Should Rush Limbaugh Advocate a 77 Percent Tax Rate?

Karl argues he should at Hot Air, suggesting that the GOP might have to illustrate to the public how massive our spending is by actually ratcheting up taxes to finance all this spending.

At the moment, the public is not actually confronted with the cost of the expanding government because we're currently borrowing from China to pay for it (and will do so, until China realizes we can't cover our debts, in which case we're going to try some hyperinflation (which, of course, has always worked in the past)).

3 The Dem position is not that everyone must be taxed fairly to pay for government.

It's that the evil rich and white folks must be punished for stealing the wealth of the poor and minorities, i.e. confiscation of their ill-gotten money in the name of fairness and social justice.

Well, you don't have to worry about Boehner, he's already on board, as of today:

The wealthy will account for more tax revenue, House Speaker John Boehner said Wednesday, while challenging President Barack Obama to sit down with him to hammer out a deal for avoiding the fiscal cliff.

"We have got to cut spending and I believe it is appropriate to put revenues on the table," Boehner told reporters on Wednesday. "Now, the revenues that we are putting on the table are going to come from guess who? The rich."

He continued, "There are ways to limit deductions, close loopholes and have the same people pay more of their money to the federal government without raising tax rates, which we believe will harm our economy."

61 The problem is we have a dysfunctional political culture. The left wins elections by pandering to the 42 percent and promising more and more free stuff, and the right panders to those who want low taxes. Put the two together, and what do you have? $16 trillion in debt!

The only time in recent memory when it wasn't dysfunctional (at least in terms of increasing debt) was when we had two dysfunctional leaders, the pragmatist polyamorizer Bill Clinton and the, well, pragmatist polyamorizer Newt Gingrich. Both were too bright for their own damn good, and neither one had any real scruples, and it was a beautiful thing! A balanced budget! An actual surplus.

Clearly, then, the remedy is to elect brilliant but dysfunctional leaders and hope for a divided government. They won't hold to their principles because they don't have any, but maybe they will rush to the middle and save the damn republic.

63 Last year, the Obama administration and State Department promoted the Global Counterterrorism Forum, but acquiesced to Turkey’s demand that Israel be excluded from the forum. Apparently, as seen by his repeated endorsements of Hamas, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan believes that terrorism is always bad, unless directed at Israelis.

Last July, Rick Richman and Jonathan Tobin noted that long after Secretary Clinton had promised to do what was necessary to win Israel’s inclusion, forum meetings were going ahead without the Jewish state’s presence. Well, it’s happened again.

According to CNS’s Patrick Goodenough, the State Department has acquiesced to the forum again excluding Israel. Goodenough reports, “Six months after the Obama administration said it was ‘committed’ to involving Israel in its flagship international counter-terrorism initiative, there has evidently been little progress….”

The issue is not simply Israel’s exclusion, or the State Department’s belief that more intolerant states like Lebanon and Turkey might stay away if Israelis were at the same forum. Rather, the problem is that these radicals believe that U.S. acquiescence to their refusal to allow Israel’s inclusion is an implicit U.S. endorsement of their drive to delegitimize Israel completely. Clinton’s refusal to pull the carpet out from under the meeting by putting U.S. participation on the line not only undercuts global counter-terrorism by signaling that terrorism against Israel needn’t be on the table, but also convinces the Erdoğans of the world that momentum is on their side.

“Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances
which permit this norm to be exceeded -- here and there, now and then --
are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often
condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people.
Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes
happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into
abject poverty.

This is known as 'bad luck.'”

rich liberals are driving a lot of this with their "tax me more"

Any number of establishment types will bitch about the conservatives and the Tea Party and wish they go away.

This microphone is on? Yes?

Oh my! Yes! Hadji is on the microphone.

and so ...

It is I - Hadji, the funny guy related to Hammura-bye. On my mother's side.

You see what I did there?

No - of course not, you Americans only know of the McDonalds and the blue jeans.

The other day I was doing a talk for Rush Limbaugh - yes, that Rush Limbaugh - it was a gig as you say.

The best joke was as this:

Barack Obama, John Boehner, and Harry Reid are captured by the cannibals. The Barack Obama is boiled and served. Uggh. It is not tasty.

The Harry Reid is sauteed and served. Ugh ... it is not tasty either.

So the cook - at fear for his own skin - says "What am I doing wrong? Why is it not tasty?"

So John Boehner says - as he is helpful in this way - "Cook! Do not worry - I am a Friar."

Because John Boehner is helpful - even to those that would kill, cook, serve and eat him.

That joke made Rush Limbaugh water his eyes like the well of Jericho.

Thank you thank you thank you!

If you are partaking of alcohol - you are to fear the wrath of Allah. If you are a woman and ritually defiled, you are to give Hadji the sexy look on the way out and show him your ankle.

Hadji will be in Room 414 for the after Hadji party.

Remember, the minimum for the drinks is two and that two is the number that is most lonely since the number one.

Instead they compromise with the enemy time and time again in exchange for things that never come to fruition and we're told to shut up and be happy about it.

I'm just sick of it all. Burn it down. My hope is that when we're putting things together from the smoldering slag heap that's left that a Democrat won't get within 100 miles of elected office for a very long time to come.

On the plus side, we can all be makers *and* takers now, and get back the money stolen from us by the gubmint.

156 The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they called "Gitche Gumee."

The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
when the skies of November turn gloomy.
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more

Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty,
that good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
when the "Gales of November" came early.

The ship was the pride of the American side
coming back from some mill in Wisconsin.

As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
with a crew and good captain well seasoned,
concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms

when they left fully loaded for Cleveland.
And later that night when the ship's bell rang,
could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?

The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
and a wave broke over the railing.
And ev'ry man knew, as the captain did too
'twas the witch of November come stealin'.
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
when the Gales of November came slashing'.
When afternoon came it was freezin' rain
in the face of a hurricane west wind.

Christina Hendricks talks about whiskey and her preferences

D: I have to ask, what would Joan's Johnnie Walker drink of choice be?

C: I think she would have a Manhattan. First of all, she lives in
Manhattan. She's very spirited, very patriotic. So I think she would
probably have a Manhattan. She'd probably like the presentation, as
well.

D: What impression would you get from a man who orders Johnnie Walker at the bar?

C: It's sexy, and it's confident, and it's also very classic. Like I
said, I like the way it looks. I like the caramel color. I like the
smell. I just like that it is what it is — you're not necessarily mixing
it with a bunch of other things to change the flavor. You are really
just enjoying the flavor of the drink, and I think that is a confident
choice.

D: And tell me, who would your favourite Moron be?

C: Well that's easy! It has to be EC. Even just his alias on the blog tells me that he's a simple, straightforward kind of man. It's just two letters, and not an alias that's vague or obtuse or trying to look like he's an intellectual. I just like that about him. I think I want to have his children too.

I predict this will end badly.

Rousey is the perfect combination. Attractive and feminine, but also a bad-ass. Quirk of being the daughter of judo experts.

And her fighting style -- armbar, armbar, armbar -- is feminine. No bleeding, mashed-up faces.

Problem is most other female fighters are on steroids or just naturally ultra-mannish. Watching two she-males brutalize each others -- already ugly -- faces is a giant turn-off for 99% of people.

The incentive to juice is even greater for women's sports than men's. Especially fighting sports. It's a battle of the manliest -- even in women's sports.

190 this is maybe kind of stupid, but if we're going to have this conversaton anyway.....

percentage of gdp is a dumb way to measure the amount of taxes we pay. pretty much (90% or better) all federal taxes are taxes on income one way or another. the estate tax isnt, but income, payroll, and even excise taxes hit income by directly taking from income or by inflating prices on things income is used to buy.

IIRC, the aggregate adjusted gross income of the us -- the actual money people earned to spwnd on things they wanted -- was about $6 trillion in 2010. the federal govt taxed away over a third of that.

they spent about 60% of it. that's your problem right there.

Factually inaccurate. Rhetorically, it may or may not be worth the distinction. But China is all done with our debt.

These days we lend money to ourselves. Shit you not - we lend ourselves money on paper.

Posted by: entropy at December 06, 2012 04:12 PM (TULs6)

192 China currently holds 8% of our debt. The amount they hold is down by over $150 billion over the last year.

Somewhere between 70-90% of all new debt is being bought by the Fed. Privately held US debt, which includes countries like China, is around $11 trillion. The other $5 trillion is held by 'intragovernment agencies'. It is this last category which is growing by leaps and bounds.

The bottom 10% of 'taxpayers' pay a negative 13.4% tax rate. The next from bottom 10% of 'taxpayers' pay a negative 5.4% rate. This is due, of course, to the EIC.

I can provide links to any of these facts, if anyone actually gives a shit.

194 77%? I have a better idea. Immediately forfeit all pay and benefits for all present and former members of congress - along with 100% of their personal holdings and retirement.

Want to talk about responsibility and accountability?

It wasn't the American taxpayer who did this - it was congress.

Posted by: George at December 06, 2012 04:22 PM (qBLA2)

195 In the past, the USA has had tax brackets even higher than 77%. The top bracket was 94% during World War II.

Yet somehow the revenues collected never rose much above 20% of GDP, and the average is about 18% of GDP. This is because when tax rates are high, people don't bother to do things that make them pay taxes, like founding new companies that hire people. The very rich can sit around letting their capital gains accumulate.

So the plans to spend 23% of GDP are absolutely certain to increase the debt. (I cannot believe that Obama claimed he had the better plan to balance the budget... he has never even tried.)

I think Ace asked a while back: why even collect any taxes? If we are just going to run up the debt anyway, why not just print all the money? Instead of using taxes to pay for $2.4 trillion and going into debt by another $1.2 trillion or so, why not just go into debt for $3.6 trillion this year?

Maybe the Republicans should propose this. It's a publicity stunt, but the idea is to publicize the idea that we are piling up a staggering load of debt. I'm not sure the typical Obama voter understands or believes this.

Sure, it makes him look heroic, but:

1) Puts him a bit on the hook again for any deficits.

2) He has a golden opportunity to let the GOP get the blame for raising taxes on everyone, which Dems really don't mind.

3) So, if we get a recession, he can blame it on the GOP.

So, the GOP should really guarantee those middle class tax cuts somehow now, so they don't get blamed. Pre-pass them or something.

The facts are, your life savings will be inflated away a terrifying amount. To compensate for this, get an EBT and let Obama buy your kids food (go to Whole Foods and get the good stuff).
