital Deployers,
essentially, aluminum boxes designed to hold tiny satellites known as
CubeSats, which ride "piggyback" into space as secondary payloads. The
devices are part of a new generation of low-cost, miniature launch
vehicles developed for research used by more than 150 universities
worldwide.

I read a guy who said he learned french in four months and he was very keen on this approach.

One of his recommendations is to find dubs of english movies into the language you want -- because dubs are pretty clear and they speak a little more slowly. Then just listen to the dubbed soundtrack in background. He did it for Firefly, which had the french dub on the DVD.

I don't know if you'd have that option with Russian for many movies or tv shows.

330 What we're seeing with economics numbers, and the media's help in hiding it, is intolerable.

Last month 290k new home starts were announced. With a seasonal adjustment of +260k. Really, only 30knrwhome starts were begun.

Unemployment claims had a -130k 'seasonal adjustment" to come in at 380k.

BLS and others are now quietly releasing downward revisions to fucking EVERYTHING going back months.

Methodology is no longer even being used on seasonal adjustments, etc. It's just the wholesale making up of numbers with constant backward revisions after themedia cycle has moved on.

I think instapundit has been quoting Hayek's road to serfdom lately in this regard. The fed is now monetizing 90% of our debt issuances, which is a fancy way of saying "printing money to pay for debt."

But, as ZH says, they wrap it all up in a way to "baffle them with BS."

That's why I get so angry at the GOP. There are enough policy wonks there to know and articulate what us going on. But they don't.

Lit it fucking burn. There is a special place in hell for people that do things like this to an entire civilization for their own benefit.

332 Deploying reservist gets degree early
The Associated Press
Posted : Thursday Dec 6, 2012 13:07:42 EST
MARYVILLE, Mo. — A Northwest Missouri State student has managed to earn his degree just in time to deploy to Afghanistan.

The Maryville school’s winter commencement will not take place until Dec. 14. That’s why the school threw together a commencement ceremony Wednesday just for Bryce Webb of Winterset, Iowa.

Webb is in the Navy Reserve and learned recently that he would be deploying Thursday. He will be gone a year.

In front of a small group of faculty and staff, Webb received a bachelor’s degree in horticulture with a minor in biology. The provost and the business college’s acting dean wore traditional commencement regalia.

Webb joined the reserves after completing five years of active duty with the Navy in 2006. He said he loved college and eventually wants to pursue a master’s degree or doctorate.

Well nice to know not ALL Colleges are dick weeds.

351 Ace,

I agree the next four years will likely be Godawful in many ways, and am preparing mentally because every day will bring a barrage of more hero worship of The Lightworker. Or constant cover fire for him as things go bad.

But, things are in an awful mess. Romney (not a Reagan to be sure) would have beenlike someone trying to save the Titanic (assuming Obama was the one who hit the iceberg) and having most of the passengers bitching at him to save the ship, but most being more angry that their cigars and brandy were being interrupted.

It would be a lot better, no question, if Romney were in charge, but thingsare pretty far down the tubes. Not sure his moderate approach would have been able to make the changes that have to be made to really turn it around. 2016 could still have been coyote ugly, maybe just not double coyote ugly.

Anyway, I'm turning inward a bit as well. If it burns, at least most of the folks here are the survivors. And even with Romney, the eventual burning might well not have been avoided.

Enjoy the break and take care of yourself!

395 This is part of the reason I'm encouraging people to look to other things for happiness.

Can you still take car trips? I can't. A ninety-minute drive to Hermosa Beach to meet one of my music idols nearly killed me. That's what Meniere's disease does to you. I had to eat a plain green salad with no dressing and plain toast, and then he had to literally hold me up, and I wasn't able to stay for his whole show. I hadn't seen him in twelve years, but I had to get home because I was on the verge of projectile vomiting even though I was full of Valium.

Did you have to give up playing your cherished musical instrument because of arthritis? I had to.

Did you ever meet someone and know instantly that you were supposed to be with her, and she felt the same way about you, and so you got together and had the three happiest years of your life, and then she dumped you because she was under unbelievable pressure form her family to marry a success and have kids, so she married a multimillionaire and had kids, and twenty years later she let you know that she made the wrong decision, but there isn't a thing either of you can do about it? I happened to me.

Do you come from a background of indescribable physical abuse that led you to spend fifteen years in a booze-and-drug fog? I did.

Are you losing your hearing? I am.

Did you save a feral cat who worked his ass off to be a good cat, finally conquered his demons, and then immediately died, leaving you with his toys and his cat door to remind you of his short life? His name was Syd.

But I'm happy. You know why?

Because I know the difference between what's really important and what's only somewhat important.

When I went to Japan, I found that the festival of Obon moved me intensely. Obon, or the Bon Festival, honors the spirits of the dead. There are three different time periods for celebrating Obon in Japan, depending on the region, but the most common is three days in August.

During the Bon Festival, families return to their ancestral homes and clean the gravestones of their dead. They also perform Bon Odori or Bon dancing. The music, vocals, and dancing are extremely hypnotic.

When you're there at night, watching it in person, you experience a kind of transport. You actually feel a connection to the dead, your brothers and sisters who've gone before you and experienced all you're experiencing yourself while you're alive. The Bon Festival communicates the universality of human existence. It represents commonality that transcends culture, ethnicity, religion, politics--everything. It's about the most elemental aspects of life: You're born to people; they help you through a process of change; they die; you help others through the same process of change; and then you die.

The Bon Festival drives home the point that though we're all here on a little rock, spinning through space, not knowing what'll happen next, we're here together, going through everything together. What makes the festival moving to me is that people are having fun. It's an occasion for celebration, not sadness. Everyone is literally laughing in the face of death.

I realize now why I was drawn to the Bon Festival: The attitude expressed is the one I've adopted only recently, that losses should be mourned, but the mourning period must be followed by acknowledgement of how lucky you were to once have had that which was lost. The connection to the departed continues to exist and can sustain you and bring joy, as Obon brings joy to the Japanese even though it's a festival of the dead.

Obon showcases taiko drummers, who have some of the funkiest, most syncopated rhythms around. The singing and dancing represent your sadness for that which is gone, while the drumming expresses the joy you feel for having had that which is now gone. Both emotions are equally important. Both are vital to the process of navigating through life. Too much sadness will destroy you, but being impervious to sadness makes you a vacuous weirdo or a monster.

The Bon Festival is an embracing of the departed rather than an attempt to erase them. They're honored, celebrated with grace and gratitude.

The answer for how to overcome loss was there all along, right under my nose, and I knew it the whole time. I only had to recognize it. Obon also gave me an insight into something that had always inexplicably moved me: a V-shaped flock of geese flying overhead into the dusk, honking to each other. Once I grasped the meaning of the Bon Festival, I understood what the geese were saying to each other as they flew into the unknown together.

"Are you there?"

"Yes, I'm here."

"And you? Are you there, too?"

"Yes, I'm here."

"What about you? Are you there?"

"Yes, I'm here. We're all here with you."

All that means is that you've actually lived. You haven't been a passive spectator to your own existence. And like you, I have hope. As Vaclev Havel once said, hope isn't the naive, childishbelief that everything will turn out all right in the end. Hope is the faith that there is a point and purpose to our lives and work.

At least that "mother" knew to attempt to hide the evidence.

Lately we in the Philly metro have been treated to stories of children being brutalized to death by their guardians, in some cases their natural parent. The guardians of thetwo little victims of the most brutal treatment called 9-1-1 when they realized the child was unresponsive after another episode of unspeakable abuse.

After collecting myself, thinking of the pain those children endured in their short lives, I had the same thought: Why did the parent call the paramedics, did they not know that this is the time to hide the evidence?

One of the stories was featured on the front page of the local paper on election day. In the middle of the excitement and anticipation (because I believed Mitt would win) that story stopped me cold in my tracks and I lost my appetite. Suddenly the election seemed far away and insignificant. Because if we live on a planet where guardians of children make a career of abusing them unto death, what is the use of caring about anything at all?

Americans who live traditional lives - marriage, kids, church, mortgage, college - are to be punished to the fullest extent of the law; and then the law will be changed to allow more punishment.

I start running around the house, the panicked running drowning. It doesn’t take long when you can’t breath to think there might be seconds left in your life. By happenstance, maybe desperation to swim to the top or in search of divine intervention, I look straight up. Gone, all of it in an instant, the panic, everything. Try it, look straight ahead, constrict your throat and breath, you won’t get as much air as you need ... while doing this look straight up, as I said- gone. So anyway, next time I see the doc, I tell him the story. He’s looking down writing something, or pricing yachts - mmm hmm. NO! Are you listening to me?! ... Try it! ... No, I understand ... 433 If you are interested in learning another language, I recommend this web site:

fsi-language-courses.org/

It has pdf's of text documents and mp3's of audio tapes. It is the course that was used to teach foreign languages to foreign service diplomats in the 1960s. They learned other languages with this material and so can you. It is free which is $500 cheaper than Rosetta Stone.

I personally recommend learning Spanish. It is a lot more useful to know than French or Italian and, if you are so inclined, it might help you persuade some folks that the Democrats are not their friends. This is an easier argument to make in neighborhoods where all the Democrat Party positions are held by Blacks who use their positions for the exclusive benefit of Blacks.

Once you get into it a bit more, try some French movies, and start with subtitled ones so you can connect the French words to the English. "La Belle et la bete" by Cocteau is a good one: it's the fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast", so you already know the plot. And since they're not trying for gritty naturalism, but for poetic fantasy, they speak nice and slow. You'll learn a lot of French that way.
